Ted Movie Review

Practically everyone knows that when you see teddy bears on a movie screen or in a toy store you think of children. When I was a child I loved teddy bears! I just never thought a teddy bear would be used in an adult movie that would not be suitable for children to see. Well... the new movie "Ted" has been out for a week now and has brought in $54.1 million according to box office tracker Exhibitor Relations. I have decided that I have to go and see it since it looked funny from it's commercial trailers. I will let my readers know what I thought of it and give my review of it.

I'm back! I can honestly say Ted is funny throughout the whole movie! There was a lady in the audience who had a laugh that made the rest of us laugh even harder. This movie starts off so innocent, and then it turns into Ted and actor Mark Wahlberg living their life together as roommates until reality had to take place for the both of them. From there it spirals into scenes of laughter from the dialog to the actions. There wasn't a scene I can recall that bored me nor made me feel like going to sleep. If I wasn't laughing I had my mouth opened in shock! According to the writer and director Seth Macfarlane states, "the movie walks the line of "sweetness and bad taste." Mr. Macfarlane who is also the creator of America's popular adult cartoon "Family Guy", is also the magical voice of the character Ted. In this movie, the animated bear says whats on his mind, and does whatever makes him happy.

According to CBS News in California it is reported currently as the number one movie in the country. Mr. Macfarlane is real excited from going to the small screen to the big screen. In addition, he is reported as the highest paid writer and producer in network tv history. I'm sure he knows this is real big for him, and now more than ever before people will see more great work from Seth working with more great actors in his film career. In the video below I liked how the writer explains in his interview how he felt using Motion Capture Technology in a comedy that would set him apart for this movie because the technology is mainly used for action and fantasy movies. Instead, he decided to step outside the box of animation and use MCT for the first time in a comedy using a character in a normal everyday world. I will buy this movie when it does come out on DVD. I will say this as plain as I can, "it is very inappropriate for children, period"! If you do take your child, well you know I warned you! Music Artists Following Trends and Technology

As a recent graduate, I realize that the music industry continues to change with technology and trends. I recently was given a position as an intern on an online satellite radio station called Swurvradio in December of 2011. My position is to write music reviews and artists interviews. It has been no surprise to me that music artists today are following music industry trends and technology if they want to be successful in his and her music careers.

Each artist that I write music reviews on have their own social media site, webpage, and use SEO to increase their visibility online in the search engine. The trends today for artists is to utilize their social media sites to build their fan base for popularity online presence, and having a smart phone app to make it more convenient for fans to follow them. This is also known as the new music business model for artists to promote and brand their image. On Swurvradio, I am learning that if an artist does not have at least 5,000 fans following them on at least one of the social media sites such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter, the station will not consider them for a music review or interview.

Most of the artists are independent artists that Swurvradio caters to. However, major label artists are played on the station as well with music review’s I write about. This prepares me to excel for learning how the music industry radio stations work with playing artists on their stations. I find it is harder with independent artists to have more than 5,000 fan base or views because less people know about them. In addition, there are some independent artists out there in the music industry that I have done interviews on and music reviews that have over 30,000 fans and views for their music. I find this amazing!

This is due to technology that has allowed music artists today to change the way they can market their music careers.

A good example of this would be that more music artists have more control for the sales of their music with new distribution methods such as using iTunes, CD Baby, MySpace and so on. Record labels are not happy about this because they have less control of the sales, and are currently trying to strategically figure out how to gain back artists record sales. However, currently Sony Records is taking on Apples iTunes for music steaming called, “MusicUnlimited” that began in September 2011.

The company has strategically been planning this service for some time, and will allow users to use several services like iTunes, but with added services such as viewing music videos on their Vevo site.

In conclusion, music artists today is moving more into a trend and technology era giving fans more interaction with their favorite artists. Fans feel even a deeper relationship with their artists because technology has brought a more personal interaction between artists and fans. As I continue to learn how trends and technology is shaping the music industry, I will have a better knowledge on how to apply what I learn to the different work assignments I become involved in.

Celebrity Buzz with Marshall Toomey

As a child growing up, I have always loved my weekend cartoons. Cartoons such as Tom and Jerry, Yogi Bear, Super Hero’s, Fat Albert, Bugs Bunny, Smurfs, Richie Rich, Flintstones and so on have been my all time Saturday favorites. However, I also was in love with other cartoon characters from the Disney family. My favorite character was no other than Goofy! I know it sounds silly for a girl to be in love with the dog Goofy, but I was! Every time I went to Disneyland I had to take a picture with Goofy, and then the other characters. I absolutely loved the Mickey Mouse cartoon and friends, Cinderella, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Peter Pan, and the recent cartoon movie Princess and the Frog. Even though I had my favorite Disney cartoons, I use to dream of meeting some one that drew them. I thought it would be fascinating to meet the creative artist to tell them how much I loved the characters they drew. Two years ago, the Princes and the Frog came out, making this one of the most memorable Disney cartoon out that reflected an African American little girl that later turned into a Princess.

Don’t get me wrong, this is not about being cultural judgmental, I just never seen a cartoon with practically an all African American cast. I believe it shocked many people no matter what culture you are. The cartoon was a big success! What I’m excited about is I was given the opportunity to interview one of the cartoon artists who helped draw some of the characters on “The Princess and The Frog”! It’s no other than Marshall Toomey who worked for Disney for 20 years as one of their big cartoonists, who worked on many cartoons that we are all so familiar with. To name several of his big hit cartoons, Mr. Toomey worked on cartoons such as Beauty and The Beast who won a Golden Globe award at the Oscars, and being the first animated movie ever nominated for best picture! He also drew cartoons such as The Lion King, Fat Albert characters, Fog Horn, Rescuers Down Under, Aladdin, Little Mermaid and so on. Mr. Toomey has been busy in his career doing 23 cartoon movies, and involved with three live movies. Let’s not leave out he’s also done freelance work building his career when he first started out as a cartoonist. Here is my conversation with the talented Mr. Marshall Toomey:

Monique: Hi Marshall! Thank you for taking the time to do this interview with me today talking about your career as a cartoonist!

Marshall: Hi Monique! Thank you for talking with me. It is no problem. I love to talk about my career working with Disney as their cartoonists and other work I’ve done.

Monique: I have to ask, what made you want to draw professionally, and were you born with the gift to draw?

Marshall: It’s funny that you ask me that about both questions! First, drawing is a gift God gave me and I discovered it at the age of two. I drew everything and my family recognized I had a talent for drawing! All I know, I never stopped drawing and I wanted to be a cartoonist when I grew up. I left home and moved to California to pursue my dream and it happened!

Monique: Wow Marshall! Not many people can say they knew from such a young age what they was destined to do or be when they grew up.

Marshall: I just always knew! (LOL!)

Monique: Well, I wish I knew! (LOL!)

Monique: How did you get started?

Marshall: I got started after moving to California putting my drawings in newspapers and other publications. After awhile, I went to apply for a cartoon position at Disney and the rest is history! I had good years working at Disney.

Monique: What are some other things you have done for Disney?

Marshall: I have been on many cartoon movies working with other talented cartoonists. I’ve also traveled the world for Disney doing interviews auditioning people. One in particular I will never forget! I had to interview 92 people in France in one day for a one mans character for the character Milo for the movie Atlantis. That was a crazy day!

Monique: What! I know you must have been TIRED!

Marshall: That’s what I loved about working as a cartoonist, being creative and finding people to fit the right characters for voice-overs to play the characters.

Monique: Where did you draw the characters?

Marshall: I drew many of the characters in Disney’s featured animation building with my cartoonist co-workers in Burbank.

Monique: That’s fascinating! Did you get to supervise on any of your cartoon developments besides drawing them?

Marshall: Yes I did! As a matter of fact, I supervised as an art director with 18 animated production designers and many others that would take too long to mention.

