Skye Paige sings lyrics like: “The more people I meet, the more I like my dog…” and “I’m a whole lotta woman, you ain’t much of a man…” and she backs it up! On record and on stage, Skye Paige captivates the audience. Having been on covers and featured in numerous magazines and newspapers, Skye is certainly the Lowcountry’s hardest working woman in show business. Born in Anderson SC, she started life in Hartwell, GA, a town that didn't have a hospital. Then moved to Atlanta when she was four and later, traded her viola for playing a guitar, banjo and ukulele and started playing in bands by the age of 15. As she sings in “Grown Ass Woman,” a song she recently debuted at Home Team BBQ:

I’m a grown ass woman
I grew up in the city
But I came from a swamp
I'm a grown ass woman
And I’ll do what I want

Skye joined the Lowcountry Blues Club back in 2007. With influences and inspirations like Wanda Jackson, Memphis Minnie, Etta James, Led Zeppelin, Jack White, Elvis, Duane Allman, ZZ Top, Susan Tedeschi, Unknown Hinson, Hank 3, Southern Culture on the Skids, Johnny Cash... it’s easy to see where her rawkin’ attitude and sassy stage presence came from! However, she graciously adds that now, the people she knows personally are a bigger influence. If you’re lucky enough to catch her at a Blues Jam, she’ll dazzle you with some of her favorites like “Fujiyama Mama”, “Hard Headed Woman”, … Or maybe originals like “Bad Luck Woman”, “Wrong, Wrong, Wrong, Wrong” or my favorite, “Paint The Town Red”. The night following the passing of Etta James, Skye honored one of her musical heroes by sitting in with The Mason Dixon Band and myself and smoking a cover of the Jimmy Reed classic “Baby, What You Want Me To Do?” that would have made the Hall of Famer proud! Thank you, Skye!

As a long time Club Member, she mentions local favorites Sarah Cole, Johnny Mac, Bill Nance, Louie D and Dan Wright and states that she misses former Jam Master, Tommy Thunderfoot. She also wants to note another favorite, Lua Martin... “she doesn't play...but she is always there”. She has worked locally with Greg Levkus, George McDaniel, John Krucke, Roy Brooks, Micheal Murrary, Louis Dixon, Brian Widowski… Her current band consists of Mike Dumas on bass, Patrick Queen on drums and Bradley MacLean on guitar. Skye has played and recorded with much of the Southeast's finest talent, such as Dash Rip Rock, The Defilers, and Atlanta blues legend, Mudcat.

The life story of Skye Paige is certainly a classic one. While her parents were not musicians, they passed their love for what is now known as Classic Rock to Skye. My favorite anecdote involves TV; Skye said that she never watched it. Not until the advent of MTV. Her addiction to the video channel became so strong, it forced her mother to have their cable discontinued! After, many years fronting rock bands from her teens into adulthood, then stopping to raise her first son, the itch drove her back. This time she led a Jazz trio hoping to quench her thirst. She moved to Charleston in 2001 with hopes of finding a better environment to raise her children and continue her career in Jazz. The struggle to find players led her to frequent Blues jams. However, her second son and another inevitable break from music soon followed. Not having a musical outlet made her miserable. She started playing again and eventually formed her first band in town: Skye and the Sputniks. A couple years later, she discovered the Blues Club. The Sputniks eventually morphed into Skye Paige and the Original Recipe who she has been playing with since 2009.

Lyrics to “Grown Ass Woman” seem a little like déjà vu after hearing her MTV saga:

My momma called me up said she didn't like the look
Of all of my pictures on my Facebook.
She said you look like a Ho, you look like a tramp,
I said come on momma, cut me some slack
I’m a grown ass woman
I’m a grown ass woman

Her list of accomplishments and career highlights is truly impressive! She closed out 2011 by playing 25 out of 26 nights in a row over 6,000 miles (while doing all of her own driving) on tour with the Coney Island Rock-n-Roll Show. Her first full length CD, with The Original Recipe, “Whole Lotta Woman”, was featured globally in Rockabilly Magazine, the single "Just Wanna Ride" was voted “Best of the Year” in the Charleston City Paper and garnered her a nomination for "Best Rock Female" by the Carolina Music Awards in 2010. She won 1st place at the Myrtle Beach House of Blues "Battle of the Blues" and has been a featured artist at numerous festivals across the South and East Coast including Heavy Rebel Weekender, Cash Bash, Elvis Fest and various Harley Davidson and ABATE biker rallies. Furthermore, she has worked with Bizarro Burlesque Productions since 2009, which was voted "Best Stage Show 2009," by Charleston City Paper. She has even won Pin Up Competitions including 1st place in the "Undead Girl Pin Up 2010" and 3rd Place in Hellbounders Memorial Day show.

