The idea is a beautiful sun kissed "natural wear" to color as if hair had lightened naturally over time on its own. Balayage (painted on strokes) is a great method to achieve this look and minimizes processing time necessary as well.

Depending on the desired effect, lightener can be left on for as little as 3-5 minutes for a very subtle effect, or even longer depending on the desired lift. Consult with an expert colorist before just walking in and requesting this color service. Touch-up every 6-8 weeks to keep a consistent effect and to prevent over-fading or lightening.

Winter hair and skin

While much of the winter season is spent in down and Ugg Boots, beauty routines can take a back seat with all the effort it takes to bundle up and keep warm. But excessive weather and conditions can take a toll on hair and skin so it's best to be prepared.

Avoid excess treatments for hair & skin. If you are a routine facial or chemical treatment client for skin or hair, take it easy in winter months to keep hair and skin looking and feeling as comfortable as possible.
Avoid excess hairspray during winter months. With heat inside and weather conditions outside, hair can become dry and damaged. Use a shaping clay or styling cream to tame down or add structure to hair as needed rather than over spraying.
You may need to adjust hair or skincare cleansing systems to more gentle formulas during winter months.
Keep a hydrating mist with you for hair or skincare needs. Both can become very dehydrated in the winter months and moisture and hydration will keep both comfortable and healthy.
Trust your salon professional for products, tools or services during winter months.

In a word, I've corrected more "celebrity hair color" than you can imagine. I was listening to one of my colleagues say he completely burned off one of the Playboy Girls' hair when he left her under the dryer for too long. Sigh. When it comes to hair color, there's only one word I use when giving advice: RESEARCH.

Many people have never even had their hair professionally colored, and many others return time and time again to their colorists as loyal as people are to medical professionals. But color is something I take very seriously and with proper time and attention from both the professional and the client, results can be a sure win every time.

Here are some color DOs and DON'Ts.

Don't race your color appt. It takes 45 minutes for color to be applied and processed and even longer if you add highlights. This doesn't include highlighting time, shampooing or conditioning time, blow-out time, or checking in and out. Color is an investment of your time and finances.
Be realistic with your color. If you're a dark brown and you want to be "violet" blonde, good luck. First of all, I don't think it will look good, and the action at the roots can be very inconsistent if you're trying to lift too much. It's ALWAYS best to stay 1-2 levels lighter or darker than your own natural color and then add dimension with highlighting or low-lighting as you wish.
Avoid shampooing for 24-48 hours after color. Hair color needs time to settle and cuticle time to rebond to keep color lasting and looking its best.
Don't do it yourself. What a tragic mess this can be. Are you kidding me? Put that bottle down and spend $75 or $80 bucks and get to the salon and get it done the right way so you don't have to pay for a $400 color correction. This creates an annoying service for your stylist to have to think through, work through, and correct.

Stop twirling your hair!

Each and every day I see countless people out of nervous habit twirl their hair or pick at their ends. I can't tell you how many times I've been driving through Los Angeles in rush hour traffic and see the lady in front of me twirl twirl twirl as she chews her gum nervously at the light. I've spoken to countless groups and sitting right in front of me as I'm telling the crowd NOT to twirl your hair - is someone 4 feet away from me looking at her ends, or simply stroking her tresses as one arm is propped on the chair next to her. Readers, DO NOT TWIRL YOUR HAIR OR PICK AT IT. Here's why:

Over-touching your hair causes unnecessary stress on the hair
Twirling can cause breakage, fraying and other damage to the hair causing it to become weak and break
Twirling can lead to pulling. People often pull at a strand or two here and there and don't even realize they are doing it and before you know it, more is gone than they intended.
It can make you seem nervous or out of touch

All in all it's just not a healthy thing to do and the habit can cause you to seem uneasy. Relax. Take a knitting class, flip through the channels on the radio; anything but twirling your hair.

