I won't lie to you folks. This has been a good week. I mean, in spite of the fact that next weekend is Megacon, our first convention for 2012, and I haven't properly buffered my strips yet, which means the pre convention panic is yet to settle in and all.... it's been a good week. Or at least I feel good for the moment, which I can roll with.

Last Sunday there was a big football game. Really big. A 'Superbowl', if you will. And as such there's been a lot of sports news this week. Considering I know little about sports and care less, I'm gonna go with some sports-esque news that interested me this week.

The unambiguously awesome duo of Paul and Storm have begun an online petition to get the Weird One himself, Al Yankovic, to perform next year's Superbowl half time show. This is the first time I actually would bother to watch a football game. I don't even care about all the 'new amazing commercials' hype. But Weird Al? I am THERE. You can be a hater if you want, but there's no denying his incredibly successful career and all around nice guy credentials. I would love to see this happen.

In something else I would like to see happen, a new sports event is in ascendance in the world! Ultimate Tazer Ball!

Yes. Tazers.

Teams of four athletes, armed with tazers, manoeuver an oversized heavy ball across a field to score goals. All players are armed with low energy tasers. Not enough to knock you out, but enough to cause a significant muscle spasm, pain and temporary numbness.

Seriously. I couldn't make this stuff up. I'm not that smart.

Currently, there are only four North American franchises so lots of room for newcomers if you are of a mind to invest in the world of professional sports.

Bridging the gap from sports to comics fandom, Chris Hardwick, the Nerdist, has paired his talent with ReedPop, the company that puts on such great comic cons like NYCC and SDCC. In an effort to not only excite the fans but do some good in the world, Hardwick announced the 'Course for the Force' this week. A running-of-the-torch like marathon for the five days leading up to this season's San Diego Comic Con. However, instead of a torch, runners will be wielding a lightsaber!! All the monies raised from the walk/run and a portion of merchandise sales will be going to the Make A Wish Foundation for their good deeds. How incredible will this be for all involved?! Makes me wish I was fit.

Well I may be no Chris Hardwick but I too have nerdity to share tonight on my Ustream! The preshow music starts 15-20 minutes before the webcam goes live at 8pm ET. The mods will be along with banhammers for the naughty spammers and jips, japes and smiles for everyone else. Why not log into the chatroom and make some new friends? I'll have the drawing board all warmed up and the kittycam ready in case any of my furry family decides to drop by.

Clueless

I have no idea what's going on in the world this week. No, not like "THE WORLD HAS GONE CAH-RAAAAZY!" but like "I haven't been paying attention." Most of this week has been focused on finally getting the Eighth LICD annual out the door (finally) so my nose has been to the virtual grindstone while my ears have been filled with old podcasts to catch up on and Star Wars movies. There's been some personal stuff, nothing earth shattering. Sometimes I wonder if I'm the only cartoonist who hasn't suffered a traumatic childhood.

My mom is moving into a retirement home. I'm strangely un-melancholy about this. While it was the only home I ever knew growing up, and my folks continued to live there after we were all gone (47 years) I've lived longer away from there as a married man. My home is now here with my wife and daughters and cats. My mom is healthy and happy for the move so I'm happy for her. My siblings and I have been making trips into the old house to help her clean stuff out or cart stuff away and it's sure to sell well. I also went for my annual blood work. It's an old man thing. Results next week. Sohmer has promised if I get breast cancer he'll laugh at me. What a pal.

So there were more primaries, more Trump, more criminals posting their crimes on Facebook and then being all surprised when they got busted....

Seriously, children. Aren't you supposed to be the technical generation? Dumb as a bucket of hair the lot of you.....

About the only thing that really caught my attention this week, aside from formatting errors and typos in InDesign, was the re-discovery of Mona Lisa's twin!! Yes, the famous painting by daVinci has a twin in the Museo del Prado in Madrid, Spain. Now there are hundreds of copies of the Mona Lisa in the world but conservators have determined that this particular one was painted AT THE SAME TIME by one of daVinci's students. The really exciting thing is that the painting, having been ignored in a basement vault for many years, is in remarkably good condition. Unlike the Mona Lisa, which has suffered the touch of clumsy art restorers over time and has darkened due to bad varnishings, the copy is reputed to be very vivid and detailed. It will soon be on loan to the Louvre for a special exhibition.

And speaking of clumsy artists (and clumsy segues!) tonight is another Ustream! Just as I have no idea what's going on in the world I'm not sure what I'll be loading up on the drawing board just yet. Lots of light news this week. Between the Chinese New Year (year of the Dragon, which is cool Dragons are cool) to Robbie Burns day for the Scots, and a new Republican debate every night apparently, it's hard to winnow out anything interesting.

