JOICO Makes-over Canadian Figure Skater Joannie Rochette As She Gets Ready to ‘Go for Gold’!

Marc Galati, owner and stylist of Headlines Salon & Spa in Stouffville, ON had the difficult task of giving 2009 World Champion Silver Medalist Joannie Rochette a makeover. It was difficult because the petite blonde looked good when she walked through the door.

“Joannie has gorgeous eyes and a great complexion so I really wanted to bring these out,” says Galati. “I used pale blonde and accented tones of coffee and hazelnut from the Vero K-PAK colour collection to brighten up her look. As for the style, I wanted to give her a fun and trendy style, but still give her the flexibility to pull her hair back when she competes.”

Rochette and JOICO have partnered up to ‘Go for Gold’ this year. Rochette will be going for the gold medal at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics while JOICO is proud to introduce a new line to its gold-standard K-PAK collection called K-PAK Color Therapy.

“We really wanted to make a statement and support our Canadian athletes,” says Nataly Avila, Piidea Marketing Manager. “And it really made sense to us to pair up with Rochette, who is a leader in her sport, with our K-PAK brand that is a leader in our industry.”

Rochette, a 23-year old Quebec native, has been skating since the age of 22 months. The ABA Show of 2009 was exciting, fun and informative. Looks-magazine had an awesome time taking in the creative stylists, latest hairstyles and newest products from nails to skin to hair.

OPI, most popular for its Axxium soak-off Gel Lacquer-long lasting color creates strength for nail enhancement. For 8 years, "I’m not really a waitress" remains its most popular color. The sheer popular colors are bubblebath and passion. The most popular exotic colors (OPI bights) are blow my mind and tangerine dream-younger generation loves since bright and funky. The popular darker colors- lincoln park after dark or lincoln park after midnight-good for people who have shorter nails or those that want a pop. Take your nails to the beach line: the favorite color now is Russian Navy, and Cajun Shrimp. So dive into the ocean and notice how well they stay on!

Products are made in Israel, but this now Canadian Company based in Montreal has been going for 3 years strong. It is called Moroccan Oil, probably because it uses Organ oil which comes from Morocco (where name is based from). All alcohol free, but the signature product is the Oil treatment that is rich is anti-oxidants, and vitamin E, thus nourishing hair. It is used in multiple conditions-such as wet, dry, before or after blow drying, as a mask for all hair textures- thin, thick, short, course, etc.

NCA/Sally Beauty Award Scholarships

Mark Goodman, president of the National Cosmetology Association (NCA), and Mike Spinozzi, president of Sally Beauty Supply, announced the winners of the NCA Sally Beauty Excel Scholarships. Almost 200 applications were received.
Five $1,000 scholarships were awarded to high school graduates, under the age of 26, desiring to enter the cosmetology profession. The 2009 winners are:

The National Cosmetology Association’s (NCA) 4th International Charity Ball will take place on August 2, 2009, at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Chicago, in conjunction with SalonLife ‘09.

At this gala event, the industry will join together to honor “Legend” Conair Corp.’s founder/owner, Leandro “Lee” P. Students rally for children in Uganda Joico is proud to support their efforts

After viewing the documentary Invisible Children, a group of McMaster University students were deeply moved by the story of war affected children in Northern Uganda. They decided to do something about it.
They started a McMaster University Chapter of Invisible Children and on Saturday, March 14, 2009 held their first-ever Peace of Chic fashion event to help raise funds.

“Our objective is to give these children the opportunity for quality education and provide them with the necessary resources to attend school,” says Peace of Chic Executive Director Zhen Jiwa. “Through activism, fundraising and awareness campaigns, we strive to challenge our fellow students at McMaster and the community as a whole to personally participate in changing the future of these children’s lives.”

When Jiwa approached Joico if they would help support their event, Joico responded with a resounding yes. In little time, Joico provided gift bags for all attendees at the Peace of Chic fashion show, styling products for the models, and four gift baskets for the silent auction.

The event raised more than $3,000, which has already been forwarded to the Invisible Children NGO who will use the money to build libraries in Uganda. The event was attended by nearly 300 students, the Dean of the Degroote McMaster University Business School, and fashion designer Jason Myers.

“We believe the story of these children will serve to make the McMaster community more conscious of global injustices, and encourage them to become more politically active. For those already involved with the Invisible Children chapter at McMaster, the story of the children in Northern Uganda has changed their views about the world,” says Jiwa. “We hope it will reach the hearts of others and call on them to make a difference in the lives of the under-privileged, through community involvement.”

Although the daily defense serum contains a lot of the same ingredients as the wrinkle release pen, there are some differences. The serum is more diluted compare to the pen and extremely smoother. The serum is used after cleansing the face, and then applying it to the fine line areas. After a month use, wrinkles are less intense and results are more noticeable. The packaging for the defense serum was a little disappointing for me. I accidentally dropped the bottle on the ground while opening and broke the glass stick on the cap used to pick up the serum. The glass piece ends up inside my serum making it very dangerous to use. Besides the bad packaging, I love the silkiness this product leaves on the skin –feels like a baby’s bottom!

Color Blending complements an angular bob by creating a halo of color on the bevel of the head resulting in a fabulous effect of shine that radiates around the entire perimeter.

First, hair is sectioned in a diamond shape on top of the head, then three color formulas are applied as separate strips in each foil beginning with the first side of the panel. Color is randomly applied to three more slices of hair and then this step is repeated on each side of the diamond. Finally, a fourth color formula is applied throughout the remaining hair. Without a specific pattern dictating the color placement, hair blends together naturally for a multi-dimensional wood grain effect.

COLOR SEQUENCING

Balance brunettes with luxuriously rich layers of color.

Semi-precious stones such as brown topaz, tiger-eye and yellow diamonds, inspire this service and create refined, yet indulgent color. Layering on warm, rich shades from the Rich Naturals tonal pillar, the Color Sequencing technique achieves a balanced, multi-dimensional effect that looks phenomenal on long, layered hair with a deep side-part.

First, hair on top of the head is sectioned off into a horseshoe shape that narrows toward the rear. Four formulas are alternated along the top left diagonal until the entire side is complete. This alternating pattern is repeated along the opposite side. A fifth formula is applied throughout the rest of the hair and processed for 30-40 minutes.

COLOR TIDES

A warm spectrum of a fiery sun comes to life in Vibrant Reds through a crescent panel in this color service. The Color Tides technique features tones of red, copper, and gold that go across the head to accentuate a short, layered cut.

Beginning with a crescent panel around the curvature on top of the head, alternate between three color formulas until the entire section is covered. Apply the fourth formula throughout the rest of the hair and process for 30-40 minutes.

PRISMATIC COLOR

Rich chocolates create a seductive multi-dimensional effect.

Faceted like a diamond, light to dark shades from the Deep Browns pillar distinguish the Prismatic Color technique. A triangular placement of color and contrasting shades generate virtual 4D depth for the sultry brunette. This immersion of color suits mid to shoulder length hair.

Hair is sectioned along the natural part into three triangular panels. Within the front panel, color is applied from top to point and continues with back-to-back-slices alternating with the second formula. A second row of triangles below is repeated with the same alternating color formulas. After repeating this process again on the opposite sides of the triangles, the third formula is applied throughout the rest of the hair and processed for 30-40 minutes.

This technique begins by sectioning hair into a star-shape at the top of the head to pre-lighten hair with Blondor. Once desired level of lightening is achieved, four formulas are then applied in a pattern of diagonal slices pivoting around the crown area. All remaining hair is colored with one last formula and then processed for 30 minutes.