Frankly, I'd like to throw Khloe, Snooki and the Desperate Housewives of New Jersey under a bus.

Lighten up. You've got to know your content, and you have to be comfortable in your own shoes.
I remember my first reality auditions and I was like, "Ok, tell me about your hair." Today I look back at the innocence and sweetheart personality I had going into reality television, and while that works for some segments, reality loves drama. Nice may cut it for an ensemble cast, but if you want to carry your own segments, you have to be sharp, quick-witted, and have a sense of humor (even if it's making fun of yourself). People that are their true, authentic selves are truly the most beautiful. It shows in their confidence, the way they carry themselves, and their overall look.

Have your own identity. What sets you apart? Do you have a hairstyle that's your own? Do you accessorize a certain way that no one else does? No one can mistake the blonde ambition of Tabatha or the 6-foot-something RuPaul. These are identity pieces that set you apart from the crowd; a saying, a look, a color, a sense of self. Too many people believe casting directors know what they are looking for, when in fact most of them don't. It's what casting calls are all about. They'll know the role -- when they meet you. So be yourself, bring your identity, and look the role.

Get a good night's sleep. When you're tired, it shows. Skin is lifeless, discolored, and you're often running frantic, with no time or energy to perfect your hair or makeup. Furthermore, you'll get to the audition or meeting and feel tired or exhausted from not having had enough sleep and you simply won't be your best. Or if you've already booked the gig, there's nothing worse than getting on camera with dark circles or puffiness under the eyes, and all the Preparation H in the world won't shrink that swelling in time. If you've been in 9 to 5 wear all day long and you're eager for happy hour or the next after-work gathering, loosen up with just a few quick and easy tips. These quick and easy time savers will have you looking a little more casual, feeling a bit more comfortable, and save you a little more time rather than running home to change and then reconnecting.

Trade the jacket for a cardigan. Take a cardigan or light sweater with you for a night time change. This will give you a more relaxed and comfortable feel rather than staying in a suit/jacket look all evening. This even works for the guys.
Deepen the lips with a darker lip gloss and liner. This will give you a sultry evening look worthy of the night and whomever you may cross along the way.
Give eyes a deeper m ore dramatic look with a deeper eye shadow. Simply use a cotton ball to apply for a more smudged and smoky look.

When facebook becomes a drag

In today's ever fast-paced world, just how's a girl (or boy) to balance work, life, community involvement, church bulletins, texts, voice mails, emails AND facebook notifications from 100 or more "friends?" I was studying Dr Franklin Covey's 7 Habits recently and he had such an amazing way of putting it.

On a piece of paper, draw 4 quadrants.

1:   Important and Urgent (the annoying ringing of the phone)
2. Iimportant and NOT urgent
3. Not important but urgent
4. Not important and not urgent

All life's quality situations will (and should) land in quadrant 2.   Important, but not urgent. A friend of mine posted the birth of his babies on Facebook as the official announcement but became upset at me when I didn't see the notice. To me, Facebook is best for journaling, quick entries, or just making notes or sorting photos for myself. I use it as an online diary and certainly NOT to keep up with 900 people or more. To do so would be quadrant 3 - Not important, but urgent. This quadrant simply would not create a quality life for anyone.

So while this isn't a direct "beauty tip" for the day, it is to say that there are many more important ways to spend time, care for oneself, and make room for what really DOES matter - that perfect hairspray or lipstick shade.   All joking aside, the stress of keeping up with 900+ people on my Facebook as "friends" just isn't a scheduling priority for me. I take much greater pride in helping others look and feel their best, lending an ear to a client I'm with, or perhaps taking a friend out to dinner. These quality relationships are much more meaningful in the long run and to me help create a better balance throughout the day.

Today's beauty tip: Minimize computer and online time with situations that are in quadrant 1, 3 or 4 of Dr Covey's brilliant plan.   Enjoy the day.

