The physical beauty of the Prophet (saas)

The companions of the Prophet (saas) have passed on a great many detail about him, from the beauty of that blessed individual's external appearance, his radiance and disposition that left those who beheld him in awe, to his smile, and many other beautiful aspects that Allah had manifested in him. There were a fair number of such companions, and they have given many details of his great beauty. Those Muslims who lived at the same time as the Prophet (saas) have described many aspects of the servant of Allah. While some of those describe him in broad terms, others have given long and detailed descriptions. Some of these accounts are as follows:

The Prophet (saas)'s external appearance and beauty

His companions described the beauty of the Prophet (saas) in these terms:

"The Prophet (saas) had a most handsome constitution. Some gave the smile of his beauty to that of the full moon...His nose was thin... His face was smooth...His beard was thick...His neck was the most beautiful...If the rays of the sun fell on his neck, it appeared like a cup of silver mixed with gold... The place between his shoulders was wide."67

Anas bin Malik (ra) says:

"The Messenger of Allah, was not excessively tall or short. He was not very pallid nor dark. He did not have curly hair or lank hair. Allah commissioned him at the age of forty. He stayed in Mecca ten years and at Medina for ten years and Allah the Mighty, the Majestic made him die when he was sixty. There were not twenty white hairs in his hair or beard, may Allah bless him and grant him peace."68

A text in which Ali (ra) describes the physical and moral beauty and the perfect behavior of the Prophet (saas), as well as the love and respect people feel for him.

"Rasulullah (saas) was so clean, clear, beautiful and handsome."69

Anas bin Malik (ra) says:

"The Prophet (saas) was neither tall nor short. He was handsome. His hair was neither delicate nor curly. He was neither very white, nor very brown."70



	Your friend is only Allah and His Messenger and those who believe. (Surat al-Ma'ida: 55) He is Allah - there is no god but Him. He is the Knower of the Unseen and the Visible. He is the All-Merciful, the Most Merciful. (Surat al-Hashr: 22)

Baraa bin Aazib (ra) relates:

"I never saw someone more handsome than Rasullullah. His hair reached his shoulders. The portion between his two shoulders was wide. He was neither very tall nor very short."71

Ibrahim b. Muhammed (ra), one of the grandsons of Ali (ra), informs us:

"When Ali (ra) described the Prophet (saas) he said:

'He was neither very tall nor excessively short, but was a man of medium size. He had neither very curly nor flowing hair but a mixture of both... He was reddish-white, he had wide black eyes and long eyelashes. He had protruding joints and shoulder-blades... Between his shoulders was the seal of prophecy... He had a finer chest than anyone else, was truer in utterance than anyone else, had the gentlest nature and the noblest lineage. Those who saw him stood suddenly in awe of him and those who shared his acquaintance loved him. Those who described him said they had never seen anyone like him before or since'."72



	Whoever obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah, If anyone turns away, we did not send you to them as their keeper. (Surat an-Nisa: 80)

Hassan (ra) says:

"He had great qualities and attributes, others also held him in high esteem. His blessed face shone like the full moon. He was slightly taller than a man of middle height, but shorter than a tall person...His blessed hair was slightly twisted. If his hair became parted naturally in the middle he left it so, otherwise he did not habitually make an effort to part his hair in the middle...Rasulullah (saas) had a very luminous complexion (color), and a wide forehead. His eye brows were of dense and fine hair ...

... His neck was beautiful and thin, like the neck of a statue shaved clean, the color of which was clear, shining and beautiful like silver. All the parts of his body were of moderate size. His body was proportionately jointed..."73

Abu Huraira (ra) describes:

"The complexion of Rasulullah (saas) was white with redness in it. The blessed eyes of Rasulullah (saas) were extremely black. His eyelashes were long."74

"His forehead was wide and the place between his eyebrows was bright like pure silver and eyes were black tinged with reddish hue. The hairs of his eye lashes were profuse... When he smiled or laughed, they (his teeth) shone like lightning. His lip was most beautiful...His beard was thick...His neck was most beautiful, neither long, nor short. If the rays of the sun fell on his neck, it appeared like a cup of silver mixed with gold. His chest was broad. It was even like a mirror and white like the moon light... His shoulders were wide. His palms were softer than wool."75



	Take a charity from their wealth to purify and cleanse them and pray for them. Your prayers bring relief to them. Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing. (Surat at-Tawba: 103)

Umm Ma'bad (ra), who was known for her generosity, uprightness and courage, was visited by the Prophet (saas) during the Prophet (saas)'s migration from Mecca to Medina, but failed to recognize him. However, she described him to her husband, who recognized the Prophet (saas) from her description:

"He was innocently bright and had a broad countenance. His manners were fine... He had black attractive eyes... His hair glossy and black, inclined to curl, he wore long. His voice was very commanding. His head was well formed and set on a slender neck. His expression was pensive and contemplative, serene and sublime. The stranger was fascinated from the distance, but no sooner he became intimate with him, than this fascination was changed into attachment and respect. His expression was very sweet and distinct. His speech was well set and free from the use of superfluous words, as if it were rosary of beads. His stature was neither too high nor too small. He was singularly bright and fresh. He was always surrounded by his Companions. Whenever he uttered something, the listeners would hear him with rapt attention and whenever he issued a commandment, they vied with each other in carrying it out. He was a master and a commander."76

As we can discern from those who saw him in person, the Prophet (saas) was extraordinarily handsome, with a finely proportioned body and a face that took one's breath away. He also had a very athletic and powerful build.

The Prophet (saas)'s appearance

Ahmet Cevdet Pasha, an important scholar from Ottoman times, wrote a study that effectively summarized descriptions of the Prophet (saas)'s features. That appeared in Part IV of the Qisas al-Anbiya (Stories of the Prophets), under the heading "Some Attributes of the Prophet Muhammad (saas)":

"The blessed one had a beautiful appearance, his limbs were in perfect proportion, his body was well-formed, his forehead and chest and the distance between his shoulders were broad. His neck was slender and pure as silver, his shoulders, biceps and calves were large and thick, his wrists were long, his fingers also long, and his hands and fingers rather thick. His blessed skin was softer than silk.

On his perfect countenance were a well-proportioned head, curved eyebrows, a long nose and an oval face.

His eyelashes were long, his eyes black and beautiful, the space between his largish eyebrows was clear, though his eyebrows were close together.

That chosen Prophet (saas) was shining in appearance. In other words, he was neither light nor dark, but somewhere between the two, white like a red rose, light and limpid, and the light shone from his face. His teeth were as white as pearls and bright, and the light gleamed from his front teeth as he spoke. When he laughed, it was as if his mouth gave off rays like soft lightning...

His senses were exceedingly powerful. He could hear from a long way off and see further than anyone. In essence, he had a body formed in perfection and uniqueness, and blessed ... Anyone suddenly seeing him would be consumed with love, and anyone speaking with him would feel great love in his heart and soul. The wise respected him in accordance with their degree. He greatly honoured his relatives. He would not, however, treat them better than those more worthy than them.

He treated his servants well. Whatever he wore or ate, he would give to them to wear and eat.

He was generous, beneficial, compassionate, forgiving, brave and mild. In speech, he kept to his word. In essence, his excellent morality, sharp powers of reasoning were greater than those of all other people and worthy of great praise.

In eating and apparel he contented himself with the very poorest degree and refrained from excess."77

Another text in which Ali (ra) describes the Prophet's superior morality, his astonishing beauty and the perfection of his behavior.

The Prophet (saas)'s seal of Prophethood

Allah favored the Prophet Muhammad (saas) over all beings, and declared him to be "the Final Seal of the Prophets." (Surat al-Ahzab: 40) No prophet would be sent after him, and the Qur'an would be the last revelation to guide people onto the true way. Allah manifested that unique feature of the Prophet (saas) with a mark on his body.

In Islamic sources and oral accounts, that sign between the Prophet (saas)'s shoulder blades is known as "the seal of Prophethood." It is reported by Wahb bin Munebbih (ra) that the other prophets also had similar marks, but that that of the Prophet (saas) was different:

"Allah never sent down a prophet who did not have the sign of prophethood on his right hand. The Prophet Muhammad (saas) was the only exception to this. His sign of prophethood was (not on his right hand) but between his shoulder blades. When asked about it, the Prophet said, 'This mark between my shoulder blades is like the marks on the prophets before me' ..."78

Jaabir bin Samurah (ra) relates that:

"I saw the Seal of Prophethood of Rasullullah (saas) between his two shoulders, the size of which was like that of a pigeon's egg."79

Ibrahim bin Muhammad (ra), one of the grandchildren of Ali (ra), reports:

"Whenever Ali (ra) described the nobel features of Rasulullah (saas), he used to say:

'The seal of Prophethood was situated between his shoulders. He was a last of all prophets'."80 Abu Nadrah (ra) says:

So believe in Allah and His Messenger and in the Light We have sent down. Allah is aware of what you do.
(Surat at-Taghabun: 8)

"I asked Abu Sa'eed Khudari (ra) about the Seal of Prophethood of Rasulullah (saas) He said: 'It was a piece of raised flesh that was on Rasulullah (saas)'s back'."81

"The place between his shoulders were wide and therein there was impression or seal of Prophethood inclined a little towards the right shoulder."82

Another report comes from Assib bin Yazid (ra):

"I saw the seal in between his shoulders."83

The Prophet (saas)'s hair

There are different descriptions of the length of the Prophet (saas)'s hair. It is natural that there should be discrepancies between them, as the people these accounts have come down from saw him at different times, when his hair may have been of different lengths. Yet, what can be recognized from these descriptions was that the Prophet (saas)'s hair was at ear-level at its shortest and at shoulder-length at its longest.

Anas bin Malik (ra) recalls :

"The hair of Rasulullah (saas) reached till half of his ears."84

Aisha (ra) reports:

"The blessed hair of Rasulullah (saas) was longer than those that reached the ear lobes, and shorter than those that reached the shoulders."85

Baraa bin Aazib (ra) says:

"Rasulullah (saas) was of average height, and the portion between the two shoulders was wide. His hair reached his ear lobes."86

Umm Haani, the daughter of Abu Taalib (ra) offers the following description:

"Rasulullah (saas) came to Mecca once after the hijrah (migration). His blessed hair had four plaits."87

Know that the Messenger of Allah is among you. If he were to obey you in many things, you would suffer for it. However, Allah has given you love of faith and made it pleasing to your hearts, and has made disbelief, deviance and disobedience hateful to you. People such as these are rightly guided.
(Surat al-Hujurat: 7)

The grooming of the Prophet (saas)'s hair and beard

The Prophet (saas) attached the greatest importance to cleanliness, and therefore, to his hair and beard too. It is reported in some sources that he always carried with him a comb, mirror, miswak (a small natural toothbrush), tooth-pick, scissors and a kuhl bottle.88 The Prophet (saas) advised his companions to do the same, and said: "He who has hair should honor it."89 Some other reports that have reached us of his hair and beard are:

Hassan (ra) said:

"He had a thick, dense beard."90

Anas bin Malik (ra) reports:

"Sayyidina Rasulullah (saas) often rubbed oil in his head..."91

Simak bin Harb (ra) reports:

"Jaabir bin Samurah (ra) was asked a question regarding the white hair of Rasulullah He replied: 'When Rasulullah (saas) oiled his hair, it (white hair) did not show. When he did not oil it, it showed'."92

The Prophet (saas) set an example for the believers with the importance he attached to his appearance and cleanliness. One account describes the Prophet (saas)'s attitude to such matters:

"The Prophet (saas) once intended to go to his companions and so he put on his turban and dressed his hairs...He said: 'Yes, Allah loves the actions of His servant who refines his body in order to meet his friends and brothers'."93

The Prophet (saas)'s manner of dress

His companions have handed down a great many details about the Prophet (saas)'s manner of dress. In addition to these, the Prophet (saas)'s advice to the believers about how they should dress reveal the importance he attached to this subject. For example, one hadith reports him as saying:

"No one who has even an atom's-weight of pride in his heart will enter Paradise." A man asked him, "What if he likes his clothes and shoes to look good?" (Meaning, is this counted as pride?) The Prophet (saas) said: "Allah is beautiful and loves beauty. Pride means denying the truth and looking down on other people."94

He regarded dressing well and looking good as a demonstration of the blessings of Allah:

"Allah loves to see the result of His blessing on His creatures."95

Jundub ibn Makith (r.a.) said:

"Whenever a delegation came to meet the Messenger of Allah, he would wear his best clothes and order his leading Companions to do likewise. I saw the Prophet (saas) on the day that the delegation of Kindah came to meet him; he was wearing a Yemeni garment, and Abu Bakr and 'Umar were dressed similarly."96

Another hadith relates:

"Eat what you like, and wear what you like provided that it is free from two things : extravagance and vainglory."97

The Prophet (saas) would immediately warn any of his companions who were unkempt or failed to care for their appearance. One story on the subject is from 'Ata 'ibn Yassar (ra):

"The Messenger of Allah was in the mosque, when a man with unkempt hair and an untidy beard came in. The Prophet (saas) pointed to him, as if indicating to him that he should tidy up his hair and beard. The man went and did so, then returned. The Prophet (saas) said, 'Is this not better than that any one of you should come with unkempt hair?'"98

According to the hadith narrated by one of the companions of the Prophet (saas), the Prophet (saas) told his Companions, when they were travelling to meet some brothers in faith:

"You are going to visit your brothers, so repair your saddles and make sure that you are dressed well, so that you will stand out among people like an adornment, for Allah does not love ugliness."99

Some of the information that was conveyed through the inner circle of the Prophet (saas) about his clothing are below:

Umar (ra) relates:

"I saw the Messenger of Allah (saas) ask for a new garment. He put it on, and when it reached his knees he said, 'Praise be to Allah, Who has given me clothes with which to cover myself and make myself look beautiful in this life.'"100

Umm Salama (ra) reports that:

"The Holy Prophet (saas) liked kurta (long shirt) most."101

Qurrah bin Ilyaas (ra) describes:

"I came with a group from the tribe of Muzeenah to pay allegiance to Rasulullah (saas). The button loop of Rasulullah (saas) was open."102

Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib (ra) states:

"I have never seen someone with long hair and red clothing more handsome than Rasullullah (saas). His hair reached his shoulders."103

Another report comes from Fazl ibn Abbas (ra):

"The Holy Prophet (saas) said: 'Adopt white clothes; it is the best attire.'"104

Aisha (ra) reported that:

"Allah's Apostle (saas) went out one morning wearing a cloak made of (camel's or sheep's) black hair with patterns of camel saddles upon it."105

The Prophet (saas)'s outdoor clothes

Ubayd bin Khaalid (ra) reports that:

"I was once going to Madina. I heard a person from behind me say: 'Wear your lungi (loose dress) higher because it avoids physical and spiritual impurities.' (The lungi will remain cleaner and will not become dirty by being dragged on the ground.) When I turned to see who was talking I saw that it was Rasulullah (saas)."106

Salamah bin Akwa (ra) informs us that:

"Uthmaan (ra) wore his lungi till the middle of his shin and said: 'This is how my master Rasulullah (saas) wore his lungi.'"107

The Prophet (saas)'s ring and seal

The seal of the Prophet (saas) is available in the Topkapi Palace.

Anas bin Malik (ra) says:

"Rasulullah (saas) had a ring made of silver and its (inlaid) gem was also of silver."108

When the Prophet (saas) wanted to write to the leaders of foreign states, he ordered a seal-ring to be made.

