As a parent, sleep can make or break your day. A well-rested baby tends to be calmer, a toddler is often better equipped to handle emotions, and a teenager is more likely to focus at school and maintain a healthier routine. While bedtime habits play an important role, the sleep environment has a surprisingly big impact on how easily children drift off and stay asleep.

From controlling light levels to reducing distractions, small changes around the home can help children of all ages enjoy more restful nights. Here’s how to create a sleep-friendly space that grows with your child from infancy through the teenage years.

Start With Light Control

One of the biggest obstacles to quality sleep is unwanted light. Streetlights, early sunrises, and even passing car headlights can interrupt sleep patterns and make it harder for children to settle.

Creating a darker bedroom can help signal to the brain that it’s time to rest. This is particularly useful during the summer months when daylight can linger well into the evening and return early in the morning.

Parents looking to improve light control often focus on blackout solutions. Well-fitted curtains, layered window treatments, and practical accessories can all help minimise outside light. If you want to update your children’s bedrooms, options available at https://www.terrysfabrics.co.uk/collections/curtains-and-accessories can help create a darker, more comfortable sleeping environment while complementing the room’s décor.

The goal isn’t to create a cave-like atmosphere throughout the day, but rather to make it easy to darken the room at bedtime.

Create a Comfortable Sleep Temperature

A room that’s too hot or too cold can affect sleep quality regardless of age. Babies, in particular, can struggle to settle when temperatures fluctuate significantly during the night.

Rather than relying on heavy bedding, focus on maintaining a comfortable room temperature and using age-appropriate sleepwear. During warmer months, good airflow can make a noticeable difference. In colder seasons, layered bedding allows children to regulate their comfort more effectively.

Curtains can also contribute to temperature control. Thicker fabrics may help reduce heat loss during winter, while appropriate window coverings can limit excessive heat from direct sunlight during the day.

Reduce Noise and Distractions

Noise can affect children differently depending on their age. Babies may wake from sudden sounds, while teenagers often struggle to disconnect from digital distractions before bed.

For younger children, white noise machines or soft background sounds can help mask household noise. Carpets, rugs, and fabric furnishings may also soften echoes and reduce sound travel within the home.

Toddlers benefit from a predictable and calm bedroom environment. Keeping noisy toys out of sleeping areas can help establish a clear association between the room and rest.

Teenagers face a different challenge. Phones, tablets, gaming systems, and televisions can make it difficult to switch off mentally before bedtime. Encouraging device-free periods before sleep can help create a healthier evening routine.

Design a Bedroom That Encourages Relaxation

A child’s bedroom often serves multiple purposes. It may be a place for sleeping, playing, studying, and socialising. However, when all activities take place in the same space, it can become harder for the brain to associate the room with rest.

Simple design choices can help create a more calming atmosphere. Neutral colours, soft textures, and organised storage can reduce visual clutter. Keeping bedrooms tidy may also help children feel more relaxed when preparing for sleep.

For babies and toddlers, avoid overcrowding the room with bright lights and stimulating decorations near the sleeping area. Older children and teens can benefit from creating separate zones for homework, hobbies, and relaxation whenever space allows.

Terrys Fabrics offers a range of window-dressing options that support this balanced approach, helping families create bedrooms that feel comfortable during the day while remaining restful at night.

Adapt the Environment as Children Grow

A sleep environment that works well for a baby may not suit a teenager. As children develop, their sleep needs and preferences change. Babies often benefit from consistent surroundings, gentle lighting, and minimal distractions. Toddlers may feel more secure with familiar bedding, favourite comfort items, and predictable bedtime cues.

School-age children usually appreciate having some input into their room design. Allowing them to choose colours, bedding, or decorative details can encourage a sense of ownership while maintaining a sleep-friendly space.

Teenagers often stay up later due to changing biological sleep patterns. Blackout curtains are particularly useful for helping them sleep through early-morning light, especially on weekends or during school holidays. Giving teens greater responsibility for managing their own sleep environment can also help establish healthy habits that carry into adulthood.

Build a Consistent Bedtime Atmosphere

The environment surrounding bedtime matters just as much as the physical room itself. Consistency helps children recognise when it’s time to wind down.

Simple routines such as dimming lights, reading a book, listening to calming music, or taking a warm bath can help prepare the body and mind for sleep. These habits become even more effective when combined with a bedroom that supports rest through darkness, comfort, and reduced distractions.

Rather than making dramatic changes overnight, focus on small improvements that can be maintained long term. A few thoughtful adjustments often produce better results than an overly complicated bedtime setup.

Creating a better sleep environment does not require a complete bedroom makeover. In many cases, simple changes such as improving light control, reducing distractions, maintaining a comfortable temperature, and establishing consistent routines can make a meaningful difference.

As children move from infancy to adolescence, their sleep needs evolve. By adapting their surroundings to match those changing needs, parents can help create conditions that support healthier sleep, better daily routines, and greater overall wellbeing for years to come.

A family kitchen is more than a place to prepare meals. It is where busy mornings begin, homework happens at the table, and everyone gathers at the end of the day. For many homeowners, creating a kitchen that feels welcoming, practical, and stylish means choosing features that combine function with timeless design. A stainless steel range hood is one of those details that can completely change the look and atmosphere of the space.

As interior design trends continue to move towards open-plan living and multifunctional kitchens, range hoods are no longer hidden appliances. They have become design features that can add character while improving ventilation and comfort. As Holly Antoine from Decoist explains, “A range hood can be a stunning focal point of your space, adding flair and elegance to your kitchen.”

