Google’s Penguin Is Another Swipe at Bad Content

A flurry of blog posts and articles continues to spew forth from frustrated SEO experts over Google’s latest algorithm changes, and most of the fury is directed at the so-called “over-optimization” penalty with which the Penguin update has shot down many previously strong rankings.

Spotting the Over-Optimized

It’s often difficult to parse the deliberately vague language that the 800-pound search gorilla in the room uses to talk about its algorithm, and the term “over-optimized” is perhaps the epitome of vagueness. Google sees over-optimized sites as those engaging in “much more than white-hat SEO” upon deeper inspection, even if they don’t appear spammy on the surface. Which tactics the company is now flagging as “more than white hat” is still up for debate.

It may be that too much effort in certain white hat tactics may now be rising to the level of spam for Google’s taste. This could be a redefining of spam altogether, or at least refining the process of classifying pages as spammy with new red flags. And in an effort to define those red flags, Google is probably analyzing all that user-behavior data it’s been collecting over the past year through Chrome and its plug-ins.

Identifying Spam through Usage Statistics

Since Google started collecting usage data from Chrome users and those logged in for Google Search Plus — and because they may have gleaned a lot of data from user feedback on email spam — it’s not unreasonable to assume that those statistics are being used to flag sites where user engagement is low or on which users clearly aren’t finding what they were searching for. If a lot of users are clicking the Back button after clicking on a number-2-ranked link on SERPs for select terms, maybe it doesn’t belong there.

The user of user date in this way creates a problem for which Google may be receiving a lot of flak. More well-established sites may see their rankings suffer because usage data on them is more robust. And since Google obviously has more data on some sites than others, we can expect search results to be pretty volatile, at least until its already impressive trove of usage stats becomes more comprehensive. So, if Google usage data shows significantly higher bounce rates on your sites, you can definitely expect your rankings to suffer.

This focus on user behavior is obviously linked to the page layout algorithm launched by Google earlier this year, which is targeting sites that have little or not content available above the fold of the page. So, huge ad banners and link spam along the sidebars (which pushes your content further down the page) have definitely been identified as a marker of websites that are unfriendly to users.

It Really Is the Content, Honest!

And that leads us back to content, Google’s holy grail of search. Keyword stuffing has always been a bad idea for content, and it’s probably the low-hanging fruit for Google’s webspam team. What we’re seeing with the new language for Penguin is a redefining of why stuffing is bad, and quality organic SEO services are going to have to change significantly when it comes to content generation in order to adapt.

Keyword stuffing is a sign of “over-optimization” by professional SEO strategists and is really a natural result when trying to create content around links rather than those links occurring naturally within a piece of content. Shoehorning links and keywords into content instead of letting them arise naturally really is a welcome form of anti-webspam from Google if you’re developing amazing content but get overshadowed by spammers.

I think this is a trap that SEOs all too often fall into by treating content as just another thing that can be generated, an easy mindset to fall into if you’re outsourcing content creation. Give your copywriter some URLs and maybe a title and you’re done, right? Except, that isn’t how the real creative process works; building content from heavily optimized anchor text outward is a recipe for badly written content, and you can’t always count on creative writers to pull a miracle out of their hat and create relevant content from those parameters.

This over-optimized content problem is compounded as the content subject matter becomes more esoteric. An English major has no prayer of producing any relevant content about server architecture that isn’t merely a re-hashing of industry jargon they pick up online (usually from other posts written by similarly spammy writers). If they do produce something, the content depth might not be sufficient to create a “keyword neighborhood,” where the links you want will naturally reside.

Writing such content is what creates the bad neighborhoods that you specifically should be trying to avoid linking from. A site that accepts such content might be able to rehabilitate some bad content by virtue of its own authority, but it won’t remain authoritative for long publishing such content.

It’s time to admit that this type of content really doesn’t hold as heavy a place in search engine optimization strategy as it should, and Google is finally getting around to utilizing user behavior in a way that forces that to become the focus. Even if the algorithm isn’t perfect at rewarding that type of content generation yet, you can bet the webspam team is convinced that their growing mountain of user date (from all of Google’s properties, which now have a single privacy and data collection policy) is going to provide better refinement going forward.