"Rasullullah (saas) therefore had a ring made, the whiteness of which is still before my eyes."109

"The inscription engraved on the ring of Rasulullah (saas) was 'Muhammad Rasulullah,' of which in the first line was engraved 'Muhammad,' in the second line 'Rasul,' and in the third line 'Allah'."110

The Prophet (saas)'s manner of walking

Abu Huraira (ra) reports:

"I did not see anyone more handsome than Rasulullah (saas). It was as if the brightness of the sun had shone from his blessed face. I did not see anyone walk faster than him, as is the earth folded for him. A few moments ago he would be here, and then there. We found it difficult to keep pace when we walked with him and he walked at his normal pace."111

One of Ali (ra)'s grandchildren, Ibrahim bin Muhammad (ra), says that the Prophet (saas) had an easy manner of walking:

When 'Ali (ra) described Rasulullah (saas), he used to say: 'When he walked, because of the speed and force of the legs, it seemed as if he was descending from a high place'."112

Hassan (ra) describes how:

"When he walked, he lifted his legs with vigour, leaned, slightly forward and placed his feet softly on the ground. He walked at a quick pace and took a rather long step. He did not take small steps. When he walked it seemed as if he was descending to a lower place. When he looked at something, he turned his whole body towards it. He always looked down. His blessed glance was focused more to the ground than towards the sky. His noble habit was to look at something with a slight glance. He made salaam (greeted) first to whomsoever he met."113

The Prophet (saas)'s manner of sitting

Qaylah bint Makhramah (ra) reports:

"I saw Rasulullah (saas) in the masjid (in a very humble posture) sitting. Due to his awe-inspiring personality, I began shivering."114

Jaabir bin Samurah (ra) says:

"I observed Rasulullah (saas) lean on a pillow, which was on his left side."115

Who could do greater wrong than someone who invents a lie against Allah
when he has been called to Islam?
Allah does not guide wrongdoing people. (Surat as-Saff: 7)

The Prophet (saas)'s way of speaking

The Prophet (saas) was a man known for his effective, wise and concise manner of speaking. His messages had a great effect on people, and everyone took great pleasure in talking with him. A number of accounts that have come down from his companions also confirm that fact. These are some of them:

"The Prophet (saas) was the greatest of the Arabs in oratory and beauty of speech. He said: 'I am the greatest orator among the Arabs'."116

Aisha (ra) describes the Prophet (saas)'s way of speaking thus:

"The speech of Rasulullah (saas) was not quick and continuous as that of yours. He spoke clearly, word by word."117

"They said: 'The Messenger of Allah used to talk little and every thing was expressed in this brief talk. In his speech, there was no defect of excess or brevity. The words came one after another like pearls. Whoever heard them remembered them. He was the sweetest in talk among his companions. He used to keep silent for long and not talk without necessity. He used not to talk evil words and what he talked was just."118

"He did not use ornamental words...."119

"... His companions did never dispute before him."120

"He used to smile much before his companions..."121

Aisha (ra) again says:

"He spoke in such a way that the words were spaced out so that those who sat with him remembered them."122

Abdullah bin Haarith (ra) reports that:

"I have not seen anyone who makes a person more cheerful than Rasulullah (saas)."123

Anas bin Malik (ra) tells us the following:

"Rasulullah (saas) used to mingle with us and joke."124

The Prophet (saas)'s pleasing scent

The Prophet (saas) attached great importance to cleanliness. He always smelt very fresh, clean and pleasant, and recommended that Muslims do the same. Accounts that have reached us from his companions give further details of this aspect of the Prophet (saas):

Jaabir bin Samura (ra) states:

"Whenever the Holy Prophet tread on any path, when someone passed by later, that they could recognize that the prophet had passed by there because they could smell the fragrance of his body."125

From Anas bin Malik (ra):

"I never felt a silk cloth, nor pure silk, nor any other thing softer than the palm of Rasulullah (saas). Nor did I smell any musk or any other fragrance, more sweet smelling than the fragrance of Rasullullah (saas)."126

Anas bin Malik (r.a) reports:

"I never smelt ambergris or musk as fragrant as the fragrance of the body of Allah's Messenger (saas) and I never touched brocade or silk and found it as soft as the body of Allah's Messenger (saas)."127

In Qisas al-Anbiya, the Prophet (saas) was described in this way:

"His body was clean and his scent beautiful. Whether or not he had used scent, his skin always had a lovely scent to it. If someone shook hands or conversed with him, or showed his friendship or affection, he would smell that clean scent all day, and if he laid that sacred hand on a child's head, that child could be distinguished from other children by that clean scent."128

The Prophet (saas)'s favorite foods

"He used not to take any hot food."129

"Meat was his most favorite curry."130

"The Holy Prophet (saas), amongst all other foods, liked pumpkin."131

"He used to eat the meat of hunted birds."132



	... they will have Gardens with rivers flowing under them. When they are given fruit there as provision, they will say, 'This is what we were given before.' But they were only given a simulation of it. (Surat al-Baqara: 25)

"He liked dried dates among dates."133

Aisha (ra) had this to say about the food the Prophet (saas) enjoyed:

"Rasulullah (saas) loved halva and honey."134

"Among foods, he liked mutton, broth, pumpkins, sweet things, honey, dates, milk, cream, melons, grapes and cucumbers. He also liked cold water."135

She adds:

"Rasulullah (saas) ate watermelon with fresh dates."136

"He never condemned the food. He used to eat what he liked and did not eat what he did not like."137

"Rasulullah (saas) loved the meat of the forequarter."138

These are some of the things the Prophet (saas) said about certain foods:

"What a nice curry vinegar is."139

"The Prophet (saas) said that mushroom is a good cure for the eyes, it also arrests paralysis."140

"Illnesses are cured by means of three things: (one of them) is a drink of honey."141

"Use olive oil as a food and ointment for it comes from a blessed tree."142

What the Prophet (saas) liked to drink

Aisha tells us that:

"The drink most liked by Rasulullah (saas) was that which was sweet and cold."143

"Nabeez was prepared from dried grapes for the Prophet (saas) and dates were, also, put in it, or it was prepared from dried dates, and grapes, too, were put in it. "144

"The best of drinks to the Messenger of Allah was sweet cold drink."145

"The Holy Prophet (saas) said; besides milk there is nothing else that serves the purpose of both milk and water."146

This is what the Prophet (saas) had to say about milk:

"When one of you eats food, he should say: 'O Allah, bless us in it, and give us food (or nourishment) better than it.' When he is given milk to drink he should say: 'O Allah! Bless us in it and give us more of it, for no food or drink satisfies like milk'."147

What the Prophet (saas) said about water

The Prophet (saas) took great care to distribute water, particularly on journeys. On one particular journey, for instance, he stopped somewhere and asked for water from those around him. After washing his hands and face, he drank from the water, and told his companions; "pour some of its water on your faces and chests."148

After drinking water, he prayed:

"All praise is due to Allah Who has made it delicious and sweet by His grace and has not made it either salty or unsavory."149

On another occasion, the Prophet (saas) said:

"Water was created pure and nothing makes it impure except that which changes its color, taste and smell."150

Some of the Prophet (saas)'s finer traits

Imam Ghazzali, known as "Hujjatul Islam," collected and set out some of the Prophet (saas)'s traits as related by such great Islamic scholars as Tirmidhi, Tabarani, Muslim, Imam Ahmad, Abu Dawood and Ibn Maja:



	What is the Garden promised to those who have done their duty like? It has rivers flowing under it and its foodstuffs and cool shade never fail. That is the final fate of those who have done their duty. But the final fate of the disbelievers is the Fire. (Surat ar-Ra'd: 35)

"The Holy Prophet (saas) was the most patient among men, the bravest, the best judge, and he who pardoned most. ... he was the most charitable man. He did not pass a single night hoarding a single dirham or dinar. Whenever any excess money came to him and if he did not then get anyone to accept it as charity, he did not return home till he gave it to the poor and the needy. He did not store up for more than a year the provision of his family members which Allah was pleased to give him. He used to take one fifth of what easily came to him out of dates and wheat. What remained in excess, he used to give in charity. He used to give away in charity to him who begged of him of anything, even out of his stored up provision.

He did not take any revenge for personal wrongs but he used take it for preservation of the honor of Allah.

He used to speak the truth even though it was sometimes a cause of trouble to himself and his companions.

He was the most modest, without pride, and his tongue was most eloquent without prolongation of speech. His constitution was the most beatiful. No worldly duties could keep him busy.

He used to go even to a distant place to see the sick, loved scents and hated a stench or bad smell, sat with the poor and the destitute, ate with them, honored those possessing honor, advised them to do good and show kindness to relatives. He did not treat harshly to anybody and accepted excuses offered to him.

He accepted sports and pastimes as lawful, played with his wives and held races with them.... He did not hate the poor for their poverty nor fear the kings for their mighty power. He used to call the people, high or low towards Allah. Allah adorned him with all the qualities and good administration

At the time when the Quran was being revealed to him, he used to smile most. When something happened, he entrusted it to Allah, kept himself free from his own strength and ability and said in invocation: 'O Allah, show me truth in a true manner or give me grace to give it up. Who are Muslims?

Over a billion people from all races, nationalities and cultures across the globe are Muslim - from the rice farms of Indonesia to the deserts in the heart of Africa; from the skyscrapers of New York to the Bedouin tents in Arabia.

Only 18% of Muslims live in the Arab world; a fifth are found in Sub-Saharan Africa; and the world's largest Muslim community is in Indonesia. Substantial parts of Asia are Muslim, while significant minorities live in India, China, Russia, North and South America, Eastern and Western Europe.

What do Muslims believe?

Muslims believe in the One, Unique, Incomparable, Merciful God - the Sole Creator and Sustainer of the Universe; in the Angels created by Him; in the Prophets through whom His revelations were brought to humankind; in the Day of Judgment and in individual accountability for actions; in God's complete authority over destiny, be it good or bad; and in life after death. Muslims believe that God sent His messengers and prophets to all people and God's final message to humanity, a reconfirmation of the eternal message and a summing up of all that had gone before, was revealed to the Last Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through the Archangel Gabriel.

Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets

Muhammad was born in Makkah in the year 570, during the period of history Europeans call the Middle Ages. As he grew up, Muhammad became known for his truthfulness, generosity and sincerity, earning the title of al-Amin, the trustworthy one.

Muhammad (peace be upon him) was of a contemplative nature and had long detested the decadence of his society. At the age of 40, while engaged in a meditative retreat, Muhammad (may the peace and blessings of God be upon him) received his first revelation from God through the Archangel Gabriel. This revelation continued for twenty-three years and is known as the Qur'an.

Muhammad (peace be upon him) began to recite the words he heard from Gabriel, and to preach the truth that God had revealed to him. The people of Makkah were steeped in their ways of ignorance and opposed Muhammad and his small group of followers in every way. These early Muslims suffered bitter persecution.

In 622, God gave the Muslim Community the command to emigrate. This event, the hijrah, 'migration', in which they left Makkah for the city of Madinah, some 260 miles to the north, marks the beginning of the Muslim calendar.

Madinah provided Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the Muslims the safe and nurturing haven from where Islam grew.

After several years, the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his followers returned to Makkah, where they forgave their enemies and established Islam definitively.

Muhammad (peace be upon him) died at the age of 63 and was buried in Madinah. At the time of his death, the greater part of Arabia was Muslim, and within a century Islam had spread to Spain in the West and as far east as China.

How did the spread of Islam affect the world?

Within a few decades of Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) death, the territory under Muslim rule had extended onto the three continents of Asia, Africa and Europe.

Among the reasons for the rapid and peaceful spread of Islam was the simplicity of its doctrine - Islam calls for faith in only one God worthy of worship. Islam also repeatedly instructs humans to use their powers of intelligence and observation.

As Muslim civilization developed, it absorbed the heritage of ancient peoples, like those of Egypt, Persia and Greece. The synthesis of Eastern ad Western ideas and of new thought with old, brought about great advances in the various fields of study. Scholars working in the Islamic tradition developed and excelled at art, architecture, astronomy, geography, history, language, literature, medicine, mathematics, and physics.

Many crucial systems such as Algebra, the Arabic numerals, and the very concept of the zero (vital to the advancement of mathematics), were transmitted to medieval Europe through Muslim scholars.

Sophisticated instruments that were to make possible the great European voyages of discovery were developed, including the astrolabe, the quadrant, good navigational charts and maps.

What is the Qur'an?

The Qur'an is a complete record of the exact words revealed by God through Angel Gabriel to the Prophet Muhammad.

The Qur'an is the principal source of every Muslim's faith and practice. It deals with all subjects that concern us as human beings - wisdom, doctrine, worship and law - but its basic theme is the relationship between God and His creatures.

At the same time the Qur'an provides guidelines for a just society, proper human conduct and equitable economic principles.

Apart from the Qur'an, Muslims also refer to the life of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as a secondary source of guidance.

Belief in the sunnah, the practice and example of the Prophet, is an integral part of the Islamic faith.

What are the "Five Pillars" of Islam?

These are the foundation of Muslim life: declaration of faith or belief in the Oneness of God and the finality of the Prophethood of Muhammad; establishment of the daily ritual prayers; concern for and almsgiving to the needy; self-purification through fasting; and the pilgrimage to Makkah for those who are physically and financially able.

Shahadah or Declaration of Faith
"There is none worthy of worship except God and Muhammad is the messenger of God." This declaration of faith is called theshahadah, a simple formula that all the faithful pronounce. The significance of this declaration is the belief that the only purpose of life is to serve and obey God, and this is achieved through the teachings and practices of the Last Prophet, Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Salah or Prayer
Salah is the name for the obligatory prayers that are performed five times a day, and are a direct link between the worshipper and God. These five ritual prayers contain verses from the Qur'an, and are said in Arabic, the language of the Revelation. Personal supplications however, can be offered in one's own language and at any time.
Zakah or Almsgiving
An important principle of Islam is that everything belongs to God, and that wealth is therefore held by human beings in trust. The wordzakah means both "purification" and "growth." Setting aside a proportion for those in need purifies our possessions, and like the pruning of plants, this cutting back balances and encourages new growth.
Sawm or Fasting
Every year in the month of Ramadan, all able Muslims fast from dawn until sundown - abstaining from food, drink, and sexual relations with their spouses.
Although fasting is beneficial to health, it is mainly a method of self-purification. By cutting oneself from worldly comforts, even for a short time, a fasting person focuses on his or her purpose in life by constantly being aware of the presence of God.
Hajj or Pilgrimage
The pilgrimage to Makkah - the hajj - is an obligation only for those who are physically and financially able. Nevertheless, over two million people go to Makkah each year from every corner of the globe providing a unique opportunity for those of different nations to meet one another.
The annual hajj begins in the twelfth month of the Islamic lunar year. Pilgrims wear special clothes: simple garments that strip away distinctions of class and culture, so that all stand equal before God.
The rites of the hajj originate from the time of the Prophet and Patriarch, Abraham (peace be upon him). These rites include going around the Ka'bah seven times, and going seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwa as did Hagar (Abraham's wife) during her search for water. The pilgrims later stand together on the wide plains of 'Arafat (a large expanse of desert outside Makkah) and join in prayer for God's forgiveness, in what is often thought of as a preview of the Day of Judgment.
The close of the hajj is marked by a festival, the 'Id al Adha, which is celebrated with prayers and the exchange of gifts in Muslim communities everywhere. This and the 'Id al Fitr, a festive day celebrating the end of Ramadan, are the two holidays of the Islamic calendar.

Top 10 Misconceptions in Islam

MISCONCEPTION #1: Muslims are violent, terrorists and/or extremists.

This is the biggest misconception in Islam, no doubt resulting from the constant stereotyping and bashing the media gives Islam. When a gunman attacks a mosque in the name of Judaism, a Catholic IRguerrilla sets off a bomb in an urban area, or Serbian Orthodox militiamen rape and kill innocent Muslim civilians, these acts are not used to stereotype an entire faith. Never are these acts attributed to the religion of the perpetrators. Yet how many times have we heard the words 'Islamic, Muslim fundamentalist. etc.' linked with violence.

Politics in so called "Muslim countries" may or may not have any Islamic basis. Often dictators and politicians will use the name of Islam for their own purposes. One should remember to go to the source of Islam and separate what the true religion of Islam says from what is portrayed in the media. Islam literally means 'submission to God' and is derived from a root word meaning 'peace'.

Islam may seem exotic or even extreme in the modern world. Perhaps this is because religion doesn't dominate everyday life in the West, whereas Islam is considered a 'way of life' for Muslims and they make no division between secular and sacred in their lives. Like Christianity, Islam permits fighting in self-defense, in defense of religion, or on the part of those who have been expelled forcibly from their homes. It lays down strict rules of combat which include prohibitions against harming civilians and against destroying crops, trees and livestock.

NOWHERE DOES ISLAM ENJOIN THE KILLING OF INNOCENTS..

The Quran says: "Fight in the cause of God against those who fight you, but do not transgress limits. God does not love transgressors." (Quran 2:190) "If they seek peace, then seek you peace. And trust in God for He is the One that heareth and knoweth all things." (Quran 8:61) War, therefore, is the last resort, and is subject to the rigorous conditions laid down by the sacred law. The term 'jihad' literally means 'struggle'. Muslims believe that there are two kinds of jihad. The other 'jihad' is the inner struggle of the soul which everyone wages against egotistic desires for the sake of attaining inner peace.

MISCONCEPTION #2: Islam oppresses women.

The image of the typical Muslim woman wearing the veil and forced to stay home and forbidden to drive is all too common in most peoples thoughts. Although some Muslim countries may have laws that oppress women, this should not be seen as coming from Islam. Many of these countries do not rule by any kind of Shari'ah (Islamic law) and introduce their own cultural standpoints on the issue of gender equity.

Islam on the other hand gives men and women different roles and equity between the two is laid down in the Quran and the example of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Islam sees a woman, whether single or married, as an individual in her own right, with the right to own and dispose of her property and earnings. A marriage gift is given by the groom to the bride for her own personal use, and she keeps her own family name rather than taking her husband's. Both men and women are expected to dress in a way that is modest and dignified. The Messenger of God (peace be upon him) said: "The most perfect in faith amongst believers is he who is best in manner and kindest to his wife."

Violence of any kind towards women and forcing them against their will for anything is not allowed. A Muslim marriage is a simple, legal agreement in which either partner is free to include conditions. Marriage customs thus vary widely from country to country. Divorce is not common, although it is acceptable as a last resort. According to Islam, a Muslim girl cannot be forced to marry against her will: her parents simply suggest young men they think may be suitable.

MISCONCEPTION #3: Muslims worship a different God.

Allah is simply the Arabic word for God. Allah for Muslims is the greatest and most inclusive of the Names of God, it is an Arabic word of rich meaning, denoting the one and only God and ascribing no partners to Him. It is exactly the same word which the Jews, in Hebrew, use for God (eloh), the word which Jesus Christ used in Aramaic when he prayed to God. God has an identical name in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam; Allah is the same God worshiped by Muslims, Christians and Jews. Muslims believe that Allah's sovereignty is to be acknowledged in worship and in the pledge to obey His teaching and commandments, conveyed through His messengers and prophets who were sent at various times and in many places throughout history. However, it should be noted that God in Islam is One and Only. He, the Exalted, does not get tired, does not have a son ie Jesus or have associates, nor does He have human-like attributions as found in other faiths.

MISCONCEPTION #4: Islam was spread by the sword and intolerant of other faiths.

Many social studies textbooks for students show the image of an Arab horseman carrying a sword in one hand and the Quran in the other conquering and forcibly converting. This, though, is not a correct portrayal of history. Islam has always given respect and freedom of religion to all faiths. The Quran says: "God forbids you not, with regards to those who fight you not for [your] faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them; for God loveth those who are just. 60:8)

Freedom of religion is laid down in the Quran itself: "There is no compulsion (or coercion) in the religion (Islam). The right direction is distinctly clear from error". (2:256)

Christian missionary, T.W. Arnold had this opinion on his study of the question of the spread of Islam: ".. of any organized attempt to force the acceptance of Islam on the non-Muslim population, or of any systematic persecution intended to stamp out the Christian religion, we hear nothing. Had the caliphs chosen to adopt either course of action, they might have swept away Christianity as easily as Ferdinand and Isabella drove Islam out of Spain, or Louis XIV made Protestanism ..."