For families looking to invest in a kitchen that feels personal and built to last, the right brand matters. From handcrafted statement pieces to reliable everyday options, these are some of the best stainless steel range hood brands worth considering.

1. CopperSmith – The Best Choice for Custom Stainless Steel Range Hoods

For homeowners who want their kitchen to feel unique rather than mass-produced, CopperSmith stands out as the leading choice. The brand creates sustainable products for your forever home, combining artisan craftsmanship with exceptional metalwork.

CopperSmith’s stainless steel range hoods are designed for homeowners, interior designers, architects, and builders who want more than a standard appliance. With more than 65 models and over 80 finishes and textures available, the brand offers endless customization options, allowing customers to create a range hood that matches their exact vision, whether that means a modern minimalist kitchen or a warmer, more traditional family space.

Every piece is handcrafted using premium metals, with the ability to customize size, finish, and material. This makes each hood feel like a true architectural feature rather than just another kitchen fitting. Their concierge-level service helps bring individual ideas to life, making the design process feel personal from start to finish.

CopperSmith also offers a broader range of architectural products, including artisan-crafted sinks, furniture, bathtubs, outdoor tables, fire pits, and planters. This focus on thoughtful craftsmanship makes the brand a trusted partner for residential and commercial projects worldwide.

With thousands of 5-star reviews and a reputation for exceptional craftsmanship, CopperSmith is an ideal choice for families seeking a kitchen centrepiece that combines beauty, durability, and sustainability. Explore their stainless steel range hood designs a tworldcoppersmith.com.

2. Bosch – A Practical Choice for Modern Family Kitchens

Bosch remains one of the most recognized names in kitchen appliances, offering stainless steel range hoods designed around everyday practicality. For families looking for a dependable option that blends into a modern kitchen, Bosch provides a range of styles, including wall-mounted and integrated designs.

The brand focuses on clean aesthetics and straightforward functionality, making its products suitable for homeowners who want a polished kitchen without adding overly decorative features. Stainless steel finishes work well with many kitchen styles, from contemporary spaces to more classic layouts.

Bosch range hoods can be a suitable choice for busy households where cooking happens regularly and easy maintenance is important. The designs generally complement other kitchen appliances, helping create a coordinated look.

While Bosch may appeal more to homeowners seeking a familiar appliance brand than to those seeking a fully customized design experience, it remains a popular option for practical kitchen upgrades. It offers a balance of style and function for families who want a reliable addition to their cooking space.

3. AEG – Sleek European Design for Contemporary Homes

AEG is another established kitchen appliance brand known for modern designs and functional features. Its stainless steel range hoods are designed to complement contemporary interiors, particularly kitchens that favour clean lines and understated finishes.

For families updating their homes, AEG offers options that can fit into streamlined kitchen designs without becoming the main visual focus. The stainless steel finish provides a professional look that pairs well with modern cabinetry, stone worktops, and other metallic finishes.

The brand’s approach combines performance with a simple aesthetic, making it a consideration for homeowners seeking a stylish yet practical kitchen appliance.

AEG may not offer the same level of handcrafted personalization as luxury custom manufacturers. Still, its range hoods offer a neat solution for families seeking a recognized European appliance brand with a modern feel.

4. Smeg – A Design-Led Option for Stylish Kitchens

Smeg is widely recognized for bringing personality and style into kitchen design. Known for its distinctive approach to appliances, the brand appeals to homeowners who see their kitchen as an expression of their personal taste.

Smeg stainless steel range hoods offer a more design-focused option, particularly for families who want their kitchen appliances to enhance the room’s overall look. The brand’s products often suit kitchens where aesthetics play an important role, including modern, retro-inspired, and character-filled interiors.

A stainless steel hood from Smeg can help create a cohesive kitchen design, especially when paired with other statement appliances. The brand is often chosen by homeowners who appreciate recognizable styling and a strong visual identity.

While Smeg provides attractive design options, families seeking completely tailored dimensions, finishes, and handcrafted metalwork may prefer a more bespoke approach. However, for those wanting a stylish branded appliance, Smeg remains a familiar choice.

Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose the Best Stainless Steel Range Hood

Choosing a stainless steel range hood involves more than selecting a style that looks good. The best option should suit your cooking habits, kitchen layout, and long-term design goals.

Consider the Kitchen Layout

The layout of your kitchen will influence the type of range hood you need. Wall-mounted hoods work well above traditional cookers, while island hoods can become a dramatic centrepiece in open-plan kitchens.

For family homes where the kitchen connects with dining and living spaces, choosing a hood that complements the overall interior design is especially important.

Look at Customization Options

A range hood can become one of the most noticeable features in a kitchen. Brands like CopperSmith allow homeowners to customize finishes, textures, materials, and sizing, making it easier to create a truly personal design.

This is particularly useful for renovation projects where standard measurements may not achieve the desired look.

Think About Durability and Maintenance

“Stainless steel remains one of the most popular and practical choices for range hoods.” — Cabinet IQ

Stainless steel is valued for its durability, timeless appearance, and versatility across many interior styles. It can create a professional kitchen feel while remaining easy to coordinate with other materials.

Balance Function and Style

A range hood should not only look good but also support comfortable cooking. Consider factors such as ventilation needs, kitchen size, and how often your household cooks.

