So, the 2026 Fifa World Cup is coming. Cue the flags on cars, the sudden expert opinions from people who cannot find the recycling bin, and enough jet fuel to cook the planet twice over.

A new report from digital marketing agency Brand Ambition has dropped a truth bomb that should make every climate conscious mum choke on her fairtrade tea. Brace yourselves: the 2026 tournament is shaping up to be the least sustainable major sporting event in history.

And before any football fanatics start shouting “but it is the world cup!”, let me break this down in terms even a sleep deprived parent of three can understand.

Your favourite player is basically an airline

Elite footballers will rack up over 100,000 miles of travel this season before the knockout stage even starts. That is the equivalent of flying around the earth more than four times. Lionel Messi, yes, the little magician himself, could clock 105,765 miles across club and international duty.

Let me put that in mum maths. That is like doing the school run from London to Sydney and back. Every week. For a year. While wearing boots.

And for what? So he can kick a ball into a net for 90 minutes while we all pretend the climate crisis is not happening?

Regional zones? Yeah, right

Fifa introduced three regional clusters called west, central and east to reduce travel. Sounds sensible, does it not? Except the distance between Vancouver and Los Angeles, both in the same zone, is over 1,300 miles. That is further than flying from London to Athens.

So much for keeping it local. My teenager walks further to the corner shop, but apparently professional footballers need private jets to move between neighbouring cities.

England and Scotland, you are not off the hook

Oh, the home nations are not innocent in this either. England’s group stage dash covers 1,740 miles, zigzagging between Dallas, Boston and New York. If they somehow make it to the final, and I will believe it when I see it, total travel hits 7,315 miles. That is like flying from London to Santiago, Chile. For a football tournament.

Scotland? They will clock 1,275 miles in the group stage alone, including a long haul hop down to Miami. Their total potential journey to the final is 6,300 miles.

And here is the kicker. Most of these players are already exhausted from domestic leagues and European club competitions. But sure, let us fly them across a continent for a month of sporting excellence.

The real cost? A planet on fire

This is not just about tired millionaires having a moan. The carbon footprint of all this private charter and first class flying is enough to make your eyes water. Take Ivan Toney from England and Jack Hendry from Scotland. Both are playing club football in Saudi Arabia. Their season long travel generates an estimated 8,000 kilograms of CO2 each.

For context, the average UK person’s annual carbon footprint is about 8 tonnes. These two are doing that in one season just from travel. And that is before we count the fans flying in.

What would a mum say?

I played football in a female Surrey League for 6 years so I know football. I love a good tournament as much as the next person. The drama, the last minute goals, the excuse to eat rubbish on the sofa. But when Fifa expands a world cup across an entire continent the size of North America, with 48 teams, 104 matches, and travel schedules that would make a long haul pilot weep, you have to ask this. Is it really worth it?

Our kids are growing up in a world of wildfires, floods, and weather events that are called “once in a century” but happen every other Tuesday. And we are flying footballers around like they are delivering urgent organs for transplant, not taking corners.

By all means, enjoy the matches. But maybe, just maybe, we can admit that this tournament is less a celebration of sport and more a monument to excess.

And if your partner suddenly becomes an eco warrior because you asked them to take the train instead of the car? Show them this article. Then ask them to explain why 100,000 miles of footballer travel is perfectly fine, but your reusable coffee cup is apparently “a bit much”.

Game, set and match.

Digital marketing today needs to be more present and more human to connect with the audience. When content is automated and impersonal online, brands struggle with engagement. Pippit’s AI-powered avatars are effective in bridging this communication gap. This article details how AI-generated characters with humanized personalities can boost marketing effectiveness in today’s world. Readers will discover steps to easily produce relatable video content. In content, the battle is being fought by modern brands on authenticity and emotional relevance. Digital communication channels are less ‘friction-y’ when human-centred visuals are used. It’s another way for brands to scale content while staying authentic.

Why Human Presence Matters in Digital Marketing

Digital marketing is made emotional with a human touch. Personal, naturally expressive content is content the audience trusts. The more human-like the communication, the more engagement will increase. The more brands can have consistent, relatable messaging across channels, the better. Emotionally-based campaign storytelling methods increase retention. Another upside of a powerful presence is that it will help clarify any complex marketing message. Initial interactions with the audience are more trustworthy when communication is human-like. By maintaining a consistent tone, brands can preserve their credibility across platforms. People like messages that are more spontaneous and less scripted. This will help you develop long-term online customer relationships.

How AI Characters Bring a Human Element to Marketing Content

With AI character technology, AI marketing can now imitate actual communication. Thus, brands can convey messages with a face-to-face realism. Visual Presenters use natural expressions to direct viewers through content. If presented in a friendly and engaging way, they will listen better. These characters can be used to enhance marketing experiences, making them more engaging and immersive. About facial expressions and gestures, these systems do a good job of mimicking them. Visual presence is an advantage for marketers in storytelling. The guided visual explanations improve the audience’s understanding. In this way, the mental burden in information processing is reduced. Emotional alignment is facilitated by human-like digital representation.

Social media updates help to keep audiences engaged on each platform.

