Taste Test: Alternatives to Dairy Milk

I have a confession to make. I hate milk. White dairy milk, that is. (I love chocolate milk!) I'm not lactose intolerant or anything. I just don't care for the taste... especially the aftertaste. Whether it's skim, 1%, 2%, or whole... I'm not a fan. I don't mind a splash of it on my cereal. And I'll drink it with the right proportion of chocolate, brownies, or Oreos. And try as I might to justify eating a gob of chocolate just to down a glass of milk, I decided the time had come to seek out alternatives.

For while now, I've been wanting to try both soy milk and almond milk. I'd look at the cartons every trip to the grocery store. Curious as to the taste, reluctant when it came to the price. You see, on a college student budget... something that costs sometimes nearly double the cost of regular milk gets left out of the grocery cart in favor of tacos, wine, coffee, and other staples. But this past week I decided to give up a few tacos and try some new milk.

The first one I bought was Silk soy milk in vanilla (left). It was love at first sip. It isn't like dairy milk at all, which is probably why I love it so much. It has a delicious, subtle vanilla taste and leaves no sour aftertaste. I drank the stuff non-stop---a glass as a snack, a glass with my supper, over my cereal. I guzzled it like there was no tomorrow. And by the end of the second day after I'd purchased it, the carton was empty.

For you health-conscious undergrads out there, I've snatched up a couple nutritional facts. Silk soy milk boasts 6 grams of soy protein, 50% more calcium than dairy milk, no lactose or dairy, low saturated fat, naturally occurring ALA omega-3, and zero cholesterol. Plus, it's a shelf stable product that can be stored for up to 12 months!

I hit up the grocery store again a few days later. While I longed to buy five or six cartons of my newly beloved soy milk, I decided to try almond milk this time around. I bought Blue Diamond's Almond Breeze in the sweetened original (right). I find almond milk to taste a lot more like traditional dairy milk. It feels the same on the tongue and has a similar taste, but it is sweeter and doesn't leave the sour dairy aftertaste. I like it more than dairy milk, but less than the vanilla soy milk. (I think I might like it better if I get it in the vanilla flavor next time.)

As for the nutritional 411 on this almond milk: Almond Breeze has half the calories of dairy milk. The sweetened version that I tried is sweetened with evaporated cane juice ("a less processed form of sugar that retains more of sugar cane's nutritional value"). It's also a great source of calcium.

So there you have it! If you've tried either of these or plan to... let me know what you think! This week I'm on to trying the chocolate versions. ;)

Olioboard: Exposed Brick Bedroom

You know me and exposed brick... it's a decor love affair. The board above depicts what is pretty much my dream bedroom. Exposed brick walls all the way around. Exposed wooden beams on the ceiling. A perfectly worn wood floor. I love four-poster beds and this white one feels modern and vintage-y at the same time. A vibrant blue pillow and lovely floral one add color and pattern. Nearby, a round side table holds a bold orange lamp. A colorful vintage poster hangs overhead. At the foot of the bed is a velvet bench in a crisp green color as well as a couple off-white vintage suitcases stacked on top of each other. The focal point of the room is a big oriental rug in a gorgeous blue and boasting an intricate floral print. A dark, modern dresser is kept clutter-free, accessorized with only a cluster of candles and a vase of blue flowers. Books are stacked vertically along one of the wooden columns. A bright orange-red chair and brass floor lamp make for a cozy reading spot. In the background is a French Provincial armoire and antique mirror. Simple white sheers cover the windows and a dainty chandelier illuminates everything from above.

The room is feminine and romantic without the frills. With the eclectic mix of furniture and decor, it is fun, fresh, and unexpected. I could definitely see myself living here. ;)

I usually go for lots of color, but every once in a while I yearn for a more neutral palette. Creamy neutrals paired with white, black, and gray come together to create a chic, relaxing office space perfect for writing, blogging, or curling up with a good book and spot of tea. Walls the color of cafe au lait. Milky white trim. And sheer ivory curtains. A sleek, no-fuss black desk topped with a gunmetal lamp, rattan accessories, and elegant white orchids. A linen inspiration board hung next to painted black wooden sign displaying a French quote. An industrial wastebasket tucked underneath the desk. Classic black and white stripes liven up the floor. In the corner sits an ivory and charcoal chair in a fun print. A simple round side table for tea and books.

Since picking a winner was up to me, I found the decision to be very difficult. All of the entries were so cute, so pulled together, so office perfect. I tossed and turned last night trying to choose a winner. But I did promise that I'd announce one in the morning. So without further ado...

Our Generation: Professional > Domestic?

Ladies, we're living in the age of powerful women. In the grand, historical scheme of things... it really wasn't that long ago that women were fighting for their right to vote. Today, females match and even surpass their male counterparts. Whether you're studying in college, hunting for a post-grad job, or climbing the "corporate ladder," you're part of one of the first generations (if not the first) that truly praises motivation, ambition, and intelligence in women.
We don't face some the same kind of stereotypes that our great-grandmothers, grandmas, or even mothers did. In general, we will graduate from high school, earn our degree, and enter the job force believing just as much as men do that the sky's the limit.

But of course this throws off the whole dynamic that the American Dream and history in general have built families and traditions upon. It's becoming increasingly popular for a woman to become the main breadwinner in her family---or for men to take on roles as "stay at home dads."

What piqued my interest on this subject was Bloomberg Businessweek's story Behind Every Great Women by Carolyn Hymowitz. I really hope you check out the full article on Businessweek's website, but I just wanted to share some of the major points and questions raised by Hymowitz.