The right choice should improve the everyday experience of the kitchen while adding to the home’s overall design

For modern family homes, a stainless steel range hood can be both a practical investment and a design statement. While brands like Bosch, AEG, and Smeg offer recognized options for homeowners seeking reliable kitchen upgrades, CopperSmith leads the way for those wanting a handcrafted, custom-designed centrepiece.

With sustainable craftsmanship, extensive customization options, and a focus on creating products made for lasting homes, CopperSmith offers a unique approach to kitchen design, turning everyday spaces into something truly memorable.

After-school clubs can be wonderful for children. They give kids a chance to try something new, run off some energy, make friends, and build confidence outside the classroom. For parents, the week can work a little better as well, especially when school, work, and family life all seem to land at once.

Still, leaving your child with another adult, even for an hour of football, drama, coding, dance, or music, takes trust. Most clubs are run by kind, capable people who genuinely want children to enjoy themselves and feel safe. Even so, a few calm questions before signing up can make all the difference. A good club will not mind being asked. The best ones will already have the answers ready.

Ask who is responsible for safeguarding

Before your child starts a new club or activity, ask who is responsible for safeguarding and what happens if a concern is raised. The answer should be clear and straightforward. You should not be made to feel awkward for asking.

Parents should expect clear safety arrangements around after-school clubs, tuition, and community activities, including who children can speak to, how adults are supervised, and how concerns are recorded.

A few simple questions are enough. Who is the safeguarding lead? Are staff and volunteers checked? What training do they receive? How would parents be contacted if something happened? The answers should feel calm, specific, and practical. If they sound vague, rushed, or overly casual, pay attention.

Check How Adults Are Supervised

A club can have friendly staff, a cheerful sign-in desk, and a timetable full of exciting activities, but supervision is what keeps the session safe. Ask how many adults are present, whether children are ever alone with one adult, and what happens during toilet breaks, changing time, or one-to-one coaching.

Collection rules matter as well. Can another parent pick your child up? Is written permission needed? What happens if you are late? These details may sound small, but they show whether the organisers have thought carefully about the moments around the activity, not the activity itself.

Listen to the way they respond. A confident provider should be able to explain the basics without becoming defensive. You are not being difficult. You are doing the quiet, sensible admin that helps keep children safe.

Talk to Your Child Before the First Session

Safety starts before the club begins. Talk to your child about who will be there, what they will be doing, and what they can do if they feel unsure, uncomfortable, or left out. Keep the conversation light and simple, especially with younger children.

The small habits behind nurturing and empowering children in London often begin at home, where kids learn that their feelings matter and their voice will be taken seriously.

Remind your child that they can say no, ask for help, stay near a group, or tell you if something feels odd. You do not need to frighten them to help them stay safe. Clear words, a trusted adult, and the confidence to speak up are far more useful.

What UK Parents Can Learn from Safeguarding Cases Abroad

For many UK families, after-school clubs and activities are part of the weekly routine. In London, a child might go straight from school to football, drama, coding, tutoring, dance, or a faith-based youth group before heading home for dinner. Parents often rely on local recommendations, familiar faces, and the sense that a place is well run. Those instincts are useful, but they should sit alongside practical questions about safety.

In the US, parents often face similar concerns, although local communities and state-level cases can shape the conversation. In Pennsylvania, institutional abuse scandals have made many families more aware of how long concerns can stay hidden when authority goes unquestioned. In California, parents may consider safety across schools, sports clubs, camps, and youth organizations. In Texas, where communities can be spread across large distances, clear reporting routes matter when children spend time with trusted adults outside their usual family network.

Illinois is a useful point of comparison because it includes large urban communities around Chicago as well as smaller parish, school, and neighbourhood networks where families may know adults by name or reputation. For parents thinking about how trust can be built around long-standing local institutions, what happened in Joliet parishes shows why familiar places still need clear boundaries, proper supervision, and a safe way to raise concerns.

For London parents, the point is practical, not frightening. A good club, class, or activity should be able to explain who is responsible for children, how adults are supervised, and what happens if a child says something feels wrong. Reputation can be reassuring, but it should never be the only safeguard.

Pay Attention to Communication with Parents

A well-run club should make communication easy. You should know who to contact, how quickly they usually reply, and what sort of updates to expect if plans change. If a session moves to a different room, a coach is replaced, or children are collected from another entrance, parents should not be left guessing.

Look at the details that are easy to overlook. Is there a proper sign-in and sign-out process? Are parents told who can take photos or videos? Are there clear rules about staff messaging children directly? If your child is going on a trip, competing in a match, or staying late for rehearsal, you should know who is responsible at each stage.

Good communication does not need to be fancy. It needs to be clear, consistent, and easy to understand. When parents know what is happening, children are safer, and everyone feels more settled.

Trust your instincts if something feels vague

Parents are often told not to worry, not to make a fuss, or not to be “that parent.” Ignore that pressure. If something feels unclear, rushed, or oddly defensive, it is reasonable to ask again.

Vague answers can sound harmless at first. “We have never had a problem,” “everyone knows everyone here,” or “the children love it” may all be true. They still do not answer practical safety questions. You need to know who supervises the children, how concerns are handled, and what happens when the normal routine changes.

Your instinct is not a formal safeguarding check, but it is part of the picture. If a club makes you feel silly for asking sensible questions, that tells you something. A safe setting should make parents feel informed, not awkward.

Safe Clubs Welcome Sensible Questions

The best clubs and activities do not treat safety questions as criticism. They understand that parents are trusting them with someone precious, and they are usually happy to explain how things work.

