Nordoff Robbins To Honor Coldplay With Silver Clef Award

Nordoff Robbins is excited to announce that the incredibly successful and internationally acclaimed band, Coldplay, is to receive the Royal Albert Hall Best British Act Award at this year’s Nordoff Robbins O2 Silver Clef Awards on Friday 28 June 2013 at the London Hilton on Park Lane.

Prince Of Wales Visits Prince's Trust In Stoke

The Prince of Wales was in Stoke, UK, last week where he met with young people who have battled long-term unemployment and managed to change their lives with help from The Prince's Trust.

The Prince, who founded The Trust in 1976, met with Stoke young people as part of a visit focusing on regeneration in the city.

Lee Tams was one of the young people who met The Prince today. He faced unemployment for nine months before seeking support from The Prince’s Trust.

“It’s such an honour to meet The Prince of Wales,” said Lee. "His charity has done so much to change my life.

“I felt like I was in a black hole when I was unemployed. I was rejected for all 500 jobs I applied for – and never found out why. I often struggled to buy food and clothes, and avoided putting the heating on as I couldn’t afford my energy bills. I had nothing.

“On The Prince’s Trust Team programme, I started to believe in myself again. I know what I want to do for the first time in my life.”

The Trust’s Team programme is a 12-week personal development course. It gave Lee the skills and confidence he needed to find work, and he now has his dream job working in a residential care home for the elderly.

In Staffordshire, Team is run in partnership with Stoke-on-Trent College, which has supported 4,000 young people through the scheme since 1995. The College is the first partner to deliver 300 Team programmes with The Prince’s Trust.

Chris Callear, 20, also met HRH The Prince of Wales last week, after taking part in a Prince’s Trust scheme at Middleport Pottery to help him find a job in the construction industry.

After facing six months of unemployment, Chris has now secured a job at the Pottery thanks to the Get into Construction course, helping to regenerate the building. The scheme was run in partnership with The Prince’s Regeneration Trust, William Anelay Construction and Stoke College.

Chris said: “The Prince’s Trust has been great and there is no doubt that the Get into Construction programme turned my life around.”

He continued, “It boosted my confidence and best of all I got to have proper experience of what it is like to be on construction site. This was my favourite part as it helped me to get the job I have today.”

John O’Reilly, regional director for The Prince’s Trust in central England said: "We’re thrilled to have His Royal Highness here in Stoke today. This is the icing on the cake for our young people, who have faced huge barriers and worked so hard to turn their lives around.

“Almost one in five young people in Stoke are struggling to find a job, so that means the work of The Prince’s Trust is more important than ever.”

The Hunger Project announces the global launch of a new one-of-a-kind single performed by five-time Grammy award winner, Dionne Warwick together with X-Factor winning pop icon, Joe McElderry in time for World Hunger Day 2013 on May 28th.

Music Royalty doesn’t get much greater than the legend that is Dionne Warwick, the third most charted female artist of all time (equal with Madonna). Dionne, together with the stunningly successful young British artist Joe McElderry, is stepping up for the sustainable end of Hunger this May 2013 with the launch of a new first-of-a-kind duet, entitled ‘One World One Song’.

This spectacular anthem is launched on 27th of May as a global digital release with pre-orders available from 17th of May. Stars To Appear At National Memorial Day Concert

On the eve of Memorial Day, the 24th annual NATIONAL MEMORIAL DAY CONCERT will bring to life the moving stories of America’s servicemen and women who have given so much to preserve America’s freedoms.

The inspiring television event will pay tribute to the profound heroism of all who served during World War II, salute the valor of our Korean War veterans, and honor the sacrifices of our National Guard heroes and their families.

