Happy World Kindness Day!

Were you grumpy last Monday when you walked into work? Were you pissed at all the traffic you had to deal with when you were coming home from work? I'm gonna take a wild guess and say most of you dealt with at least one.

You know what can make people happy? Kindness. A simple gesture of being nice can change someone's frown into a smile. A stranger holding the door for you while you enter Starbucks, someone giving up their seat to you on the train because they can feel the exhaustion coming off of you, someone paying that extra ten cents that your cup of coffee costs because you didn't have enough. Hell....even just a simple hello or a smile from someone can brighten up your day.

I know this all sounds nice if it's being done to you, but how about doing it for someone else? Be nice on World Kindness Day. Give your neighbor a smile in the morning. Let someone go ahead of you in line just because. It's always nice to be nice. And it doesn't just have to be on the designated day. But start then and you might just make a habit of sending out positive vibes to the people around you.

What I'm Reading: Hamlet.

Lately I've been watching a lot of television and movies. I told myself I would finish watching the second season of The Man In The High Castle, and then read something. I've done that (damnit it was hard to stop watching that show, it's so good). So my pick was to read Hamlet.

I've been wanting to read Shakespeare for a while, I just couldn't figure out which one of his works it'd be. I went into a thrift shop and picked up a few books (I paid about $3 and walked out with five books, fuckyeah thrifting). Hamlet was amongst them, and it just so happened to be one where it had the "easier" translation right next to the original words. I'm about halfway done with it, and I'm so glad the translation is there. I'd pretty good at understanding Shakespearian writing, but it just helps you get through the book quicker with the modern translations. I still peak over at the original text just to be able to see what means what in the world of Shakespeare.

Bath And Body Works Body Mist in Dark Kiss
My favorite Bath And Works scent ever. Unfortunately it's discounted, so I can only get it online. I have backups of this already, and always try to stock up when there's a sale of the Bath and Body Works website.

Kiss Brush On Nail Glue
Since I've started doing my own nails at home, this has been one of my staples. I've purchased this many times (probably over ten), and it's wonderful. The glue stays on for at least two weeks, but never damages my skin. And I prefer its brush tip as opposed to the regular drippy droppy (yes, I called it that for lack of a better word) application because it gives you more control over where your glue goes and how much you use.

Lush First Snow Sparkling Dusting Powder
TMI: I'm a very sweaty person. I've noticed this powder helps battle that. I know you could use regular baby powder, but this has glitter in it so it adds some extra umph to everything. Gives you a little secret pretty perk that no one else might see, but glitter makes everything better so yay.

Maybelline Curvitude Liquid Liner
I've come to love felt tip eyeliners. Surprisingly more than regular pencil, gel, or cream ones. It's just easier for me to put on. My mom randomly got this for me because of a BOGO sale, and I love trying to (drugstore) makeup. I've been using it for months and love it. Doesn't dry out in like two days, and somehow the angled packaging does help with application.

Lush Grease Lightning Tea Tree Cleanser
I have a million bottles of this all over my house. I used it for irritations such as bug bites, cuts, scratches, and just other irritations. I have literally had cuts one day, used this, and the cut has healed two days later. I love it. It's expensive for such a small bottle in my eyes, but it's eventually worth it because a little goes a long way so I don't run out of the stuff so quickly.

Revlon Photoready Perfecting Primer
I've had this for a while now. I always have a love/hate relationship with primers (and setting sprays, for that matter). This one is another one of the silcone feeling ones. Again, I've not really noticed much of a change. Maybe my makeup has lasted an hour or two longer, but I honestly don't see much of a difference. That could just be me though.

Soap And Glory Sugar Crush Body Spray
I've grown to love Soap And Glory. Many of their products are really good, and they're at my local drugstore so they're super accessible. This spray comes in different scents, and this just so happens to be the wrong scent I used (my mom got it for me, but I still used it cause it smells good). It does have a kiwi/sugar scent to it. I love that it very light, but that could be a problem for you guys that like your perfume to stay stuck on you forever. Either way, I'm going to continue using this cause it's awesome.

5 Ways To Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone.

Like many of us, it is hard as hell to do things you’re not used to or that aren’t “comfortable” for you. Here are a few ways I’ve learned to get out of my comfort zone.

