Lovespirals ‘Feel So Good EP’ Out Now

Lovespirals have just released a 40 minute, 9-track extended single of “Feel So Good,” from their 2010 album, Future Past. Last December, Sony Acid Planet held a remix contest for Lovespirals’ funky, Pink Floyd-esque, retro electro-rock tune, and over 40 producers put their own unique stamp on the original track. The Feel So Good EP features the very best of the bunch.

There’s the slinky trip hop grooves of Yumenomado’s grand prize winning “Film Noir Mix” and Noizz Factor’s jazzy “Glamour Mix,” both of which have a decidedly organic feel. Or check out the more electronic oriented mixes by DJ Chris and National Pool, who rely more on loops and classic drum machine patterns. If you’re into heavy beats, then the Electer and 7 Day Visa mixes should fit the bill. Def Men Walking took the song in a completely different direction with the addition of MC work and an old school Manchester feel. And then there’s Jack Ketch’s “Peckaries Parts 1, 2 & 3” which takes the song’s most Floydian elements and constructs an ode to the classic rock band that David Gilmour himself would likely chuckle over.

Anji Bee‘s soulful vocals hold the release together with their delicate balance of earthy sensuality and otherworldly ethereality, with each mix playing up different aspects. While some producers left the arrangement and vocal sound nearly untouched from Ryan Lum’s original mix, others played with sampling or pitch to use the voice more as a musical element.

This is a digital-only release available on most major online music stores, but you can pick up the Feel So Good EP for just 99¢ directly from the Lovespirals Webstore.

Lovespirals Contribute To Falling You CD

The 2-time NAR Lifestyle Music Award winning musical project, Falling You, just released a new album entitled, Adore. Enigmatic band founder and producer, John Michael Zorko, has long worked with a revolving cast of talented and varied female vocalists including Victoria Lloyd (of Claire Voyant and Mono Chrome), Dru Allen (of Mirabilis and This Ascension), Erica Mulkey (AKA Unwoman), Shikhee (of Android Lust), and Love Spirals Downwards‘ own Suzanne Perry.

In her first appearance with Falling You, Lovespirals’ vocalist, Anji Bee, contributes lyrics and vocals to the ambient opening track, “Blessed,” penned about her relationship with bandmate, Ryan Lum, who engineered and recorded her vocal tracks for this long distance musical collaboration. Friend of Lovespirals and Falling You, Ken Lee (of Eleven Shadows), mixed and mastered the track (and indeed, the whole album) alongside Zorko at his Blueberry Buddha Recording Studios.

Lum’s former bandmate, Suzanne Perry, contributed lyrics and vocals to the track, “Champagne,” which follows Bee’s cut on the album. With its summery dream pop feel, Perry’s collaboration brings to mind her work with Melodyguild. Perry’s vocals were engineered and recorded by Melodyguild bandmate, Cris Miller (of Silver Screen). Perry had previously been featured on Falling You’s 2006 album, Human, and 2008 album, Faith.

Another highlight of the album is closing track, “Alchemy,” featuring Kirsty Hawkshaw. Famous for her work with Opus II, BT, Tiesto, and Delerium, Hawkshaw has a long and impressive list of dance music credits to her name. Her breathy voice and high harmonies add a lovely depth and focus to Zorko’s light-as-air beats and textures.

Though known for his melancholic mix of ambient textures and ethereal vocals, Zorko wanted to “explore a more optimistic side of emotional music and this gift called life.” To this end, Zorko employed liberal use of heavy, distorted, electric guitar in the vein of classic 90′s shoegazer acts like My Bloody Valentine and Ride, which may surprise his long time listeners!

Lovespirals Guest on New Karmacoda CD

San Francisco band, Karmacoda, invited Lovespirals to collaborate with them on music for their upcoming 4th album, Eternal. While the album is due out in August, the two songs featuring Anji and Ryan are out now. [8/2/2011 update: Eternal is out now on iTunes]

“Love Will Turn Your Head Around” features vocals and lyrics by Anji Bee, as well as singer/songwriter, Beth Hirsch (best known for her work on Air’s Moon Safari, as well as songs from the Crash and Thomas Crown Affair soundtracks). Released in April, the Love Will Turn Your Head Around Single contains both the 6 and half minute album mix plus a shortened radio edit, which begins with Anji’s main vocal line. The single debuted at #3 on the Below Zero Top 10 chart for April 17th, and has been featured on the Pure Bliss Vocals site, Dave’s Lounge, Properly Chilled, SomaFM’s Lush station, Kimberly Wilson’s Tranquility du Jour, The Mothpod, Expand Your Musical Horizons, and of course, The Chillcast, where is was first premiered.