"This role reversal is occurring more and more as women edge past men at work. Women now fill a majority of jobs in the U.S., including 51.4 percent of managerial and professional positions, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. Some 23 percent of wives now out-earn their husbands, according to a 2010 study by the Pew Research Center. And this earnings trend is more dramatic among younger people. Women 30 and under make more money, on average, than their male counterparts in all but three of the largest cities in the U.S."

"...bookstore shelves and e-book catalogs are jammed with self-help books for ambitious women, of which I’d Rather Be in Charge, by former Ogilvy-Mather Worldwide CEO Charlotte Beers, is merely the latest. Some, such as Hirshman’s top-selling Get to Work, recommend that women “marry down”—find husbands who won’t mind staying at home—or wed older men who are ready to retire as their careers take off. What’s indisputable is that couples increasingly are negotiating whose career will take precedence before they start a family."

In New York Magazine's story Alpha Women, Beta Men, Ralph Gardner Jr. brings his perspective to the table as well. You can read the full article here on the NY Magazine website, but here's what I wanted to highlight:

"From Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Alias to Kill Bill, the culture has for some time been awash in fantasies of powerful women. Fetching as these female superheroes may be—and however potent at the box office and in the Nielsens—are these really the same chicks the average, or even above-average, guy wants to curl up next to in bed in real life? Perhaps not. As the wives grow more powerful and confident, their husbands often seem to diminish in direct proportion to their success."

"Indeed, there’s little evidence to show that as women acquire financial muscle, relations between the sexes have evolved successfully to accommodate the new balance of power. Neither the newly liberated alpha women nor their shell-shocked beta spouses seem comfortable with the role reversal."

Now, I want to hear from you ladies on the brink of graduating college or newly thrown out into the work world. How do you feel about the reversal of roles when it comes to providing financially for a family? Does occupation and salary mean much to you when thinking about the qualities you desire in a future husband? Are you so determined to become financially independent that you don't care? Or is marriage and a family the absolute last thing on your mind right now?

I suppose I should weigh in with my stance, but honestly I'm not sure where I stand. Sometimes I'm torn. I desire a professional career, financial independence, and success. While marriage is neither the first or last thing on my mind, I hope for it at some point... and then eventually a family life down the line. I've witnessed professional women balancing careers with husbands and families---and it impressed, fascinated, and honestly amazed me at how they manage to do it. More than ever, it leaves me wondering what I want. I've always imagined my future husband working an awesome job he loved, too... but the reality of such situations are highlighted in those two articles (among many others).

Maybe my reaction is a little vague. I sound a little uncertain and confused and indecisive. But I'm getting the feeling that I'm not alone. In my future, I want the job, the husband, and eventually the kids. I want to be the successful professional, amazing wife, and wonderful mom... but with all those roles would I be spreading myself too thin? Is that having my cake and eating it, too? For now, I'm just going with the flow and hoping things fall into place... or that I can at least move them into place in the future.

What are your ideas on this? Would you feel guilty or even weird about being the main breadwinner of your future family if it happened to work out that way? What if you were the professional and your guy was a stay-at-home dad? What do you prefer?

Picture the 1950s and 1960s---the June Cleaver types. Are future generations (and ours) going to be a polar opposite? Or will society find a balance?

Olioboard: Urban Eclectic Living Room

I felt like getting a little urban with this decor board. The room was literally a blank slate---gleaming white floors, exposed brick painted white, support columns, and exposed piping and metal work everywhere. Very industrial chic.
Crimson curtain panels pop against all the grayish white. Since I love the contrast of the right green against the right red, I added this handsome velvet sofa in eye-catching olive green. Nearby, a graceful chair's femininity balances out the sofa's masculine silhouette. A chocolate brown and ivory chevron rug livens up the floor. I kept the seating area furniture eclectic by adding in a round black coffee table, classic floor lamp, leather pouf, and unique tree stump-like end table. Fun pillows, a stack of books, a red tray, and a white vase of unexpectedly purple flowers complete the sofa area.

In the background, storage and artwork play on the room's lofty ceiling by going vertical. In the far left corner, books are stacked on a vertical rack. Between the windows, a long frame displays favorite black and white photos in a modern but classic way. At far right, I arranged an office area. The great modern desk possesses the same masculine lines as the couch, while another feminine chair (in a delicious apricot color) softens the hard edges. An antique clock and industrial wall files add to the eclectic feel of the space. Next to the column stands a fabulous coat tree that doubles as a conversation-starting work of art. Overhead everything hangs a breathtaking, industrial-style chandelier.

Elena's Bedroom | Vampire Diaries Decor

By reader request, I'm diving into the world of Vampire Diaries to show you how to decorate like Elena. (Surprisingly... she incorporated no garlic into her bedroom.)

I've only seen an episode or two of The Vampire Diaries, but I can see why Elena's bedroom was requested for this feature. It's a lovely, feminine, and classic space---and a sweet escape from the dark world of bloodlusting vampires! Her big bed is dressed in soft, billowy linens. A large horse drawing hangs framed overhead the headboard. Floral pink curtains cast a rosy glow on the room during daylight hours. A charming white desk collects school work, awards, and a coffee mug. On the floor, a striped pink rug is spread out.

This is my favorite shot of Elena's bedroom. It gives you a really good look at the creamy, vanilla color of her walls. I love the built-in bookcase, too.

While it wasn't easy tracking down pictures of Elena's bedroom, I think those two gave me enough to go on to get a grasp on her decor style: simple, understated, feminine.

