In the past few weeks, it has also made for some great photography opportunities. We had the pleasure of taking Mitch and Teresa’s engagement photos during this time. We headed out to Kent Park as we wanted to capture some of the steel bridges and tall grass scenery. Along for the walk came Mya, the couple’s small dachshund. As we found out, she was very “verbal” when being tied up to watch Mitch and Teresa get their photos taken, but seemed pose perfectly when we later included her.

As many of you know, Mitch is a dedicated Hawkeye fan. We felt that this couple needed to have some “Iowa” photos as part of their engagement photos. We are planning another shoot in the Spring, so be sure to check back!

Thank you Teresa, Mitch and Mya for letting Lower Left Side tag along and take these great photos of you guys!

Hay bails, fields and farm came up as possible locations. Allan had secured a perfect location for the shoot that encompassed all the desired elements. Elizabeth had sent me an email saying that they would also like a couple photos taken with their puppy and a tractor. Who would turn down that opportunity!?!!?

After meeting Daisy the puppy, Elizabeth, Allan and Elizabeth’s sister, we all headed out to the farm to start taking photographs. After several miles of back roads and gravel roads we arrived at a beautiful farm near La Porte City. We pulled off the dirt road into an empty field, and Allan unloaded the Farmall M tractor that had belonged to Allan’s Grandfather and Father. It is always an honor to be able to include a piece of family history into my photographs and with that, I try to capture the details that are remembered along the way.

It’s funny when you’re taking photos and you can just tell how in love a couple is. You see it in the eyes, the smiles, and the flirting. It just makes you smile!

The house was decked out with amazing decorations, each detail thought out and coordinated with the rest to create a wonderful “I Scream for Ice Cream” birthday party. From purple streamers hung from the ceiling, to striped straws for the drinks, to a red and white filled Oreo centerpiece; every item added to the special day. Eloise was a perfect hostess, coming to the door to greet all the guests and walking around to check out what everyone was doing. With a little help from her mom, Amy, she was able to unwrap all her gifts. And although she wasn’t too excited about the clothes she got, she was especially enthused with a giant gumball machine from her “Aunt” Leann. After we all enjoyed the gift openings and ice cream social, it was time for Eloise to “devour” her first cake. The anticipation was high as the cake was placed in front of her. She wasn’t sure what to do with it at first, but slowly enjoyed picking at the sprinkles one by one. Amy finally had to coach her into “going all in” with her hands. It was a blast to see her reaction to the globs of frosting stuck to her hands while the adults kept encouraging her to make a mess. As you’ll see the dog also enjoyed the cake.

So happens the only part of that forecast that was true was the wind. We had nice gray skies, cold temps and that gusty wind. Ann and Chad are celebrating 10 years of marriage this year and wanted the family photos at the Levitt Center where they had first met one another. At the time Ann was grounds keeping around the Levitt Center for the University of Iowa and Chad was working on the Levitt Center. Such chance encounters are what our lives are built upon. Grace and Tully had a great time while we were walking around taking photos. One thing that they really wanted to know is when they could take a goofy photo and climb a tree. They both made sure to fit in some goofy faces for a couple photos. Tully had on sparkly red shoes that were very cool! I asked her if I should get a pair for myself and for some reason she said that I shouldn’t… (I still think I need a pair) The girls enjoyed making funny faces and dancing while I was taking photos of just Mom and Dad. I snapped a couple photos with the girls goofing around in a couple of the photos of Ann and Chad that I think are great! I would say we all had a fun time today. Thank you to the Campion’s for inviting me to take their family photographs again this year. Oh, on my way home the sky was clearing and the sun was shining…

The girls were in great moods and were ready to rock! We were at one of my favorite locations to take photographs – Sugar Bottom. The Cremeans will use these photos in place of any of the school photos to hand out to family and friends. They say these are much better and capture a more authentic view of the girls. I hope you enjoy the Cremeans family photos!

Below you will see the setup for these photos and what I got as a result.

Items I used:

Canon 550EX flash with a 32″ shoot through umbrella.

Westcott 5 in 1 (white) reflector.

Rectangular white foam core.

Vivitar 285HV flash.

Yongnuo radio triggers.

Couple of stands to hold things up.

The 550EX was set to 1/2 power and the Vivitar was set to 1/16th power. The Vivitar was sitting on the ground camera right aimed up at the background. The umbrellas back edge was just about even with the subjects nose. The reflector was parallel with the umbrella and the back edge was also even with the subjects nose. I was shooting with my Canon 5D Mark II at 160th of a second at F8, ISO 200 with a focal length of 70mm. Images were processed in Lightroom.
