After a drive back and short night sleep I had to get to work full on as its the high season here. Anyway, I found this free moment to write my short report and let you know how my last day went!

The first race started with lighter winds so I was back on my 11.0 sail. I did an OK start and was heading to shore, hoping for some lift. The angle though looked like I was headed, but again I was a bit hesitant and did not turn early enough. Where I turned was not close to shore enough to get lifted and too far from the middle where you get some clear wind. I got pretty badly headed, so rounded the mark in a not very good position. On the downwind I thought back a bit and went to shore again. This time I tacked earlier and was using the middle of the course. I was a bit afraid seeing other guys going to shore, but they got headed the same as me. I managed to round upwind mark in first position and went downwind. Unfortunately, Maris LAT11 got different gust and went much deeper and overtook me for the finish. I finished second.

Second race I did not the best start and tacked early again. This time, the guys by the shore were getting lifted so I rounded in third. Made some ground downwind and was about to overtake Dimitris GRE7 as he fell in, but right after the jibe my mast broke… Good way to use your discarded 3rd place.

During the brake, I rigged my 10.0 and went for it. I had a clear goal in my mind – to finish few places ahead of Dimitris as he was my only rival in points. I really don’t remember much of how it went but I know I finished 3rd and he finished 5th. It was enough for me to take the second without even racing the last race! Anyway, I borrowed a fin which I wanted to test and used the race for testing. Unfortunately I did a very bad start and a lot of mistakes afterwards as the wind was super shifty and gusty, sometimes dropping below 10 knots in the race area. I did not even finish as I spent a lot of time parked in the middle of the course. Anyway, I am very happy with coming second! I really needed this after bad results in World’s.

The next races for me are only Lithuanian championships, but till then, I will keep you updated with what is happening! See you on the water!

Even though coming a bit late, here’s my report from third day of racing in Greek Eurocup event.
So, yesterday for me started with really bad mood as I almost did not sleep at night. I really felt tired so I was doubting my racing abilities. Anyway, I tried to focus and rigged the 11.0 as it was for sure lighter than yesterday. First race started ok and I finished second. The second race I did a pretty good start and was leading by the upwind mark as well as downwind gate. I chose to go to shore as there was a clear lift there. On my way there I thought I was headed but hesitated to tack. I still tacked earlier than I should though so I did not get the lift to the mark and lost a lot. Again I finished second.
During the break, PRO told that the wind was around 15-17 knots, not more than 22 knots in the gusts, so I chose to go with 11.0. By the start though, the wind was no less than 28 knots, maybe even 30! Anyway, there was nothing I could do but hold on to it and try to race. The start was not very good and I got into bad air. I reached the top mark and after barely tacking I rounded in sixth. To my surprise I managed to overtake one guy downwind and, when I turned to shore after the gate, I started gaining on guys in front! I could not believe that I was doing this, while most of the fleet struggled on their 10.0 meter sails! By the upwind mark I was in 4th and went super deep to catch the others. I managed to overtake Maris LAT11 and almost cought Brett AUS8. But because almost is not enough, i finished 3rd!
For the last race I rigged my 10.0 sail and went out for the windiest formula race I have ever done. I believe there were violent gusts of up to 35 knots which made sailing very hard and dangerous. I somehow survived it to finish 3rd again, as Brett AUS8 was showing his form in that strong breeze.
Even though my closest rival Dimitris GRE7 did bad in two last races, he discarded those results and is still behind by only one point.
Today we have our last day and are expecting to finish competition with four more races. As I will be driving back to my Greek home right after the race, I won’t be able to write a report. I expect to be able to upload it on Monday.
I hope you enjoyed reading, don’t forget to have fun on the water and check back for more soon! Cheers!

Hi! Today we had another windy, or should I say ballistic, day in Schinias. I think in the gusts we had over 30 knots, but the worst thing was how violent and fast those gusts would come. Anyway, read on to see how the races went.

I started the first with average start, but as I was sailing my almost never used 10.0, I was really struggling. The trim was a bit wrong, so I could not go as good as I really can. I rounded not too well in the upwind mark, but I went really deep on the downwind so I gained on the guys in front. On the second lap I rounded third with Nikolas GRE28 and Dimitris GRE7 comfortably in front. But again I went very deep, and, besides that, got a big shift which turned me straight to the finish line! I was thinking that I will overtake one of them if I continue like that. Luckily for me, both of them managed to go for a swim during their downwind runs, so I finished the race in 1st without ever jibing from the top mark. Success!

Second race was nothing special again. Trim felt a bit better, but the gusts were super violent! On the second upwind I managed to fly to the air two times. One of those I controlled nicely, but the second one was huge! Went down with a style. Anyway, I managed to water start pretty fast so still rounded in second and finished race in this position.

