An offshore magnitude 7.8 earthquake has rocked the southern Philippines, killing at least 35 people, injuring more than 200 others and sending a 3ft tsunami into nearby coasts, officials said.

Several mostly low-rise buildings collapsed or sustained heavy damage in the hard-hit city of General Santos, and tsunami damage was reported in at least one southern coastal village.

Smaller waves were measured in Indonesia and Palau and as far away as southern Japan.

The quake also triggered a landslide in Glan in the province of Sarangani, that killed 13 villagers, Rene Punzalan, a provincial disaster mitigation official, told the DZBB radio network.

Four other villagers died in Sarangani, he said.

The major earthquake was the strongest to hit the Philippines this year, said Teresito Bacolcol, the director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. He warned people to seek advice before returning to damaged buildings and houses, which could collapse due to aftershocks.

The United States, a treaty ally of the Philippines, said it was co-ordinating with Manila and was ready to support Philippine response efforts. France, Japan and New Zealand also expressed support.

“Our pick-up truck suddenly jerked and I thought we had a flat tyre,” Rod Sosmena, regional director of the Office of Civil Defence, told the Associated Press from the hard-hit port city of General Santos, where he was travelling when the quake struck.

“The shaking was very strong and people dashed out of houses into the streets.”

More than 100 students in uniforms and a dozen teachers had gathered for a flag-raising ceremony in a coconut tree-ringed school compound in the rural town of Malita in the province of Davao Occidental when the ground shook, turning the first day of school after a two-month summer break into chaos.

“Their excitement on the first day of school turned to trauma,” school principal Rosavel Cachuela told AP.

At least four people remained missing in General Santos, a port city of more than 700,000 people and a regional hub for the tuna export industry.

Search and rescue teams worked to find people who may have been trapped in a supermarket, a warehouse, a school, and other small buildings that either collapsed or were severely damaged, officials said.

The quake was centred at sea off Mindanao, the second most populous island in the Philippine archipelago. According to Mr Bacolcol, the quake occurred at a depth of 20 miles, about 20 miles south-west of the town of Maasim in Sarangani.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr ordered the cancellation of classes and directed disaster response agencies to immediately get to work in quake-hit provinces, saying “the national government is moving and we will not leave Mindanao behind”.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said the threat of a tsunami largely passed about five hours after the quake. Philippine officials also lifted a tsunami warning by mid-afternoon.

Aside from the landslide in Sarangani, most of the other deaths were caused by collapsing buildings and falling debris, including in a damaged mosque, in the southern provinces of South Cotabato and Davao Occidental, and on Balut Island, according to disaster mitigation officials.

Waves of 3ft were monitored in the provinces of Sultan Kudarat and Sarangani. A 4.6ft wave hit at one time in the town of Kiamba.

The quake was also felt in the Malaysian state of Sabah on Borneo. Sabah is just a boat ride away from the southern Philippines.

Waves up to 7.8 inches were detected on the remote Japanese island of Chichijima and the central Japanese town of Kushimoto, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The Philippines is often hit by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of seismic faults around the ocean.

The archipelago is also battered by about 20 typhoons and tropical storms each year, making it one of the world’s most disaster-prone countries.

FIFA has again amended its water bottle policy for the upcoming World Cup in North America, allowing fans to bring in one sealed, disposable 590ml bottle into stadiums.

Ticket holders had previously been permitted an empty, transparent and reusable bottle up to one litre but an update earlier this week confirmed reusable bottles were no longer permitted.

The move was criticised by fan groups and scientific experts, who were already concerned about the impact of extreme heat on the welfare of spectators, while Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer branded the measure “wrong” and said it was “about making money”.

But FIFA has partially backtracked on the heavy-handed policy as a post from the governing body said: “All fans will be permitted to bring in one, soft, plastic, 20 ounces (590ml), factory sealed disposable water bottle into any FIFA World Cup 2026 match in the USA and Canada.”

World Cup 2026 chief operating officer, Heimo Schirgi added: “What is not allowed are hard-sided resealable water containers, which could pose a safety and security risk.”

Fans attending last summer’s Club World Cup in the United States had been permitted to bring empty bottles in with them. Water was also on sale at Club World Cup stadia, at prices between £3 and £4.50.

FIFA had said on Tuesday the ban’s purpose was to “prevent risk and injury to players and attendees” but Starmer told LBC on Friday: “It’s just wrong. And I can’t help but think that it’s about making money.