The multi award-winning program will be co-hosted for the eighth year by Tony Award-winner Joe Mantegna (CRIMINAL MINDS) and Emmy Award-winner Gary Sinise (CSI:NEW YORK), two acclaimed actors who have dedicated themselves to veterans causes and supporting our troops in active service. Opening the show, with a special performance of the National Anthem will be the season 12 winner of AMERICAN IDOL. The all-star line-up also includes: distinguished American leader Colin L. Powell USA (Ret.); two-time Golden Globe award-winning actor Ed Harris; DANCING WITH THE STARS finalist and classical cross-over artist Katherine Jenkins; singer-songwriter and THE VOICE finalist Chris Mann; and acclaimed Tony award-winning tenor Alfie Boe; in performance with the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of top pops conductor Jack Everly.

Author JM Coetzee: Bullfighting Is Cruelty, Not Culture

On behalf of PETA, acclaimed novelist JM Coetzee, winner of the 2003 Nobel Prize in Literature, has sent an urgent letter to the members of Spain’s Culture Committee calling on them to reject the current initiative, proposed by bullfighting aficionados, to give bullfighting legal protection as a “cultural pastime”.

In the letter, Coetzee points out that bullfighting is nothing more than a cruel relic of a bygone era.

“[Bullfighting] is a violent, bloody spectacle – a throwback to a time when people took no heed of the feelings of animals”, writes Coetzee. “Tormenting and butchering bulls for entertainment belongs in the Dark Ages – not in 21st century Spain.”

Every year, more than 40,000 bulls are slaughtered during Spanish bullfights. In a typical bullfight, lances are driven into a bull’s back and neck muscles, resulting in significant blood loss. Banderillas – bright sticks with harpoon points – are then stabbed into the bull’s back. The dying animal is finally stabbed to death. Sometimes the bulls are paralysed – but still conscious – as they are chained by their horns and dragged out of the arena. Seventy-six per cent of Spaniards say that they have no interest in this barbaric ritual, and the industry survives only because of subsidies from Spanish and EU taxpayers. Any move to protect bullfighting would be a huge step backwards.

This isn’t the first time that Coetzee has spoken out against animal abuse. He also worked with PETA Asia in its fight to end the systematic abuse of baby elephants in Thailand and asked the EU to implement a ban on bullfighting throughout Europe.

Vanessa Hudgens To Lead The Electric Run For Smile Train

Electric Run, the country’s brightest and most outrageous 5K run/walk, is coming to Los Angeles on Friday, May 24th with actress Vanessa Hudgens leading the pack through a technicolor wonderland weaving throughout Home Depot Center in Carson.

Electric Run LA will partner with Smile Train, donating a portion of proceeds to the nonprofit that brings smiles to children’s faces by providing a child born with a cleft the same opportunities in life as a child born without a cleft.

Electric Run is like no other run: the original spectacular of its kind has attracted over 100,000 Day-Glo clad participants, including Carmen Electra and Seth Rogan, to its events. The all-ages, nighttime event features premier musical acts, an energized crowd and over 1 million watts of mesmerizing light art installations, such as glowing neon trees, rainbow-hued tunnels and lit-up lakes.

Mark Wahlberg Leads Celebrity Movement To Encourage Teens To Graduate‏

The Taco Bell Foundation for Teens, in partnership with Get Schooled, today announced the launch of Graduate for Más, a program challenging teens to make a personal commitment to graduate high school.

Actor and philanthropist Mark Wahlberg, who did not finish high school himself, also announced today his support of the program.

“I grew up without the support and resources I needed to stay motivated, so graduation was the last thing on my mind,” said Wahlberg. “Today, I see students across the country, struggling under the same circumstances, and I know I’m in a position to help. That’s why I’m demonstrating my personal commitment to education by earning my high school diploma.”

Wahlberg and his Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation recently joined the Taco Bell Foundation for Teens, Get Schooled and MTV News executive producer Sway to celebrate students at T.C. Williams High School, outside of Washington, D.C., for being the largest study body in the country to make the promise to graduate high school through the Graduate for Más program. He then joined Taco Bell leadership on a tour of Capitol Hill, meeting with the White House, select Members of Congress and key policymakers to discuss the need to inspire and enable teens to achieve more, starting with high school graduation.

