If you suffer from hypertension and you don’t know how to lower blood pressure you are at risk of a number of related conditions such as stroke, heart attacks and coronary disease. Here is Wikipedia’s definition:

High blood pressure, sometimes called arterial hypertension, is a chronic medical condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries is elevated. This requires the heart to work harder than normal to circulate blood through the blood vessels. Blood pressure is summarised by two measurements, systolic and diastolic, which depend on whether the heart muscle is contracting (systole) or relaxed between beats (diastole). Normal blood pressure at rest is within the range of 100-140mmHg systolic (top reading) and 60-90mmHg diastolic (bottom reading). High blood pressure is said to be present if it is persistently at or above 140/90 mmHg. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypertension

But it isn’t hard to lower your blood pressure and the benefits you will get if you do are well worth the minor inconvenience.

How to Lower Blood Pressure – Stop Smoking

This is the easiest thing to say and one of the most difficult to do. I stopped smoking around 15 years ago – to be honest, I can’t rem ember exactly how long – and I have never smoked since. Apart from the health benefits, the cost has risen steadily due to taxation and I doubt I could afford to smoke any more even if I wanted to.

It is really a question of willpower and habit; once you can convince yourself that this is what you WANT to do it is plain sailing. Some people rely on patches or other medication to help but really it comes down to your own motivation to stop.

How to Lower Blood Pressure – Change your Diet

Again, this can be easier said than done, but if you try to reduce the amount of animal fats you consume you can’t go far wrong. Eat fruit and vegetables regularly instead of fries and burgers, and keep you alcohol consumption to a moderat level – you know what is right for you. Eat rolled oats every day for a guaranteed result. A bowl of porridge really does work, and as a side effect, you will find that you start to lose weight AND lower your cholesterol at the same time. Win-Win situation!

Relaxation helps you Lower Your Blood pressure

It is true, if you can start to relax for a set period every day you will find your blood pressure start to fall. On the other hand, stress is a recognised contributor to high blood pressure and so should be avoided if possible. Sometimes breathing is all it takes – you know the expression “take a deep breath” when you are uptight? It is actually based on fact, so try it out.

Exercise is a big benefit to Lowering High Blood Pressure

Once again, you probably already know this, but really – if you take a little exercise every day, you will see your blood pressure drop and feel so much better for it. You don’t have to go crazy either; sometimes a daily walk or an hours gentle stretching will be enough. Yoga is really good for this, but if you decide to try it I beg you to join a recognized class – don’t just buy a DVD in the hope that it will motivate you. In my experience, it won’t and it is all too easy to slip back again.

Whatever you decide to do, just do something and you will have acknowledged that you need to – the rest is then up to you.

Good luck:)

A low-fat diet plan can help you try to keep a healthy weight, and this will certainly help to keep your blood pressure down. Consuming meals that are low in saturated fat can also help you maintain a lower level of cholesterol in your blood.

Excessive cholesterol can easily increase your risk of heart disease and stroke, so if you have higher blood pressure it is critical to keep your cholesterol levels as low as possible.

Kinds of fat in a low-fat diet

The sort of fat that you consume is also critical as some sorts of fats are more likely to raise your cholesterol levels than others. Certain types of fat will help to decrease it, and you need fat in your body to remain healthy.

Avoid eating too much saturated fat, as this will raise your cholesterol. It is typically found in red meats, butter, palm oil or ghee – in fact in most animal fats.

On the other hand, polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats will certainly help to reduce your cholesterol levels. They can easily be found in olive oil, rapeseed oil or sunflower oil, but although they are beneficial in term of lowering cholesterol, they will still make you gain weight if you eat too much of them.

Ways to eliminate the fat in your low-fat diet

By reading the food label, you can easily see if a product contains low, medium or higher quantities of fat:

Low – Less than 3g overall fat or 1g saturated fat for each 100g of meals – These foods are a good choice.

Medium – Between 3-20g overall fat or 1-5g saturated fat each 100g of meals – Safe to eat occasionally.

High – More than 20g total fat or 5g saturated fat each 100g of food – Avoid these totally.

Here is a short report of the Mediterranean Low-fat Diet:

While there are many variations of the Mediterranean diet, its primary hallmark is whole, minimally processed foods.

