More than 25 international celebrities including Paula Abdul, actor David Tennant, acclaimed writer Neil Gaiman, Vampire Diaries’ star Kat Graham, UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, supermodel and former refugee, Alek Wek have joined the UN Refugee Agency’s (UNHCR) World Refugee Day ‘1 family’ campaign to expose the devastating impact of war on families.

The campaign aims to expose the devastating impact of war on families and mobilise public support and solidarity for those affected, including refugees from the Syria crisis.

“Somewhere, right now, a family is being torn apart by war, children are being separated from their parents, lives and homes are being destroyed. One family torn apart by war is too many” said Kat Graham, star of Vampire Diaries.

When families are forced to flee their homes they may have only a minute to escape. On World Refugee Day, UNHCR is asking the public to step into the shoes of a refugee – if only for a moment – by contemplating what they would take if faced with this life-changing decision.

Anyone can upload a photo of themselves with their chosen object, or tweet about it through the World Refugee Day website. The photos of celebrities, the public and refugees alike are posted on a campaign Pinterest board that is both massive – and moving.

Amongst the celebrities supporting the campaign, a number are former refugees themselves – as is the case for best-selling author Khaled Hosseini, who added this caption to his photo, “My family and I left Afghanistan in 1976 and we were never able to go back because of the war. This watch was given to me by my father when I was 13 and it’s my most prized possession because it represents the oldest surviving relic of my childhood”.

AnnaLynne McCord was all smiles as she helped host the event. She stated that she was “a HUGE supporter” of the foundation and was “absolutely delighted and honored” to take part in the event. She helped raise thousands of dollars for the charity through the means of an auction, and was “very proud” with the overall turnout.

The Somaly Mam Foundation is a nonprofit organization committed to ending modern slavery and empowering its survivors as part of the solution. Human trafficking, a multi-billion dollar industry, is the fastest growing criminal enterprise in the world. With an estimated two million women and children sold into sexual slavery each year, it is a global crisis that must be stopped.

Ice-T Narrates Gun Control Film Focusing On Civil Rights

Dead Patriot Films presents “Assaulted: Civil Rights Under Fire” – a 79-minute, PG-13 documentary narrated by Ice-T that brings audiences to the center of the controversy over an issue that is dividing our nation – gun control.

The film takes a step back from the public discourse on limiting magazine capacity and defining assault rifles. Instead, “Assaulted” offers a unique historical perspective on the Second Amendment’s significance, taking a critical and objective look at the current gun laws, and the effect on civil rights and liberty.

Created by Emmy winning producer and writer Kris Koenig (“400 Years of the Telescope,” the upcoming “Fight for Space”) and produced by Eric Katzenberg (“Secrets of Navy SEALS,” “American Guns”), the film is narrated by critically acclaimed rapper and actor Ice-T (“Something from Nothing: The Art of Rap,” “Law and Order: SVU”).

“The Second Amendment is so simple,” says Ted Nugent. “It’s an absolute tragedy that the question exists. What does it mean? Keep and bear arms means they’re mine. You can’t have them. I’ve got some on me right now. And they’re loaded!”

With the original intention of empowering a citizenry to defend themselves against a corrupt or tyrannical government, the concept behind the Second Amendment may seem farfetched today. Or does it? “Assaulted” weaves together such narrative threads as the post-World War II Battle of Athens and the Deacons for Defense of the Jim Crow era with more recent events, including the abandonment of Koreatown during the Rodney King Riots and the heavy-handed action taken by officials during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Big Bang Theory's Mayim Bialik Speaks At STEM Conference

Texas Instruments and its brand ambassador – actress and neuroscientist Mayim Bialik – are joining 2,000 STEM leaders and visionaries in business, education and government at the U.S. News STEM Solutions National Conference in Austin, from June 17-19 at the Austin Convention Center.

Together they will share ideas and solutions to solve the challenge of filling the gap for a competitive STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) workforce by preparing today’s students to excel in math and science.

