Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation Accepting Applications for 2013-14 Observers Program

The Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation is accepting applications from emerging directors and choreographers for paid opportunities to observe the work of master directors and choreographers as they create productions on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and at leading regional theaters across the country.

Through its 2013-14 Observership Program, the foundation will award weekly stipends of $200 to twenty-five directors and choreographers at the beginning of their careers and provide access to the entire rehearsal process, from first rehearsal through previews to opening night. Observers are given the opportunity to see first-hand the techniques, disciplines, approaches, and insights of master artists as they create new productions and revive classics. In addition, any observer who is not already a member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society will receive a one-year SDC associate membership.

Anyone with serious interest in pursuing a career in directing and/or choreography may apply, and previous observers are eligible to reapply.

Applications must be received by June 1, 2013, to be considered for all opportunities. SDCF will accept applications until July 31, 2013, but those applying by the later date will not be eligible for summer Observership opportunities. Application to this year’s program is free to SDC members and associates. A $25 application fee is required from those unaffiliated with SDC.

See the Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation Web site for eligibility and application guidelines.

The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation is now accepting applications from underfunded music programs for in-kind donations of musical instruments.

Through its Keeping Music Alive program, the foundation will donate musical instruments to music programs that serve low-income communities and have little or no budget for musical instruments. Priority is given to programs serving the most students within a school population.

Public, private, and charter schools are invited to apply; however, schools must be eligible for funds under Title 1 and/or serve a population where at least 50 percent of the kids qualify for the National Lunch Program. Schools also must have an established instrumental music program (concert band, marching band, jazz band, and/or orchestra) that takes place during the regular school day and is at least three years old. Schools that offer Orff/classroom music only are not eligible to apply.

Pre-qualification forms must be received no later than August 1, 2013. Upon review, selected schools will be invited to submit full applications.

See the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation Web site for eligibility and application guidelines.

provides instruments and equipment for eligible nonprofit music instruction programs. Awarded items are lightly used, blemished, or otherwise imperfect and have been collected by the foundation from manufacturers and retailers.

The foundation is currently awarding acoustic guitars, electric guitars, acoustic-electric guitars, bass guitars, and the equipment necessary to play them. However, other traditional music instruments, including string, woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments, as well as keyboards, are sometimes available. DJ equipment and computers are not available through the program.

The foundation awards instruments only to music instruction programs offered by public schools or 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. To qualify as a music instruction program, participants must be learning how to make music. Music appreciation or entertainment programs do not qualify, and the participants may not be professional or career musicians.

Eligible programs must involve either in-school music classes in which students make music; afterschool music programs that are not run by the school; community music programs that offer music instruction to community members; or music therapy programs in which the participants actively make music.

Complete application and eligibility guidelines are available at the Fender Music Foundation Web site.
