Do you have a favorite art period? If so, what is it?

In France, the term haute couture is actually protected by the law. A fashion house can only use the label “haute couture” after they have been granted the ability to do so by the Chambre de commerce et d’industrie de Paris. Fancy! Established in 1945 and updated in 1992, the criteria for a fashion house to call itself a “couture house” and use the term haute couture in any form are as follows:

• Design made-to-order clothing for the house’s private clients. One or more fittings necessary.
• Have an atelier in Paris that employs at least 15 people full time.
• Each season (two times a year), the house must present a collection to the Parisian press containing at least 35 looks that are comprised of both day and evening wear.

You might recognize some names like Chanel, Christian Dior, Givenchy Alaïa (“…this is an Alaïa! An a-what-a? It’s like a totally important designer.” Major points to the first person who gets this reference!), Elie Saab, Valentino, and Versace who are all officially couture houses.

See. Learning is fun! Okay, now let us immerse ourselves in all that is Elie Saab Haute Couture SS 2012.

That deep v-neck has me wishing it was totally appropriate to walk down the aisle baring half my chest to all of those attending my wedding. But it’s not. So instead, I’ll opt for the high-neck option which is still beyond.

Nude. I’m loving nude. I’m even considering going against tradition and wearing a nude color dress for my wedding. Any of these will do thank you very much.

This light blue reminds me of cotton candy. I’m not a huge fan of cotton candy (it’s so sticky!) but I am a huge fan of cotton candy blue when it’s in the form of an Elie Saab gown. Also, if The Little Mermaid eventually got married, I imagine she would wear that last dress.

Lovely: Tell us about THE dress and what inspired your look.

Katrina: I won’t lie, the dress was a huge point of anxiety for me. I went to 9 proms in high school so it was really important for me to get it perfectly. I had 3 criteria for the look and it ended up fitting SO MANY different styles. I wanted something visually interesting with a classic silhouette that was sweet yet slightly sexy. Seriously, you cannot imagine how many different looks fit that description!! The staff at Lovely were beyond amazing and helped me really pull it all together and in the end the Watters Mojave was the best dress I could’ve ever chosen. The pattern was unique and eye catching but simple enough to hold up to the ice blue 1920’s debutante ball jewelry I fell in love with and was determined to wear.

Lovely: What were the most important details to pulling off your dream wedding?

Katrina: Evan and I really wanted a wedding that reflected our lives together and being that Brooklyn is where we met and fell in love, it was the perfect setting for our day. On top of that we wanted a venue that was unconventionally beautiful with great food and drink. reBar really fit the bill. The golden tones of the exposed brick and reclaimed steel made it a comfortable and beautiful backdrop for the photos of our big day. We wanted a truly intimate day and were so amazingly lucky that Evan’s sister is a Rabbi and was able to marry us. She performed the most loving and personal ceremony full of anecdotes, loving stories and the tiny details that make me love my husband more every day.

Lovely: What was the most memorable moment?

Katrina: Our first look. I fell in love all over again when I saw my future husband’s face as I entered our venue. The most memorable moment I shared with everyone  was on the dance floor. We secretly asked the band to play Forget You and they really brought the house down. Everyone was on the dance floor just rocking their hearts out. Seeing everyone from my parents and grandmother to my closest friends sweating and dancing next to each other was a moment I will truly never forget.

Lovely: If you could give future brides any advice, what would it be?

Katrina: Don’t lose yourself in the planning. At the end of the day your wedding is a reflection of you and the love you share with your future husband. I also found the help of my amazing friends to be the most valuable advice and assistance I could have ever asked for. Use your resources. You won’t regret it!

We are going to do a vintage chandelier cluster in our lobby. Aren’t these chandeliers we found divine? They came from Etsy, Craiglist, and The Rose Bowl Flea Market (which is out of this world!)

Then just like NY, we wanted HUGE custom mirrors so you can feel completely glam. We think these huge 4ft x 6ft puppies will do the trick and they are so sweet.

And we are super stoked about a rug we just got yesterday. Jeni Maus from Found Rentals has been doing some scouting for us. I sent her this color palette for our lobby area, and she found this rug shortly after! She is like a vintage decor super sleuth! Isn’t it perfect?