When viewing is fast-paced, it’s better to use short sentences for comprehension. Visuals complement the narration, and the the message is reinforced when they are consistent with it. Keeping things simple is a great way to keep the audience’s attention on the points.

The Impact of Visual Presenters on Audience Engagement

Visual presenters have a strong impact on message retention among the audience. The longer that viewers are engaged with content, the more time they spend. Videos with a dynamic presentation flow hold attention longer. Human-like delivery systems help to enhance the effectiveness of communication. In competitive digital environments, brand differentiation is enhanced. Structured visual storytelling formats resonate well with viewers. The better known the visual identity, the more it is known via marketing channels. Human appearance Avatars bring down the communication distance.

Future Opportunities for Humanized Digital Marketing

In the future, marketing will be greatly influenced by advanced avatar realism. Personalized communication will improve the customer experience worldwide. Outreach in multiple languages will broaden reach in multiple markets. Scalable content systems will help expedite marketing production workflows. The experience of interacting with the digital environment will be immersive and will set a new standard in audience engagement. The avatar’s emotional expression will be improved using Artificial Intelligence. Personalized avatars will be used in brands’ marketing day-to-day. Cross-platform consistency will be achieved through automation tools. Digital storytelling will evolve into more immersive experiences.

I sat through The Devil Wears Prada 2 with a glass of something robust and a heart full of hope. Two hours later, the glass was empty and the hope was dead. This film is a disaster. A beautifully dressed, star-studded, expensive looking disaster.

And nobody is saying it out loud. Because the first one was fine. It was original enough, fun enough, quotable enough. But this sequel? It has officially killed the franchise. Buried it in a custom Prada coffin and thrown a sale rack on top.

A comedy that forgot to be funny

What is this film supposed to be? A comedy? I did not laugh once. I did not even smile. Not a single smirk escaped my face. The script lands with the grace of a dropped cappuccino. Even Stanley Tucci, the man who can make reading a phone book delightful, is pushed to the sidelines like last season’s ankle boots.

So is it a fashion film? Well, if such a genre exists, then yes. But it does not entertain. It merely exists. The cameras lovingly caress the clothes, the bags, the Milanese palazzos. But a beautiful wrapper does not make a good chocolate. And this chocolate is stale.

No romance, no chemistry, no point

There is zero romance in this film. Not even by accident. Andy Sachs, now twenty years older and supposedly wiser, is saddled with a pointless Australian boyfriend named Peter. He works in construction. He is divorced. He likes Andy. That is literally all we know about him. Patrick Brammall does what he can, but the role is so thinly written you could read a magazine through it.

Why, in 2026, are we still terrified of a woman who is proudly single and child?free? What would have been so wrong with letting Andy stand on her own two feet, without a man attached to her like a boring handbag? This film wants to be a career film with a capital C. Apparently that is a new genre now. Let me yawn while I am writing this. Entertainment business, seriously? You create a “career movie”? It is as thrilling as watching someone format a spreadsheet.

Your purpose in life can be creativity, good friends, and holding onto your job by your fingernails. With no boyfriend. This film refuses to learn that lesson.

The cameos are a cry for help

Lady Gaga, Donatella Versace, Jon Batiste, they all show up. When a film throws this many cameos at you, it is usually a sign that the script is on life support. To be fair, the best part of the entire movie is the fashion show in Milan, set to a Lady Gaga performance. Because Gaga has raw talent. Watching her perform is always a pleasure. The rest of the film? Not so much.

Even the gorgeous scenes filmed at the Brera Academy in Milan could not save this. Beautiful architecture, terrible storytelling.

Copycat of the original, but worse

The plot is recycled. Andy gets laid off from a serious newspaper (by a Jeff Bezos type) and crawls back to Runway magazine. Miranda Priestly is still terrifying, but now she has to pretend to care about body positivity and pronouns. She flies coach. The horror.

Meanwhile, Emily Blunt returns as Emily, now head of Dior, and she is fine. She gets a few good lines. But nobody emerges from this film looking good. Not Meryl, not Anne, not Stanley. Everyone is just going through the motions. The acting is average. The directing is average. The whole thing is aggressively mediocre.

And yet, you all paid to see it

Here is the part that makes me furious and impressed at the same time. This absolute stinker has grossed over $436 million worldwide on a $100 million budget. It is the fifth highest?grossing film of 2026. In two weekends. Two!

That is insane. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug. We all lined up because we wanted to see Miranda Priestly again. We wanted the comfort of that familiar “that’s all” and the icy stare. And Hollywood knows exactly what it is doing. I am not even mad about it. I am part of the problem. I threw my money at the screen too. Star power is undefeated, even when the movie is not good.

The verdict

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is one of the worst films of the past ten years. It is a bad sequel further tainted by a pointless man. It recycles old plots, adds nothing new, and commits the ultimate sin: it is boring.

The first film was a mid-00s romcom with heart and bite. This sequel has neither. It is a career film that forgets that careers are supposed to be interesting. It is a fashion film that forgets that fashion is supposed to be fun. And it is a comedy that forgot to be funny.