Graduate for Más is an online program dedicated to empowering teens to make a personal promise to graduate high school and to achieve “más” in their communities. The Taco Bell Foundation for Teens developed the program in partnership with Get Schooled to provide digital tools, support and an online community that high school students need to stay on track. Once registered, teens can earn points for prizes, rewards and educational support, including scholarships and local mentoring resources. In celebration of the program’s launch, teens who promise to graduate will earn a coupon for a free crunchy taco at participating Taco Bell restaurants.

Prince Harry ended his US tour by thanking the people of America for their “extraordinary generosity” and playing in his fund-raising Sentebale Polo Cup match to help fund the work of his charity.

Speaking to the 400 polo guests who helped raise the funds for his Sentebale charity, Prince Harry said: "This is the last day of my tour around the United States. Thank you for a wonderful week.

“I have witnessed the extraordinary generosity of the people of this great nation.”

The match, which saw Prince Harry play against a team which included Dawn Jones, the wife of Hollywood star Tommy Lee Jones, was staged at Greenwich Polo Club, founded by billionaire businessman and art collector Peter Brant.

The Prince visited the White House, where he received glowing praise from First Lady Michelle Obama last Thursday, for serving his country as an officer in the British Army and for supporting America’s wounded servicemen and women.

And Prince Harry spent the weekend promoting America’s Warrior Games where British servicemen and women have been competing in Paralympic-style events against a large US team and troops from other countries.

The polo match was staged at the club in the exclusive Connecticut town of Greenwich. With its large colonial homes, white picket fence fences and immaculate grass verges it is a semi-rural retreat for executives, bankers and lawyers who commute to Manhattan.

Prince Harry played in a team captained by Malcolm Borthwick, an England regular, and their opponents were led by the Argentinian Nacho Figueras, a Ralph Lauren model, who was recently appointed an ambassador for Sentebale. Famous faces who watched the match included the fashion designers Valentino and Jason Wu, model Karolina Kurkova and the reality TV star Olivia Palermo.

They saw Prince Harry score the winning goal in a hard-fought game that ended Sentebale 4 St Regis 3.

Before the match Prince Harry spoke about the work of Sentebale to guests.

He said: "Since we last played for the Cup in Brazil a year ago, Sentebale has taken great strides forward. Our Mamohato Camps – what today is all about – have now established Network Clubs nationwide, reaching into the most remote, rural areas.

“Whilst Sentebale may be evolving rapidly, the situation on the ground in Lesotho remains critical.

“The HIV pandemic continues to leave thousands of children without parents and family structures to guide them through life.

“Without this support, basic needs such as food, shelter and care remain unmet, leaving children vulnerable and very often without much hope in their lives.”

Prince Harry and his winning team mates were presented with a trophy when they left the field and all received a kiss from Ms Kurkova.

Tim Cook Auction Closes With $610,000 Bid, Brings RFK Center Auction Total To $1.1 Million‏

Last month, the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights launched its 6th Annual Spring Auction at Charitybuzz.com, featuring 147 once-in-a-lifetime experiences spanning entertainment, sports, politics and business.

After three weeks of frenzied bidding and international attention, the auction’s first wave of packages closed yesterday to raise more than $1.1 million for the RFK Center’s global human rights programs.

“The RFK Center’s annual auctions empower our human rights advocacy around the world, from courtrooms to classrooms, from Cambodia to California,” said Kerry Kennedy, President of the RFK Center. “We are enormously grateful to our generous donors and to all those whose support will help us carry forward Robert Kennedy’s dream of a more just and peaceful world.”

The chance to have coffee with Apple CEO Tim Cook at Apple’s Cupertino, CA headquarters was the auction’s top grossing experience, with 86 bids placed and a final hammer price of $610,000 at 4:08 PM EST on May 14. The winning bidder, who wishes to remain anonymous, placed the winning bid at 3:52 PM EST. The coffee meeting is expected to be anywhere from 30 minutes to one hour long.

