Saturday 13th September. You are invited to Chiswick Pier to watch the most spectacular and entertaining boat race on the Thames. Now celebrating its 20th year, the Great River Race has become the biggest and most prestigious traditional boat race in Europe. There are around 300 crews from all over the globe taking part, ranging from competitive racers to leisure rowers, Hawaiian outriggers to Viking longboats, making it the most colourful and eclectic event on the Thames' racing calendar. The race covers a gruelling 22 mile course from Ham House to Greenwich. Doors open at 12.30m. The first boats are expected to pass Chiswick Pier at around 3pm. This is a terrific position from which to watch the race and there will be live music, refreshments, barbecue and Moroccan food, and a Fullers bar to ensure a great afternoon out for the whole family.

Phoenix Cinema, East Finchley, Kids Club Saturday 24th August, 12noon (activity from 11am, limited places). Arguably the greatest example of the work of master animator Hayao Miyazaki, the film opens with ten-year-old Chihiro on the long car journey with her family to their new home. When they come upon a blocked tunnel, her parents decide to have a look around, but Chihiro finds it scary. Beyond the tunnel they discover an abandoned amusement park. As Chihiro's bad feeling for the place continues, her parents discover an empty eatery that smells of fresh food. Her mother and father help themselves to the feast for free and suddenly turn into giant pigs. Chihiro is terrified and runs away. She learns that this peculiar place, where all sorts of bizarre gods and monsters reside, is a holiday resort for the supernatural after their exhausting tour of duty in the human world. Soon after befriending a boy named Haku, Chihiro learns the rules of the land. 2 hours and 5 minutes.

Perô is an exquisite production from the Dutch company Speeltheater, which, in the best European theatre tradition, combines quirky puppetry, actors and live operatic music to tell this story of love and friendship.
In a small Italian village, Perô, a bashful baker, is too nervous to declare his love for the girl next-door, Colombina. But one day a suave painter, Paletino, breezes into town and sweeps her off her feet. Will Colombina fall for his easy charms or will she realise that love has been on her doorstep all along?