Do not see it. Unless you want to confirm your suspicion that some sequels should never be made. And if you do see it, bring a strong drink. You will need it.

As people age, regular eye examinations become increasingly important. Good vision plays a vital role in maintaining independence, supporting mental wellbeing, and helping older adults remain engaged with the world around them. However, accessing eye care can be challenging for many residents living in care homes.

Mobile eye care services provide a practical solution by bringing professional optical care directly to residents. These services help ensure that older adults receive the eye examinations and support they need without the stress and inconvenience of travelling to an external appointment.

Why eye health matters in later life

Many age-related eye conditions develop gradually and may not present obvious symptoms during their early stages. Conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy can significantly affect vision if left untreated.

Routine eye examinations allow optometrists to identify potential issues early and recommend appropriate treatment. Early diagnosis often improves outcomes and helps preserve vision for longer.

Good eyesight can also contribute to:

Reduced risk of falls and accidents

Greater confidence when moving around

Improved communication and social interaction

Better quality of life and independence

Enhanced mental wellbeing

The challenges of traditional eye appointments

Many care home residents have limited mobility or health conditions that make travelling difficult. Organising transport, coordinating staff support, and managing medical needs can turn a simple eye appointment into a complex process.

As a result, some residents may miss routine examinations or delay seeking help for vision problems. Unfortunately, untreated vision issues can affect everyday activities and overall wellbeing.

This is why many care providers are turning to services such as a Care Home Eye Test that can be delivered directly within the care home environment.

Advantages of On-Site Eye Testing

Greater Convenience

Residents can receive professional eye care without leaving their familiar surroundings. This eliminates the need for transport arrangements and reduces disruption to daily routines.

Personalised Support

Mobile optometrists are experienced in working with elderly patients and can adapt examinations to suit individual needs. This creates a more comfortable and positive experience.

Better Accessibility

Residents who may otherwise struggle to attend appointments can still access comprehensive eye care services and ongoing support.

Faster Identification of Vision Problems

Regular on-site assessments help identify changes in vision sooner, allowing treatment or corrective measures to be implemented promptly.

Supporting Safety and Independence

Vision plays a key role in maintaining independence. Even small improvements in eyesight can have a meaningful impact on daily life.

Residents with properly corrected vision may find it easier to:

Read books and newspapers

Watch television comfortably

Recognise family members and friends

Participate in activities and hobbies

Navigate their surroundings safely

By addressing vision concerns early, care homes can help residents maintain confidence and remain active participants in community life.

The Value for Families and Care Providers

Family members want reassurance that their loved ones are receiving appropriate healthcare. Regular eye examinations help provide that confidence while ensuring residents receive the support they need.

Care staff also benefit when residents have clear vision, as communication and daily interactions often become easier. Better eyesight can contribute to greater engagement, improved mood, and enhanced quality of life.

FAQ

How often should care home residents have an eye examination?

Most adults should have an eye test every two years. However, some individuals may require more frequent examinations depending on their age, medical history, or existing eye conditions.

What eye conditions can be detected during an eye test?

An eye examination can help identify cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and other vision-related conditions.

Can residents with dementia receive an eye test?

Yes. Mobile optometrists are trained to work with individuals living with dementia and can adapt their approach to ensure a comfortable experience.

Are mobile eye tests comprehensive?

Yes. Professional mobile eye care providers use specialist equipment that enables them to carry out thorough examinations comparable to those performed in traditional optical practices.

What happens if a resident needs new glasses?

Following the examination, suitable frames and lenses can be selected, and glasses can often be supplied directly to the resident through the service provider.

Access to regular eye care is essential for maintaining health, safety, and independence in later life. Mobile eye care services remove many of the barriers associated with traditional appointments and make it easier for care home residents to receive professional support.

By investing in routine eye examinations and timely treatment, care homes can help residents enjoy better vision, greater confidence, and an improved quality of life.

Two diamonds of identical carat weight and color can return very different amounts of light to the eye. The reason is the cut, not the size, and the question of which cut produces the most fire and brilliance has a settled answer. The round brilliant leads, and no other shape matches it. A well-cut round returns up to 93% of the light that enters it and has 58 facets arranged to send that light straight back at the viewer. The rest of the story is about why, and about how much the quality of the cutting matters once the shape is chosen.

Brilliance, fire, and scintillation

Three separate effects get grouped under the word sparkle, and they are worth keeping apart. Brilliance is the white light sent back to the eye, the plain brightness that makes a stone look bright in a room. Fire is the breakup of white light into colored flashes, the reds, blues, and greens that appear when the stone tilts. Scintillation is the pattern of light and dark that flickers as the diamond or the viewer moves.

A strong diamond shows all three in balance. A stone heavy on brilliance but short on fire looks bright and a little flat. One heavy on fire but short on brilliance throws color without a steady glow. The cut is what holds the three in proportion, which is why two stones with the same grades on paper can perform so differently in the hand.

The round brilliant’s light advantage

The round brilliant earns its name from the way its 58 facets gather and redirect light. The facets are cut as kites and triangles set at angles that bounce light off the internal walls and back up through the top of the stone. When the proportions are right, almost none of the light passes through the bottom and out of sight.