When you first witness Skye in action, you can’t help but take notice. She has a real command of the audience and the stage. Jam nights feature a plethora of real musical talent, but when Skye takes the stage, there is an obvious difference. Ears perk up and heads turn.

I’m just trying to pay my bills
Tryin’ to get out of Loserville

Ya, she works it. My attempt to describe it and tell you about it almost seems futile. Her lyrics and her performances tell it best. From her guest appearances, to her solo work, her Jazz duo, The Original Recipe and Bizarro Burlesque to her doting on her young boys… she’s always workin’ it. If you haven’t already, you must pick up “Whole Lotta Woman” and go see her in person.

Visit www.skyepaige.net and mark your calendars. She’ll be hitting hot spots across the Lowcountry and from Savannah, GA to Fayettville, NC throughout February and March. As if that is not enough, she is currently working on a Jazz duo with piano player Michael Murray. And she plans to have a new Original Recipe CD released by late spring. Plans after that? Tour!!! Tour!! Tour!!!

You can also find Skye Paige on Facebook, and become a fan of Skye Paige and the Original Recipe, to keep up to date on all things happening with the Original Recipe and Bizarro Burlesque Productions!!

While The J Edwards band represents The Lowcountry Blues Club in Memphis (wish them luck!), this weekend in the Lowcountry you have many fantastic options for your entertainment:

Friday:
OLD YOU kicks off the weekend on the Vendue Rooftop @ 6 then you can find them later at Wild Wings on Market
MOMMA & THE REDEMPTION w/ Jojo Wall and family is at Smokey’s Place
MASON DIXON w/ Scott Bucholtz is at The Moonshine Saloon in Summerville
STARLING w/ Captain Kirk is at Fat Boys in Moncks Corner

Saturday:
SHONUFF w/ Jon Hager plays at 5pm at the Pour House as part of the Follywood Party that continues into the evening
The PORT CITY PROPHETS w/ Tim Kirkendall are at the Montreux Bar & Grill
OLD YOU is at Loggerheads on Folly
MASON DIXON w/ Scott Bucholtz is at Cat Daddy’s in Ridgeville
STARLING w/ Captain Kirk is at Nick’s Place in Harleysville
SARAH COLE & THE HAWKES are at the Kickin' Chicken/James Island

Sunday:
No jam at Smokey's - cancelled due to the Super Bowl - but come again the following Sunday...

And remember, we're just one week away from the 22nd annual LOWCOUNTRY BLUES BASH -- February 8-21, 2012
Metro Charleston, South Carolina, organized by Godfather of the Blues Gary Erwin
14 days, 59 acts, now up to 26 venues and 102 shows
Many FREE and all-ages shows
Live blues day & night
Local, regional, national, international artists
All small venues (the way the blues was meant to be experienced)
PRINT YOUR OWN ILLUSTRATED BROCHURE (easy! two pages) at www.bluesbash.com!!

------------------------------------------------------

Reminders:

If you want to see your band's gigs in this newsletter, send all the details to lowcountrybluesclub@gmail.com, with "For the blog" as the subject line. Here's the scoop, from Scott Bucholtz.

Friday, January 27:
Starling w/ Captain Kirk is at Smokey’s Place
Fish Scales and The Dan Wright Duo are at Art’s Bar & Grill
Sarah Cole & The Hawkes will be at The Oasis on Folly
Highway 17 Blues Band at Hidden Cove Marina in Moncks Corner

Saturday, Jan 28:
Big Daddy Cade’s B.B. King Tribute w/ Scott Bucholtz will be at the YE OLDE MUSIC STORE’s 22nd Birthday Celebration @ 5pm
The Louie D Project w/ J.R. Getches is on the Vendue Rooftop @ 6pm
Mason Dixon w/ Scott Bucholtz is at Famous Joe’s in West Ashley
Hibachi Heroes w/ Rob Lowe at Island Bar & Grill

And from Lua - I want to add that also on Saturday night there will be a wonderful show at the Hippodrome (formerly the IMAX) downtown for one of my favorite local musicians, Mac Leaphart. Mac is a wonderful singer/songwriter - you might know his song "Confederate Roses" which is played a lot on the radio. Mac had to have surgery for a brain tumor back in November, and his many friends have gotten together to put on a benefit for him. It will be a multimedia experience including film and lots of music from people like Mark Bryan, Danielle Howle, Jamie Resch, Shovels & Rope, Guilt Ridden Troubadour, and many more. It starts early at 6:30 with a silent auction, then the show at 8:00. You can get tickets ahead of time from the Hippodrome for $17, or at the door for $20. I know the show is going to be well worth it!

