Caught the sunlight on the spire. I like the way the trees below my deck frame the church. Seems far off but in fact it is about four blocks away. Feels like country. Black and white because the day felt like it was already old, or it did to me, when it began.

And a creek runs through it…or conversely, god willin’ and the crick don’t rise or maybe, fish are jumpin’ and the livin’ is easy or maybe, just maybe, it is another morning in paradise and for those who gathered at the creek to go for a run on a Saturday morning in the spring, the livin’ was easy even if the running was not, the crick didn’t rise and if you believe in these things, god was willin’, so yes indeed, another morning in paradise shared and honored by all those in attendance, just out of sight but never out of mind.

“There was something I liked about her that I left in the French Quarter…”-Dyaln said that. Don’t know what happened here but the more I looked at it the more I liked it. Seemed like it came from another time, told a complete story that had deserts, and downed airmen, broken dreams and Manhattans, served by guys with fez’s, and crackling war news on the radio above the bar.

Black and White with saturation sky-felt like Tuscany except for the utility poles…took me awhile to figure out why it didn’t quite feel like it should. It occurred to me that it wasn’t Tuscany, that the light was familiar but not of that latitude and that the worn quality of the stone and wood was still not old, at least not in my memory of the back-roads outside of Sienna. On the other hand, fresh baked bread and strong coffee is universal regardless of what the foodies and the New York Times Food Section has to say, or more precisely, timeless, if you have just run some miles in the hills south of town, you’re hungry and cold, and the rest of the day is waiting.

Urge for Goin’

“I get the urge for goin’/but I never seem to go” I heard it first from Tom Rush, but Joni Mitchell wrote it. Came from a prairie town where icy winds brought deep snow until late spring. The geese rose up and went south in “chevron flight” because they had the “wings to go”. Trapped inside, the town hunkered down. Rode it out. Some days, here on the winter flight path in the Northwest where I live, the chevron flights pass overhead, honkin’ and “a racin’ on before the snow”… and I get an urge for going, but at very long last, I have no need to go.