“So you can’t bring plastic bottles in but you can buy a bottle of water when you get in the crowd? And then it’ll be expensive. The tickets themselves cost a fortune, far too expensive in my view.

“So the ticket sales are too high. And this is the wrong policy.”

French police detained 780 people involved in violent clashes in Paris and other French cities that erupted on Saturday night after Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) won the Champions League title.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said 57 officers were wounded, with most suffering minor injuries, as football fans set off fires and vandalised shops. One small group even tried to storm a Paris police station.

Mr Nunez said at a news conference on Sunday that “the situation has been largely brought under control”.

“Most of the celebrations took place peacefully” across the French capital, he said, noting most incidents happened in the Champs Elysees area and close to the Parc des Princes stadium in western Paris where fans had gathered to watch the match.

PSG supporters celebrate after the Champions League final between Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal

Police also intervened five times overnight to prevent people from blocking traffic on the main ring road around Paris, he said.

Mr Nunez said incidents took place in about 15 cities in France, describing “one to two” shops vandalised in each other than Paris. He said 780 people were detained in all, with 480 of them in the Paris area alone.

The Paris prosecutors’ office said 277 people have been formally placed in police custody, including 82 minors, for alleged offences. Most were for assault of police officers while other allegations include theft, vandalism and disturbing the public order.

One serious accident involved a driver losing control of a car that rammed into a restaurant’s terrace, leaving two people wounded including one seriously, Mr Nunez said.

But he said that planned celebrations for the team’s win on Sunday afternoon at the Champ de Mars, near the Eiffel Tower, would go ahead as scheduled. He warned that police would respond with “firmness and determination” to any potential violence.

The PSG team will then be hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee presidential palace.

Fans began celebrating in Paris after the final whistle on Saturday evening in Budapest, Hungary, where Paris Saint-Germain won by beating Arsenal on penalties in a dramatic final.

Fans marched along the avenues near Paris’s Arc de Triomphe monument, with some setting off flares and blaring car horns. Around 20,000 people gathered on the Champs-Elysees, where police worked to contain the crowd.

The Paris police prefecture said smaller groups caused disturbances in various locations, with some vandalising shops and setting fire to rubbish and self-service bicycles in the streets. Cars were also set ablaze.

Those who attempted to storm a police station in the upmarket 8th arrondissement were dispersed, police said.

In May last year following PSG’s first title, 201 people were injured in the French capital and police made more than 500 arrests across France.

Ugandan authorities on Wednesday ordered the closure of the border with Democratic Republic of the Congo “with immediate effect” as cases surge there of a rare type of Ebola and as others emerge at home.

An Ebola taskforce led by vice president Jesca Alupo made the decision after a rise in the number of Ugandan health workers exposed to the virus by Democratic Republic of the Congo patients who crossed the border before the outbreak was declared on May 15.

“No country should close its borders or place any restrictions on travel and trade. Such measures are usually implemented out of fear and have no basis in science,” the World Health Organisation said in its declaration of this outbreak as a public health emergency of international concern, while acknowledging that neighbouring countries are at high risk.

The WHO added: “They push the movement of people and goods to informal border crossings that are not monitored, thus increasing the chances of the spread of disease.”

It said infected people or those who have been in contact with them should not undertake international travel unless it is a medical evacuation.

The border between Uganda and Democratic Republic of the Congo is several hundred miles long and crossed by numerous footpaths beyond formal border posts.

Health authorities in Democratic Republic of the Congo are struggling to contain the outbreak that the WHO has said is outpacing them, after the rare Bundibugyo type of Ebola was confirmed weeks late as tests were carried out for a more common type.

The number of suspected Ebola cases in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo is nearing 1,000, with at least 220 suspected deaths.

Democratic Republic of the Congo’s health ministry on Tuesday said 101 cases have been confirmed, and they are looking into more than 3,000 possible contacts.

Challenges include the threat of armed groups in the east of the country, a large number of displaced people and poor infrastructure.

Uganda has reported seven cases of Ebola, including the first case of a 59-year-old man who died in Kampala, the capital, on May 14.

While the Ebola case load in Uganda is not spiking, the number of people exposed to infection via health workers has been rising.

“They have families, and so the number has been increasing,” Dr Diana Atwine, permanent secretary of the ministry of health, said of health workers.