And remember: The Lowcountry Blues Club now has TWO weekly jam nights. Smokey’s Place Sports Bar & Grill at 1213 Remount Road in North Charleston hosts a weekly jam from 5 pm to 9 pm on Sunday’s. And there's the regular Wednesday night jam at Home Team BBQ/West Ashley, 8pm.

------------------------------------------------------

Reminders:

If you want to see your band's gigs in this newsletter, send all the details to lowcountrybluesclub@gmail.com, with "For the blog" as the subject line. My name is Jack. I play guitar for Highway 17 Blues Band. Lua Wells and I were discussing the use of the internet to promote home grown music, and she asked me to provide some information about one of the methods that my band uses.

What follows is just one option, but it serves as an example of how easy, and inexpensively, one can reach out to thousands of people. Using the internet to promote a band can be very fruitful in getting recognition, credibility, and bookings. There is a myriad of options available, one of which is www.reverbnation.com. This site is one that musicians worldwide, including some of our own Lowcountry Blues Club friends (see list below), use to promote their music. Lowcountry Blues Club also has a reverbnation presence, where users can enjoy recordings of some of the weekly jams.

Many of the services are offered for free. Some of the options available include band bio, photos, video, show schedules, and streaming audio. It also offers a set of popularity charts, sortable by location and genre, which aids browsing if a user wishes to explore a local scene. Listeners can bring up the site and enjoy the band pages without having to sign up for a free account. Statistics are reported to each band that shows fans, stream counts, and downloads. This site also provides (for a nominal fee), the ability to upload music for retail sale to iTunes, Rhapsody, Amazon, Google Music, and some 30 other retail sites. It also integrates with other social media sites such as Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter to enable broadcast of promotional information.

Since we started using this site in summer of 2009, Highway 17 Blues Band has gained over 6,000 profile visits, over 2,000 streams, and over 5,000 fans in 30 US states and in foreign countries such as India, Germany, Trinidad, Canada, and the UK. Sales reports of our music are starting to come in and I am pleased to report that we have sales reaching as far away as Canada. Today, we are #216 on the national blues chart and #331 on the global blues chart. Port City Prophets (featuring Tim Kirkendall) and Highway 17 Blues Band have been trading off the number one spot in Charleston for the past few months. Currently, PCP is #1 and Hwy 17 is #2.

It takes a bit of time to put all this together, but it has been worth the effort. Being able to connect with such a vast audience has never been easier with the use of this technology.

Shameless plug: Check out Highway 17 Blues Band at www.highway17bluesband.com.

Partial list of Lowcountry Blues Club friends that use ReverbNation to promote their music: Dan Wright, DownWright Scoundrels, Highway 17 Blues Band, J Edwards Band, Jack Downey (solo), Johnny Mac and the Booty Ranch, Jonathan Robinson, Juke Joint Johnny, Momma and the Redemption, Paul Parr, Port City Prophets, Rob Lowe, Shrimp City Slim, Skye Paige and the Original Recipe, Tim Shaw, Tommy Thunderfoot and the Accelerators, and Victoria Station.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Weekend Music -

Don't forget the Lowcountry Blues Club's Road to Memphis Benefit this coming Saturday night, January 21, at Fiery Ron's Home Team BBQ/West Ashley, 8 pm, with Victoria Station, the Hibachi Heroes, and headliner The J Edwards Band - an awful lot of great music and fun for just a $5 donation!

Also, on Friday:
Highway 17 Blues Band w/ Jack, Gary, Jojo & Motor will be at Smokey’s Place
Mason Dixon w/ Scott Bucholtz is at Fat Boy’s

And also on Saturday:
Starling w/ Captain Kirk is at Bottom’s Up
The Port City Prophets w/ Tim Kirkendall are at Smokey’s Place
Old You will be on The Vendue Rooftop at 6 then later at Boones
Homemade Wine will be at the Wild Wing Downtown

And remember: The Lowcountry Blues Club now has TWO weekly jam nights. If you’re reading this, you are probably a member, fan or follower of the Lowcountry Blues Club. In which case, there should be no need to extol the virtues of the Blues Club. Though, I will anyway… Through your interest, participation and dues, you have the honor and good fortune to be a part of something truly special. I say this not as an Officer or Board Member but as a player thrilled and blessed to have the ability to participate. What happens on Wednesday’s AND Sunday’s is something to behold.