A strong answer does not need to be complicated. You want to hear that adults are checked, children are supervised, concerns are recorded, and parents are contacted when needed. You also want to know that your child will be listened to if they feel uncomfortable, worried, or unsure.

After-school clubs should be fun. They should help children grow in confidence, make friends, and discover what they enjoy. With a few careful questions at the start, parents can feel more confident that the place they choose is exciting, welcoming, and safe enough to trust.

When an invitation lands promising an evening of tacos, frozen margaritas and a DJ spinning until late, all in honour of David Beckham’s favourite Miami taco joint landing in London, you cancel your Thursday night plans and you dig out your stretchiest waistband. Yesterday evening, Carolina and I did exactly that, and we are still thinking about the pork.

Coyo Taco has taken over a sleek spot on The Broadway in St James’s Park, practically within waving distance of Big Ben, which feels wonderfully surreal when you have a frozen margarita in one hand and a taco in the other. The location is a gift. You can gaze at London icons while planning your next order, and believe me, you will be planning your next order.

I have eaten Mexican food across Mexico and California more times than I can count, which obviously makes me an insufferable enchilada and taco expert and I am absolutely fine with that. I know when tortillas have been pressed by hand and when guacamole has been smashed to order rather than sulking in a tub since Tuesday. So trust me when I tell you: this is the real thing. The corn tortillas are fresh and pillowy with just the right amount of chew. The guac is gloriously chunky and zinging with lime. But the meat, oh the meat. Whether chicken or pork, every single filling has been slow cooked to the point of collapse, juicy and deeply savoury and so generous that Carolina and I kept ordering “just one more to share” until the table looked like a taco battlefield and we had to undo a button.

We are not novices. We knew what we were doing. We simply chose to do it anyway.

The frozen margaritas are as lethal as promised. They need no introduction, as the menu says, but they do need a gentle warning. Slippery, slushy, dangerously drinkable and the perfect antidote to a warm London evening. Tequila and mezcal take centre stage in the hidden late night speakeasy, Bar Coyo, where the truly committed can even hire a tequila locker to store their own bottle between visits. That is either a stroke of genius or a fast track to becoming a regular, and I am not sure my liver needs the encouragement.

The vibe is pure Miami meets London. DJ decks are built into the bar, so the music thrums through the room without ever being so loud you cannot gossip, and the walls will soon host rotating murals from local artists, a nod to the brand’s Wynwood roots. By the time the bass kicked in and the second round of margaritas arrived, Carolina and I were plotting how to move in.

This is, quite simply, a brilliant night out. The daytime all-day dining with breakfast chilaquiles and Mexican coffee will no doubt make it a family friendly pit stop too, but last night was strictly grown ups behaving badly with napkins. David Beckham, Will Smith, Diplo and even Barack Obama have all given Coyo Taco their blessing, and now London finally gets a turn.

Go hungry. Wear stretch. Order one of everything. And if you see two women by the bar arguing passionately over the last al pastor taco, do be a love and look the other way.

Coyo Taco, The Broadway, St James’s Park, London. Open now for all-day dining with Bar Coyo keeping things lively late into the night. https://coyotaco.co.uk/

Space Explorers: The International Space Station Experience has finally made its European debut in Camden, and after months of hearing about its global success I could not wait to take my family along. It is, quite simply, the most immersive virtual reality adventure I have ever tried. From the moment I pulled on the lightweight headset, the basement venue dissolved and I was no longer standing on Camden High Street. I was floating 250 miles above Earth aboard the International Space Station, and the view was genuinely breathtaking.

What sets this attraction apart is the way it marries astonishingly advanced VR technology with real, high resolution footage captured during actual NASA missions. The production team used custom engineered camera systems designed to operate both inside and outside the station, and the result is extraordinary. You are not watching a computer generated approximation of space. You are walking through filmed reality, layered seamlessly onto a painstakingly detailed 3D model of the ISS. The effect is so convincing that you instinctively find yourself ducking through hatches and stepping carefully over equipment, even though your rational brain knows the floor is entirely clear.

One of the richest details is how much you learn about daily life in orbit. I drifted through the crew quarters, peeked inside the galley where astronauts prepare their meals, and watched them demonstrate how they exercise on specially designed treadmills and resistance machines. The experience does not just show you the station; it lets you witness the tiny, fascinating routines that make long duration spaceflight possible. My eighteen year old was especially tickled by the footage of an astronaut demonstrating how to brush your teeth when water floats away in spheres, and I found myself deeply absorbed in a segment showing the painstaking scientific experiments running inside the laboratory module.

The spacewalk footage was, for me, the emotional heart of the whole journey. You stand at the threshold of the airlock and then you are outside, with nothing but a visor between you and the infinite blackness. Watching real astronauts work on the station’s exterior while the glowing, swirling surface of Earth rolls silently beneath them stirred the kind of quiet awe that is very hard to put into words. Several members of our group, adults included, simply stood still and stared. That moment beautifully captures what astronauts describe as the “overview effect”, the profound shift in perspective that comes from seeing our planet hanging in the void, fragile and borderless. It was surprisingly moving, and I noticed more than one person wiping their eyes beneath their headset.

