Chilli has since claimed that the donations were not intentional, and she thought she was giving to other causes including fighting human trafficking. A few weeks prior, Chilli shared a meme accusing Michelle Obama of being transgender. 

Nick Cannon’s Wild and Republican

Then there’s Nick Cannon, whose MAGA moment is much easier to translate. In a recent episode of his show, “Nick Cannon’s Big Drive,” Cannon didn’t just flirt with conservative politics, he openly expressed support for Trump, stating, “I f*** with Trump.” He agreed with claims that Democrats have historically harmed Black Americans. He framed himself as politically independent, while he praised Trump’s leadership and trashed Democrats. The episode featured infamously conservative Amber Rose, who spoke at the 2024 Republican National Convention.

In sharing these opinions, Cannon is actively participating in a narrative that reframes Trump-era politics as beneficial to Black communities. That messaging carries real consequences. The reality is that under Trump’s leadership more Black Americans are unemployed, more Black Americans face adverse health outcomes, and the racial wealth gap continues to widen.

Tristan Thompson Defends Trump’s Immigration Platform

Meanwhile, Tristan Thompson has moved from speculation into direct political commentary with remarks that are now circulating widely. In a recent interview, Thompson expressed support for Donald Trump, stating, “I love what he’s done so far for our country,” while also backing the idea that immigration should be handled “the right way.” 

Thompson, who became a U.S. citizen in 2020 after immigrating from Canada, framed his position as “nuanced,” emphasizing that legal immigrants should be prioritized while also acknowledging that some cases deserve individual consideration. Our current reality is not “nuanced.” ICE is tearing apart families, throwing immigrants and US citizens in detention centers with dangerous conditions, and watching people die every day.

Minaj’s MAGA Company

The most clearly documented MAGA tailspin comes from Nicki Minaj, whose recent actions go beyond isolated moments. Minaj continues to be a front-facing Trump ally, speaking at events, praising the President’s policies, and defending the White House’s continued abuse of power.   

What ties all of these moments together is influence. Celebrities carry immense amounts of influence. Chilli, Cannon, Thompson, and Minaj have decided to use that influence to platform Trump’s unpopular policies in ways that should be taken into consideration when audiences consume their records, shows, and content.

Today, Glisten (formerly GLSEN) has released its 13th National School Climate Survey, offering a detailed look at the experiences of LGBTQ+ students across U.S. K–12 schools. Based on responses from 2,800 students collected between April and October 2024, the report highlights a persistent pattern: school environments remain challenging for many LGBTQ+ youth, yet supportive measures can significantly improve both well-being and academic outcomes.

Queer Students Feel Unsafe at School

The survey results send a concerning message about student safety. Two-thirds of respondents reported feeling unsafe at school due to their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. For transgender students in particular, the challenges were acute. 86% said they avoided certain areas of their schools out of fear or discomfort. Meanwhile, nearly half of BIPOC LGBTQ+ students reported experiencing harassment tied to their race or ethnicity, underscoring the intersectional nature of discrimination.

Violence and harassment were recorded as typical experiences for LGBTQ+ students. According to the survey, 62% of students experienced verbal, physical, or online harassment because of their sexual orientation, while 68% reported similar treatment related to their gender identity or expression. More than half of respondents also encountered discriminatory practices, such as being barred from using facilities aligned with their gender identity. These findings suggest that despite growing awareness, many schools have yet to create consistently safe and inclusive environments.

Where Progress is Possible

At the same time, the report emphasizes that positive change is both possible and measurable. Students who reported having supportive educators, inclusive curricula, and access to Gender and Sexuality Alliances (GSAs) also reported stronger feelings of belonging and higher grade point averages. Anti-bullying policies that explicitly include protections for sexual orientation and gender identity were also linked to improved student outcomes. These findings reinforce the idea that institutional support plays a critical role not only in student safety but also in academic success.

Glisten CEO Melanie Willingham-Jaggers emphasized that safety in schools must go beyond simply preventing harm. 

“Safety is not just the absence of harm; it is active affirmation. At a moment when young people’s identities are being debated and restricted, this study speaks truth to a menacing power. To educators, families, and policymakers: LGBTQ+ students are telling us what they need. The question is whether we are willing to listen and to build schools that don’t just tolerate them but actively affirm and protect their right to learn and belong,” said Willingham-Jaggers. 

Ultimately, the 2025 National School Climate Survey serves as both a warning and a roadmap. It underscores the urgent need for safer, more inclusive schools while demonstrating that progress is achievable when institutions commit to meaningful support for LGBTQ+ students.

While major cities tend to have robust sexual health services, including widespread testing sites and access to preventive medications like PrEP, rural areas frequently lack these essential resources. The result is a disparity in prevention efforts that leaves many individuals at higher risk despite lower population density.

One of the most significant barriers in rural HIV prevention is physical access to care. Clinics and testing centers may be few and far between, requiring individuals to travel long distances, even hours, to receive services. For those without reliable transportation or flexible work schedules, this barrier alone can deter routine testing or follow-up care. Additionally, rural healthcare facilities may not always have providers trained in HIV prevention or comfortable prescribing PrEP, further limiting access.

Beyond geography, stigma plays a powerful role. In smaller communities where anonymity is harder to maintain, individuals may fear being recognized when seeking HIV-related services. On March 13, Shyyell Diamond Sanchez-McCray, a Black transgender activist and drag performer, was shot and killed in Petersburg, Virginia. This incident is part of a persistent pattern of violence targeting transgender people in the United States. Her death is the first known killing of a transgender person reported this year, highlighting the consistently brutal conditions for Black trans people in America.

Sanchez-McCray was a performer, a competitor, and a visible pillar of her community. Through her work in drag pageants and local organizing, she built a platform that celebrated identity while also confronting injustice. Her life embodied both creativity and resistance, qualities that are too often overlooked when transgender victims are reduced to statistics.

A Reduction of Legacy

That reduction is part of the problem. In the immediate aftermath of her death, Sanchez-McCray was misgendered in early reports, a common and harmful pattern in coverage of transgender victims. Misgendering does more than disrespect an individual; it distorts public understanding and contributes to the systemic erasure of transgender lives. When victims are not even accurately identified, it becomes easier for society to ignore the scale and severity of the violence they face.

The broader context is impossible to ignore. Year after year, Black transgender women experience disproportionately high rates of violence. These deaths are not random. They exist at the intersection of racism, transphobia, and economic marginalization, forces that combine to create conditions where Black trans women are placed at heightened risk and then denied justice when harm occurs. 

A Career of Community Change

Sanchez-McCray was just 42 years young. At the beginning of her career. Her deep roots in drag communities across Virginia and North Carolina will surely be missed by all of the queer folks who were able to work alongside her, attend one of her shows, or just share space with the performer.  And she cared about the community she represented, so much so that she took action to correct it. In 2023, Sanchez-McCray led boycotts at Bar at 316, a LGBTQIA+ sports bar in Charlotte. The bar has a reputation for treating Black patrons with racist microaggressions. The bar closed its doors in 2024, as a direct result of the organizing. 

What We Continue to Lose

What makes Sanchez-McCray’s death especially painful is how familiar it feels. Our community has been forced into a cycle of mourning, awareness, and inaction. Each new case of violence brings renewed attention, yet systemic failures persist. We have to protect trans people, keep them close, and be hyperaware of the dangers they face. 

Sanchez-McCray’s life should be remembered not only for how it ended, but for what it represented: resilience, talent, and a refusal to be invisible. Honoring her legacy requires action. Until that action is taken seriously, stories like hers will continue to be told, and the cycle of loss will remain unbroken.