Knowing That It's A Goal You Can't Get Out Of
Obligation can be a good and bad thing. Here, I’m gonna ask you to take it as a good thing. A project at work that involves something you’re not too familiar with? Research it, educate yourself on it, and just find out stuff about it. Whether the thing is your personal cup of tea or not, you’ll go into that project with more confidence than you did beforehand. And I find confidence is one of the key things to getting yourself out of your comfort zone.

Having Someone To Do The Activity With You
Accountability is another great thing that’ll get you doing new and exciting things. If you have a good friend that wants to try something you might consider wacky, think about doing it with them. If it’s a close friend you most likely already want to spend time with them. But tell them you’ll go with them on this new adventure - that’s already putting it out into the universe (and in your friends exceptions) that you’ll do it.

Accepting It As A Fear, But Getting Over It
Every human has a fear. Heights, small spaces, large groups of people, in my case…spiders, etc. Some of these are deep rooted and you can’t just do without proper therapy and things, but some stuff you can just go for. I believe I might be afraid of heights as well - but I’ve never been on a proper roller coaster or even a plane to really come to this conclusion (I’ve been taking elevated trains here in NYC since I was about fourteen years old, and sometimes that scares me). However, I kind of want to go zip-lining. And eventually even skydiving if I’m okay with the zip-lining. I’m not about to hold a wolf spider in my hand anytime, but I would like to try out the zip-lining thing.

Focusing On The Positive Aspects More Than The Negatives
This one in particular is hard for me. As a self proclaimed cynic, it is very hard for me to look at the positive side of things more than the negative. But let’s say I was a little more rational than I really am…I’d weigh out the pros and cons of the situation, and see which wins. If it’s clearly the pros, then I have to tell myself that it’s worth it and I will gain something from doing it, rather than lose something. Sometimes you do have to put on a happy face and have fun where there is fun to be had.

Just Do It
Sometimes you really just gotta say to yourself “Fuck it, I’m doing it”. This may take a lot courage and nerve, but if you have that, then run with it. We only live once, so let’s do some weird shit that we never thought we’d do in our lives, Who knows, it might be fucking awesome.

NYX Liquid Suede In Subversive Socialite.

I love purple. Favorite color of all time. My motto is "if it comes in purple, I'm getting purple". I've already used a few shades of NYX's Liquid Suede lipsticks (check them out here and here), so I already knew I'd love the formula. I just saw this and knew I had to have it.

Subversive Socialite is a nice deep maroon color. It leans much more purple than red, which I like. I already have more red purples so I wanted to branch out. Take a look at the color on me here.

Like many deep purples, this does suffer from the patchy streaking thing. But you can get past that if you line and fill your lips with a similar tone of purple (I usually use MAC's Nightmoth). It dries down to a nice matte texture. The wear time is amazing, and it takes a really long time for it to start crumpling around your inner lip. Going into it knowing that, this purple is for you if you love deep tones.

I haven’t blogged in forever. It’s mainly due to me focusing way more on my health and well being. I’ve worked hard on that over the last few months and I am extremely proud of how far I’ve come. I wouldn’t change that for a damn thing. I still love doing what this blog was created in part by - my love of writing, but I’ve learned a little more about my writing as well through all this.

I have multiple posts lined up for the next few weeks and you’ll be able to feast on your eyes on them. I’ve sort of changed the main focus of Strange And Pretty though. I started off as beauty, skincare, fashion, etc. Now I’ll still have those types of posts, but there will also be a lot of lifestyle ones on here. Fitness, blogging tips, mental health care, and just things related to your overall well being.

My iPhone 8+ Case Collection.

It's no secret that I'm Team Apple. I've been an Apple sheep for over a decade. I currently have the iPhone 8+ in silver with 64GB. I love my freakin phone. It's just so...pretty. But I do like to dress it up every now and again. Here are all the cases I have for my electronic baby.

From looking at these pictures, you can tell a few things: I love unicorns and purple. Like...to death. I am a grown ass adult that like unicorns. I'm not ashamed.