Travel across the border will be authorised only in emergency cases, including for the Ebola response, cargo or security reasons, she said.

She said she was dismayed to see some Ugandans forming crowds to celebrate Arsenal as British Premier League champions. The team has a large following in Uganda.

“I don’t understand,” Dr Atwine said, urging Ugandans to be vigilant, avoid shaking hands and use sanitiser.

Pope Leo XIV made a historic apology on Monday for the role the Holy See itself played in legitimising slavery and for having failed to condemn it for centuries, calling the Vatican’s record a “wound in Christian memory”.

Past popes have apologised for Christians’ involvement in the transatlantic slave trade.

But no pope has ever publicly acknowledged, much less apologised for, the role that past popes themselves played in giving European sovereigns explicit authority to subjugate and enslave “infidels”.

The first US-born pope, whose family history includes both enslaved people and slave owners, delivered the apology in his first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, (Magnificent Humanity), which was released Monday.

The sweeping manifesto is about safeguarding humanity in an era of increasing reliance on artificial intelligence.

Leo raised the transatlantic slave trade in relation to what he called the new forms of slavery and colonialism that the digital revolution is fuelling, such as the unregulated labour required to procure rare minerals needed for AI chips.

In doing so, Leo responded to decades of calls by black American Catholics, activists and scholars for the Holy See to atone for its own role in the colonial-era trade in human beings.

“It is impossible not to feel deep sorrow when contemplating the immense suffering and humiliation endured by so many in stark contrast to their immeasurable dignity as persons infinitely loved by the Lord,” Leo wrote.

“For this, in the name of the Church, I sincerely ask for pardon.”

The Vatican has said that it always upheld the dignity of all human beings as children of God.

But a series of 15th-century directives from the Vatican authorised Portuguese sovereigns to conquer Africa and the Americas and enslave non-Christians.

In 1452, for example, Pope Nicholas V issued the papal bull Dum Diversas, which gave the Portuguese king and his successors the right “to invade, conquer, fight and subjugate” and take all possessions, including land, of “Saracens, and pagans, and other infidels, and enemies of the name of Christ” anywhere.

The bull also gave the Portuguese permission “to reduce their persons to perpetual slavery”.

That bull and another issued three years later, Romanus Pontifex, formed the basis of the Doctrine of Discovery, the theory that legitimised the colonial-era seizure of land in Africa and the Americas.

Nicholas V’s permissions to the Portuguese were confirmed or renewed by Pope Callixtus III in 1456, Pope Sixtus IV in 1481, and Pope Leo X in 1514, according to the Rev Christopher J. Kellerman, a Jesuit priest and author of All Oppression Shall Cease: A History of Slavery, Abolitionism, and the Catholic Church.

Spanish kings received the rights for the Americas.

In 2023, the Vatican formally repudiated the Doctrine of Discovery, but it never formally rescinded, abrogated or rejected the bulls themselves.

The Vatican says that a later bull, Sublimis Deus in 1537, reaffirmed that indigenous people should not be deprived of their liberty or the possession of their property, and were not to be enslaved.

In his encyclical, Leo recalled that his namesake, Pope Leo XIII was the first pope to explicitly condemn slavery in 1888, though that was long after many countries had already abolished it.

Before that, in antiquity and the Middle Ages, even church institutions had slaves.

Leo said that it was not possible to judge the morality of the decisions with today’s standards.

“Yet neither can we deny or diminish the delay with which both society and the church came to denounce the scourge of slavery,” he said.

The pope said that the church has long affirmed the dignity of every human being as the basis of its doctrine, “even if it took eighteen centuries for its full incompatibility with slavery to be explicitly recognised”.

“This constitutes a wound in Christian memory, one from which we cannot consider ourselves detached,” he said.

Leo said that the church today must firmly condemn all forms of trafficking related to the digital technological revolution “if we want to avoid the need to ask for pardon again in the future for having failed to respect the treasure of human dignity that is required by our faith”.

According to genealogical research published by Henry Louis Gates Jr, 17 of Leo’s American ancestors were black, listed in census records as mulatto, black, Creole or a free person of colour.

His family tree includes slaveholders and enslaved people, Mr Gates wrote in The New York Times.

Russia used the powerful hypersonic Oreshnik ballistic missile during a mass drone and missile attack on Kyiv that killed at least four people, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said, marking the third time the weapon has been used in the four-year war.

