Last Monday we had a very special evening in the hands of our Toastmaster Darah Lanlehin. She performed the role for the first time and did an amazing job keeping everyone in high energy through all the evening.

The question of the evening for everyone with a role was what you would like to see in the Olympics; interestingly several of the members still don’t remember having provided some of the weird and funny answers to the question.

Our timekeeper Christian Asare kept us on time and our grammarian Laura McCracken gave us the word of the evening “Jubilant”.

Table Topics Mistress Catherine Slater had a thoughtful set of questions, packing 12 Table topics and since she had a bit of extra time, she asked the audience if there was a member who hasn’t been included in her list, <strike>several people pointed at</strike> George immediately raised his hand and stood up to deliver the last table topic. Great job Catherine and we hope this becomes the norm for future Table Topic Masters.

Our Table Topics Evaluator Denise Tyrell provided us with very thoughtful commendations and recommendations.

On the second part of the evening we had 4 amazing speeches. The first one was Olga Pirog with her speech number 3 titled “In the search of happiness” in which she gave us a formula for happiness, which is a combination of your attitude on how you perceive events in your life, then your conditions of living, and finally the amount and type and amount of decisions that you can take in your everyday life. The second speech was Richard Russell’s speech number 4, in which he told us that actually the secret of happiness is to eat a good piece of beef. It was a very convincing speech.

Glenn Jones had a speech from the advanced manual entitled “Changes” in which he described how politics and religion have changed in the last 50 years. The last speech was delivered by Jenny Cutler and was entitled “Sex and Chips”. This speech, which felt more like coming from the Taboo night program, had everyone super engaged and taking notes.

Like you, we’re really proud of our diverse membership and since our first meeting, many years ago, we’ve ensured that everyone has enjoyed themselves and had a brilliant time at every meeting and at every event.
What an evening not to miss! Taboo night is a special event in our calendar where we include topics that we don’t regularly address in our sessions: sex, politics and religion.

Our amazing Toastmaster Glenn Jones started this Taboo night by putting us in the right mind set with a very energetic and provocative introduction: What gets you hot under the collar? Our Timekeeper Jane Chambers reminded us that it’s not good to finish too early.

It couldn’t be a real Taboo night if we didn’t try new things. The first one was a challenge assumed by our witty Table Topics Mistress Jenny Cutler calling 18 participants to her thoughtful and stimulating set of questions. In an amazing display of time management, structure and great feedback Jo Holmes delivered the 18 Table Topics evaluations right under the red light.

The second thing that we tried in the taboo night was that instead of having regular speeches we had prepared debates. Each debater signed up for a topic beforehand and prepared a 3-4 minute speech to present their argument.

For the first debate, Nigel Cutts and Sonalini Gunasekera addressed the topic of Marriage: Awesome! Vs “so Yesterday”, where Sonalini won most of the votes from the audience. The second debate was on Human Rights: something to take seriously or not by Christian Asare and Simon O’Mahoney, with Christian winning the audience. ThenDanny Callaghan and Rachel Luft debated on the topic “Is it better to be a girl or a boy?”, with Rachel getting most of the votes. And the last debate was on the topic of Compensation for bankers and teachers: who should be paid more, by Andrej Kuttruf and Stephan von Posern, Andrej getting the majority of the votes.

Finally our General evaluator Paul Carroll commended us saying that we did a great job descending to the occasion!

Our president Jessie MacNeil-Brown opened the session reminding us that Toastmasters is all about communication, leadership, listening, and friendship. And our Toastmaster, Jenny Cutler, enthusiastically guided us through the evening introducing the different sections.

Timekeeper Monica Chong explained to us her role with an analogy on how early people prefer to arrive at the airport, “similarly you shouldn’t arrive at the end of your speech too early or too late. Grammarian Sinead Mhuircheartaigh introduced us to the word of the evening: “lucky”.

Richard Russell chaired the table topics by asking us to explain “factoids” about ourselves, from driving a tractor in India to setting one’s bedroom on fire at age 7. Alison O’Mahony did a very skilful evaluation of the table topics, providing great commendations and recommendations (including a reference to the number of times our president smiles).

And if everything else fails just ask Andrew Chucks”. Sally Maier-Yip, in a speech from one of the advanced manuals gave us great tips on how to love ourselves more. And finally, for the Cardinals Challenge we had the courageous Alex Hancock bringing together “Rowing, Prince Harry and salt”.

Last Monday’s meeting had an atmosphere of fun and thoughtfulness. We stepped back a bit to ask ourselves about our criteria to define high quality.