The Tim Cook auction tied the record for highest winning bid at global charity auction site Charitybuzz, which launched in 2005 to give bidders unique opportunities to live their dreams and make a difference. The record was set by a 2013 Lamborghini Aventador Roadster auctioned in March 2013 for $610,000.

Other top auction packages in the Robert F. Kennedy Center’s Spring Auction included: the chance to tour Space-X with Elon Musk, with a final bid of $42,500; two VIP tickets to the Kennedy Center Honors Black Tie Gala, with a final bid of $32,000; a day at training camp with Peyton Manning, with a final bid of $25,000; and lunch with Robin Williams on the set of his next film, with a final bid of $15,000.

To date, the RFK Center’s annual auctions at Charitybuzz have raised more than $4.6 million for human rights.

Triple platinum artist Waka Flocka Flame will amalgamate with Wallace Gator Bradley and his United In Peace, INC. to host an anti-violence concert in Chicago.

The anti-violence concert will be held the first week of June, at an undisclosed venue. The United In Peace INC’s concert purpose is to help spread the message about the senseless shootings and murders that have taken place in Chicago.

Waka Flocka – like many other recording artists – has chosen to be vocal about stopping the violence in Chicago.

“Senseless acts of violence is happening all over the world but it starts with us acknowledging the acts know. Chicago is the first but not the last for me,” said Waka Flocka.

UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and Olympic Gold Medallist and world champion figure skater Yuna Kim today made a heartfelt appeal for support for the children of conflict-torn Syria.

 In a 30-second video message Kim, a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF since 2010, calls on viewers to, “Help UNICEF help the children of Syria.”  
 
The crisis in Syria, now in its third year, has affected 3.1 million children inside Syria whilst the number of children who have fled to neighboring countries as refugees is nearing 730,000.    

UNICEF is delivering food, water, medical supplies, education, child protection – including psychological and counselling services – and vaccines to Syrians in need. More than 2,900 schools in Syria have been damaged by violence.   
Despite generous contributions so far, without additional urgent funding, UNICEF and partners will face enormous challenges to assist children and families in the coming months.
   
Since Kim joined UNICEF she has been a champion for children’s rights. Her activities include recording a television appeal after the devastating earthquake in Haiti in 2010.

She also recorded a public service announcement reminding the world to live up to its promise to achieve the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.

Kim has donated her prize money from the World Figure Skating Championships to children affected by the Japanese earthquake in 2011 and after her recent victory in the World Figure Skating Championship she donated her winnings to UNICEF for children with disabilities.

Prince Harry attended a dinner this week for The American Friends of The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry.

The Prince proved a draw to Sean Lennon, son of Beatle John Lennon, The Voice judge will.i.am, writer John McInerney, who penned Bright Lights Big City, and his socialite and philanthropist wife Anne Hearst McInerney, the granddaughter of newspaper baron William Randolph Hearst.

Speaking about Prince Harry, Sean Lennon said: “It’s great that he is here. He seems to be really enjoying it. But it seems as if the whole city is running around trying to spot him, so I hope he doesn’t think New York is always like this. He is well loved here.”

And will.i.am said: "I am a fan of how Queen Elizabeth raised her children and how they have raised their children.

“I am a great admirer of Prince Charles and his charity work and I think it is incredible Harry has made it part of his legacy to carry this on. He doesn’t have to do what he does, so I applaud him.”

The Black Eyed Peas star and producer met The Prince after last year’s Diamond Jubilee concert at which he performed.

He added: "He’s a party prince, a soldier and a philanthropist. He’s a regular guy. If Harry was a movie character he would be Iron Man.

“I grew up watching documentaries about the Royal Family so I am really pleased to be meeting him.”

