Louisiana Stakeholders Forum on Offshore Aquaculture

In 2008, the Louisiana Legislature passed a concurrent resolution asking Congress to
oppose the authorization of offshore aquaculture in the Gulf of Mexico. Recognizing there are
potential positives and negatives to offshore aquaculture, Louisiana Sea Grant brought together
stakeholders on both sides of the issue – as well as several undecided players – in October 2008
to discuss the topic and see if it needs further examination. Representatives from the state’s
four traditional user groups (recreational fishermen, commercial fishermen, charter fishermen
and environmental advocates) came together in one room to voice concerns and hopes surrounding
mariculture and to determine if the issue should be left where it stands or if it needs to be
revisited.

Jefferson Parish Lakefront Restoration

Hurricane Katrina made landfall in late August 2005 followed four weeks later by Hurricane
Rita. Flood and wind damage occurred along much of the Gulf of Mexico coast, including southern Louisiana.
This report, developed by Louisiana State University senior landscape architecture students working with
the East Jefferson Parish Levee Board, contains proposals for providing storm protection along Lake
Pontchartrain by rebuilding wetlands and coastal marsh where both existed prior to urban development
in the Bucktown and surrounding neighborhoods.

stewardship in the state. Two men who guided Louisiana Sea Grant for nearly 40 years are Dr. Jack
Van Lopik, LSG’s first executive director who retired in 2005, and Ron Becker, associate
executive director who has been with the program since 1970. In the accompanying audio files,
they recall the founding of the program and its early years.
