Recently, I have been spending a lot of time thinking about writing a post regarding Father’s Day. I usually post something regarding most holidays; however, this holiday, I have avoided like the plague. In the past, I have had lots to say about many holidays, such as New Years, Christmas, 4th of July, Thanksgiving; there was always something spiritual to say regarding them. Mother’s Day was no different; because of the relationship that I had with my mother, there was so much that I could say in honor of my mother, and all mothers. Father’s Day was different for me! For years, I respected the old adage of, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all,” so I avoided it! I did not think that I could say anything very enlightening or spiritual regarding this holiday. Well, I am different now; time has marched on; I have evolved, and now, it is time to say something regarding Father’s Day. I have come to realize that I do have a message; it may not be the typical Father’s Day message; however, it is a message for those like me that did not have a father that you looked up to or admired. It is a message of transcendence, polarity, acceptance, and forgiveness; basically, a message of moving beyond loathing to gratitude.

My father was not my friend, he was not someone that I could trust, or go to with any of my problems. He was scary, controlling, and judgmental. For years, the only thing that he modeled for me was what not to be. He was abusive, mean, manipulative, and he loved to play the power and control game. I never thought of him as being kind, empathetic, or loving until my mother was dying from cancer, then I saw a different side of him that I had never seen prior to her illness. Sadly, that side did not last long. Shortly after she died, he reverted to the same old, same old, but it was now seasoned with even more bitterness, anger, and fear.

I always hated picking out Father’s Day cards with messages to those fathers that were trusted, loved, and admired, for I had none of those things. My father, his actions, the abuse he delivered with his own hands, and our relationship, was the source of many hours of therapy.

Therapy was the beginning of the change for me, the changing of the dynamics between my father and me. Notice I do not say “relationship” because we hardly ever had any kind of relationship other than detest for each other. Yes, therapy was the beginning of the change. Thank God, therapy and therapists also evolved. At first, therapy was like digging through the trash can. We dredged up the past, placed blame on why I was the way that I was, etc. Blessedly, as the therapists changed, the type of therapy also changed; the blame changed to acceptance, and understanding. This new therapist was the first person to introduce me to the idea of conditionings, and how those conditionings shape how you view life, and react to life. She was also the first person to not only help me see that I was a product of my conditionings, but my father was also a product of his conditionings. This began to be an eye opener for me.

There were a few other things that she introduced me to as well. These ideas opened my eyes wider to different perspectives, new ideas, new outlooks. She did not try to persuade me to think a certain way, she just asked me to think about them, ponder them, or just be with them. One day she asked me, “Did you know that some spiritual practices believe that the child picks its parents?” That idea threw me for a loop, for why in hell would I ever pick this man to be my father? She told me that in those spiritual practices, an unborn soul picks its parents to shape it, mold it, teach it how, and support it to be what it is being born to do and be. She said that sometimes that happens in the obvious ways, and other times it happens in a more obscure way.

She also reminded me that I could never change the past. She also told me that holding onto resentment for something that I could not change was only going to poison me in the long run. She said that if I truly wanted to have this relationship change between me and my father, I was going to have to be the one that changed. That immediately took all responsibility off of my father and put it onto me! Yes, it was up to me!

She was also an active meditator, and she began to reinforce the positives that I already knew about meditation. This led me to a new dance, a new way of relating to myself, my father, and our relating in general. This new dance was a dance with Awareness. It was a new way of being. This new way of being began with truly allowing the past to be in the past, and I began to create the life that I wished to live; a life without bitterness, resentment, blame, and old sad stories. Yes, my past still had stories, but I began to tell them differently. I dropped the story of martyr, and I began to tell the story of victory and success. The players were all the same players as before, but now, they had a new purpose, a new role to play! This began to change everything in my life, including the dance between my father and me. Acceptance went to a whole new level; honestly, I can now say that acceptance actually turned into thanksgiving. Yes, I was thankful for my father for the first time in my life!

Sure, sometimes the mind (“I”) wishes it (“I”) would have had a father that was supportive, one who believed in “me,” thought that “I” was smart, and loved “me” unconditionally, but those were not the cards that I was dealt. I could sit around and talk about those cards, or I could play the cards that were in my hand right now! I began to choose to play the cards that were in my hands! It wasn’t long before life began to be quite delicious, and actually quite fun! Yes, I love my life today. I have realized that today would not be what it is without yesterday being what it was, and my today is building my tomorrows. I realized that this is the only moment that counts, and in this moment, and the moments that follow known as Father’s Day, I can say, “Happy Father’s Day,” and mean it!

So, if you are one of those that have been like me; one of those that considered Father’s Day just a day that the rest of the world had something they could rub in your face because they had something you didn’t, please don’t hold onto that. It does not serve you in any way, mentally, emotionally, or physically. Today is the day that you can begin to live in acceptance, thanksgiving, and love for yourself, and your father.