TI, a lead sponsor of the conference, will demonstrate how math and science technology, strong professional development for educators and classroom activities that showcase real-world applications of science and math concepts are increasing student achievement in these subjects and preparing them to pursue higher education and careers in STEM fields.

Bialik, who plays the loveably geeky neurobiologist Amy Farrah Fowler on the hit TV comedy “The Big Bang Theory,” will deliver the keynote remarks and present the much-anticipated U.S. News & World Report Best High Schools for STEM rankings at the first general session on Tuesday, June 18. Texas Instruments Education Technology President Melendy Lovett will kick off a panel discussion on helping school districts choose the right technology to further student STEM skills June 19 at 10 a.m.

UNICEF And Nelson Mandela Foundation Kick Off Fundraising Drive

UNICEF, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Peter Krämer Foundation have kicked off a new fundraising drive to raise US$80 million to help Africa’s girls, orphans, children living in extreme poverty and other vulnerable children go to school and get a quality education.

The partners signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in New York, to expand Schools for Africa which has, to date, helped benefit 21 million children. The new phase aims to raise US$80 million between 2014 – 2017 to help the most vulnerable children in Angola, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Guinea Bissau, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

“School attendance and quality learning remain a challenge for millions of children in Africa who live in communities where schools have difficulties in improving learning,” said Dr. Nicholas Alipui, UNICEF Director of Programmes. “In addition, these children must cope with such daily hardships as poverty and the need to work. The partnership focuses on the most marginalized, giving millions a chance for a better life.”

When it started in 2004, Schools for Africa aimed to raise US$50 million by 2008 to help over four million children in six countries. It reached its goal one year early. In the second phase, 2010 – 2013, the initiative added five more countries. So far, Schools for Africa has raised more than US$164 million for education programmes. Building on its success, Phase III, launched today, added two more countries —Guinea Bissau and Sierra Leone.

“Nelson Mandela believes that education is the strongest weapon available to change any society for the better,” said Mr. Sello Hatang, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation. “This next milestone of Schools for Africa brings his dream of education for all closer.”

The initiative has helped rebuild schools, provide safe drinking water and sanitation facilities, immunization and health checks for children, school meals and train teachers in some of the most remote areas. The initiative also supports the work of the Nelson Mandela Institute (NMI) in Eastern Cape which aims to improve access to quality education in rural areas through research, teacher and leadership development, community mobilization and through building strong and lasting public institutions.

The NMI introduced Magic Classrooms – an innovative approach intended to create an environment that makes learning and teaching fun. There are now more than 70 vibrant and colourful Magic Classrooms for children between 6 and 9 years of age in Qunu, Mqanduli and Bizana in Eastern Cape.

The need for funding is crucial because, despite the significant progress in education over the past decade, according to data released last week by the Education for All (EFA) Global Monitoring Report, of the 57 million children primary-school-age out of school in 2011, almost 30 million were in sub-Saharan Africa. The region also has the highest out-of-school rate of all regions. More than one in five primary school-age children have either never attended school or left before completing the last grade of primary education.

“When all children have access to a quality education rooted in human rights and gender equality, it creates a ripple effect of opportunity that influences generations to come,” said Mr. Peter Krämer, Chairperson of the Peter Krämer Foundation, partner and key donor of the initiative.

The signing of the MoU further strengthens the existing and continued partnership and support from major individual, corporate and foundation donors such as, Gucci, IKEA Foundation, Montblanc, Starwood Hotels & Resorts and many others.

Danny Boyle And Bill Gates Attend Big IF In Hyde Park

As tens of thousands of people gathered at London’s Hyde Park for the Big IF on Saturday, June 8, world leaders at the Hunger Summit a few miles away pledged money that will save 1.7 million children’s lives.

In a major success for the Enough Food for Everyone IF campaign – which has seen more than 200 organisations join together – rich countries committed more than $4 billion to tackle hunger and malnutrition when world leaders met at the Gobal Hunger Summit.

And 45,000 people gathered in London’s Hyde Park to demand action to tackle the causes of hunger.