That geometry is the product of deliberate optical work. The modern proportions were calculated in the early 20th century to maximize the light returned to the eye, and the shape has held its lead because the math behind it has not been improved on. A round brilliant is the benchmark every other shape is measured against for both fire and brilliance. A diamond can do any of this because of its high refractive index, near 2.42, which bends light sharply and slows it enough to break into color. Few natural materials bend light that hard, which is why a diamond fires where cut glass only glints.

The Marquise and its long flash

The marquise is a brilliant-style cut, so it shares the faceting that produces fire rather than the parallel planes of a step cut. Its elongated outline spreads that fire across a longer surface, which is part of why a Marquise cut engagement ring can look lively even though it returns less light than a round of the same weight.

The shape has one optical cost worth knowing. A poorly proportioned marquise shows a bowtie, a dark band across the center where light leaks out instead of returning to the eye. A well-cut marquise keeps that shadow small through correct depth and tight symmetry, which is the main thing to check when comparing two of them.

Cut quality and proportion

Shape sets the ceiling, but cut quality decides how close a stone gets to it. The grade called cut on a diamond report measures proportion, symmetry, and polish, and it drives a stone’s sparkling brilliance more than any of the other three Cs. A round brilliant with a poor cut grade can look duller than a well-cut oval, even though the round has the better shape on paper. Grading labs rate cut from Excellent or Ideal down to Poor, and they reserve a full cut grade for the round brilliant, because its ideal angles are defined precisely. Other shapes receive polish and symmetry grades, but no single cut grade, which leaves more of the judgment with the buyer.

The numbers that matter most are the crown angle and the pavilion angle, the slopes of the top and bottom of the stone. When those two angles are tuned to each other, light enters, bounces off the rear facets, and returns through the crown as both brightness and color. When they are off, the stone leaks light, no matter how good the rough material was.

Sources of light leakage

A diamond loses light in two main ways, and both come down to depth. Light stays inside the stone or leaks out depending on the facet angles and on the refractive index of the material. A pavilion cut too deep sends light out through the side or the bottom before it can bounce back, which leaves a dark center. A pavilion cut too shallow creates a fish-eye, a pale ring visible through the top.

The crown has its own failure. A crown cut too shallow reduces fire, because the shallow angle does less to bend white light into color on the way out. Cutters accept a small loss of weight to hold these angles, since a heavier stone that leaks light is worth less than a lighter one that performs. This is the trade buyers rarely see on a grading report and feel only when they compare two stones side by side.

Step cuts and lower fire

Step cuts are at the other end of the range. Emerald and Asscher shapes use long, parallel facets arranged like steps toward the center, and that pattern produces broad flashes of light rather than the fine, scattered sparkle of a brilliant cut. They show less fire by design, since the open facets do less to drive the dispersion of white light into color.

The trade is intentional. A step cut rewards a clean stone, since the open facets hide nothing, so the value moves toward clarity and away from raw sparkle. A buyer who wants maximum fire should not start with an emerald, and a buyer who wants a calm, transparent look should not expect it to flash like a round.

Fire and brilliance in plain terms

Fire is white light split into color, brilliance is white light sent straight back as brightness, and both follow from the science of light inside a dense, well-cut stone. The round brilliant produces more of both than any other shape because its facets and angles were designed for exactly that. The marquise and other brilliant-style shapes follow it, step cuts trail further back, and within any shape, the cut grade is what turns a stone’s potential into the light a person actually sees. The cut, more than the carat or the color, decides how much fire and brilliance a finished stone shows.

In a fast-paced area like South West London, finding time for routine car maintenance can be difficult. Busy workdays, traffic congestion, and packed schedules often leave little room for visiting a traditional car wash. As a result, more drivers are turning to mobile valeting services that offer professional cleaning directly at their chosen location.

A reliable South West London Mobile Car Wash service provides a practical and time-saving solution for maintaining a clean, polished vehicle without the inconvenience of travelling to a garage or waiting in queues.

The Growing Demand for Mobile Car Washing

Modern lifestyles have changed the way people manage everyday tasks, and vehicle cleaning is no exception. Convenience has become a major priority for London drivers, especially those balancing work, commuting, and family responsibilities.

Mobile car wash services allow customers to:

Book appointments online

Choose convenient locations

Continue their day while their vehicle is cleaned

Receive professional results without leaving home or work

This flexibility is one of the key reasons mobile valeting continues to grow in popularity.

Professional Cleaning That Protects Your Car

Keeping a vehicle clean is not only about appearance. Regular maintenance helps protect the car from long-term wear caused by pollution, dirt, and road debris.

Exterior Cleaning Benefits

South West London roads expose vehicles to a range of contaminants that can damage paintwork over time. Professional cleaning helps remove:

Road grime

Bird droppings

Tree sap

Brake dust

Pollution residue

Many services also include waxing and paint protection treatments to preserve the vehicle’s finish.

