Since it was announced that Bushwick Open Studios will be taking place in October and not on their usual summer date, a couple fledgling fests have tried to fill the void. There’s been the Bushwick Arts Festival, which was a bit of a letdown, and the Bushwick Galleries Association’s Hot Summer Nights of extended hours, which are great but for galleries only. So when we heard tell of a new Bushwick art festival called the Bushwick Open Art Fair, we were skeptical. What would make their “Bears on Bicycles”-themed fair different from the other upstarts? But then the organizers told us they’re “currently looking into the permits required to have live animals at the show.”

That’s right, Marina Reiter of the East Village’s Studio 26 Gallery and Doug Hollier of Bushwick’s New Apostle Gallery are taking the “Bears on Bicycles” theme for serious. And while they’re planning to throw the fair concurrent to BoS and not before (86 more sleeps!), we wanted to know more. (If only to bask in the irony that the year BoS reschedules in order to seem less circus-like, a circus-themed art fair attempts to ride its coattails.)

Reiter, an abstract foil painter originally from Moscow, and Hollier, a post-pop artist originally from England, are both practicing artists in Bushwick and have seen their fair share of… fairs. In fact, the last time we bumped into Hollier, whose murals grace the facades of various Brooklyn buildings, he was showing off his clever portraits of David Bowie and Iggy Pop at Select Fair. “We have a good knowledge of the international art fair scene and how it’s kind of developed over the last 10 years,” he told us more recently, adding that a fair is where he met Reiter last December– at Aqua Art Miami.

They’ve kept in touch since then, and while walking near Hollier’s Starr Street home one night, remarked that the defunct window frame manufacturing building across the street would make for a fine art fair venue. “That’s how the idea got started,” said Hollier. Then in another conversation– Hollier doesn’t know how they got on the subject– Reiter mentioned that circuses in China and Russia still have performing bears on bicycles. “So we came up with the idea of calling it ‘Bears on Bicycles’ and giving it sort of a circus extravaganza theme,” he said. The art needn’t be circus-themed, but there will be circus decor and they’re in talks with several performance houses and individual performance artists.

“Although Bushwick has got a big visual arts scene it’s also got a very established performing arts scene. A lot of that is straight-up circus-style stuff,” explained Hollier. Reiter added: “If you go to a lot of performing venues in Bushwick, you come across a lot of carnival scenes, performances, burlesque. This is everything that comes to mind when you mention ‘Bushwick performing arts.’ So we thought that would be a really good idea for the first inaugural edition of the art fair, that kind of embodies the Bushwick performing arts atmosphere.” Not to mention Hollier is a bit of a Barnum & Bailey history buff, regaling us with how up until the ’50s, the “Greatest Show on Earth” stopped its big tops near Myrtle/Wyckoff. He’s also “personally fascinated by [P.T. Barnum’s] originally advertising strategies.” Erego the live animal permit enquiries.

Hollier said the inspirational window manufacturing building has been promised to a wall-climbing gym developer, but they found an approximately 20,000-square-foot former commercial/industrial facility between the Morgan and Jefferson L train stops. They launched their website Friday, are now accepting exhibitor applications, and are hoping to see submissions from both New York and international galleries. “We want to engage the blue chip galleries, but instead of showing just the typical expo-style convention center model, we want to incorporate the Bushwick scene,” said Reiter, with Hollier adding that “that’s the kind of key point. It’s giving international blue chip galleries the opportunity to present their artists’ work in the current avant-garde Bushwick scene, and creating a Bushwick theme that they’re not going to get in Switzerland, they’re not going to get in Asia, they’re only going to get it in Bushwick.”

According to a press release, “Bears on Bicycles” will commence with an invitation-only VIP Preview Extravaganza on Thursday, September 29th at 3 pm. The VIP Preview Extravaganza will run until 6 pm, at which time the art fair will open to the public. The fair is slated to run through Sunday, October 2nd.

As the House of Representatives was about to take a break for the afternoon on Wednesday, Democrats did something that has only been done twice before since the 1970s: seize the floor to demand a vote, specifically on gun control measures.

