Hasbro Star Wars 6-Inch a Reality – Announces Black Series on USAToday.com

2013-01-30T05:27:00.001-08:00

Hasbro Star Wars 6-Inch a Reality – Announces Black Series on USAToday.com:
Yes, the rumors of 6-inch Star Wars figures are true, and it looks like Hasbro has given the nod to Gentle Giant.
I thought we would have to wait for Toy Fair in a couple of weeks for confirmation, but Hasbro announced the Star Wars Black Series on USAToday.com. While the article says that the line will focus on the original trilogy, the first wave of four figures will include Episode 1 baddie, Darth Maul. Rounding out the first wave due in August are X-Wing Luke (shown at the right), R2-D2, and an Imperial Sandtrooper, with a planned retail price of $19.99 each. Hasbro is planning a second wave of four figures before the end of the year.
Although Hasbro referenced Marvel Legends, it does not look like the Black Series will incorporate the Build-A-Figure concept. Could you imagine a 6-inch scaled Rancor?
I’m sure there will be lots more questions, but at top of mind for me right now are these two. First, with the line launching so close to San Diego Comic-Con, will we see an SDCC exclusive to really kick this line off? And second, Hasbro always announces a huge vehicle at Toy Fair – could it be something in the 6-inch scale this time around?

Hasbro unveils ‘Star Wars’ Black Series action figures
New toys are on a bigger scale and will focus on characters from the original movie trilogy.
After 35 years of fantastic plastic standing tall in pop culture at 3¾ inches, Hasbro is releasing the Star Wars Black Series this year, beginning a new set of 6-inch figures that will feature more articulation and an increased attention to detail.
Priced at $19.99 each, eight figures are planned for 2013 — Hasbro will primarily draw characters from the original Star Wars trilogy of films while also bringing in key players from the prequels.

The first wave of four, due out in early to mid-August, includes Luke Skywalker in his X-Wing Fighter flight suit, fan-favorite droid R2-D2, bad guy Darth Maul and an Imperial Sandtrooper.
“We consider them the best figures that Hasbro’s ever produced for Star Wars that meets the sensibilities of romancing the character as well as the playability and poseability that fans really appreciate,” says Derryl DePriest, Hasbro vice president of boys marketing.
Hasbro has had success with the scale before with the 6-inch Marvel Legends figures based on Marvel Comics heroes and villains. In terms of Star Wars, though, the Black Series will act as a transitional point between the 3¾-inch toys — “which is rooted in the childhood memories of generations of now-grown kids,” DePriest says — and the 12-inch Sideshow Collectibles figures for adult collectors.
The current “vintage”-style line of 3¾ figures will also continue under the Black Series banner.
Whether it’s holding a blaster or a lightsaber, Luke Skywalker is ready for action in his X-Wing Fighter outfit as part of the ‘Star Wars’ Black Series.(Photo: Hasbro)
In creating something new and different with Star Wars, the color black became an inspiration for toy designers, DePriest says. “It’s one of the main colors of Star Wars all the way back to the beginning, and it’s the approach that Lucasfilm has taken with their collector-oriented product line. We’re bringing that simplicity and essence and focus on the character now to the toy aisle.”
The Black Series appeals to those newbies who want to start a series from the start as well as those hardcore collectors who gobble up anything having to do with the words “Jedi” or “Empire” and “are looking for something new and their interest isn’t as piqued by the 15th cantina alien we have yet to do,” DePriest says. “We realize folks want their iconic characters delivered up in a new way.”
With Star Wars: Episode VII coming from new Star Wars director J.J. Abrams in a couple of years, as well as comics, novels and other media adding to the universe George Lucas started in 1977, it’s a good time to figure out different scales and toys for the next generation of Star Wars fan, according to DePriest.
Before then, however, the Black Series also gives a chance for parents to connect with their own little Star Wars fans.
“Our focus here is the adult collector, the dad,” DePriest says. “We know they have their own generation of youngsters they like to share the adventure with. It can be something for dad, and the 3¾ world can be something for the kids to share.”