Monique: I recall you saying Disney hired you back in 2009 after you retired to work on the cartoon movie “Princess and The Frog”. I loved this cartoon! My friend and I went on the Disney lot and watched the movie there with our kids. Then we were all invited to go in one of their stage warehouse to see the different live characters to take pictures with, and to see how cartoons are made. It was amazing!

Marshall: That was great! I hope everyone enjoyed the experience! The funny thing about that movie is I drew myself as the cook, but with weight! Sometimes cartoonists will implement themselves in cartoons to spice it up!

Monique: No! The cook? I’m going to check it out to see any resemblance. That’s creative!

Monique: Marshall, this has been an informative interview and I finally had one of my dreams come true!

Marshall: what’s that?

Monique: Actually meeting a cartoonist who drew some of my favorite cartoons! (LOL)!

Marshall: (LOL)! That’s great! That doesn’t come often I guess!

Monique: Two last questions, what advise can you give anyone who wants to draw and want to be a successful cartoonist? Also, what are you currently doing?

Marshall: I have my own editorial cartoon webpage up ready for all publications and businesses who need certain cartoons for their advertisements and so on. My prices are reasonable, and drawings creative. There are more things I am anticipating doing, but this is my first project I’ve been working on after finally retiring. Marshall: Now, a word of advice!

Marshall: first, learn how to draw well by going to classes, and continue to draw everyday. It’s important that you love what you do. Develop a portfolio and build it to show your professional work! Never give up, just follow your dreams. Again, take drawing classes, even if you are an excellent drawer. You can always learn more!

Incorporating Business Experts Advice into My Own Business Plan

Mr. Donald Trump has been a business leader that many entrepreneurs look up to to follow. He believes that a business without a business plan will not survive because there is no direct focus. He couldn’t be more than right. As a student earning my masters degree in Entertainment Business, I clearly agree with Mr. Trump with a business plan guiding me with my own business for my online marketing company Simply Entertainment Marketing and the subsidiary business called All About Musik. As I sit and examine my business plan in the making, it is causing me to develop the necessary directions with focus and determination. The directions I’m speaking of is building a winning team of experts who are skilled in the digital marketing field for the entertainment industry that will help guide me in the right direction. Secondly, understanding who my target audience is specifically will give my company a better leverage on who to focus on with creating the business that caters to their marketing needs that is growing rapidly for artists and entertainment companies today. Keeping up with technology and trends is essential for my business to implement because the entertainment industry is also known as trendsetters. Being creative and innovative is my focus for setting new trends in my business industry. This allows S.E.M and A.A.M to build strong relationships with their clients and attract new clients. I understand in order for my business to make it successful, I need to keep up with the latest marketing trends, workshops, seminars, and listen to my clients on what they want. Marketing techniques are consistently changing, and new software’s are constantly improving to accommodate businesses needs. In addition, it is good business sense to focus also on my competitors for what they are doing to better themselves, and how their target audience is responding to them. These are the focuses that will be strategically modeled after for my marketing and music business company to grow and be successful.

Ms. Oprah Winfrey Is another business leader I look up to because she has long Gevity with her business empire she grew thru the years, and it demonstrates her success thru out her career. Ms. Winfrey’s business plan advice I will incorporate into my business plan is to see what needs to be changed forecasting for the what- ifs moments. The what- if’s is almost being a psychic looking into the future for my business. I will need to research the possibilities that could possibly cause me to either be unsuccessful or successful when it comes to the operations of my business. Understanding all necessary costs for operations, supplies, sales and everything else involved to run my business, will be the foundations in making money for my business. Implementing in my business plan every detail of cost matters because it’s the numbers that will determine my business health. Without incorporating the what- ifs in my business plan for my business just wouldn’t be business smart in my humblest opinion. In addition, Ms. Winfrey also believes that people who want to own their own business, needs to understand that there needs to be changes within their business plan as their business grows. I will follow this advice in my business plan because making changes will continue to help my business prosper, and keeping up with trends and technology for my clients marketing needs. In Oprah’s Magazine O, the author Ronna Lichtenberg “believes that by taking a day to think about the way you earn your living, you can make a huge difference in making your job more fulfilling” (Lichtenberg, R., 2001). This is true for my business because the work I do to earn my living is make a difference in lives that want their careers, and businesses to succeed through marketing and music business knowledge. Having passion makes all the difference in helping S.E.M and A.A.M grow.

The specific changes I’ve made for my business plan currently are changing the music business classes from a music industry big name facility to a community school in the same city. This will cut All About Musik’s monthly rent cost. LA City College in Los Angeles will charge All About Musik a cheaper rate to hold their classes the two nights a week needed than LA Recording School. Doing this change will take some pressure off the company’s monthly bill’s. However, All About Musik wants to teach at LA Recording School in the near future because the school is a larger target audience for A.A.M to attract, with anticipation that students will take advantage of S.E.M’s marketing services as the business grows to work with film and gaming students marketing needs. In this event, A.A.M will by then have more finances to afford to hold classes at LA Recording School after their classes grow a few years. Although, the class will cost a little higher to balance out the higher rent being paid. The changes made from the business plan will have changes as the company grows due to new technology, software, employees, and new marketing services added to S.E.M as a business.

The author Elizabeth Wasserman states, “According to inc.com “the financial section of a business plan is one of the most essential components of the plan” (Wasserman, E., 2010). The most important section in S.E.M’s business plan to angel investors would be the financial section in my opinion. This will give the investors the future forecast whether S.E.M and A.A.M business will be viable or wasting their time and money. There is nothing more worse than an investor who believed the business they chose to invest in was really a money pit. In other words, do S.E.M’s financial projection make sense? If so, then the investor’s can see that S.E.M and A.A.M is a good choice to invest in because they will see that the management team is capable of implementing S.E.M’s business plan. Last but not least, there are four steps in raising capital for angel investors, which are: executive summary, investor presentation, due diligence and investment. These four components are what make or break any entrepreneurs chances in receiving the funding he or she needs to start their business. The author Adam Hoeksema states, “According to the Angel Capital Education Funding report only between 1 and 4% of entrepreneurs that apply for angel investment funding will make it through the entire 4-stage process (Hoeksema, A., 2010). With that being said, it will be critical for me to understand how to implement the four processes in receiving funding from any angel investor. In conclusion, many people dream of owning their own business, but it takes research, skills, hard work and legal guidelines to make a person’s business dream become successful and grow. One thing I will say, never start a business without a business plan if you want to be in the future for long Gevity, because without a plan you have no future.

A Successful Business Has A Business Plan

Practically every successful business had started out with a strategic business plan. Business plans are strategic guidance that allows people to analyze their business ideas on written format. People have new and improved ideas for products and services all the time. However, it takes discipline, integrity, patience, resources, dedication, strategic planning, a smart business team and money invested to have a successful business. Two great business people come to mind when it comes to building a business empire and that is no other than Mr. Donald trump and Ms. Oprah Winfrey. Both are two of the greatest examples of leadership of entrepreneurship. If there ever were two people to follow in business planning, it would be Ms. Winfrey and Mr. Trump to learn from.

Donald Trump was born in 1946 in Queen’s New York. As a child, Donald Trump’s parents sent him to a military school called New York Military Academy at the age of 13 to help channel his energy into something positive. Because of the discipline teachings from the academy, Mr. Trump became a leader within his student body and a star athlete. After high school, Mr. Trump graduated from Pennsylvania University with a degree in Economics. According to Bio True Story, “Trump seems to have been strongly influenced by his father in his decision to make a career in real estate development, but the younger man's personal goals were much grander than those of his senior” (Bio True Story, 2011). Donald Trump believes a business plan helps an individual with focus and direction. He basically believes a business without a plan is a business that will fail.

Oprah Winfrey was born in Mississippi raised on a farm by her grandmother who taught her how to read bible verses and poems by the age of three. By the age of six Oprah was sent to Milwaukee to live with her young mother who was working as a housemaid. Ms. Winfrey later in her childhood was able to move with her military dad Vernon who put her through college at Tennessee State University and found a job working in radio and television broadcasting. Since then Oprah has launched The Oprah Show in 1986 earning over $120 million in profit’s it’s first year, along with being the highest grossed daytime show in history. Ms.Winfrey states, "Where there is no struggle, there is no strength" (Winfrey, 2010).

