Thank you so much for inviting me to your lovely blog, Louisa! My novel Beauty of the Beast is set in 1950, so here’s a little peek into the different world of our parents and grandparents.

The Wicked Fifties!

In 1950, the world was emerging from a long, hard war, World War II. After years of rationing, air raid drills, and widespread military service, the populace was ready to let loose and have fun! Many veterans, like my father, enrolled straight into college on the G.I. Bill. While money was tight, the mood was upbeat and optimistic.

The war effort had meant outside-of-the-home jobs for women in unprecedented numbers. While the men were off fighting, the women learned they could weld and drive buses and run factories. In Beauty of the Beast, Mary Jane is an ambitious young reporter, fighting for recognition in what was still a male dominated newsroom. Soldiers came home to a different world from the one they had left. The Master, the Beast, has returned from a German prisoner of war camp, embittered and bent on revenge.

Women feeling empowered + Men returning as conquering heroes with tormented souls = Instant sexual tension! You can see it in the advertisements of the day. I can’t include them here for copyright reasons, but you can see 23 sexy images I’ve collected on the Beauty of the Beast Pinterest board.

Then as now, sex sells, and the images were screaming hot and obvious in the 1950s! Spanking is a familiar theme, from college party photos to men punishing their wives for buying the wrong brand of coffee.

Overt SM became mainstream in the 1950s. Sexy pinup images for soldiers overseas came home with them. The hugely popular Bettie Page posed with whips and enacted spanking scenes for photographer Irving Klaw. Photographs of naked women in ads for products as diverse as stockings to car wax were “photoshopped” to appear to be sketches.

This is the world Mary Jane and the Master inhabit. This is the world where they meet, clash, and light sparks to bonfires of desire, a world where the fiery Mary Jane confronts the carnal darkness of the Beast. Can she unleash the gentle beauty trapped deep in his soul? Can he trigger the wild wanton beast beneath the prim business skirts? Will they find heartbreak or true love in the wicked 1950s?

When the rain got me, I was still running along an unfamiliar street that seemed endless on both directions. Within seconds, the drizzle became a cold downpour that soaked me to the bone, plastering the thin shirt and jeans onto my body. My hair was sticking on my face, pricking my eyes like dozens of needles, but I didn’t stop. Lost in a haze of despair, I could not comprehend the faint voice in my head that warned me to go back. I kept running away. Where I was heading, I could not tell anymore. Everything around me seemed strange and obscure; no houses, no shelter, only the perennial olive trees and the murky veil of rain. For the last two years in my life, every day, every minute, every second had been spinning around one single pivot; that rescue mission had been the only pivot of my new life. It had defined my actions, my thoughts, and my whole existence. I had gone a long way, overcoming any personal limit and fear, transcending time, only because I was fixed on a purpose. I had left my old life behind.

I had a life once.

1. What is it about Charleston that makes you love it so much?

I went to high school here and met my husband here, so it’s sort of got this amazing nostalgic feeling about it to me. My husband’s parents are here, too, so it feels like home. Not to mention, it’s got beaches! Who doesn’t love the beach? J

1a. Why would you call it one of the most romantic cities in the United States?

If you walk in downtown Charleston, it’s almost possible to forget that it’s the 21^st century. The lovely, sprawling Southern homes, the horse-drawn carriages, the ancient graveyards—everything is saturated with history. It’s the perfect city for falling in love.

2. What's the best part about writing sexy stories?

I love a good sexy story. I’m a huge fan of Selena Kitt, whose erotica is so much deeper than who’s banging whom. J I think sex is fun, but it can also be really thought-provoking. It has the potential to bring out the best or worst in people, and that’s an interesting thing to observe, both as a writer and a reader.

3. So, why set all these stories in college?

College is one of those pivotal times in most people’s lives, where you live with a bunch of other people who have common interests, and some very interesting people who you have nothing in common with, but have to be around anyway. It’s a learning experience in so many different ways, and it makes up a sort of bridge of neither teen nor adult for people that can be challenging, exciting, and mysterious all at once.

3a. Did you go to college?

I did indeed. I have a Bachelors of Science in Psychology. I only did one year as a resident student, though. The rest I did online, which I totally loved.

4. If you had to choose, which story in the collection would be your favourite?

Ooh, tough one! Probably Swimmer’s Seduction because it embodies exactly what I mean about college. You just never know. ;)

Favorite Gay Fiction by Viki Lyn

Louisa, thank you for letting me post on your blog today. For those readers that are not familiar with my work, I write male/male romance. I just had my 12th book published since writing m/m back in 2009. Before that I wrote historical romances but switched genres when I needed a fresh start.

