“As time passes, people change, circumstances change, and even dreams can change”

America—the “beautiful country” (美国)–has always fascinated many Chinese in the modern age, especially film-makers. The journey from China to seek economic prosperity and success in America, and in particular New York City (the “Empire City”, with its representation of everything both good and bad about the US), is a trope that has been explored over and over again in various tragi-romances that Cinema Escapist has reviewed.

None of these tragi-romances more directly deals with the cultural tensions between a new life in America and an old life in China, coupled with the reappearance of past lovers, than Rain Li’s Beijing, New York. This film explores the theme of being pulled apart, whether by geographical/cultural distance (i.e. between New York and Beijing) or by love (that of the present and that of the past). Rain Li, a cinematographer who previously worked on blockbusters such as Hero, brings together famed actor Liu Ye (who once acted as a young Chairman Mao in Founding of a Party and starred alongside Jay Chou in Curse of the Golden Flower) and model Lin Chi-ling (the legendary beauty Xiaoqiao in Red Cliff) to star as Lenny and Jasmine, respectively.

Lenny is a successful Chinese CEO who journeys on business to New York at the bottom of the 2008 recession. Carrying the weight of an economic superpower beginning to flex its muscles on the global stage, Lenny meets up with his old friends and asks them about Jasmine, a friend from his youth. Jasmine, who emigrated to the United States much earlier than Lenny to pursue her musical dreams, is now performing odd jobs to get by in New York, ranging from acting as a tour guide to singing at a jazz club in the evenings. On a fortuitous 4th of July, she meets Joe, an investment banker who was laid off and decided to pursue his dreams of photography and art. As Jasmine and Lenny rekindle their long-time feelings, Joe finds a muse in Jasmine as he photographs her for his very first art exhibition. The ensuing love triangle fills the majority of the plot, as Lenny and Jasmine communicate during nights and mornings via their mobile phones between New York and Beijing, and Jasmine participates in American high society with Joe while Lenny sleeps.

The story of Beijing, New York is nothing extraordinary and entirely predictable; any accolades then, are due to its incredible cinematography (unsurprising given Rain Li’s background) and the complex contrast in Jasmine’s life — the choice between a future American life with Joe, and the choice to pursue her past love for Lenny. Lenny’s lack of English-speaking abilities is particularly contrasted with how Jasmine switches seamlessly between English and Chinese at dinner parties; this serves as a broader metaphor for how Jasmine is both immersed in and caught between two worlds, forced to choose one or the other. Sweeping views of New York and Beijing accompany Jasmine’s story, and while they do not drive the story forward, they distinguish Beijing, New York from many other movies on the same topic.

While on the surface Beijing, New York appears to be a simple romantic drama encompassing a love triangle, in reality Rain Li set much higher expectations for herself in this directorial debut. Li herself said that Beijing, New York is an exploration of the “journey to find true happiness and the joy, pain, and adventure that ensues when one is forced to integrate their dreams into reality”. Li’s mission statement is a lofty goal that carries great promises, but unfortunately those promises are not met. While the film makes a valiant effort to touch on the human experiences of Jasmine, Lenny and Joe, it fails to engage the audience in the passion and sorrows of each of the characters. So while I may consider Beijing, New York less tragic than films such as My Old Classmate or But Always, its artistic bent and literary overtures create a high barrier for the audience’s heart to experience the movie and thus leaves the viewer with a feeling of want after the film ends. Beijing, New York pushes the us to experience it story with the brain; this ends up failing to satisfy all but the most sophisticated film reviewers.

That is not to say, however, that Beijing, New York is a poorly-written film. In fact, Beijing, New Yorkdeserves acknowledgement for its desire to address issues that many second-generation Chinese (and broadly, Asian) immigrants experience on a daily basis. While the Fung Bros and Wong Fu touch upon the Asian-American experience from a more comedic perspective, Beijing, New York uses the story of Jasmine, Lenny and Joe as an allegory for the individual, internal experience of being caught between two worlds — the East and West.