Disney Issues Press Release Confirming J.J. Abrams For ‘Star Wars Episode VII’

2013-01-26T07:15:00.001-08:00

Disney Issues Press Release Confirming J.J. Abrams For ‘Star Wars Episode VII’:

Disney just issued the final press releasing confirming that J.J. Abrams will, indeed, be directing Star Wars Episode VII. It includes quotes from Abrams, George Lucas, Kathleen Kennedy and confirms that Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are consulting on the film. Read it below, along with quotes from Star Wars veterans Dennis Muren, Ben Burtt and Matthew Wood.
Here’s the press release:

J.J. Abrams will direct Star Wars: Episode VII, the first of a new series of Star Wars films to come from Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy. Abrams will be directing and Academy Award-winning writer Michael Arndt will write the screenplay.
“It’s very exciting to have J.J. aboard leading the charge as we set off to make a new Star Wars movie,” said Kennedy. “J.J. is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture.”
George Lucas went on to say “I’ve consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller. He’s an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn’t be in better hands.”
“To be a part of the next chapter of the Star Wars saga, to collaborate with Kathy Kennedy and this remarkable group of people, is an absolute honor,” J.J. Abrams said. “I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid.”
J.J., his longtime producing partner Bryan Burk, and Bad Robot are on board to produce along with Kathleen Kennedy under the Disney | Lucasfilm banner.
Also consulting on the project are Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg. Kasdan has a long history with Lucasfilm, as screenwriter on The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Return of the Jedi. Kinberg was writer on Sherlock Holmes and Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
Abrams and his production company Bad Robot have a proven track record of blockbuster movies that feature complex action, heartfelt drama, iconic heroes and fantastic production values with such credits as Star Trek, Super 8, Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, and this year’s Star Trek Into Darkness. Abrams has worked with Lucasfilm’s preeminent postproduction facilities, Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound, on all of the feature films he has directed, beginning with Mission: Impossible III. He also created or co-created such acclaimed television series as Felicity, Alias, Lost and Fringe.

And here are some quotes from Star Wars veterans on working with Abrams from the official site:

Visual Effects Supervisor Dennis Muren, ASC, whose credits include the original Star Wars trilogy as well as landmark films such as E.T. and Jurassic Park, also worked with Abrams on Super 8. “He puts everything he has into his work,” said Muren. “He totally immerses himself. He’s got such a visual eye, which is so important to the Star Wars films. It seems that a lot of the same things that were in George when he made the first Star Wars films are also in J.J. I think he’s going to fit into the other movies perfectly, with the energy that J.J. has. We’re kick-starting Star Wars again with dynamite. It will knock people out, including the people who get to work on it. I think it’s a great choice.”
Ben Burtt, responsible for such iconic Star Wars sounds as Darth Vader’s breathing, R2-D2′s beeps and the classic lightsaber, has worked with Abrams as sound designer and sound editor on Star Trek and Super 8. “J.J represents the next generation of filmmakers from those that were making Star Wars when I started,” said Ben Burtt. “When he was a teen, he was a fan of Star Wars, and a great deal of his love for movies came out of his reaction of that first Star Wars film. You feel that he’s already invested so many years in it, and he’s going to propel it forward in a new way. In other words, you’re having a fan who has grown up and developed tremendous directorial skills finding himself at the steering wheel to take the franchise into the next stage. I feel like I’m there watching history turn over from one era to another.”
Matthew Wood, who served as supervising sound editor on Super 8, similarly grew up as a Star Wars fan before working on the films through the prequels. “Working with him, it was so obvious to me that J.J. and I have the same nostalgic love of that era. Now we have someone from that generation who is going to be at the helm of the Star Wars franchise that I’ve known and worked on, so it’s a great circle. Just seeing what he did with Super 8 and capturing those moments, and knowing what was so special about that era, it’s going to speak to a new generation of audience as well.”