The Epic Single was just released this week and had its world premier on The Chillcast Episode #275. “Epic” includes guitar work by Ryan Lum, as well as Rhodes piano by Eamonn Flynn of SF duo, Under. In addition to the original album mix and reprise mix of “Epic,” the single includes an upbeat dance remix by Andy Sybilrud of SF electronica act, Return To Mono. Karmacoda frontwoman, Heather Pierce, has said “Epic” is her “favorite song” and it will likely be yours, too, once you hear her sultry siren’s call on this jazzy trip hop torch song.

As long time fans and friends of Karmacoda, Lovespirals were honored to be included in the creative process of this very talented band. Chillin’ with Lovespirals #83

After podfading for 3 months, Ryan and Anji return to the podcast to fill you in on everything the band has been up to recently. The duo realized that some major life changes and events have taken up a lot of their usual creative time, including having air conditioning installed in both home studios, upgrading WordPress on the band website and hunting down various resulting issues, planting and maintaining a fairly extensive organic home garden, and taking care of Monster the Cat after a sudden turn in his health. The busy duo also found time to take a few trips to see friends and attend concerts, and still was able to work on a new series of songs. Plus Anji had several new collaborations released, created a video for “Try To Forget,” did an interview with MusicTap, and more. Listen in for all the details and hear an intimate demo of Lovespirals most recent song in progress at the close of the show.

Second Life Film Festival Features Lovespirals

A beautiful machinima video for Lovespirals’ song “Empty Universe” created by Japanese Second Life artist, Takashi Yagi (known as “Hiroaki Nirvana” in-game) has been selected for the “SL Machinima Festival 2011 Summer” held by the Cinema Union. 10 machinima films will be shown at 10 Second Life virtual theaters from July 16th to August 7th. This event is free to attend and Second Life is free to join. The photo, left, is a screen capture of Anji — known as “Anji Riel” in-game — checking out the event poster at the Cinema Union Theater. She plans to attend the opening day of the film festival; keep an eye out for more details on Lovespirals’ Facebook page.

Anji Bee Interview on MusicTap

Matt Rowe of MusicTap recently interviewed Anji Bee for a feature on the newly revamped music site. Entitled, Quality Time With Anji Bee of Lovespirals and Chillcast, the piece goes into some depth about Anji’s thoughts on the current state of music while looking into the origins of her Chillcuts Digital label, the creation of her new The Chillcast with Anji Bee: 5 Years of Chillin’ compilation, and how she selects music for her weekly podcast, The Chillcast with Anji Bee.

Matt has been a long time supporter of Anji’s band, Lovespirals. He featured the duo in 2006 with his MusicTap piece, Honey and Cool Jazz ‘n’ Rock: An Interview with Ryan Lum and Anji Bee of Lovespirals.

Here’s just an excerpt from the interview:

Music has gone through so many changes over the decades. Do you feel that this generation of music provides enough in styles to help those caught in a decade of preference?
First of all, what people need to realize is that there is a whole world of music that is not being played on the radio or TV. I get all the music I can handle and then some strictly from the Internet. And the variety of music available on the Internet is more vast that you can even imagine. Its truly staggering how much great music is out there when you start searching for it.

What do you look for in a band that sends music across your desk? What do you listen for?
The music needs to strike certain chords for me; I want to feel it in my gut. It could be a tear jerking lyric/vocal, or it could be a booty-shaking bassline/groove. It could be a gorgeous melody played on keyboard or guitar, or an amazing vocal harmony. It could simply be a really sweet string pad or a sitar hook — who knows? But I think there’s generally an element of authenticity in expression that I’m seeking. That’s what is wholly missing in the pop music industry. I want to feel what the artist was feeling when they were creating the song. I need to be drawn into that little world and feel immersed in it. Hearing a really sincere song is a bit like falling in love for me. Obviously not every song on the show can have that strong of an impact on me, but the more of them I can find and string together for a set, the better the show is.

What needs to change as we move forward into an uncharted world of music?
From my perspective, I’d say what needs to change is the perception of music listeners. The major labels have been attempting to convince people that the only music of importance is the stuff that they push down our throats via their multi-media corporate conglomerates. They’d like everyone to believe that all independent music on the Internet is just crap created by half-assed noobs playing around with free software. But that is simply not the case at all. If you put some time into music discovery online, you’ll find a whole new world of incredible music just waiting for you!

