So, where have we been? Good question. Well, while the 6 amigo/amigas of THATH have been hard at work cloistered in the studio recording what is certainly going to be the best sophomore album ever, we’ve been cloistered away mentally preparing ourselves for its release. And for all of the press outings, relentless touring, and festivities that are sure to follow. (PS we’ve heard some of the new album demos, and it sounds DAMN GOOD!!). Stay tuned for much more information on the forthcoming record. In the meantime, we can expect a release date somewhere in the early fall, followed by a large US Fall/Winter tour.

As the band are preparing the album’s finishing touches, they’ve chosen to go light on touring this summer (I’d expect to see THATH at a bonkers amount of festivals in Summer 2014). They have, however, confirmed a number of diverse and awesome festival dates for this summer, which we recap for you here.

A week and a half ago I was blessed with the opportunity to see The Head and The Heart live at the ASCAP music cafe at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. I attended the show with two THATH noobs who were very excited for their first live experience. The cafe is small, and generally difficult to get in to without waiting in line for up to a few hours as there is limited space. After two relatively low energy acts the band took the stage for their half hour set at 3:20 pm and opened up with Down in the Valley. The song, a personal favorite is always great live, yet caught me off guard as I had never heard it open a show before. I was caught off guard yet again when the band decided to debut a brand new song for the eager Sundance crowd. (video below).

(First 1:40 of the video is a bit shaky until I convinced someone to let me set the camera down on a table in front of their cup of soda)

I thought the song was great as did the crowd, and was surprised by how tight it was even though it was their first time playing it live.
Lost in my Mind was next and brought those few in the crowd who remained in their seats to their feet. Then came the second debut of the day – The song was excellent, and just as tight as the first. I wish I had the video to prove it, but unfortunately it was knocked over by an elbow reaching for a beer. Hopefully it was a delicious thirst quenching quality beer.

With time for two more songs the band launched into a sweet Winter Song before closing out the set with a powerful Rivers and Roads. By the time the band finished everyone in the packed house (cafe?) was on their feet craving more, but unfortunately time was up. Needless to say the noobs were both blown away and said they could totally see themselves following this band around on tour. (Both over 30 with full time jobs -proving that even people over 30 can appreciate the music of The Head and The Heart)

Complete Setlist:
Down in the Valley
New Song
Lost in my Mind
New Song
Winter Song
Rivers and Roads

(The band debuted a song called Cruel in Ann Arbor Mich which = 3 new songs for those of you keeping track at home)

Teaser: for those looking for more of an inside scoop -
The band will be in the studio over the next couple of months working on new material, but plan to head out on a full blown tour again sometime this fall/winter to support of the new album. Also be sure to keep your eyes open for a few yet to be announced festival dates this summer.

It’s the beginning of August and another edition of the Newport Folk Festival is in the history books. Last year my daughter Kayla and I caught a remarkable set by The Head and The Heart at the Harbor Stage at NFF and since it’s been a year I feel a bit of reflection is due on this year that was.

The Head and the Heart was the buzz band last summer, an exuberantly raw and emotionally stark band collective that had exploded out of the Northwest on a mission of non-stop touring while straddling traditional roots rock with a savvy pop sensibility.

I was excited when I heard the band was on the NFF 2011 schedule and knowing they would probably be on one of the smaller stages, I was convinced that their set would be the one to catch. We spent the second afternoon of the festival at the Harbor Stage slowly moving up through the seats until we were in the 4th row just as THATH were ready to play the penultimate set of the stage that day. I was so pleased to see John Paul and Joy of Civil Wars on the side of the stage watching the beginning of their set.

The band opened with the ubiquitous “Cats & Dogs/Couer D’Alene”, and almost instantly hooked the capacity crowd; this was a set that was fueled by pure energy and emotion while the band poured so much out to the audience and ended up receiving so much more in return. The band flew through their self-titled album, throwing new songs ‘When I Fall Asleep”, “Seat Beside Me (Josh McBride)” and “Ever Since” into the hour long set. This was easily the set of the day, and the audience and the band were locked in the whole set. The impassioned vocals performance and spot on musician ship left the band and audiences totally drained and completely satisfied.