“Say Yes” is a Mainland Chinese romantic comedy based on the hugely popular 1991 Japanese television series “101st Proposal”, which was previously adapted for the small screen in Korean a few years back. Sticking to the premise of a working class everyman falling in love with a rich, beautiful cellist, this new version was directed by Taiwanese helmer Leste Chen, who teams again with his “Love on Credit” leading lady Lin Chiling, joined by the ever likeable Huang Bo (“Lost in Thailand”) as her unlikely suitor. An official co-production with Fuji Television, the film was a considerable hit back in China, pulling in nearly 3 billion yen during its first few weeks of release.

The film opens with Huang Bo as construction worker Huang Da out on the 99th in a string of unsuccessful blind dates. Although his rendezvous doesn’t work out, he runs into the gorgeous Yeh Shun (Lin Chiling), a cello player nursing a broken heart after being jilted at the alter by the possibly dead (!) Xu Zhuo (Godfrey Gao, “All About Women”). The two quickly become friends, though Huang Bo finds himself wanting more, despite her refusal to commit or to take him seriously. Regardless, he finds the confidence to step up his romantic pursuit, pushing her to face up to her past and to make a life changing decision about her future.

As a romantic comedy, “Say Yes” is at once both utterly predictable and pleasingly unconventional, earning top marks for its choice of Huang Bo as leading man, one of China’s most charismatic and versatile actors. Undoubtedly somewhere far down the list when it comes to glamorous male paramours, his presence immediately sets the film apart, and though it basically revolves around Yeh Shun’s struggle to accept the less than attractive Huang Da as a viable partner, this does ground things somewhat, at least in certain respects. This also marks the film as romantic wish fulfilment of a different kind, seeming to offer the average male viewer the hope of landing a girlfriend with the looks of Lin Chiling, while vaguely nudging female audience members to look beyond physical appearance and put more value on kindness, devotion and security. Whatever Leste Chen’s intentions, the film is one of the few genre outings in China to openly acknowledge the class gap between rich and poor, and while the script only pays lip service to resulting issues, it feels less materialistic than other recent rom-coms as a result, which is definitely a good thing.

Though this message, and indeed the central relationship as a whole never comes across as terribly heartfelt, there’s a definite spark between the two stars, and their fun chemistry helps to keep things engaging, Chen wisely taking a light and unpretentious approach and avoiding too much melodrama or anything heavy. Also in the film’s favour is a surprisingly bizarre and random plot, which packs in some odd twists along the way to its inevitable conclusion. Though in fairness this is unlikely to have been intentional, the way in which Chen throws in a series of belief-stretching contrivances and soap opera clichés makes for some effective humour, which sits comfortably with the surprisingly funny comic relief, actress Qin Hailu (“A Simple Life”) doing a sterling job in the often thankless wacky best friend role. Chen has a good sense of pacing, which distracts from some of the nonsensical plotting, and the film has a fluffy, glossy and very commercial look, benefitting from the fact that the product placement not as offensive as in other genre efforts.

Although there’s nothing special enough about “Say Yes” to make it appeal beyond the usual romantic comedy fanbase, it’s definitely more enjoyable and palatable than most, and it at least offers a few variations on the usual themes. Huang Bo is as fun to watch as ever and Lin Chiling pouts prettily, and with Leste Chen doing a perfectly serviceable job as director the whole thing comes together really quite nicely.

Smith (Clive Owen), a drifter at a bus stop, sees a pregnant woman fleeing a hitman. Following them into a warehouse, Smith murders the hitman with a carrot and saves the woman. As more thugs arrive, Smith is forced to deliver the woman's baby (later named Oliver) during a firefight. Pursued by head assassin Karl Hertz (Paul Giamatti), the woman is soon shot and killed, forcing Smith to narrowly escape with Oliver.

Leaving the baby in a park, Smith hopes someone will adopt the child, only for a passing woman to be killed by Hertz. Realizing Hertz is trying to kill Oliver, Smith saves him, and attempts to leave him with a lactating prostitute named Donna (Monica Bellucci); despite his pleas, she refuses. Hertz arrives at the brothel shortly after and tortures Donna for information, only for Smith to return and kill Hertz's henchmen.