Clearly, the emphasis on fresh vegetables, nuts and fats like olive oil makes it far more healthful than the standard American diet which is very high in processed foods. Sadly, our government has been pushing a low-fat diet recommendation that has been causing death and disease for decades.

The Right Fats Can Cut Heart Disease Risk by Nearly One-Third

The Spanish trial, which included nearly 7,450 volunteers between the ages of 55 and 80, began in 2003 and was stopped early for ethical reasons, in 2011, as the control group was deemed to be at a dangerous disadvantage. The participants had all been diagnosed with high risk of cardiovascular disease, but were asymptomatic at the outset of the study. Participants were followed for a median of 4.8 years.

The volunteers were randomly divided into three groups (two intervention groups and one control):

Mediterranean diet rich in fresh vegetables, seafood, mono-unsaturated fats, supplemented with 30 grams of nuts per day (15 grams walnuts, 7.5 grams almonds, and 7.5 grams hazelnuts)

Mediterranean diet (as above) supplemented with 50 ml of virgin olive oil per day instead of nuts

Low-fat diet (control)

There were no calorie restrictions for any of the groups, nor was physical activity promoted or required. Compliance with olive oil and nut consumption was tested via blood and urine analysis. The primary end point was a composite of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death from cardiovascular causes. Secondary end points were stroke, myocardial infarction, death from cardiovascular causes, and death from any cause.

Remarkably, in less than five years, the two intervention groups achieved a 30 percent relative risk reduction for cardiovascular disease, and stroke reduction was an impressive 49 percent.

When your children are on the go all the time it is easy to give them what they want when it comes to meals, but since all they usually want is junk food because its quick and tasty, finding a lower cholesterol diet for kids can be tricky. But why bother?

Low cholesterol diet for children

The straightforward fact concerning children’s food preferences is that most of them do not like to eat meals that are healthy and balanced. They would rather eat something quick and tasty like a burger so they can get back to playing as fast as possible. However, there are some healthy things you can easily do that can have your kid consuming healthy and balanced meals without them realizing it. If your child does not like to eat bacon and eggs at breakfast, why not offer your him or her a yoghurt or a handful of Cheerios and a cheese string?

It may not be a “regular” morning meal but the objective is to get them to eat healthily, so just because it’s a specific time of the day, don’t corner kids in to having to eat specific types of food!

The case for weight loss is very strong at the moment, particularly among children. The number of obese kids in the country has reached an all time high, so for this reason alone there is a good reason for finding a low cholesterol diet for children. Thankfully, it is relatively easy to reduce your children’s cholesterol levels by making a few subtle adjustments in their diet. In other words, finding a lower cholesterol diet for kids to eat that won’t make them turn their noses up. Image source: http://www.tacotime.com/menu/kids_meals.html

How to find a low fat low cholesterol diet for children

High cholesterol is caused by the build up of low density lipoproteins in the walls of your arteries, and this in turn can cause problems in later life. Foods which are high in fiber and omega 3 oils can help to reduce this fatty build-up. These are generally the natural plant-based foods and not ones that contain high levels of animal fats and trans fats – in other words, burgers and fries!

Read more about low cholesterol diet recipes for kids here.

Low cholesterol diet recipes for kids

Regular health care, good nutrition, exercise, and weight control can help lower cholesterol levels in children. High cholesterol in children can lead to heart disease, which increases the risk for heart attack later in life. High cholesterol may run in families. Consult with a health care provider to determine if other family members should have a cholesterol test.

Lowering cholesterol levels in children often requires changes in lifestyle. Ask the child’s health care provider, a nurse educator, or a nutritionist for advice about how to make lifestyle changes necessary to help lower cholesterol.

Do not restrict the amount of fat in the diet of children under the age of 2 (unless directed to by a health care provider). Continue to give whole milk to children 2 years old and under. Their faster growth rate and developmental needs require more calories from fat and cholesterol.

To help reduce cholesterol levels, add more fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to the child’s diet. These foods contain soluble fiber, which helps block the absorption of cholesterol and fat into the bloodstream. They also contain vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that can help fight disease and ensure the child’s healthy growth and development.

