I woke up this beautiful Saturday morning, went out to the kitchen to fix breakfast for my family only to find myself standing in a pile of fire ants.Having fire ants bite you is just plain non conducive to fixing eggs and pancakes for breakfast so I've got to fix this problem by facing it head on. How could this happen? I mop and clean and then I mop and clean again it seems and I know that I didn't use sugar water to mop and clean (unless I've lost my mind which is always a possibility in this household.) What Do I do here? I don't want to poison my family. Using any kind of poison where I fix my family's food is right out. So I googled solutions to my problems and came up with some really interesting finds.
With over 12,000 species of ants in the world, only a small handful of them insist on invading our homes in search of something tasty from either the sweet foods or flesh and greasy foods. Ants commonly found indoors include the Argentine ant, the pharaoh ant, the thief or grease ant, the pavement ant and the odorous house ant And if you're really unlucky, you might have the carpenter ant, an ant insistent on destroying the wood that holds up your house, so get professional help fast in that case! However, it would be unbalanced to see ants as bad on the whole. Most of the things ants do are good for us and the environment, including eating the larvae of fleas, spiders, bed bugs, flies, silverfish and clothes moths. From that point of view, aiming to control them and prevent them from accessing your food is a better approach than seeking to completely eliminate them and natural approaches are best for this purpose. For the ants you need to control, there are some very easy, natural and effective natural methods to either ward off or remove ants from your home areas.

Here are 11 natural methods to ridding your kitchen or other living areas from ants:

1. Heed the scouts. The first signs of ants in your kitchen is a warning to you. These are the scout ants checking out your kitchen for signs of suitability to invade and their job will be to return back to the nest to inform the other ants that your kitchen is blooming with potential. Waste no time in getting to work cleaning your kitchen, sealing all food and removing all sources of sticky, sweet, greasy and flesh foods from their access.
Don't have any dirty dishes left out. Wash all dishes as they're used or place them into the dishwasher and shut the door tight. Wipe down all of your cupboard and benchtop surfaces with vinegar; this cleans, disinfects and leaves a nasty smell as far as ants are concerned. Remove all sources of garbage and keep the kitchen bin shut tightly. Rinse all recyclable containers before putting them into storage.

Sweep and vacuum the kitchen area daily.

Rinse off any jar, container or bottle that has a sticky or leftover residue. In particular, check jam/jelly jars, sauce bottles, pickle bottles, cordial bottles and honey and syrup containers. Place your honey jar and any other very ant-attractive foods inside a bowl of water (see How to keep ants out of honey and How to keep ants away from cat food for more details.

Seal every food item in containers. The containers need to be of the sort that ants cannot get into. Be relentless about this for 3-7 days. The ants, having nothing to eat, will go elsewhere. This works because the ants are following the chemical trails left by other ants, who did find food.

You may also need to seal fragrant items such as cleaning powders, deodorants, and the like in case these attract the ants' initial attention. Just be alert to any congregations around non-food sources.

2. Seal off all entrance areas. As part of your big kitchen clean, do some of your own scouting work. Can you tell where the ants are entering the house? Follow the first ants to see where they're entering and leaving from. Seal all the entrance holes that you can find using silicone caulk, putty, glue or plaster. Temporary methods can include petroleum jelly or poster tack. If you use a temporary sealant (such as poster tack), only do so until you can purchase a more permanent solution, as it will deteriorate over time and open up the gap again.

3. Load the soapy water. Soapy water will both kill the ants it hits and it will destroy their chemical trail, preventing more ants from following in their tracks. This cheap and easy method consists simply of putting one teaspoon of liquid dish soap into a spray bottle and filling it with water. When you see ants, spritz them and that will be it!

Additions to the water for added potency include mint oil or citrus peels or citrus rind oil.
Adding soap to water barriers can make them even more effective than simply using the water.

4. Put up defensive barriers. There are a number of barrier methods that you can put into place to really terrify the ants and keep them at bay. Many of the products that form these natural barriers are probably already in your kitchen; they just need to be deployed properly. A barrier doesn't need to be wider than a quarter of an inch (6.35 mm) but it must be an unbroken line. Be clear that barriers won't work on ants already in the kitchen (indeed, you'll be trapping them inside) but they will prevent any more ants from coming in. Some of the items with which to make barriers include.
Powdered charcoal

Turmeric

Cinnamon

Citrus oil

Black or cayenne pepper (hotter is best); or try red chili pepper

Chalk lines

Vaseline (great for doors and windows)

Baby powder

Powdered cleanser

White Vinegar and Water

Desiccating dusts such as diatomaceous earth or silica aerogel.

5. Sprinkle around deterring odors. Ants dislike various scents such as peppermint and camphor. These can be used fresh or in oil form to disturb the ambiance of any area that ants have been making their way to. The great thing about these fragrant deterrents is that your own preferences for scent can be used to improve the household odors in general, all the while making your kitchen, pantry and other areas very ant-unfriendly. Here are some ideas: crushed mint leaves; and grow mint near the entrance areas. Dried peppermint is also effective.

Lavender oil; and grow lavender near the entrance areas.

Oil of clove or crush cloves and sprinkle as a barrier.

Camphor.

Use laurel/bay leaves to keep the ants away from a specific food. Ants are especially attracted to sugar, paprika and flour. Put laurel/bay leaves in your sugar can, flour canister and paprika jar. You will be amazed!

