Technology has taken a new turn lately with the introduction of the GuruPlug Server to the computer market. This innovative and tiny device combines all the features you’re used to with low power pcs, with one major exception: it is the size of a human palm and plugs directly into the wall socket. It is extremely energy-efficient, using only 5 watts of power to run a 1.2GHz processor, with 512MB of RAM, Wifi and Bluetooth. The server can host operating systems like Ubuntu with ease, meaning you don’t need to learn any exotic Linux platforms. The physical dimensions are only 95mm (L) x 65mm (W) x 48.5 mm (H). The GuruPlug Server is available in both the UK and Europe for £89 plus delivery.

The Tranquil PC SQA-5H-SAFE is not only a quiet machine, it is also a robust file storage server, complete with Tranquil’s innovative Safe Serve Module. Tranquil PC didn’t skimp on the looks, either. The unit construction is made of enameled steel with over 70 percent sourced from recycled material. The system runs on Windows Home Server with an Intel Atom Dual Core processor for speed, power, and reliability.

This low powered network storage system features a 2GB memory, 4x spare hard disk drive slots, and a 64 bit ready processor, while using only 22W of power. For cooling, the internal CPU and chipset use an aluminum heat sink (which is fanless). The hard disk drive cooling system includes a hot swap 8cm fan, with optimised speed and acoustic control. Your data is completely safe thanks to the Safe Server Module. Continuous operation is possible even in the event a hard disk drive in the Safe Server Module fails. The process of changing a damaged or broken hard disk drive is easy. Simply identify the hard disk drive that needs to be changed, power-down the server, remove the Safe Serve Module, snap out the hard disk drive module, eject and replace the old hard disk drive, replace the module, and power the server back on. The system will automatically start to rebuild while it is booting. Once all of the LED lights turn green, usually between four and a half and five hours, the system is fully operational.

Measurements of this Tranquil PC are as follows: 195 (h) X 213 (w) X 221 (d) including feet. The basic model is available in satin black or gloss white and is being sold for £569.00, not including a 17.5% VAT or shipping. Extra RAM or hard disk drives will add to the price.

Made in Sheffield, the GreenPC BE20 has an AMD Dual Core Processor (2.7 GHz) and a high-performance ATI Radeon 3100 graphics card with both DVI & VGA connectors. The 3100 graphics card enables Blu-ray playback, full high-definition functionality as well as video and photo editing.

The GreenPC BE20 by Very PC uses just over 39 watts when operating. The 160 GB (5400 RPM) Slimline Desktop ensures a low-embedded carbon footprint with a small physical presence (96mm h x 335mm w x 355mm d) which saves desk space. Its quiet operation doesn’t detract from the support for high-definition surround sound either.

The BE20 comes equipped with 2 GB DDR2 800 RAM but can be upgraded to 4 GB. It has a tray-loading DVDRW drive with optional Blu-ray and slot load drives. Tranquil has a talent for building computers that are both eco-friendly and very functional. The T7-330 Atom PC is no exception. This compact little system comes with between 512MB and 2GB of ram, depending on the user’s preference. The available hard drive options range between 80GB to 2TB for the primary drive, with the option for a second drive with up to 250GB of space.

The processor is a 64-bit dual-core Intel Atom 330, with a speed of 2×1.6GHz. Operating system choices include Windows XP (Home or Pro editions, with Service Pack 3 applied) and Windows Vista.

The combination of the Intel Atom 330 processor and Tranquil’s proprietary TranCool3 heat sink gives the T7-330 Atom a very low power output. The base model consumes 28W, while the high-end version only pushes that rating up to 31W. The combination of this processor and heat sink also keeps the machine very cool, with a maximum ambient temperature of 48°C, and like all Tranquil products, it is almost totally silent. While the actual power output might be slightly higher than some other eco-friendly machines, few can match the capabilities this computer offers. This combination of low-energy and raw computing ability makes for a machine that is not just eco-friendly, but powerful as well.

The T7-330 Atom Low Power PC measures at 224 (d) x 232 (h) x 57 (w) mm, and may either be used as a desktop or mounted on the wall with the optional wall brackets. The base model starts at a price of £196.00.

This Aleutia D1 ultra small form factor pc is 58% smaller than comparable models from Fujitsu Siemens, HP or Dell. Small enough to sit under a 17” monitor, it quietly runs on 35W of power. It comes equipped with a dual core Intel Atom 333 CPU (1.6 GHz each).

The GreenPC AT10 by VeryPC is an ultra small desktop featuring the Intel dual core Atom 330 CPU (operating at 1.6 GHz), 1GB memory (DDR2 800; expandable to 2GB), and 120GB Green Power SATA hard drive (expandable to 500GB). Power consumption of the GreenPC AT10 is less than 28 watts average use.

The VeryPC GreenPC AT10 also features Intel’s GMA950 graphics chipset with 1X VGA and includes an S-Video port. 5.1 audio is included as well as 10/100 Lan, 1 parallel and 1 serial (RS232) port, and 2 front and 4 rear USB ports. The front Firewire port requires a Firewire adaptor for operation. A DVD-RW or Blu Ray/DVD-RW tray or slot loaded drive is optional as is an 802.11n wireless card. The computer ships without operating system, but Windows XP Home, Vista Home, 7 Premium (32 or 64 bit), or 7 Professional (downgraded to XP Professional) are available options. Tranquil T7-HSG Home Server with Atom 330 Processor

Tranquil’s entry into the low power home server arena, the T7-HSG, is an intriguing look at the way a home server should be built. The server features a unique fanless (convection) based cooling system, a Gigabit LAN port, 4 USB ports and an Intel dual core Atom 330 processor running at 1.6 Ghz. Power consumption is rated at 33W for the stock configuration, which comes with 512 Mb RAM an a 500 GB hard drive.

Upgrade options include RAM up to 2 GB or a 1 TB hard drive. The stock server comes with Windows Home Server pre-installed, but can also be ordered without an OS, giving the end user the choice of installing an OS (and a £50 discount) . The T7-HSG is primarily designed for desktop mounting, although brackets are available for wall mounting. Four USB2.0 ports allow the end user to seamlessly add peripheral devices such as additional storage capacity, a real plus. The server also comes equipped with PS2 keyboard and mouse ports along with an RS-232 serial port.

The dimensions of the T7-HSG is diminutive (22.4 cm x 23.2 cm x 5.7 cm) and the weight comes in at about 4 kg. But don’t let it’s small size fool you. There’s a lot of horsepower packed in the quiet case. The current price from Tranquil for this low power server is £334.88.
