My engine is originally an EFi Pinto from a sierra and it has the electronic distributor, which of course needs wiring in, I’m running a carb so obviously the only part I need to worry about is the electronic ignition. You should have a black module on a ally backplate that has six wires coming out of it, mine is labelled 83BB 12A199 B3A, which means it is the Sierra module, the later electronic ignition from a Transit is slightly different I think, although it is just a couple wires in different places. You will also need the Sierra coil (or similar suitable one for electronic ignitions).

First off the basic wiring guide for the module is as follows (Yes it is hand drawn, it was easier than using paint!)

I have however seen people disregard wire 3 completely and cut it short as seen on this guide.

However I have the complete loom from the sierra, like in the picture above. This picture shows how that is all set out, I think for most applications it is easier to tear this loom open and just use the parts you need to run it like the diagram above.

I have also tried to describe the ends on each of the cables in the full loom to help out when identifying them all.

Being the poor person I am it has still taken a while to find the extra cash for things like a new clutch and all new gaskets etc but finally this weekend we yanked out the smokey old engine and mostly fitted up the new one. I just have a few bits to finish up but hopefully it should be running quite soon. Last night Chriz Quick came over to reshoot some of his pictures from a while back and this is how my car looked for the photos! I wish I could Mad Max it up and drive around like this all the time!

Flasher vs. banger

It’s a bit of a tough decision. Older, smaller cars tend to be cheaper when it comes to paying for the car insurance, but will likely need more regular servicing and replacement parts due to wear and tear. On the other hand, a newer car is likely to have a warranty for a few years and will have more robust parts that will need replacing less often. The trade-off here is that newer cars will have a higher insurance grouping and so will cost you more each year to insure. If you’re looking for an affordable car, look at the bigger picture when it comes to your overall costs. Finding budget car insurance is all well and good, but if it means you fail your MOT and have to spend a fortune in sorting out a bad engine then all those savings will be for nothing.

Go green

The Budget announcement for 2012 will see fuel duty increase by 3.02 pence per litre after August 1^st. Because of this, the idea of having a car with a higher fuel economy sounds much more appealing. Here we have another financial dilemma for you, as fuel efficient cars usually have a higher initial cost that your average petrol guzzling monster. Whilst this means your bank balance may take a hit initially, in the long run you’ll be able to save yourself hundreds of pounds in fuel. If you really want to save some cash, then you could look into investing in a hybrid car. Environmental benefits aside, owning a hybrid car has the potential to save you a lot of money in the long run. Your fuel emissions will be much lower than in a standard car, so your road tax will be reduced, and don’t forget that a hybrid car means less fuel is used, so you put in less at the pumps and spend less in the process.

Be sensible

Our driving habits can have a profound impact on how much we pay out on our cars. Fans of revving their engines at traffic lights and going over the speed limit are likely to see their costs increase across the board, from fuel costs to car insurance. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for tyre pressure recommendations, reduce your speed and fix problems as they arise rather than waiting for something to fall off. Look after your car and your car will look after your wallet.

Affordable motoring is still possible, even in this day and age. It’s just a little more difficult to pull off and you need to be a little more savvy.