Provide more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains for the child’s snacks, including the following:

Non-fat yogurt with whole-grain, high-fiber cereal mixed in

“Smoothies” made with fresh or frozen fruit and low- or non-fat yogurt

Apples or bananas w/peanut butter (avoid peanut butter with added salt or hydrogenated or partially-hydrogenated oils)

Popcorn made with canola oil (limit salt or try salt-free seasonings)

All-fruit popsicles

Whole-grain, high-fiber granola bars (avoid those with sodium and hydrogenated or partially-hydrogenated oils)

Raw vegetables with low-fat salad dressing or low- or non-fat yogurt dip

Read Nutrition Facts labels and ingredients lists and look for foods that are low in saturated fat, low in cholesterol, and high in fiber. Avoid trans fats (hydrogenated or partially-hydrogenated oils). For more information about food labels, talk with a health care provider, licensed dietician, or nutritionist.

Saturated fat, cholesterol, and trans fats all raise cholesterol levels. Saturated fats and cholesterol should be limited and trans fats should be avoided or strictly restricted.

Saturated fats and cholesterol are usually found in foods derived from animals (e.g., dairy products, meat, eggs). Limit saturated fats and cholesterol in the child’s diet by following these suggestions:

Switch to low- or non-fat dairy products.

Serve lean meats.

Offer fish such as salmon, trout, or herring 1-2 times per week.

Remove skin from poultry.

Use beans, tofu, or lentils as a protein source 2-3 times per week.

Limit or avoid shellfish, eggs, and butter.

Avoid liver.

Limit the child’s intake of white or albacore tuna to no more than 6 ounces per week. Avoid shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish due to potentially high levels of mercury. Talk with the child’s health care provider or registered dietician about the safety of fish in the diet.

Trans fats are found in any foods made with hydrogenated or partially-hydrogenated oils. The most common foods that contain trans fats include the following:

Stick margarines

Some peanut butters

Most microwave popcorn

Many pastries and other bakery items

Many crackers, cookies, and chips

Fast food French fries, fried chicken, and breaded chicken patties

To eliminate trans fats from the diet, check ingredients lists and avoid any products made with hydrogenated and partially-hydrogenated oils. Also, switch the child’s snacks from cookies, crackers, and chips to fresh fruits, vegetables, and healthier snack foods made with whole-grains. Avoid or limit fast food restaurants.

When eating out, ask for information about how the child’s food is prepared. Encourage the child to choose foods that are steamed, baked, grilled, roasted, poached, or broiled and request that the food is prepared with a vegetable oil such as soybean, olive, canola, or corn oil.

Kids’ menus often contain fried foods, so consider sharing a healthier adult entrée with the child, or split an adult entrée between two children. Avoid dishes that are fried, au gratin, sautéed, or stuffed because they are usually high in fat and calories.

The following tips can help make fast food meals lower in fat and calories:

Choose a side salad or fruit cup instead of French fries.

Eat only one side of the sandwich bun.

Choose chicken over beef (broiled or grilled chicken tends to be lower in fat than beef; avoid breaded or fried chicken).

Don’t “super-size” the meal or double the meat.

Avoid mayo and salad dressing or reduce the amount used.

Choose water or non-fat milk over sweetened drinks.

Other tips for a more heart-healthy lifestyle include the following:

Don’t use food as a reward or punishment.

Make the child’s lunch (many school lunches are high in fats, calories, and sodium).

If the child does eat a school lunch, look over the menu together to help make healthier choices.

Ask the child’s school cafeteria supervisor about adding more healthy choices for school lunches and breakfasts and eliminating unhealthy snack and drink choices.

Talk with the child’s school principal about eliminating vending machines that contain unhealthy foods and drinks in the school.

What kind of snacks should you avoid when you are following a Low-Cholesterol Diet?

Well, it is good to eat the sort of food that is also low in calories when you are on a low-cholesterol diet and a lot of us go for that option during a mid morning break. Here is our interpretation of the worst offenders:

Fruit and veggies are very low in calories and generally high in fiber, but smothering either in dressings can undo all the benefits you get from eating them. Mayo and ranch dressing, dips and spreads are all high in salt and many also contain a lot of fat and sugar – even the low calorie ones – so they are well worth avoiding.

Second on the hit list is processed meat. Bacon, prosciutto, pepperoni and salami are all tasty snacks but all contain extremely high fat content – and sadly, it is the worst kind, animal fats. This might sound obvious again, but sometimes it is not noticed in a salad bought from a store or a sandwich. The next time you are in a Subway at lunchtime, check out the nutritional information on the delicious Italian based subs they sell.