6. Create your own ant baits. You can buy ant baits but they're chemical preparations that don't fit well with natural attempts to control ants in the home. It's straightforward to make your own ant baits and a particularly successful one is made using boric acid. A natural derivative of the mineral boron, boric acid is used in borax and some saline solutions. Boric acid is a stomach poison – when ants walk in it and then clean their feet or antennae, they ingest it. Bearing in mind that removing too many ants from your local environment can harm the good they're doing in keeping down pests for you, here is how to make a boric acid bait:
Buy boric acid at the local drug store (it's about USD $2 a bottle).

Pour about a tablespoon of real maple syrup (or anything you know ants love) on a flat plate or saucer.

Sprinkle the boric acid around the syrup so that the ants must walk through it to get to the syrup, you may even use a q-tip to ensure a good distribution of the powder around the the syrup.

Place wherever the ants are frequenting. Keep out of the reach of children or pets. Be patient as this method can take a week to take effect

7. Use food against ants. There are several techniques that can get rid of ants through their inability to digest the food or through expansion and death. It's not very pretty to think about but these methods do work. As with all methods, put the bait food where the ants are appearing:

Use corn meal. This method is especially great around pets or children, as corn meal by itself is not poisonous. The ants will carry it home and try to eat it, but they can't digest it properly. Be sure to put corn meal wherever you see that the ants like to frequent.

Put out cream of wheat (farina). Don't cook it – use it raw. The ants eat it and it expands in their stomachs, killing them. Put the food somewhere you know there will be ants and just leave it.

Ants are extremely susceptible to caffeine. Leave coffee grounds (used works) where the ants are and they will carry it home and eat it. This method takes a few weeks to see.

8. Deal with carpenter ants in as natural way as possible. An invasion of carpenter ants is serious as they can damage your house structure. Be alert for their invasion – piles of broken wings can be one sign and it is longer than most ants. You may also see their fecal pellets (these appear like sawdust) and they can sometimes be heard rustling in the walls. Some ways to deal with them include:

Bait them. They like sugar, so you can turn this against them; use the boric acid method described earlier.

Vacuum their nests out of the wall if possible.

Have an exterminator drill holes in the wall and blow in diatomaceous earth, silica aerogel or boric acid. A professional exterminator specializing in natural pesticides can also use pyrethrin spray or boric acid baits of their own concoction.

9.Use a professional exterminator specializing in natural pesticides to deal with fire ants. Fire ants rarely enter the home but if they do, get immediate help as they're aggressive and their stings are painful and can trigger off an allergic reaction in susceptible people. If the ants need to be sprayed, insist on the use of a bait that has an insect growth regulator like abamectin in it. In terms of outside areas, you can do this yourself provided you wear clothing top to toe and boots to protect yourself. Sneak up to the nest on a cooler day (the ants and queen rise to get more warmth) and pour several gallons/liters of boiling water into the nest. If you want to use additives to the water, try vinegar, insecticidal soaps, citrus oil, pyrethrum insecticide, or ammonia. And then repeat every day or so until it seems that the ants have given up and moved.

Coat your boots in something sticky to deter the ants from crawling on you as you perform this task.

10. Sprinkle Splenda where you see ants. We use this at school where it is not a danger to the kids.

11. Use coffee grounds. This really does work! You have to be persistent: empty coffee grounds on ant hills and along your house foundations. We generate a surprising amount of grounds in a week. This safe material confuses the worker ants because they lose their scent trails. Thus the hatched young in the ant colonies have no food and starve. It may take all summer at first but now we don't get ants in the house and the lawn is mostly clear of ant hills. It is important to apply grounds every year but that is what makes this safe! No residue effects. Clean kitchens are also a must.

Camphor is a poison, not only for ants, but for humans. Do not use in places with children.
Boric acid is potentially harmful to humans. Although the toxic dose is several grams consumed, precautions should be taken when handling it. Always keep it out of the reach of children and pets and don't absent-mindedly lick it off your fingers!

Favorite Chapter Books for Grades 3-5 : PragmaticMom
I came across this blog listing some really great books for this age group. My 4th grader has read quite a few of these books and she loved them. Of course, she loves reading and can't get enough material to read so we are so very blessed with an exceptional reader. However, her younger brother and sister struggle with reading and unfortunately don't share her love for books and reading. luckily these books have had a positive and encouraging effect on them too. I read the books to them and they participate as they can which makes them feel very proud of themselves therefore increasing and reinforcing their reading skills. These books are highly enjoyable and keep their attention focused on the stories at hand. I can't stress enough how vitally important it is to read to and with your children and there is no such thing as too old to read with family members no matter what grade they're in. I've included the list below and also some links to buy the books for your convenience. I would love to hear about what your experiences with reading to this age group have been and what some of your favorite books are.

The Secret School by Avi. Ida Bidson becomes a teacher at 14-years-old when her teacher at her one-room schoolhouse has to leave due to a family illness. This is a Newbery Award Winner! My oldest highly recommends it! [ages 8-12]

The Penderwicks on Gardam Street by Jeanne Birdsall. Her first book, The Penderwicks, won a Newbury Award. It’s a fantastic book but the sequel is even better. In this book, the girls try to find a wife for their dad. I think I was more excited than my daughter when the sequel came out! [ages 8-12]

The Seven Wonders of Sassafras Springs by Betty G. Birney. When Eben McAllister is challenged by his pa to discover wonders in his small farming community, he finds the extraordinary in a doll, a bookcase, a saw, a table, a ship in a bottle, a woven cloth, and more. [ages 7-12]

Starring Sally J. Freedman as Herself by Judy Blume. [ages 8-11]

Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume. [ages 8-11]

Caddie Woodlawn by Carol Ryrie Brink. Historical fiction about the author’s own grandmother who settled in Wisconsin during the 1860′s and their adventures getting along with the local Native Americans. [ages 8-12]

The BFG by Roald Dahl. [ages 8-11]

