LAS VEGAS: Nebraska's 17-year-old Teresa Scanlan was named Miss America Saturday becoming the youngest winner ever in the pageant's history after a night of being judged for poise, talent, fitness and knowledge.
Scanlan wowed the judges wearing a stunning white evening gown and tickling the ivories on piano with rousing rendition of "White Water Chopped Sticks" in the talent competition.
In the final question, she was asked about the leaking of confidential government information by website WikiLeaks and whether US security or the people's right to know sensitive information was more important.
Scanlan saw the leaks as a matter of espionage and said: "When it comes to the security of our nation, we have to focus on security first and then people's right to know ... We can't let things like that happen, and they must be handled properly, and I think that was the case."
The first runner-up, who will take Miss America's place in the case Scanlan can't perform her new role, was Miss Arkansas Alyse Eady.
Among other noteworthy contestants was Miss Delaware, Kayla Martell, who made it into the semifinals. Martell suffers from a disease, alopecia areata, that caused her to lose all her hair at age 10, and she competed in a wig.
This year marked the 90th pageant in the history of Miss America. The organization runs achievement programs and is a major provider of scholarship assistance for young women. In 2010, the group and its state and local affiliates helped give out more than $45 million in cash and scholarship assistance.

Fifty-three women were chosen from states and territories across the country in local contests before they headed to Las Vegas and the final pageant Saturday.
As Miss America, Scanlan will take the next year to travel the United States and raise awareness about eating disorders.
Miss America 2010, Caressa Cameron from Virginia, 22, was a goodwill ambassador for the Children's Miracle Network, and she spent the year helping raise awareness for HIV/AIDS.
In the week ahead of Saturday's competition, contestants were judged in preliminary events for evening wear, fitness and swimsuits and answer questions in an interview.
From those events, 11 semifinalists were chosen to compete Saturday night. Joining them were four other contestants -- two picked by online voting and two others by the remaining young women in the pageant.
The 15 semifinalists were narrowed Saturday in contests that again include evening wear, fitness and swimsuits, talent and a final on-stage question for the top five women. Then, the top five were ranked to get to the new Miss America.
This year, seven panelists judged contestants in the final round as they answered their question in 20 seconds. The judges -- including TV talk show co-host Joy Behar, "Dancing With the Stars" professional dancer Tony Dovolani, and "Desperate Housewives" creator Marc Cherry, among others -- watched for confidence, knowledge and quick thinking in formulating an answer.
Joining Miss Nebraska and Arkansas among the five finalists were women from Hawaii, Washington and Oklahoma.
The show included a rousing opening musical number by all 53 contestants, and it was hosted by TV personalities Brooke Burke and Chris Harrison.

'Little Fockers' tops North American box office

LOS ANGELES: "Little Fockers," the third in a series of Ben Stiller comedies playing on the nightmare in-laws theme, topped the Christmas weekend box office in North America, preliminary data showed Sunday.

Despite a lukewarm response from critics, the flick grossed 34 million dollars over the three-day weekend, according to industry tracker Exhibitor Relations.

Oscar-winning brothers Joel and Ethan Coen came in second with their remake of the John Wayne western "True Grit."

Jeff Bridges plays drunken, hard-nosed US Marshal "Rooster" Cogburn in the new version of the 1969 classic, which took in 25.6 million dollars, giving the Coen brothers their best ever opening.

Bridges also stars in last weekend's top film -- "TRON: Legacy" -- which captured 20.1 million dollars in ticket sales in its second weekend, slipping down to third in the rankings.

The sequel to the 1982 sci-fi cult hit stars 61-year-old Oscar-winner Bridges appearing opposite a computer-generated version of his younger self from the original movie.

The original "TRON" -- about a hacker transported into a computer game world -- was one of the first-ever computer animated films. It did well at the box office and became a cult for a generation of budding sci-fi fans.

In fourth spot was "Voyage of the Dawn Treader," the third installment in the "The Chronicles of Narnia" series based on the classic C.S. Lewis children's books. It earned 10.8 million dollars.

"Yogi Bear," a blend of 3D and live-action fun, notched up 8.8 million dollars in earnings ahead of Mark Wahlberg's boxing drama "The Fighter," in sixth place with 8.5 million.

Jack Black 3D comedy "Gulliver's Travels," based on Jonathan Swift's 1726 novel about a voyage to the Lilliput kingdom of tiny people, opened in a disappointing seventh place, with 7.2 million in ticket sales.

Ballet thriller "Black Swan," starring Natalie Portman as a dancer in a New York company exploring the dark sides of the industry and her own sensuality, dropped down a notch to eighth. It made 8.38 million dollars.

In ninth place, the animated Disney fable "Tangled" about long-haired Princess Rapunzel netted 6.5 million dollars, notching up a total of 143.8 million over its five weeks in theaters.

Rounding out the top 10 was romantic thriller "The Tourist," starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. It earned 5.7 million.

British historical drama "The King's Speech," featuring Colin Firth as a stuttering King George VI who is helped to overcome his impediment with the help of an eccentric speech therapist played by Geoffrey Rush, earned 4.6 million in a limited showing in 700 theaters.