At the Big IF rally, Danny Boyle – Artistic Director of London 2012 – made an impassioned plea for G8 leaders to end world hunger. He was joined on stage by philanthropist Bill Gates. The crowd also heard messages of support from David Beckham and Eddie Izzard.

Celebrities and the public alike helped to create a huge visual petition at the event to demonstrate the scale of public support for the IF campaign. The petition was made up of 250,000 spinning flowers, their petals representing the millions of children who die because of malnutrition each year – lives that can be saved if world leaders take action at the G8.

The focus of the IF campaign now moves to the G8 Summit in Northern Ireland on 17-18 June and the issue of global tax dodging by some multinational companies. Every year the world’s poorest countries lose billions in tax revenues – money that could spent to feed their children and their families.

This is my dream – it’s a passionate dream – that in Olympics to come there will be no one dying of hunger in any of the countries whose wonderful flags wave in the wind. And it is a fight that will be won.

“We expect our government and other world leaders to fight with all the energy and cunning and determination of Chris Hoy and Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis and Bradley Wiggins – to fight and fight and fight to end hunger until they win," he added.

Barbara Bush Foundation Announces Letter Contest Winners

To celebrate Father’s Day weekend, the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy proudly announces the winners of the first annual Devotedly, Dad Letter contest.

The foundation asked fathers and grandfathers to write letters to their children and grandchildren about the importance of literacy in their lives.

The foundation received hundreds of letters from across the country and selected two winners from almost every state. The winners will receive an autographed copy of President George H.W. Bush's book All the Best, My Life in Letters and Other Writings and a pair of the president’s signature colorful socks.

“Literacy starts at home. We at the foundation encourage parents and grandparents to give the gift of reading and writing to their families,” stated Liza McFadden, Executive Director of the Barbara Bush Foundation. “The fathers and grandfathers who submitted letters shared inspirational stories of their love of literacy, which is essential in building stronger families and communities.”

Illiteracy is a growing crisis in the United States. Over 33 million adults can not read or write. The foundation is committed to ending illiteracy. The PSA, entitled “I Am My Own Secret Weapon,” is designed to increase awareness about cancer immunotherapy, which mobilizes our immune systems to fight cancer.

One in two men and one in three women will get some form of cancer in their lifetimes, and every day, nearly 1,600 Americans die from cancer. This debilitating disease can often make people feel like they are no longer in control of their bodies. Through this PSA, SU2C and CRI increase awareness of the need to support more research on immune-based cancer treatments.

“Cancer research is extremely important to me,” said two-time Emmy Award nominee Harmon. “I don’t know anyone who hasn’t been affected by cancer in some way or another. I’m here today to highlight the unbelievable work that CRI and SU2C are doing to advance the field of cancer immunology.”

Mark Harmon has starred as Leroy Jethro “Gibbs” in the hit CBS series NCIS for 10 years. He has been nominated for two Emmys, four Golden Globes, two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two People’s Choice Awards for roles he has played throughout his career including The West Wing, Chicago Hope and NCIS.

“The research that CRI and SU2C are doing shows us that with the help of immunotherapy, our bodies’ own natural defenses can fight cancer,” added Harmon. “We’ve all seen people suffer through different kinds of treatments for this disease but these advances in immunotherapy have the potential to significantly change cancer treatment as we know it. Koch Center for Applied Research of Genitourinary Cancers at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, and Antoni Ribas, M.D., Ph.D., of the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, and member of the Eli and Edythe Broad Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), is exploring “Immunologic Checkpoint Blockade and Adoptive Cell Transfer in Cancer Therapy.” Scientists on this Dream Team represent eight institutions: MD Anderson Cancer Center, UCLA, The Johns Hopkins University, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, California Institute of Technology, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and the Netherlands Cancer Institute.

From Make-A-Wish.org.uk: For 12 year old Elijah tennis isn’t just a hobby; it’s helped him to take his mind off hospital appointments and chemotherapy since being diagnosed with cancer. So when Make-A-Wish told him his wish to meet his tennis idol Andy Murray was being granted, he was thrilled!