Well of course there is Lindsay Lohan news, but it's kinda old. She's getting sued for nearly running over a toddler a year or so back. She's been behaving herself lately, doing her probation stuff so I hope this is a good sign for her. And of course, she still looks terrific for a 45 year old Palm Beach socialite. It's a shame she's only 25...

SOPA/PIPA has been momentarily shelved in the USA, while ACTA, a bigger badder global version got passed by several European countries. However this didn't stop the FBI from exploring the possibility of 'scraping' information on citizens from social media. I don't honestly know why they'd bother as it seems that unless terrorists start a meme, the smart ones don't use social media and the stupid ones aren't bright enough to use the Internet. Overall though, it wouldn't be a bad time to re-evaluate your personal security settings on Facebook, Twitter etc.

And yes, I got to meet Harley and the crew from EpicMealTime but if you want to hear that story you'll have to tune into the ustream tonight.

HA! Not a segue but a damn fine lead in!

Yes, I got to hang out with Harley and his crew along with the members of the band Down With Webster Sunday night. In addition to being a fantastic fantasy author, having a beard that (almost) rivals that of our own Lar (but doesn’t. No worries there), my buddy Pat Roothfus does a great amount of work with his Wordbuilders foundation, which was created to support Heifer International.

Happy Penguin Awareness Day!

Seriously. Why would I make that up?

The close of another week and here in Southern Ontario winter has finally noticed that it hadn't visited properly yet. While there's not a lot of snow in my neck of the woods, the temperatures have dropped and the wind has risen making it pretty darn chilly out there. I think I speak for a lot of people when I say 'I GET THE IDEA! I CAN HAZ SPRING NAO?'

Even though spring and summer are far off, it's been a fairly busy week in terms of convention planning already. You may not have thought of these things before but to make it to a show there is a lot more logistics to shipping and travel plans than just buying a ticket. Sohmer, Becker and the rest of the Blind Ferret Family have been running full steam. It's one of the few times I'm glad to be the odd man out, geographically, so I'm not underfoot. It's a little lonely but they're only an email away after all.

In other 'odd man out' news (segue! drink!) it came to light this week that *gasp* Khloe Kardashian is not a fully blooded officer of the first family of fame-mongering!

Hm... tiny sister, tiny sister... GINORMOUS MAN-HANDS WOMAN SISTAH! Who could have foreseen it?

But the best rumor so far, and the only complete article I have read to date that was about the Kardashians, is that OJ Simpson may be the father! Whoo hoo!! This is more hilarious than him losing his house since he's locked in jail on break and enter charges. Oh I'm a terrible person.

Oh stop it. I posted an article on 'merkins' to my twitter feed earlier this week. Trust me. I'm terrible. (Google that at your own risk).

And a last bit of school news. A high school in Utah recently had their student body vote on a new mascot. The popular vote was for the Cougars, since the school is close to Brigham Young University and their team is the cougars. However, the one woman on the seven seat school board felt that the modern interpretation of 'cougar' as a sex hungry middle aged lady was 'inappropriate' and forced the school to change the mascot to 'charger'. Way to rock the vote ma'am.

I admit I have a soft spot for the charger (usually depicted as a stallion, not a muscle car) as my own high school used that clip art. However, given the board's concern with modern definitions I'm more than a little shocked they didn't double check if 'charger' now carries any connotations. You see, according to the Urban dictionary, not only can a charger be:
"A small cylindrical object that can be filled with money or drugs and inserted into the anus to conceal their whereabouts from the police/prison guards etc. As described in the classic French book ''Papillon''."

but is also synonymous with:
"an early morning blow job to start your day."

Now that you're planning your morning, why don't I make a suggestion for your night? Tonight is Friday so that means I'm ustreaming! Hey folks,

Winding up another week at the homestead and raring to start my weekend with the evening Ustream. See! You were expecting a seque at the end of the page, weren't you? Wait for it....

In a weird moment this afternoon I realized that we're only a month away from the annual Valentine's day contest at LICD.com. It's always a fun time for us to go through your entries so here's a couple tips if you're thinking about entering this year.

1) DO NOT suggest a storyline. That's Sohmer's job. Just be as interesting as you can in your description. We'll do the rest.
2) DO send in a good face shot. That's my job and it's been frustrating in the past to have to discard an interesting applicant because I couldn't make out their damn face.
3) DO feel free to include shots of gratuitious nudity. It doesn't even have to be of your own body. The boys at the office get lonely... I'm just sayin'...

Here's one fellow probably won't be applying. News out of Kentucky this week introduces us to an Iranian man who decided to get a penis tattoo. Go ahead. I'll wait for you to stop screaming.