The Prime Minister, on a separate official visit to America, attended the dinner after teaming up with Prince Harry earlier yesterday at an event in Manhattan promoting British innovation and technology.

The American Friends of the Royal Foundation will also provide some funding to the New York based Harlem RBI Prince Harry played baseball at yesterday, so it can expand its coaching to inner city youngsters.

The Friends were congratulated for the money they are providing to Harlem RBI in a foreword Prince Harry wrote for the fundraising evening.

The Royal Foundation is a charitable organisation set up by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry to channel their philanthropic activities. They concentrate their efforts in three main areas; veterans and military affairs, conservation and sustainable development and children and young people.

In his speech The Prince paid tribute to his Foundation’s US arm. He said: “Thank you, from William, Catherine and me. You are such an important part of our Foundation family.”

He added: "Almost a year ago – on the day before the London Olympics – The Royal Foundation launched Coach Core. This flagship initiative seeks to mentor and train our next generation of truly inspirational young sports coaches.

“The aim is that they, themselves, will then become mentors and role models to their peers and further generations over the years ahead.

“We now have pilot schemes running in London and Glasgow in Scotland – and I am delighted to announce that funds raised this evening will support a similar programme to be run in partnership with Harlem RBI here in New York, and potentially others like it.

“It is exciting that Harlem RBI’s Project Coach and our Coach Core will be linked in this way, sharing experience and lessons learned to provide opportunity and inspiration to disadvantaged young people here and back home in Britain.

“I visited the project in Harlem this afternoon, and met many of these young people whose lives are being changed through the power of sport.

“As they learn and grow under the careful guidance of Harlem RBI, they represent living proof of what can be achieved. It was truly uplifting.

“So, sport and coaching really does change lives.”

He then introduced two young men – one British and one from the US – who had become coaches for them to tell their own stories. Prince Harry’s seven day tour of the America ends today when he plays in the Sentebale Polo cup in Greenwich, Connecticut in aid of his Africa based charity Sentebale, which supports orphans in Lesotho.

Paul McCartney Joins Call For Global Ban On Animal Tests For Cosmetics

Former Beatle and long-time BUAV supporter Sir Paul McCartney has applauded the animal organization’s successful campaign to secure an animal testing ban for cosmetics in the European Union, and is now backing Cruelty Free International's work for a global ban on cosmetics tests on animals.

 Sir Paul McCartney said: “I have supported Cruelty Free International’s founding organization, the BUAV, over the years with its campaign to end cosmetics testing on animals. I am so proud to be part of this historic event and congratulate Cruelty Free International for succeeding in taking the cruelty out of beauty across the European Union. Together we have made a huge difference, yet animals continue to suffer because over 80% of the world still allows cosmetics testing on animals. I am now supporting Cruelty Free International with its campaign to seek a global ban to ensure that animals do not suffer for the sake of beauty anywhere in the world.”

Sir Paul McCartney joins Cruelty Free International celebrity supporters Joss Stone, and Global Ambassadors Peter Dinklage and Ricky Gervais.

In March 2013, the final phase of the European Cosmetics Directive came into force, banning all animal testing from taking place anywhere in the world for cosmetics products to be sold in the EU. A ban on cosmetics animal testing has already been in place in the EU for a number of years. This significant historical milestone was achieved after over twenty years of campaigning by Cruelty Free International’s founding organization, the BUAV.

Despite progress in some areas, over 80% of countries around the world still allow animal tests for cosmetics, including the U.S., Australia, Korea, Japan and India. Some countries, including China, actually require animal tests before products can be sold there. Sir Paul McCartney and Cruelty Free International are joining forces to work for a global ban.

Stars To Join National Memorial Day Parade

The American Veterans Center, organizer of the 2013 National Memorial Day Parade, announced that this year’s parade will feature several honorary celebrity marshals helping to call attention to the service and sacrifice of our military men and women.

