From the workings of the cosmos, to the feelings one person has for another, to the geometry of golden ratio in nature, it has been an integral part of human evolution to find patterns and meaning in our surroundings and relationships. But with the explosion of the digital age many theorize that our hard grained desire to find meaning and stay connected has led us astray from what it truly means to be human. Is this true, are we without hope?

More info after the jump

Partly inspired by Philip Glass’ Portals: A Multi-Media Exploration of Longing in the Digital Age (and our nearly completed My Internet Self project), the Lowbrow Society is partnering with the NYC cultural institution Symphony Space to look for the answers in an open call for art, reflecting on the broad theme of Connectivity.

Some questions to ask yourself:

How do you interface with nature?
Are you in touch with your roots?
How can one keep up a meaningful dialogue in the digital age?
Is there such a thing as being “too connected?”
Tune in, turn on, drop out…
What is our purpose?

Submissions must be sent by September 12, selected art work must be delivered by September 16 (see Terms and Conditions). On Opening night an artists’ reception will be hosted by The Lowbrow Society for the Arts with a discussion led by Symphony Space Artistic Director Laura Kaminsky.

Dearest Troublemakers,

Over the past few weeks, Gwynn and Lenora have been hard at work here at the (metaphorical) Lowbrow HQ! Let me tell you what we’ve been up to!

Lowbrow Society has been putting together an interactive experience called “Digital Sacraments” for an event called Bleeding Hearts.

We don’t want to give all our secrets, but Digital Sacraments is an extension of Gwynn’s previous performance with a dash of the unexpected. Expect to be immersed in a electric Garden of Eden, touched with neon by dazzling revelers, and initiated into a fantastical underworld of absurdity and beauty. There will be charming giveaways, elaborate costumes, and an environment filled with sound, sight and touch. Who will you invite into our wonderland?

About the event:

Conceived and curated by Brooklyn-based indie rock band, Futurist, “Bleeding Hearts” got its start through a successful Kickstarter campaign. Now, on June 30th at Rebel NYC, this mind-blowing evening of spectacular art, performance, technology, and music will come to life. The event will feature live performances and a nine-room walk-through installation shaped by the collaboration of 42 of New York City’s most innovative artists and performers.
