UDRS debate

I have always been a passive supporter for the UDRS system. I thought the current version of it which gives good share of role to the on-field umpires makes it good. But from my observations in the tournament so far, I feel there is some minor flaw in the consistency of the system. It was evident in the decisions for Sarwan and Bell. Both decisions could have easily been the other way round. On careful observation, both had one thing in common between them and it is that they were finally left to the decision of the on-field umpire and who more often than not would chose to upheld his decision as expected. Does it have a solution? Yes! One of them could be the use of additional technology like hot spot. Unfortunately this World cup doesnt have the luxury of hot spot technology. However, the uncertainties in the game due to errors and misjudgments make it even more beautiful and interesting. So lets hope we bring in more technology to strike a balance between errors and fair play

College Station

College Station is one of those small cities where you are stuck between being content with your place and yearning for sophisticated realms of "big city" life. Personally I feel this is the ideal place to live your student life as you get to spend minimum and you are away from distractions. But at the same time, sometimes when you are bored with your routine and you need a break you dont have many options, do you? Personally I am happy with this life and I would just be happy if I get to see more places in between. Raavanan - a perspective

Hi all! I have decided to post my take on raavana :) well.. finally!!!
Before I start off I should mention about the hype and expectations for this movie. I enjoyed watching movies First Day First Show (FDFS) without much effort in getting tickets. But to my surprise when i reached the theater with my friends (usually I watch movies alone unless my friends are in town) at 10 that there are no tickets for the first show and the show is pre-poned to 10.15 thanks to the lesser running length. What?! How on earth?! Luckily the movie had been released in another theater also and we rushed to the spot to grab tickets. And the FDFS was scheduled at the usual 11 o clock time only. Usually I dust away all the hype and expectations before I watch a movie but this time I couldnt do it completely. Yes I was expecting something from a genius like Mr. Manirathnam. I am not an experienced critic so please overlook my error if any :)

Review: May contain SPOILERS
Every movie gets formed from a single streak of thought and so is this one. Mani sir should have thought about different shades in a human persona (as he mentioned "like two sides of a coin"). He explores this theme and finds inspiration from the Demon-king Raavana from the epic Ramayana (note its not new to him as he made an excellent adaptation of mahabharatham esp karnan-dhuriyodhanan part in his masterpiece Thalabathy) and decides to paint the canvas with layers of Raavana's traits (symbollically ten heads :) ). Now wait is that good enough? Will it end up in controversies? Should it be like thalabathy or a even more faithful adaptation of the epic? etc I am sure Mani sir would have had answers to all such questions. He set his canvas ready and could have decided to make the painting look richer and grand rather than working too much on the subject of painting (I felt so). He chooses exotic locations, gets an extraordinary technical crew, two awesome legendary camera-men and more than capable actors and started his mission. I dont know, but i feel he might of had a dielemma in striking balance between the visual presentation of the movie and the content. Usually we get to see beautiful elements in Mani sir's screenplay (alaipayuthey, kannathil muthamittal, mouna raagam, nayagan etc had Mani sir's touch in the way story is told and the on screen happenings). But in this one Mani sir seemed to have settled with a basic predictable plot (adaptation of ramayana with important characters and a few additions in his style) but decided to make it as a visual treat. The story line was predictable but the presentation is what that stands out and Mani sir has won the game with a different approach. I guess people complaining that they were not able to "understand" some of his movies might have impacted him, only He knows :D
Full marks to cinematography :) Mr. Santosh sivan stands apart and credits to Mr. Manikandan too for his part in it. I was awed by the visual appeal of the movie and probably will watch it again for the same. There was beauty in almost every frame and it was pleasant experience indeed.
Coming to art direction. I guess it is a very tough job for them to work in such location and they have pulled a stupendous job. With due credits to them, I felt that nativity was missing in some parts (esp flashback) neverthless it was a great considering it as a bi-lingual
Acting wise Mr.Vikram stands tall above rest of his co-stars with Mrs.Aishwarya very close. I liked the way Veera(Vikram) says he hears ten voices. That is enough to summarise his character. Ash pulls off a good job as Ragini, a fearless, emotional, humane character and dances well too. She indeed has one of the most expressive eyes :D Prithvi does a decent job but i felt he could have been given more on-screen time. I really liked Mr.Karthik and Mr.Prabhu's cameo and Karthik adds the comical flavour to the movie. Other actors also have done justice to their part
Music: ARR at his best :) Songs, BGMs everything rocked :) Waiting for endhiran album :)
Dialogues were passable and some of them were very good (esp scene near the giant idol, bridge fight, climax). But Sujatha sir we miss you :(
Mani sir: Well I should say I had expected more from him. I was not expecting just a visual treat. I was expecting his touch to be evident in the screenplay, something like what he did in thalabathy and was very curious too. Unfortunately i felt something was missing in this movie. This is not Mani sir's best surely. But hang on! Does that mean the movie is not good? Certainly not. The movie stands out in terms of making and visual appeal. It has some beautiful, poetic moments but on the whole it was not the best.
Special mention to certain things that I liked much in the movie: Awesome presentation visually, Karthick sir's intro, 2 songs,(usure pogudhey and kodu potta), bridge fight, climax, dragon fly shot (awesome composition), scene where karthick sir enters Veera's place and Ragini's stunning eyes.

Overall it was a pleasant experience watching this movie but I definitely expect Mani sir's touch in his next movie and am sure I shall be satisfied. Mani sir please understand that your canvas having a common scenary is not acceptable easily and you have proved it time and again.

Verdict: 3/5 Watch it without expectations. Its a visual marvel!!!

Aayirathil oruvan is a good movie. I gutsy attempt to break free from the commercial path of tamil cinema. Second half was a surprise for people who expected adventure stuff like first half. If u miss a single scene ,in second half esp, it would be difficult to comprehend the movie. I loved the symbolisms and tamil involve. Definitely it is a welcomable change in tamil cinema. Please encourage this movie to see better story oriented movies. This may not be a perfect one as there are some flaws but i feel they are pardonable considering the effort. Guys who say its copy of all hollywood movies please.. the scenes may have hollywood influences but their significance in this movie is entirely different. Lot of research has been done to give a glimpse of old tamil culture and the lives. Please watch this movie in theater and if you dont like it then its your opinion and that is given due respect. But please bear in mind the effort and the boldness in breaking the shackles of commercial potboilers..
PS: I have seen the movie twice and could understand everything completely in second viewing and i feel its awesome. May watch again too :)