Pick a headboard with a shape similar to Elena's. Hers is curvy and a dark brown wood. I went with this black one because it echoes the shape in a modern way. Outfit your bed in a white or pale pink comforter. I love how this horse-illustration pillow has the same effect as the horse artwork over Elena's bed---so I put the horse on her bed rather than above it. Add in some more pink with floral curtains, a patterned pillow, and striped rug. When it doubt, go for rosy almost-mauve hues rather than baby pinks or hot pinks to keep the room from becoming too fussy. For furniture throughout the room, I went with an ever-so-slightly-eclectic mix of traditional pieces: a simple dark brown dresser, shabby chic nightstand, white bookcase, and cream desk. I pulled a cute upholstered stool up to the desk rather than a chair. For artwork, frame your favorite black and white photos gallery-style in black frames with over-sized white mats. Add accessories such as books, picture frames, and awards, but keep clutter to a minimum.

Although I believe vampire lore says that vampires aren't reflected in mirrors (and Elena, I hear, runs around with a few vampire friends) I still had to hang a mirror over her dresser. Think your own vampire friends will notice?

My Cinderella Story

^This happened to me today! Well, almost...

Boy are you in for a treat!

So once upon a time... it was a dark and stormy day. (Today, actually.) Upon arriving home to my castle (errr, uh... apartment) I decided against running through the downpour in my brand new shoes. So I took 'em off, shoved into my small purse, and opened the door of my pumpkin carriage. Ok, you caught me... SUV. I took off barefoot through the cold rain. After running up to the third story and warming up my cold, aching, numb feet on the warm, fuzzy carpet... I glanced at my purse and noticed that one shoe was missing.

"Please, oh please, let me have dropped it just outside my door! Or in my kitchen! ...Or even just inside the gate (or, ahem... apartment entrance)!" I thought to myself.

I pulled on my green rubber rainboots and trudged along, retracing my steps. Through my apartment, out the door, and down the five or six flights of stairs, I had still not come across my missing shoe. Out into the rain I went again.

There in the parking lot stood a guy, picking up my shoe from a puddle. I trotted over (as gracefully as I could considering the five-pounds of rubber on each foot) and laughed in relief.

"You found my shoe!" I gushed.

"This is kinda like Cinderella," he chuckled as he handed it back to me.

And we all lived happily ever after!

Well, that's the gist of my Cinderella story anyway. Although he was a handsome looking chap... he was no prince. He didn't drop to his knees and put my shoe back on my foot for me. (Although, I wouldn't have complained!) And he didn't sweep off me feet and take me off to his castle either. I just smiled, laughed awkwardly, and thanked him. And I'll probably never meet him again...

But that's the closest I've gotten to any fairy tale. Kinda embarrassing, but I have my lovely little shoe back and I'm quite happy about that. :)

Now that you're enchanted by my sweet little anecdote, you're probably in the mood for some more fairy tale fun---aren't chya?

Spring Fever Decor

I know we're barely halfway through February, but with the mild weather we've been enjoying... I'm suffering from Spring Fever even earlier this year. (Which, of course, makes the impending snowfall especially depressing.) I'm getting antsy for floral patterns, pastels, and little critters popping up in decor.
In the room above, I love the genius mixing of pattern and color: a blue and cream toile bedskirt, a mustard and white floral comforter, black and white patterned sheets, a headboard that matches the bedskirt, and a crocodile-like rug. The wooden nightstands are country chic. The bird silhouette pillow is fun modern. The gold glass base lamps are to-die-for eclectic. And those fluffy pink flowers are perfect.

This quilt is a glorious representation of Spring. Pink and coral, sky blue and green, periwinkle and yellow... I love the pairings! Crisp stripes offset the abstract florals. The headboard is fuss-free and the bed is low to the ground. A simple chest acts as a nightstand and host to a cute bucket of fresh-picked flowers. Paper lanterns float in front of shabby-chic paneling. And in the background hang breezy sheer curtains. I can already hear the birds singing...

House Beautiful

Spring doesn't have to mean pastels. The juicy red, hot pink, and grass green in this wordly bedroom have me lusting for springtime gardens. I love the over-sized flower print over the bed, which is dressed in Moroccan-style linens.

Simple Casual Living

You didn't really think you could get through a post about bedrooms without bring in some gray, did you? The soft heather gray on the walls in this room are soooo lovely behind a white iron bed, shabby chic barn door, and ivory picture frames. The accents of baby blue and soft pink are too good to be true. So romantic and cottage-y.

Lastly, the color combination in this bedroom could cheer up any rainy spring day: sunshine yellow and fuschia. Plus, I'm in love with that little porcelain white rabbit underneath the nightstand. What a perfectly darling detail!

Hurry up and get here, April!

Blair's Room | Gossip Girl Decor

Manhattan's debutante Blair Waldorf happens to be my favorite Gossip Girl character. Her behavior and feelings vary from snobbish to sensitive, but she always (except for a few rare occasions) looks and acts totally pulled together. Her luxurious bedroom is fit for a queen---and is as pulled together as her preppy fashion ensembles.

The bedroom is a dreamy mix of sky blue and creamy vanilla. Her silky bed is plush with blankets and pillows; a bench at the foot keeps magazines and books close at hand. A big, pale blue oriental rug warms up the hardwood floors. In the far corner is an elegant chaise lounge and framed photo of Audrey Hepburn, illuminated by a glittering chandelier.

Rich ivory curtains drape over the large windows. Blair can admire herself in a full-length mirror. A round ottoman with a tray on top keeps track of candles and other fine necessities. Near the bed, the gold nightstand is kept clutter-free and classy with a handsome lamp and a couple books.