Taking Donna to his hideout, Smith realizes that Oliver stops crying when he hears heavy metal music, leading him to conclude his mother lived near a heavy metal club. Followed by Hertz, Smith is then forced to shoot his way out of his hideout, before he and Donna head to a nearby club. Heading above the club, they discover an apartment containing medical equipment and two dead pregnant women; Smith concludes the women were all impregnated with a specific man's sperm so they could birth matching bone marrow donors.

Hiding in a motel room, Smith and Donna are attacked by masked men during sex, forcing Smith to kill them while supporting Donna (apparently without her even being aware of the gunplay). Discovering his assailants' weapons are all "Hammerson" models unavailable to the public, Smith takes Donna and Oliver to a war museum, and hides them in a M24 Chaffee armored tank. Infiltrating the Hammerson factory, Smith witnesses Hertz and Hammerson in conversation about how they do not want the Second Amendment repealed by the next President, and notices Hammerson owns a German Shepherdcalled Duchess. Smith booby-traps the entire facility, allowing him to kill his assailants and escape.

Smith soon notices an article on Senator Harry Rutledge (Daniel Pilon), a presidential candidate campaigning for stricter gun laws. Smith deduces Rutledge has cancer and requires a bone marrow transplant, which is why he had surrogates impregnated with his sperm, and why Hertz and Hammerson want Oliver dead; should the infants die, the Senator will not receive a donation and will be unfit to run as President. Smith tells Donna to leave town, before Smith contacts one of Rutledge's henchmen to request an appointment. Meeting aboard a plane, the Senator confirms Smith's suspicions, only for Smith to notice dog hair on his trousers.

Discerning the hair belongs to Duchess, and that the Senator struck a deal with Hammerson, Smith takes Rutledge hostage, only for Hertz and Hammerson to appear. Escaping from Hertz, Smith kills the Senator and leaps from the aircraft with a parachute. Killing several pursuing henchmen, Smith is shot and, after safely landing, soon collapses due to his injuries. Smith subsequently awakes in Hammerson's mansion. Hertz tortures Smith, breaking his fingers to learn where he sent Donna and Oliver. As Hertz prepares to cut Smith's eyes, Smith manages to break free and kill several thugs. Cornered and struggling to use his gun, Smith places live rounds between his broken fingers and, by detonating them using a fireplace, shoots and critically wounds Hertz. As Smith and Hertz both grab pistols and struggle to kill each other, Smith manages to fire first and kill Hertz.

Boarding a bus with Duchess, Smith soon stops at an ice-cream parlor, only to find Donna working as a waitress while watching Oliver. The film ends as a group of amateur robbers enter the parlor; his hands in bandages, Smith shoots them by using a carrot to pull the trigger.

Is there a JS SDK for the player? Can I send play/pause commands using Javascript?

The Play button doesn’t have any observable events, nor does it listen for any. Playback can only be triggered by the user clicking the button.

We’re certainly looking at creating a JS SDK; it’s a bigger project and right now we’re focussing on quickly releasing APIs to open up the general Spotify ecosystem (catalogue, playlists, etc).

None of these requests are falling on deaf ears, and we’re working hard to bring out as much functionality as we can.

So-jin, who has spent an impoverished life for 4 years preparing for her bar exam, exaggerates and says, “I spoke to my boyfriend the other day and he said I should just bring myself to him.” Her boyfriend is the CEO of a venture business who lives in a penthouse that has a swimming pool but he claims he’s not the son of a wealthy family. She claimed that she got his propose and that she didn’t need to prepare anything so she was wondering what to do.

Hyeon-mi felt jealous although she’d been solo since she was born so she butted in. “It’s stressing not being able to reveal who you are dating. I think he feels it too so he’s so good to me.” She had gone to a filming site for a favor and who does she meet but the greatest Hallyu star Jang Woo-joon. She says they share love in motels outside of the city and doesn’t mind videotaping their love-making to make up for the short time they have. She stresses that they had to break up as they could never be official or public and the three of them forget about Seon-hee.

The film begins when two North Korean soldiers are killed in the DMZ at a North Korean border house, before Sergeant Lee Soo-hyeok (Lee Byung-hun), a South Korean soldier on border duties, attempts to flee back to the South Korean side. The southern troops rescue him while the gunfire erupts and, two days later, the fragile relationship between the two Koreas now relies on a special investigation conducted by Swiss Army Major Sophie E. Jean (Lee Young-ae) on behalf of the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission.