It is a function of Islamic law to protect the privileged status of minorities, and this is why non-Muslim places of worship have flourished all over the Islamic world. History provides many examples of Muslim tolerance towards other faiths: when the caliph Omar entered Jerusalem in the year 634, Islam granted freedom of worship to all religious communities in the city. Proclaiming to the inhabitants that their lives, and property were safe, and that their places of worship would never be taken from them, he asked the Christian patriarch Sophronius to accompany him on a visit to all the holy places. Islamic law also permits non-Muslim minorities to set up their own courts, which implement family laws drawn up by the minorities themselves. The life and property of all citizens in an Islamic state are considered sacred whether the person is Muslim or not.

Racism is not a part of Islam, the Quran speaks only of human equality and how all peoples are equal in the sight of God. "O mankind! We created you from a single soul, male and female, and made you into nations and tribes, so that you may come to know one another. Truly, the most honored of you in God's sight is the greatest of you in piety. God is All-Knowing, All- Aware. (49:13)

MISCONCEPTION #5: All Muslims are Arabs.

The Muslim population of the world is around 1.2 billion. 1 out of 5 people in the world is a Muslim. They are a vast range of races, nationalities, and cultures from around the globe--from the Phillipines to Nigeria--they are united by their common Islamic faith. Only about 18% live in the Arab world and the largest Muslim community is in Indonesia. Most Muslims live east of Pakistan. 30% of Muslims live in the Indian subcontinent, 20% in Sub-Saharan Africa, 17% in Southeast Asia, 18% in the Arab world, and 10% in the Soviet Union and China. Turkey, Iran and Afghanistan make up 10% of the non-Arab Middle East. Although there are Muslim minorities in almost every area, including Latin America and Australia, they are most numerous in Russia and its newly independent states, India and central Africa. There are about 6 million Muslims in the United States.

MISCONCEPTION #6: The Nation of Islam is a Muslim group.

Islam and the so called "Nation of Islam'" are two different religions. NOI is more of a political organization since its members are not limited to a single faith. Muslims consider this group to be just one of many cults using the name of Islam for their own gain. The only thing common between them is the jargon, the language used by both. "The Nation of Islam" is a misnomer; this religion should be called Farrakhanism, after the name of its propogator, Louis Farrakhan.

Islam and Farakhanism differ in many fundamental ways. For example, Farakhan followers believe in racism and that the 'black man' was the original man and therefore superior, while in Islam there is no racism and everyone is considered equal in the sight of God, the only difference being in one's piety. There are many other theological examples that show the 'Nation's teachings have little to do with true Islam. There are many groups in America who claim to represent Islam and call their adherents Muslims.

Any serious student of Islam has a duty to investigate and find the true Islam. The only two authentic sources which bind every Muslim are 1. the Quran and 2. authentic or sound Hadith. Any teachings under the label of "Islam" which contradict or at variance with the direct understanding of fundamental beliefs and practices of Islam form the Quran and authentic Hadith should be rejected and such a religion should be considered a Pseudo-Islamic Cult.

In America there are many pseudo-Islamic cults, Farrakhanism being one of them. An honest attitude on the part of such cults should be not to call themselves Muslims and their religion Islam. such an example of honesty is Bahaism which is an off-shoot of Islam but Bahais do not call themselves Muslims nor their religion, Islam. In fact Bahaism is not Islam just as Farrakhanism is not Islam.

MISCONCEPTION #7: All Muslim men marry four wives.

The religion of Islam was revealed for all societies and all times and so accommodates widely differing social requirements. Circumstances may warrant the taking of another wife but the right is granted, according to the Quran, only on condition that the husband is scrupulously fair. No woman can be forced into this kind of marriage if they do not wish it, and they also have the right to exclude it in their marriage contract.

Polygamy is neither mandatory, nor encouraged, but merely permitted. Images of "sheikhs with harems" are not consistent with Islam, as a man is only allowed at most four wives only if he can fulfill the stringent conditions of treating each fairly and providing each with separate housing etc. Permission to practice polygamy is not associated with mere satisfaction of passion. It is rather associated with compassion toward widows and orphans. It was the Quran that limited and put conditions on the practice of polygamy among the Arabs, who had as many as ten or more wives and considered them "property".

It is both honest and accurate to say that it is Islam that regulated this practice, limited it, made it more humane, and instituted equal rights and status for all wives. What the Qur'anic decrees amount to, taken together is discouragement of polygamy unless necessity for it exists. It is also evident that the general rule in Islam is monogamy and not polygamy. It is a very tiny percentage of Muslims that practice it over the world. However, permission to practice limited polygamy is only consistent with Islam's realistic view of the nature of man and woman and of various social needs, problems and cultural variations.

The question is, however far more than the inherent flexibility of Islam; it also is the frank and straightforward approach of Islam in dealing with practical problems. Rather than requiring hypocritical and superficial compliance, Islam delves deeper into the problems of individuals and societies, and provides for legitimate and clean solutions which are far more beneficial than would be the case if they were ignored. There is no doubt that the second wife legally married and treated kindly is better off than a mistress without any legal rights or expermanence.

MISCONCEPTION #8: Muslims are barbaric, backward people.

Among the reasons for the rapid and peaceful spread of Islam was the simplicity of its doctrine-Islam calls for faith in only one God worthy of worship. It also repeatedly instructs man to use his powers of intelligence and observation. Within a few years, great civilizations and universities were flourishing, for according to the Prophet (pbuh), 'seeking knowledge is an obligation for every Muslim man and woman'.

The synthesis of Eastern and Western ideas and of new thought with old, brought about great advances in medicine, mathematics, physics, astronomy, geography, architecture, art, literature, and history. Many crucial systems such as algebra, the Arabic numerals, and also the concept of the zero (vital to the advancement of mathematics), were transmitted to medieval Europe from Islam. Sophisticated instruments which were to make possible the European voyages of discovery were developed, including the astrolabe, the quadrant and good navigational maps.

MISCONCEPTION #9: Muhammad was the founder of Islam and Muslims worship him.

Muhammad(pbuh) was born in Mecca in the year 570. Since his father died before his birth, and his mother shortly afterwards, he was raised by his uncle from the respected tribe of Quraysh. As he grew up, he became known for his truthfulness, generosity and sincerity, so that he was sought after for his ability to arbitrate in disputes. The historians describe him as calm and meditative. Muhammad (pbuh) was of a deeply religious nature, and had long detested the decadence of his society.

It became his habit to meditate from time to time in the Cave of Hira near Mecca. At the age of 40, while engaged in a meditative retreat, Muhammad(pbuh) received his first revelation from God through the Angel Gabriel. This revelation, which continued for 23 years is known as the Quran. As soon as he began to recite the words he heard from Gabriel, and to preach the truth which God had revealed to him, he and his small group of followers suffered bitter persecution, which grew so fierce that in the year 622 God gave them the command to emigrate.

This event, the Hijra 'migration', in which they left Mecca for the city of Medina, marks the beginning of the Muslim calendar. After several years, the Prophet and his followers were able to return to Mecca, where they forgave their enemies and established Islam definitively. Before the Prophet saw dies at the age of 63, the greater part of Arabia was Muslim, and within a century of his death Islam had spread to Spain in the West and as far East as China. He died with less than 5 possessions to his name.

While Muhammad (pbuh) was chosen to deliver the message, he is not considered the "founder" of Islam, since Muslims consider Islam to be the same divine guidance sent to all peoples before. Muslims believe all the prophets from Adam, Noah, Moses, Jesus etc. were all sent with divine guidance for their peoples. Every prophet was sent to his own people, but Muhammad(pbuh) was sent to all of mankind. Muhammad is the last and final messenger sent to deliver the message of Islam. Muslims revere and honor him (pbuh) for all he went through and his dedication, but they do not worship him. "O Prophet, verily We have sent you as a witness and a bearer of glad tidings and a warner and as one who invites unto God by His leave and as an illuminating lamp."(33:45-6)

MISCONCEPTION #10: Muslims don't believe in Jesus or any other prophets.

Muslims respect and revere Jesus, upon him be peace, and await his Second Coming. They consider him one of the greatest of God's messengers to mankind. A Muslim never refers to him simply as 'Jesus', but always adds the phrase 'upon him be peace' (abbreviated as (u) here). The Quran confirms his virgin birth (a chapter of the Quran is entitled 'Mary'), and Mary is considered the purest woman in all creation. The Quran describes the Annunciation as follows:

"Behold!" the Angel said, "God has chosen you, and purified you, and chosen you above the women of all nations. O Mary, God gives you good news of a word from Him whose name shall be the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, honored in this world and the Hereafter, and one of those brought near to God. He shall speak to the people from his cradle and in maturity, and shall be of the righteous." She said: "O my Lord! How shall I have a son when no man has touched me?" He said: "Even so; God creates what He will. When He decrees a thing, He says to it, "Be!" and it is" (Quran 3:42-47)

Jesus (u) was born miraculously through the same power, which had brought Adam (u) into being without a father: "Truly, the likeness of Jesus with God is as the likeness of Adam. He created him of dust, and then said to him, 'Be!' and he was." (3:59) During his prophetic mission Jesus (u) performed many miracles. The Quran tells us that he said: " I have come to you with a sign from your Lord: I make for you out of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, and breath into it and it becomes a bird by God's leave. And I heal the blind, and the lepers, and I raise the dead by God's leave." (3:49) Neither Muhammad (pbuh) not Jesus (u) came to change the basic doctrine of the brief in One God brought by earlier prophets, but to confirm and renew it.

In the Quran Jesus (u) is reported as saying that he came: "To attest the law which was before me. And to make lawful to you part of what was forbidden you; I have come to you with a sign from your Lord, so fear God and obey Me. (3:50) The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: "Whoever believes there is no god but God, alone without partner, that Muhammad (pbuh) is His messenger, that Jesus is the servant and messenger of God, His word breathed into Mary and a spirit emanating from Him, and that Paradise and Hell are true, shall be received by God into Heaven. It is not possible to perfectly translate the names and attributes of Allah from their original Arabic into English. However, here are some fairly close explanations.

Allah: He who has the Godhood which is the power to create the entities.

Ar-Rahman: The One who has plenty of mercy for the believers and the blasphemers in this world and especially for the believers in the hereafter.

Ar-Rahim: The One who has plenty of mercy for the believers.

Al-Malik: The One with the complete Dominion, the One Whose Dominion is clear from imperfection.

Al-Quddus: The One who is pure from any imperfection and clear from children and adversaries.

As-Salam: The One who is free from every imperfection.

Al-Mu'min: The One who witnessed for Himself that no one is God but Him. And He witnessed for His believers that they are truthful in their belief that no one is God but Him.

Al-Muhaymin: The One who witnesses the saying and deeds of His creatures.

Al-'Aziz: The Defeater who is not defeated.

Al-Jabbar: The One that nothing happens in His Dominion except that which He willed.

Al-Wakil: The One who gives the satisfaction and is relied upon.

Anger Management In Islam (AMI)

1.) Definition of anger or temper:

Lexical[1] meaning:

The feeling one has toward something or someone that hurts, opposes, offends, or annoys, strong displeasure.
(Example: In a moment of anger I hit my brother.)

Islamic definition: It is a destructive fire!
Prophetic hadith: “Anger is a burning coal ...” [3]

- Anger is a secret weapon of man towards of evils, but sometimes
it results in the destruction of many noble qualities.
- It snatches away the wisdom of man and thus
he becomes a brute beast devoid of any sense.
- Anger is a temptation and deception of Shaitân.[2]
- Anger is the root of all evils.
- Anger is a very bad condition that weakens the person's Imân (faith). [2]

Imam Mawlûd calls it a "swelling ocean," that is he compares it to "a swelling mass of emotion that is difficult to hold back once it is unleashed."[4]

2.) Introduction

The Messenger of Allah, Prophet Muhammad said:

"Whoever curbs his anger, while being able to act, Allah will fill his heart with certainty of faith."
Therefore the consequence for whoever does not curb his anger is that he or she will sooner or later feel its evil consequences.

Anger is a destructive emotion, as a fire which destroys our well-being, consumes our good actions, repels our friends and dear ones, frightens our children and forces the angels to report bad actions for the Heavenly Records. This is a dangerous rough road and no-one is devoid of it and it brings one close to the wrath of Allah; story:

Prophet `Isa (Jesus Christ) -peace be upon him- was once asked:
"What thing is difficult?" He said: "God's wrath." Prophet Yahya (John the Baptist) -peace be upon him- then asked:
"What brings near the wrath of God?" He said: "Anger".
Yahya - peace be upon him- asked him:
"What thing grows and increases anger?" Isa -peace be upon him- said:
"Pride, prestige, hope for honour and haughtiness." [5]

The good news is that when you are ready to confront the evil kind of anger within your soul, then you have already taken the first decisive step in fighting it. The evil kind of anger can be overcome by understanding and following the respective teachings of Islam. If you are not ready, ask yourself the test questions below.[ch.4]

3.) Clarification

Are all kinds of anger meant here always, or are there instances when anger could still be justified?
Someone could say: "How do I know that my anger is not justified, when I feel strongly about it, that in certain situations I do have the right to become angry?" (As an exception there are a few instances when it is good and allowed, such as in war when fighting the enemy, but not excessive anger.)
Answer: Yes, there are situations where anger is justified and lawful, as "in cases of religious affairs when one's honour is at stake. It is an effective preventive measure to safeguard the dignity of man. A person who has no anger is called a coward because he has got no true faith in Allah. The person fears creation and not the Creator." [2]
But certainly those instances are rare, and what is worse, for a beginner in anger management (AMI) it is difficult to distinguish between those situations from the outset. Later with some success in AMI, that will be easy.
We do not suggest that AMI means you never may get angry, for anger is not to abolished but channelled, and the aim is always to reach your goal with other, reliable and sane methods, in shâh Allah. But to begin with, it is vital to bring it down to lower levels, to temper it, in order to take control over it.

For the time being you should be extremely suspicious about anger in which form or situation what-so-ever. Be warned against it!

Remember that the real strength of a man lies in controlling his wrath or anger. In this respect the Islamic tradition is very clear:

It is reported in a hadith on the authority of Abu Huraira Allah be pleased with him, that Mohammad, the emissary of Allah peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said :
"The man is not a good wrestler; the strong man is in fact the person who controls himself at the time of anger." (Bukhari)
In another hadith Abu Hurairah (radiyallahu `anhu), reported that a man said to the Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wasallam): "Advise me!"
The Prophet said, "Do not become angry and furious."
The man asked (the same) again and again, and the Prophet said in each case, "Do not become angry and furious."
[Al-Bukhari; Vol. 8 No. 137] (see hadith in Arabic at top of page.)
Commenting on this hadith Al-Nawawî says that "he meant to not allow anger to lord over oneself and cause the loss of one's comportment." Instead to control your anger and never lose control. [11]

4.) Try To Get The Whole Picture - The Causes Of Anger

We are convinced that the Islamic guidance is the best guidance, also in respect of AMI, because it relates to all levels of human beings, where it operates its barakah (Divine blessings): the body (jism), the soul (nafs) and the spirit (rûh), the last being the highest element which governs the rest. Anger is one of several coarse qualities of the soul or heart, which have to be treated by Islam's spiritual methods. To treat the (spiritual) desease you have to know its causes. Imam al Ghazali explains them as follows:

The causes which cause anger to grow are self-conceit, self-praise, jests and ridicule, argument, treachery, too much greed for too much wealth and name and fame. If these evils are united in a person, his conduct becomes bad and he cannot escape anger. So these things should be removed by their opposites. Self-praise is to be removed by modesty. Pride is to be removed by one's own origin and birth, greed is to be removed by remaining satisfied with necessary things, and miserliness by charity.[5]

Or summarized in four words:

"Pride, prestige, hope for honour and haughtiness."[5]

The goal is to purify the heart, free it from oblivion of the rang of human beings, neglect of Allahs commands, and ... so as to reach the Divine Presence.
In this context there is the Gabriel-hadith on excellence (ihsân) in Islam (as part of a longer hadith[13]): A man asked the Emissary of Allah : "Then tell me about Ihsan." He said:
"It is to worship Allah as though you are seeing Him,
and while you see Him not yet — truly He sees you."
Also in the Quran we are constantly reminded that Allah sees and hears us, thus watching over us all the time. Knowing this how can anyone be so carried away by his (her) passions – and devoid of godfearingness (taqwâ) to behave like an ugly, crazy person, chasing around and abusing people?

It becomes clear then that in reality anger is a secret disease, like for example alcoholism, which has to be treated just like any other desease, and it is you yourself who has to take the decisive step to curb it, with Allah's help.
In this context it is important to remember that AMI is part of a comprehensive treatment of the heart, not isolated methods.
Therefore come to terms with yourself (nafs) and see your propensity toward the anger-syndrome!

To start with ask yourself the following questions:

a. Do you become angry when things are not going your way?
b. Does it make you angry when something happens contrary to what you expected or what you wished for?
c. When starting to get angry, did you ever become aware of how your emotions are kindled or heating up?
c. When you are angry, do you say or do things which normally you would not?
d. When you are angry, do you feel you have to act in a certain manner, without any control?
e. Do you - after your anger has subsided - regret what you said or did, or how you appeared in front of people?

If you answered most or all of the above questions with 'yes', then you are on your way and you will easily understand the following diagrams which show the anger levels and how to curb it over time (ch.5) :

You may ask if there is anything which can be done about this problem of losing one's temper, and you may think that this is the way you are, this is your character and that a change would be impossible. But you can change and
AMI was conceived to show how to succeed in dealing with this desease, once its evil roots have been understood. Then, soon, you will enjoy the sweet fruit of having overcome it. Someone[18] said in this respect, that winning over his anger is a sweet thing indeed.

