Update on the Family History Fair

I have gotten most of my presentation for Beginning Research and Beginning Genealogy and I am just cleaning it up and animating it.

I now need to make a new Syllabus for Beginning Research and update the Beginning Genealogy Syllabus, so that it does not include so much research.

I will put all three versions online.

If you have any ideas to improve the syllabus, or there is something that you do not understand, let me know!

I have created and prepared a handout for you ladies to begin your Genealogy.

Please also read my other handout on Beginning Genealogy here.

This particular handout is the one I use when I teach at the Family History Fair.

Here is the handout

Beginning Genealogy

1. Write down all the information and that you have about yourself and your family

2. Enter that information into a computer program of your choice-include your sources (even if it is word of mouth)

3. Now you need to choose who you want to know more about.

· Start with the oldest living relative, and give them a phone call, or write a letter, or an e-mail.

· Make sure you write down the questions which you want to know, before you talk to your Family Member.

· Get permission to use a digital voice recorder, from the person you will be recording. Take a digital voice recorder with you, or record your telephone conversation.

4. Enter the voice recording into your computer, in your Genealogy Program with the person you spoke to as the source.

5. Call any other people who might have information on your family, record their conversations too, if possible.

6. When you have gotten as much information as possible from your family members, then you need to determine which ancestor, you want to know more about.

7. Next you need your membership record number and your confirmation date (Temple recommend, or tithing settlement paper)

8. Go to www.new.familysearch.org and register to make an account (if you have any other LDS account, they are all linked, so enter that information)

9. Living people are allowed to be entered into the New Family Search, however they will not appear to anyone except the one entering them.

10. Dead people when entered, will be shown to everyone.

11. If you have a Family History File and you want to upload your work, they ask for you to check to see if you can find the person on New Family Search before you upload your file. (If you are to upload then please limit it to 100 persons.

12. Start with the closest one to you that has died and search for them first. (There is a possibility that once you get a few generations back , you might have Temple Work done on your ancestors, maybe not)

13. If you wish to do the work on the people you have entered, you need to go in one by one and reserve their ordinances, for those people.

a. If you don’t reserve them, anyone can do the Temple Work.

b. Even though we are counseled to wait 110 years before doing ordinances unless we are the closest living relative, some people choose to not follow this counsel.

14. Choose a member of your family you know has died

15. Go to Familysearch.org and enter in your ancestors name, if a match comes up, click on it. If a match does not come up, then enter in another piece of information, such as Death Place.

16. Once you have found a source, make sure you input the source into your Genealogy program, so you know what research you have done.

17. Keep a journal, or blog of research that you have done. Having the information in more than one place is recommended.

a. Computers crash, papers burn, servers go down.

b. Keep a copy of your file out of state.

i. Burn a CD of your file and give it to a family member who is far away.

Decisions

I make decisions every day in my life, just like you. we choose how we wear our hair, or what clothes we will wear. We choose what to eat, how long to sleep, and what to do for the day.

Recently I have had the chance to talk to my friend who informed me a big give-away is going on right now, for a house in a beautiful ski town in Utah.

It would be nice to have a rental home and a vacation home and get 500,000 to take care of taxes and bills on it. You would also get a free car.

Then I read the fine print that says you can take 1,400,000 plus the free car in lieu of the 2 million dollar vacation home.

5 years ago, and even less, I would have taken the vacation home and said that we will pay our debt off with the rental home that we will have in this beautiful place.

Today, knowing what it is like to be in debt, I would have to say that I would take the money and fix up our current house, which was made in 1969 and after paying off our debt, I would put some money away in savings, and CD's so that I would have an actual savings account that saves money.

What would you do if you got a big sum of money? Would you hurry to spend it, would you save some and spend some, or would you save it all?

I am definitely in the middle, I would save some and spend some.

I know I am not meant to win the house or the money, even though I entered the contest.

But I do know that I was meant to learn a huge lesson, which I will put in play during the rest of my life.

Teaching

I am also teaching Beginning New Family Search, that syllabus will have to come at a later date, but I promise you, I am working on it.

There will be two parts to the Beginning New Family Search, which will be the actual site www.new.familysearch.org and the partner site www.familysearch.org.

The new site allows you to keep an online tree if you are a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. If you are not a member the you can go here to be placed on the waiting list to receive an account at www.new.familysearch.org.

The old site allows you to research through indexed records that the Church has made available online to the public for free. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is working on indexing all of it's current holdings so that they can be placed on the World Wide Web for free!

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has the largest Genealogical library in the world and if you want to read about the library in Salt Lake please click here.

More Baking

Ok, so now I am making rolls. (The recipe is not mine to share, so I can not share it right now.)

But this is what they look like.

So why am I showing this to you, if I can't tell you the recipe? The reason is to share with you a recipe for simple pretzel bites. You need to get your own dough, whether you make it, or buy it.

Then you need to go to this site. Get off your butt and bake.

My dough sank to the bottom when I put it in the pan of boiling water. I stirred it and the dough came to the top. I did the 45 second water bath and then I let it dry out on the paper towel. I baked for 15 min and used butter and sea salt, and they were great.

They looked funny, but they tasted really, really good.

I will be making them again.

Baking Today

Last week I bought Bananas thinking I might have 3 left to make bread. I think the kids left me 8, so I got to make a double batch of Banana Bread.
I love this recipe because it tastes really good, and you don't have to use a bread pan.

8 T (l stick) butter at room temp
3/4 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 cup flour
1 t baking soda
1/2 t salt
1 cup whole wheat flour (or white)
3 large ripe bananas mashed
1 t vanilla

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees grease a 9x5x3 pan
2. Cream butter and sugar till light and fluffy
3. Add eggs one at a time
4. Sift all purpose flour, baking soda, and salt together
5. Stir in remaining flour and add to cream mix, mix well
6. Fold in Bananas and vanilla
7. Pour mix into pan, bake 50 to 60 min or until cake tester comes out clean
8. Cool in pan 10 min, then in rack

This is what it looks like.
My husband does not like bananas, but he does like this bread recipe.

Next week, school is out and the kids are going on vacation.

It is time to start baking some treats for the teachers.

Also, my husband has a craft fair at work, so I get double duty. FUN!!!

Really, I like it, and I get to try everything and that is the best part.

If I don't think that I will like it, I just let my kids have the first taste.

Yesterday I started with Reindeer Pops (really easy recipe)

Thanksgiving weekend

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving week and the weekend was wonderful too.
We started out on Wednesday by going down to San Diego.
We learned that Google and Map-Quest aren't really the most direct routes to use.
We went down to Boy Scouts of America using the back way and got plenty turned around. Once we were all done with buying uniform stuff we headed toward Balboa Park. I asked Chris to look up how to get to the science museum. After going down the road about 200 yards, I realized that we were at the San Diego Zoo and I knew exactly where we were. The good news is that I now know how to get back to Boy Scouts in a really easy way.

We went to the Train Museum and they had a Lego Train exibit which was really cool, check it out!

After the Train Museum, we went to In N Out Burger and enjoyed a treat.

On Thursday we went over to my SIL's house and had a wonderful dinner. Then we came to my house for games and movies.
My husband had a nice nap.

On Saturday, we went to Smart and Final and in the evening we watched movies.

On Sunday we made Reindeer and Snowman after coming home from Church.

The only thing I cannot decide is what cake to serve.

I am leaning toward an easy one (the broomsticks), but I found this hard one (the snitch) and I thought I should share.
