Hello everyone at Love Bytes,

I have an update for you guys, but before I can continue with it I would like to say congratulations Michael and Sarah. I hope you guys are now enjoying the married life! You seem like an awesome couple! Keep it up!

So, back to the update. The weeks after we [Michael and I] had exchanged emails, I actually had been seeing her around the nursing home. Every time, I would tell myself to go up and have the courage to talk to her. Of course I would chicken out, and all my coworkers would tease me.

You mentioned on the episode that it would be funny if some of the old patients at the nursing home were involved, watching as I tried and tried. Well funny thing is three patients there knew I liked her, and one of the patients actually told her that I wanted to meet her. One day, I passed by that patient and she introduces me to the friend of the girl I like (Ashley), named Rachel. There was also another patient, John, who caught me turn completely red as “Ashley” walked by. After that, John started to make fun of me. He called me chicken every time I came in and out of  that nursing home.

Today, I was at work. We were busy all day, and I asked my dispatcher if I could get a call from “that” nursing home. Dispatch says sure, but they don’t give me a call from there. My partner and I finally get a break, and decide to go to the nursing home. I was on a mission. It was today or never. We get to the nursing home, and as I head inside, John is there to greet me. All he says is “She’s that way,” pointing to the therapy room. I tell him “Yeah, that’s why I’m here today” . He replies with “Chicken.” I wait there for at least 30 minutes for the perfect opportunity. As I waited,  I mingled with patients (not stalker status). Finally she comes out, walks by, and I couldn’t do it. So, I sat next to John and I told him that I couldn’t. And, what made it worse was she looked gorgeous! As I’m talking to John, I see her straight across the hall, carrying some folders and reading while walking. I stood up and start walking, determined to talk to her. As we got closer, a man in a wheel chair blocks off traffic in the already narrow hall. She stops. I stop. I look at her smile and say hi, she smiled as well and softly said hi. Then I continued walking. She walks back to the therapy room, and I start walking back down the hall towards the exit, where John is hanging out. As I open the door, I say to him, “John, I’m a chicken. I can’t do it and I don’t think I will.” I walk outside and start heading towards the Ambulance. As I’m outside, I put on my sunglasses (Rayban aviators- totally not dorky), and my partner steps out of the ambulance telling me he needs to go to the bathroom. So as I wait, I sit in the ambulance and think about how much of a coward I am. I happen to look at the passenger mirror to see who is walking up the sidewalk. I thought, if she comes out, I will go out and talk to her. But only pedestrians are walking by, enjoying the beach air. I look out at the passenger window again, and what do you know? It’s Ashley, walking in the direction of my ambulance.

I tell myself that this time, I can’t mess up. I open the door, not knowing what I’m going to do. She passes my ambulance, and  I walk towards her. I said “Excuse me,” because she was looking at her phone. She suddenly stopped, then thinking it was not to her, continued walking. I repeated “Excuse me,” in a louder tone. This time she stops, looks at me, and smiles. “Are you busy?” I ask. “Uhm, no.” She replies, still smiling.  ”I’m just heading to the other facility.”  I say, “Oh, alright, I just wanted to introduce myself. Hi, I’m Ruben.” I extended my hand and she replied, “I’m Ashley, it’s nice to meet you.” We both smile, and, I can feel myself turn red. “I also wanted to tell you that I think you are really pretty.” (As I still hold her hand) She smiles, and as she looks at me, I realize that I’m still wearing my sunglasses. Dummy! I proceed with, “And I was wondering if I can maybe get your phone number and give you a call sometime.” (I let go of her hand halfway through the sentence.) She looks at her phone, then looks at me. Still smiling, and says, “How about we talk about it later, yeah?” or, “How about we talk later, yeah?” ( I don’t exactly remember). “Sure, no problem.” I reply. She then turns, and before she completely turns around, she says, “It was nice meeting you.” I reply with the same. Then,  I  get in the ambulance and see her drive away.

Anyway, I have no idea how to interpret the “How about we talk about it later, yeah?” or the other one, “How about we talk later, yeah?” My partner working with me came  back after, I told him what happened, he said that I may still have a chance. Honestly, what I think is that I don’t have a chance, that was her polite way of rejecting me. But, a more polite rejection would have been, “Sorry I have a boyfriend, but I’m flattered” or something along those lines. But, she went with something else. Even though I feel defeated, I am happy. I built up the courage to go and talk to her, and I felt great after. I’m still going to try, though. If she meant something from what she said, I’m going to pursue her. It’s encouraging that she knows my name, and I know hers.