Yes, there were complications. Continue screaming.

Okay, so after deep tissue bleeding and some surgery the end result isn't so bad. Mr. O'Crazy had to have a shunt inserted into his man-hurt to correct the medical issues, leaving him a permanent state of 'half mast'. Not the worst that could have happened to him but I expect he just has to remember not to stand up too quickly. He should probably also get a urinal installed at home.

And just to be sexist, here's a lady I wouldn't mind seeing apply for the contest. Hazel Jones of England has two vaginas. Boom! I said it. Right there. I don't understand the science but she's perfectly fine, quite lovely and happens to have a double set of pipes down there. Oh for Rayne to be twins!!

Most of the news floating around this week has been from the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and while there have been gadgets and toys aplenty, there's one item that definitely caught my sense of humour. "OhMiBod", maker of wireless music controlled vibrators, announced a new product called the Freestyle. There are three models and a 99cent app to control the types of vibrations as well as allow you to customize the patterns on the fly. Angry Birds won't have a chance. But in more iOS news...

A Bear Print

A few weeks ago, I showed off a few more pages ofThe Bear, a new parent/childrens book Im doing with Becky Dreisdadt.

I was rather skittish about sharing pages, as its obviously a series close to my heart, and one whose reception I wasnt sure of. Still, the kind words were overwhelming and it was gratifying to know I wasnt the only new parent on the planet with these thoughts.

While were awaiting the book to come out (mid-2012), we wanted to offer you something unique.

I chose 10 pages from the Bear, and had them printed out on high-end canvas paper, making them perfect for framing. These are art prints at their finest, and Im insanely pleased with how they look.

These pages/prints/paintings are available for sale in the BFE Shop, and they can be signed by me upon request.

Epiphany!

Epiphany

Epiphany is a great word. It means several things - like the Christian Festival of the Three Wise Men, which is coincidentally this weekend - but most often refers to a sudden insightful revelation. An 'eureka' moment. We all love such discoveries that fill us with wonder and excitement. Sometimes though, that revelation can be terrifying.

The first week of 2012 has been pretty uneventful, well, unless you count the continuing turmoil in Pakistan, Iraq, Iran etc etc. I think a few epiphanies there would do a world of good. Unfortunately, while the general populace seems to have reached the point of "Hey! Our society has problems! Let's fix 'em! Rawr!", the armies and despotic politicos remain with their heads firmly entrenched up their asses.

Another sad epiphany is occurring over at Kodak, once a leader in photography and imaging. The company is possibly preparing for bankruptcy. As an artist, I know a little of its legacy and history, but with the advent of cheap and powerful digital imaging, the need for film just isn't relevant and competition from other imaging companies too great. And who needs the brutal honesty of a shutter when we can have the pleasing numbness of a Photoshopped reality. Yes, I'm looking at you Lindsay.

So much for epiphanies. But for laughs, there's always the 'No Shit, Sherlock' moments.

For example, Michigan police arrested a man named (I'm not kidding here) Beezow Doo-Doo Zopittybop-Bop-Bop on drug charges. Mr Zopittybop-Bop-Bop had changed his name legally some years ago and was known to police. If a name like Zopittybop-Bop-Bop doesn't inspire trust and confidence, I don't know what else would.

However, as a cartoonist I could probably triple my rates with a name like that.

Speaking of laughs (yes I'm still working on those transitions!) my weekly Ustream often manages to provide a few chuckles (and sometimes an artistic epiphany) to all involved. Starting at 8pm ish ET I'll be back online doodling away and sharing music and words with anyone willing to listen. Another year rings to a close

At this time of year the news cycles are winding down and everyone is concerned with time. Looking back, looking forward, making lists. It seems so important to review and reflect but let's face it. None of us are really paying attention either. It's just noise to fill up more time until New Year's passes and everyone can get back to work or school and life picks up again.

One noteworthy time story comes from the south Pacific islands of Samoa who are flipping themselves from one side of the International Date Line to the other, aligning their calendar with their nearer Australian and New Zealand neighbours, rather than the United States, who have become less of an economic partner to them. Workers will still get paid for the missing day but I pity any mother in labour getting an extra 24 hours tacked onto her delivery by the tick of the clock.

From the dawn of time, researchers in Scotland have found a faceless, brainless fish, long thought to be extinct, in the waters off Tankerness in Orkney. Apparently this creature was the first species to evolve a spinal cord like structure. No word on how it tasted, battered and deep fried with chips.