Lovespirals vocalist, Anji Bee, guest hosted a one hour set on the radio show, Properly Chilled, last weekend. The show airs on 101.5 FM WXGR in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, every Saturday from 6-8 pm, and streams live worldwide via http://www.wxgrfm.org. Once again, she used personal footage taken while the duo enjoyed some downtime at the beach, but you’d never guess it! We are quite excited to share some brand new music with you! “Try to Forget ” — the first new song to be released by Lovespirals since their January 2010 album, Future Past — is featured on the brand new 5 Years of Chillin’ compilation. This 1 hour collection of chilled tunes celebrates the 5 year anniversary of The Chillcast With Anji Bee music podcast. In addition to the new Lovespirals track, this compilation also features the debut of Anji Bee’s new song, “Put Some Music On,” produced by Ryan Lum of Lovespirals.

Lovespirals’ pals and Chillcast regulars, MoShang, Chill Factor-5 and 7 Day Visa, also contributed new unreleased tracks to this compilation. Anji and Ryan of Lovespirals have selected the Grand Prize winner and Honorable Mention of the Sony ACIDplanet Remix Contest for “Feel So Good”! We know that 40 some producers have been anxiously awaiting our decision since December 28, while we’ve been sorting through all of their entries. Turns out there were several really solid mixes and plenty of great musical ideas! Once again, we thought we’d make our winner’s announcement with a podcast, so we could share a bunch of our faves with the fans and give the producers our thoughts on their tracks. The remixes are presented in no particular order, aside from the winner and runner-up; the Grand Prize Winner is presented first and the Honorable Mention is presented last. Anji Bee Releases Holiday Single

“Happy Holidays” is the first all-original holiday song released by Lovespirals vocalist/lyricist, Anji Bee. Co-written with Lovespirals partner, Ryan Lum, “Happy Holidays” is a deceptively bittersweet pop nugget filled with heartugging disco-infused violins, funky bass and wah-wah guitar, with a relaxed house beat and a hint of cool wintry nights wafting through. Bee’s warm, enveloping vocals pleasantly recall Tracey Thorn (of Everything But The Girl) and Karen Carpenter with their laid back yet passionate delivery and personal holiday message.

Back in 2008 and 2009 when Lovespirals were creating their 4th album, Future Past, the duo captured some of those behind-the-scenes moments on various video formats. Including intimate clips of them during the songwriting, recording, and production process — as well as time spent at various beaches in their native Southern California to recharge their creative batteries — this video montage gives fans an excellent look into the lives of indie musicians, Ryan Lum and Anji Bee. Making this video extra special is that it’s set to the band’s favorite song from the album, “Believe.” All video footage was shot by Anji and Ryan, and edited together by Anji.

Lovespirals Video for Insignificant

We finally made some time to get back to the special place that inspired our final recording and production sessions for Future Past. This is a video of just one of the magnificent sunsets we witnessed while camping on the rugged back side of Catalina Island. Just like our video for “Home,” it was shot on a Flip MinoHD Video Camera and edited in Final Cut Express to add the music and titles. We actually did listen to Future Past on the 3rd night, which was a really powerful experience. It was so cool to hear the music in the place that inspired it, playing out loud in that majestic, surreal beauty. By the way, we were listening on an Apple iPad using iHome iHM60 Rechargeable Mini Speakers, which turned out to be really cool for camping. We used the same setup to play movies in our tent after dark. I’m sure we’ll tell you all about that on our next Chillin’ with Lovespirals podcast! I have to say that this video doesn’t even begin to do justice to the breathtaking view up on this ridge, but it does give you some idea. Enjoy!

National Public Radio is in the midst of a radio series called, “Hey Ladies: Being A Musician Today,” using research gathered from questionnaires answered by hundreds of women working as musicians and/or vocalists today. Additionally, they are publishing solid articles on their music blog, The Record: Music News from NPR. In the latest installment, “Pop Star Pomp, Real World Circumstance“, writer Frankie Kelly includes a quote by yours truly:

But some say they’re annoyed by what they see as attention-grabbing antics. Do pop stars’ constructions (be they costumes or stage sets) put pressure on less well-funded women musicians to be outrageous, to get more naked or cross more lines just to get noticed?

Anji Bee, Lovespirals: From my perspective, the most important thing is to develop a strong internet presence that includes quality audio, video, and photos. The more professional you come across, the more likely people are to take you seriously. I personally wouldn’t rely on gimmicks to get attention, but that seems to be working out for Lady Gaga, so who am I to say anything against it?

For the record, the question I was answering was: “What advice would you give to a woman musician just starting out?” You can read all my responses to the NPR Hey Ladies questionnaire.

This is a great series which includes many fantastic female artists who gave much more interesting answers than I did in my questionnaire, and I highly recommend you check it out!

Lovespirals will return to San Francisco for what is sure to be another great night at Harlot on July 9th, 2010. Once again, Anji will join Karmacoda for their amazing rendition of “Motherless Child” from Lovespirals’ 2007 Motherless Child EP, as well as backing vocals on one or two of the band’s original songs.