I've purchased most of these cases from Amazon. You can check out one of the unicorn cases here - the larger more obnoxious one doesn't seem to be available anymore.

I'm a big fan of Spigen cases. I buy at least one for every phone I have. The two black ones can be found here and here. If you're looking for a case that you can run out of the house with your keys, cards, and phone, I recommend the wristlet case.

I got this wonderful set of ten clear bumpered cases for a mere $14. I like these cause they're versatile and fun to switch out the colors whenever you feel like it.

You can also see that I'm a big fan of Pop Sockets. I'm terrified of dropping my phone (some cases can be so damn slippery), so these work wonders for me. My fave is the anatomically correct heart one on my clear black bumper case. It looks so cool.

My mom says I don't need anymore phone cases. She's probably right. Since most likely I'm going to snatch up one of the new iPhones come September. With that ten pack, I should be good. But I just love pretty cases.

Prada Candy Perfume
This is one of my favorite scents of all time. I'm pretty sure this is my third or fifth bottle of this stuff. The scent is soft, musky, and elegant. Not too sweet or tweenish, but just right. And it stays on you all day.

DKNY Red
This perfume brings back memories of my early twenties. I've loved it ever since. A beautiful and soft red apple scent, it's one of my favorite DKNY fragrances. I'm pretty sure it's discontinued, which sucks. It seems like all my favorite scents are being taken off the market. Wah.

So many perfumes in this one. I love the fact that Soap & Glory came to America. This is a "barely there" mist that just gives you a hint of fresh scent.

I have a very sensitive scalp, so I can't use just any old shampoo (or conditioner). Aussie is a-okay with my fussy dandruff and leaves my hair moisturized and spelling delicious.

Love how soft and rosy this smells. It's also great for right now, being that it's a million degrees outside it's light weight and doesn't make you feel greasy.

Been using this for years, and I will never stop. It's such an awesome multi-use product. I use it mostly for my lips, but if I get a cut or burn, it's great with the healing process.

Clean And Clear Morning Burst Facial Wash
I'm not too picky about my facial wash. As long as it doesn't irritate me, it's okay in my book. As far as the "energy boosting" this wash claims, I haven't felt much of that. But then again, I'm gonna hate getting up in the morning no matter what's bursting onto my face (gigiddy).

We should all know by now that I'm obsessed with wearing anything black. Unfortunately though, most of the black polishes that I was using had gotten old and goopy. In comes Essie's Haute Tub. This kinda-sorta black is deceiving though. In the bottle it looks like you're going to get pink, green, and silver color shifting glitters. But once you brush it on a nail, it mainly just black. The glitter is barely visible. This is somewhat disappointing, because the color from the bottle looks really unique and I was excited for it. But I can never have too many black nail polishes, so I got over that quickly.

I’m about to be thirty years old. Yes, I said it. And I’m not ashamed, cause I still look damn good. But throughout all the years of me being on earth, I’ve learned some stuff. Here’s 29 things I’ve learned by 29.

Many things in this world are beyond my control.
I am very self aware.
Being in therapy does not make you week...it shows your strength and willingness to be vulnerable.
More people SHOULD be seeing therapists - they could use the help.
You can only change someone if they're willing to change.
I am worth way more than I give myself credit for sometimes.
You should care what people have to say about you - (some) critisim can lead to growth and change.
Not everyone is worth space, time, and energy in my life.
Change can happen at any point of your life, as long as you're willing to make the change,.
I am way too critical of myself.
I need to work on myself before I decide to find a significant other - I want know to me before I bring someone into the chaos that is Monica.
I strive the most when it comes to structure, but don't get on well with things that are loosely planned and all over the place.
I hold serious grudges. I do not forgive, and I damn sure don't forget.
I am not broken - I'm a work in progress.
Animals are better than humans. End of story.
Do not let other people bring to down into their river of misery. You already have hardships in this world, there's no need to bring in other people's nonsense into your universe.
Change can be good. Don't let it scare you.
It's nice to be nice.
Ignoring someone who is clearly your enemy can upset them 1000% more than engaging in an argument with them.