Matilda by Roald Dahl. (ages 8-11)

The Courage of Sarah Noble by Alice Dalgliesh. A true story about Sarah Noble, a brave 8-year-old pioneer child, who must leave her mother and siblings to accompany her father to the wilds of Connecticut while he builds a house for their family. Can Sarah keep her courage up when faced with Indians? With large type and short chapters, this Newbery Honor book is perfect for younger readers. Older readers might compare this to Caddie Woodlawn by Carol Ryrie Brink, another true story about a pioneer girl who befriends Indians. [ages 6-10]

Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. Probably one of the best books I have ever read. An amazing and uplifting story. [ages 8-12]. A note of caution, A Tiger Rising also by Kate DiCamillo also won a Newbury Honor award but I didn’t think the content was suitable for ages 8-10. The realism is just too …real, and sad. A Tale of Desperaux was also difficult for my 4th grader to get into. She thought it was boring.

The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes. My daughter’s 3rd grade teacher recommended this book and my daughter also said she loved it. It’s great for 3rd grade girls because this is when social issues such as cliques can form. [ages 8-11]

My Side of the Mountain series by Jean Craighead George. This series is about Sam Gribley living unhappily in New York City who runs away to some forgotten family land in the Catskill Mountains. He learns to live off the land with the help of a kindly librarian, a falcon baby, a flint and steele, penknife, and a ball of cord. He is joined by his sister in book two, and book three chronicles Frightful’s migration journal south. [ages 8-12]

Julie of the Wolves series by Jean Craighead George. My mom friend highly recommended this series. She’s reading it with her two girls and they all love it. [ages 7-12]

The Doll People by Laura Godwin (a three book series). [ages 8-11]

Umbrella Summer by Jan Graff. When her older brother dies unexpectedly less than a year ago, Annie reacts by excessive worrying. It’s not until a new neighbor moves in, with a secret of her own, that Annie is able to close the “umberella” of her sadness and let the sunshine in. [ages 8-12]

Year of Miss Agnes by Kirkpatrick Hill. Technically, this is historical fiction about a teacher who goes to rural Alaska and transforms the lives of the children at a one room schoolhouse. [ages 8-11]

Everything on a Waffle by Polly Horvath. Everyone in Coal Harbor, British Columbia is convinced that 11-year-old Primrose Squarp is an orphan after her mother sets sail after her fisherman father during a big storm and both don’t return except Primrose who knows they will return deep inside her heart. Her uncle Jack is recruited to take care of her and he is convinced that Coal Harbor can be converted from a dying fishing village to a tourist destination. Primrose’s faith in her parents’ return tests the patience of those around her as she fails to accept their “death” by asking the doubters, “Didn’t you ever believe anything just because you knew it was true?” [ages 8-12]

The Ordinary Princess by M. M. Kaye. A princess gets the gift of being ordinary and that turns out to be the best gift of all. [ages 8-11].

Savvy series by Ingrid Law. For generations, the Beaumont family has harbored a magical secret. They each possess a “savvy” -a special supernatural power that strikes when they turn thirteen. Grandpa Bomba moves mountains, her older brothers create hurricanes and spark electricity . . . and now it’s the eve of Mibs’s big day. [ages 8-12]

Fairy Godsister by Liz Kessler. My oldest said to include this book; it’s one of her favorites. [ages 8-12]

Jennifer, Hecate, Macbeth, William McKinley and Me, Elizabeth by e. l. konigsburg. For anyone who has had to move to a new town and stuggle to make new friends and fit in, this is the perfect read. A Newbury Honor Book, not quite in the same league as From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, this is a great book about girl friendships…and witchcraft. [ages 9-13]

The Year of the Rat by Grace Lin. This is the sequel to The Year of the Dog in which Pacy learns that her best friend is moving to California, faces prejudice including her own as a new “fresh-off-the-boat” Chinese boy joins her class, and struggles to fit in. [ages 7-11]

Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin. Grace Lin is the Amy Tan for the elementary school set. Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is an Asian-American version of the Percy Jackson series starting with The Lightening Thief. Where Riordan weaves in Greek Mythology into his plot, Grace Lin uses Chinese Folk Tales into a wonderful, inspiring and heart-warming story that teaches all of us to just… BELIEVE. This book was listed twice as a favorite book on my kids’ elementary school newspaper. [ages 8-12]

In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson by Bette Bao Lord. 8-year-old Shirley Temple Wong immigrates to America and, after a bumpy adjustment, finds that America is the land of opportunity by discovering baseball, Jackie Robinson and the Brooklyn Dodgers. [ages 8-12]

Rules by Cynthia Lord. A really wonderful story about a girl whose special needs brother and special needs friend help her to discover the courage to just be herself. [ages 8-11]

The Pharaoh’s Secret by Marissa Moss. [ages 9-12]

Midnight for Charlie Bone series by Jenny Nimmo. Another “Harry Potter”-like series that my oldest loves. [ages 9-12]

Shiloh series by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. An excellent and award winning series about a boy rescuing a dog from his abusive neighbor. [ages 9-12]

The Kite Fighters by Linda Sue Park. Set in 15th century Korea, Korea’s Golden Age, two brothers — one skilled in kite making and the other skilled in kite flying — combine their skills to compete in a kite flying contest on behalf of the king. [ages 7-12]

Seesaw Girl by Linda Sue Park. Set during the Yi Dynasty, considered the Golden Age of Korea, the seesaw girl illustrates lives and limitations of women in a noble family. [ages 8-11]

A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park. Set in 12th century Korea during the Koryo era, an orphan who ends up working for a celebrated celadon potter is able to realize his own potential. [ages 8-12]