‘Pacific Rim’ Trailer: Giant Robots Beat Down Giant Monsters Under the Eye of Guillermo del Toro

2012-12-12T16:33:00.002-08:00

‘Pacific Rim’ Trailer: Giant Robots Beat Down Giant Monsters Under the Eye of Guillermo del Toro:

Here’s the first trailer for Guillermo del Toro‘s “giant monsters versus giant robots” film Pacific Rim. We’ve seen blueprints of the robots, and an early bit of video showing a monster attack, but unless you were at Comic Con you haven’t seen anything like this footage yet.
While I wasn’t as bowled over at Comic Con as some other people were, this is pushing every button for me right now. The scope, the details, even the GLaDOS appearance/homage. (I can see why people might not like that detail, but right now I love it.)
Pacific Rim looks like the movie that many others have tried and failed to make, from Emmerich’s Godzilla (a big failure) to Bay’s Transformers series, which got closer. I hope Guillermo del Toro’s effort works as well as a whole, as this trailer does in a couple minutes.

Big question: who’s the “they” mentioned by Idris Elba in the voiceover? Should we read that as implying that the monsters are more intelligent than they seem? Or is there a controlling force of some sort? Are the monsters just the first wave of attack?
Pacific Rim stars Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, and Charlie Day, and will be released in 2D and 3D on July 12, 2013.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Foxx Confirmed For Electro

2012-12-04T01:57:00.001-08:00

Foxx Confirmed For Electro:
Jamie Foxx has some electrifying news for ET: He will definitely be starring in the sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man!
“Electro is a great character,” Jamie tells ET’s Nancy O’Dell when she asks him if he’s confirmed to be in the next installment of the blockbuster franchise “I met with the director, Mark Webb, I met with Andrew Garfield, and we talked. … I think Electro will be an exciting character to play because he’s a … genius electrician-type person, and he gets the short end of the stick from the whole world, and the next thing you know he turns it on.”
Rumors had been swirling for quite some time that Jamie would be taking on the role of Spidey’s nemesis, and he fueled the fire the day after Halloween when he tweeted that he dressed up as the character.
Plus, Webb alluded to the super-villain being a part of the next movie while promoting the upcoming release of The Amazing Spider-Man on Blu-ray and listing his favorite villains: “I like Green Goblin. I like Electro a lot. I think Electro is pretty fantastic.”
Earlier today it was announced today that Chronicle and Lincoln star Dane Dehaan will join the super sequel as Harry Osborn, with Webb tweeting, “Meet Harry Osborn. So excited to have him on board. @danedehaan.”
Of course, Spidey fans know that Harry Osborn is the son of Norman Osborn, who becomes The Green Goblin, and Harry himself eventually becomes the super-villain Hobgoblin. So who are the official baddies of the next Spider-Manfilm? No actual names have been announced, but the information is all there for those who want to connect the dots.

Also starring Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx and Shailene Woodley, the new film in the Spider-Man saga is set for release in 3D on May 2, 2014. Production will begin in early 2013.

S.W.O.R.D. Showing Up In THOR: THE DARK WORLD Or GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY?

2012-11-29T16:39:00.001-08:00

S.W.O.R.D. Showing Up In THOR: THE DARK WORLD Or GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY?:

EW has posted a deleted/alternative ending to Thor which shows Erik Selvig (Skarsgard) speaking to S.H.I.E.L.D. agents/scientists to put together an experiment. He references the S.W.O.R.D. database which refers to the extraterrestrial arm of S.H.I.E.L.D. An organization created by Joss Whedon during his run of the X-Men comics. The group was oddly never mentioned during the events of Avengers so it could mean they are being saved for Phase Two films.