This time last year the band had a trajectory, they were burning a path through the strength of their live performances, and the success of their debut album. This summer a more controlled and more confidant band strode across the Main Stage at the Newport Folk Festival. The main stage area at Fort Adams holds 6,500+ so if this wasn’t the biggest crowd THATH played to this summer, then they were certainly one of the most passionate. The band again opened with “Cats & Dogs/Couer D’Alene”, but from the beginning, you could see and feel the change in the band. Earlier this year in March, Kayla and I caught the band playing at Portland Me.at the 1,600 capacity State Theatre. We were dead center on the rail and witnessed the genesis of this transformation.

Josiah, Russell and Charity are the vocal forces of nature of this band, but some added depth from Kenny’s keyboards, and a more determined pacing from the rhythm section have allowed for a more controlled yet just as affecting live show. Again the majority of the show was drawn from the first album, with live staple “Gone” and new song “Oh Virginia” dropped into the set. Charity had joined Sara Watkins earlier in the day during her performance in a duet, so it was fitting that THATH brought up Cellist Ben Solle to join the band on “Winter Song”. Sollee was the sit-in du-jour seeming to pop up every other set all weekend. To sum things up, this is a maturing and growing band, well aware of the tools they have at hand and the confidence and ability to use them. Backing up this swagger is a selflessness that each band member has which allows them to dominate or to demure as the music determines. The Head and The Heart are of the rare bands where the whole is much more than the sum of the parts. Looking back on the show all I can say is Lost in my mind indeed…

With the band currently working on some new songs, as well as getting ready to head back on the road next week we decided to take some time, and compile a list of the top 10 reasons to love The Head and The Heart.

Lostinmymind.com’s

10 reasons to love The Head and The Heart

10) The group formed in Seattle. Seattle has a history of churning out great music, and we are still not sure why.

9) Chris Zasche’s beard. While THATH’s bass stud was growing it out, ZZ Top was getting nervous and, we hear, started writing cease-and-desist letters.

8) They’re not afraid to try out new songs in a live setting. We, the fans, kinda feel like we get to be a part of the song-creation process. Takes courage on the band’s part. And we appreciate it.

7) Charity. She’s hot, has an awesome sense of style, and a badass voice.

6) They tour. A lot. Upside = you can see them perform live more than once a year. Downside = not a ton of time for them to work on new music.

5) The harmonies – simply gorgeous.

4) They worked their asses off to get to where they are today.

3) How the band was formed – It all came together in a meant-to-be kind of way that is somewhat freakishly awesome.

2) Not only do they make incredible music, but they happen to be great people as well.

And finally:

1) They make music that they give a shit about. They care about what they play. Sometimes you will see a live performance and know that the musicians are just going through the motions, but with
The Head and The Heart, it’s not that way at all. They get up there and, as a cohesive unit of musicians, give it all they’ve got, at every single show they play.

Additional news stuff:

The Band heads back on the road next week to play it’s two remaining opening gigs for the Dave Matthews Band. The first, on Wednesday June 27th in (lovely) Camden, New Jersey, and the second on Friday, June 29th in Hershey, Pennsylvania, after playing a sold out show Thursday night at the 9:30 club in Washington D.C..

It was also announced today that the band will be making their way back to Austin to play Fun Fun Fun Fest which takes place Nov. 2-4.

Lineup leak video is available HERE

On June 1-3, The Head and The Heart played three sold out shows at the legendary Fillmore in San Francisco. Having bought my ticket months ago for their June 9th show, it was hard to believe the day had finally arrived. This was my fourth time seeing them perform and even though I knew what to expect, I still found myself captivated throughout their set. Singing along to all of their songs, I realized that unlike my previous times of seeing them, for the majority of the set, I was singing along with the entire audience. Because all three nights sold out and tickets we’re hard to get, it was really fun to attend their show amongst other super-fans.

Even after seeing them perform twice this year, I am still looking forward to the next time I can see them live, and I am beyond excited for their new album to come out.

Until next time,

Interview: The Head and the Heart’s Tyler Williams on the band’s journey from open mics to three nights at The Fillmore – thebaybridged.com – Interview/ Feature

In a well written feature article/interview before the Fillmore shows Tyler reveals all, well maybe not all, but a lot. Here is a blip ““It’s not a healthy criticism circle up there. It bore down on Jon. It came out in one song … it’s pretty angsty,” he said. A second song, going with the working title of “Bird With Her Own Cage” will have a “hair” of electronica. “It’s about unrequited love, when you were young. And now you can actually have love, when you’re older. Does it mean the same as that unrequited love?”

Highly recommend checking out the full interview.

