My boyfriend went home for lunch, only to discover our box of dark chocolate covered potato chips were open, eaten and the tissue inside was licked clean and still wet. Now, this box of chocolates had been on our dining room table for about 3 weeks. We had snuck a few, but were supposed to have given them to his parents as a gift (that we just kept forgetting to give). He must have jumped on a chair and squirmed his way onto the table (what a bad dog!!).

This was QUITE a bit of chocolate, let alone dark chocolate, and thinking that the culprit had to be our 13 lbs dog Moe, I got pretty worried since I know how bad it can be for them. Moe is a garbage can, sniffing down and eating anything that is a different shade than the carpet. His stomach is made of steel and nothing makes him sick. Sometimes our two dogs work in sync where one will bat something down so they can both share, especially if Moe is too short to reach but he can sniff out something tasty up high.

I left work shortly after I heard about this and walked in to find Moe bouncing off the walls, almost literally. I called the vet and was told that I needed to give Moe and Chopper some Hydrogen Peroxide to make them throw up any chocolate that they might have eaten. She gave me the recommended dosage, I locked us all in the bathroom and prepared myself for quite a mess. Chopper was first, he has such a weak stomach anyway. It was quite a site with me trying to get a 45lbs dog to heave into the toilet. The verdict: no chocolate for Chops.

Moe sat there quietly, and we ended up sitting there for another 25 minutes with no action. I called the vet back to tell her the news, and she recommended that I give Moe another dosage. Now, I mentioned he has a stomach of steel - and we sat there for another 45 minutes with no action.

Off to the vet we went, where they injected him with a fluid to make him get sick within 30 seconds. As I sat in the waiting room I heard a horrifying devilish sound as he finally got rid of all that chocolate. With eyes wide (both the Vet & Moe) the Vet brought him out to me and sat down. "I have no idea how he can even hold in that much food in that tiny stomach. It looked like twice the amount he should be able to digest! And it smelled like chocolate still, because it was probably the most chocolate I've ever seen consumed. With that much chocolate in this tiny dog there is a good chance that he would have started to seizure, tremor or even have his heart race so fast that it could be devastating?" I felt horrible, and yet so glad that we noticed that he had eaten this box of chocolates...

Yet another tale to add into the book of Moe stories... This dog I tell you. :)

Showcased on PetBoutique Blog

Where has the time gone? Why?

By creating 'fluorescent' genes South Korean scientists have created a cloned glowing puppy. Scientists in the U.S., Japan and in Europe previously have cloned fluorescent mice and pigs, but this would be the first time dogs with modified genes have been cloned.

The glowing dogs show that it is possible to successfully insert genes with a specific trait, which could lead to implanting other, non-fluorescent genes that could help treat specific diseases, Professor Lee Byeong-chun said.

The scientist said his team has started to implant human disease-related genes in the course of dog cloning. Supposedly that will help scientists find new treatments for genetic diseases such as Parkinson's.

Toys to inspire activity and keep them interested in moving about

To help support pet weight loss, APOP tested a bevy of fitness and weight-loss products and compiled a list of a few favorite toys. While you are the best toy a pet could have, these other ones can take your place when you're busy, or add to the excitement of your pet playtime :)

Rumble Bumps

Playing off of a dogs natural hunting instinct that is usually triggered by sound, your dog will want to stop the sound of this ball while playing. This gives your dog the natural instinct to engage with the toy.
• touch-activated sounds grab a dog's attention
• sound ceases when toy is at rest
• knobby shape bounces unpredictably when tossed
• chew-friendly design and construction

Dog Tornado

This interactive food game has four layers with rotating discs, and three of these layers have compartments for hiding snacks. Each time your pet rotates a layer, they reveal a hidden snack. The game can be made more or less challenging by altering the layers. What a great way to entertain the brain and work on coordination! Even though this toy doesn't directly help your pet lose weight, it's great to exercise their mind to improve their health.

On our last vet visit she said that if Moe gained another pound, he'd officially be obese. Really?! But I see MUCH larger round pups than Moe. As our next vet visit is approaching, it's time to do some fixing on our little 'fatty' :)
Recently there has been a lot of press about people and obesity. On top of this, it has also become a topic of conversation to look at our pets and their eating habits and weight gain. Researching associations like The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention have popped up over the last few years. Who knew that associations like this existed?

According to a 2008 APOP study, more than 50 percent of the 75 million dogs and 88 million cats in the United States are overweight or obese. A similar study done by Purina tallied that 50% of obese animal owners think that their pets have an ideal body image. Which makes us wonder if our perception has changed as we 'normalize' fat.

Over the next few posts I'll list some fun ways to get your dog back in shape - check back soon!