5.) The Islamic Model Of Anger Management (AMI)

A visual model is employed for the description of anger over time:
Here we can see a line graph (red) for the fairly common development of temper or anger, where the left, vertical axis with variable h, measures the degree of temper [ º ] and the horizontal axis measuring time in minutes [min].

t1: Around t1 the level of emotion is quite normal, it is close to
the "normality-level" n1, but something happened at "t2"
t2: from here there is a steep increase in anger-level. Not long
after temper reaches its peak at "t3"
t3: anger-level stays at that extreme level for a moment or
some minute or so, then after this
t4: anger level is reduced, either more rapidly as in
L1 or more slowly with others individuals as shown in L2.

The critical timespan to employ AMI is at the outset of anger at t2, and as soon as possible, this is shown in graph d2 below[graph d2]. But anytime is better than no time!

a) There are two cures, the first is the cure at the beginning of tension build-up, see graph d2:
The critical area to address AMI is at the outset of anger at t2 when angel level has risen somewhat to n2 (blue line), ie. one has become angry and irritated, but still not "lost one's temper" completely.
AMI has to intervene here as soon as possible, as shown in line graph d2 below.

This diagram reflects a very positiv situation, in which anger level has not been allowed to rise beyond a modest "start" at t2, instead it has been stopped completely at n2 (blue line). This is the case of a person who is able to remind him-/herself at this critical moment (t2) of his standing in front of Allah (swt), and that he will have to answer Him at That Day Of Balance for everything he has done and neglected to do, or what he said.

If this method (AMI) can be employed, it will be of great help for the time being and it will save him (or her) from the evil consequences of his temper. If he still needs more assistance - and most of us do need it dearly - check for m1 - m3 below. [ in chapter b) ].
The person with such a positive reponse to anger, which we know is but the incitement of Shaitan (rajîm), can only succeed enforcing this strong kind of control if he earlier has disciplined his nafs by those many spiritual methods which are prescribed by the Islamic tradition, the obligatory, (wâjib) and the strongly recommend (the Sunnah).

b) The second cure curbing the tension of temper-build-up altogether is described in graph d3:

With given, innate levels of passion and emotion the response to anger will vary from person to person, and also from young age to mature age. Other factors also determine levels of tension generally, such as the person's living and working conditions, etc.

For some persons it may not be possible to prevent a strong, swelling attack of anger at the outset (as described in d2) because of the above reasons, and it is very difficult especially when he /she has not internalized the islamic viewpoint [see ch. 8] that whatever happens it is because Allah (swt) has allowed it to happen. Therefore they are in dire need of implementing the three most important islamic methods of anger management:

Diagram d3 reflects a person's anger level as it rises beyond t2 to t2b (the first blue line to the left) expecting to rise to a very high level (as described above in graph - d1). Here there is very little time to stop the process, the longer one is inactive not calling upon Allah (swt) the harder it will be to stop it. When the person realizes that he is without power to counter this satanic attack, he should seek refuge with Allah Almighty and utter the words of protection. (see chapters 6 & 7b). This is the first method of AMI (m1). If he needs more input and he probably will, he should use method2 (m2) and method3 (m3). There is no way he cannot to succeed in this if he is sincere.

6.) Three Instant Methods of Anger Management

These methods go hand in hand with recognizing one's position in the sight of Allah (swt), as summarized in chapter 8.

Here we'll encourage the reader to enact the prophetic advice of anger management in his own life, and to the benefit of himself and his spiritual capability, and for the peace of his familiy and everyone else:
(m1) saying the word of protection:
a`ûdhû billâhi min ash-shaytân ir rajîm
(m2) changing bodily posture:
when angry, sit down if standing — and lie down if sitting.
(m3) washing the face etc, arms, hands:
make ablution with water. (see ch. 7b)

7. Medicines recommended by Imam Al-Ghazalî

We are describing below the medicines of anger after one gets angry. This medicine is a mixture of knowledge and action.

7a. The medicine based on knowledge is of six kinds:
(1) The first medicine of knowledge is to think over the rewards of appeasing anger, that have come from the verses of the Quran and the sayings of the Prophet . Your hope for getting rewards of appeasing anger will restrain you from taking revenge.
(2) The second kind of medicine based on knowledge is to fear the punishment of God and to think that the punishment of God upon me is greater than my punishment upon him. If I take revenge upon this man for anger, God will take revenge upon me on the Judgement Day.
(3) The third kind of medicine of anger based on knowledge is to take precaution about punishment of enemity and revenge on himself. You feel joy in having your enemy in your presence in his sorrows, You yourself are not free from that danger. You will fear that your enemy might take revenge against you in this world and in the next.
(4) Another kind of medicine based on knowledge is to think about the ugly face of the angry man, which is just like that of the ferocious beast. He who appeases anger looks like a sober and learned man.
(5) The fifth kind of medicine based on knowledge is to think that the devil will advise by saying: " You will be weak if you do not get angry!" Do not listen to him!
(6) The sixth reason is to think: " What reason have I got to get angry? What Allah wishes has occured!"

7b. The medicine based on action is of three kinds:
(m1) When you get angry, say: I seek refuge in God from the accursed evil (a`ûdhû billâhi min ash-shaytân ir rajîm). The Prophet ordered us to say thus.
When Ayesha (ra) got angry, he dragged her by the nose and said:
"O dear Ayesha, say: O God, you are the Lord of my prophet Muhammad, forgive my sins and remove the anger from my heart and save me from misguidance."
(m2) If anger does not go away by this means, you will sit down if you are standing, lie down if you are sitting, and come near to earth, as you have been created of earth. Thus make yourself calm like the earth. The cause of wrath is heat and its opposite is to lie down on the ground and to make the body calm and cool.
The Prophet said: Anger is a burning coal. Don't you see your eyebrows wide and eyes reddish? So when one of you feels angry, let him sit down if standing, and lie down if sitting.
(m3) If still anger does not stop, make ablution with cold water or take a bath, as fire cannot be extinguished without water.
The Prophet said : "When one of you gets angry, let him make ablution with water as anger arises out of fire."
In another narration, he said: "Anger comes from the devil and the devil is made of fire." [5]

8.) Summary

AMI has to do with keeping the right balance in one's life, regarding various aspects of it, such as foodintake, sexuality, desire for position and power, and so on. Prophet Muhammad was the best human being to keep to this balance and to be a guide of the middle way sirât-al mustaqîm, the way of moderation. Man has to balance between wrathghadab and mercy rahma, never losing sight of the religious priority of mercy over wrath or anger. [22]

For these methods or ways to become reality one has to come to forbearance and humility in all cases. This is especially clear when the issue is not to uphold the dîn (religion) of Islam, but the problem is from our expectations of the dunya or of other people. And if the defense of Islam is at stake, one must still not rush towards action under the pressure of anger, but one has to excuse oneself, first calm down and stick to what Imam Al-Ghazalî's advised the Muslims [12], who stated that anger "is acceptable only a the right time, in the right place, for the right reasons, and with the right intensity." [23]
When one has internalized the islamic viewpoint that whatever happens is because Allah (swt) has allowed it to happen and then also by knowing oneself, one can strive to rid oneself from selfcenteredness and egotism, for in the words of S. Ahmad Zarrûq, "people are filled with themselves". With the help of Allah, one will be able to let go of what ultimately is beyond our restriced, illusory domain of power, and arrive step-by-step at a control of one's anger by understanding the rule of "the right time, in the right place, for the right reasons, and with the right intensity." With the whole effectiveness and barakah (heavenly powers) of the Islamic way - living Islam -, one will by Allah's leave (bi-idhni-LLah) win over this nafs ( an-nafs al-ammara bi-ssu' ) [26] - this soul commanding us to do evil - and taste the sweet taste of victory over one's worst enemy.

To become aware of oneself is a step towards knowing oneself, and according to a famous saying in Islam, whoever knows himself he knows his Lord. [27]

9.) Story Of `Ali (kAw)* Not Acting On Anger

There is a famous story about `Ali (karrama-llâhu wajhahu) according to which he was fighting against a disbeliever and had the intention of killing him due to al bughd fi Allah (hatred for the sake of Allah). After `Ali (karrama-llâhu wajhahu) subdued him and sat on his chest with the intention of killing him, the man spat on his face. `Ali (karrama-llâhu wajhahu) at once let him go.
The man was amazed and said, "You should have become even more angry due to my spitting at you and should have hastened in killing me. Why did you spare me?"
`Ali (karrama-llâhu wajhahu) replied, "Due to this action of yours mynafs became involved and my intention did not remain purely for the sake of Allah."
The light of sincerity had such a cleansing effect that it purged the impurities and kufr of the disbeliever's heart, and he recited the kalima(profession of faith) at once, and became Muslim. [28]

SOME of the ERRORS in the HOLY BIBLE

Today, a big source of income is provided by writing a new Bible and selling it, by continuously changing the Holy Bible, and by publishing new ones. Every Westerner has a Holy Bible in his house, whether he believes or not. Moreover, most Western peasants do not know of any other books, except the Bible. They do not read any other books besides the Holy Bible. The Westerners' cultural level is not as high as most of us think. Those living in villages can read and write, but they do not know what happened in the world. They only read the Holy Bible. That is why every new "reviewed and corrected" Holy Bible is published in the millions, and thereby, every year publishers earn millions of dollars. As a result, we claim that no profession is as profitable as publishing new Holy Bibles by way of changing it from time to time.

Western magazines often say "there are mistakes in the Holy bible." Sometimes there may be some amazing articles written by some famous scientists and theologists. One of them is below:
Now, you too, just like me, will ask yourself: How can the word of Allahu ta'ala be translated incorrectly? How can the word of Allahu ta'ala be revised by men? How can the word of Allahu ta'ala be examined? And say to yourself: Is it possible for such a document or text, which is continuously being changed and corrected, to be "the word of Allahu ta'ala?" Moreover, you will be completely surprised to read the words which are in the prologue of the King James Version, which was changed in 1971 for the second time. The religious committee that did the latest correction states in the prologue as follows: "... The translation of the Holy Bible, which was ordered to be prepared by King James, is extremely perfect. And it can be assumed that it is the highest work of any English publications. But, what a pity that this Book contains so many grave and serious mistakes that require it to be corrected over and over again.

Now, let us think the matter over once again. A religious committee assembled and found a lot of grave mistakes in the Book which had previously been looked upon as the word of Allahu ta'ala, between the years 1020 (1611) and 1391 (1971), and decided that those mistakes had to be corrected. After this, can anybody believe that this Book is "the word of Allahu ta'ala?" We will narrate a pleasant story to you below. The narrator of the story is a person who had scientific discussions with Christian scientists and men of religious authorities on the Holy Book as well as the Christian dogma and successfully proved that the Holy bible has been corrupted. This person says:

"We have seen an article, dated September 8, 1957, in a magazine called Awake, which is published in the U.S.A. Here is the article: 'It is strange but there have been 50,000 mistakes in the Holy Bible!' Recently, a young Christian bought a copy of the Holy Bibles "K J V" (King James Version). Since he believed it was the word of Allahu ta'ala, he thought there were no mistakes in it. But he was surprised when he read an article, namely, "Realities About the Holy Bible," that was written in the magazine look. It said that a religious council formed in the year 1133 (1720) found 20,000 errors in the K.J.V. He was greatly disappointed. When he talked to his religious friends about this matter, they told him that there were 50,000 errors in today's Bible, not 20,000. The young man became unconscious. Now he asked me: 'For Allah's sake! Please answer me! Is this Bible, which I believe to be the word of Allah, full of mistakes?'

"I had read that magazine carefully and kept it. It was about five months ago when someone knocked at the front door of my house. When I opened the door I saw a smiling, kind, and sincere young man. After he had greeted me respectfully, he showed his identification card. "Jehovah's Witness!" was written on that card. I knew that this was the name given to young missionaries. That young missionary, using a very soft voice, said to me: 'First of all, we deemed it to be our duty to invite educated people, who are out of the right way, to Christianity, which is the true religion. I brought for you some good books which contain quality texts quoted from the Bible, which is the word of God. Let me give them to you. Read them and decide for yourself.' I invited him in. I made coffee for him. I think he thought he had deceived me. After we had drunk the coffee, I asked him: 'My dear friend! You accept the Holy Bible, as the word of Allahu ta'ala, don't you?' He responded saying 'of course.' I said: 'So, there are no errors in the Holy Bible, are there?' He said: 'Never.' Then I showed him the magazine Awake and said: 'This is a magazine published in the USA which is a Christian country. This magazine says there are a total of 50,000 errors in the Bible. If it were an Islamic magazine, you would be free to deem it important or not. Now, don't you have to accept the words in a magazine published by a man who is a Christian ? So, what do you think of this claim?' The young man was suddenly surprised. He said: 'Will you let me read the magazine please?' He read it again and again. I watched his face and how he became ashamed. I felt difficulty in not laughing. At last he found an answer to give me. He said 'look! This is a magazine printed in 1957. Now, we live in the year 1980. It means, 23 years have passed. I think the errors have been found and corrected during this time.' I asked him seriously: 'O.K. but, I wonder how many thousands of those 50,000 errors were corrected. Which errors are the corrected ones? Can you give me information about them?' He said, putting down his head: 'I'm afraid I can't do that.' I added: 'My dear guest! How can I believe the Holy Bible is Allahu ta'ala's book when it is often changed and corrected and contains 50,000 errors. Not even a letter in the Qur'an al-karim, which we believe to be Allahu ta'ala's book, has been changed up to now. There are no errors in it, not even a single one. You want me to be a Christian, but your guide, the Bible, is full of errors. So, the way you have chosen is doubtful. Now, how can you explain this dilemma to me?' The poor man was surprised and confused. He left me hurriedly saying: 'I'll see some great priests and come to you again to answer your questions.' But, since that day, I haven't seen him. I have been waiting for him for months. But no word from him up to now."

Now, let me give you some more information about the mistakes and the contradictions of terms in the Bible.

First of all, let me tell you that those who tried and found errors in the Torah and the Bibles are members of the church. They have fallen upon the contradictions, and now they are trying to find a way to get rid of them. Philips, who published a book entitled The Modern Bible Translated Into English in London, in 1971, says about the Book of Matthew as follows:

"It is asserted by some people that Matthew, who was one of the apostles and is supposed to have written a book in the Holy Bible entitled with his own name, did not write it himself. Today many members of the church claim that this book was written by a mysterious person. This mysterious person has changed Matthew's book according to his point of view and added some other words to it. His writing style is clear and fluent. Whereas, the writing style of the authentic Book of Matthew is more complex, but the words are more logical. Matthew used to write down what he heard and saw after he had weighed them in his mind and was absolutely convinced that they were the words of Allahu ta'ala. But, in contrast, the Book of Matthew, as we have it now does not seem to have been written so carefully."

Since the words of Allahu ta'ala cannot be changed continuously, the example above is enough proof to show that today's Book of Matthew has been written by human beings. The original Book of Matthew has disappeared and an unknown man has written a new Bible in its place. Nobody knows who this man is.

As it is known, the four apostles' books that are in the New Testament of today's Holy Bible were written by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Only John, the son of Hadrat Isa's aunt, had actually seen Hadrat Isa, but he wrote his book in Samos after Hadrat Isa had been taken up into heaven. Neither Luke nor Mark had seen Hadrat Jesus (Isa). In fact, Mark was not an apostle. He was only a translator for Peter. Furthermore, not only the Book of Matthew, but also the book of John is claimed to have been written or changed by someone else. In short, there are many rumors about these four books. But everybody in the world agrees with the idea that: These four books, written by human beings (as you will see below) consist of the tales which convey the same story differently. They are written by human beings.

We would like to mention another aspect of today's Torah and Bibles. The story below is narrated by a man who had scientific discussions with Christians and put them in a position of not being able to answer.

"One day, I called upon my Christian neighbors and said: 'I have been studying the Holy Bible lately. Therefore, I want to read a quote from it to you.' They were very happy to hear that I was busy with the Holy Bible, thinking that 'perhaps, he is about to embrace the true faith.' They hurried around me. I gave a Holy Bible to everybody and requested them to open it to the 37 th chapter of the Book of Isaiah. Then, I said 'Now, I'll read this book from the Bible in my hand. Please follow me and pay attention to see if I am reading everything exactly.' All of them began to listen to me carefully while following the text. The text I read was as follows:

'And it came to pass, when King Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the Lord.

And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests covered with sackcloth, unto Isaiah, the Prophet, the son of Amoz.

And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of blasphemy: for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth."

And I continued to read some more, but while I was reading, I stopped and asked a few times, 'Any questions? Am I reading precisely.' They always affirmed, saying, 'Yes, you are reading precisely.' Then I said to them sharply, 'Now, I'll reveal something to you. The verses I have read are in the 19 th chapter of Second Kings. But, the verses you have followed are in the 37 th chapter of Isaiah. So, these two books are exactly the same. It means that one of them was copied completely. But, I do not know which one was copied from which. It will be your business to decide on this matter. But the books that you have deemed to be holy were stolen from each other. Here is the proof.' They all became furious and cried out saying, 'It cannot be. It is not possible for something like this to happen.' They took the Bible from my hand immediately. They checked it carefully. They were quite puzzled seeing that the verses I had read were in Second Kings 19 and that they were identical to the verses in Isaiah 37. I said to them: 'Do not be angry with me, but is it appropriate for a holy book to have examples of plagiarism in it? How can I believe in a book like this?' All of their heads were lowered. They confirmed the truth unwillingly."

Now, let me show you some more paragraphs in the Holy Bible which cannot be understood.
A verse from Matthew 9:9: "And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him: Follow me. And he arose, and followed him."

Now let's examine the statements above. If Matthew wrote them himself, why should he put them down as if he heard the story from someone else named Matthew? If he had written it himself, he should have told it like this: "And as Jesus passed forth from thence, I was sitting at the receipt of custom. He saw and saith unto me: Follow me. I arose, and followed him."
From the Book of Luke 1:3: "For as much as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us. Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word, it seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus."