Elijah, who met Andy at Queen’s Club during the Aegon Championships, was not only given the opportunity to watch Andy train… he also got to actually play with the No. 2 seed! He was then introduced to Andy’s close friend, Ross Hutchins, who himself is battling Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, before they took their seats to watch the centre court action.

Elijah, who is from London, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) in February 2010 following a lung scan and bone marrow test. He endured a course of intensive chemotherapy followed by maintenance chemotherapy, which he finished last month. Elijah plays tennis frequently with a local club but had to stop for a while during treatment which his Mum, Catherine, described as very frustrating for him, as he dreams of one day becoming a professional tennis player.

She said: “When we found out that Elijah had ALL I didn’t want to believe it – when you hear the word ‘cancer’ you become very frightened. Although the treatment stopped him playing as much, tennis has really helped to take his mind off everything that he’s had to go through.”

Elijah’s Dad, Tito, who accompanied Elijah, said: “I’m speechless for all the efforts that have been put into making my son’s wish a reality. Elijah was amazed, nervous and thrilled – so many emotions flared up in such a short time that Elijah was in mute mode for a second! But when Andy approached him with such kindness it broke the ice and it all went marvellously.”

After meeting Andy Elijah said: “I’m really, really, really happy; it’s been amazing!”

Andy Murray said: “It was a real pleasure to meet Elijah who is a keen and talented young tennis player. Despite going through a tough few years it’s clear he’s remained very dedicated. We had a knock-up on the practice court and he certainly put me through my paces!”

Stars Make A Stand Against Nuclear Weapons

A group of celebrities is making a stand against nuclear weapons – and they need your support.

President Obama will meet with President Putin on the side of the June 17-18 G-8 Summit in Northern Ireland, with nuclear weapons on the agenda. In the lead-up to this critical decision point, an eminent group of artists – including Alec Baldwin, John Cusack, Matt Damon, Robert De Niro, Danny DeVito, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, Whoopi Goldberg, Zoe Kravitz, Martin Sheen, Christoph Waltz and Naomi Watts – issued a stirring call for a world without nuclear weapons in a powerful new video released by Global Zero.

The video is part of an international campaign urging President Obama to set the world’s course to zero nuclear weapons by negotiating further cuts in the massive U.S.-Russian Cold War stockpiles and bringing other leading nuclear powers into international nuclear arms negotiations for the first time in history.

As part of these efforts, Global Zero delivered to the White House a letter to President Obama from approximately 75 former prime ministers, foreign and defense ministers and military commanders, an official declaration recently adopted by the European Parliament endorsing Global Zero’s plan to eliminate nuclear weapons, and a global grassroots petition – all urging Obama to set the world’s course to zero nuclear weapons. Over the last several weeks, a host of artists, musicians and bands have promoted the campaign on social media, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Paul McCartney, Tom Morello, Yoko Ono, Serj Tankian, Pearl Jam and R.E.M., among many others.

“The message from national security experts and citizens around the world is clear: the only way to eliminate the global nuclear danger is to eliminate all nuclear weapons,” said Michael Douglas. “It’s time to set the world’s course to zero.”

“Nuclear weapons are obsolete relics of the Cold War, they do not address today’s security threats, and they cost $1 trillion per decade globally,” said Morgan Freeman. “It’s time we get rid of them.”

“To set the world’s course to zero nuclear weapons, President Obama will have to go beyond the bilateral process President Reagan started of U.S.-Soviet/Russian arms reductions and bring the other leading nuclear powers into international arms negotiations for the first time in history,” said Global Zero Co-Founder Matt Brown.

Starting with President Reagan, whose aim was “the total elimination one day of nuclear weapons from the face of the Earth” and who began the process of arms reductions, the Global Zero position has become mainstream – and those who oppose it increasingly outside the mainstream. Shakira Teams With Hard Rock International To Benefit Charity

On Tuesday, June 11, 2013, Colombian pop sensation and current coach on NBC’s The Voice, Shakira, met with Hard Rock to donate items from her personal closet to the brand’s legendary collection, while on set of the hit talent competition series.

