Come and discover what camping at LOMC is all about!

Meet new friends, hike, canoe, make crafts, enjoy campfire worship.... All in the spirit of summer camp!

Hey Parents,

This is a great way for your child to get comfortable with camp before they stay for an entire week this summer!

$65.00 Includes overnight accommodations, breakfast and lunch

on Saturday.

1st - 12th grade.

Create a video that tells why you love camp at Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center, upload it to YouTube, and you could win a week of FUN at LOMC!

Here's what you need to do:

Ask your parents for permission.
Create a video that is 30-90 seconds long.
Tell why you love camp or why you want to go to camp (even if it's your first time). Use creativity and humor (if you like), but keep it clean and respectful.
Include the words "Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center" and "LOMC.org" either spoken or displayed at least once within the video.
Upload your finished video to YouTube.
Copy and paste the paragraph below into the Description of the video:

Invite EVERYONE you know to view the video.

By submitting your video, you give LOMC the right to use your video (in whole or in part) for promotional purposes. LOMC staff reserves the right to disqualify any video for any reason.
The video with the most "Likes" by Monday, June 6 at noon will win a week of camp (up to $450). If you have already paid for camp, you will be reimbursed up to $450 of your camp cost. The winner can choose to gift the prize to a different individual to attend camp. Winners will be contacted in June.

Eligible members are designated Choice Dollars based on their:

Insurance premiums;

Contract values;

And Thrivent Financial volunteer leadership.

How Do I Direct My Designated Choice Dollars?

Choose from Lutheran organizations nationwide, including LOMC. It's easy!

1.	Search for your preferred organization(s).
2.	Direct Choice Dollars online now or call 800-THRIVENT (800-847-4836) and state "Thrivent Choice."

Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center Announces New Environmental Education Director

What IS

Environmental Education?

These days, children have a multitude of indoor activities. From video games and television, to the Internet and on-line chat rooms and blogs, youth in our country can reach out and explore the world electronically, but they may never really experience it.

Pictures and descriptions are nice, but what does a forest really smell like? What does the skin of a toad feel like? Are snakes really slimy, or do they just look that way?

Richard Louv recently wrote a book titled Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder which outlines several physical and social health problems children can develop from a life indoors.

In addition, several states have started No Child Left Inside campaigns to promote healthy, outdoor activities.

With the mounting evidence and expert opinions pointing to a need for youth to unplug from the electric world and experience the outside one, parents and teachers should embrace any opportunity for children to venture beyond familiar walls.

LOMC's EE program can foster a greater understanding and appreciation for nature and communities.

LOMC Welcomes New Environmental Education Director, Kelley Huston!

Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center (LOMC) is proud to welcome Kelley Huston as Interim Environmental Education Director. Kelley plans to utilize the skills God has given her to spread His word to others. She comes to the job with knowledge and expertise and with excitement for a new and different challenge.

Kelley will be working with schools to help students connect what they learn in their classrooms with the physical world surrounding them. This incredible program allows for unique programming that explores a variety of ecosystems. From rolling prairie, to hardwood forests, to deep-carved ravines, to sandstone outcroppings, LOMC has the capacity to help your school develop a schedule to more deeply explore subjects the students currently are studying in school.

Guests this spring to the Environmental Education program are Jefferson Middle School, Villa Park; Sipley School, Woodridge; St. Paul Lutheran School, Rochelle; and Edgewood School Woodridge. They will receive a greater understanding and appreciation for nature and communities. The courses taught not only inspire wonder but also meet state education requirements.

Kelley has worked at LOMC recently as an EE instructor and in the 1980s. She has the knowledge to lead the current classes of archery, crate stacking, pond study, ravine hikes, and is trained on the teambuilding course. In addition, Kelley also taught environmental education at White Pines Ranch in the late 1980s and taught all of the courses offered. She has also worked in Oregon schools teaching music and substitute teaching.

Kelley brings innovative ideas for other environmental skills that will bring information to students in a new and exciting way. Kelley plans to make the orienteering course easier for students to understand. Kelley's Christian faith is very important. She understands that many of the school groups who come to the facility are not necessarily of a religious nature, but believes her faith still comes through in her treatment of others.

Kelley lives in Oregon, IL with her husband Patrick, daughters Lexie and Brittany, and son Grant.

LOMC Swing Choir Tour Announced

Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Graddy as 2011 Swing Choir Tour Director and Accompanist.

Michael, his wife Karin and their three children are members of Salem Lutheran Church, Sycamore. He is a graduate of Northern Illinois University, DeKalb. Michael and family have been frequent guests at LOMC for family camps and retreats. He was active in choirs and musicals throughout his school years. Michael is an accompanist and vocalist for many community events and churches and was accompanist for the Wesley Tour Choir at NIU. He is CFO of Graddy Solutions, a web design and consulting firm he co-owns with his wife.

Michael is excited about the opportunity to accompany and direct the LOMC Swing Choir tour and continue the tradition of swing choir performances for more than 25 years.

Brandi Peters will be the Choreographer. Brandi is a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clifton where her stepfather serves as pastor. She is a freshman at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin. She has danced for 13 years in ballet, tap, jazz, pointe and hip-hop. She is an alumnus of the LOMC Swing Choir Tour. At Carthage Brandi participates in Belly Dancing and numerous clubs and organizations including intramural soccer and sand volleyball. Brandi plans to major in athletic training and go on for a masters degree in Physical Therapy.

The 2011 Swing Choir tour will begin July 21 and do ten 10 concerts over a nine day period. The Choir will perform at the following Lutheran churches: First, DeKalb; First, Ohio; St. Mark, Aurora; Living Hope, Frankfort; St. Paul, Sterling; Peace, New Lenox; Messiah, Park Ridge; St. Mark, Washington and Salem, Moline. The Swing Choir will conclude the tour at Trinity, Harvard on July 29.

We welcome Michael and Brandi to the LOMC family and look forward to their leadership in 2011.

Jesse Tree Advent Retreat -- 3-6 graders $60 per camper

December 3 -4 2010

Campers will make a devotional ornaments to take home and engage family in short meaningful time throughout the advent season. The Jesse Tree is a unique Advent tree that can be very useful for teaching children about the Bible at Christmas, and a fun activity, too!

The Jesse Tree is named from Isaiah 11:1: "A shoot will spring forth from the stump of Jesse, and a branch out of his roots." It is a vehicle to tell the Story of God in the Old Testament, and to connect the Advent Season with the faithfulness of God across 4,000 years of history.
