Like all good things, including but not limited to raindrops on roses, time-travelling Deloreans, and every single line in Clue, the Love This Movie, Hate This Film podcast must come to an end.

That’s right, dear listeners, this will be the last episode of the ole LTMHTF podcast.

It’s been 3 years and 37 episodes since two friends decided to make a movie podcast together, and it’s been a great experience for both of us. Lots of new ideas, challenging argu–discussions, odd jokes, and even a little singing. We hope you’ve had a good time listening, because we’ve had a great time making it.

Fittingly, we hope, the topic of our last/three-year-anniversary episode is the end of the world. (Totally not narcissistic, right?) And, side note, we finally cover a little CanCon! Hurr-EH!

Thank you to everyone who’s listened, subscribed, meant to listen, totally intended to subscribe but kept forgetting, and especially those who commented, shared their own thoughts, and joined us as special co-hosts.

What do Jean Claude Van Damme and John Malkovich have in common? Not a heck of a whole lot, however they do both star in movies where they play themselves and their real names are used in the title.

The snake represents JCVD’s continued struggle with the vices of fame.

This week we’re talking about self-referential movies, and JCVD and Being John Malkovich certainly fit that definition. Despite one person being famous both for his roundhouse kicks to the face and starring in increasingly vapid action flicks, and the other being an eccentric, capital “A” Actor, the movie that is most effectively self-referential may surprise you!

As a belated nod to International Women’s Day (March 8), this edition of the podcast is all about young, strong – heroic, even – ladies.

If you can get past the awkward/misguided attempt to make a gag out of confusing heroine with heroin – oh, the hilarity of homophones! – there’s some good discussion here on why True Grit‘s self-possessed heroine Mattie Ross succeeds at being awesome when she could have been frustrating, and whether or not The Hunger Games‘ Katniss Everdeen is bad ass enough to star in her own True Grit sequel.

Going to the movies is kinda like falling in love: Sometimes you’re going to get your heart broken.

This has definitely been the case for us with both Zack Snyder’s Watchmen and J.J. Abrams’ Super 8 (among more than a few others, M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN.) So this month, we pinpoint exactly what it was that disappointed us so profoundly with these two movies, from extreme homage-paying to poor adaptability while transitioning from source material to screen.

We weren’t quite ready to let go of Harry and his magical friends (never let go!), so we went back to Hogwarts for this month’s episode of Love This Movie, Hate This Film. So grab a mug of butterbeer and join us!

Going through the first, third and final two instalments of the decade-long series, we discuss the faithfulness (or lack thereof) of the movies to the books, some disappointing character portrayals, our top 10 most agonizing omissions and the things that made the movies stand out from the books. This is a podcast about movies about movies. It’s kind of like Inception, only with layers of meaning instead of layers of dreams. And monsters. Lots of monsters.

Shaun of the Dead effectively launched Simon Pegg’s and Edgar Wright’s feature film careers, and reinvigorated the public’s love affair with slow-moving zombies. The Cabin in the Woods only got released because of The Avengers movie. We love them both, equally.