Among the new items added to Hard Rock’s permanent collection are the sparkling gold stage outfit worn by Shakira during her 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards performance and the festive tank top and black fringe skirt she rocked in the music video for the official 2010 FIFA World Cup song, “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa).”

To commemorate the donation and honor Shakira’s generous ongoing commitment to those in need, Hard Rock donated more than $185,000 to the singer’s Fundación Pies Descalzos in support of the organization’s new school project in Cartagena, Colombia. Throughout the brand’s history, Hard Rock has raised more than 1 million dollars in funding for Shakira’s non-profit organization and its previous school construction initiatives.

“I am honored to share these one-of-a-kind pieces from my closet with Hard Rock, a brand that has helped support my Fundación Pies Descalzos for many years,” said Shakira. “With Hard Rock’s generous contributions to the foundation through this donation and past projects, we have significantly helped transform the lives of thousands of Colombian children and communities in need.”

Founded by Shakira in 1997, Fundación Pies Descalzos is devoted to providing higher education and support for Colombian children and community inhabitants whose lives have been displaced by violence and poverty. The non-profit organization is in the process of building its sixth Pies Descalzos School in Cartagena, which is projected to directly benefit 1,700 students and 34,000 parents and community members upon its completion. Jake T. Austin And Staples For Students Help Kids In Need

This summer, Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) and Staples, Inc., the world’s largest office products company and second largest internet retailer, are teaming up with teen actor Jake T. Austin, for the 6th annual Staples for Students national school supply drive to help kids get the tools they need to be successful in school and achieve great futures.

Jake will be featured in the campaign’s public service announcement (PSA) now available online and airing on television and radio stations starting next month.

“I’m so excited to team up with Staples and Boys & Girls Clubs of America for this great cause,” said Jake T. Austin. “I can’t imagine starting school without the right supplies, so I’m rallying fellow teens to help make a difference in their communities by making sure students have the essential supplies they need to succeed.”

From June 30 to September 28, Staples customers can donate $1 or more at any Staples store, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting local students. Each Staples store will be matched with a local Boys & Girls Club which will receive the donation to benefit youth who attend the Club in time for the new school year. To kick-start the campaign, Staples is donating $125,000 worth of school supplies to the program this year which will be distributed to Boys & Girls Club youth in need.

Since 2008, the campaign has raised nearly $3 million for hundreds of thousands of students in need throughout the country. Past celebrity supporters have included Jordin Sparks, Ciara, Nikki Reed, the cast of Pretty Little Liars and Bella Thorne.

“It’s amazing to see teens and customers rally together each year to give back to their local communities through Staples for Students,” said Alison Corcoran, senior vice president stores and online marketing, Staples. “Working with Jake T. Austin and Boys & Girls Clubs, we can help ensure that students across the country start the year off right in the classroom.”

Teens are also encouraged to spread the word on social media. Starting in early July, they can visit the Staples for Students Facebook page where Jake will take followers through an exciting series of interactive missions to help drive donations. As missions are completed, teens will be rewarded with donations on their behalf to Boys & Girls Clubs, coupons for school supplies and opportunities to participate in exciting sweepstakes.

There are 4,000 Boys & Girls Clubs in communities nationwide serving nearly 4 million youth ages 6-18 by providing a safe and productive place for young people during the after-school timeframe. Clubs offer caring mentors and programming that help youth, many of whom come from disadvantaged circumstances, advance in the areas of education, health and wellness, and develop character and leadership skills.

“A core focus of our mission is to enable youth to be successful throughout school and follow a career or educational plan post-high school to become productive and responsible citizens,” said Kimberly Boyd, vice president, program training & youth development services for BGCA. “Partnerships and programs like the Staples for Students national school supply drive provide critical support for Clubs and youth so they have the resources needed to do well in school and create a path to a great future.”