Many years ago, I became very interested in the ‘Universal purpose’ of being gay. I spent months upon months searching for anything that would give me some insights regarding this idea. Unfortunately, I had no luck finding anything, so I began to search in another form; meditation. I asked the Universe to enlighten me, so I begin to sit down and meditate on this subject. Weeks went by, and the meditations were peaceful, and enjoyable, but still no insights. Finally, I gave up. A few weeks later, I was on the massage table, receiving body work, and all of a sudden, I began to see a vision in my mind’s eye. I call it a vision, but it was more like a movie; a movie that began in one period, and moved very quickly through to another. Each scene gave me just enough information to understand it, and then it moved to the next time or scenario. Needless to say, I got off of the massage table crying, humbled, and honored; I got up and wrote down the vision immediately. Here is what I saw…

4-20-1998

The world was in perfect order, and perfect harmony. It flowed consciously and clearly. Since there were no clocks, no alphabet and complete openness, the people roamed the Earth. They listened to the Earth, and they felt the vibrations from the Earth. They talked clearly and understood what the Heavens and the Earth was saying to them. They understood power, energy, and electricity, even without science. They shared the Earth, the Air, the Seas, and the Heavens. They knew whatever they did, there was an effect, and they lived in this purity. Then one day, the ice began to melt and the seas separated the land. People became more stable, more locked into their lands. There was land that could be claimed and worked. They began to settle. They still lived in the harmony of the vibrations, but now they became ‘task-makers’. There were the crop-makers, there were the herd-keepers, there were the weavers, and there were the fisher-people. There was a place for everyone; even the gay people, the people that vibrated differently. Everyone knew they were vibrating differently because everyone sensed each other’s vibration. It was pure and beautiful. The gay people were the ‘Keepers of the Beauty.’ Because they vibrated differently, they were the Artists, Poets, Healers, Mediators, Teachers, and Guides. The other people felt they were closer to God because of the unity of ‘two within one.’ They revered these people.

Mothers upon conception sensed the vibration of their yet unborn children, and feeling the vibration was different their own, they gave thanks. The Gods had blessed them with a ‘Keeper of the Beauty.’ The leaders of the tribe prepared for the incarnate soul of the Gods. The ‘Keepers of the Beauty’ danced and celebrated the coming of another. It was a gift; a gift they could not give to themselves, as their vibrations couldn’t allow birth. Their vibrations were about re-birth. A child was coming, a ‘Keeper of the Beauty.’ The infant was given to the tribe when the Earth told them the child was ready to leave its parents and go to its teachers. The child had been birthed, now it was time to be re-birthed.

Many years later, as people became more locked to their land, this in turn changed the energy of the Earth, and this led to fear. People began to hear with their heads and not their hearts. They began to fear God. They also began to fear each other’s power. The ‘Keepers of the Beauty’ saw this change, they sensed this change, and they spoke of this change. They began to remind people of their oneness with God. They spoke of the union of all with all, and people became more afraid. They thought the Gods were playing a trick on them. They no longer felt the union. They hadn’t for so long, they even forgot that they ever had. How could these people, the ‘Keepers of the Beauty’ feel God? How could they walk the Earth and walk in the Heavens at the same time? They had to stop their walks; they just had to! Out of fear and desperation, they chopped their legs off at their hips. If they could stop their earthly walks, they could stop their celestial walks. They just had to!

This didn’t stop the ‘Keepers of the Beauty.’ They didn’t need legs to migrate and share what they knew. Their hearts, their spirits, their souls, and their sights went everywhere and anywhere they needed to go. They were still connected to the ‘Oneness.’ They were even more connected now that their coccyx actually touched the Earth. They raised their arms and hands to the Heavens; they gave thanks. They sang and chanted; they called the spirits. They danced with their arms. This frightened the people even worse. How could they break their bodies and not break their souls? How could they raise their hands to God and still give thanks after what had happened to them? The people knew what they now had to do; they must get rid of them. They chopped their arms off at their shoulders. They had to stop their dance!

So what does this mean to me and mine? To tap the channels of our forefathers, our brothers, our lovers, our selves. The message still rings true today as it did then. To reconnect with the ‘Oneness’. To allow it to permeate through our feet as we walk the Earth. To allow it to connect in our inner eye. To allow it to feed our hearts, to ring true in our souls. To allow it to be the “I Am” it was meant to be. It is still as true as it once was. Still is. To be a ‘Keeper of the Beauty’ as we once were. To allow our art to shed light into the darkest recesses of our mind. To allow the healing of our hearts to heal the heart of consciousness. To grow into the light of a pure God. To grow within our sacredness. To grow within our birthright. To truly know that there is nothing that can happen to us that is more horrific than what has been revealed. To know our power, to embrace it, to love it, and to allow it to do its work.

As God blesses us in our place in this world, I let it be so, and so it is.