A Year Down Yonder by Richard Peck. I have just discovered this Newbery Award-winning author and I have to say he’s an amazing story teller. A Year Down Yonder is the Newbery Award winning book, and it’s the sequel to A Long Way From Chicago. While this book is set in a small country bumpkin town during the Great Depression, it’s a hilarious story about fifteen-year-old Mary Alice who is sent to live with her Grandma for a year during the Great Depression while her parents get situated. Grandma Dowdel is a force to be reckoned with; her resourcefulness is matched by her heart of gold and Mary Alice’s year is filled with enough drama to fill a newspaper. A Long Way from Chicago is from Mary Alice’s older brother’s perspective during their eight summers at Grandma Dowel’s farm and the antics they got into. It also gives a gentle history on how the Great Depression impacted their community. [ages 8-12]

Rickshaw Girl by Mitali Perkins. Set in Bangladesh, a sickly rickshaw driver’s daughter strives to earn money for her family. [ages 8-11]

The Lightning Thief series by Rick Riodan. This is “Harry Potter meets Greek Mythology” and it’s a fantastic read! It’s such a page-turner that I stayed up to 2 a.m. to finish it! Percy Jackson is an ADD, dyslexic 6th grade hero who has trouble staying in school because, as it turns out, he’s no ordinary human but a half-blood related to one of the big three in Greek Mythology. He must find and return Zeus’ lost lightening bolt to prevent WWIII. This series makes Greek Mythology come alive so I’ve included an Usborne Greek Mythology book that is easier and Edith Hamilton’s Mythology for those who want more details as well. The level of difficulty is slightly easier than Book 1 of Harry Potter; this book is 375 pages long, normal sized type. [ages 8-14]

Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling. You’d have to be living under a rock for over a decade not to know about Harry Potter. My 4th grade daughter is now racing through the series…I thought she didn’t read these books earlier because they were too scary. She said it was because she didn’t own them. Well, the 7 book series is $48.97; that’s a pretty good price. [ages 7-adult]

Riding Freedom by Pam Munoz Ryan. [ages 8-11]

Holes by Louis Sachar. [ages 9-12]

Mudville by Kurtis Scaletta. [ages 9-12]

The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick. This book is deceptively thick because it’s 250+ pages of illustrations that tell part of the story that I call “The Phantom of the Opera” of children’s literature. Set in 1930′s Paris, Hugo Cabret is an orphan with a talent for all things mechanical. The key to his future, he believes, is unlocking the secret of an automaton “wonder.” With other interlocking stories that weave together, this is a riveting story about the power of friendships, magic and perseverance. [ages 8-12]

The Great Wall of Lucy Wu by Wendy Wan Long Shang. [ages 9-12]

Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli. Jeffrey “Maniac” Magee, an orphan and an athlete of legendary acclaim, breaks the racial barrier existing between two neighboring towns. [ages 8-15]

The Last Giraffe series by Lauren St. John. A mom friend highly recommends this series. [ages 6-10]

The All-Of-A-Kind Family by Sydney Taylor. Apparently the newest American Girl doll is based on this book so maybe it’s more well-known now. The first book is the only one in print, but you can find the rest of the series at your public library or used on Amazon at sometimes exorbitant prices: More All-Of-A-Kind Family, All-Of-A-Kind Family Downtown, All-Of-A-Kind Family Uptown, Ella of All-Of-A-Kind Family.

Love, Ruby Lavender by Deborah Wiles. My daughter’s 3rd grade teacher’s favorite book in the world. Ruby Lavender spends the summer dealing with the absence of her beloved grandmother, who is visiting family in Hawaii. It obliquely deals with death, but in an uplifting way. The book manages to be hilarious and poignant at the same time. [ages 8-11]

Each Little Bird That Sings by Deborah Wiles. My oldest daughter’s well-read friend says that this is her new favorite book of the year. Last year, her favorite book was Love, Ruby Lavender but she says this book is better and funnier. It’s about a 10-year-old girl named Comfort whose family runs a mortuary. Despite a spate of deaths in the family and other wacky adventures, the story is both hilarious laugh-out-loud and poignant. [ages 8-11]

Back To School Fashion Finds For Kids Of All Ages At Old Navy...

I love back to school shopping with the kids. I know I know, this makes me an oddity in most of
your books but what can I say. Well, let me clarify this a bit. I loved back to school shopping when I wasn't paying for the supplies. When I was growing up my sisters, mom, grandma and I would go shopping for back to school supplies at the mall. We would spend the entire day shopping for clothes, shoes, accessories and more and go to the food court, enjoy all the booths, and just plain go 'til we dropped. I have such happy memories and now I get to share these memories with my children and hopefully give them happy memories of their own to someday share with their children. (YIKES! I'm getting old just thinking about that!) It's an exciting time of year with all the neat choices for clothing, office supplies, electronic gadgets, book bags, accessories, etc. there are out there. Luckily there are great sales to accompany these choices and one of them I found was Old Navy's Back To School Sale...

This is so true and something we should all watch out for as we supplement our once so very cautiously monitored meals and snacks with the occasional yummy treat. It starts coming at you more and more and seeping into their diets from places such as school and friend's houses before you even realize it. Our little ones have started preferring the unhealthy choices over the healthy ones and I have to tell you that it is going to be quite an uphill battle turning their preferences around once again. We are facing this uphill battle even though we did everything right in the early years so I implore you to follow the above-mentioned guidelines so that you don't have to go through this same battle but more importantly that your youngsters start out life with habits that will follow them throughout a lifetime.