I do not want to take pills for the rest of my life. I'm really trying to find alternative (and safe) ways to cope with my problems.
Pete Wentz has bipolar disorder, and attempted suicide a few years back. Did not find that out til recently. See? Your idols are human and they go through human things. I'm glad you're still with us Mr. Wentz.
I fucking love concerts.
I want to make my body healthy and ready for when I get older. I should start now and clean up my diet/lifestyle.
If I can live through this, I can do anything.

Monica Lives: Panic! At The Disco's Pray For The Wicked Concert.

Last year I got into going to more concerts and events and things (I went to see Kinky Boots in the summer). This year I've planned to do the same.

I just got back from seeing Panic! At The Disco for the second time. They kicked off their Pray For The Wicked tour a few weeks ago, and I've been excited as hell for the concert.

We got better seats this time around, because you know...why the fuck not. So close that the fire special effects I actually felt from my seat. If I was hot, I can't imagine how the band felt with that shit on stage, haha.

The album is amazing (you can purchase it here), and the concert was amazing. I'm debating whether or not I want to go again when they come to Brooklyn in January. Idk, I have time to figure it out.

So I let you guys know that I've started doing my own fake nails at home a few posts ago. After doing many nail sets on my own, I've gotten a little better at doing them. Cuticle care seems to be very important, as the nail sits much better when the cuticle has been pushed back. Here I'm wearing China Glaze's "Agro" (from the Hunger Games collection that came out a few years ago), with Pop Beauty's "Twinkle" on my ring finger.

I like this set better than my last because I actually took more time to do it, which is why it looks a tad more natural. I'm loving doing my own fake nails because there's no nail salon visit every two weeks or waiting in queue AT the actual nail salon. Plus it's way more cost friendly. You get tons of nails for such a decent price, so you can change sets whenever you feel like it.

Come May, I usually write a little ditty about my mental health or addictions or whatever else helps get mental health awareness out there. Here's a list of "mind fights" many people go through on a regular basis, and tips on how to handle them.

Understand Some Things Are Beyond Your Control
So many of us wish we can plan and analyze everything in our lives to make sure nothing goes awry. But the reality is, not everything is in your hands. And it shouldn't be, it'd probably be way too much for one human to handle. There are things that will happen to us that just suck, and there's nothing we can do about it. What we can do, however, is let these things happen and come out the other end having learned and experienced something. It helps us prepare for it and deal with it better if it ever happens again.

When Life Gives You Lemons, Garnish A Cocktail With Them
Life throws us curveballs all the time. They may hit us hard. But if we try hard enough, we can make something positive out of the negatives we receive. It may take a while to realize that it's even possible to make something good out of a shitty situation, but once you do, you're golden.

You Think You Need To Be Fixed. You Are Not Broken - You Just Need To Be Worked On
I had a session with my therapist a bit ago and I said something about fixing myself. Her response was "I want you to remember that you are not broken". This really struck me as some serious shit. I'm NOT broken. None of us are. We may have problems, but problems can be fixed. In response to her comment, I said "You're absolutely right. I'm like a painting that an artist can't get quite right, but over time and working on the painting, it'll come out beautiful". This is now how I'm going to look at myself - a project that needs some work.

Remember The Positives
As I mentioned earlier, we have to deal with a lot of negativity in our lives. But you know what us humans have a tendency to do? Only focus on that negativity. We sometimes forget that there are great things going on in our lives that we can look to and make us happy. You know what one of my positives is? I woke up today. Another one - I have people who love and support me while I go through the struggles I'm going through right now. Those may not be your particular positives, but you have some in there. Dig 'em out and let them brighten up your day a little bit.

You Are Amazing
You are. We all are. And we need to remind ourselves of that every single damn day. If we weren't awesome, we wouldn't have made it this far. No matter what things have happened to you, are happening to you, and will happen to you - remember that you are an amazing person and can get through anything.

DIY At-Home Nails.

So lately I've been into wearing longer nails. My natural nails grow, but they grow so wonky and uneven that I end up clipping them/filing them down to nothing. I considered going to the nail salon to get a set of acrylics, but that wouldn't be monetarily worth it for me because I barely go anywhere. That and I hate when my nails grow and you can see your cuticle after like a week.

