In the Victorian town of Torquay, there’s a few extra waves on the beach. Australian architect Tony Hobba has created a wave inspired structure out of recycled sheet metal and concrete that resembles an old, rusty surf shack. The Third Wave Kiosk, as it is formally known, is situated on top of a cliff and is fast becoming a big tourist attraction for the picturesque town. Who said building on a budget couldn’t be classy? [Follow me on Twitter @cormy96 and Instagram @cormy096]

This video by Dutch illustrator and animator Kristof Luyckx is so simple and effective that it’s pure genius. The animation is very well done (just look at the drummer smoothly banging away) and rendered in Luyckx’s trademark black and white style. What about Black Spires, though?

Never heard of them, but I must say I got positively struck by this song, even though I’m usually not a big fan of the screamo-noise flavour of music, and I went over to their bandcamp page to find practically nothing about them except for the fact that they come from Ghent, Belgium.

But what I did find was a handful of pretty good songs. A nice blend of noisy guitars, steady rhythms and eerie atmospheres with a marked – but absolutely not banal – hardcore and post-rock influence.

What Marco Mazzoni can do with coloured pencils on a moleskine sketchbook is pretty amazing. The Modenese artist has a taste for delicate, very detailed renders and intricate compositions of small animals and mystical women. In his women portrait series, he chooses not to paint the eyes, which he sees as a distraction, thus infusing an hypnotical and mysterious atmosphere to his work. Blending mystical Italian folklore, medicinal flora and symbolic fauna with delicate femininity, he creates ghostly characters and images that are full of hidden meaning.

Anyone who thinks they can simply lie down briefly on a public bench is already being sabotaged: the benches are deliberately too short for this, or the public benches are being interrupted by ‘comfortable’ armrests. Into our obsession with control and security and what that can ultimately derail comes Nadia Kaabi-Linke’s impressive artwork, Parkverbot (looted art). It captures our schizophrenic Western society in a nutshell, constantly talking about values such as freedom and peace but at the same time correcting the symbol of this – the Dove – by using the tools of an animal abuser.

His bestiarium makes me often think of John Bauer, but his style is quite unique in being deep and scary and simple and childish at the same time.

What would you do if you woke up and your whole bedroom has become an aquarium? And what would you think if, while you’re watching a movie with your partner, you suddenly found yourself surrounded by squirrels? Decades before Photoshop was available, American photographer and installation artist Sandy Skoglund started creating surreal images by building amazingly elaborate sets, a process which took months to complete. Her works are characterized by an incredible amount of objects settled against contrasting colours or on a monochromatic colour scheme.

But I never imagined we could also taste it. ‘Food Lovers’ is a project by Studio 23 in Rome. Starting with a simple recipe, the photographer, Daniela Di Rienzo, and the culinary artist, Mariagrazia Lonza, turn a culinary dish into a Japanese landscape, in an aquarium, or in an island in the middle of the sea.

These days, when the economical crisis is part of every headline and we struggle to think positively about our future, it’s a challenge to find a realistic pep talk. When I came across this TEDx talk by Federico Pistono, I was glad to know that there are many great young minds who research and share their visions and plans on building a better future. These are real plans that start from conversations and sharing ideas.

Bright and intense colours, originality, sensuality and innocence characterize the work of this young photographer. Liesje Reyskens is a graduate of the Media and Design Academy KHLIM in Genk, Belgium. A contemporary photographer with an international and modern style, she aims for a naive, fairy-tale look in her images and she often does the make-up and styling herself.

Her pictures are an eccentric mix of realism and fantasy. Reyskens usually works with quite inexperienced models whose expressions remind us of child-like innocence.

If you literally feel like widening your horizon, you should take a closer look at one particular suburb of Buenos Aires called San Isidro. It’s a beautiful, hip area where a lot of creative people and artists reside and work. For instance, Dreams Factory, a local company manufacturing sunglasses and graduated glasses. All hand made from the first step to the finished product, these mahogany wooden glasses are waterproof and very resistant. And since they are handmade, every pair is unique, just like the customers.

I don’t remember all that much about the Nietzsche that I’ve read.
I don’t remember all that much about the Nietzsche that I’ve read. I do, however, remember the essence of The Family Circus, and I find it more nihilistic than anything old Friedrich wrote. If you swap out the grody familial schlock and put in some random Nietzsche quotes, it improves the comic considerably. I almost feel a little bad for Nietzsche. No one wants to be associated with the Family Circus like this.

I discovered Claudia Rogge two years ago. She is a German artist and photographer whose bodies collection creates a wide range of artistic human patterns. One of her cycle of works is inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy and illustrates Hell, Purgatory and Paradise in her personal vision. These images remind me of the atmosphere of Baroque paintings but we can also note provocative and obsessive details hinting at sodomy and perversion. Good and evil are mixed and we walk with our eyes through the Dante’s Inferno.

Translocation, a book by multi-award winning photographer George Logan, is a collection of wonderful pictures. This work seems to have a funny appearance but the real meaning of this project is to let people know how important it is to eliminate suffering and preserve wildlife in its free and wild state. To complete Translocation, Logan had the opportunity to travel across the world – Botswana, Namibia, Tanzania, Kenya and South Africa – photographing wild animals in their natural habitats, discovering new places, and meeting amazing creatures. The Afro-Scottish photographer makes us reflect on the repercussions of human action on the natural environment and on the animal’s lives themselves.