"Sometimes you have to do something out of the ordinary," said Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), a civil-rights icon, who led his own sit-ins at segregated lunch counters in Tennessee decades ago. "Sometimes you have to make a way out of no way."

Some three dozen House Democrats, led by Congressman John Lewis, disrupted the chamber's proceedings, staging a sit-down protest and refusing to leave the area near the podium. (AP)

Massive Explosion Rocks Tianjin Port

The extent of the damage and the cause of the massive explosion at a hazardous goods warehouse in the port area of Binhai outside of Tianjin at 11:30 pm Wednesday were still being evaluated as morning broke in China. From Steven Jiang, Dana Ford and Jethro Mullen at CNN :

The state-run news agency Xinhua reported that an explosion tore through a warehouse storing “dangerous and chemical goods” in Binhai, an area of the city by the water.
The firefighting division of the Chinese Public Security Ministry said firefighters were first called to the scene about a fire. An explosion went off after they arrived, it said.
As smoke continued to billow into the sky from the site Thursday, local authorities suspended firefighting efforts at the scene because of a lack of information on the “dangerous goods” that were stored at the warehouse, Xinhua reported.

There are moments in life when you wish you had a camera. Those times when you had a truly cathartic experience. When everything you think you know suddenly has no meaning. You are all alone and it comes to full realization. That moment of zen which shakes one to the core and can often generate extreme spiritual energy. For me It the daily reminder that Spirituality is Self Disciple. Mixed with a splash of my Taoist Belief in Finding My Own WAY toward a Balance.

In a very distinct way what I create on daily basis, my characters, their ideas and the Portraits in visual and written form have all been leading to a self awakening.

Fortunately years of training and true discipline, however odd or depraved it may seem to outsiders, have conditioned this Artist/ Journalist to always be aware and ready to capture perfection. Well one humans perception of perfection.

So here I dance as Shiva, Transformer or Destroyer of Worlds. Huh, now how powerful is the Human Mind and its ability to utilize and put into such practical use dormant knowledge at the very moment it is needed to create mimetically.

So perhaps my crazy concept of existing through method acting in order to fully understand the world I'm attempting to portray, doesn't seem so off base.

Imagine a world where we all could let go of inhibitions and self imposed limitations. Where any one of is Shiva, Transformer and Destroyer of Worlds. We all Walk our own path and find our own way. The trappings of our so called polite society weigh on the most "Normal" citizens psyche. A truly devious and subversive social control is at play here. And how dare anyone mention this publicly. Not that it is of any true national security. Well perhaps the possibility of awakening an entire country so blissful in its storied and dynastic slumber.

My goal is to create as if I am someone who has never been afflickted, Like a child. Just Like Picasso informed the world to do so many years ago.

What is your take on reality society and the spirit. I believe we are energy and our body is our current host. A vessel, Like the priceless Ming Vase Held by fellow conceptualist and blogger Ai Weiwei, so beautiful. Priceless, Perfect and flawless, truly an object of desire. Until He drops the ancient irreplaceable thing and it becomes so much more than anyone could have dreamed. And China becomes violently frightened that people may begin to realize just how perverse the over-valuation of an object versus the truly valuable and priceless vessel we are born into. The Self, Flawless and inspiring in any form perfect, Falling or broken. This my vessel and Ill with and to it whatever it takes to maintain my humanity.

Getting Stuck – at New York’s Lincoln Center fountain, with an approximate timeline of my life.

Editor’s Note: First I’ll quote an email from my 16-year-old daughter, Hope: “Okay so I just read
that whole thing- twice. And it made me cry a little bit- twice. Well played, Jonathan Harris, well
played. Everything he does is so perfectly unusual and against the norm. It’s like, I think I have this
view of the world and then in walks JH with his mind and ideas and I’m like, ‘oh, shit, now I have to
fit that new astonishing piece of information into my now turned-upside-down worldview.’ Once
again he’s made my life better by ruining it.”