I love Blair's dresser top. The oval mirror is curvy and feminine. Lush pink and pale green blooms freshen up the vignette, which is lit up by a small glass-based lamp. A framed photo of Blair and Serena graces the left side. Cosmetics and perfume are neatly scattered across the center.

I love this unique bird's eye perspective of Blair's room. You can really admire how plush and fit-for-royalty her bed is. Now let's get down to the details of working her elegant taste into your college space...

Start out with a dramatic black headboard like Blair's---whether it's wood or upholstered doesn't matter... just make sure it's got feminine curves! A brass-legged side table makes the perfect nightstand, especially with a black-based lamp set on top. Hang a photo of style icon Audrey Hepburn on your wall, and a chandelier from your ceiling if possible. Since you probably can't paint your walls to match Blair's, bring in that lovely shade of blue with long curtain panels and a floral rug. Pull a bench up to the foot of your bed to hold mags and books. Accessorize any basic dresser with an oval mirror, glass lamp, metallic photo frame, mirrored tray, cosmetics, perfume, and lush flowers to get a look similar to Blair's. Bring in a full-length mirror to check out your outfits. And bonus points if you can incorporate a graceful chaise lounge into the space.

Go-To Looks

You know how you have those go-to outfits? When you're digging through your closet for something to wear and just can't decide... Or when you're on a time crunch and don't have time to switch in and out of several ensembles. Up above is my favorite go-to getup for a night out on the town. (I actually sported this Friday night.)
Dark, bootcut jeans because they're always flattering. Camel-colored booties with just a bit of a cowgirl kick to them because I love the hue and they have just the right amount of heel. A form-fitting, black v-neck tee is my ultimate go-to item. A black leather crossbody bag keeps my hands free. And lately I can't stop wearing my pocketwatch-style necklace. Typically a pink lipgloss kinda girl, I resolved to start wearing red. With such bold lips, I keep the rest of my makeup simple: a dusting of bronzer on my cheeks and eyelids, some black eye pencil on the outer half of my top lids, and lots of mascara.

For a causal workday or class, I'm all about the plain white tee. Pairing it with slightly distressed skinny jeans and a soft beige cardigan is my equivalent of sweatpants and a sweatshirt. (I don't dress down much...) When I keep the colors so plain, I'm almost always inclined to grab for my red flats for a pop of color. I usually carry my caramel-brown slouchy bag and wear over-sized pearl studs as far as accessories go. For cosmetics, I stick to my go-to pinks: rosy blush, rose-hued lipstick, some pewter eyeshadow with the slightest tinge of pink, brown eye pencil, and again lots of LashBlast mascara.

Lastly, this is my go-to outfit for those in-between occasions. Not dressy enough for a night on the town. Not casual enough for going to class. I find myself grabbing for these articles of clothing when I'm heading out to dinner or the coffee house. It consists of my black skinny jeans, a plain white tank, and loose gray cardigan. I slip into my new gray biker-style booties and wrap a fun scarf around my neck---likely my bright turquoise one for a burst of color. A charcoal bag keeps things simple and I'll usually skip jewelry altogether. As far as makeup goes, I brush on a bit of rosy blush. I do my eyes up with a bit of purple that makes my green eyes pop, completing it with some black liner and mascara. A little nude-hued lipgloss adds shine.

So now I want to know what your go-to look is for a night out, class, work, or just chilling at the coffee house!

White walls, high ceilings, thick moulding, and hardwood floors... this room had good bones to begin with. Pale blues are brought in with the curtain panels and rug, keeping things cool and airy. A gray sofa with a masculine silhouette takes centerstage, accented with an ampersand and deer pillow. Crisp greenish-gold is scattered throughout the space on accessories and furniture. The dark, modern coffee table boasts a vintage typewriter and stack of old books. Over the fireplace hangs a chalkboard featuring favorite quotes. In one corner, a bold splash of red appears in the form of a velvet wingback chair. In the other corner sits a green desk, charcoal-hued ghost chair, and ladder-style bookshelf. A feminine chandelier tops it all off.

Downton Abbey Fashion Inspiration

Downton Abbey is my latest obsession. (I'm a sucker for historical dramas...) I especially love the Crawley sisters: Mary, Edith, and Sybil. They get to wear the most gorgeous dresses! Their elegant vintage style got me thinking about how to translate a little Downton Abbey glamor into a modern wardrobe. And here's what I came up with:

Above: A frivolous fete calls for dressing to the nines. How can you not swoon over the Crawley sisters' gowns? I tracked down modern dresses that emulate each style. Mary's slinky ivory gown becomes a sexy little silk number. Sybil's embellished blue gown becomes a blue satin shift with a gold necklace that replicates the gown's beading. Edith's grayish taupe gown becomes a jazzy, art-deco dress.

Above: Mary's ladylike dress features nautical stripes and crocheted details around the neckline. Sweet and simple, it's a perfect look for Spring! For a modern take, I added a navy belt to a sailor-inspired frock. Crocheted accents move from the neck down to the toes with a pair of Toms. A floral handbag offsets the stripes. And a pearl necklace and straw hat complete the summery look.

Above: Downton Abbey fashion gets a workplace-worthy update here. For Edith's look, pair a chiffon, floral-printed, black blouse with a black skirt and t-strap heels. A simple gold heart-shaped locket is a lovely accessory. Mary's look is my favorite to transition into the office. Recreate it with a plain white tee, high-waisted gray pencil skirt, mauve cardigan, pearl necklace, and vintage pumps.