The Head & The Heart: Seattle Band Are “Liked,” A Lot – cityweekly.net – Feature/Interview -

A great article that was released before THATH’s Salt Lake City performance opening for The Shins:
“They had something like 1,700 fans, and we had something like 1,600,” says The Devil Whale bassist Jake Fish. “So, Charity bet [Jones] that they could have more fans at the end of a year or something, just kind of joking around.” As of press time, The Head & The Heart had nearly 100,000 fans; The Devil Whale had nearly 3,000.

“I think they won,” Fish says with a laugh.

The feature goes on to discuss the relationship between the two bands (The Head and The Heart and The Devil Whale), and then dives into the song writing process on the new album and creativity with some input from Tyler.

The Head and the Heart have come a long way since their first Sasquatch!, as demonstrated by the fact that this year the sextet played to the masses of mildly interested hill-perchers on the Gorge Amphitheatre stage Sunday afternoon. As locals (based in Seattle, a short three hours away), they were welcomed by screams as vocalist/violinist Charity Thielen thanked those “who have been with us from the beginning.”

On THATH’s performance at Sasquatch:
“The main stage was full of emotions on Sunday. Seattle band, The Head and the Heart played on the main stage in the afternoon. Their upbeat energy and beautiful harmonies struck a cord with the crowd. Female lioness, Charity Rose Thielen was adorable and said a tearful thank you to the audience.”

“The Head and the Heart continue to grow, and they’re taking a gaggle of fans along with them. The Gorge Amphitheater was full of people who were anxious to get their sing-on with the old songs, and pay close attention to the new.”

This full length review article (possibly the only solely dedicated to THATH) on The Head and The Heart’s performance at Sasquatch really gives a nice look at the set and the crowds reaction.

“This was my first time seeing The Head and the Heart. They definitely are a a group of talented people and I felt lucky that we were in there stomping grounds as they were sure to go the extra mile.”.

Sasquatch 2012: It’s All About The Ladies - blogs.theprovince.com – Feature? -

Interesting write up on the ladies of Sasquatch 2012. If you like women, or women in music, or musically gifted women, or women who played music and dominated the scene at Sasquatch this article is for you.

On Charity:

“Charity Rose Thielen: Seattle’s The Head & The Heart had one of the most receptive audiences at Sasquatch, and Charity Rose Thielen was truly grateful for that. She thanked them over and over. But the reason she’s on our list is her voice. The woman is a powerhouse! Besides being a masterful violin player, she also delivers her vocals with conviction and emotion. Apparently she shed a tear in her solo at the end of their set at Sasquatch and I’m sure she wasn’t the only one.”

Salt Lake City:

Concert Review: The Shins At Red Butte Garden – CityWeekly.Net – Show Review – “Saying The Head & The Heart’s (pictured below) folk-infused set was energetic wouldn’t be doing it justice. Every member of the band whaled on their respective instruments with their entire bodies, and such enthusiasm was an absolute joy to watch. With heart-tugging lyrics on songs like “Gone,” “Josh McBride” and “Down in the Valley,” The Head & The Heart were able to make a large venue like Red Butte Garden feel like a campfire singalong. Frontman Josiah Johnson and company showcased exuberant, powerful performances all around, and on “Rivers & Roads,” violinist Rose Thielen busted out some fantastic pipes in the chorus.”

“the head and the heart is a band that i had heard of but never really listened to until i saw that they would be playing with blind pilot and the shins in salt lake city. (which is exactly how i discovered blind pilot when i saw that they would be opening for the decemberists.) but as soon as i heard them, i knew that i would love them.”

Red Rocks:

The Shins at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, 5/29/12 (photos and review) – heyreverb.com – Show Review – Saved the worst review for last. This guy just didn’t get it, and that’s o.k. not everyone is going to be a fan.
“The Head and the Heart were particularly entralling for young folks in the audience. It was difficult, though, to hear through their ears. One girl just off the famous stairs was crying as she mouthed lyrics to a tune from the rootsy Seattle troupe. But, why? It all seemed desperate: lay-up shots of attempted catchiness circling around the rim before dropping to the floor. The band employs some amalgam of the smooth harmonies of Mumford & Sons with the contrived builds of Arcade Fire, but it all feels innocuous and unoriginal.”

The Devil Whale:

Just because we love The Devil Whale and in honor of being mentioned in the article above we decided to share this gem as well.