According to George Deeb who writes topics on his blog about business plans, there are six critical and key components that investors are looking for in a business plan: (1) your industry/competition; (2) business/revenue model; (3) sales/marketing plan; (4) management team; (5) cash requirements; and (6) forecasted financials/expected ROI (Deeb, G., 2011). Mr. Deeb believes industry and competition is the most critical because of the research needed up front. All six categories are all considered key because an individual cannot expect to have success without a plan that does not execute knowing the competition and industry for the business desired. Knowing how to implement the business structure is key for the operation of the business. The sales and marketing plan is being creative for all avenues reaching potential customers and revenues generated. A good management team can make or break a business, so it is important to choose a management team that really cares about the business and it’s future growth. Choosing a good management team means choosing a team with the skills needed for the job, prior experience, and a good fit for one another that share the same vision. Knowing your cash requirements is helpful because investors prefer a smaller cash need from a business than a higher cash need. All of these elements for critical and key components are what shapes successful businesses in tomorrow’s leader’s.

The blog before this blog was about how Shanice is using digital marketing to her advantage through her social networks, and her personal website called www.shaniceonline.com. There are many artists out in the music industry who can sing, but when you can remember an artist who can just blow you away with his or her vocal talents, a fan will never forget that artist. One of my favorite singers in the early 1990’s was no other than Shanice Wilson who was signed to A&M Records in 1986. She has always been an artist I had always looked up to because she gave her fans good music. She’s soulful, gifted vocally, and presents herself like a real lady should. Shanice never sold herself out by turning into an artist who exposed her body to fans just to like her; and for that, it is why I have always respected her. I did get one chance to meet her on the set of the show called “Martin” created by Martin Lawrence at CBS studios in 1991 where my cousin Cliff Miller was on the game show called Gladiator. Just like I expected, Shanice was kind and friendly to meet.

I am happy to say after 20 years of Shanice still being one of my favorite artist, it was an honor and a privilege to speak with Shanice early this week about how going independent has taken a positive turn for her, and how many past and new artists are headed with going independent. We also spoke about her giving new artists and entertainment student’s advice on where the music business is headed. Here is what Shanice Wilson and I talked about:

(Monique)- Good afternoon Shanice! thank you for allowing me to speak with you about how the music business is changing, and you being an independent artist!

(Shanice)- Thank you Monique, it is my pleasure!

(Monique)- Many people in the industry remember that John McClay discovered you and you were signed to A&M Records in 1986. Then after two years with A&M you were signed to two other record labels that were Motown and LaFace Records. By 2005 you started your own independent label called “Imajah/Playtyme Records”. With that being said, why did you decide to go independent as an artist?

(Shanice)- I decided to go independent because of the advantages I saw. First of all, an artist has to go through his and her label to get permission to do whatever is presented to them. If an artist wants to talk with their fans, they need permission from the label to do so. If an artist wants to do anything and have their own ideas, they have to consult with the label first. Being an independent artist the artist has the freedom to do what they want without having to deal with someone telling them what to do. The downside in being an independent artist is the financial side weighs heavier on the artist. Being signed to a major label the artist financial responsibilities are being taken care of by the label. However, make no mistake, the artist will pay back every penny they owe their label!

(Monique)- Wow! So the glamour looks good up front, but behind the scenes of it, the artist is hit with the reality of the business side.

(Shanice)- Yes! I didn’t earn much from the sales of my albums in my earlier career Monique! I wrote many of my songs and that is where most of my money came from. Everyone got paid before me, but my song writing brought me royalty checks up to this day!

(Monique)- I am well aware of that strategy in this business. Song writing is where the bread and butter is at the most. If there is any advice you can give entertainment students and new artist who are trying to make it in the music business today what are they?

(Shanice)- I would say “know who you are as an artist, don’t depend on the label to tell you who you are like I did if you are signed by a major label”. I’m saying, don’t allow the label to make you be an artist you know you are not feeling comfortable being. Being confident in yourself and your music will help you get where you want to go”. Writing your own music is the best thing an artist can do because it’s what will give them long Gevity for making money from the songs the artist created for years to come. Also, learn the music business side, it will help in the long run.

(Monique)- I totally agree! One last thing Shanice, I heard on KJLH 102.3 radio station that you had finished performing at the Wilshire Ebert Theater for HIV/AIDS awareness cause with Sheryl Lee Ralph doing the show called “Divas Simply Singing” on October 22^nd, 2011. I wanted so bad to attend the show because it is a worthy cause to raise money for finding a cure for HIV/AIDS virus, and Ms. Riley selected some great singers to perform like yourself.

(Shanice)- Thank you, and yes it is a worthy cause. As an artist I feel I have to give back when opportunities present themselves to me. The one thing I really believe in is caring for people. Sheryl Lee Ralph has been doing this cause for 21 years and I am happy to be a part of it this year.

(Shanice)- Well, I am currently promoting my new single called “Tomorrow” that was released in March of this year, and doing some acting. “I have always loved acting and singing”. By next year in 2012, my husband Flex and I have plans on having our own production company. I also am excited to announce that I am singing on Michael Jackson’s new album called “Michael” on a track called “Behind The Mask” with Michael Jackson being released on 11-21-11. This will make a great holiday gift!

As technology expands within the entertainment industry, signed artists and Independent artists expand his and her ideas in being creative for maximum exposure in the music industry. Today artists are connecting more with their fans by developing personal relationships that allow their fans to follow them on social net works, artist blogs, and artist’s websites. It’s hard to believe that over a decade ago the only way fans could feel connected close to their favorite artist was to mail letters, email and win a chance to meet the artist. MySpace was one of the first places online artists tuned to for marketing and promoting their new album or single. Of course record labels marketed and promoted their artists too, but artists began to recognize something more personal when he and she connected with their fans on their social network site like MySpace. Fans are able to communicate with their favorite artist by keeping up with the latest news of concert promotions, artist appearances, album and single releases. This cycle exploded causing other social network sites to jump-start their sites to be compatible with MySpace. Soon after, Facebook took it to another level and artists began marketing and promoting having their own fan page on Facebook connecting with more fans. Twitter on the other hand did a twist and introduced online tweets from artists. Fans are excited to read what the artist is doing by reading the artists tweets and tweeting back to the artist. All of this began a domino effect in the entertainment industry and technology continues to improve more effectively. Everyone who is already known, and everyone trying to become known in the industry is utilizing the many directions digital marketing is guiding.

Independent artists have to push harder to market and promote themselves because there are no big labels pushing the sale of the artist music. Substantial finances play a big part when it comes to marketing and promoting artists music. Independent artists are more limited than artist signed. Independent artist have taken advantage more of their social network sites and created personal websites that features their music, merchandise, showcase appearances, and other resources about themselves. More artists today are going independent because he and she have better control of their music career.

It is independent artist like Shanice <Wilson>Shanice Wilson who gives other independent artist encouragement. She is an example like many other artists who utilize her social network sites and her very own website called www.shaniceonline.comto market, promote and brand her self. Shanice Wilson navigated her way up the music charts in the early 90’s as a dynamic R&B soul singer. She was signed to Motown Records in 1991 featuring her album called Inner Child with the popular song “I Love Your Smile”. It was after 1999 Shanice went independent as an artist. By 2006 Shanice brought her single out “Every Woman Dreams”. Since then Shanice has been utilizing her social networks and personal website to promote and market her music. Fans are excited to be able to reconnect with Shanice in a more personal way. Never before has it been easier for artists to reach their fans faster from around the world by online presence.

What Are Some New Industry Trends Authors Are Doing To Promote Their Book?