How to Implement Google Authorship on Your Blog

With the launch of Google+ and the announcement from Matt Cutts, in an interview from Danny Sullivan last summer, claiming the authorship of your online content is becoming increasingly important. As part of Google’s resin d’etre for search and social they are rolling out author rank as part of their future updates to their ranking algorithm. This means that Google can rank web pages based on how popular an author is within their niche and if any influential peers have +1’d that piece of content. Also if your content is regularly scraped and syndicated it will help Google to understand who the author is and rank the original source of the content higher.

You also may have noticed in the Google search results, rich snippets with a picture of the article author and a link to their Google+ profile. There are some articles circulating that blogs are seeing a higher click through rate (CTR) when these images appear in the SERP’s. So with this in mind do you think it is important to add the Google Author markup to your website?

Implementing Google Authorship with rel=”author”

First you need to add the below code to your blog post if you have an author box then add the content in their (obviously you need to change the +Your Name & googleplusid for your actual information):

Another way to add Google plus authorship to your site is to create a Google Plus badge. When you do so make sure that you choose the option Author and this will add the appropriate tags, you can then embed this on your blog.

Once the code or badge is added to your site you want to “close the loop”. To do this you want to go to your Google Plus page, select edit and under links add your blog to the “Contributor to” field.

Testing you have the rich snippet installed correctly on your web pages simply go to this web page and add your URL. If it is installed correctly you should see your Google plus profile image next to your article. Once the rich snippet is working you want to go to the Author request form and submit your details to let Google know of the update to your website.

Years ago the most popular way of entertainment for students were hanging out with friends, walking around the parks and play sports. That was yesterday, when there were no online chat, no online games no social media sites! To the new generation, the youth, with the boom of technology, social media network takes part in bringing up the new society of today especially to the students. Different social media sites nowadays are the student’s new structure to get emotional support from peers. Blogs, Facebook, twitter, my space and others offer students a new way to communicate, share and explore the other side of the world. It’s not only for the promotion of one’s personality but also the advantage of having friends and diversity.

Social Media Revolution and Addiction

Students do not find only social media websites for amusement though most of the time it is. Social media websites promotes learning, business, research and interaction. The sad thing is that most students do not see it that way. . Yes indeed we live in the modern world, we live in social technology world yet we failed to see the other side of social media that could effective to change the way our education system goes. Most of the students care about the newest updates, latest tweets, uploads, music and other latest issues. Even during school discussion some students couldn’t keep their mouth shut about what’s new on Facebook.

Eventually things lead to another and students never realized that they keep on tracking their status, checking updates as if obsessed with the feedbacks every minute, every hour. These things become a habit, and these habits become an addiction, a new conflict then rise. Addiction to drugs is already a society problem since ages and now on the 21st century a new addiction is formed.

Social media are great, fun and entertaining but when you say that you’re addicted to it, it’s the other way around. It was said that checking status, updates and being obsessed to it is the same with taking stimulants drug, you got addicted to it though social media is much better and safer. This social media addiction changes how students behave. Let just take for example during computer class I myself is a witness to it, the first thing they’ll visit the moment they sit in front of their monitors are Facebook, twitter or other accounts in which they can possibly find fun. Soon most students forget about learning and just dwell on enjoying. In most cases students get to be so attached to it that they find it hard to focus on schooling.

What’s really worst is that when they can’t live without it even just for a day.With growing social media site popularity, well definitely there’s no doubt that more and more people will see these behaviours most especially to students because they want to be always in.

We are called students because we want to learn and not just we always want to be in on what’s new. Though social media sites are already integrated in our lives, we students should also learn not to abuse it instead we should try to engage fun with learning and vice versa. Let these technologies be of enormous use and not of enormous abuse.

The Filipino game that is definitely worth playing for finally kicks off. Known as Sipa or Street Hacky Sack, this ingenious game saw Apple’s approval last November 20, 2011 and may now be downloaded from the Apple store.