Interior Cleaning Advantages

A professionally cleaned interior improves comfort and hygiene while helping maintain the car’s value. Interior valeting often includes:

Vacuuming carpets and seats

Dashboard polishing

Upholstery cleaning

Leather conditioning

Odour removal

This creates a cleaner and more pleasant driving experience.

A Convenient Option for Busy Lifestyles

Mobile car washing is especially popular among people with demanding schedules.

Professionals

Office workers can schedule vehicle cleaning during working hours, avoiding the need to spend evenings or weekends at a car wash.

Families

Parents managing busy routines benefit from having their car cleaned at home without disrupting daily activities.

Businesses and Fleets

Companies operating multiple vehicles can use mobile valeting services to maintain a professional appearance across their fleet.

Eco-Friendly Car Washing Methods

Many mobile valeting providers now use environmentally conscious cleaning methods. This helps reduce water waste while still delivering high-quality results.

Eco-friendly practices may include:

Steam cleaning

Biodegradable cleaning products

Water-saving techniques

Reduced chemical use

These approaches appeal to environmentally aware customers looking for more sustainable vehicle care options.

Choosing the Right Mobile Car Wash Service

Not all mobile valeting companies offer the same level of service. Selecting a reputable provider ensures better results and a more reliable experience.

When comparing services, consider:

Customer reviews

Experience and professionalism

Range of services available

Flexible scheduling

Transparent pricing

A trusted provider should also use safe cleaning techniques suitable for all vehicle types.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a mobile car wash take?

Most standard mobile valeting appointments take between one and three hours depending on the condition and size of the vehicle.

Do mobile car wash services bring their own equipment?

Yes. Professional mobile valeters typically arrive with all necessary cleaning equipment, water, and products.

Can I book a mobile car wash while at work?

Yes. Many customers choose to have their vehicle cleaned during office hours for maximum convenience.

Are mobile car washes safe for luxury vehicles?

Professional valeting services are designed to safely clean luxury, sports, and electric vehicles using specialist products and techniques.

How often should I professionally clean my car?

A professional clean every four to six weeks is generally recommended to maintain both appearance and protection.

Mobile car washing has become an increasingly popular choice for drivers across South West London. By combining convenience, professional-quality cleaning, and flexible scheduling, these services provide an efficient solution for busy lifestyles. Whether you want to protect your vehicle’s value, improve its appearance, or simply save time, mobile valeting offers a practical and reliable way to keep your car in excellent condition.

Carpets are the unsung heroes of a family home. They soften the landing for tumbling toddlers, muffle the sound of footsteps at bedtime and tie a room together in a way that no hard floor quite can. But they also absorb everything: crumbs, spills, pet hair, muddy footprints and the kind of mysterious stains that appear overnight without any obvious explanation. Keeping them clean is a constant battle and dragging a carpet to the dry cleaner or hiring a steam cleaning machine every time is simply not realistic for most households. That’s where a dry carpet cleaner steps in.

What is a dry carpet cleaner and how does it work?

A dry carpet cleaner is a cleaning product, usually in powder or foam form, that removes dirt, odours and grime from carpet fibres without soaking the carpet with water. The product is applied to the carpet, works its way into the fibres, absorbs the dirt and is then vacuumed up, taking the grime with it.

Powder vs Foam Dry Cleaners

Powder-based dry cleaners are the most common format. You sprinkle the powder evenly across the carpet, work it gently into the fibres with a brush, leave it for a set amount of time (usually between 15 minutes and a couple of hours), then vacuum thoroughly. Simple, effective and with no waiting time for the carpet to dry.

Foam dry cleaners are better suited to more targeted cleaning. The foam is applied and massaged into the fibres, allowed to dry, and then vacuumed away. They work well on specific stains or areas of heavy traffic.

When should you use a dry carpet cleaner?

Regular maintenance between deep cleans

Think of dry carpet cleaning as the equivalent of tidying up between proper cleans. Used once or twice a month, it keeps surface dirt, household odours and everyday grime from building up into something much harder to tackle.

Delicate or Antique Carpets

Woollen rugs, hand-knotted carpets and antique pieces should generally not be exposed to large amounts of water. A dry cleaner is often the only safe option for maintaining these carpets at home.

Quick Results When You Need Them

Dry carpet cleaners work quickly, no fuss, no mess, no drying time. They’re a practical lifesaver for busy households with unexpected guests.

Hagerty: Trusted by Families and Professionals Since 1919

When it comes to home care products that genuinely do what they promise, Hagerty is a name worth knowing. Founded in the United States in 1919, the brand has spent over a century developing specialist cleaning products for textiles, precious metals and delicate surfaces. Today, Hagerty products are used by discerning households and professionals alike from hotels and restaurants to jewellers and restoration specialist in countries around the world.

What sets Hagerty apart is a commitment to chemistry-first thinking. Every product is developed around the specific cleaning challenge it’s designed to solve, without compromising the material being cleaned.

Hagerty Dry Shampoo – The dry carpet cleaner built for family life

Hagerty’s dry carpet cleaner is a powder-based product developed specifically for carpets, fitted carpets and washable upholstery. Its formulation absorbs dirt, grease and unpleasant odours deep within the fibres and vacuums away cleanly, leaving no sticky residue or strong chemical scent.