And the food segue brings me to my favorite story this week and time for the most important meal of the day. At least to Montrealers - brunch!! A restaurant in a Montreal borough has been banned from serving their signature dishes. Or rather, the servers have been banned from serving the dishes.... topless. The Restaurant Les Princesses had been serving up eggs, bacon and pancakes by topless staff for eleven years now and someone just decided that wasn't okay anymore. I'm not sure entirely how I feel about this though. Part of me resents Sohmer and the BFE gang for never taking me there for brunch when I was in town. Part of me wonders if I really would enjoy a pair of jumblies with my morning coffee. It seems kind of unsanitary.

And in one final 'no time for this nonsense' - Mayan calendar. Prophecies of doooooom. Yawn.

But what is not a foregone prophecy is that I'll be Ustreaming tonight! (okay, sorry. Not one of my better tie ins, I'll admit...) I had to put off last week's stream, much to my disappointment, but the holidays were just frantic at that point. Tonight we can chill back, relax and I'll do my best to answer some great art questions that have been sent my way in an End of the Year Art SpectacuLar!! I'll be discussing things like simple light and shading, drawing hair and beards, simple cartoon perspective and more! I'll also be giving away print pack prizes AAAAAND....something more that you'll have to tune in to find out and have your chance to win. The Mod Pod will be hanging out keeping the party going in the chat room so you know we'll be free from spammers and Ocean Marketting style idiots.

I'm dreaming of a dry Christmas

I don't know about you but hereabouts the idea of snow is still pretty far away. Yes, I live in Canada, which no doubt is locked in your minds as being perpetually buried beneath glistening mounds of snow and ice, as moose and beaver walk the streets and bears scrounge in the garbage alongside the raccoons and the occasional singing chipmunk.

This is not so. At least, not right now.

It's cold, but not super cold. And it's WET. We've had rain most of this week so what little dustings we've had this month are long washed away and the horrible evidence that I never did clean my gutters of fall leaves haunts me with drips above the porch and garage. But outside sucks anyhow, which is why I am a cartoonist with a large posterior. I wobble, but I won't fall down!

The big news for us this week is our latest family member, Cleo, is now six months old and went to the vet on Monday to be fixed. The poor kitten is stuck with a cone on her head for the next week as the stitches heal. She's recovering very nicely though and in no distress from her operation, other than said cone. It makes a sound like propellor when she shakes her head and we have begun to affectionately call her our little Buckethead. I'm more concerned that she will explode with pent up energy once it comes off next Friday, just in time for holiday visitors. Until then at least, our Christmas tree remains safe.

In the larger world we've said goodbye to a few more greats. No, not Christopher Hitchens. He was great for a sound bite and angry discourse to get the blood boiling but whenever I heard him, he was debating some media hack who just wasn't in his league. It made it too easy for him. On the rare time I did hear him face off against a well spoken, well read opponent, it was wonderful and honestly, over my head. No I refer to Joe Simon, the co-creator of Captain America (along with Jack Kirby) and one of the last of our golden age comics creators. (Honestly, if you are into comics, do yourself a favour and look him up) I had a the fortune two years ago at NYCC to shake his hand at an unanticipated book signing. It was disappointing that his line was so short but even then he was in his 90s and not physically energetic. I think the publishers deliberately played the event low key so as not to overtax him. But he was warm and personable to each person in line. There is a charisma to some people - a charm brought upon them from their own talent and their ability to listen to others. It is something to aspire to.

And if you're in the mood to aspire to listen, well tonight I can help you out! (Another good segue Lar!) Yes, it's Friday and that means another Ustream! Starting at 8pm till midnight ET, I'll be online drawing Christmas cuties and doing my best to yak non stop. Not much to discuss this week I'm afraid. Well unless you believe that Lindsay Lohan's Playboy cover was leaked and not simply handed over to the media by her agent.

She's the gift that just keeps giving.

The European Union is struggling to sort out their economic woes but I won't insult anyone by pretending to know the details or even attempt to comment wryly upon them. I just hope that they get their house in order. National borders may still exist but economic ones don't. I hope there are enough smart people out there to do the work needed. And somewhere rich basketball people have talked to other rich basketball people and realized no one cares enough about them not being as rich as they want to be and therefore are going back to work before they lose anymore money in their gigantic pissing game.

Wry comment or wry comment? Amirite!?

Today I headed out the door early up to Montreal to spend a wonderful day signing an incredible number of books alongside Sohmer. Outside of conventions, I rarely get to just hang out with these folks, which is my loss. All hands were on deck to keep the assembly line of unpacking, stacking, signing, restacking, repacking and labelling moving smoothly. Pizza was had! Much loud music was played to keep our morale high, and Sohmer won a game of gay chicken with Will. I'm not sure Will knew they were playing though.

In a short while I will be jetting back home so this is really just a post to tell you that while I will jump on Ustream tonight for awhile it won't be until closer to 10pm instead of my usual 8pm.