SIPA The Newest Filipino Computer Game

Sipa, is the Philippines national game. The word means “to kick”, in Filipino and this is played by kicking the small ball or “sipa” with the goal of keeping it afloat and to never allow it to land on the ground. This is done by constantly kicking the ball, ergo, controlling it, using either the inner or the outer foot or the elbow. The player who keeps it afloat longer wins the game. In the Philippines, players use washer with ribbons or scrap cloth or a ball of rubber bands in lieu of a real ball.

This is one of the local games children used to play, along with “tumbang preso”, “luksong tinik”, “taguan”. Such games used to be the games that children play on the streets. Then came the wave of the computer, console and PSP games. We saw less and less children being on the streets but more and more children in computer shops. Technology has changed even the way we play, but this does not mean abandoning games we grew up with. Thus, a group of nationalists and social entrepreneurs came up Sipa. Now you can play it with android phones and Apple gadgets.

Aside from the fact that Sipa will bring back childhood memories to adults, it will introduce the game to the younger ones in the format they are more familiar with. Plus the adults can play it without using their arms, legs and feet but with their hands alone. The backround where Butchokoy, the main character in the game, shows significant landmarks and beautiful places like Luneta, Quiapo, UP, Mt. Pulag.

Sipa is not only a game but a story. It begins with Butchokoy being bullied by a playmate named Tonyo. Tonyo deprives Butchukoy from joining him and the rest of the group as they play the former’s remote-controlled robot toy. Butchukoy goes home feeling sad and low. His parents teaches him to play sipa and Butchokoy enjoys the game, and suddenly forgets about the incident. We see the importance of family which is a core Filipino value.

How Facebook Affects the Life of Students?

Social networking sites let individuals to present themselves, and begin or keep connections with others. The extremely popular social network site for students in different levels, Facebook, has already printed a big impact on their lives. The site can be used towards work-related contexts, romantic relationship commencement and connecting those with shared interests. Members may use the site to mingle with people they already know offline or to find new friends. Facebook permits its users to present themselves in an Internet profile, build up "friends" who can post comments on each other's walls, and view each other's page.

Facebook associates can also join groups based on common interests, see what things they have in common, and learn each others' hobbies, interests, favorite music, and romantic relationship status through their pages.

But what are behind these facts? What does Facebook bring to the lives of the members especially to the students? How does Facebook affect the life of a student?

Students VS Facebook

According to studies, Facebook has an impact to students. Some students are using it for educational purposes. Students would like to do some online collaboration with classmates. It is said that Using Facebook boosts students’ self-esteem even more. They would feel belongingness in the community compared to those who do not have accounts. It also provides news on what are happening in the real world and even in their school campuses. On the other hand, negative effects flourish. It was found that social networking sites has formed a new kind of addiction which we called the "social media addiction" and it is quite true in using Facebook. Are you addicted to Facebook? Some would say "yes" and some would say "no". It depends on the level of cravings. But in the recent study, it was found that a lot of students are by now addicted to it, to the extent that their school performance is affected.

"Children who spend much of their time online find it harder to focus in class and have short attention span " researchers found through the samples that 7 out of 10 teachers believed that their students are becoming obsessed with social media sites such as Facebook. Their students tend to study while using Facebook and it shows that they got 20% lower grades. Facebook-using students even perform task (projects or assignments) without completion for the reason that they spend more time scrolling down on their newsfeed to see updates about their friends and look up for their notifications rather than finishing their school tasks. Aside that Facebook affects students’ academic performance; it also has an effect on students’ emotional health. Yes, students feel connected to others but study shows that they manifest depression through seeing their status updates. Some would utilize the site to express what they feel towards their enemy in school or even outside the campus. They would blurt out through posting status that would target their opponent just to hurt their feelings.

With the rampant use of all the social networking sites, students are coming loose to the real associates. Facebook chats and posts would make them busy nowadays. They may be connected to many people but they somehow disconnect with the important aspects of their lives and one of those is education. The belief of meeting people face to face seems very odd. Students prefer to send and receive instant messages or post messages through Facebook.

Many other elements could be the reason for the inattention in studies of students. But somehow social networks like Facebook have a negative impact on the education of some students. Facebook could make students vain for better or for worse and it is the parents' obligation to watch and guide their children to get the utmost good benefits from Facebook.