So I thought that I might get some cheap nails off of Amazon and see what I could do. After many YouTube tutorials, I tried my first set. They weren't horrible. The set pictured here is my second try at a full set. Since that set, I've done more and more sets and I've gotten much better.

I've gone a while without wearing a lot of makeup when I leave the house. I've recently started to get back into the habit. It's nice to go out and look pretty, even if you're not doing something super social or important. And yay for a red lip.

The. Fucking. Office. I've always heard about how good this show was. And saw tons of hilarious memes taken from it. I've finally gotten into it and it's so goddamn funny I can't even. I love that I'm only on season three and have a ton of episodes left to watch. Once I finish the American version, I'm going to get into the UK one.

Starbucks is life dude. My best friend and I used to have coffee dates every week. But because of busy schedules we kind of stopped. We realized how much we missed them so we make it a point to have our Starbucks once a week.

2017 has been a crazy year. For myself, and pretty much everyone else on the damn planet. I've gone through a lot of tough times, and a lot of good times. But 'tis is life.

I've never been one to set New Year's resolutions. They're so cliche and no one ever really sticks to them. And to me, they set up false hope for things that you just may not achieve in that year.

I will, however, set new and better paths for myself. I do have goals in mind that I would like to accomplish. Will I get them all done in 2018? Who knows. But I know I have the power to do them in however much time it takes.

Some of my goals involve my blog, many involve major changes I need to make in my personal life. And some are just bucket list types of things that I'd like to do before I die.

Here are a few of my blog goals:

Get more engagement (specifically in the comments)
Reach 1000 followers on Twitter
Reach 1000 followers on Instagram
Work with more brands
Learn more about SEO (!!!)
Host a giveaway

I know those seem like simple things that many of you have already surpassed 10x over. But everyone takes their own time to do things, so I'll try not to compare myself to others.

I'm hoping things will be okay this upcoming year. For me, and for all of you out there. Stay strong and know that you have the power to do what you need to do.

It makes the perfect addition to any massage and can be added to the laundry to give you clothes a wonderful scent. In addition it works well as a skin moisturizer and skin irritant soother. I was really interested in this product because I do suffer from anxiety, and it also effects my sleeping habits. Lavender is a well known stress reliever, and I've used this oil on my pillow, the back of my neck, and wrists right before bed. It helps calm me down. I also use it as an air freshener for the house. Since it is 100% lavender oil, the scent is a tad bit strong. You can easily dilute it with some water, or just make sure to use it sparingly. A little really does go a long way with this product.

For me, my fear with this product was that if I used it on my skin, it would irritate me. My skin doesn't usually get on well with all natural products. However, I had no problems with this oil. I've used it on various parts of my body, and I've had no adverse effects, thankfully.

I really like this oil. So much so that I'm almost running out of it. It's wonderful. I will certainly continue using it, as well as try other products from Maple Holistics, since it seems as though my skin gets along with their products pretty well.

10 Movies/Shows To Try Out On Netflix.

Black Mirror
This series is...strange. It reminds me of Tales From The Darkside in that there isn't really a "happy" or "resolved" ending to any episode. It covers many societal and psychological themes. It really gets into your head.

Stranger Things
Everyone is raving about this show, and so they should. It's so...weird. But in the best way possible. Science fiction with ridiculously talented kids and Winona Ryder is just awesome to watch.

Cube Zero
I randomly saw this on my recommendation list. I didn't realize it was a trilogy, this being the last of the three. It reminds me so much of the Saw series, and I'm fine with that. People are stuck in a maze of cube-shaped rooms, not knowing why or how they got there.

Jessica Jones
I've never really been into comic books, but with all the screen adaptions of them lately I couldn't help but be sucked into some of them. This series is awesome - at least from the view of someone who hasn't read the comic books. I love the noir kind of feel it has, Jessica's wardrobe is fucking awesome. Leather jacket, ripped jeans, black combat boots, a big scarf, and black hair. That's literally me just without the superhuman strength.

Sherlock
Most people would consider Sherlock Holmes a classic that you should at least read/watch once. Benedict Cumberbatch does an amazing job at playing the title role. And the directing and cinematography is so visually pleasing. Can't wait for a new season.

