The Oscars were definitely a whirlwind day but all fell in order.   I began the day getting up at 5am to take my little pooch Panda to stay with her best doggie friend Hank. To me I barely stumbled to my friend's door but to Panda, it's as if she and Hank had all the energy in the world (even at that early hour)!   From there it was off to the races and a day full of celebrity hair and beauty only to begin with the fabulous Karen Hoyos, international motivational speaker.

Karen's focus on success comes from her sweet spirit and the passion to live and be of service to others.   More than 30,000 people have attended her seminars from around the world and I learned a lot by styling hair for this amazing woman. I had the opportunity to ask her:    "Karen, do you think success really comes from service?"

Dear Billy:    I am 47 years old and have never colored my hair.   Some people say I should just get highlights and others say I should get an all over color.    I have salt and pepper hair and don't know what to do.

Dear Betty:
Great question. If you've never had color, then maybe you do want to ease into color by adding a few highlights in the upper region.    The big question is this:

HOW MUCH GRAY ARE YOU COMFORTABLE LIVING WITH?

Highlights alone will only cover a portion of the gray whereas an all over color will give you 100% coverage from scalp to ends.   If you just want subtle blending away of the gray then sure, highlights alone are just fine and many people love this look.   However if you don't want to see any gray whatsoever, then by all means opt for an all over hair color, and possibly highlights throughout for a dimensional effect. Over processed color

So just how blonde is too blonde?

The truth is I see so much over-blonding and over processed hair that looks anything but beautiful. I can't believe what actually goes to print and what gets approved by art departments for the covers of magazines showing hot roots and bleeding color. The problem with high lift blondes is that the root area can get "hot" as we call it, leading to lines of demarcation at the scalp area, muddy looking color, and lines of demarcation at the previous color line if not blended correctly.

RARELY (if ever at all) do I use high lift colors for my base colors when blonding simply because the roots often look over processed and muddy. Many hair stylists use a high lift blonde and then highlight on top of that. In most of my blondes, I keep a darker to medium blonde tone at the base color and then highlight on top of that so that I'm not over processing the hair, and I'm keeping a more natural look and feel at the root area. The blending is a lot nicer, much more subtle, and you don't risk having hot (or over processed) roots that are often hard to control.

Here are my key tips for analyzing whether or not you are too blonde or over processed.

If your roots and eyes just don't seem to match, you know you're off.
If your roots have a spongy look and feel and hair looks really wirey at the root area, chances are you're way over processed
If your color looks one dimensional from scalp to ends you could probably use a little tone or dimension
If your base color has been lifted such that your scalp area looks bright golden, sometimes greenish, you're obviously lifted too much

For your base color, stay within 1-2 levels of your natural color and highlight all you want through that. Highlights are magical and can make even the darkest of hair colors look bright and beautiful while still giving lots of great dimension for your hair color.

Bold Brows are in for 2012

According to backstage artists at the Christopher Kane 2012 show, bold brows are in.

"The look is quite androgynous," said Lucia Pieroni for NARS Cosmetics at Christopher Kane. "The skin is really glowing and luminous with bold, defined brows and a touch of nude lipstick on the lips."

We'd like to hear what you think of this bold and framed look. We love the subtle eye and subtle lip combination but not quite sure about the bold brows.

I've heard so many people say "I'm having a bad hair day" and I watch how it affects their entire day and their interactions with others. Take a lesson and save yourself some time. Too many people spend way too much time trying to figure it out. Over and over they wind the brush, paint the lips, dust on the shadow hoping they'll someday get it right. What they don't realize is that sometimes it's the slightest little adjustment to what they're doing that puts them on the right track. I've always been a big fan of hair classes and makeup lessons because it's a great way to learn, polish up on your technique, learn a new trend, and so much more. If we don't know how to apply foundation to begin with, trying to teach yourself will only belabor the efforts and lead to more potential frustration.

I SAY - TAKE A CLASS. Hire a hair stylist or makeup artist to show you a few tricks and techniques to perfect the technique, save you a little time, AND, give you better results in the end. You'll also be a lot less frustrated and you'll feel much more comfortable with what you're doing.

Eyelash Extensions Los Angeles

They're still here, and they're just as hot as ever. Eyelash extensions in Los Angeles are still largely popular amongst party guests, makeover segments, and day-to-day beauty lovers. The ease of waking up to longer looking lashes is quite convenient (and very doable) thanks to the countless products and techniques on the market today. Here are a few options if you're not quite sure which way to go for those peepers.