Friendship bracelets are just such a fun craft for girls (and their little brothers) of all ages. Our girls are 25, 13, 10, and 8 right now and I came across this great site which has amazing bracelets to make and turned them lose with the materials and helpful instructions. You should see their designs. They're gorgeous. Summertime has been a great time for them to make these bracelets but I think that with school starting soon this is a great treat to promote new friendships and fun filled school days. Paternity Blood Tests That Work Early in a Pregnancy

With more than half of births to women under 30 now out of wedlock, it is a question that may arise more often.
Now blood tests are becoming available that can determine paternity as early as the eighth or ninth week of pregnancy, without an invasive procedure that could cause a miscarriage.
Besides relieving anxiety, the test results might allow women to terminate a pregnancy if the preferred man is not the father — or to continue it if he is.
Men who clearly know they are the father might be more willing to support the woman financially and emotionally during the pregnancy, which some studies suggest might lead to healthier babies.
And if the tests gain legal acceptance, some lawyers say, women and state governments might one day pursue child support payments without having to wait until the birth. Under current law, “until and unless the pregnancy produces a child, any costs associated with it are regarded as the woman’s personal problem,” said Shari Motro, a law professor at the University of Richmond.
The testing itself, however, can be awkward because it requires a blood sample from at least one of the possible fathers.
Courtney Herndon, after breaking up with her boyfriend, had a brief relationship with a man she regarded more as a friend. She found herself pregnant at age 19, without knowing which man was the father.
The friend also wanted to know, so he agreed to the testing. He turned out to be the father, and the two agreed on child support even before the baby was born.
“I got the test done and was able to go on with my life,” said Ms. Herndon, who lives in Fort Polk, La.
Estimates of the extent of paternal uncertainty vary.
Studies have found a discrepancy rate — when the presumed father is not the biological father — of anywhere from 0.8 percent to 30 percent, with the median being 3.7 percent, according to one review of such studies. Another study found that about 9 percent of birth certificates in Florida, even excluding births to teenage mothers, did not list the full names of the father, though it was not clear how much of this was related to uncertainty. Infant mortality was higher in those cases than if the father’s name was on the birth certificate.
It has already been possible to determine paternity during pregnancy using amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling, the same medical procedures used to test a fetus for Down syndrome. But those procedures are invasive and carry a small risk of inducing a miscarriage, so they are rarely used for paternity testing.
By contrast, the new tests require only blood samples from the pregnant woman and the potential father. And doctors generally do not have to be involved.
That could vastly expand testing, said Sara Katsanis of Duke University’s Institute for Genome Sciences and Policy. She is planning a study with one of the testing companies to see if prenatal paternity testing can reduce a pregnant woman’s stress.
Some noninvasive paternity tests have been offered over the Internet for about a decade, and there have been various complaints about inaccurate or even fraudulent results.
But experts say the technology has advanced to the point that such testing can now be done reliably. A brief paper describing one such test, developed by a company called Ravgen, was published recently in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine.
“I have no doubt that these tests will work clinically,” said Dr. Mark I. Evans, a professor at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and director of Comprehensive Genetics, a medical practice in New York that specializes in prenatal testing.
The tests analyze fragments of DNA from the fetus that are present in the mother’s blood in tiny amounts. The same approach is now also being used to noninvasively determine the gender of the fetus or whether it has Down syndrome. And researchers recently demonstrated that they could even determine a fetus’s entire genome this way.
Ravgen, a small company in Columbia, Md., has been offering its test on a limited basis and charges $950 to $1,650, depending on the circumstances, said Dr. Ravinder Dhallan, the chief executive.
Another test was developed by a company in Silicon Valley called Natera, and is marketed by DNA Diagnostics Center, a leading provider of conventional paternity tests. Thousands of the prenatal tests have been ordered since going on sale last August, executives say. The price is $1,775, compared with around $500 for a conventional postbirth paternity test.
Neither test has received a certification for accuracy that is necessary for use in child custody cases, though Natera has applied. The certifying organization, the AABB, is seriously considering whether it should certify prenatal tests, said Eduardo Nunes, senior director for policy, standards and global development at the organization, formerly known as the American Association of Blood Banks.
Still, some experts urge caution. Natera has not yet published any data about its test in peer-reviewed journals. Ravgen’s paper in The New England Journal of Medicine discussed just 30 samples. (The test correctly distinguished the father from a randomly chosen man in all 30 cases.)
Dr. Dhallan of Ravgen said the test could persuade women who learned they were pregnant after a rape to keep the baby if they learned the rapist was not the father.
Ravgen’s test has been used in a murder case. In 2008, Michael Roseboro, a funeral home director in Lancaster County, Pa., was accused of killing his wife, Jan, whose body was found in the family swimming pool.
To establish a motive, prosecutors wanted to prove that Mr. Roseboro was having an affair with another woman, who was pregnant. But they did not want to wait until the baby was born.
“We became concerned that she might have an abortion, or something would happen and we’d never be able to determine whose child it was,” said Craig Stedman, the district attorney in Lancaster County.
The evidence from the prenatal test was not introduced at trial, however, because Mr. Roseboro eventually conceded that he was the father. Mr. Roseboro, who still proclaims his innocence in his wife’s death, was sentenced to life in prison.
It is possible that early testing could mean more paternal support for a pregnant woman.
One Seattle-area woman said that when she was pregnant, with two possible fathers, “Neither one really wanted to be involved and then find out the baby wasn’t theirs later.”
When the prenatal test showed that the father was her former boyfriend, he attended the delivery and supported the child. The woman spoke on the condition of anonymity, explaining, “I’m not proud of not knowing who my son’s father was.”
In some cases DNA is not destiny. Ms. Herndon’s test showed that the baby was not her ex-boyfriend’s. But they got back together and married, and he accepted the child, who is now 16 months old.
“We view our daughter as ours, mine and my husband’s,” Ms. Herndon said. The biological father sends gifts and pays child support.