The free roaming format is the feature that elevates everything. This is not a ride where you sit strapped into a chair while the world moves around you. You physically walk, turn corners, step towards objects that interest you, and explore alongside your group. Each person appears as an avatar, a floating, slightly comical space suited figure that somehow makes the shared experience even more joyful. Watching my daughter bob past a control panel and wave at me, or seeing my friend attempt a slow motion space somersault across the Harmony module, had us all laughing together in a way that felt wonderfully surreal. It really is like sharing the same strange and beautiful dream.

We were a mixed age group ranging from eight to well over forty, and every single one of us came out buzzing. The minimum age is eight, and I would say that is about right; younger children might find the headset a little heavy and the quiet intensity of some moments unsettling, but for curious primary schoolers and teenagers it is absolute gold. The staff were warm and reassuring, talking us through a brief orientation before we entered and making sure everyone felt comfortable with the equipment. There are lockers for your bags, the whole space feels calm and well organised, and the 35 minute runtime felt perfectly judged, long enough to become completely absorbed but short enough to leave you wanting more.

The scale of what has been achieved here is staggering. Fewer than 300 human beings have ever actually visited the International Space Station. This experience, adapted from the Emmy Award winning series Space Explorers and already enjoyed by more than 500,000 visitors in cities from Montreal to Shanghai, is the closest most of us will ever get. It is a residency rather than a permanent fixture, running for a limited time from 19th June, and I would strongly urge families to book sooner rather than later. Camden High Street is wonderfully easy to reach, and we made a whole afternoon of it by combining the experience with a stroll along the canal and a bite to eat in the market afterwards.

The Essentials

Space Explorers: The ISS Experience is at Eclipso London, Basement Floor, 213-219 Camden High Street, NW1 8QR. It is open every day from 11am to 8pm, and the whole visit runs to approximately 35 minutes. Tickets cost £34 for adults and £25 for children aged eight and over. A family pack for two adults and two children comes in at £101, and a group bundle for four or more people is £125. Booking online ahead of your visit is strongly recommended.

Whether you are space obsessed or simply hunting for a family day out that genuinely brings everyone together in wonder, this is a rare and transporting treat. We left with full hearts, spinning heads, and two children who are now utterly determined to become astronauts. For a basement in Camden, that is quite something.

In an education landscape increasingly shaped by debates over financial literacy, civics, media influence, and real-world preparedness, Tuttle Twins has emerged as a notable participant in the growing market for supplemental educational content. Founded in the United States by Connor Boyack, president of the Libertas Institute, the brand was launched in 2014 with the aim of helping parents introduce complex social, economic, and historical ideas to children through storytelling. Since releasing its first books, the company reports that it has sold more than seven million copies.

Rather than functioning as a traditional curriculum provider, Tuttle Twins positions itself as a family-focused educational resource. Its catalog includes illustrated storybooks for children, toddler books, workbooks, audiobooks, parent guides, and entrepreneurship-focused titles for teenagers. The brand has attracted attention not only within homeschooling communities but also among mainstream families seeking educational materials that extend beyond classroom instruction.

Making Complex Ideas Accessible Through Storytelling

One of the defining characteristics of Tuttle Twins is its effort to simplify concepts that are often considered difficult for children to understand. The series draws inspiration from economic, political, and philosophical works by thinkers such as Ludwig von Mises, F.A. Hayek, and Frédéric Bastiat. Rather than presenting these ideas in academic language, the books translate them into age-appropriate stories featuring recurring characters Ethan and Emily.

This approach reflects a broader trend in educational publishing, where narrative-based learning is increasingly used to improve engagement and retention. Research on educational storytelling has consistently found that stories can help learners remember information more effectively than isolated facts. Tuttle Twins has incorporated this principle into its publishing strategy, arguing that children are more likely to grasp concepts such as inflation, property rights, entrepreneurship, and personal responsibility when they are embedded in relatable adventures.

Reviews from homeschool-focused publications including Homeschool.com, Maestra Mom, and Teacher Tutor Mom frequently highlight the accessibility of the books and their ability to introduce advanced topics without overwhelming younger readers. These assessments often point to the series’ practical use in family learning environments.

Addressing Demand for Financial Literacy and Real-World Skills

Financial literacy remains one of the most frequently requested educational subjects among parents. Tuttle Twins has built a significant portion of its product line around this demand, offering books that explain money, markets, entrepreneurship, and economic decision-making in language designed for children.

The brand’s positioning aligns with wider concerns about educational outcomes. According to data cited by the company, 90% of parents do not feel confident that schools are adequately preparing children for real-world success. In response, Tuttle Twins focuses on topics that many families perceive as under-represented in traditional education, including personal finance, critical thinking, problem-solving, and business creation.

Its teen-focused materials expand on these themes by introducing entrepreneurship and decision-making through interactive formats, including narrative guides and choose-your-own-adventure-style books. These resources are intended to help older students engage with practical scenarios that connect economic concepts to everyday life.

The company’s educational philosophy has been discussed in interviews with founder Connor Boyack and in publications associated with liberty-orientated education. While supporters view the materials as a useful supplement to conventional schooling, some critics argue that the books reflect a specific ideological perspective. Such critiques generally focus on the presentation of economic and political ideas through a classical liberal or libertarian framework. The existence of these debates has contributed to the brand’s visibility within discussions about alternative education.

A Resource for Both Homeschool and Mainstream Families

Although Tuttle Twins is often associated with homeschooling, company data suggests its audience is more diverse than commonly assumed. The brand reports that approximately 78% of its customers send their children to public schools, indicating that many families use the materials as a supplement rather than a replacement for formal education.