As Sergeant Lee Soo-hyeok has confessed to the shootings, Sophie investigates why the two Koreas have contradicting accounts of events; Soo-hyeok's states he was knocked out and kidnapped while relieving himself and, waking tied up in the North Korean border house, secretly freed himself and shot three North Korean soldiers, leaving two dead. However, when asking the North Korean survivor, Sergeant Oh Kyeong-pil (Song Kang-ho), he states Soo-Hyeok barged into the border house and shot everyone before retreating when the wounded Kyeong-pil returned fire.

The autopsy report shows that one soldier, Jeong Woo-jin (Shin Ha-kyun), was shot eight times repeatedly, indicating a grudge was held; additionally, a single bullet is not accounted for. Over the course of the investigation, witness Private First Class Nam Sung-shik (Kim Tae-woo) attempts suicide by jumping out of the window of the interrogation room, and Sophie deduces that he, along with the surviving soldiers and Woo-jin, held a mutual friendship.

Explained through flashbacks it is shown that Soo-hyeok was on patrol with other soldiers, only to get lost on the North Korean side and to partially trip a mine; found by Kyeong-pil and Woo-jin, the two deactivate the mine, which later prompts Soo-hyeok to throw written messages over the border to maintain contact. Eventually inviting Soo-hyeok across the border, the three become a group of friends that soon includes Sung-shik, with the four agreeing to leave politics out of their friendship so to remain loyal to their own country.

As tensions rise between the North and South, Soo-hyeok and Sung-shik return to the North to say goodbye and celebrate Woo-jin's birthday, only to be discovered by a commanding officer from the North and resulting in a Mexican Standoff. Despite Woo-jin panicking and betraying his friends, Kyeong-pil convinces Woo-jin, Soo-hyeok and the officer to lower their weapons, only for Sung-shik to panic and shoot the commanding officer when he reaches for his radio; when Woo-jin draws his gun again, Sung-shik kills him, before shooting his corpse several times out of anger. Kyeong-pil persuades Sung-shik to lay down the gun and for the two to flee with a false alibi of being kidnapped, before throwing away the evidence that he and Woo-jin were fraternizing with Southern soldiers. After shooting Kyeong-pil to complete his alibi, Sung-shik and Soo-hyeok flee across the border, with the former getting past unseen; since Soo-hyeok has a wounded leg from the firefight, he is the only soldier seen.

Sophie, now discharged as her father was discovered to have North Korean ties during Korean War and thus making her non-neutral, unofficially confirms events with Kyeong-pil and then Soo-hyeok; she finds that the missing bullet was lodged in the evidence thrown away by Kyeong-pil, but cannot figure out who really shot Woo-jin due to a remaining inconsistency in their stories. Sophie hugs Soo-hyeok and wishes him well, only for Soo-hyeok to steal an officer's pistol before committing suicide. It is revealed Soo-hyeok shot Woo-jin, and he committed suicide out of guilt for Woo-jin's death and Sung-shik's suicide attempt. The film concludes with a photograph of the joint security area that accidentally contains all four soldiers.

The film opens with Lee Sang-woo (Yoo Ji-tae) chasing down his grandmother (Park Sung-hee), who suffers from dementia and has a compulsion to go to the train station to wait for her late husband, a conductor, to get off of work. Sang-woo lives with her and his father (Park In-hwan), with frequent visits from his aunt (Shin Shin-ae), and the whole family makes it known that they believe it’s time for him to get married. This is a topic he avoids.

Sang-woo works as a recording engineer and he is sent by his studio to help a radio show producer in Gangwon Province, Han Eun-soo (Lee Young-ae), record nature sounds for her show. Despite some immediate miscommunication, Eun-soo finds Sang-woo attractive enough to start a relationship with him. However, the divorced Eun-soo becomes uncomfortable with the naive Sang-woo’s increasing seriousness with their relationship and we watch as fear and reluctance break them apart.