Our enthusiastic Toastmaster, Monica Chong gave us a list with the criteria used by contest judges to define a good speech. She also asked us what criteria we use to evaluate things in life. Word of the day from grammarian Andrej Kuttruff was “lackadaisical”, unfortunately we were a bit lackadaisical to use it. Our toastmaster Danny Callaghan skilfully explored the world of advice, the responses included best and worst advice, advice for approaching the opposite sex and even some advice for Kate Middleton and David Cameron.

Henry Lam’s inspiring icebreaker conveyed his amazing vision on sustainable food for everyone and left us wondering when he will cook for us. Sinead Mhuircheartaigh transported us in our seats with a beautiful account of her year in Paris, a great mix of lyrical language and hard comedy.

Trang Le enthusiastically acted her speech “Examples of parenting techniques”. She reminded us that there are different techniques but one thing in common is love. Jess Forster in her last speech before maternity leave encouraged us to pick a few small changes that can make a difference in global warming. We even filled a form that she will hold us accountable for when she comes back in September. General Evaluator, Glenn Jones: “Fantastic meeting, I look forward to the next one”.

Jessie Macneil-Brown, our President, welcomed us on a snowy night and pointed out that Toastmasters is not only about making progress on your speaking skills but also about personal improvement, leadership and friendship.

“What do you do on a freezing cold, miserable night? You go to Toastmasters!” reminded us our Toastmaster, Glen Jones, keeping warm with his woolly hat, and setting up the theme of the evening “freezing cold miserable night”

Our Timekeeper –Caroline Ellingham– explained the Timekeeper role and Denise Tyrell, our grammarian stated that her role is fun: you listen, feedback and challenge. The word of the day is “weather”.

Our Table Topics

Monica Chong, Table Topics Master, chose a theme that almost everybody has a strong opinion about: Facebook.

Saket Modi, “I’m on Facebook for the right reasons, I post photos and connect with friends I’ve lost touch with.”

Gino Coquis, “If I had to post my mood I’d share with my 700 friends that I’m excited to be at Toastmasters”.

Maggy Etheridge, “I’m not on Facebook because I prefer to be with my friends rather than seeing them through a computer”.

Dara Lanlehin, “First thing I’ll do if I became rich is call my mum and say: Mum, I’m rich, don’t worry about a thing I’ll take care of you”.

Danny Callaghan, “What avatar would you be? “I would create an avatar that would do all the online things that I don’t want to do”.

Sinead Ni Mhuircheartaigh, “I would be the Davos woman airlifted from meeting to meeting”.

Tanya Alekseeva, “I wouldn’t change anything in my life but if I had to redesign something it would be to gain confidence to come back in 2 weeks”.

Patrick, “I would “Like” being here right now because I can feel an energy in this room that is remarkable”.

Simon O’Mahoney, “On ways to communicate within Cardinals “Communication is quite appropriate, in fact Cardinals is frighteningly communicative”.

Caroline Ellingham, “Probably I wouldn’t like to reunite with old friends. If I wanted to do that I would have done it already”

Jason Belne, Would you invest in Facebook? “I’m sick of hearing about this IPO”.

Allison O’Mahoney, “To the question “What is the most important thing to do?” The best leaders often answer : To Listen”.

Jo Holmes, our table topics evaluator provided amazing tips and commendations to the 12 topics speakers within time. And our sergeant at arms Dara Lanlehin introduced our 8 guests of the evening.

Laura McCracken video recorded the prepared speeches.

Olga Pirog, Icebreaker - Where do you come from? “London looks like the world was shrunk and fit into this city. Everybody can find themselves here”.

Evaluated by Nigel Cutts

Richard Russell took his chances by choosing a rather complex topic “Persuasion is all in the mind, in their mind”. The outcome was an amazing speech number 3 where we could see new angles of Richard’s speaking talent.

Evaluated by Saket Modi

Laura McCracken gave us a speech from the advanced manual full of tips on how to approach Job Searching “The secret sauce of job searching is mindset, focus and habit”

Evaluated by Sally Maier-Yip

And finally Gilly Cutts dazzled us with her take on the Cardinals Challenge. She was given 3 randomly picked words: TV, iron, and Australia and she had to come up with a speech on the spot. She structured the speech amazingly by converting the 3 words in 3 confessions: Having a TV in the bedroom, her passion for the meditative powers of ironing and “Would I go back to Australia? …maybe not”.

Evaluated by Jessie Macneil-Brown

General Evaluator: Hilary Briggs, gave the club and those that had not yet been evaluated some useful feedback.