Above: I modernized Sybil's beautiful blue dress for a night out on the town. This much-shorter, one-shoulder number is that same shade of sky blue... and its draped, chiffon skirt is flowy just like Sybil's. Cinch the waist with a gold belt and show off art nouveau-esque accessories.

Above: I got a little sidetracked with this one. Lavinia isn't one of the Crawley sisters, but I love this velvet dress she wears. Get a similar look with a long sleeve, forest green wrap dress. Wear dark jade earrings and heels with a hint of velour that pays homage to Lavinia's all-velvet gown. Don't forget a gold-encrusted hairband to top it all off.

Above are three more formal looks for an especially swanky occasion. With Edith, this little black dress features the same black-lace-over-gold effect on the bodice. Sybil's silver-on-top and navy-on-bottom gown has a dead-ringer in this strapless dress. And this long sleeve, lace navy dress possesses all the same elegance as Mary's.

I saved my favorite for last with the above outfit. On Mary's walk with Matthew, I couldn't get over the lovely simplicity of her ensemble---the lacy white blouse and grayish sage skirt. She looks simply stunning. I recreated it as an office-ready outfit.

Mocha Cinnamon Coffee Recipe

Sometimes, I just have a stroke of genius. Read on for a delish coffee drink recipe to make yourself!

If you've checked in every once in a while, you've probably caught on to the fact that I'm a big fan of coffee. Unfortunately, due to hanging out at my favorite cozy coffee shops and working a brief stint as a Starbucks barista... I've also become a bit of a coffee snob. Only to myself. My homemade coffee just doesn't cut it any more. Give me cafe or gas station coffee over my own any day.

Equally unfortunately, coffee shops are expensive. Even if I just stick to my basic coffee with cream and sugar, drinking it several times a week noticeably dents a college budget. So oftentimes, I must settle for making it myself. A few weeks ago when I ran out of my bag of Starbucks Blonde Roast (mmmm!) ground coffee, I found myself on a tight budget. There was no room to splurge on coffee shops or even a bag of the good stuff. So I haphazardly grabbed a bucket of Folger's French Vanilla and went on my way.

Back in the day, I used to drink Folger's all the time. I didn't realize that in all of my coffee shop hours and barista training, I'd passed the point of no return. Folgers? Blech! Now, before I get too far into my rant let me say that I can stomach your basic Folgers original or breakfast blend. But this vanilla stuff is horrid. In the past couple weeks, I've tried time and time again to make a decent cup of coffee. There were many fails, let me tell you.

Last night, when the coffee cravings swept over me... I gave it another try. Since my usual half-n-half (or milk) plus sugar with the vanilla roast made my stomach turn... I knew I'd have to get a little crafty to make something I could actually drink and enjoy. I pleasantly surprised myself! For the first time, I made the vanilla roast taste delicious! Since I'm sure many of you resort to cheap coffee (and since I can only assume this tastes even better with the good stuff) I decided to share my wonderful recipe for you to try.

Here's a little diagram I whipped up.

In your empty coffee mug, scoop some hot cocoa mix (preferably Swiss Miss, yum!) into the bottom. I recommend four or five heaping spoonfuls because the chocolate is what really balances out the vanilla coffee. Add two spoonfuls of sugar on top of that. Then throw in a couple dashes of cinnamon. Stir the powders together, pour the coffee over top, and then add a splash of milk (or half-n-half). Stir it all together. Enjoy! You'll smell the sweet cinnamon as you bring the drink to your lips. And the taste of the mocha will linger after each drink. This would also be heavenly topped off with whipped cream and more cinna-sugar sprinkled on top.

I'm so relieved that this vanilla roast won't go to waste!

Domino Returns | Breaking News

So picture this: 10:00 this morning. Sitting in front of the computer at my new job in magazine customer service. Reading through the magazine industry news announcements. And a familiar, much-beloved, six-letter name jumps out at me.

I gasp. Several co-workers snap to my attention, wondering what in the world is the matter and truly concerned. I'm immediately floating above their heads on cloud nine because Condé Nast is reviving Domino. Yes, I said Domino! And yes, I said revive! As in bring back!

I was a dedicated Domino reader back in the day. When the publication ceased, I died a little inside. When I moved off to college and misplaced my collection of Domino issues, I experienced a panic attack followed by months of moping depression. When I found those glossy beauties packed away at my parents' house, I jumped up and down and up and down and squeaked giddily with excitement.

Seriously, Domino has my heart. When I'm feeling uninspired, I flip through the lovely pages of cool, chic, lovely design. When I've had my heartbroken or fought with the boyfriend, Domino is always there for me with a bowl of ice cream and bag of potato chips. To say I adore Domino is a complete and blasphemous understatement.

I hope that clues you in a little to my utter devotion to this ceased magazine. And hopefully you'll better understand why I'm so ecstatic over the fact that Condé Nast is bringing Domino back with a special edition called Quick Fixes. It'll be available on newstands only from April 17 through July 16. (And then another so-far-unnamed special edition will be released in the fall!)

You know how avid readers stake out bookstores in anticipation of being one of the first to buy a newly released book? (Harry Potter or Twilight, anyone?) Well those vampire-loving teenie-boppers have nothing on me. Rest assured that by the time April 17 rolls around, I'll be the over-caffeinated girl camping out to be the first to get my greedy little fingers on an issue (or two...or, let's be honest... ten) of Domino Quick Fixes.

Hallelujah! Can I get an "Amen!"?