Joining the parade as Grand Marshal will be U.S. Army veteran, actor, and motivational speaker J.R. Martinez. Joining the parade for the first time in 2013 will also be Honorary Grand Marshal and Grammy-nominated country superstar Trace Adkins, along with actors Gary Sinise and Joe Mantegna. The parade will also feature musical performances by “American Idol” winner and Paris Las Vegas headliner Taylor Hicks and Miss America 2013 Mallory Hagan.

Additionally, the 2013 National Memorial Day Parade will feature Honorary Grand Marshals U.S. Army Veterans Robert Griffin Jr. and Jacqueline Griffin , along with their son Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III, in a special salute to the sacrifices made by America’s military families.

The Parade will take place Monday, May 27, 2013 at 2:00 PM on Constitution Avenue between 7th and 17th Streets NW.

The parade’s television broadcast will be nationally syndicated to more than 100 cities and 80 million households across the country, with LIVE coverage on The Pentagon Channel and American Forces Network. It will also be streamed LIVE online at the parade’s website at www.nationalmemorialdayparade.com. In addition, anyone can participate virtually by marching with the troops at www.virtualbootsontheground.com.

Vanessa Williams Launches Handbags & Hearts Campaign For Women's Heart Health

Bayer HealthCare, the makers of Bayer Aspirin, WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease, and actress, singer and author Vanessa Williams today announce their partnership to launch Handbags & Hearts, a national campaign that leverages the link between women and their handbags – the one item they do not leave home without – and urges women to take the Handbags & Hearts pledge to carry aspirin at all times to be prepared for a sudden heart attack.

Being prepared by carrying aspirin, knowing the symptoms of heart attack and not putting off calling 911 if a heart attack is suspected, can be the difference between life and death.

More than 250,000 women die of a heart attack each year, yet most women’s handbags are better prepared for a broken nail (55%) or bad hair day (36%) than a heart attack (17%). In fact, in a recent survey, less than one-quarter of women said they carry aspirin in their handbag. When taken during a suspected heart attack and for 30 days thereafter, aspirin has been shown to reduce the risk of death by 23 percent and lessen a heart attack’s damaging effects to the heart muscle.

“I am passionate about this campaign and its message, as both of my grandmothers died from heart attacks at a young age. As Mother’s Day nears, I’m joining Bayer HealthCare and WomenHeart to urge all women to make their heart health a priority and to take the Handbags & Hearts pledge to carry aspirin in their handbags at all times and learn the symptoms of a heart attack in women. Women Don’t Know the Signs of Heart Attack 

When it comes to heart disease, men and women are not always created equal. In a recent online survey of 1,000 women, most had limited knowledge of heart attack symptoms different to them such as nausea (57%) and cold sweats (64%). And while most women (61%) surveyed said they now fear they are likely to have a heart attack in their lifetime, many said they did not ask their doctor about their “overall heart health” at their last physical.

“I see many women in my practice who are busy taking care of everyone but themselves. Don’t be passive about your health; ask your doctor about your coronary risks and a plan you can put in place to address those risks – before you have a heart attack,” said Tracy Stevens, MD, FACC, member of WomenHeart’s national Scientific Advisory Council, WomenHeart’s advisory group of the nation’s leading experts on women’s heart health. “And take the time now to know the signs of a heart attack in women. If you suspect a heart attack, calling 911 and taking aspirin as directed by a physician can be life-saving. Trust your gut – if something doesn’t seem right, don’t delay. Taken immediately at the onset of heart attack, aspirin can prevent the formation of additional blood clots that block the blood flow through the arteries and can reduce the risk of death. Carrying aspirin in case of emergency is a no-brainer. It’s one small change that can make all the difference.”

Duff McKagan (Guns N’ Roses, Loaded, Velvet Revolver) and Stone Temple Pilots guitarist Dean DeLeo, bassist Robert DeLeo and drummer Eric Kretz are the latest performers announced for the ninth annual MusiCares Map Fund benefit concert, taking place May 30 at Club Nokia in Los Angeles.