It is understood from this paragraph that Luke wrote his book in a time when some other men were busy writing Bibles.

Luke remarks that there exist no Bibles written by any apostles. By reason, he distinguished apostles from those who were busy writing Bibles by saying "Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word."

There was no need for him to say that he was a disciple of one of the apostles. It would bring him no advantage because in that century there were many compilations, texts, and booklets attributed to the apostles. Maybe, he intended it to be a proof to prove that he himself examined every fact in detail and learned from the original source.

A verse from John 19:35: "And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe."

If this passage had been written by John himself, he should not have said "And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe."
If you examine these quotes above, you'll see that the three apostles ('Matthew, Luke, John) did not mention themselves but an unknown man. Who he was is not clear. Who is this man? Is he a man? Is he a prophet? Who are the servants of the word? Who is the man who stood up and followed Hadrat Isa? Who is the witness? How can a religious book be so incomprehensible and full of so many mysteries. Who is witness for whom is still unknown.
Now, let us study the contradictions in the Holy Bible.

II. Samuel 24:13: "So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thine enemies, while they pursue thee?"

Now, let us read in the First Chronicles (21:11) about the same story: "So Gad came to David, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, choose thee either three years' famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee. Or else three days the sword of the Lord, even the pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the Lord destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel."

You see the great difference regarding the same subject in the two books of the Holy Bible, which is claimed to be the word of Allahu ta'ala. Which one must we believe in? Does Allahu ta'ala contradict Himself?

The differences between the books of today's Holy Bible are so numerous that if we tried to convey all of them, this would be a tremendous book. However, we shall mention a few more contradictions so as to give our readers a more definitive understanding.
Second Chronicles 36:5: "Jehoiachin was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem."

Second Kings 24:8: "Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he began to reign." There is a seven year difference between the ages. Apparently, those who have written this holy book did not take into consideration this discrepancy.

Another example:

Second Samuel 10:18: "And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew the men of seven hundred chariots of the Syrians, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their host, who died there."

Now, a description of the same battle in the book, First Chronicles 19:18: "But the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand men which fought in chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shophach, the captain of the host."

Again, pay attention to the differences: According to the first book there were seven hundred chariots, but according to the second book there were seven thousand, or ten times as many chariots. According to the first book, forty thousand horsemen were killed, but according to the second book they were footmen, not horsemen.

If the books in the Holy Bible give such varying explanations, who can believe that they are the words of Allahu ta'ala? Can we say, Allah forbid, that the All-knowing, Almighty is unable to distinguish footmen from horsemen? Does He not know the difference between seven hundred and seven thousand? To assume and declare such contradictory scripture to be the words of Allahu ta'ala is the worst slander and insolence one can perpetrate against Allahu ta'ala. Let us go over some more examples.

The matter we shall examine below concerns the sacrificial area (sacrificing pool) that Hadrat Sulaiman had built in his palace.

The First Kings 7:26: "And it was a handbreadth thick, and the brim thereof was wrought like the brim of a cup, with flowers of lilies: It contained two thousand baths." (36)

Now, in the same book, Second Chronicles 4:5: "And the thickness of it was a handbreadth, and the brim of it like the work of the brim of a cup, with flowers of lilies; and it received and held three thousand baths."

As you see again, there are one thousand baths, that is, thirty-seven hundred liters of difference. Apparently, those who wrote these books did not cooperate with each other and recorded what they remembered without examining the book overall. Thus, this "holy" scripture contradicts itself while being proffered as the words of God. Let us give one more example:
Second Chronicles 9:25: "And Solomon had four thousand stalls for horses and chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen; whom he bestowed in the chariot cities, and with the king at Jerusalem."

Let us read the same story from First Kings 4:26: "And Solomon had forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots."

As you see here, the number of the stalls has increased ten times.

It can be said, "Mostly there are number differences. Is the number difference so important?" Let me respond to this question with a statement from Albert Schweizer. He said: "Even the biggest miracles cannot prove that two and two equal five, or that there are angels on the circumference of a circle. And also, the most enormous miracles, no matter how many they are, cannot remove any contradictions or mistakes which lie in the Christian doctrine."

Lastly, let us examine some textual contradictions.

Matthew 27:44: "The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth." But, Luke (23:43) says: "One of the thieves swore at Hadrat Jesus. The other one heard it and scolded him saying: "Do not do that. He is having trouble like us. And Jesus said unto him, "Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise."

The difference between these two passages can be seen apparently.

According to Mark, after Hadrat Jesus had been pulled down from the cross, while he was among the dead, he talked to his apostles and then ascended into heaven on that same day. However, according to Luke, Hadrat Jesus made his ascent after he had been among the dead for forty days.

It is possible to give many examples like those above. But the size of this book is not large enough to contain all of them. Turmedo, the priest who became a Muslim and whom we introduced to you in the preface of this book, gives some examples himself:

Matthew 3:4: "...and his meat was locust and wild honey." In the same book and just a few chapters below (11:18): "For John came neither eating nor drinking."

The old priest has drawn attention to another point:

Matthew 27:51: "And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent. And the graves were opened, and many bodies of the saints which slept arose. And came out of the graves after this resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many."

The priest Anselmo Turmedo, who became a Muslim says: "This description of the tragedy you have already read has been completely derived from an old book. This record was written by a Jewish historian when Titus conquered and destroyed Jerusalem. Now we see the same phrases in the book of Matthew. In other words, somebody has inserted these words into the Book of Matthew." This proves again the assertion: "The book of Matthew is not the actual book written by Matthew himself." And it brings us back to the mysterious person who made those insertions and wrote the book of Matthew.

Let us cite another historical incongruity:

It says in Genesis 16:15: "And Ha'gar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son's name, which Ha'gar bare, Ish'ma-el." But after a few pages, that is, Genesis 22:2, it states: "And He said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah." In other words, the fact that Hadrat Abraham had another son named Ismail was forgotten.

Leaving these mistakes aside, which provoke boredom in our readers, let us try to find out the origins of the books which make up today's Holy Bible, which is believed in by today's Christians and Jews.

The first books in the Holy Bible are Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. They call these five books the Torah (Tawrat). They suppose the real Torah of Moses ('alaihi 's-salam) consisted of these five books.

We have written above what was said about the Book of Isaiah. As it is rumored, it was written by someone else.

The Book of Judges might have been written by Ismail.
The Book Of Ruth : Author is not known.
The first Book of Samuel : Author is not known.
The second Book of Samuel : Author is not known.
The first Book of the Kings : Author is not known.
The second Book of Kings : Author is not known.

The first Book of Chronicles : Possibly written by Ezra, who was a Hebrew rabbi, a man of religion that lived 350 years before Hadrat Jesus Christ ('alaihi 's-salam).

The second book of Chronicles: It is possible that it too was written by Ezra. The fact that Ezra means 'Uzair is written in the book Munjid. But the writer of these books is not 'Uzair ('alaihi 's-salam). He is a Jewish man named Ezra.

Ezra : Ezra, himself, wrote it.
Esther : Author is unknown.
The Book of Job : Author is unknown.
The Book of Psalms : It means the chapters of Zabur

It is said that they are the verses which belong to David ('alaihi 's-salam), but it also contains some Psalms of Bani Korah, Asaf, Ezrahi, Heman and Hadrat Sulaiman ('alaihi 's-salam).

Jonah : Author is unknown.
Habakkuk : A book written

by a person whom nobody knows. We do not know where he was from, his pedigree, or his job.

This is a very brief summary about the books of the Old Testament in the Holy Bible.
As for the "New Testament," since it has already been explained with its many contradictions and since the necessary information about the apostles has been written, we feel it is unnecessary to repeat them.

Moreover, in many cases, the Bible is simply meaningless. For example: "The wrestling of Hadrat Yaqub (Jacob) with Allah and defeating Him in his dreams" or "the sexual intercourse between Lut ('alaihi 's-salam) and his daughters." Since the Christians have acknowledged how infamous these words are, they have begun to delete them from the Holy Bible.

At this point, let us examine the way today's Holy Bible expresses itself and see what it tries to teach human beings.

As an example, we have taken an article from Genesis, the first book. This book talks about the first human beings, the first prophets, and the great prophets like Adam, Noah, Abraham (alaihimussalavatu wattaslimat). It also outlines how the Hebrew families were formed. Here we quote a few verses from the beginning of the 38 th chapter of Genesis, which talk about Judah, who was the father of the Jews:

"And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah. And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Cananite, whose name was Shuah; and he took her and went in unto her. And she conceived, and bare a son;..." Briefly, it means: Judah is the father of the Jewish race. He went to a man from Adulla. He saw there the daughter of a man from Cannan. Her name was Shuah. He took the girl and entered her body. She became pregnant and gave birth to a son.

Now, please, putting your hand on your heart (it means: "Tell me frankly."), and answer this question. What does a religious book teach? A religious book teaches people what they must do and what they must not do. It gives them some advice about this world and the next world. It rebukes them for their bad behavior and praises them for their good deeds. It instructs them on their duties to Allahu ta'ala and how to treat each other. It explains how to live in peace. Briefly, a religious book is a book of morality.

Which one of these points is in the scripture above? It is apparently a story of fornication. This passage could be accepted as pornographic or obscene and banned in every country. Likewise, there are many other immoral scriptures in this book which is believed to be a Holy Book by Christians and the Jews. For example, in the 30 th and subsequent verses of the 19th chapter of Genesis in the Old Testament, the Prophet Lot is alleged to have had sexual intercourse with his own two daughters after they induced him to get drunk by having him drink alcohol, and even worse, as a result, his daughters bore baby boys. Hadrat David is supposed to have had sexual intercourse with Bathseba, Uria's wife. Uria was one of his commanders. After seeing her naked while she was taking a bath, the Prophet sent Uria to the most dangerous battle front in order to get rid of him, according to the words written in the 11th chapter of Second Samuel in the Old Testament. Today, in many European museums, there are pictures illustrating Hadrat David watching Bathseba or of his sending Uria to die. In European languages, there is the expression "the letter of Uria" which means "death- warrant, or very bad news." What do the people who read these kind of stories in the Bible learn? They learn about the men who were forced to be in the same bed with their brother's wives; the fathers- in -law who caused their own son's wife to become pregnant; the father who had sexual intercourse with his own daughter; the religious men (the men who had religious authority) who had sexual intercourse with the wives of those who worked in their offices.

These stories could cause us to go mad. Even some Christians do not believe in these ugly stories and reject them. In an issue of the magazine Plain Truth published in 1977, it said: "While you are having your children read the Holy Bible, you must be very careful because in the Holy Bible there are immoral and degenerate stories. In the minds of those children who will read them very corrupt and wrong ideas will be formed about the relationships between the members of their own families. These stories of fornication, which are mostly in the Old Testament, must be deleted from the Bible, then this purged Bible can be given to them. The same magazine adds: "The Bible must be revised again because with its present form, it does not encourage good morals; on the contrary, it encourages the youth towards immorality."

The famous man of letters Bernard Shaw was more intolerable about the Bible and said: "In the world, the most dangerous book I have ever read, is the Bible. It must be kept under a firm lock. Its appearance must be prevented."

In his book about the Holy Bible, Dr. Stroggie, referring to Dr. Parker, says: "When you read the Holy Bible you feel yourself lost among the subjects which contradict each other. There are too many different and strange names in the Holy Bible. Especially, in the Book of Genesis, they considered pedigrees only. Who was born from whom and how it happened? These are told continuously. What has this to do with me? What connection do these stories have with loving and worshipping Allahu ta'ala? How can we become better men? What is Doomsday? How and who are we going to submit our accounts to? These aspects are hardly addressed. Mostly there are different legends. They begin the night before finishing the day."

In his book entitled Canon of the New Testament, professor F.C. Burkitt wrote: "The four descriptions of Hadrat Jesus Christ ('alaihi 's-salam) in those four Bibles are different from each other. The people who wrote them did not want to coordinate those books. That is why they give conflicting information. There is no relationship between them. While some scripture are like incomplete stories, others seem as if they are quoted from a famous book."

This is said on the 582 nd page of the second volume of the Encyclopedia of Religion and Ethics: "Hadrat Jesus Christ ('alaihi 's-salam) did not write a book nor ordered any of his disciples to write anything." In other words, this great encyclopedia proves that those four books in the Bible that are written by the apostles are composed of different stories with no religious value.

Today, while scientists, historians, and even the Christian men of religious authority from Europe announce that the existing "Torahs and Bibles are corrupt," the enemies of religion, who deny the value of morality, and who are ignorant of spiritual knowledge, as a result of being excessively proud over their material progress, discount all religions by using the depravity in the Torahs and Bibles as a proof. In addition, they think that they are right to deny miracles. Yet, it is a basic principle for Muslims and Christians, in brief for all religious people, to believe in miracles. The man who tries to prove religious knowledge and faith through his intellect, which is impossible, will go astray. Man is the enemy of what he does not know or understand. Such a pathetic man who is afflicted with the disaster of denying miracles is Ernest O. Hauser, a famous American author of religious books. In his article published in the year 1979, he misinterprets miracles and to a great extent, he insults religious people. In order to deceive youngsters, he took the articles of some atheists as a proof. Shall we read his article together?

"It is said in the Book of Matthew 14:19: ... 'And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes... And they did all eat, and were filled... And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.'

"The most famous miracle of Hadrat Jesus, which is a subject of debate even in our time, is described like this in the Book of matthews.

"A miracle is something extraordinary, done by a prophet to show his own ability and strength in a way contrary to natural laws. But today, how can we propose and except a Christian who has grown up in a modern environment, while having learned the latest technology and science to believe these miracles? But, it is impossible to delete them from the Bible. So, we have to study on miracles carefully and in detail. We have been brought up hearing about so many of the miracles performed by Jesus Christ ('alaihi 's-salam) since the time of our childhood. Among them, his turning water into wine at a wedding in Canan, his calming the terrible storm in Galileo, his curing the blind, his walking on the sea up to his apostles' boat, and his giving life to Lozarus, who had died, have been drilled into our minds. In fact, most of the four Bibles are full of miracles. Miracles are contained in the best sections of the four books of the apostles. When the honorable Jesus came to the Jewish people, he had to perform miracles in order to prove that he was a prophet. He did this because the Jews opposed him and said: 'You claim yourself to be a prophet. Therefore, you must show us miracles in order for us to believe you.' He even had to show miracles to some of his apostles, who had doubts from time to time. For example, when a terrible storm broke out while they were traveling on a boat in the sea, they said: 'Oh! Lord! We are about to die by drowning. Help us, please!' As soon as he signalled, the storm stopped. This incident had a great affect on the apostles. They kneeled down for mercy. They confirmed their belief in him. Later on, when the apostles told this story to other Jews they also admired Jesus and became his followers. [Matthew chapter 8]. It is said in the 37 th and the following verses in the 10th chapter of the Book of John that Jesus ('alaihi 's-salam) said, "If I do not do the works of my Father, believe me not. But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in Him." Those miracles had such a great affect that the famous religious Jew Nicodemus, who did not believe in Hadrat Jesus Christ's ability to work miracles, visited him one night and said to him: 'From now on, I believe that you have been sent by Allah because you cannot do these miracles without the help of Allahu ta'ala.' We know that Hadrat Jesus ('alaihi 's-salam) never liked displaying these miracles; he was even ashamed. He said to a leprous man whom he cured only by touching: 'Tell nobody that I cured you.' He deemed it sufficient to say a few words and to act modestly when he performed a miracle. According to the Bible, he said to a woman whose son he had revivified: 'Go on your way, your child is alive.' He used to only say to the patients he cured: 'Get out of the bed and walk.' In fact, those miracles were completed by a little gesture made with his hands or by touching. Hadrat Jesus Christ's compassion and mercy usually were the basis for the miracles being exposed. One day, he met two blind men on the side of the road; they begged him for help. Hadrat Jesus ('alaihi 's-salam) pitied them, and when he rubbed their eyes with his hands, they were able to see again. As to the miracle reported by Luke, this one also shows how merciful Jesus was. Hadrat Jesus Christ met a funeral ceremony for a poor woman's only son. Since he felt compassion for the woman, who was in great trouble, he revivified her dead son. Today, there are many Christians who deny these miracles. A new scientist who believes in the honorable Jesus Christ declares that Jesus ('alaihi 's-salam) could not perform such miracles. Yet in 1162 (1748), the famous Scotch historian David Hume said: 'Miracles violate the laws of nature, which are based on definite and fixed fundamentals. It is impossible to change these laws. That is why, miracles cannot be believed.'

"But, the most important opinion is that of Rudolph Buthman, a man of religious authority in today's world. This theologist says: 'For a man who has electricity, radio and a television set in his home, it is impossible for him to believe in those imaginary miracles written in the Bible.'

"In order to understand what the origins of those miracles were and to give logical explanations for them ,various experiments have already been done. For example, the miracle of making two fish sufficient for more than five thousand people occurred in a different way. Hadrat Jesus Christ ('alaihi 'ssalam) went out for a walk with some followers. When it was time to eat everybody presented the food he had brought with him. Hadrat Jesus ('alaihi 's-salam) added his two fish and five loaves of bread which he had brought, and they all ate together. The miracle of Hadrat Jesus' walking on the sea as far as his apostles' ship was only an optical illusion. We all know that a man walking along the shore of the sea on a foggy day may appear to be walking on the water. As to the miracle concerning his stopping a storm, the fact is that when Jesus ('alaihi 's-salam) signalled, the storm was coming to an end anyway. It is correct for you to think that even if he did not signal, the storm was ending anyway. In fact, all of these miracles were reported by those who had seen them. A man who witnesses an event like this, being misled by his emotions, can diminish or exaggerate an event, or say something contrary to the truth. He may tell, not what he witnessed, but how he thought things to be. However our discussion on miracles has almost ended, but it can be concluded that there are few people left who believe the miracles in the Bibles. Recently, a well-known archbishop said: 'Even if a man does not believe in miracles, he can be a true Christian because the fundamental principle of Christianity is to believe in God and have pity for human beings.' This means that when we are reading the Bible, even if we accept it as a legendary book and the miracles in it as imaginary experiences or not, it has no connection with being religious.