Navigating Stuckness

GETTING STUCK

A few weeks ago, I was having dinner with my mom in Manhattan. She was telling me her plans
for this year’s Christmas card. “This year,” she said, “instead of writing my usual newsy card, I
think I’ll just say, ‘Amanda’s about to have a baby, and Jonathan moved from California back to
New York.’”

“Sounds good to me,” I said.

“Well,” she said, “it seems like you used to do so much in a year, and I always wanted to include
all your news. But this year, it just seems like you haven’t been doing very much, so I figured a
shorter note was in order.”

I squirmed in my chair and readjusted my napkin. My mom — maybe like all moms — has a
special way of saying just the thing that’ll hit your most vulnerable spot. She’s right — this year,
I haven’t been doing very much. I’ve spent a lot of time wandering into churches, reading old
journals, watching YouTube videos, and staring out of windows, but very little time making any
work. I’ve been feeling really stuck, unsure about what to do next, and struggling with a lot of
self-doubt and confusion.

After dinner, I walked across the street to the Lincoln Center fountain, and I sat on the granite
slab next to the water. The night was dark and cold. Operagoer's in tuxedos rushed to get taxis.
I could feel the black stone below my body. I looked at the city sky but I couldn’t see stars.
I turned my head to look at the water. The columns of water were moving up and down in some
kind of pattern, but I couldn’t tell what it was. Sometimes the columns of water were tall, and
moving up and down within their tallness. Other times, the columns of water were low, and
moving up and down within their lowness. The columns of water were never not moving.

I thought about stuckness, and about where I lost the flow. I remembered other times in my life
I’d been stuck, and how the stuckness always eventually passed. I thought how life is a lot like
that fountain, with its columns of water moving up and down, and how the low points are
actually thrilling because the high points are about to come back, and how the high points are
actually terrifying, because the low points always come next.

I thought of my life as a series of chapters, and I realized that each time I’d been majorly stuck,
it meant that a life chapter was ending, and that a new one needed to start — like the stuckness
was always a signal indicating imminent change. My life has had a bunch of different chapters,
each one beginning with the fresh-faced idealism of a new approach to living, and each one
ending with a period of stuckness and a moment of crisis. I’d like to tell you about those
chapters, in case they contain something useful for you.

I should say up front that I’m lucky to make a living mainly by giving talks about my work at
conferences, companies, and universities, which affords me a lot of time each year to make new
work (and to obsess endlessly about what that work should be). In Zen philosophy, they say that
anything pushed to its extreme becomes its opposite. Sometimes I wonder whether too much
freedom produces a weird kind of psychological paralysis, which is almost like prison. Still,
obviously I’m grateful to be grappling with too much freedom instead of too little.

CHAPTER 1: PAINT (1995-2003)

In high school, I was a total romantic. I had a field easel, and I’d stand around in meadows
doing oil paintings while wearing a little beret. In college, inspired by the travel journals of
Peter Beard, I kept elaborate sketchbooks filled with dead insects, pasted plants, ticket stubs,
watercolor paintings, photographs, and writing. I made these books by hand and kept them for
several years. At the same time, I was studying computer science in the early days of the
Internet, and I felt a growing rift between the sober art of painting and the dizzying potential
of the web. I couldn’t find a way to bridge these two worlds, and I started to feel torn — partly
pulled into the future, and partly stuck in the past. I’d graduated from Princeton but was still
living in town, doing odd jobs and generally feeling bad about myself and unsure about what to
do next. I took a trip to Central America and ended up getting robbed by five guys who put a
gun to my head, beat me up pretty badly, and stole my bag, which contained a sketchbook with
nine months of work. It was one of those odd moments in life that’s really traumatic, but which
ends up being a doorway into something new. After the robbery, I gave up painting, stopped
keeping sketchbooks, and resolved to use computer code as my new artistic medium. I wanted
to make things that guys with guns couldn’t steal. Around this time, I received a one-year
fellowship at Fabrica, a communications research center in northern Italy. I moved to Italy,
and I started writing code.
