Call to Artists – Deadline May 30th – NOLA for Life Project

The Public Art Program of the Arts Council of New Orleans announces a Percent For Art Program direct purchase of existing artwork to support the Mayor’s NOLA for Life Campaign.

Supported through funds generated by 1% of City of New Orleans’ eligible municipal capital bonds, the Percent For Art Program has evolved over the past 25 years into one that includes commissioned work, acquisition of existing artwork, community outreach and education initiatives.

Eligibility: Must reside or have gallery representation in Orleans Parish

Budget: $15,000 total

Application Deadline: 5pm, May 30, 2013

BACKGROUND
NOLA for Life is focused on compelling life changing choices and actions that reduce violence amongst African American males in New Orleans between 14 and 24-years-old, especially in four local crime “hot spot” neighborhoods: 1) St. Roch/8th Ward, 2) Central City, 3) 7th Ward, and 4) Little Woods/New Orleans East. This core group commits 99% of violent crimes in Orleans Parish and at least 70% of these shooters and victims know each other.

The Mayor’s Office of Cultural Economy and artist Kenneth Scott established a graphic design format to integrate visual art into NOLA for Life’s initiatives. The NOLA for Life Public Art Project will use Kenneth Scott’s current design of “NOLA FOR LIFE” text with the large, bold letters of “NOLA” as a stencil. One of Scott’s original paintings is shown in the attached illustration as the visual art background image. A range of other artists’ fine artwork will be utilized in the same manner, creating collaborative variations of Scott’s original design for the NOLA for Life campaign. The renditions will be reproduced by NOLA for Life in various formats such as mural-scale signage, billboards, banners, posters and t-shirts for maximum exposure.

PROJECT OBJECTIVE
To purchase existing artwork that visually represents New Orleans and will be best suited for the NOLA for Life stencil. All art must be framed and ready to hang. A specially selected committee will choose two-dimensional artwork for acquisition in the NOLA for Life / Percent For Art Collection. Approximately twenty pieces will be selected based on the available budget. It is recommended that individual artwork sale prices should not exceed $2,000. Along with selling the original artwork, Artists must agree to license their image for non-profit and educational uses to the Arts Council of New Orleans and its assigns [NOLA for Life, City of New Orleans]. This includes permitting the image to be digitally manipulated as necessary to best fit the stencil design. Exact stencil design is subject to change to suit reproduction needs. The original artwork will be installed at City facilities and key community locations such as NORDC centers.

TO APPLY
At this time, the Call for Artists is a Request for Images only. You do not need to submit physical work at this time, but please be ready to deliver framed work if selected for review. All work must be original and hand-made; no giclees or digital prints. No unfinished work will be considered; all work must be framed and ready to hang. No more than two images per artist will be considered. Please submit the following:
a) Artists current contact information.
b) One – two images of artwork
c) Title, size, medium, sales price and date completed. No computer renderings or altered images should be submitted.
d) An artist statement, 300 words or less, about each piece submitted and its relevance to NOLA for Life.

SELECTION PROCESS
• The committee will electronically evaluate work submitted and may select up to forty [40] finalists for further consideration.
• Finalists will deliver actual artwork to 935 Gravier St., #850 for purchase consideration.
• The Jury will determine the project winner[s]. Please note that although you may submit two pieces for consideration, the Jury will not purchase multiple works from the same artists for the NOLA for Life / Percent For Art Collection. The decision of the Jury will be ratified by the Percent For Art Committee and presented to the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Economy for final acceptance.
• Following acceptance, Arts Council staff will coordinate a photo-shoot for the selected work to create uniformly high-quality digital images for the campaign and will manage the installation of work in City facilities.• Staff will contact artists with work not selected to pick-up their artwork from the Arts Council’s office.
• The Jury, the Percent for Art Committee, and/or Arts Council reserves the right to reject any or all applications that, by its judgment, do not meet project requirements and to revise the selection procedure accordingly.
• All artists who enter will be notified by email of the Jury’s decisions.

Call to Sign Artists: Krewe Lounge

Call to Artists: Krewe Lounge

This artist call is for the signage of the Krewe Lounge project located in the Saratoga Building at 212 Loyola Ave. Looking to have each letter of “Krewe” hung and illuminated in purple in each of the first five panes. For the sixth and final pane, the words “City Center Lounge” shown and also illuminated possibly green or gold. The letters themselves can be made out of metal, plastic, acrylic or whatever medium as long as it can be well lit by modern leds or some other type of light source that brings an ultra modern look. It is also important to note that these letters must be installed securely.

Budget is between $2500 and $2900 for full implementation and installation. Looking to have the work fully completed by the first week of August.

AOC Recruiting Young, Local Unsigned Bands, Musicians

AOC Community Media is now recruiting local, young unsigned bands to perform their original music live on its music program, Threshold.

Bands interested in being featured onto Threshold should upload a sample of their music to AOC Community Media’s Facebook page or email a sample to info@aocinc.org. Threshold will be held on an invitation-only basis. Bands are only allowed to play original music, and lyrics must not include expletives. Bands will get one to two 21-minute live sets to perform using their own instruments and equipment.

“Our goal is to provide a safe and creative venue for young artists to express themselves, show their talent and create buzz about their passion,” said Ed Bowie, AOC executive director. “A local band or musician looking to gain exposure cannot ask for a better place to do it than on live television.”

AOC held its first installment of Threshold on Friday, Feb. 24 and has featured six local musicians and bands since then.

‘Nique Gifts and Crafts is an up and coming gifts and crafts store in Kenner, on Williams Blvd. just off I-10. We are looking for unique handmade items from local artists, artisans, photographers and crafters who would like to sell their creations in our store on a consignment basis. We are looking to sell items priced below $100, including but not limited to crafts, hats and accessories, bridal and baby shower gifts, seasonal decorations and items, household decorations, themed items such as Saints, LSU, and general New Orleans themed items. We will do 50/50 consignment if we provide the display and setup, and 60/40 consignment if you provide your own. Call to Artists; Lake Charles City Hall and Cultural Center

Rolling Deadline

1911 Historic City Hall Arts & Cultural Center wants to provide exposure and a venue to exhibit art shows from artists throughout our community.

This will be an ongoing project with no deadline until further notice. Gallery space will be dedicated for local exhibitions. Each show will hang for a 6-8 week period. There is no fee to apply and gallery space is free. The City of Lake Charles will assess a 10% commission fee for all art sales during your exhibition. Accepting work from all mediums including (but no limited to): sculpture, photography, painting, drawing, printmaking, illustration, graphic design, and we encourage an interdisciplinary approach. Portfolios will be juried by a panel.