Disclaimer: Yes, I'm aware of the fact that I harbor an unnatural fetish for magazines. Yes, I should be on an episode of TLC's Hoarders. Yes, I refuse to go on that show because I know my glossy little pretties would be the first to go cover-first into the dumpster. I Love Valentines

Cupid-haters, consider yourselves warned. I'm not about to apologize for what I'm going to say... I LOVE Valentine's Day! Always have, always will. Why? Well... 1) I'm biased because my birthday falls the day before and I've associated February 13 and 14 as a two-day celebration of cake and chocolate. 2) I adore pink and red paired together. It should be done more often. But alas, some people cringe at the color combo because it reminds them of Valentine's Day! *sigh*

Most of all, I love Valentine's Day because I've never sunk to the low level of dedicating it only to lovers. For all of you Valentine-bashers who blaspheme February 14th as "Singles' Awareness Day," I'm sad for you. (Disclaimer: I've had my fair share of single Valentine's Days... but they were wonderful days just the same!) Valentine's Day for me is about sharing all the love you have for friends, family, and possibly a significant other. Of course it's best to give that love and appreciation all year round! But it's way more fun to dedicate a whole day to love, too!

Here are some lovely ways to spoil your Valentine with a little extra love this February 14th.

If your Valentine is a boyfriend...

Free: Using whatever you have in your fridge or cupboards, whip up an impromptu dinner for your guy. Make a heart-shaped pizza, delicious pasta, or even breakfast for dinner. (Who doesn't love pancakes for supper?!) Afterward, pop in a movie you both love. Curl up and enjoy a quiet evening together and a break from busy schedules.

Cheap: Between your bf's classes or during his workday, surprise him with his favorite warm beverage. Be it bold, black coffee or a rich lattee or even some hot cocoa with marshmellows, your gift will warm him up as he sips... and your gesture will warm his heart!

Moderate: If he takes you out for a Valentine's dinner, pay for his meal. Or you go off to a movie after dinner, offer to pick up the cost of the movie tickets. Sharing the cost of a date shakes up tradition a little and you both will appreciate the share.

Splurge: So you've been dating a while... maybe you want to get that special someone something special. Opt for something timeless like a nice watch. Or something thoughtful that complements one of his hobbies. For example---a handsome leather journal for the writer, tickets to a concert for the music lover, a jersey for the sports fanatic.

If your Valentine is a friend or family member:

Free: With school, work, and hectic schedules, it's easy to lose touch with your best friend or sister. Set aside Valentine's Day for the special lady in your life. Bake something yummy and tune into HGTV for a cozy, low key girls-night-in flipping through magazines and catching up.

Cheap: Get your group of gal pals together. Hit the store for the biggest box of assorted chocolates you can find. Grab some cheap champagne or wine. Split the cost between the bunch of you. And pop in your favorite chick flicks (with a box of tissues nearby) for a fabulous evening of laughter, tears, and chocolate.

Moderate: Two words: girl date. Dinner and a movie with the girls is always a good time. Get dressed up just for the heck of it. Make dinner together or go out to eat at a favorite restaurant. Catch a flick later on or grab drinks. Girl dates are the best.

Splurge: Two words: spa day. Need I say more?

If your Valentine is you:

Free: Unplug and unwind. Plan ahead so that your Valentine's Day evening is totally free. No homework, no responsibilities, no obligations. Now think about what you've been dying to do but haven't gotten around to. (No chores allowed. That rules out laundry, cleaning, etc.) Perhaps you haven't picked up a novel to read for pleasure forever. Maybe you have a list of diy-projects to do. Or you want to get caught up on the last five episodes of Downton Abbey. Dedicate the whole evening to doing whatever you want to do, guilt-free.

Cheap: Treat yourself to a simple pleasure on the cheap. A small box of chocolates. A cheap bottle of wine. A deliciously frothy coffee drink. A new nail polish. Whatever it is, give yourself permission to spend the $10. Buy it and savor it.

Moderate: Get your hair done. With Spring looming on the horizon (yes, it's coming!) February is an ideal time to perk up your look. On the cheap end, get a cut to freshen up your locks. If you have a few extra bucks to spend, get your hair styled or dyed, too.

Splurge: There are too many ways I could think of splurging on myself! Buy yourself a nice piece of jewelry you've been drooling over for months. Get a complete makeover. Go on a shopping spree. Go on a mini-roadtrip to the next town over to explore the antique stores and clothing boutiques. Treat yourself to a delicious dinner.

There's no reason not to enjoy Valentine's Day to the fullest in all its pink-and-red-and-hearts-all-over glory. With your fabulous friends and loving family, being single is no excuse. Lovely Undergrad will happily be your Valentine!

Serena's Room | Gossip Girl Decor

I'm sure many of you can join in on me with this: Gossip Girl is one of my favorite guilty pleasures. (It's like the only show I actually tweet about while watching!) So I was delighted when several of you lovely readers requested that I feature some GG-inspired decor boards. Let's kick off with Serena!

Upper East Side "It" girl Serena has it all: super model looks, a closet full of designer fashion, lotsa money, and a posh pad to top it all off. As lavish as her bedroom could be, Serena's sense of decor style is refreshingly low key. While the room is full of expensive goods, there's no frill or frou-frou in sight. Her design taste is fuss-free luxury. A sleek, modern credenza stands in place of a dresser. Strewn across its top are sundry girly items: glass bottles, cosmetics, framed pictures, candles. A tall table lamp lights up the wallpaper's spherical flowers, which mimic the headboard's spots. A big print of a close-up, glittery eye hangs above the console.

