20 on tickets to see The Fantasticks at the Duchess Theatre in London

Valid all performances until 5th September

The world’s longest-running musical finally makes it to London after first wowing audiences on Broadway 50 years ago. Since its debut in 1960 it has played in over 2,000 cities and towns in 67 countries worldwide, and now makes its UK debut at the Duchess Theatre in London.

This brand new production of the much-loved musical is directed by Amon Miyamoto, bringing a fresh visual, emotional and musical energy to the show. The Fantasticks tells an allegorical story about two neighbouring fathers who put up a wall between their houses to ensure that their children fall in love, because they know children always do what their parents forbid.

After the children do fall in love, they discover their fathers’ plot and each go off and experience the world. Finally, they return to each other and appreciate the love they had after learning to recognise their true feelings.

An impressive cast includes David Burt (Les Miserables, Chess, Taboo), Edward Petherbridge (The Woman in White ), Clive Rowe (Chicago, Caroline, or Change), Carl Au (High School Musical), Luke Brady (Nightfall), Hadley Fraser (Peter Pan), Paul Hunter (The Fahrenheit Twins), and Lorna Want (Footloose The Musical).

This weekend at the Cadogan Hall in London and the Royal & Derngate in Northampton, two performances of a special concert were held to celebrate the 80th birthday of musicals composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim.

Stephen Sondheim is America’s, and arguably the world’s, most important living creator of musical theatre. His hallowed list of musical greats include the lyrics for West Side Story and Gypsy and music and lyrics to a catalogue of shows from A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum and Anyone Can Whistle in the 1960s, big-hitting shows of the 1970s such as Company, Follies and Sweeney Todd and his later work including Sunday In The Park With George, Into The Woods, Assassins and Passion.

I caught the concert at the Royal & Derngate, and the evening was beautifully held together by musicals star Maria Friedman. Alongside musical director David Firman, she ensured that the show struck a perfect balance between providing that sense of spontaneity and

The Broadway opening of Love Never Dies, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom sequel, has been officially postponed.

In a statement, the producers of the Broadway show said that the premiere will be delayed for several months, until around Spring 2011, whilst Lord Webber deals with “post-operative problems” from his treatment for prostate cancer.

He is currently starring in BBC One talent show Over The Rainbow to find a new Dorothy to star in a multi-million pound West End production of The Wizard of Oz.

Love Never Dies, which continues to do well at the box-office at the Adelphi Theatre in London, got mixed reviews when it opened last month. Ben Brantley, the chief theatre critic of the New York Times, was especially critical, which may also have been a factor in delaying the Broadway production whilst tweaks are made. A number of unconfirmed reports have cited that Lloyd Webber is unhappy with some key elements of the show including the opening and a new entrance for the Phantom.

The statement from the Broadway producers is as follows:

The Broadway premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s LOVE NEVER DIES will open at the Neil Simon Theatre in the Spring of 2011.

The original opening date, planned for November 2010, was set before Lloyd Webber was diagnosed with prostate cancer last fall. Although the cancer has been eradicated, there have been post-operative problems. These have been aggravated by recent air travel and Lloyd Webber’s doctors have requested that he does not take any further long-haul flights for the time being and until the problem has been investigated. This prevents him attending auditions and being part of the pre-production process in New York on the original schedule

Andrew Lloyd Webber is currently appearing in the BBC television series,