The intense aerial assault overnight into Sunday damaged buildings across the Ukrainian capital, including near government offices, residential buildings, schools and a market, Ukrainian authorities said. About 100 people were wounded in the attack.

Air raid sirens blared through the night as smoke billowed across the city from strikes.

The attack included 600 strike drones and 90 air, sea and ground-launched missiles, according to Ukraine’s Air Force. Ukrainian air defences destroyed and jammed 549 drones and 55 missiles. Around 19 missiles failed to reach targets, the Air Force said.

The Oreshnik, which is capable of carrying nuclear or conventional warheads, struck the city of Bila Tserkva in the Kyiv region, Mr Zelensky said on Telegram.

Russia’s defence ministry later confirmed it used the Oreshnik, as well as other missile types, to strike Ukrainian “military command and control facilities”, air bases and military industrial enterprises.

The ministry added the attack was retaliation for Ukrainian strikes on “civilian facilities on Russian territory”, without immediately giving detail.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday denounced a drone strike on a college dormitory in Russian-occupied eastern Ukraine, which Moscow blamed on Kyiv. He said there were no military or law enforcement facilities near the college, and he had ordered the Russian military to retaliate.

The death toll from that strike had risen to 21, Russian authorities said late on Saturday, and 42 other people had been wounded.

It marks the third time the Oreshnik missile, which Mr Putin has said streaks at 10 times the speed of sound and is capable of destroying underground bunkers “three, four or more floors down”, has been used in Ukraine.

Mr Zelensky said not all the ballistic missiles were intercepted and most of the strikes hit Kyiv, the primary target of the attack.

The apparent interception failures underscored Ukraine’s chronic shortage of air defence missiles capable of downing ballistic missiles. Kyiv relies heavily on US Patriot air defence systems to intercept such weapons, but interceptors remain in short supply and are among Ukraine’s most urgent requests to its Western partners.

Kyiv’s European allies, including France’s Emmanuel Macron and Germany’s Friedrich Merz, condemned the Russian strikes and use of the Oreshnik in statements published on Sunday.

Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, said top diplomats from EU states will meet within days to “discuss how to dial up the international pressure on Russia”.

Kyiv resident Svitlana Onofryichuk, 55, said: “It was a terrible night, and there had never been anything like it in the entire war.

“I am very sorry that I have to say goodbye to Kyiv now, I am not staying there anymore, there is no possibility.

“My job is gone, everything is gone, everything has burned down.”

Yevhen Zosin, 74, a city resident who witnessed the attack, said the moment he heard an explosion he rushed to save his dog.

“Then there was another explosion and she and I were thrown back like a pin by the shock wave. We both survived, she and I. My apartment was blown to pieces,” he said.

Russia first used the multiple-warhead Oreshnik on the Ukrainian city of Dnipro in November 2024. It was used a second time in January in the western Lviv region.

Mr Putin has said the weapon travels “like a meteorite” and is immune to any missile defence system, adding that several such missiles, even fitted with conventional warheads, could be as devastating as a nuclear strike.

A heatwave has gripped large parts of India with roads and markets emptying during afternoons and some farmers switching to night-time work to avoid scorching temperatures.

The India Meteorological Department forecast maximum temperatures on Thursday of around 45C in the capital, New Delhi, where authorities have opened temporary “cooling zones” to help people cope.

The weather department warned conditions will likely persist across several northern regions in the coming days, with temperatures staying well above seasonal averages. Authorities urged people to stay indoors during the hottest hours and take precautions against heat-related illnesses.

India declares a heatwave whenever temperatures are above 40C in the plains and 30C or more in its hilly regions.

The extreme heat has disrupted daily life across several northern states.

In some parts of Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, roads and markets have closed in the afternoons as people stayed indoors while some traders shifted work to early mornings. Farmers began working at night because daytime conditions became unbearable.

The heat also disrupted schools, with authorities in several areas announcing early summer holidays and suspending classes as the maximum temperature shot up to 48.2C on Tuesday in the city of Banda.

Health authorities urged people to avoid going outdoors during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated and seek medical help if they experience symptoms such as dizziness or high fever.

In New Delhi, residents and tourists sought relief from the heat inside cooling shelters set up across the capital. The shaded space provides air coolers, fans, drinking water and oral rehydration solutions to help people deal with the extreme heat.

Climate experts say India’s rising temperatures are part of a broader global pattern linked to climate change.