Why male/male? Because it’s been one of my favorite genres to read.

There are all types of wonderful gay fiction from murder mysteries to westerns and everything in between. I have some favorites that are keepers. I read them when I want to be immersed in a story with characters I care about. Here’s a short list of very diverse books, including Japanese yaoi or Boy’s Love comics.

Snowball in Hell by Josh Lanyon. I love the 1940’s setting and the mystery set in Los Angeles. Also the troubled reporter fighting his demons and falling in love. I’m hoping for a sequel someday soon.

The Broken Road by Sean Michael. Best friends discover that sometimes there’s no place like home and in the arms of the person who knows and loves you best.

Wicked Gentleman by Ginn Hale. This is a wickedly wonderful gothic fairy tale and I’m jealous I didn’t write it!

Longhorns by Victor J. Banis. Old fashion western featuring a handsome young drifter that catches the eye of one tough cowboy.

The God Box by Alex Sanchez. Coming out story. The young man must come to terms with his sexual orientation, religion and his belief in God.

Yaoi:

Future Lovers by Saika Kunieda – Mismatched lovers in a hilarious but heartfelt romance.

Kizuna by Kazuma Kodaka. A classic yaoi of best friends in love.

Butterfly of a Distant Day by Tooko Miyagi. This is a tale of second chance at love.

Shout Out Loud by Satosumi Takaguchi. It’s about a father and son and a cast of voice actors, a five volume series that is entertaining up to the final page.

This is a partial list and it’s always evolving and changing. If you’ve never tried m/m before, take a chance on one of these great books!

Kris felt like a deer in headlights. Her body and soul screamed ‘YES’ but her mind knew better. “Thanks, but maybe some other time. I’m really beat tonight.” Two more steps, keep moving, she thought.

“Tomorrow night?” Nick was determined not to take no for an answer. “I’ll cook. Is seven okay? Pegasus is invited too.” Nick gave her one of his most charming smiles; at least he hoped it was charming.

Kris opened her mouth to say ‘No thanks’, but she heard the words “I’d love to” escape her traitorous lips. She had never been able to resist this man. Not from the first time she saw him walking out of the library at school. Tall with broad shoulders, he was one of the only men she had met who made her feel petite, which she definitely was not. His thick, wavy hair—so black it was almost blue—was a little longer than she remembered. It suited his high cheekbones and wide-set blue eyes.

Nick took note of her appraisal, his heart hammering against his ribs. Relief washed over him when she agreed to join him for dinner. Dazzling her with a smile, which she couldn’t help but return, he said softly, “Till tomorrow then.”

Marian Lanouette Talks Cremation in Burn in Hell

I’m thrilled to host Marian Lanouette one of my authors at Ravencraft’s Romance Realm, and she's talking a topic I don't think ever has been discussed here before!

Since publishing Burn in Hell, A Jake Carrington Mystery I've gotten a lot of questions about cremation. Readers are curious how much research was involved to get the details accurate.

I actually had hands on experience. Back in the eighties I worked for a cemetery/crematory for over ten years. I loved that job and the people I worked with each day. When I first started working for the cemetery there wasn't a crematory. The Superintendent Peter had the foresight to see we were running out of land and proposed the crematory. He did most of the research, but I also got involved. After a year and a half of town meetings, zoning changes and good old Yankee stubbornness he got the approval to move forward. A new building went up which incorporated our offices and the cremation chambers.

Once we had our CO (certificate of occupancy) it was back to business as usual. I'm not going to into how to cremate a person here. The process is detailed in Burn in Hell. I've been a writer most of my life so everyday situations all get my imagination going. My job as office manager of a cemetery/crematory was no different. For years I cultivated stories in my mind involving many different scenarios relating to cremation or burials. The 'what if' game is constantly playing out in my head. As I'm sure it is in any writer's mind.

I've always been told write what you know. In the case of Burn in Hell, I wrote what I knew. And I hope you all enjoy not only the mystery in the story but the romance and the backstory.

About Marian

One of ten children, Marian took to writing to explore new and adventurous places. While her friends

traveled on planes for vacation, Marian traveled in books. With an overactive imagination she started creating her own characters and stories. If I Fail, A Jake Carrington Mystery is the first book in the series. Her second book in the series, Burn in Hell is now available. This month she released a novella called As the World Ends.

An avid reader, she discovered mysteries by reading the Daily News as a youngster. Intrigued by the real life crimes, and how the police worked and eventually solved them, ignited her imagination beyond the ordinary.