How to use a dry carpet cleaner properly

Step 1 – Vacuum First

Before applying any dry cleaner, vacuum the carpet thoroughly. This removes loose dirt and allows the cleaning product to reach the deeper grime within the fibres.

Step 2 – Apply Evenly

Sprinkle the powder or apply the foam evenly across the area you want to treat. Don’t over-apply: a thin, even layer is more effective.

Step 3 – Work It In

Use a soft brush or your fingertips to gently work the product into the carpet fibres with circular motions.

Step 4 – Leave It to Work

Allow the product to sit for at least 15 to 30 minutes. For particularly stubborn odours or ingrained dirt, leaving it for longer gives better results.

Step 5 – Vacuum thoroughly

Vacuum the carpet carefully, working in several directions to ensure all the powder or dried foam is fully removed.

A few extra tips for carpet care

Treat spills immediately. The sooner you act on a fresh spill, the easier it is to remove.

Rotate furniture occasionally to prevent permanent flattening of carpet fibres.

Use a doormat at every entrance to reduce the amount of dirt that makes it onto your carpets.

Vacuum regularly: dry cleaning is not a substitute for regular vacuuming.

Dry carpet cleaning won’t replace a professional deep clean but for regular home maintenance, it’s one of the most practical and effective tools available to busy families. The key is choosing a product that’s been properly formulated for the job, like those from Hagerty, and using it consistently as part of your home care routine.

In 28 years of living in London and dragging myself to countless theatre shows, I had never seen War Horse. I read the book by Michael Morpurgo its my son Diego when he was at primary school. We did not love it. I watched the film. I was not a fan. So when the National Theatre invited me to the opening night of its return to the Olivier stage, I went with mild curiosity rather than burning excitement. Well. I was an idiot. What I saw on that stage was not magic. It was engineering. Pure, brilliant, painstaking engineering. And it left me a weepy, converted mess.

The engineering that will blow your mind

Let me start with the horses. Because they are the stars, and they are not real. Each horse is built from cane, leather, and metal. They are life sized. Each one is operated by three puppeteers who stand in full view. You can see their arms moving, their hands twisting, their bodies leaning into the gallop. You know exactly how the trick works. There is no hidden mechanism. No invisibility cloak.

And yet, within about ninety seconds, your brain simply gives up. The puppeteers fade away. The creatures take over. Joey, the main horse, breathes. I swear I saw his ribs expand. He flicks an ear toward a voice. He swishes his tail. He nuzzles the other horses. He lowers his head to graze. He gallops across the stage with such weight and momentum that you feel the thud of his hooves in your chest. Yet he seems floating across the stage. When he gets tangled in barbed wire in no man’s land, the entire audience held its breath. That is the power of good engineering.

The detail is extraordinary. The way the horses’ legs fold and extend mimics real equine anatomy. The way their heads turn and their eyes (simple painted eyes) somehow convey fear, curiosity, exhaustion. I have no idea how the Handspring Puppet Company achieved this, but I suspect they sold their souls to a very talented carpenter. Or perhaps they just spent twenty years obsessing over horse joints. Either way, I am grateful.

There is also Topthorn, the powerful black stallion who becomes Joey’s companion. Their relationship is wordless but utterly convincing. You see them groom each other, lean on each other in times of stress, and when Topthorn eventually collapses from exhaustion, the grief is real. I saw grown men wiping their eyes. I was one of them.

The goose. Oh, the goose.

And then there is the goose. A small puppet goose that spends the first half of the show trying to get into the farmhouse door. It is operated by one puppeteer (I think) who gives it the personality of a grumpy, determined little menace. The goose flaps its wings, pecks at the door, and gets shooed away repeatedly. It is cheeky, relentless, and brilliantly funny. The audience chuckled every time it appeared.

At the curtain call, the goose got a standing ovation. Not a polite clap. A real, cheering, foot?stamping ovation. The cast took their bows, and then they brought the goose back for a second bow. The audience went wild again. I have the video on my Instagram. Go and see it for yourself. A puppet goose, people. That is when you know the puppetry team has done something special.

The story (still heartbreaking, still beautiful)

For those who have been living under a rock, War Horse follows Albert and his beloved horse Joey. They grow up together on a Devon farm. Albert trains Joey to work the land, and they develop a bond so strong that Albert has a special hand whistle that only Joey responds to. The first ten minutes of the play are pastoral charm. The geese, the starlings (projected as a murmuration across the stage), the idyllic English countryside. It is lovely.

Then the First World War breaks out. Albert’s father, a struggling farmer with a drink problem, sells Joey to the cavalry. Albert is devastated. He is too young to enlist, but he refuses to forget his horse. He lies about his age, joins the army, and sets off to find Joey in the trenches of France.

It’s a story about love, loss, and the innocent creatures who get dragged into human madness. It is also about the men who die alongside the horses. The play does not shy away from the brutality. There are scenes of cavalry charges that end in bloody chaos. Soldiers get shell-shocked. Bodies lie strewn across the stage. It is intense, and it is appropriate for ages 10 and up.