The two films that make the most sense is Thor: The Dark World and Guardians of The Galaxy. I assume (since Selvig mentions it) the group might be apart of The Dark World as S.H.I.E.L.D. which is obviously unable to handle aliens. Stellan Skarsgard role in the Thor sequel hasn’t been named but having him apart of S.W.O.R.D. is an easy leap to make. Guardians of The Galaxy is another strong candidate considering Peter Quill’s (Star Lord) origin very well could link him as a S.W.O.R.D. pilot. Abigail Brand could show up as well if the group does make it’s cinematic presence.

Exclusive: Jim Lee and Massimo Carnavale Cover Art for Comics Adaptation of Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained’

2012-10-10T05:15:00.001-07:00

Exclusive: Jim Lee and Massimo Carnavale Cover Art for Comics Adaptation of Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained’:

Quentin Tarantino‘s revenge “southern” Django Unchained hits theaters at Christmas, with Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz playing a pair of bounty hunters who track down a trio of slaver brothers, and eventually the wife taken from Django. But that screen telling won’t be the only version of the story.
At San Diego Comic Con this year Vertigo Comics announced that it would publish a five-issue comic book version of Django Unchained, based on Tarantino’s original screenplay for the film. R.M. Guéra (Scalped) is doing the interior art, and Jim Lee is doing the variant cover for the first issue.
We’ve got the first look at Lee’s art below, along with the debut of the cover for the third issue, by Massimo Carnavale.

Lee’s variant cover version of the first issue is on sale December 5, while the third issue hits stands on January 30.
For film fans who don’t do much comics reading, the hook here is that the series is based on a pre-shooting version of the screenplay. (Possibly the one that leaked last year; I haven’t been able to verify that, however.) Because of that, Vertigo is trumpeting the fact that this series might feature scenes and even characters that won’t make the final film. So if you never got to read the leaked screenplay, this might be the next best thing.

INDIANA JONES Animated Style Art

INDIANA JONES Animated Style Art:

Artist Patrick Schoenmaker created this awesome little series of cartoon style Indiana Jones art. It's fun to see these characters in this form. I'd love to see an animated series based on these characters, there's a lot of story to tell. I'd actually like to see a Jones and Short Round series that explores their relationship. What do you think of the art?

Detailed THANOS Concept Art from THE AVENGERS:

Here's some great concept art from The Avengers that gives us a much better look at the design of Thanos in the film. He was surrounded by a lot of darkness in the movie, but here we get to see what the Mad Titan looks like in the light with his helmet off and in full costume. I love how menacing he looks! I can't wait to see the larger role he ends up playing in the Marvel movie universe! What do you think of the concept art?

Mark Millar To Oversee 20th Century Fox’s Marvel Movies

2012-09-28T05:16:00.001-07:00

Mark Millar To Oversee 20th Century Fox’s Marvel Movies:

Once Marvel Studios started their ambitious Marvel Cinematic Universe, linking all their films in one world that culminated with The Avengers, executives and fans alike expressed disappointment so many major Marvel properties weren’t being treated with the same respect. 20th Century Fox has now taken a step to fix that mistake. Much as Joss Whedon is doing at Marvel, Fox has hired Mark Millar – the popular Marvel writer of stories like The Ultimates, Civil War, Old Man Logan and creator of Kick-Ass, Wanted and Nemesis – as the “creative consultant” on their upcoming films such as The Wolverine, X-Men: Days of Future Past and Fantastic Four. Read more after the jump.
Coming Soon posted the press release (read the full thing below) but here are some of the major bulletpoints.
It says the move marks “an expanded commitment to some of its most important franchises” and confirms that Nemesis is still in development at the studio. Millar hints that he’s only working on those three films at the moment, but with The Wolverine already well into production, I’m not sure how much input he’ll have on that. I think this is more of an X-Men and Fantastic Four decision (which still mentions Josh Trank as the director) for now.
Millar is well-known for being one of the busiest men in the comic book business but he’s also extremely fan friendly. In that aspect, I see this hiring as great news for movie fans (maybe not comic fans, though, who already wait months for new Millar issues). Millar is a huge fan with a big mouth and will be privy to, and have influence over, some very cool properties. I think it’s likely he’ll be dropping more news than the studio would like. Plus his ideas are always pretty outside of the box and exciting so I’d imagine he wouldn’t sign off on something like Fantastic Four unless it’s the Fantastic Four he’d like to see as a fan.
What are you thoughts on Millar’s hiring?
Here’s the full press release from 20th Century Fox and Coming SOon including Millar’s thoughts on his new gig:

Marking an expanded commitment to some of its most important franchises, Twentieth Century Fox has brought on comics superstar Mark Millar to serve as a creative consultant on the studio’s upcoming projects based on Marvel Comics properties.
Millar wrote several celebrated Marvel books such as The Ultimates, Civil War and Wolverine: Old Man Logan, before moving on to found Millarworld (millarworld.tv), where he continues to develop existing film franchise titles Wanted and Kick-Ass, as well as newer comic properties The Secret Service, Superior, and Nemesis — the latter also in development at Fox. Millar will work with Fox on developing new avenues for its “X-Men” and “Fantastic Four” tentpoles.
Commented TCF production president Emma Watts: “We are excited to be working with Mark. In addition to his groundbreaking Marvel work, he is simply one of the most original voices in comics today and will be an invaluable resource to us and to our filmmakers as we look for fresh opportunities to innovate within our shared Marvel universe.”
Upcoming for the studio is THE WOLVERINE, starring Hugh Jackman, directed by James Mangold; X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, helmed by Matthew Vaughn; and a reboot of “FANTASTIC FOUR, to be directed by Josh Trank (Chronicle).
“As someone who has spent his entire life obsessed with both comic-books and movies, this is essentially my dream gig as it’s a unique combination of both,” stated Millar. “I spent ten years working at Marvel and am really happy with the work I did on the comic side of things so the idea of working with these characters now in a brand new medium is enormously exciting for me. I really like the Fox team, love this bold new direction they have for their franchises and am proud to be working alongside some of modern cinema’s biggest talents. James Mangold is incredible, Matthew Vaughn’s one of my closest pals and Josh Trank gave us, in my opinion, one of the greatest superhero movies of the last decade with Chronicle. The invitation to join this crew was maybe the coolest phone-call I’ve ever had.

VOTD: Edgar Wright’s ‘Ant-Man’ Footage – Storyboarded By A Fan

2012-09-27T05:37:00.001-07:00

VOTD: Edgar Wright’s ‘Ant-Man’ Footage – Storyboarded By A Fan:

Were you jealous of everyone at Comic-Con that got to see Edgar Wright‘s surprise test footage from Ant-Man? We understand. Marvel does plan on releasing the finished footage online at some point but it hasn’t happened just yet. So if text-based descriptions of the footage haven’t done it justice, and slightly animated reenactments are also deficient, now a fan has done their best to recreate the awesomeness in storyboards.
While I can’t be sure that’s it’s a frame by frame reinactment, it looks pretty close, and is the best you’re going to get until Marvel releases Wright’s actual test footage. Check out the video below.
Thanks to Metacafe (via Comic Book Movie) for this video, which was done by Deviant Artist Samurai Jack. Well done, sir.

It doesn’t quite have the full effect without the music and visual effects, but you definitely get a good sense of the footage, Wright’s humorous use of the size and more. Here’s my original write up about it to help explain what you just saw.

The footage begins in a long, Matrix style hallway with two Matrix style agents. The camera moves down the hall, through a grate, and we see a tiny man standing behind the grate: Ant-Man. He jumps through and starts running at them. Of course, they don’t see him. He then pops up into real size, they start shooting, he gets small again, jumps, runs down the shaft of the gun, jumps up and punches the guy in the face, shaking the face in slow motion. With that guy done, Ant-Man gets big again, flips the other agent over….okay, honestly by this point I was kind of freaking out and it gets fuzzy. I do know that Ant-Man takes care of business, is about to jump through another grate when the elevator pings, and he gets on it.