In the spirit of The Season, I would personally like to give thanks! To Mike Davis from Ye Olde Music for suggesting that I go to a Blues Jam upon my arrival in town. To Tim Shaw, Billy Gadol and all former and current Officers and Board Members for all of their time and efforts behind the scenes to ensure that we all continue to have this amazing opportunity. To the owners and staff of first A Dough Re Mi and now Fiery Ron’s Home Team BBQ and Smokey’s Place for having the vision and appreciation and allowing us to do our thing. To Dan Wright and all of the “House” musicians for always ensuring that the show is world class. To Greg Levkus for not getting too upset with how hard I hit his drums! To Captain James Kirk for a list of things far too long to mention. To all of the TALENT for giving and sharing inspiration that goes far beyond anything that I can describe. Finally, to everyone who has participated in any way on stage and off. By paying attention, from the looks in your eyes and on your faces. For the words of appreciation and encouragement. For the unbelievable communal experience that is a result of this EAR CANDY FOR THE SOUL!

Once again, I’ll suggest: Give/Share the GIFT OF MUSIC! Not just over the holidays but throughout the year. All of us, regardless of any personal situation, can afford to do that.

Scott Bucholtz

Weekend Music

Here's wishing you a great weekend!

Friday, Dec 16:
Skye Paige and The Original Recipe returns to Charleston Area! As you may recall, friends of the Blues Club, rock band LESLIE, had their equipment stolen while on tour in Delaware back in November of 2010. Here we go again… earlier this week more of our friends were hit. HOMEMADE WINE, whose travel base is here in Charleston, had their entire equipment trailer stolen while at home in Knoxville, TN. For a complete list of the hot equipment, look for Homemade Wine the Band at: facebook.com/homemadewinemusic. Meanwhile, show them some support this weekend as they will be at Wild Wing’s downtown this Saturday. Maybe you can drop a buck or two into the tip jar! Meanwhile, buy their new release: “Barstools, Broken Hearts, and Songs From The Road” at CD Baby or iTunes… Remember, it’s the Holidays. SHARE THE GIFT!

Outings:

Friday, Dec 9: A Fragile Tomorrow plays at the Village Tavern in Mt Pleasant, along with two other bands. From what we understand, it's still in beta form - that is, they're still working out the kinks in it before it goes public. So not everyone can get it just yet. But if you're on facebook, and have a friend who's using turntable already, then you have an in. It doesn't work well with all web browsers, so the site suggests you upload Chrome for best results. If you get into the site, what you'll find are rooms full of people playing and listening to all kinds of music. Some rooms have a narrow focus, such as just Americana or just Indie Rock or just Metal. Others have more of a mix - maybe "Rock, Blues, Jazz, Soul", for instance. I prefer to go into a room that doesn't have a lot of people in it, and that way I can be one of the djs, instead of just a listener. If you like a song that someone plays, you hit a button that says "Awesome" and that makes your little avatar's head bop along to the music! In many rooms, it's considered polite to "awesome" most songs, unless you really hate it, in which case you can hit "lame" instead.

There are more details that you'll learn about if you give it a try. I really enjoy the chance to play music by local Charleston artists for people all over the country who've never heard of some of my favorite musicians. Some of the local bands that you can find on turntable already are these: Cary Ann Hearst, A Fragile Tomorrow, Heyrocco, The Explorers Club, Skye Paige, The Whisperjets, White Rhino, and Lindsay Holler. Just type in the name of your favorites, and maybe they're there, too!

This weekend -

Friday: The Louie D Project (w/ JR Getches) is at The Brick House Kitchen on Folly. 3 X Lucky (w/ Scott Bucholtz and Jojo Wall) is at Bushido in West Ashley, James Brown Dance Party at the Pour House

Friday and Saturday: Johnny Mac & The BootyRanch is at the Sand Dollar Social Club

Saturday: Wanda Johnson & Shrimp City Slim host the Blues & BBQ Harbor Cruise which sails 6-8 pm $39.95 (tax included) per person, covers BBQ buffet, harbor cruise, concert. Also, Starling (w/ Captain Kirk) is at The Bottom while The Louie D Project is at the Silver Dollar. And Mac Leaphart and A Fragile Tomorrow play for a benefit at the Windjammer.

JAMMERS ALERT:
The Lowcountry Blues Club now has TWO weekly jam nights. All four bands that played put on great sets: Highway 17 Blues Band, Nate Mills and the Blue Plate Specials, Momma & the Redemption Band, and The J Edwards Band. Thanks to the relentless pestering skills of Captain Kirk, we gathered up a lot of money to help send the top-scoring band to Memphis at the end of January (thanks, Captain!).