The performances that hold it together

Tom Sturgess plays Albert, and he is superb. He starts as a naive, gentle teenager and grows into a determined, haunted young man. His love for Joey is palpable, and his single minded quest to find him drives the entire second half.

Stephen Beckett plays Albert’s father, a man torn between love for his son and his own weaknesses. Jo Castleton plays the mother, who quietly holds the family together. They are both excellent.

But the supporting cast also shines. Manuel Klein plays a German cavalry captain, Friedrich, who is drawn with such decency that you cannot hate him. He saves a French girl (Anita Adam Gabay’s Emilie) and later helps free Joey from the wire. It is a quiet reminder that there are no real enemies here, just frightened people on opposite sides of the same hell.

Sally Swanson plays a folksinger who wanders through the action, singing mournful ballads and playing the accordion. Her voice is like honey and heartbreak. She carries the emotional weight of the show without ever becoming schmaltzy.

The design that does more with less

The Olivier stage is bare. There are no elaborate sets. Instead, the design by Rae Smith uses a torn strip of sketchbook paper suspended above the action. Onto it, 59 Studio projects charcoal animations: clouds, dates, birds, the slow scrawl of a frontline map. It is simple, evocative, and beautiful. A few strokes of light, and you are in a Devon meadow. A cold sidelight, and you are in a frozen French field. A stutter of white, and the air itself seems to detonate.

This is theatre at its most resourceful. No walls, no furniture, no clutter. Just the actors, the puppets, and the audience’s imagination. And it works perfectly.

The sound design by Christopher Shutt is also worth mentioning. The gunfire stitches across the room. You flinch. You duck. That is how effective it is.

The music that will stay with you

Adrian Sutton’s score is lush and cinematic. It swells when it needs to, but it also knows when to be quiet. There are live folk songs performed by Sally Swanson and John Tams (who appears as a singer on stage). The songs feel ancient and timeless. One of them, “Only Remembered”, had me tearing up before the interval. The lyrics go something like: “We’re only remembered for what we’ve done.” It lands like a punch.

Better than the book and the film

I said it before and I will say it again. This play is better than the book and the film. The book is fine but it is a children’s novel. The film is okay but the stage production is something else entirely. The live music, the visible puppeteers, the bare stage, the collective gasp of a thousand people holding their breath. You cannot replicate that on a screen.

Queen Elizabeth II reportedly saw this play multiple times. It was her favourite. The late Queen knew a thing or two about quality. And about horses.

Practical details for London Mums

If you are thinking of taking the family, here is what you need to know.

Age recommendation: 10 and over. There are loud gunshots, flashing lights, haze, strobe effects, and scenes of soldiers dying. But for teenagers studying WWI, it is unmissable. I saw many children around 12 who were completely absorbed. One boy near me was crying openly during the barbed wire scene. His mother was crying too. It was fine.

Running time: 2 hours 45 minutes including one interval. Bring a cushion if your back is fussy. The Olivier seats are not the most generous.

Ticket prices: Start at £30. That is a bargain for this quality. Premium seats are more, but honestly, the view from the upper circle is still excellent.

Where: Olivier Theatre at the National Theatre, South Bank, London, SE1 9PX. Easy to reach by tube (Waterloo or Embankment) or bus.

When: Until 30 July 2026. It is selling fast. Do not leave it too late.

Book tickets: nationaltheatre.org.uk .

The verdict

I went in mildly curious. I came out a convert. I will go again. Possibly twice.

War Horse is not magic. It is better than magic. It is skilled people making you believe something that is not there. That is the essence of theatre. That is why we still gather in dark rooms to watch strangers pretend to be other people. When it works, it works better than any film or television show. This works. Go see it. Bring tissues. You will cry. I certainly did. And for goodness’ sake, stay for the curtain call and give the goose a cheer. It deserves it.

Rating: five stars.

War Horse runs at the National Theatre’s Olivier stage until 30 July 2026. Recommended for ages 10 and up. Book at nationaltheatre.org.uk. And go watch my Instagram video of the goose taking its second bow. You are welcome.

On Monday 1st of June London Mums Magazine sent a group of teenagers to review the Masters of The Universe below is what they thought of it:

Masters of the Universe is a film that balances adventure, action, and comedy in a way that makes it accessible to a wide audience. Based on the classic franchise He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, which gained popularity through the 1980s animated series, the movie brings the world of Eternia to the big screen with plenty of energy and personality.

The first thing that stands out is the visual presentation. The film is packed with vibrant colours, impressive lighting, and imaginative fantasy settings that feel both grand and engaging. The costumes deserve particular praise, as they are both striking and detailed, helping to bring the film’s characters and fantasy world to life. Combined with the impressive set design, every location feels immersive and full of personality. Even viewers who are not typically drawn to fantasy stories may find themselves captivated by the creativity on display.

The film’s soundtrack is highly effective in drawing the audience into the story. The music builds anticipation during action sequences, heightens emotional scenes, and helps create the grand, adventurous tone that defines the film. Combined with the striking visuals, the music makes the world feel larger and more immersive.