The Amazing Spider-Man to end with issue 700

2012-09-20T09:14:00.001-07:00

The Amazing Spider-Man to end with issue 700:
in Marvel’s December Solicitations we see some bad news for Spidey fans…
The Amazing Spider-Man is calling it quits with issue 700 in December 2012. We will get the final book in the form of 104 pages written by Dan Slott, art by Humberto Ramos. We will also see 5 variant covers.
No official word from Marvel, however, it looks like Spidey is prime for a reboot in the Marvel NOW! initiative.

James Gunn Confirms He’s Writing/Directing ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’

James Gunn Confirms He’s Writing/Directing ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’:

This just in from Facebook (pay no attention to the time Joss Whedon already talked about Gunn like he was a done deal), James Gunn really is the writer and director of Guardians of the Galaxy!
Gunn, who flits in and out of my life with ‘Super,’ ‘Slither,’ ‘Lollilove,’ and PG Porno shorts is probably most derided for being a credited writer on ‘Scooby Doo,’ a movie with many uncredited writers. His film work has been very entertaining for the fanboy in me and this falls in line with Marvel’s previous plan of picking director’s with vision who can elevate the comic material.
And, just for the record, James Gunn is the only man whose anti-piracy arguments I’ll take seriously. Because when the MPAA is telling you downloading movies is illegal, they’re not legislating for the pornography industry, and that’s the pervasive theft Gunn takes into account.
Ok, that aside, here’s the update from Gunn’s Facebook Page:

For a month or so there’s been a lot of Internet speculation about my involvement with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Until now I haven’t said anything, because I’m trying to be less expulsive about this project than I am about the rest of my life. But last night I got the go-ahead from Kevin Feige to let you all know that, yes, indeed, I am rewriting and directing Guardians of the Galaxy. As a lifelong lover of Marvel comics, space epics, AND raccoons, this is the movie I’ve been waiting to make since I was nine years old. Kevin, Joss, and all the folks at Marvel have been amazing collaborators so far, and we’re committed to bringing you something majestic, beautiful, and unique. I am incredibly excited. I am also incredibly grateful to the fans and the press for all their words of encouragement and support regarding my involvement with this project since the news first leaked. Thanks – you have, honestly, touched and overwhelmed me. And that’s it for now. Other than the occasional photos of my dog and cat here on Facebook, I’ll talk to you again in August 2014 when Guardians is released!

Here we go!
There’s no where to go but up with these characters, I’ve re-read the 2008 series recently and – honestly – it’s screwy. Let’s make this a talking Raccoon movie that people will take seriously, now.

More Mother Russia Photos From ‘Kick-Ass 2′ Set

More Mother Russia Photos From ‘Kick-Ass 2′ Set:

It’s only been one week into principal photography for the highly-anticipated Kick-Ass 2, and we’re already getting some good glimpses at supporting characters.
Specifically the character of Mother Russia.
Director Jeff Wadlow tweeted this photo, intending to keep her full costume hidden:

Then someone on Reddit posted this photo, giving a full glimpse at MR:

If you’ve read Kick-Ass 2 the comic, then you know this scene comes from “the suburbs” sequence. And if the filmmakers stick to Mark Millar’s vision, then it should be one hell of a bloody, vicious action beat.

New Photo of James Franco in SPRING BREAKERS

New Photo of James Franco in SPRING BREAKERS:

Here's a picture of James Franco you don't want to miss! This latest image is going viral on the web as Spring Breakers looks to become the first movie that won't have you questioning why you're watching a bunch of Disney starlets in bikinis...wait what? I have to admit this movie hasn't been on my short list of films to watch but I feel the more I see about it, the more I want to check it out! It certainly helps that Franco is involved looking like a broke down, or better version of hip hopper Riff Raff (see below to compare). Think you will be checking out this film when it comes to your area? Check out all we've posted so far on the film and sound off.