As an inspiring author, I researched some trends that authors today are doing to market and promote their books. To my surprise I was amazed at the different directions authors are going. For instance, many authors dream is to get published by a major publisher, however, that has become slim. Most major publishers are signing an A-List client first such as celebrities or well known already authors. At the same time, some well-known authors are experiencing the same reaction from the major publishers as well. What was interesting in what I found was the way authors are going about getting their book out to the public. In addition, technology has opened up a new world for author’s to promote his or her book out faster. This is going to amaze some of you who are self publishing your book as well if you are stuck on what to do about promoting your book. Many authors today are doing what you call a blog for their book promotion. This is great in my opinion because it’s another way in building more of a fan base! An author can post their book blog on their social networks, and their websites. Many authors I read are putting sample chapters each month to their blogs. This is called a teaser. It causes the reader to want more of the author’s book waiting in anticipation for their book release. Making a website is another way to get readers to know about an authors book and about the author. Please make sure you have copy written your book first before posting your book chapters to anything!

A website is another great site a customer can buy an author's book by ordering with PayPal, and read sample chapters from the book. According to Professor Craft "having resources on an author’s website as well is good to have" (Craft, K. 2011). On my website I would have some resources for victims of domestic violence to get help. As an author who is writing a book on domestic violence, I want the customers to buy my book on my site, but also a T-shirt, a coffee mug, and a tote bag with the books image on it to make the customer feel engaged to my book. The title of my book is a hook, so a reader would buy the additional items because the hook makes a person think towards a positive mind. I won’t stop there, how about a CD single to go along with the book sung by me. Although, it is not wise to sing if you can't, you may get bad reviews! Finding mentor's to get reviews for an author's book is great for recommendations. I may choose to make a deal with my therapist I had counseling with to sell my book in his office. This reason is because he deals with domestic violence victims a lot who can read my book to help them heal even faster. In exchange I will promote his business on my website and social networks. An author has to think outside the box in order to become successful and stand out.

It doesn’t stop there, some authors are also sending out mass emails that are free as well of their chapters to draw customers to buy their book when it’s published. Some authors I read are partnering up with independent stores like Costco, Starbucks, Sam’s Club and specialty stores to sell their books. Don’t forget about if you are a college graduate that it maybe in your best interest to get your book published in your school’s alumni magazine. All of this is building the buzz about the book. Research is amazing to an author who is diligently searching how to get their book out when the big publisher’s are not talking to them. However, once an author get enough buzz about their book and make some decent money, the author may get that phone call from a big publisher that wants to sign them. The big publisher may come looking for the author if they feel the book is profitable to their standards. If this happens to an author, the author can negotiate a better publishing deal on his or her terms!

In conclusion, whatever is best for promoting and marketing the book, always remember going above and beyond helps in becoming successful than being mediocre. Is the traditional business model of publishing changing?

As I have researched the Internet about the best way in getting my book published, I have discovered some changes with the business model of traditional publishing. First, let me say, I am happy about writing my biography of my life. I use to be a victim of domestic violence, abused in a bad marriage. Many victims are not here today to tell their story, and that is why I am very grateful that God gave me the opportunity to tell my story to inspire those whom are going through domestic violence, or those who had a family member or friend who did. I believe it is critical for me to understand the new changes for getting my book published. It also means as an author, I understand the new roles that today’s authors are facing.

Once upon a time about two decades ago, authors wrote their stories on a typewriter, used white out, and rewrote their stories over and over again. This kind of writing made authors frustrated, stressed if words were misspelled incorrectly, and few authors finished their stories due to so much time having to be put into writing from typing on the typewriter. If an author did finish their book, the next step was getting it professionally edited, shopping for a publisher, a literary agent, and so on. However, today more people are writing because technology has changed. Now more people have PC’s in their homes, which cuts down an author’s frustration for misspelled words and using white out for corrections. The computer has caused more first time writers to write books and get them published. Word processor programs, publishing software, and sophisticated laser printers contribute in helping people write novels more today also. Let’s talk about why is traditional publishing changing. First, I can say that when I researched about today’s publishing business model, I discovered that if an author independently self published them selves a couple of decades ago, the author’s work was not considered good and lacked talent. Today that has changed. More authors are self-publishing their books because publishing companies have made it almost impossible to support an author unless he or she is well known and famous which is called an A-List client. Secondly, being a celebrity or a famous author, more popular literary agents are publishing more big name clients instead of un-known authors. Publishing companies are taking a fine tooth-comb and looking to see where and how they will be successful in profits for signing celebrities because after all, agents make his or her living by commission.

A regular author has a far less chance in making a living writing a book today. According to Steven Mather “it has become more difficult for the aspiring writer to get published and make any significant money doing so”, “You can’t make a living at writing, but you can make a killing” (Mather, S. 2009, Para. 4). The reason it’s harder for an author to make a lot of money quickly is because more people are writing and less people are buying hard copy books. The digital era is in. More authors have to work harder because of their competition, advertise them selves by using creative marketing techniques, and getting an agent to shop for a reputable publishing company. I will be honest, I never dreamed of writing a book, but because I have an Apple computer that is the latest technology of PC’s, I thought it would be easier to write my book. Is it easy writing? I will say it has been challenging, but I am determined. I have not made up in my mind which way to go as far as self-publishing or shooting for a big literary agent. I’m almost convinced I would do better to self publish my book. I was amazed at the astonishing number of authors that were published over the last two decades.

Steven Mather states the number of new books published per year has skyrocketed from 50,000 in 1985 to near 200,000 in 2004, many written by first-time writers (Mather, S. 2009, Para 4). So all you first time authors, good luck, and much success to you all.

Monkeying Around with Copyright Law

Many people find themselves in trouble when proper procedures are not followed when it comes to understanding copyright laws and the legalities involved. Copyright owners are fighting back when their materials and trademark names are being used without the proper authorizations. It was interesting to learn how Shaq the basketball player who played at the time for the Phoenix Suns in 2008 filed a lawsuit against a man named Michael Calmese for trademark infringement. Mr. Calmese improperly used Shaq’s trademark name “Shaqtus” on different items sold on his website called True Fan Logo Inc. According to Nick Divito, “Shaquille O'Neal's company wants a businessman to stop selling items over the Internet that feature a cartoon character of the basketball star in the form of a cactus. The character plays on O'Neal's nickname as "The Big Shaqtus" after his move to the Phoenix Suns in 2008” (Divito, N., 2010). The Nevada court ruled in Shaq’s favor based on the 8 factors of trademark confusion. The Nevada court determined that Mr. Calmese purposely meant to cause confusion to the public. The final decision by the court demanded Mr. Calmese from continuing to sell Shaq’s trademark name made on items over the Internet, and ceasing the domain name shaqtus.net.

Preparing for my own business plan of an artist management company, it is important to know the laws to follow for proper authorized permission from a copyright owner when I want to use an owner’s copy written material. An artist management company many times uses promotional advertisements using photos, videos and music on their websites advertising materials of artists to inquire customers from the music business. On the Internet I have found information from a company called Verdict Management who has a professional staff in helping entertainment businesses like mines with services helping with legal issues, business plans, and all other genre’s needed. An important advice I will follow is staying on top of current IP laws when it comes to my business. (Episode #23)

Record Labels to pay $47.5 Million

It sounds strange to hear record labels preparing trust accounts to pay legal fees for possible future lawsuits against them for illegal copyright infringement usage. In Canada the courts have had several incidents where some Canadian record labels have taken on a new type of action to prepare themselves for possible lawsuits from copyright owners. The record labels would put away a substantial amount of money in a bank trust account in case their appellants would win. Additionally, the labels would try to settle for $47.5 million if their company was ever taken to court for using other songwriters music unauthorized and not paying out royalties. The courts saw this as being unethical as a business, and had determined that the labels did not do a good job in locating the copyright owners. The question had risen “should this type of action be allowed without some kind of repercussion behind it”? The courts in the U.S. also had seen this same type of behavior from record labels doing the same unethical action. In 2008 the United States courts had implemented a new penalty called “Timely Paying Mechanics” penalizing record labels from their intentional copyright infringements. The U.S. courts feel also that copyright owners need to stay on top of their materials to keep the unethical actions from continuously rising.