Creamy neutrals and vintage patterns like damask give the room a classy, refined theme while gilt metallics and unexpected polka dots give the space a youthful kick. The lower half of the wall behind Serena's bed is an over-sized, statement-making headboard. Upholstered in an ivory and gold spotted fabric, the pattern is both classic and playful. Glitzy pillows add shimmer to the sleeping space. Ornate side tables flank the bed, accented with "barely there" glass ghost lamps. To the left, a curvy settee upholstered in teal and gold damask puts on elegant airs. At the foot of the bed, a minimalist bench keeps track of a young woman's favorite things: shoes and magazines.

Here's a close-up look at one of Serena's gorgeous bedside tables. The elaborate gold-on-ivory carving is oh-so-very Versailles. The transparent glass lamp disappears into the polka dot backdrop.

Dying for Serena's effortlessly chic balance of glamor and youth? Here's a Lovely Undergrad take on the space...

Theme: Stick to a mostly neutral color scheme, focusing on creamy ivory and decadent vanilla shades. Use the off-whites all over the room, especially on large surfaces: walls, bedding, curtains. Pale gold curtain panels are ideal. Add a bit of subdued color by using light blue and/or turquoise throughout the room, like Serena did with her lamp and settee. I also threw in this ivory and light blue rug because its dahlia polka dots would be a perfect stand in for Serena's headboard and/or wallpaper. Since you probably won't be able to put up wallpaper in your apartment or dorm, I came up with a creative solution for a backdrop similar to Serena's wallpaper by hanging gold dahlia placemats all over the wall.

Bed: A simple upholstered headboard will most closely resemble Serena's. If you have the time, money, and resources at your disposal, have it upholstered in a fabric similar to her metallic polka dots. Dress the bed in whites and beiges, adding sequined pillows for that perfect pinch of sparkle. (I love these gold spotted pillows since they're so reminiscent of Serena's headboard!) When it comes to the nightstands, the overall idea is more important than finding exact replicas of those ornate side tables. I went with a spindly, gold-legged, glass-topped side table. Accessorize it with your favorite magazines, a metallic picture frame, and a lamp with a clear glass base. At the foot of the bed, place a simple bench with clean lines. Tuck shoes underneath; stack fashion magazines and books on top.

Etc. Furniture: For a sleek credenza like Serena's, check out anywhere from antique stores to Goodwill for Mid-Century Modern consoles and buffets. Prop the top with a turquoise-based lamp, eclectic glass bottles, and picture frames. Then, hang up a fashion-y print as art. While Serena's antique settee is to-die-for, it'd be a rare beauty to track down and take up valuable space in college dwellings. Instead, find a chair with the same feminine feel. Personally, I'd go with a Louis ghost chair because 1) the transparency echoes the glass lamps on Serena's nightstands, and 2) I have an unhealthy obsession with Louis ghost chairs.

Life Schedule Under Construction

Unlimited internet access, cupcakes, and coffee? I couldn't argue with that!

I'm dropping in to apologize for the unusual lapse in posting. My schedule is currently under construction. My prime creative/blogging
times have been replaced with sleepy time. I'm not taking classes this semester due to some personal/financial reasons, but that doesn't make me any less busy! Juggling a new job and some new developments for Lovely Undergrad... my schedule is under construction. I'm still (yes, still!) get settled in at my new apartment---unpacking (cringe), organizing, decorating. I've got some exciting news coming your way relating to Lovely Undergrad. Plus, I've been attempting to maintain what's become a lame excuse for a social life. (You know you're growing up when you'd rather curl up with a spot of tea and the latest episode of Downton Abbey than leave the apartment to do anything.)

But I'm shifting things around and learning to set time aside especially for blogging. (Even if that entails getting up an extra hour earlier in the morning---gasp!) Rest assured that some lovely things are heading your way. What lovely stuff? Well... New television and movie decor boards requested by readers like you! Romantic ramblings-on about Midnight in Paris and my newest Downton Abbey obsession! Mucho inspiring posts! And a very special surprise coming soonly!

Chevron Chic Dining Room on a College Budget

Chevron. I love to love it. And so does Tehrene of Love Twenty. While trolling her blog, the above photo caught my eye as it had hers. "I would love this to be my future dining room," she wrote, but then went on to say that "the rug, let alone anything else in the room, is completely over my budget." Turns out she got her chevron fix by picking up some super lovely pillows at Target. But this dreamy dining room inspired me to create a look for less.

And voila!

My "look for less" version is tailored for unique need college students face when decorating an apartment, including budget restrictions and a shortage of space. I've broken down my How-To for this space with products you can "buy" and projects you can "DIY."

Table

Buy: Ikea's MELLTORP Dining Table in white possesses the the same sleek lines as the parsons table in the inspiration room. But measuring in at about 30 wide by 30 deep, it's a smaller scale version perfect for tight apartment spaces. Plus, the top is melamine. (Say what? Melamine is scratch resistance, moisture proof, and easy to clean.) Oh, and it costs just $49.99.

DIY: If you're a real handy-gal in the garage (or have a dad who is), a parsons table can be built. Otherwise, scavenge garage sales and thrift stores for a simple table that you can makeover with a few coats of white paint.)

Chairs

Buy: While the butterfly chairs in the inspiration room are indeed gorgeous with their feminine curves, a pair of chairs from Ikea might give those butterflies a run for their money. These URBAN Chairs come in that same great shade of robin's egg blue. Lightweight and stackable, they are ideal for moving or just making space in the apartment. And they get bonus points for being suitable for outdoor use as well. It'll cost you $39.99 for one of the URBANs.