Some Great Parenting Tips

General Family

Have dinner together (at the dinner table) on a regular basis. Use it as a time for interaction. Avoid interruptions- no answering the phone, no texting, etc.

Plan family nights consistently. Whether it means going out together or a movie night at home, schedule time to be together having fun.

Schedule one on one time with your children. Kids love to feel special.

Get to know your child’s likes and dislikes; favorite color, favorite teacher, least favorite food, etc.

Make sure you express unconditional love for your children often.

When your child does something you appreciate, make sure to thank them. Kids want to be acknowledged.

Parents need to give consistent messages. If kids think they can play one parent against the other, it is a recipe for disaster.

When parents are encountering problems (i.e. marital problems, stress at work) children often pick up on the stress. Children often believe that the parent is stressed because the child did something wrong. It is important to assure the child that they are not the cause of the problem and they are still loved.

Teens

Teenagers need to understand that they have limits. Make expectations clear and follow through with enforcement.

While it is natural for teens to want independence, make sure you are spending time with them regularly. Maintain your connection. If you lose it, it is very difficult to get it back.

Make your home a gathering place for your teens friends. Get to know the friends.

Be clear with your teen when you will respect their privacy and when you feel the need to get more information from them.

School-Age Children

Give children light chores. It helps them develop a sense of responsibility.

Make sure children are getting enough physical activity. Limit T.V. and video games.

Do not over-schedule your child in sports, activities, music etc. Strike a healthy balance.

Toddlers

Set limits. Stop inappropriate/dangerous behavior. Remove the child from danger. Explain the danger briefly in understandable terms. Don’t try to reason with a toddler beyond his/her level of reasoning. Redirect the child to another activity.

“Catch” a child being good. Reinforce positive behavior.

Occasional temper tantrums are a natural expression of attention-seeking and limit testing. Remove the child to a quiet area until the behavior changes. Ask the child to let you know when they are ready to act differently.

Develop a morning routine (not too rigid). Start with several minutes of interaction (a brief “together” time). Have a personal hygiene and breakfast routine.

At age 3 or 4, allow kids to pick out their own outfits to wear (activity and weather appropriate). It encourages development of a small level of independence.

Set some “one to one” time each day with each child.

Infants

For the first six to eight weeks of life, you are totally on their schedule. You are responding to their needs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

At age 6 to 8 weeks, you can begin to try to introduce routines. More attempts can be made to structure eating schedule, sleeping schedule, bath time, etc. Don’t try to push this too hard. From day one, try to read to your child daily. Continue this through toddler years. Many studies have been done on brain development to support this.

Develop playtime routines at a very early age. Physical interaction, smiling, talking, and toys that stimulate brain development are important.

Untreated anxiety can devastate
the life of your child…

I’m a parent too, and I know there’s nothing worse than to see your child suffering with anxiety and feeling powerless to help them. Anxiety can rob your child of the life they deserve and were meant to have – one filled with joy, laughter, and fun. Left untreated, your child’s anxiety can lead to problems for them at school, with friends, with their self-esteem, and with their health. Said simply, it can steal their childhood.

Without help, children with anxiety often endure severe social problems, have poor school performance, physical illnesses, or depression. Their anxiety can continue to grow to the point where they seem to beconstantly worried or fearful – not having fun like children should be having. Children who struggle with anxiety are much more prone to becoming anxious adults that may struggle their whole lives with fear. Problem anxiety can also predispose your child to other mental health problems and dangerous behaviors such ascutting, drug and alcohol abuse, or even suicide.

Does your child have a problem with anxiety?

Take a look at some common symptoms your child may be experiencing if they’re having a problem with their anxiety:
Unexplained physical symptoms such as headaches and stomachaches.
Being nervous, jittery, and hypersensitive.
Decreased school performance or a lack of concentration.
Avoidance of social activities or not wanting to spend as much time with friends.
Tics, nervous habits, or compulsive behavior such as nail biting or hair pulling.
Dangerous behaviors such as cutting or drug and alcohol abuse.
Excessive moodiness or outbursts of anger.
Persistent worry that seems unjustified for the situation.
Sleep changes or activity level changes.
School avoidance or refusal.
Being unusually or overly self-critical.
A high need for reassurance.
Outbursts of anger or oppositional behavior, even though you know in your heart they’re a good kid, they just have all this anxious energy coming out all wrong.

What caused your child’s anxiety?

Maybe there’s a reason for your child’s anxiety that you can clearly identify like an illness or death in the family, divorce, arrival of a new sibling, or a move, but often, there’s NOTHING for you to point a finger at and you’re left wondering why they’re struggling with anxiety!

Is it genetics? Does their DNA doom them to life of anxiety and fear?

Is it the way someone in their life handles anxiety and what they may have accidentally taught your child about handling their emotions?

Is it the lifestyle your family leads? The world seems to move so fast lately because everyone has so much piled on their plate, and don’t even get me started on the economy…

Difficulties with anxiety in children is VERY common, research has shown that as many as one in ten children experience an anxiety disorder. The important thing for you to remember is that no matter the reason for your child’s anxiety, it’s NOT YOUR FAULT.

Genetics may play a role and predispose certain children to problems with anxiety, and maybe looking back there’s things you would have done differently (just like all parents, myself included). But the problem your child is having with their anxiety is NOT a reflection on you or your parenting, and most importantly, it doesn’t have to be permanent. You CAN do something about it. YOU have the power and ability to help your child change their life.
Let’s look closer at what anxiety is
and how it “tricks” your child…

Your child isn’t strange, sick, or weird. Their anxiety isn’t a disease, it’s more of what I call a “mental misunderstanding”.

