Seems like its that time for our monthly band podcast! Ryan and Anji bring you a final update (*crossing fingers*) on the noisy neighbor’s construction project and getting back into the studio to record again. Lots of talk about Lovespirals’ new song, “One Of Those Days,” plus a preview of it at the end of the show. Ryan describes his new Howie pedal and how it mimicks a Dumble amp sound which leads into to a conversation about various studio upgrades the band have made this year. They also discuss the their recent quest for an outside recording space, share the religious experience they had at the final Clapton & Winwood show at the Hollywood Bowl, mention their excitement at going to see Doyle Bramhall II with the Arc Angels this week, and talk about participating in the Meals For Seals sponorship program at the Pacific Marine Mammal Center.

Lovespirals are extremely excited to announce the long awaited launch of their brand new site design! Ryan and Anji give you a rundown of the history of their website and the various changes it has gone through over the years. They fill you in on the critical decisions they made in redesigning and upgrading their decade old site. Lots of geek talk including much discussion of WordPress including themes, widgets, social media integration and more. You might be surprised by the complex process it is to make a site that looks as simple as possible - LOL! Lovespirals Own Podsafe Downtempo Chart

Pleased to note that Lovespirals are still doing quite well on the Podsafe Music Network Downtempo chart. At present, the band own the top 3 spots, plus the number 8 spot. Long time fan favorite, “Love Survives,” from the 2005 album, Free & Easy, is the top podcaster pick, followed by the ever-popular Bitstream Dream remix of “Walk Away” (we really do need to release that Walk Away EP one day…), plus both original mixes of Long Way From Home singles, “Motherless Child” and “This Truth” from 2007. Quite surprised its the not the remixes of those singles, honestly! Band vocalist, Anji Bee, currently holds the #7 position in Downtempo and #2 on the Trip Hop chart, both for collaborations with the now-defunct Canadian-based project, Bitstream Dream.

On a side note, gotta give some love to Macedonia of Radio BSOTS for his kind comment:

Somewhere in the podosphere, someone is keeping an all-time Podsafe Music chart topper list. I would like to think that Lovespirals is somewhere within the Top 30, if not the Top Ten. Personal faves include “Love Survives” and “Walk Away (Bitstream Dream Remix)”.

This Truth Tops Dance Charts

Hot new UK dance music label, Loverush Digital, is about to drop a “Damien.S VS Lovespirals” branded set of remixes of our single, “This Truth,” on February 9th. UK radio and club DJs, however, have already been spinning advanced copies the past few weeks. To our delight, the EP has been blazing up various club charts!

DMC is currently listing “This Truth” at #4 on the UK Club Chart and the World House Chart, #6 on the Club 2009 Test Chart, #10 for the UK Chart, World Commerical Chart, and World Chart plus #16 on the UK Monthly Chart and #18 on the World Monthly Chart.

We’re going up against some pretty steep competition from the likes of Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson, and being a spot ahead of “Single Ladies” on the UK Club is just insane and surreal…

Support for the track has been great and we’re excited to be played on shows and stations including Housesssions with Denny Dowd on Juice FM, PH Factor on Energy FM, Club Control with DJ Confusion, and Twilight on Pulse. Reactions have been fantastic, as well. DJs are reporting lots of dancefloor love and even requests!

This has created one of the biggest buzzes on the floors I’ve seen in ages. Its an enormous winner and packs the floors everytime without fail. Superb mix package. Top stuff all round!

DJ Crispian Aldis (Elemental, Havanah, Paradise) 10/10
This is good and is causing quite a stir in my sets. Loads of fab mixes to choose from. Top track, top label. I can see big things for Loverush in 2009.

Beaker (Berties, Bunters, Divas, Red Square) 9/10
I love the feel to this track, she has such a haunting voice. You can’t help but hear it. It’s such a smooth chill out dance track that works really well.

Free Anji Bee Ringtone Set

Just in time for the holidays; the gift of free Anji Bee ringtones! I met up with MacMost vidcast host, producer and blogger, Gary Rosenzweig, at the New Media Expo earlier this year and we got to talking about music. I was tickled when he said he’d like to feature me as the first in a series of podsafe musicians for his popular MacMost Ringtone collection.

It was fun creating loops of songs from my musical catalog in various electronica genres. I made a mix of ambient vocal passages, lyrical snippets and spoken word from my collaborations with Bitstream Dream, Chukimai, Kou Chou Ching, The Grooveblaster, Lovespirals, Moosefrog, Snoblind, and War-N of Hungry Lucy. Los Angeles artist Anji Bee, known for her smooth vocals and music podcasts, can now be heard whenever someone calls you on your iPhone. She is featured on the latest set of ringtones from MacMost.com, the Mac news, tutorial and iPhone content Web site.

MacMost began providing free iPhone ringtones earlier in 2008 as an alternative to pay-per-song downloads at the iTunes music store or illegal music downloads elsewhere. There are now 15 sets of ringtones in the MacMost collection. They feature everything from holiday sounds to short, original musical creations.

“One of the ideas we had for the free ringtones was to use them to promote artists,” said Rosenzweig. “We knew Anji Bee from her work as a podcaster and thought it would be perfect to begin with her.”

The Anji Bee Ringtone Set features sections of Anji’s work with various other artists, as well as her podcast theme and vocal recorded specifically for the ringtone set.