"It is remarkable that, on the one hand, the miracles performed by Hadrat Jesus Christ ('alaihi 's-salam) caused him to become world famous, but, on the other hand, they also caused a great number of people to become his enemy. When the Jewish men of religious authority heard that Hadrat Jesus Christ ('alaihi 's-salam) had cured a sick man in Bathesda (Baitania) and revivified Lazarus, they said: 'This man is attracting all the people towards himself by performing these miracles. He almost designates himself to be God. In order to protect ourselves against his harm, we must kill him.' Then, they complained about him to the Romans. On that day, Hadrat Jesus Christ ('alaihi 's-salam) was performing his last miracle by putting a man's ears back into their proper places after they had been cut off by Peter as a result of the servant speaking against Hadrat Jesus. This man was the servant of the chief diviner and had come to catch Jesus ('alaihi 's-salam) along with the Roman soldiers. By forgiving him, the Prophet showed the world that 'man should be compassionate towards his enemies also.'

[According to the information in the book History of the Jews written by H. Hirsch, a Jewish man of religion authority, the Jews formed an assembly called The Assembly of Seventies so that they could get their community to explicitly follow the orders of the Torah. The head of that assembly was named The Chief Diviner. Those Jewish men of religion who teach Judaism and interpret the Torah to Jewish students in schools are called Scribes. Their explanations and additions were inserted into the Torah published later on. These are the scribes mentioned in the Bible. One of their duties was to get the Jews to follow the Torah.]

"After that, the miracles of Jesus Christ ('alaihi 's-salam) came to and end. When the romans caught and took him before King Herold, the King told him: 'I hear that you perform miracles. Let me see one.' In response, Jesus was silent and looked down because his mission was over; the business given to him by Allahu ta'ala had come to an end. This prophet after assisting others, could, at this point, not help himself; he was sent to save mankind, not to save himself. How much Allahu ta'ala liked his behavior is clearly understood by the fact that He raised Jesus up into heaven.

"The question, 'Do you believe in miracles?' has been repeatedly asked. Yes, it is hard for today's generation to believe in miracles. But, we must not forget that faith cannot be explained completely by logic. Faith is love and it does not always correspond with logic. A bit of divine right should be left for human beings, as well. When we were still children we used to listen to fairy tales with great joy, but as we grew older, how saddened we were to hear that the animals, fairies, magicians and dwarfs were not true. Let us not think about miracles so much. I suppose, even a man who can think quite logically would take great pleasure in thinking that, whether tale or not, he descended from heaven to the earth on the miraculous wings of Christianity."

The Christians who discovered the mistakes and the defects in the Holy Bible neither believe its words nor its miracles. Though they are Christians, some people like the British philosopher david Hume and the priest Rudolf Butman, who understood that the Torah and the Bible in their hands could never be Allah's word, have clearly declared their hatred for Christianity, and this hatred was reasonable. Meanwhile, violating scientific and ethical fundamentals, they also dared to declare their imaginary thoughts on the miracles given in the Qur'an al-karim which is the true word of Allahu ta'ala. The youngsters reading their articles, which are unjust and not based upon any scientific facts, but written on behalf of science, will be misled just like their authors. Serving innocent youngsters in order to save them from this disaster is the first business for those who are conscientious and consider it to be a sacred duty to serve mankind in this world. We, too, with the intention of pleasing Allahu ta'ala, who orders us to be helpful, will quote below the book Mawahib-i Ludinniyye by Ahmad Qastalani (37) (rahmat-Allahu 'alaih), who was a great Islamic scholar.

"A miraculous occurrence, which was a proof manifesting that the Prophets (alaihimussalavatu wattaslimat) were sent by Allahu ta'ala to announce the truth, is called "mujiza." While performing a miracle (mujiza), a prophet must state to the onlookers: 'If you do not believe, you, too, do the same yourself, but you cannot.' A mujiza is something that is contrary to systematic and scientific laws. That is why a scientist cannot perform a mujiza. If a man displays a miraculous feat but does not make a challenge beforehand or does not explain 'You cannot do this,' he should be looked upon as a wali and not as a prophet. A miraculous deed performed by a wali is called "Karama." Similar things done by others are called "Sihr." that is, magic. The things done by magicians can be done by Prophets (alaihimussalavatu wattaslimat / may Allah's peace be upon them), and awliya [plural for wali] (rahima-humullah ta'ala / may Allah's mercy be upon them) too. For example: When Pharaoh's magicians converted ropes into snakes, the rod of the Prophet Moses ('alaihi 's-salam) became a snake itself and swallowed them all. When the magicians saw that their magic had been subverted and realized that they were not able to perform the mujiza (miracle) which they had just witnessed, they all submitted and believed in the prophethood of Hadrat Moses. Although, Pharaoh had threatened them with torture and death, they did not relinquish their belief. The mujizas of the Prophets (alaihimussalawatu wattaslimat) and the karamas of the awliya (rahimahumullahu ta'ala) have all been created by Allahu ta'ala. Though He creates the events which are conformable to scientific laws and natural phenomena, with the effects of some certain reasons, He creates the mujizas without such reasons. Mujiza is also named "burhan" or "ayat." Sihr (magic) changes the physical properties and shapes of matter. It does not change the structure of matter. But, a mujiza and karama can change both of them.

It was cited both in the Old Testament and in the New Testament that the last of the Prophets, Muhammad ('alaihi 's-salam) would come, would appear on the Arabian peninsula with certain qualities and would be accompanied by miraculous occurrences. The revealing of these facts is a great mujiza for both the Prophet Moses and Jesus ('alaihi 's-salam) and also for Muhammad ('alaihi 's-salam). Allahu ta'ala granted each Prophet mujizas similar to the things deemed valuable and meritorious during those times. Allahu ta'ala has not only given Hadrat Muhammad ('alaihi 's-salam) mujizas like the ones which were given to the Prophets before him, but He also granted him other mujizas as well. The fact that Muhammad ('alaihi 's-salam) performed more than three thousand mujizas in his life-time is written in the Turkish book Mirat-i Kainat. Eighty-six of them are written in this book in a separate part entitled "The Mujizas of Muhammad" ('alaihi 's-salam).

Some of the Muslims who are not Ahl as-sunnat, and some scientists who are ignorant of religion, do not believe in either all of the mujizas or some among them. They say that such happenings are not conformable to their scientific knowledge. The disbelievers among them must be taught the religion of Islam so that they can attain the true faith. As for those who are believers, they must believe in the mujizas. They have to because the Holy Qur'an informs us that on the Day of Resurrection, the earth, the heavens, the living and the non-living will change their structures and come apart. Those who believe in these changes which do not conform with scientific knowledge, must also believe in miracles. We do not say: "Prophets ('alaimu 's-salawatu wattaslimat) make mujizas or awliya (Muslim saints) (rahimahumullahu ta'ala) make karamas." If we said so, the disbelievers would have a right to speak. But we say: "Allahu ta'ala creates mujizas through His Prophets (alaihimussalawatu wattaslimat) and karamas through his awliya (rahimahumullah ta'ala)." A reasonable and honest man, who knows biological and astronomical events thoroughly, and who has studied the latest scientific developments, understands immediately that every existence, organic or inorganic, from the atoms to the sun, has been created in a well-balanced manner. He also understands that they all run continuously like the components of a single machine depending on each other. He, therefore, without hesitation believes that one entity, seeing, knowing and having infinitive power, has created them as He desired, and is directing them as He wishes. He welcomes the idea of a great creator creating mujizas and karamas, too. As scientists, we say that mujizas are real and are only done by Allahu ta'ala. He makes them possible through His Prophets (alaihimussalawatu wattaslimat). No prophet can perform mujizas by himself without the permission of Allahu ta'ala. Hadrat Jesus' ('alaihi 's-salam) curing the sick people and revivifying the dead are mujizas created by Allahu ta'ala and are revealed in the Qur'an al-karim. But the Christians, many of whom are completely confused about the correctness of their Bible, believe nothing communicated in it, and as a result have become irreligious.

The unfortunate Christians, how can they be expected to believe in today's Holy Bible? Shall we re-write, in brief, the facts you have already learned about the Bible?

1) There are very few passages in the Holy Bible which can be accepted as the words of Allahu ta'ala.

2) It is understood that some words are not the words of Allahu ta'ala, but of a Prophet, through the fact that those words are written in the Holy Bible with the name of the Prophet who uttered them.

3) Numerous words, said by unknown narrators, were added to the Holy Bible.

4) Many Christian men of religion have confessed that many tales and legends are intermixed with the narrations of the apostles.

5) The history of Hadrat Jesus Christ ('alaihi 's-salam), as given by the apostles, is contradictory.

6) Some Biblical books, such as Barnabas' Book which consisted of true narrations, were destroyed by the Christians.

7) The Holy Bible has already been examined and changed again and again up to now by various religious committees. These examinations are still going on today. According to an estimation, there are four thousand (4,000) Holy Bibles at hand, each one being different from the other. Every examining committee claims that there were serious mistakes in the previous Holy Bibles.

8) Various emperors ordered the revision of the Holy Bible and their orders were fulfilled.

9) The means of expression in the Holy Bible are too undignified to be the expressions of Allah's book. Some sections of the Old Testament are too obscene to be read by children, as you have seen above.

10) The fact that there are fifty thousand (50,000) errors in the Holy Bible has already been written by different European Christian magazines. Today, the Christians do their best to correct the worst one called "The Trinity."

11) Finally, by Christian theologists, too, the Bible is admitted to be the "work of human beings," not the words of Allahu ta'ala.

My dear readers! You have examined today's Holy Bible together with us. As you must admit, we did not support any side in this examination. We narrated only the words of religious men from the Christian world, not Islamic scholars. From time to time, they took out different passages which contradicted each other. Everybody can examine and scrutinize the Bible after buying one. We wrote down the chapters and verses of the subjects we studied, and we examined their accuracy extensively.

Now, how can such a book be compared with the Holy Qur'an (Qur'an al-karim) which is eloquent, dignified, divinely expressed and has never been changed, not even a single letter since the time it was revealed? Surely, all of us have come to this conclusion:

The words of Allahu ta'ala are never changed. And such a book which has defects, fabrications, has been changed from time to time, and was admitted to have been written by mankind by its own theologians cannot be the "book of Allahu ta'ala."

In today's Holy Bible where are such things as advice, guidance, distinguishing good from evil, describing the world and the next world, consolation, etc., which are necessarily expected to be in the book of Allahu ta'ala?

In a copy of the magazine Plain Truth, dated July, 1395 (1975 A.D.), it stated: "We must confess that we cannot present a book which has enough persuasive power to influence the minds of those who are educated, but not Christian. They always cite the different Bibles which contain numerous contradictions and tell us: "You are not able to agree among yourselves. What do you want to enlighten us with?"

A Muslim gentleman having had many experiences with Christian missionaries says:

"In the year 1939, I was in charge of a commercial house called Adams Mission, which was near a Christian Seminary (priest school). I was twenty years old. From time to time, the students attending that school used to come to the place I worked and mock us, and expose to me and my Muslim friends their grudge and hatred towards the religion of Islam, Hadrat Muhammad and the Qur'an al-karim, by using the most vulgar expressions. In their opinion, the Islamic religion was a false religion and the Muslims were the most inferior creatures in the world. Since I was a sensitive man, their attacks caused me much sorrow. I could not sleep at night. I was not able to respond to them. I was not only ignorant of Christianity, but I also had little knowledge about my own religion. Because of this, I decided to study the Holy Bible and the Qur'an al-karim thoroughly to increase my knowledge of Islam and Christianity, and to read the books written about these subjects. As a result, I have been studying for forty (40) years. My greatest source of information on this matter has been the Arabic book Idharul Haq written in Istanbul by Rahmat-Allah Effendi (38), an Indian (Rahime-hullahu ta'ala). At last, after a time, the truth flashed in front of my eyes, like the sun. Henceforth, I could see and understand everything in detail. Subsequently, when those priest candidates re-approached me, they received appropriate answers and left feeling ashamed with their heads down. During the conversation, while I was giving them answers, I did not use vulgar expressions; on the contrary, as Allahu ta'ala ordered us to do, I spoke in a pleasant way, using soft words. I had examined the Holy Bible quite carefully and exposed the defects in it so effectively that they were not able to find any answers to give me. Furthermore, they were puzzled over the fact that I knew the Holy Bible better than they did. Afterwards they began to show great respect for me.

In those days, I found a book prepared by a Protestant missionary priest. The name of that book was How to Make Muslims Christian written by a missionary named Geo G.Harris. That book contains the following advice: 'It is very difficult to make Muslims Christian. Muslims respect their traditions and they are very inflexible. In order to make them Christian, it is necessary to apply these three methods:

1) The Muslims have been taught that the original Holy Bible was changed and corrupted. You should immediately ask them the questions below:

a) Have you got a copy of the real Torah and the Bible in your hand? If you have, please show it to us!

b) What sort of differences are there between today's Torah and Bible and the original ones which you claim to be true? Where are they and how many?

c) Do you think these contradictions were inserted deliberately or are they merely differences of expression?

d) Now, I shall give you a Holy Bible; show me the alterations in it.

e) How would you read this particular verse in its original form?

2) When and by whom were those verses falsified and corrupted?

3) Muslims believe that the Holy Bible we have is either a false book similar to the original one or another book written by human beings. According to the Muslims, the Bible that we have today has no connection with the actual Bible that Hadrat Jesus Christ conveyed. But, they will be confused if they are asked the questions above. Most of the Muslims are ignorant. Their opinion, which is that 'Today's Bible is not the real Bible,' is the understanding they obtained by chance, not only about the Bible, they even lack enough understanding about their own religion. When they are asked a few serious questions, they will be confused, and will not be able to find a convenient answer. Then, tell them, 'Let me give you some information on this matter' and begin to read, with a smiling face, a low voice and soft words, some attractive sections of the Holy Bible, which should be easy for them to understand. You should give them some books or brochures, free of charge, written in a clear language, which is easy to understand about the virtues of Christianity. You should never insist on their being a Christian. You should always leave time for them to think first and then make up their minds. If you act in this manner, surely, you will be able to make them Christian. At least, you will cause them to have suspicion in their brains.' " The same person continues:

"I believe that if the Muslims read my book about Christianity and today's Bible, which is published in English, they will be able to easily answer the questions above by Geo G.Harris, I myself after striving for just twenty years, have uncovered a lot of defects in today's Torah and Bible and have disclosed the fact that it has not been Allah's book. Not only me, but also Christian scientists and theologists themselves have the same conclusion. However, to be able to read the books and articles written by them, it is necessary to know foreign languages. Most of the Muslims do not speak a foreign language and they usually do not have enough money to buy expensive books. For that reason, in order to serve Muslims, I have been publishing my booklets in the languages known by Muslims and have distributed some of them as presents."
That is why we, too, are taking part in this great service of revealing the inner face of Christianity together with some Christian scientists, for the sake of our Muslim brothers.
A missionary says:

"Trying to convert the Muslims into Christians is deemed to be a very good deed by those who are either Protestant or Catholic. They say it is very difficult to make Muslims Christian. First of all, the Muslims respect their traditions immensely. However, missionaries believe the facts below can produce very good results:

1) Muslims are usually poor people. Therefore, if you give them money, presents, some goods, or if you find him a job with a Christian, surely that poor Muslims will be prompted to become a Christian.

2) Most of the Muslims are ignorant in religious and scientific matters. They have knowledge about neither the Holy Bible nor the Qur'an al-karim. They blindly practice the method of worship which was shown to them; hence, they do not understand anything and they do not know what real worshipping is. Since the majority of them do not know the Arabic language, they know nothing about the contents of the Qur'an al-karim, nor of the detailed information in the books of Islamic scholars. They recite some passages which they have memorized without knowing their meanings. As to the Holy Bible, they know nothing about it. Most of the men of religion who leads them are not Islamic scholars. They teach only how to worship. They cannot influence their students. Consequently, the Muslims brought up in this way worship as they were shown, without knowing anything about the fundamentals of their religion. Their faith has nothing to do with understanding the fundamentals of Islam. Their faith is predicated upon a stubbornness about not leaving the things that they have learned from their teachers and parents.

3) Most of the Muslims do not know another language, except their mother tongue. Let alone reading the books which were written for or against Christianity, they do not even know of the existence of such books. You should give them lots of books written in their own language which praises Christianity heavily. While giving these books, be careful that the material is simple and clear enough to be understood by them. Books which consist of complex expressions and philosophy will prove useless. They will not understand these things, and as a result of becoming bored while reading them, they will throw them away. Simple words, simple sentences and simple expressions, which are not boring, are necessary. Do not forget that the men in front of you are very primitive and their brains can only understand very simple concepts.

4) Continuously tell them: Since the Christians and the Muslims believe in Allahu ta'ala their Lord is the same. But, Allahu ta'ala accepts Christianity as the true religion. This has been clearly proven. Consider this: as you see, the richest, the most civilized, the happiest people in the world are the Christians. This is because Allahu ta'ala prefers them over the Muslims who are on the wrong path. While Islamic countries are in poverty and indigence, while they are begging for aid from the Christian countries, and while they are behind in science and technology, Christian countries have reached the highest degrees of civilization and they are continuously progressing everyday. A countless number of Muslims have been rushing to Christian countries in order to find jobs. Christians are superior to Muslims in science and technology, in trade, in industry, in short, in every field. You can see this with your own eyes. All of this indicates that Allahu ta'ala does not consider the Islamic religion a true religion. He wants to show you through this reality that it is an artificial religion. In order to punish those who left Christianity, which is the true religion, Allah will always leave them in a miserable, despicable and ruined condition."