Good advice would be to always keep up with any copy written materials a business or person copyrights. A business or a person never knows whom maybe taking advantage of their works and making money that really belong to the rightful owner. I will make sure that anything that I copyright for my business will be properly registered and implemented in my business plan. What I’ve learned online is that there are plenty of lawyers who are knowledgeable in helping me with my business to stay in compliance with the law. (Episode #17)

Tribute Band Names

Popular artists from around the world have been imitated for their style and music. Las Vegas is the capital where a person can go see some of their most favorite look alike artists or band being played by other people who can sound and look like the original artists. However, some artists do not allow their name brand to be paraded out in the limelight without proper consent. For example, a popular band called Aba notified all tribute bands to stop using their trademark name, and change the tribute band name writing cease and desist letters at this point. Another band who had been against their trademark name being used were the world famous Beatles. The Beatles heard about a show they hated called “The Beatles Mania”. The Beatles filed a lawsuit against Apple v. Liber who created the tribute show in 1986 for publicity violations and unfair competition. The defendants claimed that the first amendment gave them the right for fair usage. The courts examined the reasoning and laws that helped support the defendants claims and found that the show Beatles Mania was not allowed to use the name Beatles due to commercial exploitation.

The best advice I believe in this kind of situation is that no business should allow anyone to use his or her brand name any kind of way. Protecting a name of a business by an owner helps keep it’s value and identity free from possible defamation damages. For my business plan, I will make sure my business name and logo is properly protected. It is best in making sure anyone who wants to use my business name for promotional purposes will have to get my consent. The Internet is full of prying hackers waiting to find people who have no knowledge in understanding the laws. For me, my business name is who I am, and I must represent my business in the most professional and honest company my customers can trust. (Episode #12)

How Jay-Z and Kanye West Beat the Leakers With 'Watch the Throne'

Practically everyone who listens to music realizes that most of his or her favorite artist music has been downloaded before it is released to buy. Music Piracy has been the biggest issue in the music industry for over at least two decades. Piracy is a crime and is connected to copyright infringement. More rap artists has dealt with this kind of problem the most. Record labels have tried to think of many ways to slow down music piracy but have not been too successful to ending it. It is unfortunate that sites such as LimeWire who is no longer in existence have caused damages to artist and record labels. LimeWire is currently under a court order for not getting proper permission for music downloads they allowed their customers to obtain. Rap artists such as Jay-Z and Kanye West have taken extra pre-cautions in keeping their recently released album “Watch the Throne” under tight security measures with the CIA before it’s release date into stores. According to Steven Horowitz from The Hollywood Reporter “the duo successfully staved off hackers with a leak-proof strategy -- an anomaly for an industry consistently brought to its knees by web-savvy individuals eager to share unreleased material with the world” (Horowitz, J.S., 2011, Para 2). Both artists wanted their listeners to get that first experience in opening the CD and listening to it for the first time with amazement like back in the day. The engineers Mike Dean, Anthony Kilhoffer and Noah Goldstein had the music’s hard drive secured in one engineer’s brief case. The engineers had disabling their Wi-Fi on their computers so hackers could not get to the sessions for leakage. To open the brief case one has to use their finger that is registered with high profile software and have it scanned to open it! Some record executives believe that this could be a measure that other artists may take with their music.

My Opinion: I believe if this is a way an artist and record labels can protect the music from illegal copyright infringements then I say it is worth it. After all, music piracy has caused artists and labels to loose a lot of money due to some people who have no respect for artist’s hard work. Maybe this can even work in the film industry as well. This goes for me getting permission with my business when I want to promote using an artist picture or music on my website.

Why Music Producer Dr. Luke Sues People Who Claim He Copies Songs (Analysis)

It has been known in the past for artists and music producers taking other artist work and using loops of the original work in their own song. Rap music is big on this kind of accusation. However, the law had implemented in the late 80’s and early 90’s a clause that artists must get proper permission from the original artists to keep from being accused of copyright infringement. The original artist can cease and desist the activity sales to recover damages for the profits made on the song or film. Producer Dr. Luke is all too familiar with being accused of copyright infringement for other artist’s music. For instance, he was accused by the Bellamy Brothers for plagiarizing the same music tune for the song he produced for Britney spears hit song called “Hold It Against Me” in march of 2011. He was found in court not guilty. Many artists compare their music with his songs on YouTube and it is why Dr. Luke is called to court on many occasions. However, Dr. Luke has decided to strike back at artist with a term called “defamation” of his character in court. According to Eric Gardner of Hollywood Esq., “Dr. Luke is also currently engaged in a similar kind of dispute with the songwriter Chrissy over claims of copying her song, "My Slushy" to create Ke$ha's "Tik Tok” (Gardner, E., 2011, Para. 11). Dr. Luke states "These days, anyone can put two songs up and make a mash-up by changing the key of this one and say, 'Oh, these songs are similar.' A lot of things are similar. But you don’t get sued for being similar. It needs to be the same thing. Almost doesn’t count. Close but no cigar. People are suing for close” (Dr. Luke, 2011, Para. 12). Dr. Luke believes it has caused damage to the new song Tik Tok Ke$ha’s, and fans will hold back from buying the single because of it. You hear of this kind of accusations quite often, and it is why the law allows the original artist or songwriter to sue for large financial damages.

My Opinion: I understand why some of the artists have accused Dr. Luke of copyright infringement, but I also believe that it is important to know that a person would not continue to be believed of this wrongful act knowing it would jeopardize their career. I also feel the artist should really get legal representation to listen to their song and compare the song being misrepresented with their original work. I feel this kind of strategy will save the accusing artist time and money.

Digital drives music sales up 4.8%

It has been reported that digital music sales have increased making artists and record labels happy. Music Piracy has caused artist and record labels to loose money. Record labels have tried coming up with ways to stop the music piracy but continue to brainstorm for answers. According to Christopher Morris an editor at Variety Magazine “The digital side now accounts for 32% of all album sales, with electronic music the leading genre, taking 49% of the pie” (Morris, Christopher, 2011, Para. 5). More artists are using the digital music websites such as iTunes and CD Baby to have their fans purchase their albums and singles. Artist believe this gives them better control of their sales and having their own online store on their websites will slow down the music piracy. Websites such as LimeWire that allowed unauthorized downloading are continuously being taken off the Internet by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and anyone found guilty still downloading illegally will be prosecuted. The rise in digital sales reported in 2011 has been gospel, classical, new age, country, electronic and rock, which means true fans are following the guidelines to proper downloading. Entertainment Analytics David Bakula states, "I think the year will end very positively" (Bakula, D., 2011, Para. 15). Currently the trend is more artists are allowing their fans to listen to snippets of their songs on the album on their websites, and setting a lower price for the digital copy and a little increased price on the physical CD for them to purchase. Also, more artist are putting out singles than albums because they feel their fans are buying what they want instead of picking certain songs off their album to illegally download. Due to this kind of strategic planning by artists, it has actually slowed down some of the illegal down loading and loss of revenues.

My Opinion: I believe that it is a good way to slow down music piracy for the music industry to allow more singles to be put out by artists. The main reason people illegally down load is because they’re looking for only their favorite song or selective songs if the album is not meeting their expectations. I do believe also by the music industry using this strategy that artists are going to have to work harder for better albums for their fans demands to increase their album sales. Whether it is digital or physical sales of artist’s music, I feel digital sales may take over.

Celebrity Buzz with Robbin Grider!

Where has real talent in the music industry gone today? Today, technology has taken over to make an ok artist sound great with the special sound affects and new buttons on the engineer board to change voices. I’m not saying there are no more real talented singers out there because it is. I’m only saying artists back in the day played real instruments, and did not need a lot of tweeting vocally to sound amazing! I remember a group in the 80’s and early part of the 90’s that could play real instruments, and sing that had style and grace! It was no other than the talented group called Klymaxx! I remember dancing with my girlfriends in junior high and high school to their music. This all-girl band was hot, and definitely talented! The band is popular for the songs The men All Pause, Meeting In The Ladies Room, and I Miss You.