2008 marks the 10 year anniversary of the creative union of musician/producer, Ryan Lum, and vocalist/lyricist, Anji Bee — known to the world collectively as Lovespirals. What better way to celebrate than with a clutch of amazing remixes of their single, “This Truth,” about that decade long coupling? As eternal as Lovespirals may seem to their hardcore fanbase– those who faithfully follow the band’s podcast and blog, particularly those who fell in love with the music via Anji’s electronica and worldbeat podcast and vidcast, The Chillcast — they have a secret past… The band originally began in 1991 as the darlings of the darkwave scene on Projekt Records, under the extended name of Love Spirals Downwards. By 1998, Ryan had evolved his previously more acoustic based sound into a genre bending electronica one - and was rewarded by having popular prime time show, Dawson’s Creek, feature the track “Psyche” on a season premier episode that is still in worldwide rotation. Lovespirals ‘This Truth EP’ on sale at iTunes & Amazon

Lovespirals recently collaborated with loop producers, Peace Love Productions, on what turned out to be a very fruitful remix competition. As part of the contest, the band decided to release a digital “EP” of some of their favorite productions. The 9 unique remixes of this 2nd single from Lovespirals’ 3rd album, Long Way From Home, hail from an international group of producers who have all put their own unique stamp on this slightly retro-soul inflected tune. From sultry downtempo to upbeat trance, each mix puts a different twist on Anji Bee’s heartfelt, soulful vocals. Many of the mixes cleverly include Ryan Lum’s bluesy electric guitar leads, as well, lending an intriguing counterpoint to the mostly dance oriented mixes. Remixers include the contest winner, Pomatic, and runner-up, Kambronn, plus The Grooveblaster (whom Anji has just collaborated with on his upcoming 2nd album), hEADaCHE, Lthrboots, TT&Yosh, donOesterby, and very special remix by fellow Projekt artist, Soul Whirling Somewhere. “Hand in Hand” #1 on Below Zero Radio Charts

It seems that Lovespirals’ 2005 single, “Hand in Hand,” from sophomore album, Free & Easy, has found a new audience on the Below Zero radio show. The band are currently featured on the front page of the official show site with a very nice writeup. Apparently the track has been steadily climbing their charts over the past month, since DJ Mason Rothert discovered and dusted off this “timeless gem,” as they so generously called it.

As an interesting sidenote, “Hand in Hand” was originally recorded as an extended Jazz Step Drum n Bass track in 1999, making it the second song ever produced by Lovespirals. It was first pressed to acetate for Ryan’s DJ sets, then uploaded to mp3.com, and eventually included on the digital-only Ecstatic EP in 2001. This early mix was featured in an official Mp3.com Best Song of the Week contest and was included on the Chill Out Lounge 2 compilation alongside D&B master, LTJ Bukem. The Ecstatic EP itself was spotlighted as a Hot Pick on mp3.com (”for fans of Good Looking Records“), and listed in StarVox’s Top 10 of 2001, hailing it’s “tasty illbient and Trip Hop influenced grooves” as a “harbinger of Goth’s next Big Thing.”

You can download and compare both versions of “Hand in Hand” from Lovespirals’ Amie Street store. For CD purists, pick up a copy of Free & Easy from the band store to have it autographed by Ryan and Anji just for you!

Joe of drunkrockers.com caught a few shots of the band hanging out at Club Violaine for the big 5th Year Anniversary party featuring Ryan and Rebecca Coseboom’s Los Angeles debut as Stripmall Architecture. (The duo are best known as Halou…)

It was a really great show and it was good to catch up with friends, like Nick Marshall, formerly of The Von Trapps (pictured here with Ryan). You can see the full set of photos from the show in the DrunkRockers Violaine Archive.

Gmail borked today so we thought we’d get off our butts and record a podcast during the downtime! Ryan and Anji have been distracted by the new iPod 3G, checking out the music apps, making ringtones, and installing the podcasters iKit to make the podcast easily streamable from your iPod (or iPod Touch). Still, they’ve continued working on music and share a clip and behind the music story of their latest song in progress. The band also chat about Geoff Smith’s ringtone service, Last.FM paying royalties for song streaming, and meeting Brad of The National Pool in WOW. And, of course, they sneak in one more mention of Hungry Lucy, in particular, their song “Storm.” Just realized that, though we announce this as episode #54, technically it’s #55 because of the Lovespiralsgasms episode - shoot!

In case you didn’t hear the band’s 1 hour guest spot on Auralgasms Radio last night, don’t cry! While you did miss out on a fun chat session in the Auralgasms chatroom with Lovespirals at least you can hear a pristine archival copy of the show. Ryan and Anji chat between each song, giving not only track information, but a little insight into the music and musicians involved. People often tell us our music would be great in a movie soundtrack. Well, here’s your chance to help us achieve that dream! Music site, StereoFame, is holding a contest for artists to have a song included on the soundtrack of the upcoming film, Like Dandelion Dust, with full screen credits plus attendance at the film’s premier here is Los Angeles. Lovespirals have been on many cable and television shows, but we have yet to make it into a Hollywood film. Maybe this could be the first? This week’s “indie edition” of the award-winning Coverville podcast includes Lovespirals’ rendition of Pink Floyd’s “Welcome to the Machine.” This track was recorded in 2006 for a fan-created tribute compilation called NPF Tribute Vol. 2: The Return of the Sons of Neptune available as a free download from the Neptune Pink Floyd site. Ryan and Anji of Lovespirals will guest DJ the “Yourgasms” show for Auralgasms Radio on Monday, June 30th, 2008. The band will present an hour long set of song by Lovespirals, Love Spirals Downwards, and recent projects by past and present band vocalists Suzanne Perry (Melodyguild), Jennifer Ryan Wilde (Liquid State), and Anji Bee (Chandeen). The band will premier a very special Soul Whirling Somewhere remix produced for Lovespirals’ upcoming This Truth EP featuring remixes from their recent PLP Remix Contest. Tune in via iTunes, WinAmp, Real Audio Player, or Windows Media Player. The Lovespiralsgasms show will air LIVE from 10 to 11 pm EST.