DIY: The chairs in the inspiration room have a slightly retro feel. Conduct a search. Thrift stores, antique shops, garage sales, Craigslist... look high and low for a pair of retro chairs of your own. Even if what you find isn't the right color, you can make it work with some paint or re-upholstery. (See Frugal Home Designs make a retro chair feel modern.)

Curtains

Buy: The inspiration room's windows are draped in classic white sheers. What does that mean for us undergrads? Easy peasy! You can buy floor-length white sheers just about anywhere... but it's all about the thrill of the bargain hunt! Sure, Wal-Mart and Target will give you a great deal on panels. But take a look at places like Hobby Lobby, Lowes, and dollar stores where you might snatch these babies up for a mere $3 to $5 a panel.

DIY: Option 1, pick up some sheer white fabric from the local craft store and get sewing. (If you're a seamstress like that.) Option 2, put some old white twin bedsheets to good use. Follow this simple tutorial to convert bedsheets into curtain panels. I'm dying to try it!

Shelves

Buy: Simple floating- and moulding-style shelves can be had nearly anywhere. Start with Target and branch out from there. Be sure not to neglect the hardware stores and craft/hobby stores. Along with the super-cheap curtain panels, killer deals on shelving are also lurking.

DIY: Buy pieces of unfinished moulding that you can stain yourself. (Young House Love built their own floating shelves.)

Pendant

Buy: As college students, we likely don't have the option to swap out ugly apartment lights for gorgeous modern pendant lamps like the one in our inspiration room. But in the off chance that you can (or choose to wholeheartedly surrender your security deposit), the CB2 pendant in my "look for less" room will set you back about $60.

DIY: This totally depends on the type of lighting fixture in your place, but it may be possibe for you to attach a big, plain white lampshade to your ceiling or existing light just to get a similar look. (Jesse from Just Flew the Coop attached a lantern over her ceiling lamp.)

Chevron Rug

Buy: Ooooh, that black and white chevron! It's the bold, sassy, yet refined pattern that really steals the show in the inspiration room. First, search online. Since it's a classic black and white, it won't be as difficult to track down as a more offbeat color combo. I stumbled across this one for a mere $47 on Overstock.com.

DIY: Betcha didn't think I'd have a project for the rug. Welp, here it is. Yes, you can paint chevron onto a plain rug. This is definitely on my to-do-it-yourself list.

Accessories

Buy: Now to accessorize! The inspiration keeps things simple and sweet. Display the favorite magazines in all their glossy glory on the floating/moulding shelves. Frame a small black and white photo in a thick-bordered frame. Hit up the local antique shop or thrift store and you'll surely find a white vase (or ceramic pitcher like the inspiration room's) for under $10. Fill it with pretty pink flowers---fresh if you can!---or some silk/fake ones from a local craft store.

DIY: Make flowers yourself using coffee filters!

We're all on tight college budgets. And even though all of the things in this room can be had at a cheaper-than-the-inspiration price, chances are if you you buy it all you'll still be pushing your budget to the limit. If you have money to spare, invest it in some of the larger pieces. If you need to be more careful with your spending, find the balance between what you buy and what you DIY. If you're living on ramen, you might have to get a little more creative and crafty. But glamorous looks can be had for less!

Chalk It Up... My DIY Coffee Bar Project

Happy Tuesday! I have a DIY project for you! All you need is some old candle jars, chalkboard paint, and your favorite coffee roast. I turned several old candle jars and containers into chalkboard-chic canisters to store ground coffee, tea bags, sugar, creamer, and even syrup. (But this project would be perfect for organizing office supplies or even bathroom items like cotton balls and swabs.)

Snapshots of Simple Pleasures

Above: This is how I spent this past Friday afternoon. I live within walking distance of the coziest little coffee shop, Cafe Milo. I trot down on a regular basis to sink into an antique chair and enjoy a big cup of light roast coffee near the warmth of a fire. It's a lovely place.

When I was little, one of my grandmas gave me this funky piece of costume jewelry. Ornate gold and pink gems frame a really glittery center rectangle. I've probably had this ring for twelve years... and I love as much today as the day I received it. As a girl, I thought it was totally something a princess would wear. Today, I love it for its unique, vintage, costumey feel. It's probably not worth much at all, but to me it's priceless. :)

I'm trying to take more pictures of the little details in life: my simplest pleasures. Hopefully I'll get around to sharing them here on the blog more often.

Valentine's Day Fashion

Blame it on Pinterest, but I'm already in the Valentine's Day mood. Whether you're single, crushing, or involved... there's no excuse for not taking some cues from Cupid when it comes to dressing up in the lovey-dovey spirit. The above fashion board is all about pink. I threw out the bold, garish shade of pink you often see throughout February and replaced it with the perfect blushing hue.
The pale mauve dress with its long lace sleeves, slight A-line skirt, and waist-cinching brown belt would look darling with a pair of over-the-knee boots and pocket-watch necklace A flirty, ruffly pink blouse would look oh-so-flirty with a pair of dark, slimming bootcut jeans---especially with crimson accessories thrown in. Lastly, I couldn't get over this romantic dress, especially with glitzy-toed heels and a classic bag. With blush, go big or go home. Give your face a glowing radiance with natural pink blush. Paint your nails to match ballerina slippers. A light rosy lipstick completes your lovely look.

The color I want to focus on for Valentine's Day is a neutral hue you'll want to eat up: chocolate brown!