India has faced more frequent and intense heatwaves in recent years, with all of its warmest years on record occurring in the last decade.

Studies by public health experts found that up to 1,116 people have died every year between 2008 and 2019 due to heat.

Public health experts say the true number of heat-related deaths is likely to be in the thousands, but because heat is often not listed on death certificates, many deaths are not counted in official figures.

A Spanish court has acquitted Colombian singer Shakira in a tax fraud case, ordering the government to return more than 55 million euros (£48 million) in wrongly imposed fines, a court document said.

The decision follows years of tax troubles in Spain for the superstar.

The ruling relates to a dispute over the 2011 tax year in which Spanish tax authorities did not prove that the singer was a resident of Spain, the Madrid-based court said in its decision.

For a person to be considered a tax resident in Spain, she must spend more than 183 days in the country.

Spanish authorities were only able to prove that Shakira lived in Spain that year for a total of 163 days, the court said, ordering the treasury to reimburse the singer the tax paid plus interest.

Spain’s tax agency argued that at the time Shakira was tied to Spain through a relationship with now-retired football player Gerard Pique, and that she based her main economic activities in the country.

But the High Court ruled that the relationship could not be legally equated to a marital one, nor was it proven that “the main centre or base” of Shakira’s activities or economic interests in 2011 were directly or indirectly located in Spain.

“There was never any fraud, and the tax agency itself was never able to prove otherwise, simply because it wasn’t true,” Shakira said in a statement provided by her lawyers.

Spain’s treasury is to reimburse the singer 60 million euros (almost £52 million), including interest, Shakira’s lawyer said.

“This resolution comes after an eight-year ordeal that has taken an unacceptable toll, reflecting a lack of rigor in administrative practices,” her lawyer Jose Luis Prada said in a statement.

In 2023, in a separate tax fraud case, Shakira reached a deal with Spanish prosecutors to avoid a trial over charges that she did not pay Spanish income tax worth 14.5 million euros (then £12.6 million) between 2012 and 2014.

The singer accepted the charges and was forced to pay 7.3 million euros (then £6.4 million) in addition to the previously unpaid taxes and interest.

The Hips Don’t Lie singer was named in the 2017 “Paradise Papers” leaks that detailed the offshore tax arrangements of numerous high-profile individuals, including pop icons Madonna and U2’s Bono.

Spain’s tax authorities have over the past decade or so cracked down on football stars including Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for not paying their full due in taxes.

These players were found guilty of tax evasion but avoided prison time thanks to a provision that allows a judge to waive sentences under two years in length for first-time offenders.

Rescuers have located the bodies of four Italian divers deep inside an underwater cave in an atoll in the Maldives, four days after they were reported missing, Italy’s foreign ministry has said.

Searches had resumed on Monday after being suspended following the death of a local military diver during a perilous mission to try to reach them.

The government of the Indian Ocean island nation confirmed the bodies were spotted in the innermost part of the cave by three Finnish diving experts, supported by the Maldives police and the military.

“As was previously thought, the four bodies were found inside the cave, not only inside the cave but well inside the cave into the third segment of the cave, which is the largest part,” Ahmed Shaam, a Maldives government spokesman, said.

He said the four were found “pretty much together”.

“The plan is they will try and recover two bodies tomorrow and possibly the other two the following day,” Mr Shaam said in a voice clip sent to the media.

The Divers’ Alert Network Europe, which deployed the three Finnish divers, said on its website that they were technical and cave divers with international experience in search and recovery missions, including operations in “deep overhead environments, confined spaces, and high-risk scenarios”.

The team used advanced technical systems, including closed-circuit rebreathers, a system that recycles exhaled breathing gas and removes carbon dioxide through a chemical scrubber, allowing for “significantly longer dives”, the organisation said.

The body of a fifth Italian — a diving instructor — was found earlier outside the cave.

The five were exploring a cave at a depth of about 50 metres (160 feet) in Vaavu Atoll on Thursday, according to Italy’s foreign ministry.

The recreational diving limit in the Maldives is 30 metres (98 feet).

The three Finnish divers, experts in deep and cave diving, arrived in the Maldives on Sunday.

Maldives presidential spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef said earlier that the search was suspended after Mohamed Mahudhee, a member of the Maldivian national defence force, died of underwater decompression sickness after being transferred to a hospital in the capital on Saturday.

Rough weather had repeatedly hampered rescue efforts.