Now, I hope we all know that when you've got 4 excellent bands, you can't really say that one is "better" than another. They're each different, and each is excellent in its own way. Our judges used the scoring system that is used at the International Blues Challenge, and using those parameters, the top scorer ended up being..... The J Edwards Band!! So, if all goes well, they'll be heading off to Memphis to have great fun at the IBC in a couple of months.

We'll be putting together a couple more benefit shows before then, so you'll have another chance to see the J Edwards Band play, and to help with the next shows. We'll let you know the dates soon. Then you can let Billy or Rob know if your band wants to play...

Thanks again to Home Team for hosting us, to Encore Music for the sound, to our judges Wilton Elder, Tim Kirkendall, Dan Wright, and Steve Simon... And to EVERYONE who helped!

JAMMERS ALERT:
Starting this Sunday November 13, The Lowcountry Blues Club will have TWO weekly jam nights. Soon, in addition to the regular Wednesday night jam, Smokey’s Place Sports Bar & Grill at 1213 Remount Road in North Charleston will be hosting a weekly jam from 5 pm to 9 pm.

Also later on Sunday the 13th, there will be a Neil Young tribute show at the Pour House, so you can come over after the jam if you're a fan of Neil...

------------------------------------------------------

Reminders:

If you want to see your band's gigs in this newsletter, send all the details to lowcountrybluesclub@gmail.com, with "For the blog" as the subject line. It's a service that has been in Europe for awhile, with rave reviews, but is new in the U.S. If you join, you can have access to millions of songs, and the basic service is actually free! The free version comes with ads, but they are not too intrusive. And since the ads pay for the music (like on the radio), I'm not complaining. Or you can choose to pay $5 or $10 a month if you want no ads, and extra features. Check out spotify.com for more info, and to request an invitation to join. You may have to wait for your invitation, but probably not too long. You can then link your Spotify account to your facebook account, if you choose to, and share music with your friends. Very cool!

In Blues Club news, we still have a few spots open for the Lowcountry Blues Challenge Battle of the Bands. But better act fast - email RobLoweSC@gmail.com for information.

What's going on this weekend, you ask?

Friday, Sept 9 - The Mason Dixon Band (w/ Scott Bucholtz) will be at Mueller’s Pub, The Louie D Project will be at The Brick.
Friday and Saturday – Starling (w/ Captain Kirk) is at Birdie & Sharon’s in Walterboro
Saturday – Homemade Wine is at The North Charleston Wild Wing while Old You is at the Mt. Every other Sunday, starting Sept 25th, we will be conducting our annual Blues Battle of the Bands - the Challenge. If your band would like to be considered, please email RobLoweSC@gmail.com for information. We need 3 songs, a bio, a hi-res jpg and an entry fee of $25. Your entry fee is due by Sept 5!! The winner will have the opportunity to go to Memphis (in late January 2012) to represent the Lowcountry at the International Blues Challenge - an amazing event! Bands will be judged by the same standards as those used at the IBC, and you can find out lots of details about the IBC and judging standards at their website at blues.org.

--------------------------------------------------------------

On January 20th, I (Scott Bucholtz) featured a BIO of Jonathan Robinson in this blog. If you read it, you may remember that I reported that Jonathan had been commuting back and forth to Nashville pursuing opportunities to sell and publish his original material. On one of those trips to a "pitch to publisher" night, the Vice President of Major Bob Music invited him to attend the Michael Doyle Workshop. The "workshop" is a program in which the publisher picks 10 writers a year to develop. Some of them get hired as staff writers. Jonathan has been picked as one of the select few. This is a four month gig that could very possibly lead to something big! Major Bob music is one of the largest independent publishers in Nashville. They discovered Garth Brooks and currently represent The Band Perry (Grammy nominated and ACM Award winners). They pitch songs (and have had them recorded) to major country, rock, r&b, and pop artists. So, everyone should send Jonathan their congratulations!

Having played in the Jonathan Robinson Trio for the past eight months, I’ve certainly become very familiar with Jonathan’s songwriting and it is awesome. On a personal note, I’d like to add that the experience has been not only the most musically rewarding that I have had, it has also resulted in performances that are easily those that I am most proud of. Whatever he ends up doing after the workshop, I sincerely hope I get to be the guy sitting behind him – hitting $#!+.

The Jonathan Robinson Trio will have their Farewell (for now) performance next Wednesday August 24th at KC Mulligan’s. Please stop by!!
