In honour of World Press Freedom Day, the non-governmental organisation Reporters sans frontièrs (Reporters Without Borders) and its agency BETC Paris rolled out an attention-grabbing print campaign in the Opéra Metro (subway) station in Paris to raise public awareness. The campaign depicts some well-known dictators such as Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un giving everyone the finger, or the international equivalent thereof. They are known for making a mockery of press freedom and their own people.

The goal is to remind people of how freedom of information is an essential for everyone to be able to exercise their role as a citizen.

Philosophy professor and author Simon Critchley recently held a suicide note writing workshop as part of a pop-up series dubbed the School of Death. ‘They are a last, desperate attempt at communication,” he said of suicide notes. “They are failed communication, in a sense’.

Class included a spritely discussion about suicide and included a hands-on bit where participants penned their own suicide notes in 15 minutes and shared these aloud with their peers. Hmm, does seems more life-affirming than the subject matter would suggest.

The black and white photography of Andre D. Wagner creates a bold statement while maintaining a simple image. Wagner uses everyday lives and routines to perfectly portray different aspects related to humanity. He uses the language of expression to directly relate to his audience. The power of suggestion is forceful in his work, alongside the beauty in individualism. Simple yet bold, Wagner manifests prints specific to the realities life beholds.

More than 100 of the world’s most exciting and influential artists, illustrators and designers including Oliver Hibert, Tatiana Arocha, Insa, Stanley Chow, Kai and Sunny and Pete Fowler have taken a paper dog and made it their own as part of the two-year Gerald Project. Culminating in an exhibition currently at New York Design Week, the collaborative sculpture exchange is one of the most ambitious in the history of art and design.

Stood on four legs with his nose proudly pointed to the air, Gerald really is a dog like no other. Designed by British design house, Lazerian, the free standing model of a Bracco Italiano breed of gun dog made entirely of paper uses up to 88 individual components for each large format dog. His construction is a prime example great design giving strength and grace to the most unlikely and underappreciated of materials. Joining Lazerian to celebrate the completion of the project is James Cropper, the 170 year old British paper mill who will use their publishing experience to create a high quality, limited edition, large format hardback book featuring all 120 of the paper dogs alongside artist reflections on what the project and Gerald means to them.

In this music video, the artist combined traditional watercolor techniques with digital effects. Every texture, illustration or letter was painted and scanned several times to achieve this beautiful effect. It took weeks to produce because of the high level of details and the painting effect the artist wanted to achieve. It’s a brilliant combination of traditional art and motion graphics. The artist is the same guy behind experimental music videos from Mos Def and Amon Tobin. This is the first project of Sublime Silence, a collaborative studio that specializes in fine art and experimental videos.

We’ve seen many types of maps, and most of them share one characteristic: they are minimalistic, topographic representations of a particular physical area. Now Sohei Nishino has gone ahead to blow our minds with his spin on maps of cities he has visited. Comprised of his stash of photographs, these recreate the city as one large collage, and are intended to function as a accurate-to-memory record rather than a accurate-to-scale map. He has crafted at least 14 of these over the last decade or so. These are plain fascinating.
