When we begin to lay aside, by faith, the negative “end times” mishmash that presently grips American cultural Christianity and begin to simply look at the Bible for what it is—the record of God continually making covenant with His people—the Church of the new covenant slowly comes into focus, illumined to appear to us as she is. It’s then we come to realize just how much of a short shrift the Church has been given for decades on end.

SUBSTANTIATION

Those privileged to have been freed, by the grace of God, from a particular bondage are able to free others. Even so, such a privilege is always accompanied by a certain responsibility. Our God has designed things so that His Church leads, either in truth or in error, and the rest of society follows suit. Errors in eschatology—the study of the time of the end according to Scripture—presently affect a large majority in the Body of Christ and thus, the world as a whole.

WHEN CHRIST RETURNED

For centuries doomsday prophets have erroneously predicted that their generation would see the last great battle between good and evil—Armageddon. However, many Bible scholars believe this alleged future battle has already taken place. This alternative to the futuristic theory of Armageddon is the biblical covenantal/historical view.

BACK TO BASICS, Part 2

An emphasis within a note in BACK TO BASICS, Part 1 caused me to think of the passage, John 14:2-3, and to what I believe is the prevalent misunderstanding of what is being said within it. That misunderstanding has, as part of its basis, a persistent faulty view of end times prophecy concerning the nature and timing of Jesus’ return or second coming. Before we get into second coming misconceptions and in keeping with our “back to basics” theme, let’s first address the passage of Scripture and what I believe, by faith, that the Spirit has shown concerning it.

BACK TO BASICS

Let's talk about eternal life. Scripture teaches us that a saved person, one having experienced being born again, is going to live on forever in heavan after his mortal body has expired here on earth. So, is that the gift of eternal life spoken of by our Lord and by His apostles? While I am not disputing that it is, there is more to it than that. I am drawn to a poem that I came acrosss somewhere in my travels that may shed some light on what that "more" truly is. I will share it here.

I have had enough conversations with my own fellow believers to know that what they believe about Bible prophecy does affect a very important aspect of their salvation. If being “saved” means being made whole, and it does, what does that say about being made whole in this life—not just physically but mentally and emotionally as well—and not just in the great by and by of heaven?I am going to share two of those conversations here to show what I mean.

DEFENDING CHARISMATIC PRETERISM

The fellow wants to talk about “charismatic preterism?” While it’s not every day that those two words are used together in a complimentary way, this conversation was from someone who was overjoyed to find a church that was able to mix the doctrines of the Holy Spirit and His giftings along with preterism. He was interested to know how a church could hold to the preterist (past-fulfillment) eschatology and still practice and believe in the gifts of the Spirit. Typically, these two theologies have been like oil and water—they haven’t mixed.

I can’t say enough about “those who are of the household of faith.” They are not some parenthetical “plan B,” as many in error would have you to believe. They are my uniquely endeared ones who have been in my heart and mind all along.
