The Burke-Gilman Trail is one of Seattle’s most popular multiuse trails. This vibrant, 20-mile trail is heavily used by cyclists and pedestrians for commuting and recreation. It serves as a major transportation corridor, and it connects multiple neighborhoods and other city and regional trails between Bothell and Golden Gardens.

The Burke-Gilman Trail is missing a key segment. The City has been working with the Ballard community for many years to develop facilities where a 1.4-mile segment of the trail is missing. This “Missing Link” has been under evaluation since 2001. However, it has been difficult to agree on a safe route and design due to the unique challenges associated with the heavy industrial, manufacturing, maritime, freight, and rail operations within this area of Ballard. The 152nd Avenue Main Street corridor is part of a detailed transportation network that will create a vibrant and dynamic core for Overlake with high quality urban design and substantial travel space for all modes. The reconstruction and widening of this street will accommodate the current and future redevelopment needs of the area. Dustin was the lead engineer for this federally funded. The City has developed specific design guidelines for the neighborhood that are untested and one of Dustin’s key roles was determining how to best apply the standards to the project’s specific design. To improve local traffic circulation, rail operations, and safety, SDOT is building a bridge over the railroad tracks on S Lander St between 1st Ave S and 4th Ave S. This crossing will provide a roadway unimpeded by rail operations, improve safety, and relieve congestion in Seattle's SODO neighborhood. Dustin was the engineer of record for water Seattle Public Utilities water main improvements along the corridor. A new water main product, earthquake resistant ductile iron pipe, was selected for the project which allows expansion, contraction and deflection of the water main during a catastrophic earthquake event. The final design included a combination of the earthquake resistant ductile iron, restrained joint ductile iron and HDPE water main in a casing under the railroad tracks. The projects includes 8-foot wide sidewalks with street trees and pedestrian lighting in a portion of Kenmore’s downtown that is ripe for redevelopment. The project also involves a water main replacement through a separate design contract with Northshore Utility District, storm drainage upgrades, walls, and undergrounding of overhead utilities. Dustin’s design experience with wet and dry utilities and walls has been critical in making sure that goals of the project can still be achieved even within a constrained and congested ROW. The shifting of roadway alignments and the creation of a new segment of roadway has made way for redevelopment of the Renton Housing Authority Site into a mixed-use neighborhood of public housing, market-rate housing, commercial uses, and a new public park and library. The design of the streets emphasizes pedestrians with tabled intersections, raised mid-block crosswalks, wide sidewalks and decorative pedestrian lighting. Dustin lead the design of the streets and utilities as well as the coordination efforts with private developers, the under-construction library, and undergrounding franchise utilities.

Dustin’s breadth of experience and effective communication allowed him to be the central point of contact for the many stakeholders in this project which include many City departments, contractors, developers, architects, franchise utilities, and other consultants. The project completed the missing link of roadway on 228th Street from Highway 99 to 76th Ave, creating a direct connection between Highway 99 and various regional transportation facilities for southwest Snohomish County.

As design engineer, Dustin designed the replacement of a water main as part of the City of Kirkland’s Park Lane project. The design involved the replacement of concrete asbestos pipe in an urban street in downtown Kirkland congested with many other utilities. Dustin also provided construction design assistance when some connections to the existing system needed to be quickly redesigned due to differing site conditions. This project was awarded the 2015 APWA Project of the Year Award.

The City of Cashmere owns and operates a lagoon system wastewater treatment facility (WWTF); however, the WWTF’s treatment capacity was not able to keep up with recent increases in environmental regulations. RH2 was tasked to prepare a Facility Plan and design upgrades that will meet the new total maximum daily load phosphorus limitations.

RH2 was tasked to prepare a Facility Plan and design upgrades that will meet the new total maximum daily load phosphorus limitations.

The WWTF upgrade was designed for an average day flow of 1.1 MGD and includes a new headworks with screening and a vortex grit removal unit and classifier; equalization and activated sludge basins; 40-foot circular clarifiers; open channel UV disinfection; a dissolved air flotation unit for thickening; an aerobic digester; and a belt filter press for sludge handling.

The vortex grit unit and classifier will be installed partially outdoors with screens to minimize costs. The equipment includes weather protections and a bypass to accommodate grit unit maintenance.

An activated sludge process configuration was designed to achieve enhanced biological phosphorus removal. This was one of the key design criteria to maximize effluent phosphorus reduction. The design was a modified form of the Bardenpho process and was selected with multiple anoxic and aerobic stages. Each aerobic stage includes a grid of fine bubble diffusers.

Different UV disinfection systems were evaluated and a horizontal, open channel system with two banks in series in one channel was selected to reduce costs, minimize operating complexity, provide reliable disinfection, and ensure proper disinfection during minimum and maximum week flows.

This is the first phase in an approximately $15.2 million construction project to bring irrigation water to the prestigious Red Mountain American Viticultural Area (AVA) region. RH2 assisted in design, bidding and construction inspection of the project on a very condensed timeline. The project was designed in only 2 months and installed in only 4 months.

Irrigation mains were required to be constructed through the winter to maintain services to all customers during the irrigation season. Hydraulic modeling was performed to size and calculate peak conditions during the design. The project included significant rock excavation, dewatering, multiple highway and railroad crossings, and interstate crossings. The project utilized multiple pipe sizes and materials to meet design conditions, including pipe as large as 36 inches in diameter, and HDPE and PVC materials.

The project was funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act stimulus, was constructed across two separate counties, and involved coordination with numerous agencies and jurisdictions. The pipeline will provide local land owners with a new pressurized system that is completely metered from source to distribution, ultimately conserving water lost to evaporation, seepage and open channel inefficiencies.