This broader appeal has become an important aspect of the company’s growth strategy. Leadership has stated that while homeschool families remain an important customer segment, they are expected to represent a smaller share of overall revenue as the brand expands into mainstream markets.

The audience is predominantly composed of mothers between the ages of 24 and 54, who account for roughly 78% to 80% of purchases. Grandmothers represent another significant customer group, often purchasing books as gifts. Families with multiple children also form a substantial portion of the customer base, creating demand for products that span different developmental stages.

For parents seeking age-specific educational resources, The Tuttle Twins offers collections tailored to various reading levels, including elementary-age children who are beginning to engage with more advanced topics.

Encouraging Family Discussion Beyond the Classroom

Another distinctive aspect of the brand is its emphasis on parent-child engagement. Tuttle Twins frequently describes its desired outcome as creating a “Dinner Table Moment” – a conversation sparked by ideas introduced in the books.

This focus reflects a wider movement toward family-centered learning. Educational researchers and homeschooling advocates have increasingly emphasized the role of discussion in helping children process complex information. By pairing storybooks with workbooks, parent guides, and discussion materials, Tuttle Twins aims to support conversations that continue after reading sessions end.

Parent reviews often cite these discussions as a key benefit. Rather than treating educational content as a standalone activity, families use the materials as prompts for broader conversations about history, economics, ethics, and civic responsibility. This model positions parents as active participants in the learning process rather than passive observers.

Position Within a Growing Alternative Education Market

Tuttle Twins operates within a rapidly expanding ecosystem of educational alternatives that includes organizations such as PragerU Kids, Hillsdale K-12, Classical Conversations, Khan Academy Kids, Schoolhouse Rock, and Liberty’s Kids. While these organizations vary significantly in philosophy and format, they share a common goal of providing educational content outside traditional institutional channels.

What distinguishes Tuttle Twins is its focus on combining economics, civics, entrepreneurship, and storytelling within a single children’s publishing brand. Industry observers note that few competitors occupy the specific niche of introducing free-market and liberty-orientated concepts to younger audiences through illustrated fiction.

As debates about education continue to evolve, Tuttle Twins represents a broader shift toward parent-directed learning resources. Its growth since 2014 suggests sustained demand for educational materials that address financial literacy, civic understanding, and critical thinking through family-centred storytelling. Whether viewed as a supplemental learning tool, a values-based educational resource, or part of the wider alternative education movement, the brand has established a visible presence in a changing educational marketplace.

When I heard about a new afternoon tea launching under a railway arch in Battersea, I had my doubts. No chintz. No bone china. No hushed, reverent atmosphere where you feel like you should whisper about the weather. I thought Jack & Beyond would be just a bakery under the arches, with a menu that promised to be “genuinely different.” I was wrong. Spectacularly wrong.

The setting: Not Instagrammable (And thank goodness)

This is not the Ritz. It is not Fortnum’s. There is no pianist playing gentle show tunes while you sip your Earl Grey. The arches are industrial. The décor is functional. If you are looking for a pink velvet throne and a photo op for your grid, you might be disappointed.

But that is exactly what makes it brilliant. There is no pretence. No performance. Just a proper bakery where you can actually see the team preparing everything fresh in the open kitchen behind glass. You can watch them pipe, decorate, bake. It is transparency that feels almost rebellious in an age of smoke and mirrors.

The food: Actually, genuinely fabulous

The scones. I am a scone purist, and I do not apologise for it.

The plain scone was perfect: crumbly, buttery, everything a scone should be. The cheese scone was a savoury triumph. But the beetroot scone? That was a revelation. Out of this world. I have never had one before, and now I cannot stop thinking about it. It is delicious on its own, but with clotted cream and jam? Absolute magic. My notes literally say “Fab with cream and jam but also by itself as it is very tasty.” That is the kind of scone that deserves a standing ovation. I got a doggie bag to take home so tomorrow I will be reliving that moment.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="888" height="1024" data-attachment-id="100788" data-permalink="https://www.londonmumsmagazine.com/shopping/tested-recommended/battersea-power-station-tea-party-why-this-archway-bakery-beats-the-ritz/attachment/battersea-power-station-afternoon-tea/" data-orig-file="https://www.londonmumsmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Battersea-power-station-Afternoon-tea-.jpeg" data-orig-size="2240,2584" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"1.8","credit":"","camera":"iPhone 11","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1781709621","copyright":"","focal_length":"4.25","iso":"80","shutter_speed":"0.02","title":"","orientation":"1","alt":""}" data-image-title="Battersea power station Afternoon tea" data-image-description="
Battersea power station Afternoon tea

The savouries were equally impressive. I enjoyed the avocado and feta on fresh baguette, and the tomatoes with mozzarella. Fresh. Flavourful. No sad, limp sandwiches here.

Then the sweets. The Electric Lemon Tart was zingy and bright. The flower fruit custard tart was delicate and pretty with a very fresh custard that for me personally was a time travel machine back to Italy when my mum makes custard pudding on a Sunday afternoon. The chocolate chip brick brownie fingers were dangerously addictive.

The best part? You can taste the quality. This is not mass-produced, chilled, and wheeled out. This is made fresh, with care, by people who actually care. And you can see that for yourself in the open space.

The interactive bit

You also get to decorate your own cat or dog cupcake. Is it slightly chaotic? Yes. Are the results questionable? Absolutely. But it is fun, and the kids (or the big kids among us) will love it. Plus, £1 from every booking goes to Battersea Dogs & Cats Home. So you are eating cake, getting creative, and doing a good deed. Win-win.

