North America is home to over 75 different species of cavity nesting birds that seek shelter and security as they start their families. Some of the better known cavity nesters include woodpeckers, purple martins, bluebirds, titmice, wrens, nuthatches and the chickadees. These birds look for natural cavities created where branches break off of trees or perhaps those already created by woodpeckers and other animals. Unfortunately, humans contribute to the limited availability of these natural cavities through construction projects and seemingly innocent removal of fallen trees. The result is fierce competition among the birds that need them most.
Otherwise known as nest boxes, bird houses provide artificial shelter for cavity dwelling birds throughout their annual brooding season. Nestling birds typically spend 16-22 days in the nest - just long enough for the young to gain strength and learn to fly. Bird houses provide protection from rain, heat, cold and even predators. Because access to bird houses is limited to those animals and birds that can fit through the opening, smaller birds instinctively seek the protection afforded by homes with the possible opening.
Your primary consideration for selection of your birdhouse should be the species of bird that you want to attract. This is important because size matters. Most bird houses have openings that range from 1-1/8 inch to 2-1/2 inches. Minor differences in opening size of even 1/8 of an inch can impact the type of bird it attracts. For example, an opening of 1-1/8 inch is ideal for chickadees and wrens, but too small for most titmice and nuthatches which prefer a 1-1/4 inch opening.
Once you have decided what species of bird that you want to attract, you should consider style and budget. Other features that should be considered include mounting, ventilation, drainage and access for cleaning and inspection. Birdhouses can be hung from a tree, mounted on a tree or fence post or some of the larger and more elaborate pieces come ready to mount on a permanent 4x4 post or pedestal. Keep in mind that certain birds prefer homes that are mounted at heights consistent with their natural habitats. All functional birdhouses should be complete with ventilation holes near the top to allow the heat to escape in the summer and have adequate drainage holes in the bottom to allow water to escape. Finally it is important that homes can be accessed for inspection and removal of old nests if they are truly to be used as nest boxes. In the end, you can choose a birdhouse that provides a welcome refuge for our feathered friends and provides you with sheer enjoyment as a truly unique and functional work of art.

1. He or she is always busy
Suddenly, it seems, there are more evening meetings your lover simply must attend, more conferences requiring weekends away, and an endless list of reasons they can't spend as much time with you as you're used to. In fact, you barely ever see them. Has their career suddenly become that much more demanding? If you know some of your boyfriend's or girlfriend's or spouse's colleagues, it is possible to find out, in a subtle way that doesn't sound like you're just checking up on your lover.
At a casual gathering, try a comment about, for example, a particular seminar at a recent conference, or a charity event that your man or your woman has told you they attended, or something that shows some genuine interest in a recent event that, logically, both he or she and the colleague would have attended, and watch for the colleague's reaction, particularly their face and body language. There's less cuddling, or none. You can't remember the last time you hugged. Or kissed. The little things - a glance, a touch in passing, a shared smile or laugh, a compliment, happen less often, or not at all anymore. People just meeting you wouldn't see you as a couple, because you no longer seem to be connected.
10. Less Sex
Or none at all. This is the ultimate test that your lover is drifting away - they no longer want sex, at least not with you. There are many possible explanations, including a health condition, job stress, aging, or the one you may actually be fearing, that they are cheating on you.

A Wine Lover's Weekly Review Of $10 Wines - A Languedoc, France Rose

By now many people know that the Languedoc region of southwestern France can be a fine area for relatively inexpensive wine. Can be. Today's offering comes from a family whose history and Chateau dates back to 1620. This Chateau, inspired by Versailles, was extended in 1670 by the same architect who built the Orangery at the big V, if you are into that sort of thing. This rosé, 50% Cinsault, 20% Merlot, 15% Syrah, and 15% Grenache comes from one of Vignobles Lorgeril's seven vineyards. It carried the lowly Vin de Pays D'Oc French wine appellation. A lot of producers offer wine tastings, how many can organize a wedding in simili-Versailles? And you're only about 4 miles (6 kilometers) from the fortified city of Carcassone, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The companion wine is a fairly inexpensive Chilean organic rosé.

L'Orangeraie Vin de Pays D'Oc 2011 12.5% alcohol about $10
Let's start with the marketing materials. "Tasting Note: Salmon pink color; soft floral, raspberry, strawberry, and citrus aromas with a mineral note; medium body, dry, berry and citrus flavors, moderate acidity and clean finish. Serving Suggestion: Serve with shrimp and pasta or lobster salad." And now for my review.
At the first sips this wine was quite sweet and refreshing providing acidity and little fruit. My first meal centered on an omelet enlivened by basil, thyme, crushed chili peppers, and processed American cheese, which rounded the libation's acidity and provided a bit of strawberries. Steamed broccoli rendered the drink metallic, I'm thinking bronze, and darkened the strawberries. A Turkish salad composed of sweet pimento, tomato paste, dried parsley, hot peppers, vinegar, and spices proved too strong for our Languedoc friend. A strawberry frozen yoghurt accented the liquid's acidity and sensation of metal. The second dessert was a vanilla pizzelle, an Italian waffle cookie and in response the rosé tasted burnt, lots of burnt.
My next meal centered on a store-bought chicken pot pie. My glass responded with crisp acidity, strawberry, and citrus. Adding a generous amount of Chinese hot chili sauce to the dish intensified this drink's acidity as its fruit declined. Fresh blueberries rendered the wine wispy. Swiss dark chocolate with orange flavor and almonds sweetened and lightened the liquid, In fact it almost disappeared.
The closing meal started with Japanese rice crackers. In response little Versailles offered bracing acidity and not much else. Then came a boxed Baked Ziti Siciliano that I doused with grated Parmesan cheese. The liquid was somewhat sweet with very little fruit. Paired with fresh strawberries, the wine was a bit metallic and not much else.
Final verdict. I will pass on this one.
