London Jobs To Benefit From Boost To Arts Institutions

London jobs are set to benefit from the Government’s financial support to three of the country’s art institutions.

A new National Film Centre will be built on London’s South Bank and the Tate Modern as well as the British Museum will each receive funds to support their extensions.

According to BBC News, the Government will give £45m towards the new film centre. The centre will become the new home of the British Film Institute (BFI) and host popular events like the London Film Festival and premieres.

The capital’s Tate Modern which boasts with international modern art will undergo a £215m transformation.

The Government will support the Tate Modern with £50m and the British Museum with £22.5m.

Females Have The Advantage In Downturn

Female job seekers, including those looking for London jobs, are benefiting from current labour market demands, it has been claimed.

According to John Philpott, chief economist at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, there was a quarterly increase in part-time employment for women for the three months ending in August.

Mr Philpott suggested that this rise is due to a upturn in part-time employment and temporary jobs, which are often given to female workers. He commented: "Women are the main beneficiaries of a labour market where part-time work is rising while full-time jobs continue to be cut."

The expert went on to say that the CIPD predicts the rate of male unemployment will exceed ten per cent in 2010.

Courtney Love Down To Last £75

Grunge rocker Courtney Love has told friends she is down to her last £75 and set to be kicked on to the streets. The widow of the legendary Kurt Cobain, 45, said she could not even afford to feed her daughter Frances Bean, 17.

Love, who is living in New York's Mercer Hotel, texted a pal saying: "I'm f****d now dude. I have 120 bucks, my kid hasn't had a decent meal and I'm getting evicted."

The former Hole singer was last month banned from accessing the trust fund left for her daughter when husband Kurt Cobain killed himself in 1994.

She claims she has had more than £300 million stolen from her by fraudsters since 2003 and has even hired investigators to try to track it down.

Perhaps she should look for a new job?

High-end clothing shop Prada on Old Bond Street was sensationally robbed on Wednesday night.

The store - situated in the prestigious district of Mayfair, opposite Gucci and in the proximity of London clubs Funky Buddha, Mahiki and HeyJo - is the flagship premises in London for the Italian fashion label.

The robbery appeared to have been a simple smash and grab that left the glass from the front door of the boutique shattered and scattered across the street as cold winter weather gripped the October night.

Police officers at the scene of the crime appeared to be clueless although no doubt they will announce investigations are ongoing at some stage on Thursday.

London Underground Workers Threaten Strike Action

London Underground workers are threatening to go on strike for a pay rise, according to news reports today.

Staff have rejected an offer of a 1.5 per cent pay increase this year followed by an inflation plus 0.5 per cent rise in April 2010.

Transport for London (TfL) condemned the threat and said their pay offer was "fair and final".

The union held a 48-hour strike in June which severely affected services.

Christmas Postal Strike Over Jobs

The recent decision by postal workers to strike over jobs means that poeple are being advised to post their Christmas mail three weeks early.

A ballot of 120,000 Royal Mail workers voted overwhelmingly to walk out in a bitter row over jobs and pay.

Union leaders will meet next week to decide the timing of the strikes, which could start by the end of the month.

London Hotel Room Rates Crash By £10

Hotel room rates in London have crashed in the last year, with more price cuts likely over the coming months, report industry experts.

Number crunchers at PricewaterhouseCoopers have suggested that, since the beginning of 2009, average room rates have fallen by 8.1 per cent, or about £10 a room.

But even that big fall might be undercooking things, as a survey by Hotels.com has London hotel prices crashing by 12 per cent in just the first six months of 2009.

However, is is good news for people who want to stay over in London.

A history graduate who had built up over £20,000 of debts since leaving university has turned himself into a walking advertisement.

David Rowe, who said he had sent out hundreds of CVs and offered to work for free, could not find himself a job. After a bet with his father he decided to pace around London's Fleet Street area with a sandwich board emblazoned with: "Job wanted - history graduate - interview me".

His efforts have led to one offer of a job from a London recruitment firm.

Hundreds of Police Officers may lose their jobs as Scotland Yard hurries to save £20m, the Evening Standard has reported.

Plans have been announced for civilians to take the jobs of 400 uniformed custody officers, as part of a bid to save £67m in the next financial year. It is also rumoured that the Metropolitan Police force was considering cutting frontline jobs, as a last resort.

Senior officers are also drawing up plans to merge departments such as HR and finance across boroughs to make further savings.

Firms will be required to advertise jobs in the UK for a month before recruiting overseas, Home Secretary Alan Johnson said on Monday, in a move to ensure British workers are "first in line" for jobs.