The next culprit in the high cholesterol stakes is the saturated-fat rich potato chip. The French Fries you get with your low calorie Big Mac meal, the tortilla chips and the corn puffs that you are tempted by when you have finished a workout are all just as dangerous as they all very high in trans-fats.

The next one is another obvious choice for most of us – sweet biscuits. In fact, the typical biscuit contains more saturated fat than the typical fruit cocktail or sundae and so they are another big hazard if you are on a low cholesterol diet. The worst type are the ones that combine the worst elements of the biscuit with the sugar hazards of chocolate, so if you are fond of them, do your heart a favour and give them a miss.

And finally, while we are still on the dessert menu, our old friend Ice Cream is a big threat. Try to avoid all the additions and special flavours if you must have a dessert, and don”t forget to reduce the portion size if you can’t help yourself once in a while – one scoop will do a lot less damage than two!

Here is some more good advice for avoiding the dangers when you are on a low-cholesterol diet:

Eating a well-balanced diet, full of nutrient-dense and fiber-rich foods, and exercising regularly are two of the keys to overall good health.

But did you know they also are ways to lower your cholesterol, reducing the risk of heart disease?

Here are some more tips for keeping your cholesterol under control:

The Good and the Bad: You may have heard that you need to keep your cholesterol down and to avoid foods with high cholesterol at all costs. However, not all cholesterol is bad. In fact, high-density lipoprotein or HDL cholesterol is good for you. The cholesterol that leads to heart disease and other conditions is none as low-density lipoprotein or LDL. Foods with saturated fat such as full-fat dairy products and fatty red meats have high amounts of LDL cholesterol. To learn more about the difference between HDL and LDL, visit the American Heart Association.

Tips to Lower Cholesterol: The South Beach Diet offers some great tips on how to manage and lower your cholesterol.

Limit saturated fat: Foods full of LDL are poultry with skin, full-fat dairy products, and generally fatty foods are considered low cholesterol foods. By adopting a diet that is rich with foods with high cholesterol, you can keep LDL at bay. Try foods such as soy, spinach, and salmon to keep good cholesterol in your diet. VisitPrevention.com for the top-10 best foods for HDL.

Exercise smart: It is important to have at least 20 minutes of aerobic exercise every other day in order to lower LDL levels and increase HDL levels. Try walking, swimming, biking, and hiking for some variety.

Quit smoking: In addition to helping your lungs and reducing cancer risk, quitting smoking may raise good HDL levels by up to 10 percent.

Which are foods that lower cholesterol levels?

There are a number of foods that lower cholesterol, or claim to at least, but the ones which I can personally guarantee to work are oats, nuts and oily fish, particularly mackerel. Some fruits can be regarded as lowering cholesterol as well, but in my experience, all that they do is stop your cholesterol levels rising rather than actually lowering them.

However, there is a good deal of debate on the subject, and some nutritionists will stake their reputations on the cholesterol-lowering properties some foods possess.

Can alcoholic drinks be regarded as foods that lower cholesterol?

For many people, a little alcohol, such as the ritual evening cocktail, is a sure cure for the day’s troubles. These same individuals might not be surprised to learn that when consumed in moderation, alcohol may also offer some protection against heart disease. Research has shown that moderate consumption of alcohol can raise HDL cholesterol.

In fact, the phenomenon called the French Paradox relates to the fact that the French have fewer heart attacks than Americans. This is a situation that could not be explained simply by comparing cholesterol levels in the two countries. Experts felt that this difference was due primarily to the French diet, which contains more red wine, fruits, and vegetables. Although red wine contains antioxidants and other compounds that may help prevent blood clots or the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, it has not been shown that only red wine is protective. In fact, most studies have linked moderate consumption of alcohol in general — including wine, beer, and hard liquor — to a reduced risk of heart disease.

The following list are specific foods known to help cleanse cholesterol build-up in the arteries and heart. This is due to their high levels of fiber, Omega-3 Fatty Acids, Lecithin, Vitamin E, C, Niacin and Rutin.

Legumes: beans, lentils, tofu, tempeh, mung and soybeans and their sprouts. (Non-GMO)

Whole Grains: buckwheat, rye, amaranth, quinoa rice, and sprouted hard winter wheat.

