5th Grade News from Longyear

This week in science we are learning about plant and animal cells. Students will be doing several activities to help them learn the cell parts and their function. Students need to be able to identify the organelles in a diagram and tell their functions. We have taken notes with all this information and it should be studied nightly. Students should also be able to tell the differences between a plant and animal cell.

There will be a parent workshop sponsored by the GM Counseling Department and PTA on Friday, February 3 at 9:30 AM in the GM PTA Room. The topic will be "Tween Talk"- Dealing with minds, bodies, emotions, independence and discipline. The speaker will be Jennifer Vann

We are in the last week of our unit on Electricity and Magnetism. Students were given a formative assessment last Friday 1/20 and if their score was 93 or above they will not have to test on that material again. (electricity). The students know who they are. There will be a unit test on the same material plus magnets and electromagnets on Tuesday 1/31. Students who are exempt from the electricy content will just be quizzed on magnets and electromagnets. Students should study from their journal and from the formative assessment that was handed back to them.

Dear Parents,

I just wanted to let you know that, as a gala auction item, Ms. Brindley, Ms. Ofiara, and I are offering a "Scrapbook Party."

This will be for the auction winner plus 3 guests. Bring pictures and basic scrapbook supplies and we will create beautiful memories. Snack provided. Approximately 2 hours of fun in the classroom after school. Date and time to be worked out between teachers and parents.

The Gala Auction will be held February 4, 2012 at Olde Towne Athletic Club from 7 to 11 PM. All proceeds go back to GMEF.

The proceeds will be used to improve our school by providing funding for programs such as technology, educational curriculum and facility improvements. The GMEF will accumulate and distribute resources beyond those provided by Cobb County or the PTA, in order to further enhance, foster and enrich the educational experiences of all students at Garrison Mill.

Science Fair Project

Dear Parents,

It was such a pleasure to witness the amount of knowledge the students gained through the learning process while completing their science fair projects. The students clearly demonstrated a thorough understanding of the scientific process and science inquiry standards. We are blessed to have parental support of this process. We would like to thank Mrs. Haas in the Media Center for giving up her space for two days and the independent judges from Lasstier Science Honor Society who spent hours judging the projects. Students will be given their rubric back on Monday.

On Tuesday AFTER SCHOOL if anyone would like to bring their science fair project in that would be helpful. It will help with the traffic on Wednesday morning in the car pool line. If you cannot bring your project after school on Tuesday please arrive earlier rather than later on Wednesday if you are driving in. I think the projects should be ok on the bus too.

If you bring the project on Tuesday after school please bring it to room 401 and leave outside the door, I will be in a meeting.

Report Cards are in the blue Thursday Folder. Please sign the signature card and return it IN THE ENVELOPE, ASAP, Friday or Monday at the latest. The report card is yours to keep. Please return the envelope! I will not get anymore for the remainder of the report cards so I need to reuse these ones!

Just a reminder to those of you who did not bring classroom supplies such as tissues, clorox wipes and paper towels at the beginning of the year we are little low. I think the girls brought them in August. I do not need zip lock bags or hand sanitizer. Paper towels, wipes, tissues and if anyone has any pencils that would be helpful too! See you all Tuesday!