We all have a self-preservation mechanism built into us called the “fight or flight” response. It’s been there for thousands and thousands of years and it did a wonderful job of keeping the human race safe instead of being eaten by saber toothed tigers! Whenever it senses a threat, it very quickly prepares your body to do one of two things…fight off the threat, or run away from it.

It accomplishes this by rapidly pumping your body full of stress chemicals like adrenaline and cortisol, so you’re as alert, focused, and strong as possible. It makes sweat pour off you, makes your heart thump in your chest, and makes it almost impossible to think about anything else except the immediate threat at hand. It happens to you, it happens to me, and it happens to your child. It’s been with us since we lived in caves, and it’s not going away anytime soon.

You’ve probably even experienced this reaction firsthand. Have you ever just narrowly avoided a car accident? Remember how one second you were driving along and then the next second you reacted instantly to avoid the crash? Your world seemed to slow down, and you didn’t THINK, you just REACTED. Even when you realized you were safe, your heart was pounding, sweat was dripping off you, and you felt like you had enough energy to run a marathon. Maybe your legs were shaking from so much adrenaline that you had to sit and wait for a moment until you felt ok to drive again.

Your fight or flight reaction was a great thing to have that day, right? It did a fantastic job protecting you, just like it’s supposed to…
Your child’s brain is simply making a mistake…

When it’s appropriate, the fight or flight reaction is great, but it’s not so wonderful when anxiety mistakenly triggers the reaction, and that’s what your child may be experiencing. It’s not that the reaction itself is wrong, it’s that the timing is horrible!

Let me give you an example…

Your child is on the way to school and thinks, if only for a split second, what I call a “what if” thought. “What if I make a mistake”, or “What if I get embarrassed”, or “What if I’m not good or capable enough or something bad happens to me”.

Whatever the thought is, it causes a little bit of anxiety, just a small trickle of the fight or flight reaction. Maybe their heart beats a bit faster, their thoughts race, or they get a tad lightheaded.

They notice those physical sensations, and it scares them, even though they may have not even noticed the original thought that caused the reaction to begin with.

Now they start to pay a great deal of attention to their body, watching it closely for more evidence that something is wrong. The physical sensations of fear make your child feel like something MUST be wrong, so their body releases even MORE anxiety producing chemicals, which scares them MORE, and the cycle continues.

They feel their body going through the instinctual fight or flight response, and they look around, scanning their environment trying to find what the “threat” is – what they need to fight or run from. They can’t find an external threat, so their focus turns internally and they begin to think that THE THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS are the threat, and their anxiety gets worse and panic can even set in. They feel an almost irresistible urge to avoid the situation, and their emotions overwhelm them.

The anxiety your child is experiencing is “tricking” them into thinking their feelings and emotions are dangerous and need to be avoided! Your child can feel like they’re stuck…
It doesn’t end there, the trick gets even worse…

Now the next time they go to school (or away from home or parents, or whatever the fear is), they may remember how they felt the last time and how terrible and frightening it was, and they worry that they’ll feel that way again, so of course, they do! They begin to associate whatever it is that they fear with those awful feelings of anxiety, and create what are known as “neural pathways” in the brain. Every time they experience the anxiety, they reinforce their fear reaction and it grows stronger…

Neural pathways are sort of like “express lanes” in your brain. They make repetitive tasks easier by allowing your mind to take shortcuts and not have to make decisions every time it experiences a common situation. It’s really how you learn almost any repetitive task or behavior, and the more often you react in a similar way, the faster and more ingrained the neural pathway becomes, until the reaction is automatic and occurs without conscious thought.

Maybe it seems hard to believe that this is how your child’s fear and anxiety was formed, but isn’t this how you teach them to tie their shoes? Early on, they had to really concentrate and pay attention to what they were doing with the laces and it was awkward…looping the rabbit ears and going down the hole, remember?

In the beginning they made a lot of mistakes, but the more they practiced and repeated the steps, the neural pathways for the task multiplied and became stronger. Eventually, they learned to tie their shoes without a second thought, just like you do. Think about it, do you THINK about how to tie your shoes? Do you still need the little rhyme about the rabbit going around the tree and down the hole? Of course not, you don’t need to think about it anymore, long ago you created strong enough neural pathways so you don’t need to think anymore, you just DO IT without any conscious thought at all, it’s automatic. Your brain doesn’t need to stop and think about what to do, it simply looks back at the neural pathways it already has and follows the same path you created decades ago.

This is how you and your child learned to do many things that are now automatic, like riding a bike, walking, or driving a car. You repeated the behavior until the neural pathways were strong enough to take over. Just like the fight or flight reaction, this is a good thing in the right circumstances, but not so great when the behavior we’re repeating and learning is WRONG.
The trick anxiety plays is so powerful it can invade
your child’s life incredibly quickly and be very
persistent, even when the fear makes no logical sense!

To make matters worse, neural pathways for things like anxiety and fear can be created far more rapidly than most other things because there’s such a strong emotional reaction attached to them.

Going back to the example, it may have taken you quite a long time to learn to tie your shoes. If you did it wrong, the consequences weren’t that big of a deal, so the neural pathways were created relatively slowly, maybe it took you 100 attempts or more before it started to become automatic. But how many times did you have to touch a hot stove before THAT response was imprinted in your memory? Once? Twice? Probably no more than that. Why?