Vegetables: radish, horseradish, hot peppers, onions, garlic, leek, scallion, shallot, chive, leafy greens, cabbage, spinach, carrot greens, kale, broccoli, parsley, asparagus, bell pepper, celery, sea vegetables, cucumber, chlorella, mushrooms.

Fruits: citrus, tomato, rose hip, banana, and persimmon.

Nuts and Seeds: Almonds, hazelnut, flax seed, chia seed, pumpkin seed, poppy seed, walnut, sunflower sprouts.

Fish: sardine, salmon, mackerel, and deep/cold-water fish.

Raw honey and Bee Pollen

Herbs: Hawthorne berry, dandelion root, burdock root, chaparral, peppermint (for heart palpitations and strengthening heart muscle), cayenne pepper, ginger, rhubarb root, yarrow, chamomile, motherwort, valerian.

Oils: Naturally you will want to avoid the so-called “bad saturated fats” and focus on getting a balance of the “good fats”, such as the Omega-9, Olive, Hazelnut, Almond and Sesame oils; and the Omega-3 and 6, Walnut and Grapeseed oils. It has been proven that a balanced intake of Omega-3 and 6 oils along with high levels of Omega-9 significantly reduce the risk of dying from a cardiovascular related disease.

Most importantly eat a wide variety of whole foods to insure you receive all the essential nutrients you need to keep your body strong, healthy and drug free.

This no cholesterol soup is easy and quick to prepare, and best of all contains no cholesterol (and very few calories). Ideal if you want to use it as a weight loss aid as well as a low cholesterol recipe, and the beans and other root vegetables make this a hearty lunch-time treat.

It is also great if you want to restore some energy after working out at the gym, take just minutes to prepare and tastes good as well. Just add the beans to the basic soup recipe at the end and you’ll have a fresh and tasty soup that will serve a number of people – depending how big the bowls are, of course. This no cholesterol soup recipe is easy to follow and quick to make: you could try adding chilli flakes, a little spice such as cumin if you like Asian flavours or Basil or Oregano if you prefer Mediterranean flavours – experiment for the best version for your taste. You can always adapt the recipe to suit your family preferences!

Here’s the recipe for this no cholesterol soup:

2 celery stalks, chopped

2 carrots halved lengthways and sliced

1 onion, chopped

2 cloves of garlic, sliced

6 cups vegetable broth or stock

1 cup tomato sauce

1 cup fresh green beans, sliced

1 tin Garbanzo beans, rinsed

1 cup fresh Kale, chopped and with stems removed

2 tblsps olive oil

salt and pepper

Parmesan and croutons – optional

Method for making Garbanzo Bean no cholesterol soup:

Add the carrot, celery and onion to the bowl and heat over a low heat with the olive oil. When the onion starts to clarify, add the stock (or broth) and stir it in. Simmer until it heats through, then add the Kale. Finally, add the beans. In the video we also add some mushroom bouillon for extra flavour.

These individual little cakes are amazing and ready to eat in one minute! They are perfect for whenever you feel like a treat without all the fat and calories that cake can have. Genius idea! And great for the kids linchbox, or, for that matter, your or your partners. Why not take a little dessert to work with you?
Chocolate-Pumpkin Vegan Cupcakes

Try a vegan version of chocolate cupcakes made unique with stout, pumpkin, or molasses. In the UK you can also try Golden Sytup, but be warned, this will massively increase the calorie content. If you want to try a lower sugar alternative, go for one of the sugar substitutes – my personal favourite is Splenda – and you can use this to make a syrup with a fraction of the calories and all the taste. Use a little yellow food colouring to give them the same look as the original.

The Second Low Cholesterol and Low Fat Lasagne Recipe

Lasagne is one food that tastes better with time; it’s even more delicious reheated a day or two later.
Chef James Brockman has reduced the fat content by using low-fat mozzarella, and he gives us a choice between cottage cheese and ricotta. Add a pinch of nutmeg to the cheese and spinach mixture to bring out the flavour.

Personally, I love the taste of spinach in this dish, but if your family doesn’t, leave it out. The recipe still works well!

Low-Fat Lasagna Sauce

1 cup onion, chopped

1 cup green bell pepper, chopped

1-1/4 lb. ground turkey

2 teaspoons dried Italian seasoning

One 28 oz. can diced tomatoes

One 15 oz. can tomato sauce