Eyelash Extensions: Can be individually applied for a natural look. Semi-permanent, falls out when your natural lash falls out. Touch ups needed every 2-3 weeks to maintain the look.
Falsies/Temps: These can be glued on in strips or "tabs." To remove simply peel away the strip or the tab from the eye area (gently). Check with your beauty professional on the best way to remove as different techniques can be used to apply them.
Lash enhancement serums. In today's market there are countless serums to enhance the length of your lashes but these do require daily application to continue the look on an ongoing basis.
Glamour length mascara. The best tip I have is from one of my fabulous makeup artists Melissa McNamara. She says to apply a coat of mascara, dust on a little loose powder, then reapply mascara again. The powder and the mascara work together to create a thicker bed around the lashes for a thicker - fuller look.

We've seen the teasers, we've heard the word. Yes, Hollywood's Glam Diva herself will be CREATING the half-time show for Superbowl 2012.

How can you use a word like "doing" or "performing" when it comes to Madonna? We've loved the locks that we've seen thus far and the California waves are as timeless as ever. Combined with a classic 60's look, these careless tresses are easy to achieve with the perfect styling tools and textured hair (or "dirty" as it's been called) and we're showing you how.

Our prediction is sexy flowing tresses on Superbowl Sunday Halftime Show and rain or shine, we're sure these blonde locks will be flawless.

To get this great look, just follow these steps:

Apply a few mists of texture spray or sea-salt spray to dry hair
Blow-dry loosely using scrunching action
Use a 1 or 2 inch barrel curling iron and curl hair throughout being careful not to over-touch the curls when done
Allow hair to set or cool down for 5-10 minutes and shake loose with fingers
To give a little lift at the root area, hold head in upside down position and lightly tease under sections of hair near the crown area. Use light-hold spray while upside down and flip back up.

Hair Color Los Angeles Trends, Lighter Ends and Blonding

I must confess I wasn't a fan at first. All I could think of was "Oh my gosh, look at those roots." But before this technique was practiced, polished and perfected, it truly looked like overgrown color rather than something that had a more subtle effect and appearance. The idea is a beautiful sun kissed "natural wear" to color as if hair had lightened naturally over time on its own. The right stylist with a talented hand a color genius mind can help you achieve this result in no time. Balayage (painted on strokes) is a great method to achieve this look and minimizes processing time necessary as well.

Depending on the desired effect, lightener can be left on for as little as 3-5 minutes for a very subtle effect, or even longer depending on the desired lift. Consult with an expert colorist before just walking in and requesting this color service. Touch-up every 6-8 weeks to keep a consistent effect and to prevent over-fading or lightening.

Winter hair and skin

While much of the winter season is spent in down and Ugg Boots, beauty routines can take a back seat with all the effort it takes to bundle up and keep warm. But excessive weather and conditions can take a toll on hair and skin so it's best to be prepared.

Avoid excess treatments for hair & skin. If you are a routine facial or chemical treatment client for skin or hair, take it easy in winter months to keep hair and skin looking and feeling as comfortable as possible.
Avoid excess hairspray during winter months. With heat inside and weather conditions outside, hair can become dry and damaged. Use a shaping clay or styling cream to tame down or add structure to hair as needed rather than over spraying.
You may need to adjust hair or skincare cleansing systems to more gentle formulas during winter months.
Keep a hydrating mist with you for hair or skincare needs. Both can become very dehydrated in the winter months and moisture and hydration will keep both comfortable and healthy.
Trust your salon professional for products, tools or services during winter months.

Best Hair Color Tips - Billy Lowe Beverly Hills

Billy Lowe - Delicious color with subtle highlighting

In a word, I've corrected more "celebrity hair color" than you can imagine. I was listening to one of my colleagues say he completely burned off one of the Playboy Girls' hair when he left her under the dryer for too long. Sigh. When it comes to hair color, there's only one word I use when giving advice: RESEARCH.

Many people have never even had their hair professionally colored, and many others return time and time again to their colorists as loyal as people are to medical professionals. But color is something I take very seriously and with proper time and attention from both the professional and the client, results can be a sure win every time.

Here are some color DOs and DON'Ts.

Don't race your color appt. It takes 45 minutes for color to be applied and processed and even longer if you add highlights. This doesn't include highlighting time, shampooing or conditioning time, blow-out time, or checking in and out. Color is an investment of your time and finances.
Be realistic with your color. If you're a dark brown and you want to be "violet" blonde, good luck. First of all, I don't think it will look good, and the action at the roots can be very inconsistent if you're trying to lift too much. It's ALWAYS best to stay 1-2 levels lighter or darker than your own natural color and then add dimension with highlighting or low-lighting as you wish.
Avoid shampooing for 24-48 hours after color. Hair color needs time to settle and cuticle time to rebond to keep color lasting and looking its best.
Don't do it yourself. What a tragic mess this can be. Are you kidding me? Put that bottle down and spend $75 or $80 bucks and get to the salon and get it done the right way so you don't have to pay for a $400 color correction. This creates an annoying service for your stylist to have to think through, work through, and correct.
