Safe-haven government bonds retreated as investors shifted funds into riskier assets, while gold steadied after having soared in the past few weeks on mounting fears about the financial health of countries trying to contain the crisis. Bernanke said the government did not have plans to nationalise major banks at this stage,…
Bernanke expressed faith that the banking system could be stabilized and that authorities were on the right path in taking time to fully diagnose the health of top U.S. banks. “If I thought the banks were irrevocably damaged, I would have a different view, but I do believe our major banks have significant franchise values,” Bernanke said in testimony before the Senate…
The bank has a significant exposure to the falling British property market. The regulator said…

Comments NEW YORK (Map, News) - Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke has reassured Wall Street by telling Congress the recession might end this year. In his semiannual report to the Senate Banking Committee, Bernanke predicted the economy is likely to keep contracting in the first six months of 2009. But he also said “there is a reasonable prospect” the recession will end this year. He warned that a recovery will require getting credit and financial markets to operate normally. While Bernanke’s assessment of the economy helped ease some pressure on the market, it also came after days of heavy selling that left the Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor’s 500 index near 12-year…
Fresh economic news out Tuesday likely will compound their gloom. Major retailers including Target Corp., Home Depot and Macy’s Inc. (M, News) reported depressed fourth-quarter results. Another widely watched index showed home prices tumbled by the sharpest annual rate on record and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said the economy is suffering through a “severe contraction” that’s likely to keep shrinking in the first half of this year.