The verdict

Is the atmosphere perfect? No. But that is not the point. The point is the food, and the food is extraordinary. I would choose this over the Ritz any day. It is honest. It is fresh. It is real. And for £45 a head with bottomless teas, it is genuinely good value in a city where afternoon tea can easily set you back double that for far less soul.

I had a good chat with the founder, Fulop Gabor, a Hungarian-born baker whose journey from washing dishes to opening this extraordinary bakery is as inspiring as his creations. When I told him the beetroot scone was “out of this world” and that I had “never had anything like it before,” he beamed and told me that is exactly the reaction they hoped for. “For me, baking is art,” he said, and watching his team work through the open kitchen glass, you can see that is not just talk. He genuinely cares about every detail, and it shows in every bite. As he put it: “We want Jack & Beyond to be genuinely different.” And trust me, it is.

Jack & Beyond has created something special. It is not trying to be what it is not. And that, in my book, is worth celebrating.

I went to the preview sitting and ate far too many scones. No regrets.

Most people think skin aging is something that happens with time, but they forget that age also plays a role, and your skin is constantly responding to how you eat, sleep, manage stress, and care for your health.

These changes rarely happen overnight; instead, your skin gradually reflects years of daily habits, both good and bad. That is why two people of the same age can have different skin health despite sharing similar genetics. By creating habits that support healthy skin, you can feel confident in your appearance while also improving your well-being. Below are a few tips that can help you.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" data-attachment-id="20128" data-permalink="https://www.londonmumsmagazine.com/mums-tips/fashion-beauty/beautifully-simple/attachment/beautiful-young-woman-2/" data-orig-file="https://www.londonmumsmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/skincare-beautifully-simple1.jpg" data-orig-size="600,900" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"MAXFX - Fotolia","camera":"","caption":"Beautiful young hispanic woman","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"MAXFX - Fotolia","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"Beautiful young woman"}" data-image-title="Beautiful young woman" data-image-description="
Beautiful young hispanic woman

Your Skin Reflects Your Choices

Your skin is your body’s largest organ, and like every other part of your body, it depends on consistent care to function well. Many people spend hundreds of dollars on skincare products while overlooking the simple daily habits that influence skin health for the long term. Healthy lifestyle choices support the skin from the inside out, helping maintain elasticity, hydration, and a stronger natural barrier against environmental damage.

Sleep and Stress Leave Visible Signs

During sleep, the body carries out many important repair processes, so when quality sleep becomes a regular problem, the skin may gradually appear duller, less refreshed, and more prone to signs of fatigue.

Stress can have a similar effect, which is when some people notice more breakouts, increased sensitivity, or a pale complexion during particularly stressful times. Managing stress does not mean eliminating every challenge from life, what it means is to find healthy ways to respond through exercise, hobbies, meaningful relationships, or simply allowing yourself time to rest.

Balanced Nutrition Is Vital

While there is no food that can prevent aging, consistently eating a variety of nutritious foods helps provide the building blocks your skin needs. Hydration is also just as important as the food you eat. For instance, if you do a facelift surgery in Turkey, doctors would always advise that drinking enough water supports body function, and while it is not a magic solution for perfect skin, proper hydration contributes to healthy skin.

You also need to understand that highly processed foods and excessive sugar do not automatically ruin your skin, but making them the foundation of your diet can gradually affect overall health, which can eventually be reflected in your appearance.

Protect Yourself From the Sun

Only a few lifestyle habits have as much influence on skin appearance as protecting yourself from excessive sun exposure. Ultraviolet rays gradually break down collagen and elastin, two proteins that help keep skin firm and resilient. This process happens slowly, which is why many people do not notice the effects until years later.

It’s easy to adopt simple habits such as wearing sunscreen, seeking shade during peak sunlight hours, and using protective clothing. The benefits may not be obvious immediately, but they become increasingly valuable with consistency.

Small Habits Matter

One late night or one unhealthy meal will not dramatically change your appearance, but the real difference comes from habits that are repeated day after day. For example, consistently spending years smoking can gradually affect the skin’s texture and elasticity, which might later require surgical procedures to fix. However, those processes also remind people that no cosmetic procedure replaces the value of healthy daily habits.

Lifestyle choices continue to influence how the skin heals, ages, and maintains its appearance long after any treatment. The important point is that your skin remembers what you do consistently. Daily routines may seem small today, but their effects often become much more noticeable as the years pass.

Instead of focusing only on changing your appearance later, invest in the habits that support healthier skin today.
There comes a point where every franchise risks overstaying its welcome. After Toy Story 4, another sequel felt unnecessary. Yet Toy Story 5 manages to find a reason to exist.

The film explores what happens when the world changes and the things that once gave us meaning begin to disappear. While previous entries focused on being outgrown by children, this chapter widens the lens. The toys are no longer just competing for attention, they are confronting a future where their place in children’s lives is increasingly uncertain.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="884" data-attachment-id="100781" data-permalink="https://www.londonmumsmagazine.com/entertainment/movies-tested-recommended/movie-review-toy-story-5/attachment/london-mum-and-teen-reporters-attending-screening-of-toy-story-5/" data-orig-file="https://www.londonmumsmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/London-Mum-and-teen-reporters-attending-screening-of-Toy-story-5.jpg" data-orig-size="1035,894" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"1","alt":""}" data-image-title="London Mum and teen reporters attending screening of Toy story 5" data-image-description="
London Mums and teen reporters attending screening of Toy story 5

What makes the story work is its emotional honesty. Rather than relying entirely on nostalgia, it asks difficult questions about identity, relevance, and change. Woody’s journey is particularly effective because it feels like a continuation of themes the franchise has been building toward for decades. His struggle is no longer about belonging to a child, but understanding who he is when the role that defined him begins to evolve.