Thus, with these untrue words, missionaries are trying to deceive Muslims in order to convert them to Christianity. Since they have a lot of money, they have been spending it mostly for this purpose. They have been striving to fascinate and corrupt the Muslims by way of establishing institutions, hospitals, free kitchens, schools, gymnasiums, amusement parks, gambling-houses and prostitution houses.

In our time by using sweet and fascinating words, Christians called "Jehovah Witnesses" are trying to deceive Muslim children in order to convert them into Christians. After publishing brochures and booklets, they mail them to addresses taken out of telephone directories. Furthermore, beautiful girls, who are smartly and carefully dressed, are giving those booklets out by going from door to door. It is stated in the latest edition of the Arabic dictionary Al-Munjid, printed in 1908 by the printing house Matba'at-ul-Catholiciyye that was established in Beirut in 1296 (1879): "The new Jehovah Witnesses sect was first introduced in the United States in 1872 by Toharls Roussel. He derived wrong interpretations from the Bible and died in 1334 (1916). Yahwa is a name referring to Allahu ta'ala, which is written in the Torah." Therefore, it is understood through this Christian book that this sect is corrupt and that the word "Jehovah" is an error. Praise be to Allahu ta'ala that the Muslims cannot be deceived by their gilded and dishonest words. On the contrary, such efforts increase the hatred and the suspicion in their hearts. All praise be to Allah, the Most High. The Muslims are not as ignorant as they suppose. Yes, forty or fifty years ago, the number of Muslims who knew one of the European languages, or who graduated from universities was quite small. But, in their place, there were elementary schools and madrasahs in every country, every city and even in every village. In those madrasahs, the astronomical, scientific and mathematical subjects of that time were being taught, as well as religious subjects. The books and curriculums of those madrasahs, left from that time, are the proofs for our explanations. It is necessary for Muslims to be competent in mathematics in order to build mosques and schools, to calculate zakat, to properly distribute inheritances, to keep accounts for companies and foundations. The parents of former times used to compete with each other in order to send their children to these schools. While registering at these madrasahs, magnificent, splendid ceremonies were held and they used to give a feast. Their gilded suits with gold and silver threads, their valuable handbags, ornamented stage coaches, and the reciting of mavlids were the means by which they expressed their esteem for knowledge. The prospects of getting an exemption from military service, or receiving an appointment to a high post for those who graduated from the madrasahs with high grades inspired the youth to rush to school. Even shepherds living in villages had a great deal of knowledge about morals and religion. This fortunate situation went on like this, until the year 1250 (1839 A.D.) when the Ottoman reformation (the law of Tanzimat) was put into effect. It had been prepared by Mustapha Rashid Pasha, who was a freemason and the minister of foreign affairs, to undermine Islam.

Today, the Muslims have hundreds of books which explain the fundamentals of the Islamic religion. What a great blessings for us that it has been an enormous honor to prepare some of these books. Our books, including this one, Islam and Christianity, are written with a simple style. We have tried to use the "sweet tongue," which is an expression used by Westerners for their Christian books. All of our books contain what the greatest scholars from Western and Eastern countries think of Islam and Christianity. We have sent some of our books all over the world after having translated them into European languages. We feel pride when we see that they have had a positive effect, not only in Turkey, but in the rest of the world as well. The letters we have been receiving from all over the world, written to thank and to express appreciation, make us forget the troubles we went through in order to prepare them. We cannot imagine a reward greater than those words written in most of the letters we have received: "By reading your books, I have learned true Islam." Every Muslim who has an opportunity to read these books can easily answer those people who ask him questions about any religion, and they will cause them to admire their knowledge on the subject.

After learning about true Islam, no one can help himself from being attracted to Islam, A Muslim who has already read my books will simply laugh at missionary propaganda. The words they utter about Christianity bringing welfare, wealth, abundance and happiness are not true. Let alone serving to develop, to civilize, and to enrich a country; on the contrary, it has been witnessed that Christianity prevented such developments during the Middle Ages. Fanatical Christians prevented progress; they deemed everything to be a sin, asserting that human beings came to this world only to suffer. They destroyed the works of the Roman and Greek scientists; they demolished the remains of the old civilizations; they darkened and ruined the world. After the appearance of Islam, and its spreading throughout the world, the works of the old civilizations were brought to light. Having been improved upon with the new discoveries developed by the Muslims, the old scientific concepts were taught again. Islamic universities were founded, industry and trade developed, and mankind attained peace and comfort. During the Middle Ages, since knowledge, science and medicine existed only in Islamic countries, Pope Silvester II attended the Andalusian Islamic University. Sancho, who was one of the Kings of Spain, consulted Muslim doctors for the treatment of his illness. The founders of the "Renaissance," which was a brilliant new period, were Muslims. Today, all those Western scientists with integrity have been admitting this reality.

The well-known German philosopher Nietzche best expressed what Christianity brought mankind:

"The wish and the doctrine of the Christians to present the world to people as ugly and bad has really made the world ugly and bad."

As to the second assertion of the missionaries, that is: "Today, Christians are wealthy, but the people of the Muslim countries are poor and miserable." It is true, but there is no connection between this fact and the religion of Islam. Anyone who is reasonable can see that if the Muslims are poor and miserable, their great religion is not at fault. The guilty ones are those who do not know the fundamentals of their religion or who, in spite of their knowledge, do not practice it. The development of the Christian world in science is not due to the Holy Bible, but it is because of their unceasing efforts, their honesty and perseverance. In reality, they have been following the Qur'an al-karim in spite of the fact that they do not believe in it. Since working, being honest, and learning as much as possible are continuously enjoined in our religion, those who do not obey these commands will certainly be punished by Allahu ta'ala. The reason why the Muslim world remained undeveloped is not because they were not Christians; on the contrary, it was because they were not perfect Muslims.

look at the Japanese! Although they are not Christian, as a result of their diligence, industriousness and honesty, they have surpassed the Germans in optics and the Americans in the automobile industry. Japan has surprised the world with its yearly car production of 5.5 million in 1985. Japanese people are living a comfortable life. They are leaders in the electronic industry, too. All of us have Japanese calculating machines in our homes. What do those lying missionaries say about this reality? Is there any connection between Christianity and Japanese bicycles, microscopes, typewriters, telescopes, and cameras all of which are widely used in the world.

We shall discuss this matter again later on, and we shall re-examine the things that devout Muslims must do.

O! Dear readers! You have already seen today's Holy Bible. We have examined this book briefly before your eyes. Surely, you have confidence in our impartiality. Now, it is time to examine the Qur'an al-karim, which is the holy book of Islam. Together, we will examine it impartially in the same way. After we finish this examination, you will see clearly, once again, which book is the word of Allahu ta'ala.

Prophet Muhammad in the Old Testament

Almost all the previous Prophets predicted the Prophet Muhammad, upon him be peace and blessings. Despite the changes they have undergone over time, we can still find indications to his coming in the Torah, Psalms and the Gospels.

A Prophet from among the brothers of the Israelites who resembles Moses

For example, the following verses of the Torah promise the coming of the Prophet Muhammad, upon him be peace and blessings:

The Lord said to me [Moses]: ‘What they say is good. I will raise up for them a Prophet like you among their brothers; I will put My words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him. If anyone does not listen to My words that the Prophet speaks in My Name, I will Myself call him to account.’ (Deuteronomy, 18.17-9)

It is clear from these verses that what is meant by ‘a Prophet like you among their brothers’ is a Prophet who will come from the line of Ishmael, since Ishmael is the brother of Isaac, who is the forefather of Moses’ people, the Children of Israel. The only Prophet who came from the line of Ishmael after Moses and resembled him in many ways, for example, in the bringing of a new law and waging of war on his enemies, is the Prophet Muhammad, upon him be peace and blessings. Also, the following verse of the Bible in Deuteronomy, 34.12 (Istanbul 1885), clearly states that no Prophet like Moses did ever appear among the Israelites:

With respect to his virtues and awesome deeds, no Prophet like Moses, whom the Lord knows face to face, no longer appeared among Israel.

The Quran points to the same fact:

We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness over you, even as We sent to Pharaoh a Messenger. (al-Muzzammil, 73.15)

The sentence, I will put My words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him, in the verse in question, means that the promised Prophet will be unlettered and speak whatever is revealed to him. God reiterates the same fact in the Quran:

He does not speak out of [his own] desire. It is but a Revelation revealed. (al-Najm, 53.3-4)

The Prophet who shone forth from Mount Paran

The following verse,

The Lord came from Sinai and dawned over them from Seir; He shone forth from Mount Paran. (Deuteromony, 33.2)

refers to the Prophethood of Moses, Jesus and Muhammad respectively, upon them be peace. Sinai is the place where the Prophet Moses spoke to God and received the Torah. Seir, a place in Palestine, is where the Prophet Jesus received Divine Revelation. Paran is where God manifested Himself to mankind for the last time through His Revelation to the Prophet Muhammad, upon him be peace and blessings.

Paran is a mountain range in Makka. It is mentioned in the Torah (Genesis, 21.19-21) as the area in the desert where Hagar was left by her husband Abraham, upon him be peace, to live with her son, Ishmael. The well of Zamzam appeared in it. As is stated explicitly in the Qur’an (14.35-7), Abraham left Hagar and Ishmael in the valley of Makka, which was then an uninhabited place within the mountain ranges of Paran.

The verse in Deuteromony, according to the Arabic version published in London in 1944 and the Ottoman Turkish version published in Istanbul in 1885), continues:

He came with myriads of holy ones; in his right hand appeared to them the fire of the Shari‘a.
This verse refers to the promised Prophet, Muhammad, upon him be peace and blessings, who would have numerous Companions of the highest degree of sainthood. The fire of the Shari‘a alludes to the fact that the promised Prophet would be allowed, and even ordered, to fight against his enemies.

Other verses in the Old Testament:

In the Psalms of David, there is the following verse:
O God, send to us after the interregnum (after the latest of the successive prophets) one who will establish (Your) way.’ (1)

Here, ‘one who will establish (Your) way’ refers to the Prophet Muhammad, upon him be peace and blessings.

The following verse is from the Gospels:

A verse from the Torah says:

Surely God said to Abraham: ‘Hagar will certainly bear children. There will appear from her sons one whose hand will be above all, and the hands of all others will be opened to him in reverence.’ (2)

Another verse from the Torah:

And He said, ‘O Moses, surely I will raise up for them a Prophet like you, from among their brothers (that is, from among the children of Ishmael); I will put my Word in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him. If anyone does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name, I Myself will call him to account.’ (Deuteronomy, 18:18-19.)

A third verse from the Torah:

Moses said: ‘O my Lord, I have found in the Torah a community, as the best of the communities, that will be raised for (the benefit) of mankind; they enjoin the good and forbid the evil, and they believe in God. Let it be my community!’ (God) said: ‘That is the community of Muhammad.’ (3)

This is a verse from the Psalms:

O David, a Prophet will come after you, named Ahmad (Muhammad), the Truthful and the Lord, and his community will be forgiven. (4)

From the Seven ‘Abdullahs, ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibn al- ‘As, who made extensive studies of earlier Divine books, ‘Abdullah ibn Salam, who was the first to embrace Islam from amongst the famous Jewish scholars, and the renowned scholar Ka‘b ibn al-Akhbar from amongst the foremost scholars of the Israelites, all pointed out the following verse in the Torah, which was not then corrupted to its present extent. The verse, after addressing Moses, addresses the Prophet to come in the following strain:

O Prophet, verily We have sent you as a witness, a bearer of good tidings, a warner and a protection for the unlettered. You are My slave; I have named you ‘the Reliant on God’, who are not harsh and stern, and not clamorous in the marketplaces; who do not repel the evil with evil, but instead pardon and forgive. God will certainly not take away his life until He straightens a crooked nation by means of him (by causing them) to proclaim ‘There is no deity but God.’ (5)

Another verse from the Torah states:

Muhammad is the Messenger of God; his birthplace is Makka, he will emigrate to Tayba, the center of his rule is Damascus, and his community are unceasingly occupied with praise of God. (6)

In this verse, for the word Muhammad, a Syriac word meaning Muhammad is actually mentioned.

Another verse from the Torah:

You are My slave and Messenger; I have named you ‘the Reliant on God.’ (7)
This verse is also addressed to a Prophet who will emerge after Moses from the progeny of Ishmael, the cousins of the children of Isaac.

Here is another verse from the Torah:

My slave is a ‘chosen one’, who is not harsh, nor he is stern.(8)
The meaning of ‘Mukhtar’, a chosen one, is the same as ‘Mustafa’, a name of Muhammad, upon him be peace and blessings.

The Prophet who will come after Jesus is referred to as ‘the Master of the world’ in several places in the Gospels. (John, 14:30)

This verse of the Gospel, which has come to describe him,

With him is an iron staff with which he will fight, as will his community.(9)

indicates that a Prophet will come with a sword to wage Jihad. In agreement with this verse of the Gospel, the following Qur’anic verse at the end of Sura al-Fath (Victory), which refers to some other verses of the Gospel as well as the one mentioned above, also states that his community, like him, will be under the obligation of waging Jihad.

And their similitude in the Gospel is: like a seed that sends forth its blade, then makes it strong; it then becomes thick, and it stands in its own stem, filling the sowers with wonder and delight, so that it fills the unbelievers with rage at them. (48:29)

In the Torah, there is the following verse:

The flags of the holy ones are with him, on his right. (Deuteronomy, 33:2) (10)

In this verse, the Companions of the Prophet are described as ‘the holy ones’, that is, his Companions are blessed, righteous, saintly friends of God.

In Chapter 42 of the Book of Isaiah, there are the following verses:

Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my spirit on him and he will bring justice to the nations. He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets. A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice; he will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth. In his law the islands will put their hope. (Isaiah, 42:1-4)

These verses are certain to describe the Prophet Muhammad, who would come in the last phase of human history.

There are the following verses in Chapter 4 of the Book of Micah:

In the last days the mountain of the Lord’s temple will be established as chief among the mountains; it will be raised above the hills, and peoples will stream to it. Many nations will come and say, “Come, let us go up the mountain of the Lord, to the house of God. He will teach us His ways, so that we may walk in His paths.” (Micah, 4:1-2)

These verses obviously describe the Mount Arafat, the most blessed mountain of the world, and the nation of Muhammad, upon him be peace, together with the prayers and praises that would be offered by the pilgrims who would flock there from all climes.
The following verses are from Chapter 72 of Psalms:

He will rule from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth.The desert tribes will bow before him and his enemies will lick the dust. The kings of Tarshish and of distant shores will bring tribute to him; the kings of the Yemen and Seba will present him gifts. All kings will bow down to him and all nations will serve him. For he will deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicted who have no-one to help. He will take pity on the weak and the needy and save the needy from death. He will rescue them from oppression and violence for precious is their blood in his sight. Long may he live! May people ever pray for him and bless him all day long.
...
May his name endure for ever; may it continue as long as the sun. All nations will be blessed through him. and they will call him blessed. (Psalms, 72:8-17)

These verses describe the Prophet Muhammad, the Pride of the World, in a very clear way. Since the Prophet David, has a prophet come other than the Prophet Muhammad, upon him be peace, who has spread his religion from east to west, to whose name many rulers pay tribute, and whose way so many obey with deep adoration for him, and on whom one fifth of mankind call, every day, God’s peace and blessings? Is there anyone who fits this description other than the Prophet Muhammad, upon him be peace and blessings?

Prophet Muhammad in the New Testament

More emphatically and more frequently than any other Prophet, the Prophet Jesus, upon him be peace, gave the good tidings of the Last Prophet, upon him be peace and blessings.
The Capstone in the Gospel of Matthew
Jesus said:

Have you never read in the Scriptures: ‘The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes? Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit. He who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces, but he on whom it falls will be crushed.’ (Matthew, 21.42-4)

The ‘capstone’ mentioned in the verses cannot be the Prophet Jesus for the verses refer to the crushing victories that the followers of the ‘capstone’ will win against their enemies. No people were ever broken to pieces or crushed because they resisted Christianity. Christianity gained ground against the Roman Empire only after it had lost its original identity and been reconciled with Roman paganism. The Western dominion over the world came after scientific thought’s triumph over the medieval Christian view of nature and was realized in the form of a ruthless colonialism. Whereas, Islam ruled almost half of the ‘old’ world for many centuries as a religion in its original purity and its enemies were many times defeated before it. In its struggle with other religions, Islam has always been successful. It is, again, Islam which is on the rise as both a pure, authentic religion and as a way of life, and which is the hope of salvation for humanity more than that, the Prophet Jesus himself alludes to this fact by stating explicitly that the kingdom of God will be taken away from his followers and given to a people who will produce its fruit.

Second, in a telling detail recorded in a hadith in the Sahih of al-Bukhari and that of Muslim, the Prophet Muhammad, upon him be peace and blessings, describes himself as the ‘capstone’ completing the building of Prophethood.

Paraklit, the Spirit of Truth

In the Gospel of John, Jesus promises the arrival of the Last Prophet using a variety of names:
But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the ‘Paraklit’ will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment. (John, 16:7-8)

In these verses, the Prophet Muhammad, upon him be peace and blessings, is referred to as the Paraklit. Paraklit11 is a Greek word meaning the Distinguisher between Truth and Falsehood. Although Christian interpreters have given this word different meanings such as Counselor (Gideons International) or Helper (American Bible Society) or Comforter (the Company of the Holy Bible), and claimed that it refers to the Holy Spirit, it is impossible even for Christians to establish whether the Holy Spirit has come down after Jesus and done what Jesus foretold he would do.