The beauty of fitness

When it comes to fitness and wellness, there's no better place than the great outdoors. Or so says Jeff Archibald of BoldFitness.com. A Los Angeles based trainer, his passion for fitness and wellness ranges from bike tours, hiking events, skiing groups, and all things body. We spent a few minutes to ask Jeff what his top tiips for 2012 were for fitness and wellness and here's what he had to say:

1. Carbohydrates are not the enemy, inactivity is.
In regards to diet... the biggest exercise mistake I see all the time is carbohydrate restriction as it concerns exercise or any calorie burning activity. Inactive people will go from one extreme to another with carb intake and food in general: From not exercising and eating too much food (typically combined with excessive drinking), to exercising a lot while starting the super low carbohydrate diet fad. The body is not a car; it will not use stored fat the way a car uses stored gasoline. QUALITY carbohydrates, much like oxygen, need to be in ready supply before, during and after hard exercise. Always eat carbohydrates an hour before exercising. If an easy workout then there is no need to eat again right away. See the Harvard Nutrition website for accurate, non-profit information.

2. _______ is the best exercise! It is all I need (hint.... this is not true).

You can fill in this blank with yoga, Pilates, weight training, climbing, cycling, hiking, sprinting, etc. There is not one complete form of exercise. Like a balanced diet, you need to have staples like resistance training (weights not necessary but a great idea) combined with active range of motion, speed, agility and endurance training. But, not all at the same time. All professional athletes utilize periodization training. This means they will sacrifice one aspect of training for a short term in order to gain another. Everyone should have an aspect of this in his or her own year round training approach.

3. Treadmills are very BAD for you. Get outside; or, use a stationary bike and/or stair stepper.

Sorry to be the Grinch of fitness but if you are running on a treadmill you are not running. The action of a treadmill is basically a conveyor belt that 'pushes' your feet backwards forcing you to contract the dreaded hip flexors in order to 'shuffle' your feet forward as not to be thrown from the machine. If you really want to be healthy... get outside, get outside, get outside. If you can't, then the best indoor cardio is a stair stepper combined with a stationary bike.

A further explanation: A treadmill turns off the extension contractions of the gluteal muscle and deactivates the eccentric contraction of the hamstring in reverse biomechanical innervation pattern (think bad ergonomics). Hyperactivating the hip flexors (the psoas and the rectus femoris) and not the hip extensors (butt and hamstrings), will eventually destabilize the balance of the lumbar-sacral discs which leads to chronic lower back pain and potential serious injury.

Discovering the truth behind the client & salon professional's relationship.

Over time, clients develop a relationship with their salon and beauty professional that feels more like BFF's than a professional/client relationship. Underneath the cape, clients often tell their deepest darkest secrets, gossip heard around town, or simply what's going on in their worlds and they're excited to spill it in the salon for some reason. Believe me when I tell you I've heard the juciest of the juicy in the salon coming from some very incredible people. But just what is this magic chemistry between the client and the beauty professional? What is it that creates this bond of trust over time? What is it that causes such excitement when clients visit the hair salon?

For these answers, we turned to Los Angeles Psychotherapist Sheridan Kesselman. Here's what she had to say:

LL: Hi Sheridan. We're very excited to meet with you today as we dive deep into the relationship between salon professional and client. Our first question is helping us understand why clients get so excited to visit their salon or beauty professional?

SK: I think it's because they have a relationship of trust and a relationship of sharing that takes place when they're there. In addition, it's an environment where there's someone working with and for them to make them feel better about themselves.

LL: What about the bond that's build between a client and salon professional. Where does that come from or how is that developed?

SK: Part of how this bond develops is over a period of time. For people to experience a genuine sense of trust, they need to know that what they share remains confidential and that only happens when they continue to see one person for a substantial period of time and strengthen their bond together.

LL: Clients often spill the beans to their stylist from marriage and family issues to successes at work. Why does a client feel they can open up so freely to their salon professional when it's often difficult to say certain things to their best friends or even their spouses?