The animation is excellent. Pixar’s technical brilliance is now expected, but the visual storytelling remains impressive. The quieter scenes are often the strongest, allowing small expressions and moments of silence to carry emotional weight.

Not everything lands perfectly. Some supporting characters are pushed to the sidelines, and a few plot developments feel familiar. At times, the film leans on the audience’s affection for these characters rather than earning every emotional beat on its own terms.

One of the most interesting themes in Toy Story 5 is its look at how technology is reshaping childhood. With children increasingly drawn to screens, apps, and virtual entertainment, opportunities for imaginative play and in-person interaction can become less common. The film suggests that while technology offers endless ways to stay connected, it cannot fully replace the friendships, creativity, and shared experiences that come from spending time together in the real world. Through its story, Toy Story 5 encourages audiences to consider how modern technology influences the way young people communicate, play, and build meaningful relationships.

Toy Story 5 succeeds where many legacy sequels fail. It doesn’t simply revisit old memories; it builds on them. The film understands that the children who grew up with Woody and Buzz are adults now, and its themes reflect that reality.

It may not reach the emotional heights of Toy Story 3, but it offers a thoughtful look at modern childhood.

The news landed like a thunderclap in living rooms across the country. Under-16s will be banned from using Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and X from early 2027. The government is also considering an overnight curfew and measures to stop infinite scrolling for under-18s. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called it “a big moment for our country” and “a big step, a real change for our children and our future”.

As a mum, I felt a strange mix of relief and sadness. Relief that future generations might be spared the relentless grip of algorithmic feeds. Sadness that it took this long.

But here is the thing. My son Diego is almost 20 now. He did not get a mobile phone until he was 16, nearly 17. And I am convinced that decision shaped the young man he has become.

A different kind of childhood

While his friends were glued to screens, Diego was outside. He played sport. He cultivated hobbies. He built computers from scratch using scrap pieces, not because he had to, but because he wanted to. That curiosity and resourcefulness has now turned into something remarkable. He has started his own sustainable business with a friend, alongside his mechanical engineering studies at UCL.

I am not sure he would have done that if he had been hooked on social media nonsense from the age of 11.

Watching him grow up without a phone in his hand was not always easy. There were moments he felt left out. Times he asked why everyone else had one and he did not. But I held firm. And now I see the results: a young man who can hold a conversation, who reads, who builds, who creates. Not just scrolls.

What the ban actually means

The ban will cover platforms “whose purpose is to enable social interaction and which allow users to post material”. Messaging services like WhatsApp and Signal will not be included, nor will YouTube Kids. Features like livestreaming and strangers being able to contact children will also be restricted.

For under-18s, the government is looking at overnight curfews and breaks in infinite scrolling. AI “romantic companion” chatbots will have to enforce a minimum age of 18.

The regulations are expected to be passed before Christmas, with the ban coming into force by spring 2027.

How will it be enforced?

This is the million-pound question. The government says “highly effective age assurance” measures will be used, face scans or asking for ID. Ofcom has been asked to identify the best methods. Without accurate, continuous identity verification in place such a ban will only be superficial with tech-savvy children being able to work around the restrictions.

What the experts say

Child psychologist Dr Emily Crosby highlights that adolescence is a critical period for building identity and self-esteem. “Social media sites can provide distorted views of reality which can negatively influence a child and adolescent’s view of themselves and their lives,” she warns.

Dr Tom Maggs, a paediatrician, warns parents to expect a “social media withdrawal” period if restrictions are introduced. “When that habit is disrupted, it’s common to see irritability, boredom, restlessness and a strong urge to reach for a phone”.

Nevertheless, the ban is a much-needed intervention. For too long, we parents have been left to fight an uphill battle against platforms intentionally designed to be addictive.

However, a ban alone is not enough. If a child still has a smartphone with unhindered access to the internet, the core issues of digital distraction and vulnerability remain.

What parents can do now

School leaders from the Girls’ Day School Trust have shared eight practical steps parents can take before the ban comes into force:

Ban phones from bedrooms – improve sleep and reduce late-night scrolling.

Bring back screen-free mealtimes – make time for conversation.

Don’t rush into social media – just because a child wants an app doesn’t mean they need it.

Know what they’re looking at – review privacy settings and online activity together.

Set boundaries and stick to them – clear rules prevent devices becoming the default.

Encourage activities – sport, music, reading, hobbies build confidence and connection.

Talk more, confiscate less – young people are more likely to discuss problems if they know they won’t immediately lose access.

Teach them how social media really works – help them understand algorithms and how they shape opinions and self-image.

A glimpse of what is possible

In Australia, where a similar ban was introduced in December 2025, the results have been striking. Children are doing more sport, more reading, coming out of their rooms to the family room, talking with their parents and siblings. They are walking the dog, buying milk, talking face to face to people. The reconnection is precious.

I saw that in my own home. Diego smiled more. He engaged more. He built a future, not a follower count.

I cannot get those precious days back. But if this ban means more children get the childhood they deserve: one with real laughter, real connection, and real adventures, then it is a step worth taking.