The story is actually fairly simple and many of the scenes in One Fine Spring Day are more demonstrative than built upon conflict, so that it remains compelling is quite surprising. However, upon examination, the reason why the film works so well despite its simple plot is that the characters are actually realized at considerable depth and the conflicts they have with each other, as well as internally, are built upon this characterization.

For example, the fact that Sang-woo has a supportive family and their pressuring him to marry plays into the way he relates to Eun-soo, especially in his willingness to become more serious. Meanwhile, Eun-soo’s lack of close family or friends, as well as her status as a (probably older) divorcee informs her reluctance and hesitation with Sang-woo once Sang-woo gets serious. But this also affects her ephemeral playing with idea of commitment, like in a scene when she spots a couple burial mounds in the countryside and notes to Sang-woo that it would be nice to be buried together with him like that.

This is of course further helped by the performances. Yoo Ji-tae’s warm, boyish looks are perfectly fit for Sang-woo’s naive nice-guy and it is perhaps one of the most appropriate roles I’ve seen him cast in. In contrast, Lee Young-ae manages to carry layers of hurt even behind her smiles and plays the more experienced Eun-soo well, the two of them together having surprisingly excellent chemistry, both in romance and in conflict.

The real star of the show, however, is Hur. With his cinematographer, Kim Hyung-koo, Hur puts together a series of immersive mise-en-scènes for Sang-woo and Eun-soo to inhabit. Early scenes of the pair in a bamboo forest and a temple never exude overt romanticism, but in their sheer observation of nature and thoughtful composition, convey the kind of sensory beauty under which two people might find themselves feeling romantic.

Furthermore, with Sang-woo and Eun-soo in the business of recording sound, it only makes sense that One Fine Spring Day feature some impressive sound design and it does. With so many moments of the two would-be, then actual lovers listening to the sounds of nature and civilization, the film makes it easy to get caught up with them as well as the little moments when they listen to each other in recording. The only detraction that I can point to in the final mix is the score. With so much beauty in the sound design, when the acoustic guitar-based score intrudes into those moments of aural observation, it simply is distracting and almost appears heavy-handed in a film that could otherwise boast no such bluntness. It’s a jarring contrast.

The subtlety of the film might be demanding for audiences that need more immediate gratification, but with Hur’s nuanced and naturalistic observation of romance and its dissolution, it’s easy to transcend the need for typical plot points to move you along. As One Fine Spring Day demonstrates, demonstrates, the series of moments that linger in our memories–whether memories of love or hurt–and what drives those moments in the characters are story enough. In that sense, One Fine Spring Day, through its thoughtful play of backstory and observation, manages an atypically compelling tale.

And perhaps that’s what Korean film critics were noticing when they gave One Fine Spring Day a handful of awards the following year. That’s not to say that the film is for everyone: like Christmas in August, One Fine Spring Day does move slowly and is content to work within the boundaries of subtle storytelling. Attentive and patient viewers will be able to get the most from this film, but because of the subject matter, I think anyone with a history of heartache might find something in One Fine Spring Day to appreciate. Or just watch for the enchanting direction and sound design. 9/10.

Note: While not as popular as its predecessor, One Fine Spring Day, did manage to get home video releases in Korea, Japan, Hong Kong and some Southeast Asian countries. Of these, it appears that Korean, Japanese and Thai releases are still widely available, with the Korean edition boasting a Blu Ray version.

Hyang, a student abroad in the States, remained in Algeria which doesn't have diplomatic relationship with Korea because she is falsely charged for smuggling when she was travelling the Sahara. When she called upon the police, Hyang meets an oriental man who she encountered in the hotel by chance.
He is Han Seung-Yeob, a North Korean diplomat who is called there due to the police's misunderstanding. Seung-Yeob sets Hyang at ease because she is nervous about whether she is given to North Korea. Also he asks the police for an air ticket to France by using bribery and introduces his only local friend Mohamed to Hyang. Then he leaves her. As 3 weeks passes, however, Hyang can't get the ticket so she gets to stay at Mano's house on the condition that she helps Mano's daughter in English lessons. Mano is the owner of a restaurant where Mohamed works. But as Mano tries to rape her, Hyang runs out of there. Without hope to go back to her home country, Hyang narrowly earns her daily bread working as a clerk of a souvenir shop when Seung-Yeob comes to her. Seung-Yeob tries to make her escape by using a smuggling car which crosses the border after he discusses with Mohamed.