Initial teams had already dived to identify and mark the entrance to the cave system where the Italians disappeared.

The cause of the deaths remained under investigation.

The Metropolitan Police is investigating alleged hate crimes at both major protests in London as officers are still searching for seven suspects from the pro-Palestine Nakba Day rally.

About 60,000 people are estimated to have joined Tommy Robinson’s Unite the Kingdom march on Saturday, and between 15,000 and 20,000 attended the Nakba Day rally, the Met said.

A total of 43 arrests were made, 20 were linked to the Unite the Kingdom protest, while 12 were affiliated with the Nakba protest, the force added.

The remaining 11 arrests were not linked to either group, or their affiliation has not been confirmed, the Met said.

About 4,000 police officers were on duty on Saturday.

Four officers were assaulted on Saturday and six were subjected to hate crime offences, the force said in a post on X on Saturday evening.

There were arrests for 11 hate crime related offences. Of those arrested two were allegedly affiliated to the Nakba Day rally and nine to Unite the Kingdom, police said.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="188151" data-permalink="https://londonglossy.com/metropolitan-police-probing-alleged-hate-crimes-at-major-london-protests/img_1695-2/" data-orig-file="https://londonglossy.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_1695.jpeg" data-orig-size="640,480" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="London protests" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>Police say between 15,000 and 20,000 attended the Nakba Day rally</p>

They included offences motivated by race, religion, sexuality and disability.

A further seven hate crime offences remain under investigation with outstanding suspects. All are from the Nakba Day protest.

Three arrests were as a result of the use of live facial recognition, the Met added. All three were people wanted for failing to appear at court. None were affiliated to the protests taking place the same day.

Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, posted a video on X from the protest in which he said: “Keir Starmer, the country’s awake, your days are numbered.”

In another he claimed there were millions at the march.

When he spoke on stage Robinson urged the crowds to get involved in local politics.

Other speakers included former Apprentice candidate Katie Hopkins, television personality Ant Middleton, former actor Laurence Fox and former Conservative MP Andrew Bridgen.

Siobhan Whyte, the mother of Rhiannon Whyte, who was murdered by a Sudanese asylum seeker, told the Unite the Kingdom protest that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer “failed my daughter”.

Polish politician Dominik Tarczynski, who claimed to have been banned by Starmer from entering the UK before the rally, appeared on stage via videolink.

Organisers of the pro-Palestine rally estimated at least a quarter of a million people attended.

Labour MP Apsana Begum told protesters at the rally that the movement would not be divided by the “far right”.

MP Diane Abbott said they faced a “common enemy” in the “far right”.

She added: “They are viciously right-wing, viciously racist, they are anti-black, anti-Muslim, and viciously antisemitic.

“We have to come together… to fight the racists, to fight the fascists, to fight the antisemites.”

Your Party co-founder Zarah Sultana told the protesters that Andy Burnham was “not an alternative” to Starmer and “is another establishment politician cut from the same Zionist cloth”.

Former Labour leader and Your Party co-founder Jeremy Corbyn told supporters at the pro-Palestine rally in Pall Mall that Westminster needs a change in “policy” not “personalities”.

Prosecutors had been told to consider whether protest placards, banners and chants viewed on social media may amount to offences of stirring up hatred during the rallies.

The new guidance urges prosecutors to assess whether slogans, symbols or chants may influence audiences online if they are filmed and shared.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said the revised advice was designed to reflect “the changing international context” and follows separate guidance concerning the fast-tracking of hate crime prosecutions issued earlier this month.

The guidance tells prosecutors to take account of the wider context around protests, including heightened tensions linked to national or international events.

Recent criminal cases have resulted in people being charged after shouting “death to the IDF (Israel Defence Forces)” and “globalise the intifada”.

The British Government had also blocked 11 foreign nationals described by Starmer as “far-right agitators” from entering the UK ahead of the Unite the Kingdom rally.

Drones were going to be used to monitor both protest routes, while officers in Wembley would monitor CCTV feeds from the FA Cup final to identify supporters travelling towards demonstrations, Commander Clair Haynes said previously.

For the first time under official protest restrictions, organisers of the rallies will face prosecution as well as any speakers who break the law by using the events as a platform for extremism or hate speech.

Live facial recognition was going to be used for the first time in a protest policing operation, and cameras were set up in an area of Camden that was not on the route of the Unite the Kingdom march, but was expected to be used by a lot of people attending the event.