SK: I think one reason that happens is the intimacy of space. When a client visits her (or his) salon professional, she/he is in a small area even though walls may not exist. We all establish boundaries, and even when walls don't exist there are boundaries around that space where a salon professional is working. That space feels very intimate and allows clients to say thing they wouldn't say in larger spaces - even to people they know better. A lot of people may not even know their salon professional that well but still feel comfortable about sharing because of this idea about space.

LL: This is all very exciting and really gives us great insight into salon relationships. Now, you've worked in Los Angeles for a number of years as a therapist, but is there anything in particular you're working on right now that LoweLights.com readers need to know about?

SK: As a matter of fact, I'm very excited because I've recently completed my first fiction novel (romance novel) and it's due to be released in mid November. It's called SIZZLE. The story focuses on an older woman and her relationship with a much younger man. Woven into that are many issues that we all deal with every day regarding our sexuality, sensuality and our sense of self.

6 GREAT TIPS FOR CLIENT SAFETY

We all visit a salon or day spa. Many of us have visited the same one over and over for many years. We've occasionally seen the stylists' injuries including cutting themselves with scissors, burning their hands on curling irons, or perhaps getting color all over their clothes. But what about client safety factors? This is obviously an area that not many people are talking about and we thought we'd take a few minutes to raise awareness.

There are many things clients can do (and should be mindful of) for their own safety in the hair salon.

1. If you are having a facial or services around the face area, avoid wearing contact lenses during your salon visit. Your eyes are very delicate and often sensitive to fragrances, touch, and movement. Wear eyeglasses into the appointment and apply your contact lenses after your services have been performed.

2. Avoid wearing open toed shoes into a hair salon. If you've ever had a splinter, you know the pain and irritation they can cause.   Hair can break and splinter and get embedded into the skin just like that and be most uncomfortable. Without proper care the area can become infected, swollen, and feel very sensitive. In a hair salon, though the floors may look clean, tiny pieces of hair are still present and can get embedded into your feet from wearing open toed shoes.

3. When you are having hair services provided, remove piercings, necklaces, and accessories. Many people have multiple piercings in their ears and hair can become tangled and wrapped around the piercings.   It's very distracting to the stylist (and time consuming) to try to work around piercings and body wear so remove those items before you begin working with your stylist or beauty professional.

4. Avoid blaring your own music.   Many clients like listening to their own music in the salon but we recommend keeping music at a comfortable hearing level so you're also in tune with what's going on around you.

5. If salon gowns are offered - take one.    We always recommend a top change and putting on a salon gown if those are offered in your hair salon or day spa. This helps protect your clothing from chemical services, or accidental spills in the salon.

6. Keep your hands to yourself.   Clients are often impressed and wowed by stylists' tools and products but before touching anything, discuss that with your stylist.   Many clients have become injured from "putting their hands in the cooky jar" so to speak, and picking up a hot tool that they didn't realize was hot.

Most importantly - enjoy your salon visit.    Just be cautious when you go.

Blow dry your hair with ease!

The perfect blow-out is much easier to achieve than you might think. Many times it's not about perfecting the entire look. In fact, it can be quite challenging to blow-dry the back of your hair because of body mechanics and positioning. Ideally, a smooth and polished look in the front and perhaps time saving scrunching in the back creates a fabulous look that's the perfect combination of structure and "un-structure."

When we were in NYC at Gansevoort and our fabulous $10,000 makeover winner, here are the top tips I shared with press and media for a fabulous blow-out and smooth/polished look.

My biggest beauty tip to blow-drying your hair is to keep the brush moving. Too many people wrap their hair around the brush and then park the heat in that one spot to dry the hair. This puts too much stress on the hair in one spot and can cause breakage and damage. KEEP THE BRUSH MOVING and don't stop. It's perfectly find for the nozzle of the dryer to touch the hair and the brush while you're working, but always keep the brush moving.