Klymaxx original band members in the 80’s was drummer/vocalist Bernadette Cooper, vocalist Lorena Porter (Stewart), bassist/vocalist Joyce Irby, guitarist Cheryl Cooley, and keyboardists Robbin Grider and Lynn Malsby. Robbin Grider gave me the honor to interview her about some insights of her experience in the industry, and as a member. Robbin also speaks to up coming artists about what is most important for an artist music career. Here is our interview:

(Monique)- At what age did you learn to play music instruments such as the keyboard, guitar, bass and piano?

(Robbin)- It’s funny that you ask me that (while chuckling)! I started playing music instruments at the age of 14 years old. I played them so much I just became good at it. It was the love of music that made me want to learn to play the instruments!

(Monique)- Wow! Your right, most guys were known to play keyboards and guitars and other instruments in bands in those times than a girl being seen playing them.

(Monique)-What made you Robbin join the group Klymaxx?

(Robbin)- You know! It was more out of curiosity! I was enrolled in the union called Local 47 Music Union, and I received a call from Bernadette Cooper to come and audition. I went and auditioned and Bernadette said, “Please join my all-girl band Klymaxx! I was amazed that there were other females that could play instruments like me. It was rare to see and hear that because I use to play in gigs with guys and never really saw females in the music industry play live instruments!

(Monique)- You are right, it was rare to see a female play live instruments in the industry in that time, and unfortunately even now!

(Monique)- Did you sign with Klymaxx right away when Bernadette invited you to be part of the group?

(Robbin)- Not right away! I actually performed on the first album and I did not have a contract with Solar Records. I did not like the fact in the current contract it enabled the band members to write, collaborate or appear on other artist’s projects. I was use to writing and collaborating with other people in the industry, so I waited until the contract expired and had added a clause in the next contract that best fit me. It was by the second album I signed with Solar Records.

(Monique)- I can totally understand that. It is unfortunate that many artists have signed contracts that caused them to be stuck in for years or has tied the artist hands from furthering their careers.

(Monique)- With that being said, what is it that you could tell upcoming artists when it comes to their careers in the music business?

(Robbin)- I would like to stress that they really need to learn the business side of the music business. The record labels maybe in love with their unique sound, but at the end of the day it’s about business, making money off of the artist.

(Monique)- I completely so strong handedly agree with your answer! It is why I decided to get my masters in Entertainment Business! It is at the end of the day that no one does business with anyone without it’s real cause, and that is to make money.

(Monique)- Well, is there anything you are doing at this present time in your life that we as fans can see or hear about?

(Robbin)- As a matter of fact it’s in the making as we speak! I enrolled myself into L.A. Recording School to learn about the new music technology used in studios today. My good friend Lynn Malsby from Kylmaxx is opening a studio called The Hobby House, and I am going to be the chief engineer. The website will be up soon! It will be located where will.i.am from the group The Black Eyed Peas studios and offices are at in Atwater California. We are almost finished. Sometimes we see Leon Silvers and Stephen Shockley around there who are our friends! Lynn and I write together, so our plans are to get our songs out on the movie screens and have other artist sing them, as well as ourselves

(Monique)- That’s great! I did see Klymaxx recently on TV One on the program Unsung and that interview was great to see how everything happened. I do recommend fans to see it too.

(Robbin)- Yes, it was nice for people to see our story! I mean after all, we were happy to see artists who came after us who played instruments like Sheila E. I am excited to get in the studio and create with Lynn and others!

(Monique)- Well, we as fans can’t wait to hear your creation as well.

Everyone has singers from groups and as soloist artists who they look up to, or has looked up to. I have had the privilege and honor to talk to one of mines in which I never would have thought I would be interviewing. I was able to talk to the one and only Joi Marshall from the former all girls group JADE who was popular in 90’s with their debut song “Don’t Walk Away”. I remember singing JADE’s songs dancing and looking up to three beautiful young ladies with my friends at parties and at home. Their sound was amazing and catchy! I laugh now, but I would ask my friends, “Joi has some long braids, are those heavy”! Never the less, JADE was a group I admired and wanted to meet. I did not get to then, but later on I would not have realized that it would come true. I have not however met all three ladies, but in due time it may happen. However, I did get the honor in meeting with one of the ladies from JADE and I was shocked and happy to have met Joi Marshall. I asked Joi if I could talk to her about the group’s career in dealing with their music contract with former manager’s Irving Azoff and Cassandra Mills, and song writing. Here is our conversation:

(Monique): Who was JADE’s manager?

(Joi): We had two managers from Giant Record named Irving Azoff and Cassandra Mills. However, it was a total conflict of interest along with the deal being more one sided instead of being mutual. Both managed us for four years. Not much to talk about.

(Monique): I see. As a group, who wrote most of your songs?

(Joi): We all wrote our songs, along with other songwriters. I wrote the song “Give Me What I’m Missing”. JADE equally shared the royalties from all songs. We got paid for our songs for the airplay.

(Monique): I noticed the song “Don’t walk Away” went double platinum, what songwriter wrote that song?

(Joi): Oh! That was Vassal Benford and Ron Spearman.

(Monique): I loved that song and the other songs on the albums!

(Monique): Were you always a songwriter?

(Joi): yes! I wrote songs, and I still write songs! It is a passion that I love to do.

(Monique): Are you writing songs for yourself now to reinvent you as an artist?

(Joi): Yes, I am writing songs for myself because I plan on singing again, but more of singing spiritual songs. If you go on YouTube, you can find me singing a song I wrote called “ I Needed”

(Monique): Girl, I’ve already heard it and you sound beautiful! The song is touching.

(Monique): If there is anything you can tell inspiring artists on contract deals what would it be?

(Joi): Well, I wrote a book about that and it’s called “Answers to the 20 Most Asked Questions About The Music Business” Artists can find everything they need in my book and feel confident in having control of their music careers. I also will say, stay away from the 360 deal! It is a trap that allows the label to own everything and you would be wasting your time!

(Monique): What do Joi say to artists and inspiring artists about their fans?

(Joi): More than anything, have a relationship with your fans and be fan oriented. After all, it is the fans that make you who you are. Always follow your dreams!

(Monique): Last but not least, what can we as fans expect from Joi Marshall in the near future?

(Joi): Live events,teachings based on the call of God on my life, spiritual songs, and writing songs for other artists!

"Everyone Negotiates"

Negotiation can be a tough situation for many of us who do not know the strategy of negotiating. At some point in everyone’s life negotiation has taken place many times. Sometimes negotiation can even take place without another person involved. Whatever the formation has been, everyone has experienced the effects of negotiating something to gain or had unfair and selfish experiences with the other parties involved.

I have learned to negotiate a lot better now, but it has taken years of practice. I’ve had fair and unfair negotiations in my life, but I have learned how to be more strategic in getting better results. Recently I’ve had the honor and privilege to interview one of the music businesses most humble but talented song writer/ producer manager named Walter Canady whose work is known and well respected. I asked Walter some questions about some everyday experiences with negotiating in the music business of his own negotiations he has dealt with. I found his skill and the negotiation process quite interesting when he has to negotiate record label deals for artists and his own written songs to go on well-known artist records.

(Me) I asked Walter who are all involved in a record label deal for a promising artist to be signed?