The characters also play a significant role in the film’s success. Adam/He-Man is portrayed as a charismatic and likeable hero who feels surprisingly ordinary and relatable, making it easy for audiences to support him throughout the story. Meanwhile, Skeletor brings plenty of personality to the screen, providing tension, comedy and some of the film’s most entertaining moments. The interactions between the characters help create an engaging dynamic that keeps viewers invested in the adventure.

However, the film’s greatest strength is undoubtedly its humour. The witty dialogue and well-timed jokes were a constant highlight throughout the screening. Rather than feeling forced, the comedy comes naturally from the characters and situations, giving the film a light-hearted charm. Several moments genuinely earned laughs from the audience, and the humour helps keep the story entertaining from beginning to end.

The verdict

Overall, Masters of the Universe is a visually striking and highly enjoyable adventure. While longtime fans of the franchise will likely appreciate the sense of nostalgia that comes from seeing these iconic characters brought to life, the film is also welcoming to newcomers thanks to its engaging visuals, strong soundtrack, and, most importantly, its sharp and memorable sense of humour.

We gave it a 6/10.

You are sitting in a beautiful theatre. A comedian is making you laugh so hard you forget you have a child. And that child is not sitting next to you asking for a snack every thirty seconds. They are in a separate room, supervised by professionals, building things out of LEGO DUPLO. Sounds like a dream? It is happening. And it is free.

On Sunday 14th June, the LEGO Group and Peanut (the app that helps mums find friends) are bringing <a href="https://www.peanut-app.io/little-wins-big-laughs<https://www.peanut-app.io/little-wins-big-laughs" type="link" id="https://www.peanut-app.io/little-wins-big-laughs<https://www.peanut-app.io/little-wins-big-laughs" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Little Wins, Big Laughs to Manchester. A one-off comedy event for parents of children aged 1 to 5. And honestly, the concept is genius.

What is actually happening?

The event takes place at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester. Doors open at 2.30pm, and the fun runs from 3pm to 5pm.

Here is the deal. The grown ups get an adult only comedy show. Headlining is the brilliant Sara Pascoe, comedian, author, broadcaster and mum of two. She will be joined by Hannah East and Matt Coyne (you may know him as Man vs Baby). The host is comedy doctor Michael Akadiri. So yes, proper comedians. Proper laughs.

Meanwhile, your little ones aged 1 to 5 are taken to bespoke LEGO DUPLO and LEGO Preschool playrooms. These are not just any playrooms. They are designed around developmental milestones. There are bricks, guided play, and activities that help with fine motor skills, hand eye coordination, and confidence. And here is the best part: the playrooms are staffed by accredited childcare professionals. So you can actually relax.

There are two rooms. One for children aged 1 to 3, and another for ages 4 to 5. The little ones will build racing adventures, create wildlife worlds, and experience their own playful firsts. All while you are watching a comedy show without someone tugging your sleeve

Why this matters to every tired parent

Parenting a toddler is relentless. You love them. You would die for them. But sometimes you just need forty five minutes of laughing at something that is not a cartoon giraffe.

This event understands that. It gives you a proper break. A real laugh. And your child gets a brilliant play session with brand new LEGO sets. It is a win win.

And did I mention it is free? Yes, completely free. Tickets are limited though, so you need to act fast.

How to get tickets

Tickets become available on 1st June. To register your interest, you need to sign up to Peanut, the community app for mums. It is free to download on Apple and Google Play stores. Once you are on the app, you can register for the event through the link provided.

Do not delay. These tickets will disappear quicker than a biscuit at a toddler group.

Practical details you actually need

Event: Little Wins, Big Laughs – a LEGO DUPLO comedy event
Date: Sunday 14th June 2026
Time: Doors at 2.30pm, event runs 3pm to 5pm
Location: Royal Exchange Theatre, St Ann’s Square, Manchester, M2 7DH
Age range: Children aged 1 to 5
Cost: Free (but tickets are limited)
What is included: Adult comedy show, supervised LEGO DUPLO playrooms for your child, and a rare chance to laugh without interruption.

Important note: The comedy show is for adults only. Your child must be supervised in the playrooms by the professionals provided. You cannot keep them on your lap. That is the whole point. Embrace it.

I wish this event was happening in London too. But Manchester, you lucky lot, you get the fun this time. If you live anywhere near the north, I strongly recommend you grab a ticket. Sara Pascoe is brilliant. LEGO DUPLO is always a hit. And a free afternoon of comedy while your toddler plays happily nearby? That is not just a little win. That is a massive win.

Go on. Register. Laugh. Build. Enjoy!

For <a href="https://www.peanut-app.io/little-wins-big-laughs<https://www.peanut-app.io/little-wins-big-laughs" type="link" id="https://www.peanut-app.io/little-wins-big-laughs<https://www.peanut-app.io/little-wins-big-laughs" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ticket registration, download the <a href="https://www.peanut-app.io/little-wins-big-laughs<https://www.peanut-app.io/little-wins-big-laughs" type="link" id="https://www.peanut-app.io/little-wins-big-laughs<https://www.peanut-app.io/little-wins-big-laughs" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Peanut app and search for Little Wins, Big Laughs.