If, according to Christians, the Holy Spirit is the Archangel Gabriel, he came many times to the Prophet Muhammad, upon him be peace and blessings, to bring Divine Revelations. Further, Jesus mentioned and predicted the Paraklit with other different names, but the same function, as is seen in the following verses:

When Paraklit comes - the Spirit of truth - who comes from the Father, he will testify about me. (John, 15.26)

I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking what is mine and making it known to you. (John, 16.12-14)

I will not speak with you much longer, for the Prince of this world is coming. And I posses nothing of him. (John, 14.30)

Who has come after Jesus other than the Prophet Muhammad, as the Comforter who has comforted human beings against fear of death, against worries about the future, against spiritual ailments of all kinds? As the Helper, who has helped mankind to attain real peace and happiness in both worlds? As the Prince of the world, who has ruled almost half of the world for fourteen centuries, and who has become the beloved of billions? And as the Spirit of truth who testified to Jesus, brought glory to him by declaring his Prophethood against the denial of the Jews and false deification of him by Christians, and restoring his religion to its pristine purity through the Book he brought? What shortcomings do the Western Christians attribute to the Prophet Muhammad, in contrast to Jesus and other Prophets, that, while almost all of the Christians of the ‘Middle East’ believed in him and converted to Islam within a few decades of his death, they persist in their denial of him and offer no justification?

Mawlana Jalal al-Din al-Rumi, a great Sufi saint, expresses in the following stanza the good tidings of the Prophet Muhammad by the Gospel:

In the Gospel Mustafa is mentioned with his attributes, in him is the mystery of all the Prophets; he is the bringer of happiness. The Gospel mentions him with his external form and features, and also with his personal virtues and Prophetic qualities.

In spite of the changes they have been subjected to over time, the Old and New Testaments still contain references to the Prophet Muhammad, only some of which we have quoted. The late Hussayn Jisri found one hundred and fourteen such allusions and quoted them in his Risala al-Hamidiya.

In the books of other Prophets, God’s Messenger, upon him be peace and blessings, is mentioned with such Syriac and Hebrew names as correspond to Ahmad, Muhammad and Mukhtar. In the Pages of the Prophet Shu‘ayb, upon him be peace, his name is Mushaffah, meaning Muhammad. In the Torah, he is mentioned as Munhamanna, which means Muhammad, and as Himyata, meaning ‘the Prophet of al-Haram’. In the Psalms, he is named al-Mukhtar, and again in the Torah, al-Hatam al-Khatam. Both in the Torah and the Psalms, he is referred to as Muqim al-Sunna, which means the one who establishes and enforces the Divine way for mankind. In the Pages of Abraham, upon him be peace, and in the Torah, he is mentioned as Mazmaz, and again in the Torah, as Ahyad.

God’s Messenger himself said, My name in the Qur’an is Muhammad, in the Bible Ahmad, and in the Torah Ahyad. In the Bible, he is also referred to as ‘the Possessor of the Sword and the Staff’. In-deed, among the Prophets who carried the sword, the Prophet Muhammad, upon him be peace and blessings, is the greatest one, who was also commanded to perform Jihad together with his community. The Gospel refers to him also as the one who wears a crown. What is meant here by crown is turban, and it is the Arabs who have worn headcovers with a wrapper around them since ancient times. Hence, the reference is undoubtedly to the Prophet Muhammad, upon him be peace and blessings.

In the tomb of Shamun al-Safa, the famous traveler Awliya’ Calabi saw the following verses in the Gospel, written on a gazelle hide: ‘I’tun (A youth) Azribun (from the progeny of Abraham) peruftun (is to be a Prophet.) Law ghıslin (He will not be a liar.) Bent afzulat (His birthplace is Makka;) ki kalushir (he will come with righteousness;) tunuminin (his blessed name) mavamid (is Ahmad Muhammad.) Isfedus (His followers) takardis (will prosper in this world,) bist bith (and also in the next.)

Certainly, Jesus frequently gave in the Gospels the glad tidings that the most significant leader of mankind would come, and mentioned him with some names in Syriac and Hebrew, which mean, as observed by meticulous experts, Ahmad, Muhammad, and Faruq (who distinguishes the truth from falsehood).

However, Abidin Pasha, a nineteenth-century scholar from Yanya, Greece, who knew Greek very well and whose works on Greek literature were highly praised by Greek authorities, writes that the origin of Paraclete is piriklitos, meaning Ahmad, the one who is much praised. (Hussain Jisri, Risala al-Hamidiya, 59). We also read in the Qur’an that Jesus predicted the Prophet Muhammad with the name, Ahmad, a synonym of Muhammad (61:6). Christians assert that by Paraclete Jesus means the Holy Spirit, but it is questionable what connection the Holy Spirit has with interceding, pleading or advocating, which, in fact, refer to the main attributes of the Prophet Mu-hammad, upon him be peace and blessings, even though we accept that the word drives from paracletos. Besides, it should also be noted that translators of the Gospels intentionally refrain from writing Paraclete and, instead, they prefer to translate it, but all differently. Also, Jesus gives good tidings of the being to come not only with the name of Paraclete but also with such names as ‘the Prince of this world’ and the ‘Spirit of truth’, and with many other functions, which must, of course, belong to a Prophet, not to a ‘spirit’ or angel.

Who Wrote the Holy Qur'an?

Quran, in Arabic, could only have been written by ONE of 3 possible sources:

1. the Arabs

2. Mohammad (peace be upon him)

3. God (Allah)

(NOTE: The first part is not meant to be a rigorous proof. It is something to ponder upon. However, the second part, about Mohammad [pbuh] wrote it' contains more extensive proof.)

Besides the above mentioned sources, Quran couldn't possibly have been written by ANYONE else.

No other source is possible, because Quran is written in pure, rich, and poetic Arabic, which was not known to anyone other than the above mentioned sources, at that time. The Arabic language was at its peak in expression, richness, vocabulary, artistic, and poetic value during the time the Quran was being revealed. Anyone speaking the classical Arabic ( the Arabic of Quran at the time it was revealed) would argue that a non-Arab entity couldn't possibly have written such an extensive and brilliant piece of literature in the Arabic language. Quran could only have been written by an Arabic speaking entity. An entity, who's knowledge, style, vocabulary, grammar, and way of expression was so powerful that it impacted the entire Arabian peninsula, the east, the west, and continues to impact people all over the globe today!

At no other time, in the history of Arabic language, had it ever achieved its peak in expression, literature, and development, than the time of Arabia during the 6th Century, the time when Quran was being revealed. At no other time in the history of Arabic language had the language ever achieved its highest potential than the time of Arabia during the 6th Century, the time when Quran was being revealed. The language reached its peak in richness, artistic value, and poetry, during that time. With the Arabic language at its peak, and the best of Arabic writers, poets present in Arabia, it is impossible that a non-Arabic speaking entity would write a book like Quran and have such a dynamite impact on the Arabs!

So only an Arabic speaking entity could have write Quran. With that in mind, we're left with three choies:

1 - the Arabs wrote it

2 - Mohammad (pbuh) wrote it

3 - Allah (swt) wrote it

Lets examine the three choces one by one.

(1) Arabs Wrote it?

What Quran teaches goes DIRECTLY against the pagan Arab culture, religion, and gods, that existed before the Quran was revealed. Quran condemns idol worshipping, but the Arabs, loved their idol gods, and worshipped them regularly. Quran raised the status of women; the Arabs treated women next to animals. The Arabs would never write something that goes against their most important belief of idol worshipping. Quran goes against most of the social habbits (such as backbiting, slandering, name calling, etc) which the Arabs were heavily indulged into. For example, the Arabs would call insulting nicknames such as Abu Jahal (the father of ignorance). Quran condemns and prohibits taking interest on money, whereas, the Arabs freely levied heavy interest rates in loans and businesses. Quran condemns and prohibits Alcohol drinking, whereas, the Arabs consumed alcohol freely. The Quran condemns and prohibits gambling, whereas, the Arabs were some of the worst gamblers. The Arabs would never write something so comprehensively against just about all of their customs and culture and religious beliefs, as the Quran is.

During the time of the Holy Prophet (pbuh), the Arabs would indulge in all the social habbits that the Quran condemns and prohibits. How can Arabs then write something that would negate their entire society's norms and ideologies?

Did a group of Arabs or an individual Arab write Quran? Perhaps a rebel Arab beduoin, or a society's misfit, or someone with different ideals and norms decided one day to write Quran? The answer to those questions are also 'no'. Because, if we read Quran, we notice that there is no author! No individual has his/her name written on the cover of Quran! Anytime an individual writes a book, he/she writes his/her name on the cover. The author's name always appears on his/her book, and there is always an author who is credited for writing that book. No one in the history of the world has EVER claimed to have written the Quran, nor anyone's name ever appeared in front of the Quran as bein the 'author'. This is the only book in the world without an author. No one in the world has ever been accused of writing the Holy Quran, except the Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him), by non-muslims.

Quran has no author, and no group or individual in Arabia ever claimed to have written it, nor any group or an indvidual recited, taught, and explained Quran except the Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) and his followers. The Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) was the only Arabian who first practiced, explained, and preached Quran, and ended up making a lot of Arab tribes enemies. Any historian, Muslim or non-Muslim would argue that the only possible source of Quran can be the Prophet Mohammad (pbuh), the man responsible to recite it, teach it, and expalin it to the people of Arabia. In fact, many historians today still think that only Mohammad (pbuh) could possibly have written it.

This leads one to conclude that the Prophet (pbuh) must have written it!

(2) Mohammad (pbuh) wrote it?

First, he was illiterate !! How can an illiterate person come up with such a rich, poetic, intellectual, and inspiring text that it rocked the entire Arabia?

Mohammad (pbuh) never went to school! No one taught him. He had no teacher of any kind in any subjects. How can he have the knowledge of all the science, astronomy, oceanography, etc that is contained in the Quran? (For example, the mention of ocean currents, stars, earth, moon, sun and their fixed paths in Soorah Rahman; and many other scientific statements that are found in Quran, that I cannot state in this short article)

When Quran was revealed, the Arabic language was at its peak in richness, poetic value, literature, etc. Quran came and challenged the best literature in Arabic, the best poetry in Arabic of the time. Mohammad (pbuh) being illiterate couldnt possibly have come up with something so immaculate that it even exceded the best of poetry, and literature in Arabic at the time of the language's PEAK development. Arabic language had never been so rich in expression, poetic value, vocabulary, and variety in literature, as it was in the time of Quran. At a time like this, Quran came and exceeded the best of Arabic in all aspects of the language: poetry, literature, expression, etc. Any classical Arabic speaker would appreciate the unbeatten, unchallenged, and unmatched beauty of the language of Quran.

An illiterate man is simply not capable of writing such a book.

Mohammad (pbuh) had no reason to come up with something like Quran, and cause the entire society of Arabia to become his enemy. Why would he do something like that? Why would he write something going against almost all of the norms of the society, and lose his family, relatives, friends, and other loved ones, and not to mention all the wealth he lost

Quran was revealed over a period of 23 years! A very long time! Is it possible for someone to maintain the same exact style of Arabic speech , as demonstrated in Quran, for over 23 years?

Also, what the prophet Mohammad (saaw) used to say is recorded in what we call his hadeeth (sunnah). If we look at the Arabic style of the hadeeth, and compare it with the style of Quran, we can clearly see that they are clearly DIFFERENT, and DISTINGUISHABLE Arabic styles. The prophet (saaw) spoke in public. It does not make sense that a man has two UNIQUE, Distinguishable, and completely different styles of speech in public. Yet another reason why Mohammad (saaw) couldn't possibly have written Quran.

Quran was revealed over a period of 23 years ! A very long time! Is it possible for someone to maintain the same exact style of Arabic speech , as demonstrated in Quran over 23 years?

Here's what our famous Muslim Scholar, Ahmad Deedat said:

WAS QURAN WRITTEN OR INSPIRED?

"Behold! The angels said: "O Mary! God has chosen you and purified you - Chosen you above the women of all nations." Qur'an-3:42

THE SOURCE OF HIS MESSAGE

"Chosen you above the women of all nations." Such an honour is not to be found given to Mary even in the Christian Bible!

Knowing full-well, and believing as we do, that the whole Quran is the veritable Word of God, we will nevertheless agree, for the sake of argument, with the enemies of Muhammed (pbuh) for a moment, that he wrote it. We can now expect some cooperation from the unbeliever.

Ask him, "Have you any qualms in agreeing that Muhammed (pbuh) was an Arab?" Only an opinionated fool will hesitate to agree. In that case there is no sense in pursuing any discussion. Cut short the talk. Close the book!

With the man of reason, we proceed. "That this Arab, in the first instance, was addressing other Arabs. He was not talking to Indian Muslims, Chinese Muslims, or Nigerian Muslims. He was addressing his own people - the Arabs. Whether they agreed with him or not, he told them in the most sublime form - words that were seared into the hearts and minds of his listeners that Mary the mother of Jesus -A JEWESS- was chosen above the women of all nations. Not his own mother, nor his wife nor his daughter, nor any other Arab woman, but a Jewess! Can one explain this? Because to everyone his own mother or wife, or daughter would come before other women.

Why would the Prophet of Islam honour a woman from his opposition! and a Jewess at that! belonging to a race which had been looking down upon his people for three thousand years? Just as they still look down upon their Arab brethren today.

SARAH AND HAGAR

The Jews get their cock-eyed racism from their Holy Bible, where they are told their father, Abraham, had two wives -Sarah and Hagar. They say that they are the children of Abraham through Sarah, his legitimate wife; that their Arab brethren have descended through Hagar, a "bondwoman", and that as such, the Arabs are inferior breed.

Will anyone please explain the anomaly as to why Muhammed (pbuh) (if he is the author) chose this Jewess for such honour? The answer is simple - HE HAD NO CHOICE - he had no right to speak of his own desire. "IT IS NO LESS THAN AN INSPIRATION SENT DOWN TO HIM." (Qur'an, 53:4).

SURA MARYAM

There is a Chapter in the Holy Quran, named Sura Maryam "Chapter Mary" (XIX) named in honour of Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ (pbuh); again, such an honour is not to be found given to Mary in the Christian Bible. Out of the 66 books of the Protestants and 73 of the Roman Catholics, not one is named after Mary or her son. You will find books named after Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Peter, Paul and two score more obscure names, but not a single one is that of Jesus or Mary!

If Muhammed (pbuh) was the author of the Holy Quran, then he would not have failed to include in it with MARYAM, the mother of Jesus, his own mother - AMINA, his dear wife - KHADIJA, or his beloved daughter - FATIMA. But No! No! this can never be. The Quran is not his handiwork!

I was reading about the charge that the prophet, Mohammed (pbuh), has written the Quran himself. Before you go any further in reading this post, please ask yourself whether you are a honest truth seeker or just another argumentative person, if the former, continue, otherwise, save your time and jump to the next post.

Islam is based on faith that is supported by a number of strong miracles such as knowing what events to take place ahead of time or coming up with supernatural deeds in front of people. The holy Quran has these signs and much more. First, The holy Quran predicted many events to take place ahead of the time of the revelation of that verse; for example, predicting the destruction of Persian empire at a time where the later had a monumental victory over Rome. If the prophet, as some people claim, has written the Quran, then he would have put his future in real jeopardy (50% chance) since neither satellite photos nor on-ground intelligence personnel were available to him at the revelation time. Further, numerous details about many natural phenomena were detailed in the Quran and, until recently, they were proven by experts to be amazingly accurate. For example of the physical development of the fetus inside the womb along with timing given by many verses matches exactly what leading authorities in Embryology are claiming to be recent discoveries. Moreover, verses that gives descriptions about the creation of the universe and the function of mountains in balancing earth and many other descriptions/explanations are available to be read and to be understood. If the prophet was the author, wouldn't he be prone to make weak inferences similar to those who claim that earth is square and whoever says otherwise should be killed?

The prophet also has demonstrated many supernatural miracles not by his own power, but by the power of the creator. He went to Jerasalem back in one night and gave a detailed description of the carnival that was traveling on that route and also specific accedint happend to them at that noght (in those days, it takes a month or so for a round-trip). In another ocasion, he provided water for an entire army from a small plate between his hands. There are many other miracles that require serious truth seeker to read about and to think about it.

From the above, it reasonable to conclude that the Quran is not the PROPHET CREATION. HE HAD NO WAY TO PREDICT ALL THESE EVENTS AND TO BE RIGHT ALL THE TIME, ESPECIALLY WHEN KNOWING THAT THE PROPHET HIMSELFE WAS ILLITERATE!

He is *the* authority on embryology. I strongly recommend the latest edition of the latter book as it mentions how accurately the Qur'an describes embryo development.

Prof. Moore has said: "It has been a great pleasure for me to help clarify statements in the Qur'an about human development. It is clear to me that these statements must have come to Muhammed from God or Allah because almost all of this knowledge was not discovered until many centuries later. This proves to me that Mohammed must have been a messenger of God or Allah."

He says: "The Qur'an describes not only the development of external form but emphasizes also the internal stages -- the stages inside the embryo of its creation and development, emphasizing major events recognized by contemporary science.... If I were to transpose myself into that era, knowing what I know today and describing things, I could not describe the things that were described. I see no evidence to refute the concept that this individual Mohammed had to be developing this information from some place, so I see nothing in conflict with the concept that Divine Intervention was involved..."

QURAN: Chapter 4, Verse 82: "Do they not consider (ponder) on the Quran? If it had been from anyone except Allah, they would surely have found in it much discrepency (contradictions)."

Still unsure or doubtful? Quran is the word of Allah. Allah challenges to His creations:

Chapter 2, Verses 23 & 24: "And if you are in doubt as to what We have revealed to our servant, Then produce a Chapter like thereunto; And call your witnesses or helpers besides Allah, If you are true. But if you cannot, and surely you cannot, Then fear the fire Whose fuel is men and stones, Which is prepared for those who reject."