Lovebarklee Dog Blog has been nominated - Vote for us!!

For the first time in the history of the Internet that a contest is being held to identify the 20 best dog-related blogs on the web.
Not only is this toy great for fetch, tug of war, or water games - it's also a dog food dispenser, that is somewhat of a puzzle.

If you have the pleasure of owning and loving a dog, you may at times wonder if two dogs would be even better. Will you have twice the enjoyment, or will it be double trouble?

Dogs are known to be pack animals so do prefer to have company. However, it's not important that their pack be the same species, and they will happily form close bonds with their human pack.

There are advantages and disadvantages to having two dogs in your life. Let's look at the advantages.

As we've already mentioned, dogs enjoy living in packs, and don't usually like living a solitary life. This means that if your dog is on his own for long periods of time, he may find his own ways to amuse himself. The result may be digging, barking and other nuisance behaviors. If he has a canine companion, he may be less likely to spend his time annoying the neighbors and destroying your yard.

A new pup can give your elderly dog a mental lift, and he may start to take more of an interest in life. Not only that, but your older dog will help your pup learn to fit your way of life, and make his introduction into your family easier.

Now the disadvantages, and there are a few.

Look at your budget. Can you afford two lots of vaccinations, worm treatments and heart worm medications? Do you have the cash for twice the amount of dog food? Money is tight these days, and you need to make sure you can afford to take care of another dog before you bring him into your life.

Two dogs means twice the dog hair to sweep up and twice the poop to scoop. If you're a dog lover, that's not going to be a big problem to you.

You'll also need to spend time on training. If you can deal with one dog with a few bad habits, you may find that two dogs with the same habits are just a bit much to bear. This is important also in maintaining your position as pack leader. Two dogs may bond together more so than with you and have less interest in spending time with you. You need to spend individual time with each dog, and train them to maintain their bond with you.

In the dog pack, there is only one leader, and you'll notice early on which of your dogs is the boss. You'll need to comply with their decision. Your top dog should be the first to get his dinner, and the first to get a cuddle. If you don't go along with their pack structure, you may find that your boss dog feels the need to reinforce his position, which will lead to squabbles between them.

Many families own two dogs and they're not really any more difficult to manage than one dog. The biggest issue is money. If your finances allow it, and you have the time, two dogs really are better than one. You'll have twice the doggy love to prove it!
We support each-others blogs and learn something new at the same time.

This guest post is brought to you by Dog Fence DIY's staff veterinarian Dr. Susan Wright. Dog Fence DIY has a variety of wireless electric dog fence systems to choose from. Dog Fence DIY not only has a variety of systems but will also help figure out which system is most beneficial for you and your pet. You can count on getting the lowest price for the best product.

Dogs bark for a reason, and unless you understand why your dog is barking, it's very hard to put a stop to it. Here are some common reasons for dogs to bark excessively:

Alert their pack (that means you!) of an intruder in his territory. Unfortunately a dog's definition of intruder can be quite different to ours. He may try and chase birds from the yard, or bark to chase a squirrel from his territory.

Some dogs take this a step further and bark at anyone walking past their fence, or even dogs in the next yard. In this case, you can often solve the problem by restricting the dog to an area where he can't see the fence, or the dogs. There's nothing to trigger his barking, so he should stop.

Your dog may also bark to get attention. He may want a pat, or to play ball, or he can even bark to make you feed him.

The problem with this behavior is that in many cases, you pat him or play with him or feed him, to stop the noise. Bad move. If your dog discovers that barking gets him the attention he wants, there's no incentive for him to stop.

Some dogs who suffer separation anxiety bark constantly when they're left alone. These dogs also show other symptoms of anxiety such as panting and can be destructive.

If your dog has separation anxiety, or if your initial efforts to reduce his barking don't work, you may need the help of a veterinary behaviorist. They can confirm the reason for your dog's excessive noise making, and help develop a plan of attack.

Frustration or boredom leads to excessive barking, particularly in working breeds. They may also dig holes and pull the laundry off the line to amuse themselves. These dogs need training and exercise to keep their minds and bodies active.Try to provide a stimulating environment for these dogs.

Sometimes leaving him with interactive toys such as stuffed kongs or plastic balls which dispense kibble when they're rolled around will be enough to keep him amused and alleviate his boredom.

It's worth making the effort to manage your dog's barking. It's not only good for neighborly relations, but he may also feel more relaxed, and be a happier dog.

This may not sound like a big deal to many, but having time to use on surfing the web has been unheard of for me over the past few months.

Thinking of our dog Chopper, he LOVES to play and chomp on empty water bottles. While perusing PoochieHeaven.com I came across a special little Santa that allows you to place your empty water bottle inside.
