I cannot believe this is coming from Republican lawmakers. Hell, I don't think any Dems are foolish enough to try something like this in the current economy. Do they not watch the news? Do they just assume no one is looking? We can't pay the State's bills now and you want to increase our future obligations?

Even with accumulation of unfunded pension liabilities – $30 billion worth – some state lawmakers have introduced legislation that would expand government employee benefits.

A little voice in the back of my mind was always hinting that something was wrong with the Democrats complaining about the budget cuts the Republican were proposing... The could have passed any budget they wanted to back in September when it was supposed to be passed. They were afraid of what would happen in the elections if they passed their budget.

Here's part of an excellent article from Common Sense:

While I am still gathering information it seems that Republicans (and, American Patriots) came away with 6 big wins:

1) DEFUND OBAMACARE
2) DEFUND PLANNED PARENTHOOD
3) DEFUND NPR
4) $32 BB in cuts (in theory, at least)
5) Public Congressional & Senate Votes on each Issue
6) Factually showing Democrats as unwilling to pursue responsible governance

Remember, Democrats, with their 2/3rds majority in both Houses had 18 months to pass a budget, and hadn’t and they clearly obstructed this effort with claims that the 0.86% [zero point eighty-six percent, that's less than one percent! - Jeff] in Budget Cuts are "draconian"!

This is a letter I sent to the American Press. It wasn't published, at least yet. Whatever your opinion is on this, I think it deserves discussion before it happens.

Alternate Route to Creative Casinos

Re: Elly B. letter ‘’Don’t fill in Prien Lake Bay’’

There is another possible project to fill in part of Prien Lake at Indian Bay. (This is the area at the eastern foot of the I-210 Bridge.) One of the leading (?) scenarios to provide an alternate route into the proposed New Casino is as follows:

Route the incoming traffic from the Cove road exit ramp (and from Prien Lake Road) westward along Kiwanis Road. The traffic would pass by the LaFleur Park Beach, continue west and then go under the bridge and turn eastward past the Prien Lake Boat Launch and parking area and then turn north onto casino Property past the last Boat Club building. Culverts would be placed in the Cline Canal for crossing it into the Casino. Traffic exiting the Casino would use the same path. I’m not sure what will happen when traffic gets back to Prien Lake Road.

This will require a heavy-duty two-way road. In order to get the required 16 ft. vertical clearance under the I-210 bridge, the road crossing under the I-210 bridge will have to be extended out into Indian Bay and will require fill dirt.

Some of the negatives of this scenario are:

1. Residents of this area will be severely impacted by such a road. Noise, large traffic volume, congestion, wrecks and danger will greatly increase.

2. The Beach at LaFleur Park will be closed.

3. The very heavily used boat launch and parking area may have to be shut down or reduced in scope.

4. I doubt that an abomination like this would meet Federal or State Interstate Highway requirements for exit and entrance ramps. Also, would the Corps of Engineers issue a permit for dredging and filling the Bay?

5. At least one boat club would be forced to abandon their property.

I understand that the reason this option is favored by the Highway Dept. and the Casino is that there is no public money to do it right. With as much money as the Casino will make, they should be required to pay the full cost for proper access roads elsewhere.

I see nothing positive for the tax paying citizens of the Lake Charles area with this proposed scenario. We will be giving up too much just for the benefit of gambling interests.

Surely there is some more positive way to handle this situation.