(Walter) When it comes to signing an artist to a label there are several parties involved in getting what each party wants out of the deal. Everyone’s lawyers such as the record labels, A&R guy (Me) my lawyer, and the artist lawyer are involved in the negotiation. Everyone has certain desires that is needed and aim to be accommodated to fit what can be mutually agreed upon for the negotiation to be successful. The reasons the lawyers are in the negotiation meetings as well is to implement the necessary legal arrangements in making sure their client is being treated upon a fair benefit. In the negotiation process for signing an artist or an artist cutting another album, the label negotiates what monies will be paid up front to artist and song writers in the process to foresee their profit return increased. My deal if it is for my songs I am negotiating to be on the artist album is to negotiate up front my pay for each song with the label. I negotiate this way because it is not guaranteed the record sales will return the invested money back to the label. Most artist get paid a certain amount up front and then receive the rest of their money on the back-end of the deal by the label. Not to mention, if the album does not do well in sales the label takes a loss of their invested money.

(Me) I see! can you give me an example of this kind of negotiation and what formation of negotiation you used such as using your leverage of power and appreciation?

(Walter) Sure! In 2001, Michael Jackson negotiated with Sony Records for another album.

Michael had not been in the public’s eye in America for over ten years. The music business and music had changed in a different era. Michael needed songwriters to really reinvent him all over again. When I heard about this I immediately saw the opportunity to populate my brand with greater success by collaborating with a well-known songwriter and producer named Dr. Freeze who was known for writing songs for artists such as Bell, Biv, and Devoe on their album called “Poison”, and the group Color Me Bad on their album called “Sex You Up”. Dr. Freeze had made a reputable name for himself so I decided I wanted to write songs with him and he had agreed to write with me for Michael. We then wrote several songs for the album called “Invincible” by Michael Jackson. However, a well-known writer named Rodney Jerkins was real hot at the time and Sony’s Chief Executive Officer Tommy Mottola wanted Rodney instead of us.

In the negotiation Michael asked for Dr. Freeze and myself to write him songs but Mr. Mottola insisted that Rodney who had more leverage of power should have the most songs on the album and be paid more because of his great demand from artist and also making it political.

My writing partner Dr. Freeze and I negotiated our deal after given the opportunity by Michael to write him songs for the new album using some of our leverage of power and appreciation to Michael. Sony Records negotiated by paying us between $55,000 to $60,000 for each song, while Rodney was being paid $160,000 for six to seven songs on the album. By the time the album was finished only one of our songs we wrote was chosen to be on the album called “The Break of Dawn”. We wished we had more of our songs on the album but Mr. Mottola was not having it. Michael was upset at Mr. Mottola’s decision as well. To tell you the truth, I would have wrote songs for free for Michael just for the exposure for writing songs for Michael! I am happy that even though all of the songs we recorded did not make it on the album Dr. Freeze and I still was paid up front of our money. The album did not sale as well as Sony anticipated because of the feuding that was taking place between Michael and Mr. Mottola. There were great songs for that album and I wished Michael’s fans could have heard them! Negotiating can be beneficial in the beginning but in the end sometimes, the deal that was made can become interrupted by what is known as a deal breaker. The album “Invincible” did not get the promotion it was suppose to get because Mr. Mottola stopped it’s success by not allowing Michael to shoot video’s and stopped more albums to be sold. The album was a great album! After the controversy between Michael and Mr. Mottola Michael left Sony Records.

(Me) Well, as much as you’ve told me, and even more than what I will write about how you negotiate in the music business, I have had the pleasure in talking with you about negotiating and it’s process with deals with record labels and each party involved. I thank you for your time, and sharing with us how negotiating can be good and sometimes tough.

Today in the entertainment industry, more and more celebrities are doing reality shows based upon their own lives. There are shows such as The Kardashians, Braxton Family Values, Real House Wives of Atlanta, The Bachelor, Lisa Raye The Real McCoy, and Survivor who grabs their fans attention by allowing their everyday lives in being exposed. Some of the top reality shows is with Toni Braxton called “Braxton Family Values”, “The Kardashians”, and Lisa Raye The Real McCoy have top ratings because they keep their fans watching. For instance, on Braxton Family Values, the sister Tamar brings more drama than most soap operas that were watched during the 80’s and 90’s. Tamar is always the sister who tells everyone’s business, and makes it her business to express how she feels. Toni Braxton on the other hand, is the most laid back of her sisters who tries to keep the peace with due to their creative lifestyles. Braxton Family Values allows their fans to see the real Braxton’s and how they cope with their fame as singers and family. Take a moment to view a clip.

The Kardashions have had over five seasons showing their lifestyle to their fans. The show has allowed fans to see the Kardashians Empire and the success it has had over the years. All though the Kardashians have received the most criticism because of their spoiled behavior at times, fans continue to watch. The most popular Kardashian as we know it is Kim, because of her distinctive beauty as some have mention in the industry has allowed her fans to see she really is not snobby as some thought she was. Kim has actually been recognized as the less dramatized sister than Chloe. Take a look at this interview and you judge for yourself.

Lisa Raye the Real McCoy is viewed as the glamor girl of the reality shows. Lisa demonstrates her diva attitude. She allows her fans to see her in action with charity work, a loving mother to her only child Kai, and her hard work in show business. Lisa is all about the money, and being the best in anything she puts her hands on. She takes you on different journeys to see her in action whether it is camping, shopping, modeling shows and etc. She’s a woman who is looking for love and has no shame in expressing to her dates exactly what she wants. Whats Up With These Gas Prices?

How many times have Americans been angry for the rising gas prices? I can’t really statically answer that, but I do know we as Americans have experienced this madness of gas rising. It has affected us as an economy as a whole. Jobs have been closed, and downsized. Organizations that service customers with their vehicles have been hit harder than other organizations. Organizations such as school districts who use fuel for their buses have been affected causing the company to plan strategically on the use of their buses. It cost a at least a $100,000.00 to run a school bus for trips and routes. Airline prices are another organization that has been affected by the rising gas prices. People travel less now because the cost of traveling is greater than ever before. High fuel prices in my opinion play with the economy’s emotions. Gas stations such as Chevron, 76 Gas, Mobil, Valero, Exxon, and so on have been at their most highs in the last five years. Gas today averages out in California about $4.09 for regular and $4.19 for the super in most areas. You have exceptions that the gas is still extra high in certain upper class cities. However, in March of 2010, gas prices went down in California with the regular unleaded gas being $3.05. Around the United States in March of 2010 regular gas was $2.75, and fuel was $2.90. When can we see these kinds of prices again? What do people think of the rise of gas? <High Gas Prices>.

People have their preferences of which gas station may save them a little more money. The off brand gas stations have the nerve to be running neck and neck with the brand name gas stations. I can’t believe this. You would think the off brand gas stations would be smart enough to make their prices a little more competitive. I’ve decided to check out Exxon Mobil Gas financial statement of cash flow from the state of New York to see how much money they had made annually in the last three years. I discovered Exxon Mobil’s cash flow in 2008 net income in U.S. dollars was $45,220.00 million, 2009- 19,280.00 million, and 2010- $30,460.00 million. As you can see in 2009 Exxon Mobile suffered a big loss of money. However, Exxon Mobil’s cash from operations in 2008 was $59,725 million, 2009- $28,438.00 million, and $48, 413.00 million. I also decided to look at their total revenues for the last three years and I discovered Exxon Mobil’s biggest loss of revenues at the end of the fiscal year in December was again in 2009 with the earning of only $277,019. At the end of December of 2010 Mobil increased their revenues by over $66 million U.S. dollars in one year. All of this money made by fuel companies is due to the rise of gas and fuel. I know people are tired of being robbed and there has to be a better solution. If you know let me know. Do you wish you could change the prices yourself? Well, this news reporter tried!

Looking Past Limits

It is inspiring to me when I’ve recognized within myself and in others that going beyond limitations can be challenging, but rewarding. Limitations sometimes cause an individual to feel hopeless. Every dream you dream starts within your mind, and then the thoughts come through the mouth with a voice, after that the dream can become a reality with action behind it. There are many people in this life that are amazing to see, and hear. I often wonder though how many people go beyond their limitations that life may put on them by society, a physical handicap, or even themselves.