Third race started with massive wind. Before the start I fell into the water two times, but somehow managed to water start back on board fast. I did an average start, but I couldn’t keep the angle on starboard so lost some ground there. If that wasn’t enough, I couldn’t rotate my cambers after the tack and big gust just turned my sail back and I went for a swim. Again, I somehow water started pretty fast, but I was already far behind. I caught up a bit by the upwind mark to round in 6th, but unluckily I was in the lull and not going as deep as the guys in front. Fortunately enough I saw another gust coming which got me going deep again, and I caught two guys in front. Overtook one over the jibe and went close to another one. By the gate, I chose to jibe and go for the shore as I knew the chop will be very rough outside. I manage to do average starboard tack and did my best to keep pointing and stay in the lift on port. And who could have fought – I rounded upwind mark comfortably in 2nd! After that I just tried to play safe on downwind, selecting a lull to jibe and hold my position to the finish!

This was the last race, as race officer decided it was enough. So after today I moved to second with 9 points. Nikolas GRE28 sailed perfectly to stay in the lead with 7 points, and Dimitris GRE7 did great for a light weight guy and is breathing to my neck in third with 10 points. Tomorrow forecast looks similar, maybe just a few knots lighter, so more hard-core racing to come. Stay tuned for another report straight from Schinias, Greece! Meanwhile, check the full results here. Have fun!

Hey guys! Eurocup in Schinias, Greece was one of those events which were close enough for me this summer, so I couldn’t miss it. Even though the forecast looked super strong and I was anxious about sailing with 10.0 meter sail, which I tried only a year ago once, I still came for the races. From the time I came to the spot, it looked very windy. I was ready to trim the 10.0, but race officer at the skippers meeting told us it was 17 to 23 knots, so I just rigged my well known 11.0 and went for it.

What can I say – those 17-23 knots seemed much stronger, more like 17-27 knots. Everybody was on 10′s, except few guys who didn’t have one and me. Anyway, first race started with not the best start from me, but in the end I somehow managed to finish 3rd. All the details of the race disappeared from my head, so can’t tell anything more about that one. 2nd race started with a bit better start, but nothing spectacular as Nikolas GRE28 came with higher speed and pointed so high I had to slow down and let him pass. I tried to overtake through bellow, but he was controlling me well and didn’t give me even a bit of fresh air. I decided to tack early to get away from him, but I just got in a worst piece of wind over the course. It was gusting so much and I got headed big time. Anyway, I rounded the mark in 4th somehow, tried to fight back, but did a mistake on downwind, so stayed in same position. Tried going for speed, to gain places, but I did not pay attention and got headed with another guy on both tacks. If that wasn’t enough, on the downwind jibe I got hit by a massive gust and the sail just slipped out of my hands. So in the end I finished 5th.

During the brake, the wind eased off a bit so I put in my big fin and went out for another 2 races. Again, my start was not very good, so for some time I was going in dirty wind. I came into the mark in 4th or 5ht, but then on the downwind there were some lulls. Guy in front bellow me and two guys in front but higher stopped planning. I thought I will do the same, but somehow I managed to keep going and get into the gust again. By the downwind gate I checked the course, and saw it filling up outside, so I chose that part. I was far from the mark and it was hard to judge the layline, but I knew I have to overstand it as wind is shifting by the mark. I did just that, but it was still not enough, so had to double tack. Anyway, I chose the side well and was in front by miles. Did no mistakes on downwind and took my bullet! What a good feeling, I really needed that after doing so bad in worlds. 4th and the last race was nothing special. Again, local knowledge worked for Dimitris GRE7, and he managed to do a nice comeback to claim his first bullet. I made few mistakes and finished 3rd.

After all the races I am comfortably in 3rd place with 7 points. Both Nikolas GRE28 and Dimitris GRE7 has 5 points, so everything is still possible.

Here you can check full results. Check back tomorrow for day 2 report and, hopefully, for some pictures! See you!

Sorry for my report coming so late, but I didn’t have internet at my accomodation and did not have enough time to go somewhere with all the action going on.
So day 4 started with two remaining races for the blue fleet and after that the racers were divided to Gold and Silver fleets. Unfortunately I was the first one not to make it to the Gold fleet with two points difference from the last one making it. What this means is my dropping of the sail by the downwind gate which was worth 5 positions and 5 points, cost me a place in Gold fleet. Note to myself – never drop the sail again during a race!
So after not making to the top fleet, I decided to use the competition as a training ground and experiment a lot with equipment. Trying different fins, different settings for the board, sails and so on. In the end – I did manage to make some progress and improve in the light breeze, but I would like to have more time in these conditions.
I am back to Costa Navarino now with 11.0 conditions most of the time. I borrowed gps receiver from my friend so I can at least do some sort of testing on my own. Check back in to see how it goes. Meanwhile, enjoy what wind brings us!

Writing this post with not the best mood after yesterdays racing. The day started with strong winds and I was finally feeling happy with the conditions. I did not make a good start again, but I was feeling okay on my 12.0 sail, so I kept pushing and, by the looks of things, could have finished 19 th but I dropped the sail in the last jibe, which cost me 5 positions, so I ended up 24 th.