WikiLeaks domain 'killed'

Whistle-blowing website WikiLeaks has gone off-line after the U.S. company which hosts its domain name withdrew its support and caused the website to disappear into obscurity.

Everydns.net cut the wikileaks.org domain off at 3am GMT on Friday (10pm EST on Thursday) after a number of unknown hackers persistently attacked the controversial intelligence site using "distributed denial of service" (DDOS) methods. According to the internet domain firm, the cyber attack affected other everydns.net customers and forced the company to take the wikileaks.org domain off-line after giving WikiLeaks 24 hours of notice.

Access to the WikiLeaks site will not be possible until it gets a new DNS service. DNS services facilitate the translation of domain names (e.g. wikileaks.org) to numeric internet IP addresses - a critical requirement for accessing any website.

WikiLeaks issued a tweet on social networking site Twitter three hours after the support for its domain name was removed, stating: "WikiLeaks,org domain killed by US everydns.net after claimed mass attacks KEEP US STRONG https://donations.datacell.com/".

Google to buy NY office building for $1.8 billion

Google signed a contract to buy its New York office building for about $1.8 billion, according to a person with knowledge of the agreement.

The sale probably will close by the end of the year, said the person, who asked not to be named because the deal hasn't been made public. Google will expand beyond the 550,000 square feet it currently occupies in the building, the person said.

Aaron Zamost, a spokesman for the Mountain View company, declined to comment.

The sale is the biggest transaction for a single building in the United States this year, according to Real Capital Analytics Inc., a real estate research firm. The deal signals strong demand for Manhattan property as the market recovers, said Dan Fasulo, a Real Capital managing director.

"You can't get a stronger vote of confidence for the strength of the New York office market," Fasulo said. "When one of the most prestigious modern corporations makes a bet on your marketplace, it's not just a bet on your real estate, but in New York as a place to retain and attract the best talent."

The building at 111 Eighth Avenue takes up an entire block between West 15th and 16th streets in the Chelsea section of Manhattan, south of Midtown. The former industrial warehouse has 2.94 million square feet, according to Real Capital. At that size, it has more floor space than the Empire State Building.

The price comes to about $600 a square foot. That's almost the $636 a square foot SL Green Realty Corp. paid in May for 600 Lexington Ave., a 94-percent-occupied office tower in midtown Manhattan, the nation's most expensive office leasing area, Real Capital's data show.

"They can afford to pay more for this building because they're already the occupant," said Ben Thypin, Real Capital senior market analyst. "A third party that wasn't already a tenant might not have been able, actually definitely wasn't able, to bid as high as they were."

The 18-story property sits near the Meatpacking District, which has seen a surge of high-end residential, retail and hotel development in the past decade, including an Apple store and the Standard Hotel.

The sellers are Jamestown, a real estate investment firm; Taconic Investment Partners; and the New York State Common Retirement Fund.

The Wall Street Journal reported the agreement Thursday.

Angelina Jolie is the target of more criticism over her feature directorial debut, a love story set during the Bosnian War.

The actress -- who recently cut short the film's shoot after rumors that it portrayed a relationship between a rapist and his victim sparked protests -- was called "ignorant" on Monday by a group of women who were victims of sexual violence during the 1990s war, the AFP reported.

In a letter to the United Nations refugee agency, for which Jolie is a goodwill ambassador, the Women Victims of War said its members are "deeply concerned about the movie."

"Angelina Jolie's ignorant attitude towards victims says enough about the scenario and gives us the right to continue having doubts about it," the letter read.

After rumors of the rapist love story line surfaced in October, a group of Bosnian War rape victims pressured city officials to withdraw Jolie's filming permit.

The rumors proved to be untrue, and after the country's minister of culture read the script -- about a Bosnian woman who falls in love with a Serb man -- the permit was reinstated. However, Jolie earlier this month cut the shooting schedule from 10 days to three and decided to film some of the scenes originally planned for Bosnia in Hungary instead.

At the time, Jolie said she wanted to meet with the groups that complained to clear up any misunderstanding, but no meeting ever transpired.

"We have insisted to meet Angelina Jolie since we don't want to be wrongly presented in the world ... Our voices are worthwhile and we should have got much more respect," the WVW letter read.

"Angelina made a big mistake. We feel that she did not act like a real UNHCR ambassador and we believe that she has no more credibility to remain the ambassador," the letter concluded.

EMMA WATSON is proving that her new hairstyle isn't the only change post Harry Potter.

Actress Emma Watson, who has modelled for Burberry, is looking to expand her fashion empire by teaming up with designer Alberta Ferretti for a new organic clothing range.

The 20-year-old is already a creative consultant for Fair Trade fashion brand People Tree and the star has now confirmed that she is working on a new project with Ferretti.

The star revealed that the Italian style guru approached with an idea for an organic collection after seeing her People Tree range.

Watson said: "We are doing an organic clothing range, I can't reveal the name yet but there will be more information soon.

"(Ferretti) wrote to me and said, 'I saw what you did with People Tree and I think it's a great idea and will you do something with me?'"

She also explains that she will not be getting paid for her work with the designer, adding: "I will put it out there that I will work for anyone for free if they are prepared to make their clothing fair trade organic."

The collection is expected next year.