My mom use to tell me when I was a little girl “You can be anything you want to be, if you put your mind to it”. That’s exactly what it takes to accomplish going beyond your limitations in life. For example Steve Wonder the world superstar-recording artist shortly became blind after birth. He was gifted with a voice at an early age. Even though he was physically blind, he could see through his music. I’m sure when he set out to get a record deal he heard a lot of no’s first. At age 11, Steve was signed to Motown’s Tamla label. Steve proved to the world his physical limitations did not stop him, because not only can Steve sing, but also he can play different musical instruments.

Steve Wonder has channeled his amazing voice to sing to the world, and see the world through his music. He learned as a child to not get depressed as much because of his inability to see. Steve could see through his music, he sang his stories and others, and he did not allow his his limitations to stop him. Steve Wonder is truly a musical genius.

Looking Past Limits

As I searched though the TED website I was looking for something different that I believe would catch people’s attention for inspiration. I was inspired deeply by a speaker named Caroline Casey who is also declared legally blind in the TED website I found called "Looking Past Limits". When we have limitations it makes us feel afraid at times, and even a person may feel trapped within his and her limitations. Caroline was born blind but not completely blind with a condition called Ocular Albinism. Her parents told her as a child at three years old that she was no different than anyone else and that she could see. When Caroline was a child she said she wanted to be a biker chic, a racecar driver, and a cowgirl. She explains how she overcame the heartaches of people’s words. She learned to believe she could see through out her childhood. When it was her 17^th birthday, her parents granted her request to drive for the first time. Caroline did, but not on the streets. That same day her sister had to go and see the eye doctor. As usual Caroline said she use to get fake eye exams to make her sister feel better. However, the doctor asked Caroline what it was she wanted to do for her birthday that day. Caroline said “I’m gona learn how to drive” (Casey, C., 2010). She explains how the doctor became silent after what she said. The doctor realized that her parents never told her. The doctor felt the need to tell her she was legally blind. In her early adult life, Caroline had jobs no one never knew she was blind. She educated herself with different occupational backgrounds. After working two years as a global consultant, Caroline’s eyes began to give in more with her eyesight failing her more. She was faced with having to tell her boss that she was blind at 28 years old. She explains it was the hardest thing for her to do. Her boss was in a big shock. She humbled herself and said she needed help from a doctor; the employer had helped her, but let her go. She went on to explain how she lost her belief because her vision had gotten worst. She wondered where she went wrong. Does this sound familiar? Of course it does. Whenever we feel we have lost control we tend to freak out. After her encounter with learning her eyesight was failing her more, Caroline thought of a bright idea. Caroline decided she was going to be an elephant handler. She began to believe in herself again. She found an elephant nine months later traveling across India with the elephant raising money for six thousand people who were blind to see. Caroline then partnered with a man and started an organization called Canche named after her elephant. She wanted to share with media the awareness to knowledge disability in an exciting way. She wanted her career to be positive and not ever hearing no’s any more. Caroline is truly an amazing woman. She went the extra mile to make a difference with her disability and others. I believe this story is the same in whatever seems to be your limitations. Reach for the stars and you too can go beyond your limitations

SXSW- MusiCares

When I looked on the website sxsw.com, also known as South By SouthWest, I found the website was good for researching different entertainment information that are related for the entertainment industry. SXSW has a latest news section that changes everyday. I have became a big fan with this website because it gives you inside scoop in the entertainment industry. I was interested in the latest news on "What To Do When Your Artist Is Addicted". This has a big impact with artists more and more today, and fans have grown tired of media just pacifying artists actions. Artist management have grown weary of the epidemic of the substance abused by artist. As we all know, there has been an artist we have loved attracted the media for his or her drug and alcoholic abuse. It is a sad story when we hear it, but all too real. From Britney Spears, Michael Jackson, Rick James, Steven Tyler, Eminem, Whitney Houston, Ozzie Osborne, Courtney Love, Slash and many more artist names, makes a fan wonder, the music industry must really be about sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll.

Most managers for music artists use to be lost for thought because in their minds, they wondered what could they do to help their client?, and who do they turn to for help? Fans of the rock singer Ozzie Osborne remembers he had a drug addiction for years, but it has been over 10 years he’s been drug free. Not only are artist addicted to narcotic drugs and alcohol, but also now the trend has gone as far as prescribed medication. Managers are enrolling their clients into drug rehabs to help them. After all, artist management is trying to protect their livelihood.

The Recording Academy has made a difference in artist’s lives by reaching out to them by a foundation program that was formed by them in 1989 called <MusiCares> MusiCares is a foundation that has benefited about one million people all together. People in particular that are artist or in the industry that have lost control of their lives and careers. According to part of MusiCares mission statement “MusiCares provides a safety net of critical assistance for music people in times of need. MusiCares' services and resources cover a wide range of financial, medical and personal emergencies, and each case is treated with integrity and confidentiality” (MusiCares, 2011).

MusiCares foundation raises money, holding concerts with artist that have been admitted to get help. On May 6, 2011, MusiCares held a concert fundraiser called MAP FUND BENEFIT with well known actors and industry leaders attending. The public and media corporations stand strong behind MusiCares because of the love and dedication the foundation stands behind. The foundation is amazing for not just musicians, but anyone in the industry. MusiCares has resources to help just about every issue a person has from narcotics, sex addictions, over eaters, and eating disorders. This is the kind of action managers today are implementing for their clients, and MusiCares reputation has high standards in the entertainment industry. Madea's Big Happy Family

Madea is a character that Tyler Perry used in his plays before he became a movie producer, screen writer, actor, and director. His plays that had the Madea character intrigued people because most people could relate to Medea's character. She is someone in your family or someone you know who acts just like her. When I first saw the play Madea's Class Reunion, I could not stop laughing! I couldn't believe Tyler took a character and dressed himself up like an old lady who acted just like my auntie, and other friends family members I met growing up. All I know, after seeing my first Madea play, I was hooked to her and I have seen all the movies Tyler Perry has made. He is a talented man to me, and his homless story amazes me of how if you put your mind to whatever you want, you can do it. I can't tell you how many times when Tyler Perry puts out a movie with himself playing his Madea character I get excited. He play's this character great! I know for sure many of you know someone in your family or someone else family that act or come close to how Madea's character is. One thing I will say about her, Madea is not a complete nut case! She does have morals and compassion on helping whom she can if they demonstrate they want help. Madea deep inside cares about her family and tries to implement that, even if that means drawing her gun to get their attention in getting their life together. On April 22nd, I am happy to announce Tyler's crazy> Madea< character is off the chain in his new movie "Madea's Big Happy Family" The cast is amazing!, some of whom you've seen play in other Tyler Perry movies. Each character such as rapper Bow Wow, Loretta Devine, Cassi Davis, Shannon Kane, Rodney Perry, David Mann, Lauren London, and Tyler Perry himself bring humor, value, and entertainment in this upcoming film. Make no mistake about it, you will not leave the theatre without laughing! Make a date night with your family, friends, or that special someone and get ready to get entertained by Madea and the cast.

I know many people have been waiting for this film because as we all know, Madea can make you laugh your butt off! I never said she is a good role model like some people think an old lady should be, but after watching this movie, you can keep in mind just how crazy an old lady can get if they act anything like Madea. I know your thinking there are other movies to watch as well. Your right... just don't forget to add this to your movie list this weekend! Also check out the Play before it became a movie. Enjoy!!!

I remember growing up as a teenager
how I wanted to be the next Janet. She
was one of the best female dancers as an artist.

I do remember Paula Abdul being one of
Janet's choreographer's. Jimmy Jam and Terry
Lewis was Janet's main producers for most of
her career.

All the music Janet Jackson has given her fans
have been seductive, sexy, personal, and entertaining.
She has had long Longevity in her career taking her
fans higher on her journey with her style of music.
I love her energy and hard work because she has paved the way for new artists.
Janet continues to improve her career re- innovating herself, and amazing her fans as she explore her new 2011 world tour. Tell us Janet what are you doing for your fans beginning in 2011!