The Twilight Zone
I loved The Twilight Zone, Tales From The Darkside, and Tales From The Crypt as a kid. Netflix has so many episodes of this show I binge watched this for days. I had to stop myself cause I felt like I really was getting into The Twilight Zone.

F Is For Family
This show is hilarious. It's pretty much a mix of Family Guy, The Simpsons, and...pure perversion. I was sad when I got through the last episode. Now I have to wait for next year for a new season. Wah.

From Dusk Til Dawn (The Series)
I loved the movie From Dusk Til Dawn. It's one of the few movies I can watch over and over again and still be entertained. So I had to check out the series. It stems from the plot of the movie, but goes in a completely crazy direction. It can be a little...off every now and again. But if you loved the movie, try watching some of the series and see how you like it.

Any Of The [REC] Movies
Remember the movie Quarantine? Well that (and whatever sequels followed it) is based off of this Spanish movie. There's about four movies in this franchise, and they're all amazing.

Would You Rather
This is another gem I found recommended to me. This is horror that makes you sit on the edge of your seat to see what each character WOULD rather do. It's gorey and kind of violent, but there's so much psychological horror in this as well. That's usually my favorite.

Loreal True Match Foundation in Cappuccino
I've been wanting to try this foundation for years. I never got it because I didn't feel like figuring out my shade. But I finally did, and since I've been really liking this foundation. The most liquidy one in my collection, which would make one think I'd hate it because of my oily skin. But I don't see it adding any extra chicken grease to my face, so it's a win for me.

Wet N Wild Rainbow Highlighter
I felt like getting into the whole rainbow highlghter craze. Wet N Wild is cheap and readily available, so I tried this one out. It's wonderful because of the strips of color - you can pick your color combos. So if you feel like being a little neutral, you can just mix the pink, orange, and/or yellow for a peachy shade. Or if you wanna go bold, dip your brush into that purple at the end. It's so versatile.

Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water
Still loving this. Takes off my makeup in a few swipes, and it doesn't leave any film on my skin after use.

OPI Polish in Suzi - The First Lady Of Nails
I've been looking for a color like this for a while - a dark, army-type green. This is perfect.

Coloured Raine Liquid Lipstick in 2am
I freakin LOVE black lipstick. This one's liquid, but doesn't dry down all cement-like or uncomfortable. I've worn this so many times since I've gotten it, and have gotten a ton of compliments when I do. It's turned into my "everyday" lip color, because you know...I'm an evil witch who lives in black.

Bath And Body Works A Thousand Wishes Body Mist
I love this scent. It's kind of fruity, but with a little smell of musk in it. I've owned the body wash of it as well.

Maybelline Great Lash Mascara
I've purchased this a few times before. It gives my lashes a nice coat of black, but it doesn't do much in the volume or length department. It defines a decent amount too.

Clinique Stay Matte Foundation
I was really excited try this foundation. But it took me a while to purchase it is because at the time I did not like the idea of a $24 foundation. However, using it, I've found out it's worth the money. The shade selection for this foundation (I found my perfect shade in 26 Amber) is pretty damn good. Also, it feels good and looks very nice on the skin. But sadly, it's another foundation claiming matte results that did not provide for me. I was still oily throughout the day, but that could also just be that I'm so oily that it's inevitable for me to be a grease ball by the end of the day. It did some mattifying, but considering that's the whole product's claim to fame, it wasn't good enough for me.

Maybelline The Colossal Volume Express Mascara
One of my top favorite mascaras, hands down. I love this. It pumps your lashes with volume like nobody's business. Curls them amazingly too. I will have to worn you though - if you're one of those people who hate spider lashes (I absolutely love the look), this may not be good for you.

E.L.F. Hydrating Water Cleansing Cloths
First time using any type of skincare product from E.L.F. I've tried a few cleansing cloths before, and a lot of them worked and some didn't. This one is alright, but nothing extravagant. Took a lot of my makeup off (but leaves most behind, unfortunately), I didn't have any strange skin reactions (no stinging, etc), and it didn't leave any greasy film on my face afterwards. So again, for the cheap price point, it's cool. But there's other ways of taking off my makeup that I prefer much more.