A Christian musical procession waits outside a prison for Lee Geum-ja (Lee Young-ae), a recently reformed female prisoner, who had been convicted of murdering a young schoolboy, Won-mo. The case, a national sensation because of her young age at the time of the murder and innocent appearance, earns her a lengthy prison sentence, reduced because of her apparent spiritual transformation in prison and her good conduct toward other inmates, results in the nickname of the "Kind-Hearted Geum-Ja". As Lee Geum-ja emerges from prison, she immediately sidesteps the procession, intent on revenge.

Mr. Baek (Choi Min-sik) extorts the aid of Lee Geum-ja, who aided him in the kidnapping of the murdered five-year-old child. It is implied in the movie that she was not the one who committed the murder as she was not aware of the missing marble or the colour of the pillow that was used as the murder weapon. In a formal re-enactment of the crime scene she had to take a hint from the case detective to decide the correct colour pillow to use on a mannequin. Lee Geum-ja confesses to the crime by order of Mr. Baek, who kidnapped and threatened to murder her newborn daughter if she were to refuse to aid him. Inside prison, Geum-ja makes a number of friends with her angelic, maternal demeanour, donating a kidney to one inmate, tenderly caring for others and poisoning the prison bully. Once paroled, Geum-Ja immediately visits the other paroled inmates, calling in favours that include food, shelter, and weapons. She also begins work at a local pastry shop, under the tutelage of a chef who previously volunteered at the prison. Further distancing herself from her kindhearted reputation, she wears red eye shadow, provocative high-heel pumps and chronically dreams about murdering Mr. Baek.

Geum-ja researches her daughter and discovers that she was adopted by Australian parents. Jenny, now a teenager, does not speak Korean and does not initially embrace her mother. After persuading her family to allow her to return to Seoul from Sydney, Jenny follows Geum-ja around the city as she plans to kidnap Mr. Baek with the help of his wife, another ex-convict. As these events unfold, Mr. Baek, who is now a children's teacher at a local preschool, discovers that Geum-ja is released and - aware of her plans - attacks his wife and hires thugs to ambush Geum-ja and Jenny. In the ensuing battle, Geum-ja kills both thugs, while Mr. Baek falls unconscious from the drugs that were slipped into his food by his wife.

Geum-ja, eager yet hesitant to kill the unconscious Mr. Baek, discovers several children's trinkets decorating his cell phone. Remembering that his modus operandiinvolved stealing an orange marble from Won-Mo following his murder, Geum-ja realises that they are souvenirs from victims and deduces that Mr. Baek murdered other children as well. She imprisons him and contacts the detective from the Won-Mo case, and they infiltrate Mr. Baek's apartment together and discover snuff tapes of the other children that Mr. Baek murdered.

Geum-ja and the detective contact and transport the parents or surviving relatives of the missing children to an abandoned school on the outskirts of Seoul. After showing them the tapes, the group deliberates on Mr. Baek's fate, ultimately deciding to murder him collectively, with the audio of their discussion amplified for him to hear. Wearing raincoats and wielding a variety of weapons, they approach Mr. Baek individually and torture him while the last person, an emotionless grandmother, kills Baek with the scissors of her murdered grand daughter. They take a group photo, ensuring that none of them can turn in the others without implicating themselves, and then bury the corpse outside.

Geum-ja, the investigator, and the parents all converge on Geum-ja's bakery, where they eat a cake and sing a collective birthday song for their deceased children. Afterwards, Geum-ja sees the ghost of the murdered child and demands long-awaited redemption. Before she can do so, he transforms into his grown self (the age that he would have been if he had lived) and then gags her before she can repent. When Geum-ja later approaches her apartment with a cake box, she notices Jenny. They embrace before Geum-ja opens the box to reveal a white cake that resembles a block of tofu. She instructs her daughter to "live white", as pure as tofu. Jenny tastes the cake and says Geum-ja should live even more purely. As they stare up into the snowy sky, Geum-ja weeps and sobs uncontrollably, her face buried in the white cake, while Jenny hugs her.