Anyway, that was not the worst thing. Before the second race, wind still looked strong, so I took 11.0 as I feel much faster on it. When I went out, the wind was more than enough for the sail. Just before the starting procedure though it started dropping. The start line was very starboard favoured and everybody lined up there. I got stuck during the pre start run and couldn’t get going. Massive over early saved me that time. I went to do a short run to check if 11.0 was still ok, and I chose not to go to shore to change sail as I was afraid I will not make it in time. So I waited for a start and this time chose to start on port. I timed it well and managed to do a perfect start pumping all the way to clear wind. But my joy was short as I felt the wind was dropping very fast. I could barely keep the angle with others on the first upwind, and after that it just got worst. I was loosing positions with each tack and I new it was game over for me. I don’t think I will get into the gold fleet, so I am very very far away from the goal I set.

Even though I was only training in 11.0 conditions, I should have done much better. But as Murphy’s law say – everything that can go wrong, will. I guess I just need to start lowering my expectations and get the best racing experience I can in the silver fleet now. I really feel demotivated after this but I just have to keep on pushing, I don’t like to give up easily. I will try to post tomorrow as well, so stay tuned and have fun!

Some short updates from Worlds in Croatia.

First day was the day of registration, so when the breeze came we went out for some training sessions. I didn’t feel very good and only after I finished, I noticed that the main camber was lost inside of the sail. Not the best way to sail for sure.

Second day started early and with lots of waiting ahead. The wind came pretty late and, the worst of all, very light and gusty. That was my biggest fear, as I haven’t had any training sessions in light wind for a long time, so I didn’t know settings for my sail and I felt really unprepared for that. Besides that, I could really feel that having no starting experience this season is taking its toll. I wasn’t able to position my self correctly and got buried deep down in the fleet in both races. All in all, I am very very far of the goal I had, but today is another day and I hope I can improve in all aspects.

Internet is really bad here, so its hard to update very often, but Ill try to do my best. Keep checking and have fun on the water! ;)

Summer is getting close to the middle and time passed very fast. With it comes the 2013 Formula windsurfing championship which will be held in Viganj, Croatia on 8th-13th of July.
My preparation for it wasn’t something I would have liked it to be, but you have to make the best out of what you have. Big limitation for me was not having a training partner where I am currently staying. But thats not the worst thing, as I feel confident about my gear and settings. The worst by far is my lack of racing experience. I had a chance to compete only in one race this season, but unfortunately the conditions didn’t play ball and no starts where given. My goal is Top 20, but considering the circumstances its pretty steep. Anyway, I will try to do my best in the championship no matter what and put it all to achieve what I have set.
I will also try to post in my blog daily with short updates on the action down there, so stay tuned. Bye for now and check the short clip of me training bellow! Have fun!

Hey there! After enjoying my last years training camp in Greece so much and coupled with job opportunity for the summer, it would have been a shame not to come few weeks earlier for another set of training sessions with Nikolas GRE28. This time we had our training place pretty much set in stone as Nikolas started his own board school down in Agia Marina this year. And having the playground visible through your house window is always a huge bonus. The situation had its own drawbacks though – having place set meant we won’t be going round all spots of Athens, catching all the breeze available. Anyway, I didn’t mind to just chill on the beach during the no wind days.
I didn’t really count how many days I have spent in the water during my stay, but the time we did spend there was usually very productive. We had a boat to set our racing course, so we could do some proper race training when we wanted. Usual wind for summer in the place is North, which is offshore, so we had a chance to train in shifty flat water conditions. It was really nice racing, trying to anticipate all the time where the gusts are coming from. Generally I was going really fast, but because most of the time conditions where for 11.0 or even 10.0, I felt that having a smaller fin would have made my speed even higher and for sure sailing less physical.
Anyway, fin issue is being sorted now, but about this – next time. Hope you enjoyed reading and don’t forget to comeback soon for some more new posts. Have fun!

Hey guys, as promised earlier I am writing about some changes in equipment I made this year. When I arrived to spain and hopped back on formula equipment to train with Spain’s fastest Fernando Martinez ESP 71, I understood my equipment is really not working well. I tried different things, but I didn’t see the improvement I was hoping for. I started to look for some other options and got the opportunity to test new formula rigs from The Loft Sails. Trying them for the first time, I instantly felt better, even though I didn’t have anyone to compare to at the time. Thanks to Monty, the man behind Loft Sails, I had a chance to keep the sails for a while and try them against Fernando. And during our first session together with the 12.0 meter sail which I hadn’t sailed before, I was already much faster then with my MauiSails.
Because MauiSails had a lot of down-force, I had to keep the mast very far back on my Patrik formula board. And that didn’t feel very comfortable to me. Probably my sailing style is different and didn’t suite the sail and board combo.
Anyway, because I was buying my sails and not getting them for free, I decided to buy something that worked better for me. I got a very good offer for barely used 2012 loft ‘proto’ sails, which with some modifications could be made to almost match 2013 sails. Also, I would get an opportunity to work on them my self, thus understanding how they work even better.
So here I am, sailing with Loft Sails on formula this year. I will still be using my MauiSails for slalom, because I really like them there and they work very well for me.
Come back for more new articles soon, meanwhile – enjoy what water and wind brings us!