Because just like the fight or flight reaction, your mind pays very close attention to things it considered particularly meaningful, such as threats. When you touch a hot stove, it hurts, and your brain sure doesn’t want THAT experience again, so it creates a massive amount of neural pathways right from the start. It doesn’t wait for you to burn yourself fifty times before it “learns”. This is why if you accidentally touch even a cold stove now, you instinctively pull your hand away without thinking – as if it were hot. It no longer matters what the reality is, your brain relies on the neural pathways it formed incredibly quickly after you burnt yourself on the stove many years ago.

Anything that carries with it a significant emotional response can get learned quickly. Going back to caveman days, we didn’t want to get bit by a snake a dozen times before learning to stop trying to pet them, right? We needed to learn QUICK. In the same way, when your child does something or goes someplace that at one time caused a memorable fear or anxious reaction, they react the same way the next time they go because they accidentally LEARNED that there’s a perceived danger there! Their response was frightening enough that in a very short amount of time, the anxious response became automatic, deeply ingrained in their mind, and now occurs without them even thinking about it. To them, it seems to happen instantly and comes out of nowhere, and in may ways, they’re right…
This is why I believe so many therapies for anxiety are ineffective, but here’s what you can do instead…

Now you know that the way to overcoming your child’s anxiety is to first stop the cycle of anxiety from occurring and then to change the old limiting neural pathways of anxiety, worry, and fear, and replace them with new habits of confidence and calm.

The problem is that all of this occurs on a very deep, primitive, and emotional level, and is why I believe so many programs and therapies for anxiety fail. They attempt to correct an emotional, automatic, and instinctual problem on a logical level…how could that work?

Traditional talk therapy often attempts to “explain” to your child why they don’t need to be anxious. Let me ask you, do you think your child is CHOOSING to be afraid? Do you think you just need someone to TELL THEM they’ll be fine and to stop worrying? Haven’t you already done that? Did it help?

I didn’t think so.

Like you learned, once it starts, your child’s fear is virtually out of their control. Logical explanations and talking it over won’t stop their anxiety any more than they can talk themselves out of a headache.

Medications and pills can be helpful in controlling the SYMPTOMS of your child’s anxiety, but they often don’t do ANYTHING to address the underlying CAUSE of the problem, so when they stop the medication, the anxiety can return as powerful as ever and they feel even more hopeless. Not to mention the dangerous side effects and risks associated with medicating your child…
Your child needs to learn to stop their anxiety
BEFORE it starts and develop a NEW WAY
of responding – permanently.

Who am I and why should you listen to anything I have to say?

My name is Rich Presta, and for many years I used to suffer with extreme and debilitating anxiety. It began when I was a child, and since it was never treated effectively, it stayed with me well into adulthood.

My days as a child were filled with worry, fear, anxiety, and an overwhelming feeling that I was different…like I didn’t quite measure up to the rest of the kids at school. It was hard for me to make and keep friends, I was always a bit awkward and uncomfortable, and I just seemed to have so much more to worry about than the other kids around me. It seems like I find these everywhere. They're in the toilet, the kitchen sink, the vacuum cleaner, my drawers, my pockets, my purse, my hair, my bath tub, the car, the washing machine, the lint filter of the dryer, the glove compartment, and of course always right in the middle in the floor of the dark living room that you just happen to be really quickly running across with your bare feet to retrieve something or check a lock, etc.... Well you get the point they're everywhere and that's okay with me because they are awesome and my son loves them! They keep him busy for hours and hours and they exercise that amazing engineer or architect's brain living in his little bitty head somewhere. Our girls love them too and on numerous occasions mommy has played with them while they were dreaming of their future princes and palaces and all of the amazing drama that awaits them when they become princesses and rule their kingdoms. I'm lucky enough to be able to bring these great savings your way so please check them out and don't forget all those young imagineers that spend too much time at our feet watching television when they could be building brilliant works of art!!!

I love these books and it's amazing really how many different times I have come across them when looking for reading books for various groups of children of mine. I was of course first introduced to them when I was a young girl myself. Then when my baby sister who was 12 years younger than me was born, I, of course being designated as having the dutiful and very helpful :O) most important job in the whole world, the big sister (DUN DUN DUH :O)), had the most important job in the world of reading to her and then as time passed helping her learn to read, which she did in lickity split time (How could you go anywhere else with great books like The Berenstain Bears as valuable learning to read tools). Then there were the numerous babysitting jobs where the homes either had the books or my mom would so tenderly pick to add to many other great and entertaining selections to pack in my babysitting bag of tricks. I had them with me throughout college as most of my curriculum was centered on early childhood education and development not to mention the numerous babysitting gigs I took on to make extra money. I ran across them again in Germany while I was employed as a nanny for an ARMY Military Intelligence Couple with a five year old daughter. Then when I had my first baby I yet again found myself at the greatest bookstore in the whole world, The Tattered Cover Bookstore in Cherry Creek, Colorado, gathering every last one of them that the store carried. I could keep going here but let's just say there were many other occasions in which I used them or came across them up until now, with my a little bit later in life baby bunch of 3 all in the midst of learning to read and everyday joys of being read to, and I imagine they'll be around for quite a while longer throughout Sunday School and Fundraisers and yet again someday when I hopefully will be blessed with many healthy grandchildren for me and my husband to read to and snuggle with at nap time. listed below are some of my favorites and with Easter being just around the corner I plan on asking the Easter Bunny to put one in their baskets for so many reasons but the biggest one of course being, to reduce the gobs and gobs of chocolates and sugary sweet treats that seem to accumulate faster than I know what to do with in a house of 5 children! It is amazing to me that it still gets in the house no matter how hard I try to keep it out and for the love of God how does it even fit with my Peeps hips, tummy, and bottom taking up most of the room in our house to begin with???:O)
